Idol Chat Takes on Your Favorite, Blake’s “Love” and More!

Kimberly Caldwell and Rosanna Tavarez take on American Idol.
Just how awesome were Melinda and Blake last week? Who of the two eliminations was the bigger surprise? And who has reason to worry going into “Boogie Week”? We asked Kimberly Caldwell and Rosanna Tavarez, the hosts of TV Guide Channel’s Idol Chat, Idol Tonight and Reality Chat, for their takes on these topics and more….

All this ‘Idol’ flash leaves contestants in shadows

Has American Idol gotten too glitzy for its own good?
Hauling in old-time superstars like Diana Ross and Tony Bennett each week, juggling formats with an all-star telethon and a surprise, but exploitive, elimination reprieve; padding the schedule with extended broadcasts and packing the audience with celebs and overwrought tearful fans, the show isn’t the amateur hour we fell in love with….

Idol goes disco — well, could it be any sillier anyway?

Tonight is disco night on American Idol. And if that isn’t enough to shake you to the bottom of your platform shoes, you are made of stern stuff indeed. Barry Gibb is this week’s mentor, and the Bee Gees, to borrow one of Kelly Clarkson’s favourite expressions, will be the “bees’ knees” — if just for this one night. How Gibb landed the gig is a bit of a mystery……..

    Our own new ‘Idol’

The Final Four perform tonight on “American Idol,” but somehow we feel something is missing. Sure, Melinda has that technically proficient voice and great poise. LaKisha is a powerhouse performer with a sense of style. Jordin is cute as can be and wise beyond her years. And Blake usually makes his beat boxing more entertaining than annoying.
But what we really want is a North Carolinian to pull for — a Fantasia, Clay, Bucky, Kellie or Daughtry…..

Blake Lewis is no “Idol” come lately

If it weren’t for “American Idol,” Bothell’s Blake Lewis would be beat-boxing in obscurity à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ scatting, gigging here and there just to pay the bills.

But now he belongs to America à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ a name, a face, a falsetto beloved by hundreds, thousands, maybe millions of “Blaker Girls,” “Blaker Guys” and just simple fans….

Has LaKisha’s luck run out on ‘American Idol’?
    Flint native on VotefortheWorst.com

How deep is your love for Flint’s LaKisha Jones?

That’s the big question as Barry Gibb of Bee Gees fame mentors the final four singers tonight on “American Idol.”

LaKisha survived last Wednesday’s double elimination after coming on strong during Bon Jovi week and earning a kiss of approval from Simon Cowell for her efforts.

It was a huge improvement over the prior two weeks, when LaKisha failed to impress the judges by choosing songs identified with former “Idol” winners Carrie Underwood and Fantasia Barrino.

Still, the perception remains that it could be hard for her to reach the final three…….

    False Idols

…The biggest problem with the American music industry is the lack of voice. Brandon Flowers and Gerard Way and Kelly Clarkson and Hilary Duff all have the same, innocuous singing voice. One without character or sensibility or emotion, simply a vehicle for carrying tepid, mass-produced, asinine pop lyrics. Matthew Bellamy and Chris Martin orally raped Thom York and stole his vocal cords to use for their own sick purposes, making what was once unique now commonplace.

I blame American Idol. American Idol promotes the most middle-of-the-road, ineffectual, inoffensive vocal styling to bored housewives and teenage girls who think singing is about standing on the stage with oneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s arms in the air. This is not music. I argued once with My Professor because he put Kelly Clarkson on a mix he made me, and he complimented her à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“big voice.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Most people can carry a tune. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not hard. Being able to fill a vacant space or hit the high note so hard you have to bend backwards is simply a practice of breathing, not vocal ability…

“Idol” champ Taylor Hicks playing it safe

…Hicks could still have a solid career ahead of him, but he needs to take charge — not unlike the way Kelly Clarkson finally did. Other artists before him have mined rock, soul and blues with more gusto and far better material; Southside Johnny and Delbert McClinton come to mind. And with the commanding way such singers as Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone draw on R&B past while incorporating contemporary elements, Hicks just comes off as soul lite, less fulfilling than the real thing.

Three gals and that something something

…And so now, it’s Blake versus the three Divas, all of whom can belt out a song: LaKisha, who has already secured her place in Idol history with her full-on- the-lips shmooch with Simon, who judged those lips worthy (“Nice lips, I love them”); Melinda, the professional backup singer who still skews too old for our tastes; and Jordin, the teenager who can’t stop talking and who will probably be eliminated this week.

Will LaKisha, Melinda and Jordin split the diva voting bloc, allowing Blake to slide through? This week’s cringe-inducing theme: Barry Gibb. (Prediction: Blake remixes “I Started a Joke.”)…

The Final Four on American Idol

It’s Bee Gees week on American Idol… I don’t know what to expect. Other than the whole Sanjaya Malakar debacle, we haven’t really seen a major shocker this year – so this could be the week.

    The loser takes it all
Less-talented stars are eclipsing the winners with personality, among other talents, writes Soraya Roberts

Sanjaya Malakar is kind of like a car accident. Not a horrendous one with blood spatter everywhere, but one that turns your head just the same. That giant gnashing grin, that semi-asexuality, the horrible but unique hairstyles he insists on donning à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ there are a lot of things you could call Sanjaya, left, but normal is probably not one of them.

