Tuesday Ratings: The Voice Finale Falls Sharply Vs Last Year

What’s going on with The Voice? Is the twice a year cycle beginning to burn the show out? Or where viewers uninterested with the final 3? Last night’s finale ratings dropped sharply compared to last year. They fell vs the spring cycle as well. NCIS had more viewers in the hour the shows went head to head.

On NBC, The Biggest Loser earned a 2.0, up a tenth from last week’s 1.9 adults 18-49 rating. The Voice finale earned a 3.9, up from last week’s 3.1 adults 18-49 rating but a far cry from the 4.9 that last fall’s finale earned (and the 4.4 adults 18-49 rating that last spring’s finale earned).

NBC urgently need to start another sing-show to 24/7 someone sang on television.

  • MrTemecula

    Season 1 Finale: 3.7 sh 11.05M viewers
    Season 2 Finale: 4.4 sh 11.09M viewers
    Season 3 Finale: 4.9 sh 14.13M viewers
    Season 4 Finale: 4.4 sh 15.59M viewers
    Season 5 Finale: 4.0 sh 14.01M viewers
I don’t see a trend. Numbers look pretty strong to me. Danielle did bring a lot of older viewers, though. Cassadee looked really popular to the demo that ad buyers love.

  • Susan Burge

As an “older viewer,” I wasn’t interested in Danielle or Cassadee, nor did I care about any of this year’s crop. I started to watch last night, but when the group song began and I realized I didn’t remember most of the people who’d been eliminated earlier and that they weren’t doing well at singing together, as well as the fact that I didn’t care about who won or any of the “guest stars” who’d been announced, I decided to watch Chopped instead. Nothing against Tessanne, who has a great voice, but I simply don’t care about her. I don’t spend a lot of money on music, but what little I do spend won’t go to her or either of the other 2. I’m pretty much worn out with the Voice being on all the time – think they’d do well to go back to one season a year. It doesn’t help that things are already being leaked about the “next” season, which has apparently been taping while this one was on. There isn’t even an illusion of it being a live season any more.

I’m glad The Sing-Off is on tonight. It may not be live, but it’s got consistently good singing. And the best judges in the business.

  • Liteasy

It’s possible people were happier with Shakira and Usher as judges than Xtina and CeeLo!

  • MrTemecula

Just going by the numbers, Susan. I’m not saying every mature viewers were Danielle fans, but I’m presuming many were and they showed up in the most viewed Voice finale.

This season’s top 3 are all talented with the best singer on the Top 3 declared as the winner, but they are not interesting at all for me. There’s no stand out. Even their interviews and confessionals are so boring.

  • Q3

My guess is that The Voice lost a lot of people who like country music for the last two shows — no Blake, no country artist contestant or performer, no alt rock performer on finale — why watch?

I also think the loss of younger viewers for the final two shows may be related to the contestants — James and Cole both did not make the Final 3. That pretty much left no contestant for someone who likes country, rock or contemporary alt music in the Top 3.

It will be interesting to see the final LIVE + 7 numbers to see is some of this is just time shifting and also to see if there is a fall off in the southeast.

There can be anomalies during the season finales like last season I think that spike in older viewers had to do more with Cher and Bob Seger, two artists that had not performed on television in a long time. To get a better sense of trends, you should look at the performance finales which are:

Season 1 Performance Finale: 4.4 sh 12.70M viewers
Season 2 Performance Finale: 3.8 sh 10.74M viewers
Season 3 Performance Finale: 4.2 sh 13.37M viewers
Season 4 Performance Finale: 3.7 sh 12.68M viewers
Season 5 Performance Finale: 3.3 sh 12.68M viewers

Odd that the exact same numbers people watched this season from last but a sharp drop in the demo and almost a full ratings point down from last year. But considering how strong both demo and overall viewers were in the first and third, The Voice should go back and recruit more Warped Tour chicks who sing pop-rock because the one unifying trend for both those seasons were Dia Frampton and Cassadee Pope.

  • MrTemecula

I can see that. I just presumed country genre drew older viewers.

  • MrTemecula

Fall 2012 was such a strong season talent-wise. Classic rockers. Indie-folk. Goth-pop. Princess-pop. Indie-Soul-Pop. RB-Soul-Prince. Really strong talents that covered a lot of styles.

The Voice may be dropping a little, I still think they are doing pretty good compared to other singing competitions (I am looking at you XFactor)

Burn out may be imminent though, I agree that having The Voice twice in a year may be one of the good reasons for it.
