U2 Manager Confirms American Idol Season Finale Performance

UPDATE: An announcement posted on U2.com confirms the New York Post report:  Bono and The Edge will appear alongside cast members of the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.  (Via THR)

The New York Post broke the story on Friday.  Now it’s confirmed.

While backstage at the Billboard Music Awards, the band’s longtime manager, Paul McGuinness, revealed that the group would be rehearsing for the “Idol” finale on Monday before performing on Wednesday’s Idol finale (watch below).

What U2 will perform on the Idol stage has not been confirmed, but according to the New York Post, the band was negotiating to play their songs from “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” with the “Spider-Man” stars to joining them onstage.

I have to admit that I’m chuckling a little at the biggest band in the world coming to AI to pimp their cursed musical.

  • fuzzywuzzy

In S8, Simon made a big deal about calling Bono personally to get a song cleared for Adam. As someone said in an earlier thread, I think that anyone who appears on AI to promote themselves should be required to give clearance to any song that’s requested by the contestants.

  • Trina

Huge, huge coup for Idol. unfortunately the Spiderman music sucks.

Nigel was probably smart enough to broker a deal with them: “Okay, I’ll let you come on the biggest TV show in the country to attempt to salvage the shitty Spiderman. But, you’ll be clearing at least 5 songs for our contestants next year!”

  • Valentin432

U2 is the biggest act on the planet.

The fact that both them and Lady Gaga perform on the same show will make a lot of people tune in.

Well, Cook got to sing “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” during the S7 Finale and Lee sang “Beautiful Day” last year, so it seems like U2 doesn’t have much of a problem clearing songs lately.

Anyways, I think it’s great that U2 will be performing!

Oh, no doubt. Like Trina said, this is a HUGE coup for AI. I just like poking fun at the Spiderman musical :).

And doesn’t U2 get sung on the Idol-like shows abroad all the time? I thought long before ISHFWILF was cleared in S7, U2 was covered on X-Factor and the like. It doesn’t seem like U2 is one of those snobby bands that refuses to clear their songs for reality competitions…

I LURVE me some U2, but a song from the Spiderman musical? Meh…

Happy to see part of them on AI. It is a loved band, great music and performances, but Bono, as the voice of the band, is a nice person and I’m not necessarily thinking about his charities, he in particular. A pleasure to read or listen to his interviews,. For how big they are somebody else to be in their shoes I don’t think would be so accessible. They worked hard in the beginning of their career as many musicians, they were more successful touring then selling records for years.

What about this one? I like this studio version better than U2′s original.

Wow. This is awesome for Idol. Glad it’s been confirmed.

  • Davidx2

Looks like one of David Archuleta’s former band members (bass guitarist) will be playing with U2 on Wednesday:

Very nice, Shorty indeed! I like too Bono’s edgy, unpolished style and their sharp sound. Not so happy with the bass player on Wednesday, lol. Love me some Adam, the U2 one.

  • Chicagolaw

Excited for U2, not so excited for Spiderman music.

Wow. That is beautiful. For some reason, I don’t remember this studio recording. Can I still download it?

ITA with that! But still, Simon’s gotta be pissed that AI has the biggest band and the biggest pop star on this season! Don’t see how X-Factor can top that.

Not from itunes, but you can probably find it somewhere. Idol does not have the studio recordings available for very long. Stupid on their part, IMO since obviously they could still be selling them. Hope you find it somewhere.

  • Incipit

That’s a great “get” for Idol – and obviously – Idol appeals to U2 as a platform for the “Spiderman” song.

TPTB seem to be going out of their way to arrange a Finale with reason for any disaffected non-country fans to tune in…and attract the casual viewer as well – get those numbers up there!

    It will probably work, too.

    IMO. Of Course.

  • Renee in CA

Well, after Haley left last week, Nigel saved me 2 hours of my life, so I’ll tape the finale and find the good stuff.

  • Buffynut

Kind of ironic that Simon Cowell always implied he and Bono were such good friends and the first Finale that Simon is not on, Bono makes an appearance! I am so excited I will get to see U2 live!

  • trojanchick99

Just an update, U2.com has confirmed an appearance by Bono and The Edge who will be appearing with Reeve Carney. Larry and Adam will not be there.

  • YeahRight

Well, I’ll tune in to see U2. Just hope they’re not on at the same time as the season finale of Modern Family.

  • MayMirabella

woo hoo!! I love U2 and I have such respect for the charitable work and contributions made by Bono.

  • Grammie Kari

This is like MAJOR news and I am both surprised and pleased! U2 are brillant.

All that is left is Madonna, Cher, and Paul McCartney, right?

  • milwlovesadam

    Very nice. Good “Get”.

Love Adam’s cover of “One.” The studio version is sublime and moving. They even had an “homage” of sorts to it on Glee in the “Grilled Cheesus” episode. They used the same arrangement Adam did, and all wore the same light denim shirt with epaulets on their shoulders that he wore on Idol.

A lot of us talked about it here on a Glee thread at the time.