But after five seasons of formulaic talent parades, American Idol only benefits from a personality like Sanjaya. The Seattle native is a shining beacon of eccentricity among the drab Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdards of this world.

Things have changed since the birth of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1956. Today, winners have ceased to be the apogee of talent TV. These days, losers are the new winners. On American Idol, for example, Season 2′s Clay Aiken became the first loser to have a U.S. Hot 100 number with “This is the Night,” while Ruben Studdard has been little heard of since his winning night. Not to mention poor Fantasia Barrino who didn’t do too badly with four Grammy nods last year, but was still playing second fiddle to academy-award winning Idol loser Jennifer Hudson…..

Melinda Doolittle this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s shocker on American Idol?

Some say that Melinda Doolittle peaked too early in the season and hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t been able to deliver in the same way she did early on in the season.

With two male Idols bumped off last week, Blake Lewis could inherit those teeny-bopper votes.

Melinda fans may take her safe status for granted and could be suffering from voting fatigue.

Meanwhile Jordin Sparks and LaKisha Jones could easily slip by another week.

Melinda may be a terrific performer, but her departure this week could be the season shocker to rock AI6.

I was a little confused about the whole package. “Idol” heads into the home stretch

“American Idol” is heading toward its finale, and it’s wrapping up a larger-than-life season.

This was the year of Sanjaya and Antonella and the divas. It was the year of long hair, short skirts and big ballads.

Purists squirmed at some of that. One judge, Simon Cowell, even claimed he would quit if Sanjaya Malakar won.

And Ken Warwick, the executive producer, shrugged it off….

Spirit is heart of great singers
Of the 4 finalists on tonight’s ‘American Idol,’ Melinda Doolittle best represents that ideal.

…The arguments are raging about which one is the best. After I critique the Tuesday shows on my blog, at OrlandoSentinel.com/tvguy, I hear from readers who defend or blast the contenders. One recurring theme is: Singer “A” has the whole package to be the next American Idol.

But you don’t need the whole package to be a great singer.

Consider Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Tony Bennett. Distinctive voices. Originals. Hardly hunks.

Think of Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand and Dolly Parton. Terrific voices. Hardly conventional beauties.

Whenever anyone dismisses American Idol as junk television, I think of The Original Amateur Hour, the Idol of its day. The radio version of Amateur Hour bolstered Frank Sinatra. The television version helped Gladys Knight.

The promise of American Idol is that it, too, could give us a singer of lasting stature. It’s too early to tell whether it has so far. The show is in just its sixth season…

In case anyone missed it, there was a USA today article linked at the end of yesterday’s thread with lots of spoilers for tonight.

    Good morning everyone!

Off topic, but wasn’t DWTS good last night? My favorite is Joey, but Apollo is growing on me. His paso diablo [sp] was amazing!! I think I want to start working as a dance instructor. Of course, it would help if I could dance :wallbash_tb:

I swear those girls don’t look like they have an ounce of fat on them.

  • jpfan

Thanks for the heads up on the USA Today Article. Melinda’s pastor will be in the audience? A very likeable group but so deeply dull. Blake’s the only one with any edge but he’s such a limited singer. Oh well, I don’t hate any of them and they all deserve to be there (although I think Phil deserved it a little too). Going back in idol history, they shape up very well against top 4s of the past. Early prediction, only Melinda is 100% safe so any of the other 3 could leave. Have a blessed day.

Phil and Chris were on the Today Show this morning. Phil was wearing his sailor suit! :smile2_tb: Meredith asked Chris if he and Alaina Alexander are an item and Chris said “Who?” :lol_tb: When he remembered who she is he said no, they are just friends. :laugh_tb:

Billy Ray was a complete and total asshat last night. Ian has been consistently criticized by the judges – even when he does well. Yet, he smiles through the whole thing and is a damn good sport about it. Billy Ray finally gets the criticism he so richly deserves and he rants about it. What a freaking baby.

Apolo and Julianne were wonderful last night, and I really don’t see how they can lose this thing. Joey’s good, but I would like him better if he actually danced with his partner instead of mugging for the audience. Laila and Maks are my favorite couple. She’s amazing and so is he. And, they for sure bring the hotness. It’s been a fun season for that show – but I’ll probably weep like a little girl tonight if Ian goes instead of Mr. Billy Ray Needs an Anger Management Class.

Oh wait – so this is an American Idol blog? Yeah okay, sorry about that. I read the USA today article w/the spoilers and I’m pleased with Blake’s choices. The article was kind of poorly written, and seemed to jump around a lot so I got confused. But, didn’t they indicate that we’d get a pointy pose?

As I agree Billy Ray should go home tonight, the judges saying his routine was pure *crap* was wrong too. Was that constructive ? I think not…. And it’s the same manipulation with Ian… they are doing their best to make sure Cheryl doesn’t win again. Boy, I watch some TV !!! I love it !! I’m not afraid to admit it !! :yell_tb:

  • rher

Good morning everyone. Thank you Lisa for the news links.

I have to add to the DWTS discussion. I hope Billy Ray goes home tonight. He was so terrible. And he wanted an 8?? The judges were being merciful when they gave him some 7s. Oh, and did anyone see Hannah Montana chomping on her gum with it half sticking out of her mouth. Isn’t there some sort of etiquette quasi-rule about gum and cameras? I was taught that for anytime going on stage, and she looked quite nasty.

Here is my prediction for tonight (thank you in advance, by the way, for your congrats in getting this right). The group will royally reek in their 1st round of BeeGee songs (except for Melinda). There will by much hand wringing. Then, the group will do slightly better (it is season 6, you know), and Randy will proclaim “that’s what I’m talking about! The competition has finally started.” Paula will noddingly agree with Randy. We will probably get the real answer of Simon’s true favorite. I’m also venturing to say that Jordin’s unpimping will be in full swing tonight. Wish someone had picked Guilty. How is Lakisha going to sing Stayin Alive? That should be interesting. Jordin singing Woman in Love? There is a lot of non-screaming going on in that song. Can she sing it?

American Idol – the odds have changed

Tonight we will see the final four singers from the American Idol season six perform, trying to avoid elimination tomorrow.

The final four are Blake Lewis, Jordin Sparks, Lakisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle with the mentor this week – Barry Gibb.

The betting odds have changed since yesterday, although Lakisha Jones is still the least favorite to win the American Idol with odds now 14/1, a change from yesterdays 12/1 (betting odds by Bodog). Jordin Sparks still has the hearts of the bookmakers, her odds stable at 1/1. The betting odds to win the Idol this year for Blake Lewis are unchanged at 7/2, but Melinda Doolittle shows improvement, her odds changing from 7/5 to 6/5. It seems that the online betting websites we have checked have their final two picks – Jordin Sparks and Melinda Doolitle. This comes to no ones surprise, as those to singers have been the most consistent in their stage performance and singing…….

    http://www.ogpaper.com/news/news-0327.html

  • http://www.myspace.com/sistermush dcd74

As far as DWTS goes, I want the final two couples to be Apolo & Julianne and Laila & Maks. Joey is alright but he rubs me the wrong way. I think Ian is being unfairly underscored by the judges because they don’t want another win for Cheryl. Billy Ray, I give him credit for trying and he didnt lose his cool until Bruno called his dance “crap”.
He always seems shocked when he is called safe.
I don’t think Billy Ray ever thought in a million years that his fanbase would keep him in this long.

Now onto AI, I am looking forward to the BeeGees songs tonight and would be happier if I could watch it live. I very rarely work evenings and have to do so tonight and tomorrow night so I have to tape American Idol *sigh*
I can’t believe work thinks they have the right to interfere with me watching American Idol :P

I am off to work, have a great day peoples :)

    Sum it up:

    Blake:
“You Should Be Dancing” – Beat-box style
“This is Where I Came In”

    Jordin:
“To Love Somebody” – Nigel convinced Barry to let her have it
    “Woman in Love”

    Melinda: (two of the following)
“Love You Inside” – she’s not sure about the lyrics
“I Just Want to Be Your Everything”
“How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” – not into yet.

    Lakisha:
    “Stayin’ Alive”
    “Run to Me”

Ford Commercial: “You Really Got Me” (Sanjaya owns this song already)

Group Number: “How Deep is Your Love” with beat boxing (where have I heard that before this season?)

I swear those girls donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t look like they have an ounce of fat on them.

I lOVED Apollo and Lalia..Her father being there was so darn touchng. It’s clear, Ali has got to be one of the most respected man on the face of this earth. I hope he was able to take in all the admiration last night. Lalia’s mom is gorgeous but there is no denying, Lalia is the spitting image of her father. Joey is good but there is something about him. I just can’t seem to put my finger on it. Ian, I feel real sorry for him. The judges have been hard on him from day one but some of what they said I really do agree with. Ian dances with Cheryl as if he is not really into her and he is suppose to be single, meaning not married. Her two previous partners had more chemistry with Cheryl and they were married. Ian’s is trying to hard and it shows in his performances. BillyRay, I love him for all the right reason. After watching him last night, I’ve come to the conclusion that dancing is not as easy as it looks. Especially when you’re never done it before.

In the end, I’m hoping for a Lalia and Apollo finals with Lalia winning it.

Back to AI, it’s BeeGee’s night. I love that group.

I agree with the poster yesterday that said the BeeGees really don’t have any bad songs. Looking forward to hearing Lakisha sing her songs and Blake (you should be dancing, not this is where I came in). I am glad he picked an uptempo song. The problem with Melinda is that we already know she will do well, although I really love the songs she picked. I am scared about Jordin. I was just skimming over yesterday’s thread and I noticed that there was some talk about what Bo Bice is doing.
It just happens that last night at work I was listening to the radio and they had one of those showdown things where they play two new songs and listeners call to say which one they like best – anyway… one of the songs was by Bo Bice and it was from the Blades of Glory movie (the ice skating one with Wil Farrell). I don’t remember what it was called but it sounded okay.

Must say after seeing the song choices I am looking forward to tonight’s show!

Hi guys! Spense, that article was very poorly written and confusing.

Anyway, is it bad when you start dreaming of AI? Last night I dreamt that Blake made it to top 3 and Pauler chose his song. I was pissed since Pauler chose the song. LOL. I need help.

The Bee Gees aren’t a pure disco group. They’ve written and sang a lot of great songs and ballads over the years.

These includes theme songs to movies, country and diva tunes for others to sing. Singers like Barbra Streisand, Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton, Samantha Sang, etc. have performed their music.

They are the epitome of a group that knows how to change with the times.

not unlike the way Kelly Clarkson finally did.

Did I miss something? When did Kelly take charge?

Yes, she changed her management team and, apparently, they are “VERY” supportive of her. (She was allowed far more creative freedom from what I understand.) Folowing her change were two grammys so I guess it was a smart move on her part! (God, I love her!!!)

Nobody has the right to grab and touch and hump on another unsuspecting human being. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s disgusting and actually isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it illegal to do that to someone? If not, it should be.

If someone had done that to me at 15, there would not have needed to be a trial. My dad would have shot him.

Good morning everyone. I just got back from the Taylor/Pala concert yesterday, read through the threads and saw that Griz had posted her review, so didn’t post mine. And mine was too long anyway. Just to sum it up………awesome weather, awesome venue, awesome Taylor and his band. It was my first time seeing them, and I was surprised at how emotional I was, and how much I rocked out! Boy did that feel good. I wasn’t as fortunate as some, who got to meet him, but I did have some encounters with the band,Melanie and the crew, and told them how great they were. Talked to alot of people who were seeing him for the first time since Idol and also a couple, who are hardcore AI fans and specifically Hicks fans. She works at the casino and said that the staff was so impressed by how down to earth Taylor is. Taylor and his band got a new fan in my sister, who had never seen him perform at all.

  • Little Boy Blue

Robin Thickes on the View today if anyone wanted to catch that riveting performance again.

I am as riveted as others who are rubbernecking me while looking at a car acident on I-95 :)

Billy Ray is toast, I believe. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like him at all.

I hope you’re right PJ. I wanted to like him, because he started out so earnest and self depracating. But, the hissy fits – and that weird thing he does at the end where he ignores his partner and tries to drum up support from the audience just really bug me.

Oh, and I agree with everything LBB said about the Bee Gees. They cannot be defined just by disco – their catalogue is huge and covers a lot of different genres. I’m a fan.

    And this:

If someone had done that to me at 15, there would not have needed to be a trial. My dad would have shot him.

But this is a different world than the one I grew up in unfortunately.

I’m 99% sure that Mr. Spense would also shoot anyone who did this to his little girl – so there’s still hope for the world.

Opportunity knocks but not everyone’s listening

RUPERT MURDOCH has made many good decisions in his life, but for one particular piece of good fortune he should give thanks to his daughter Elisabeth every Tuesday and Wednesday.

Elisabeth was an executive of his British satellite company BSkyB and was a fan of the British program Pop Idol. It was she who urged her father to buy American Idol for his Fox television network when its creator, Simon Fuller, was trying to hawk it to American television networks, none of whom showed much interest.

Strangely, for a television show invented by a Brit, first shown on British television and picked up by an Australian media mogul, Idol has proved to be an American cultural phenomenon…..

  • madaboutu

JJ…….LOL I’m a little old for stalking, sorry to say. But I went with a serious backache and it was gone by the time the concert was over, so I guess the Medicated Goo worked! I did tell the band members that were sitting in the restaurant across from us that they had made me feel 20 again and got rid of my backache. :) Anyway the venue itself was great too. You go inland off the coast about 24 miles, and all of a sudden there is this casino sticking up. Beautiful hotel and the rooms were fabulous. (even the merch guy said they were so happy with the rooms) Ours overlooked the stage and the pool. There are mountains around the hotel so the setting is great. The crowd was really into it too. Lots of singing along. I think griz mentioned the kids looking out from the hotel rooms, and at one point, the lady next to me pointed up to one of the rooms and a woman was dancing up a storm up there. I think the venue just added to the magic of the night.

  • Chrissey58

MAD!! Finally..you got your “Taylor concert”! Isn’t he just spellbinding?? Now, go watch those videos I worked so hard making for you! (LOL–the only hard part was sitting watching them ALL again when I need to be WORKING, damnit!)

  • calimari

madaboutu – I had a terrible backache before the Royal Oak show – I was literally limping from the restaurant to the show. By the time the show was over, it was gone. Thank God for Taylor! He cured me. :wink_wp:
Metta – unfortuntely, I can’t access YouTube links at work, it’s blocked. So I’ll just have to trust that there might be a decent song in there tonight. I know the BeeGees did more than disco, but the disco thing was enough to make me not listen to them. Luckily for Elton John, he had tons of great stuff before he tried the disco thing, so he didn’t lose me entirely.
I also enjoy deep fried calImari with a nice marinara sauce…

  • Little Boy Blue

    Madaboutu,

I only saw one Taylor Hicks concert and that was at the Foxwoods in CT. I personally thought it was great, as did my wife.

One common theme I notice among the concert reviews everywhere ( even at the site concertfans.com ) is this — Taylor Hicks fans are UNANIMOUS in their praise and enjoyment of the concerts.

However, when the local press start to review the concert, you find most of them singularly underwhelmed and less than impressed.

I’ve read 2 reviews of Taylor’s House of Blues concert in LA and their tone are similar.

I guess if you’re not a fan, you will never be.

  • sexygirl

Yes, she changed her management team and, apparently, they are à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“VERYà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ supportive of her. (She was allowed far more creative freedom from what I understand.)

Kelly was once part of the AI management team. She left the them and went with The Firm. The same managing team who Taylor went with from day one. Kelly and Taylor are two different people and are looked upon as such. Where as Kelly has always been embraced by the radio, Taylor exceptance has been a lot harder. When she went to The firm she was already a mainstream success. She already had a Grammy nonimated, multi-million selling cd under her belt. There was not much work for them to do, as far as her image and marketing her to a public outside of the AI world. Taylor came to them straight off a cheesy show with gray hair and a stigma of not being easily marketable.. There was/is a lot more work for them to do with him. But, he does have the same amount of creative freedom as Kelly because that is what The Firm is known for.. Allowing their clients to have just as much imput into their careers..

  • Metta

Chrissey58………yes, it finally happened and it was worth the wait. I do watch the tapes often, and I broke down and bought IYT, which I didn’t have. There is always youtube, TG.
calimari……that is two miracles, so maybe we can submit Taylors name for sainthood LOL
LBB……..I think you are somewhat right in regard to the reviewers, but after being at the concert and talking to lots of people who either hadn’t seen him since AI, or just didn’t know what he had been doing until the concert, I think he can gain lots of new fans. I am not sure he can sell millions of albums…..time will tell…..but I think he can continue to do well in concert.
The couple I mentioned above, are hard core AI fans and have AI parties at their house every Wed. They said they, and their friends used to sit around voting their fingers off for Taylor. They like Melinda this season.

Hey Sexy!!! My “Kelly” response really had nothing to do with Taylor. If he was included in the original post, forgive as I did not see it! I do know he is with the Firm also. Without details, Kelly had quite a difficult time with the AI Management. Her change really was very liberating for her! (Kelly stayed with my best friend’s daughter on occasion and Tamyra was her daughter’s roommate for quite some time.)

We will “agree to disagree” on Taylor’s having the same artistic freedom Kelly has. I just somehow cannot agree with that at this time. Perhaps he will gain more down the road. Thanks for sharing…

I guess if youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re not a fan, you will never be.

Critics are who they are. They are there to critique, not neccessarly enjoy the show the way a fan or ordinary person would. I do believe some of these critics do approach Taylor’s show with a preconcieved view of him. But for the most part, I found a lot of his reviews pretty typical critical reviews.

Remember, critics are suppose to be snobs who feel they have the art and intregrity of music locked down. They are not suppose to like someone from a cheesy show like AI. Especially when he is not being strongly hyped by the show and he is not selling cds as well as his AI competitors. The fact that he is not neccessarily being slammed like he was during AI tour, is alright with me. These reviews are quite normal for a first-timer in the commericial world.

Taylor has a lot of growing to do and I’m sure wants to be around for a longtime so these critics can continue to come to his shows and critique him..

Oh I agree – SNF is one of the best movies evah as far as I’m concerned, and it’s also been critically praised as well – the story line is unbelievably good and the acting was terrific, especially from John Travolta himself. I have the soundtrack (which still ranks as one of the best selling movie soundtracks of all time), and I have the DVD – and *still* watch it to this day.

Honestly, I don’t get this creative freedom because a cd is sell stuff. Which is really how these guys creative freedom is determined. The only thing we have to go on, unless you know the guys personally, is their word and what we want to believe based on the usual cynical AI thinking.

What I am seeing is people using Kelly as bench mark for everyone else. They did it with Fantasia when she dropped her first cd, inwhich I thought made no sense. Am sure all of the other contestants want a career like Kelly’s but her creative freedom was not hers from the beginning and except for what she says, who really knows if it’s hers now. I am not under the belief that just because someone’s career is going the way of the AI thinking automatically means they are have all this creative freedom and when it’s not, they don’t. None of us really know how much creative freedom any of these guys really have and cd selling is not always the real clue. So we speculate and continue to believe what we want to believe..But, it’s all good…

One let down of SNF was the big dance contest when John Travolta and the dancing lady suppposed strut their stuff (who was she)? Did they even dance during that contest?; they just twirled and posed to More than a woman. All that practice for that?!? The Latino couple was def better. Many years ago, my friend and our husbands shared a hotel room before my brother’s wedding. I will never forget how we were almost late (although it was a relaxed backyard wedding) because we couldn’t pull ourselves away from all the laughs we had watching that movie. It is quite hilarious, if you are in the right mood. But I love that movie!

Ok ya – I guess I got confused because most of the stations playing him are considered “AC”, not “oldies”. To me there’s a difference – an oldies station plays stuff dating back decades and nothing newer than say 20 years ago, whereas an AC stations playes more current older songs… doesn’t matter, as long as it’s playing somewhere ;)

Very true. It’s great that there are so many genres of music to choose from. I find that I like most music just at different times. Well, maybe Barry will sing it on Wednesday, since Nigel made him give up his own song for The Chosen One.

And, a random Barry Gibb Factoid:

In 1978, he became the only songwriter to have four straight number one hits in the United States of America (U.S.), breaking the John Lennon and Paul McCartney 1964 record. These songs were “Stayin’ Alive”, “Love Is Thicker Than Water”, “Night Fever”, “If I Can’t Have You”. Five of his songs were in the U.S. top 10 at the same time in 1978.

  • CarieB

    Oh, Kirsten.

Can you post the lyrics to “Clive Talkin”? Sounds awesome.

Speaking of awesome, I think Blake will kick ass on “You Should be Dancin” but I sure hope he does it second. His other song choice? I don’t like…

  • calimari

Madaboutu, I think that writer actually liked Taylor. Called him a lunatic, yes, but Taylor was definately a performer unlike any other they had on Idol before. The writer also mentions that she predicted that Taylor would be high on the charts (as I think would be the case if his single came out on a timely manner, if it were a different single, and if AI had him on as a guest early on so fans of the show would know his album was out…and if he had a different “crack marketing team”)…..

  • Little Boy Blue

    Madaboutu,

Here’s the interesting sentence about the article you shared :

I just canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t imagine how any of them will manage as a successor to Taylor Hicks both as the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner and as the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner on tour.

    Because that guy was nuts.

The Season 5 Idol tour I heard was 98% sold out.

I guess It takes a nut to sell out an American Idol concert.

Maybe the presence of Sanjaya will help.

CarieB, thanks for posting. The 2nd one is the dance that John T and his partner use to “win” the dance contest. I’m laughing my butt off seeing that again. Classic!

Kirsten, “Clive Talking” sounds hilarious. Please share.

  • LB2

    Ok I can’t sleep – I hope I don’t crash during the show. =(

I’ve had BeeGee songs stuck in my head for two days now. I bet the performance order will be Blake, Melinda, Jordin, Lakisha because Lakisha hasn’t been last in a while. In the alternative, maybe Melinda will go first. They should have Blake last though if he does anything even as remotely interesting as last week.

I am excited about the show tonight and the songs they have picked! I think anyone of them could be eliminated depending on their performances. It will be interesting to see who TPTB pimp. I haven’t voted yet, but might tonight as I really really want Blake and Melinda to stay in.

DWTS – I absolutely adore Apolo and Julianne and hope they win it all. Laila is amazing and would be my next choice. Joey and Ian are very good too and I hope Billy Ray goes tonight. I agree with whoever said the girls had no fat on them – it in incredible how in shape they are. I would love to be able to dance like that!

Griz and Mad – so glad you guys finally got your concerts and I am so jealous about “Georgia”.

It has been so fun to watch all the Bee Gee song clips and the Saturday Night Fever ones too! Also Barbra and Barry. I love YouTube!

Okay back to the gym for me to try to get my 10,000 steps a day in (we are keeeping track at work for 4 weeks and are on teams). I am so tired from yesterday, I don’t think I will make it today but at least I will make an attempt.

5 1/2 hours till show time! whooo hoooo……

Thanks, pj, Carie, jersey. I was so excited I made a to do list of all the fun things I want to accomplish this summer.

Carie, I’m running off to bed right now to make sure I am here to fulfill recarpper duties (though star and pj do an excellent job as well). I love BeeGees music – I am so excited for tonight. =)

Here is a great article about Saturday Night Fever 30 years after the movie was released :

    http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NTQ4NzAzMGVkNGViYmM4OThjMzljMmMwNWI2OWQ5YjA=

    EXCERPT :

    The Richness of the Movie

This year is the 30th anniversary of SNF. Filming was wrapping up just about exactly thirty years ago as I write, and the movie premiered on December 7, 1977. By way of celebration I bought a DVD of the movie à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ a thing I rarely do. I have been sitting here in my study watching it on my computer. (It is not a family movie, certainly not in the nothing-spared DVD version). I can report that 30 years on, it is as good as ever à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ a beautiful, beautiful movie, a great movie.

Most movies are garbage. We try to have a family movie night once a week, on a Friday or a Saturday, playing some rented DVD from Netflix on the family TV. Dad likes a couple of glasses of wine with his dinner, and a couple of glasses of port afterwards. The family joke is to open a book on how far the movie will get before Dad falls asleep. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a rare movie that keeps me awake all the way through. (The Devil Wears Prada was the last one.) SNF, however, will never send me to sleep. I watched it all the way through three times before writing this, and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll watch it again this weekend if I get time.

My high opinion was not shared by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The 1977 Oscars were dominated by: Julia, a leftie swooner about anti-fascists in the 1930s; Annie Hall, the first of Woody Allenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s 295 movies about Woody Allenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s neuroses; and the original Star Wars. John Travolta got a Best Actor nomination for SNF, but no Oscar. So much for recognition of merit.

The first thing that struck me, watching SNF again after a lapse of years, was the richness of it. There is so much going on. How did they get it all into 118 minutes?

At its heart, the story is just boy-meets-girl. The boy, Tony Manero (John Travolta), is 19 and works in a paint store. In his leisure hours he hangs out with a little group of coevals: Double J, Joey, Bobby C, Gus. These are all working-class youngsters in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, a scruffy white-ethnic district at that time, though considerably yuppified since. On Saturday nights they go to the local disco, where Tony is the star dancer. The girl, Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney), is also an accomplished dancer. She shows up at the disco one night, catches Tonyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s eye, and the main plot line is under way.

It’s a long but interesting article analyzing the cultural effects of the movie…

  • meme

Just finished watching the links to SNF and John Travolta. I think it would be a hoot to have JT on as a contestant next year with DWTS. In my books John Travolta and Patrick Swazey fill my needs!

I have been thinking about AI6 and the performers in depth. This season is just so quirky as far as the idols themselves. Over the past few weeks I have more or less tuned in to see the British Invasion, BonJovi, and of course Bee Gees tonight. This is so wrong on the part of the producers doing this to the contestants. It is a show about them, and not our veteran idols. I am a loyal watcher of Idol Rewind and the simplistic way they started out with AI1.
    Is it 8pm yet :exclaim_ee:

GRIZ–my “Oldie Moldie” stations also interjects new releases every once in awhile. But what is far stranger…I have poor reception on my radio in the mornings so I listen to what I can get. The “hard” rock station plays Daughtry, of course, but he actually sounds old fashioned against the other (crap) they play. But then the other morning, they played Carrie’s “Before He Cheats”! Like how weird is that???

    Gene Siskel(1946-1999)…
Founder of the ‘Siskel abnd Ebert’ television show where intelligent weekly reviews of movies became must viewing.
SNF was his favorite movie. He saw it 17 times. And purchased Travolta’s white disco suit at a charity auction.

To me, SNF was an incredible sociological study of a certain time and place in the history of urban America, the ultimate video time capsule.

    re: the creative freedom stuff

I think an artist should have creative freedom with their careers. But there is a difference between a real artist and a product. Everyone who comes off of AI, all the people who don’t write there own songs, the people on the covers of magazines wearing bikini’s are products. The people that go on AI know that if they get signed by BMG they are being signed as products, not artists. Anyone who complains about how they don’t get creative freedom should have read the fine print in the contracts, or maybe actually questioned something.
With Kelly, I think she was just a really great singer who wanted to have a career. And she was in the first season where they really didn’t know what to except. I think everyone who joins the show now knows what they’re in for. If they don’t like it, they shouldn’t have done it. I’m always confused when people talk about people that were on the show saying a big “fuck you” to TPTB. Or how they manipulated the system. That’s just ridiculous. Nobody is smart enough to outsmart the masters of manipulation. They can’t win in this game, and if they don’t like it, they shouldn’t have played in the first place.
There are a ton of artists out there who are signed to independent labels who make their own music and go there own way. I think Taylor wanted to be known as a true artist, but most of all, he wanted to be famous. Because he didn’t have to sign the dotted line if he didn’t want to. It’ll take a very very long time to get out of Clive’s grasp.
Just like with Kelly now. She wants to come into her own and play songs she actually created, yet the company is having a problem. How are they going to market it? That’s there only concern.
And that’s exactly why I hope Blake doesn’t win because I think he’s got some good original material that could make it on its own, on a different label. They will never allow him to do what he wants.

  • Little Boy Blue

The interesting thing about the National review article is how John Travolta played Tony Manero. Here is how he is described ( which is spot on ) :

Tony Manero is what used to be called a diamond in the rough. Crude and classless (as Stephanie tells him bluntly), he is none the less a natural gentleman, with all the right instincts (as Stephanie grasps, at some less conscious level).

    * After losing it with his mother, Tony at once feels terrible and tries to comfort her, his voice cracking for the only time in the movie.

    * Having decided to break with Annette, he tells her directly, with a proper apology.

    * After telling Stephanie one of those little white lies, he is immediately ashamed, as a gentleman should be, and covers with the truth.

    …….

This fundamental decency comes out plainly in the scene where Mr. Fusco, Tonyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s boss at the paint store, gives him a raise.

Fusco: I gave you a raise.
    Tony: A what?
    Fusco: A raise.
    Tony: You kiddinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ me?
Fusco: Come on, look, see how much it is.
Tony: You gave me a raise? Thank you! [Extends hand to shake.] I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe this!
Fusco: [Embarrassed at the not-yet-revealed smallness of the raise.] Hold on, you better look first.
Tony: I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t gotta look, it makes no difference. You gave me a raise, thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the important thing.
Fusco: [Somewhat shamed by Tonyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s reaction.] Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s only two fifty.
    Tony: So what?

Tony understands instinctively that, to what Confucius called the junzi, the superior man, honor, recognition, and right conduct mean everything, money nothing.

not unlike the way Kelly Clarkson finally did.

Did I miss something? When did Kelly take charge?

Yes, she changed her management team and, apparently, they are à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“VERYà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ supportive of her. (She was allowed far more creative freedom from what I understand.) Folowing her change were two grammys so I guess it was a smart move on her part! (God, I love her!!!)

Once again, this Idol myth resurfaces.

Kelly Clarkson was managed by Simon Fuller during the period in which both “Thankful” and “Breakaway” — for which she won her Grammys — were recorded and released.

The Firm had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with “Breakaway.”

  • B

I think people fail to realize that Clive Davis isn’t evil. He’s not “the enemy” by any standards.

He truly, truly doesn’t see his artists as puppets who he controls.

He appreciates musicians and gives them free reign if he feels they deserve it and if their original material is good. He invests money in these artists in the form of $ as well as man power. Alica Keyes, The Boss, Gavin Degraw…these are people who he gives a lot of freedom to.

If Kelly can prove to Clive that she is capable of writing a hit song, he’ll give her more freedom. But if she comes out with crap like “Never Again” on Clive’s dollar, she’s not doing her career any favors.

A lot of people in the music industry are musicians themselves. Clive isn’t, but I know of a handful of execs who claim that they were musicians who happened to fall into the business after discovering they had a knack for it. They appreciate music not just a means for meeting a bottom line, but as a means of expression.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing Blake tonight. I think it’s the first time all season i’ve been really excited to see a performance from anyone this season.

Just to be “REAL CLEAR” here…I do not think Daughtry is crap…far from it! I think the other stuff they play is! And they play all of the Daughtry songs that are currently on the chart.

Now you are asking me a question I am going to have to think about…the radio station…it’s Jonathan Rush of the “You’re on the air, do not curse” fame. (Someone cursed on the air about 10 years ago, they got fined by the FCC and he still says that when he answers the phone!) Maybe 104.??? I am sorry but I can’t recall the station number. The oldies station I usually listen to when I can tune it in is 106.7–the one I prefer.

    Princess P”
    From Mark Edward Nero,
    Your Guide to R & B.

    Youthful Freshness
Guide Rating – 3 out of 5 stars

Back when Paris Bennett appeared as a precocious teenager on the fifth season of American Idol in 2006, two things were pretty clear: one, that she had a tremendous amount of potential; and second, that she hadn’t quite managed to harness her talent yet. Well, Paris is back with her debut album, Princess P, and she’s managed to rapidly grow as an artist in the year since she was on Idol. Although still a teenager, Paris displays a vocal maturity and poise way beyond her age, yet still manages to maintain a youthful freshness.

Save the Beatboxer, Save the World!

  • SpenserJ

For example, I had no idea Jessica Sierra was working at hooters or that she briefly dated Nikko Smith after AI (seriously Nikko? Why?)

Afan, Clearwater, FL is the birthplace of Hooters. Therefore, we have more than our fair share here in the greater Tampa Bay Area. All of the skanks must do their time there. It’s like a rule we have.

  • NOLA

I know, pj. It’s just everytime we have a Save So and So night, a frontrunner gets the boot. I wouldn’t bother me if it were Jordin; but I sure would hate to see Blake or Melinda go home tomorrow night.

Me too. That’s my dream finale. Although I win cash if Jordin wins.

NOLA, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not saving Kiki! Team Plaid all the way, baby!!!

This is a tough one for me. My main interest lies in Team Plaid. However, I really want Kiki to be in the top three. So, I’m thinking about this: One vote for kiki for every 2 or 3 votes for Blake. I haven’t decided yet though.

I like to call this the “Please let Jordin Get The Boot” plan.

  • emeralgem

NOLA, I decided last week to vote for LaKisha. I personally feel she does NOT deserve to leave before Jordin.

  • NOLA

One vote for kiki for every 2 or 3 votes for Blake.

Spenser, looks good on paper; but, just as happened on “Save Anthony” night, everybody tossed him a few votes and Anthony
was saved while Constantine departed. Splitting votes is a
sure fire way of getting your fav eliminated.

We shall see how this plays out. Good luck, everybody.

  • pj

Spense, I see your dilemma. However, I do not share it. LOL Still, any votes for Blake help him, after all :)

  • NOLA

em, you won’t get any argument from me.
Kiki does deserve to stay longer than Jordin.

  • JulieR

Hello….. why are my posts going into moderation….?

ETA: I guess they aren’t now. lol

pj – I love the team plaid beverage!

  • emeralgem

NOLA… I have never split votes, and I haven’t voted for anyone this season.

  • pj

    JulieR, it’s quite tasty!

Wait – there was a Save Anthony night? Whatever for?

See, I’m probably not smart enough to understand the cause and effect of the split vote theory. But, whatever I decide, my concience will be clear. If I vote many more times for Blake than I do for Lakisha even if Blake were to go home, it’s a mathematic impossibility for that to be my personal fault. :)

ETA: Should Kiki tank tonight, I’ll cut her loose faster than an NFL quaterback turfs his pregnant girlfriend.

I haven’t voted all season but I may just have to vote for Jordin after all. All the crap she is getting is undeserved IMO. Lakisha should have been gone weeks ago especially after that absolutely terrible performance of Jesus Take The Wheel. Melinda and Blake will be the final two anyway- and Blake will win based on his “originality.”

  • emeralgem

    PEEPS GET READY… SHOWTIME…

  • longsong

I’m dusting off my phone and voting for Lakisha. So help me, if Jordin lasts longer than her….Yes I realize SHE’S ONLY 17, but for cryin’ out loud!!!!

I know Lakisha needs to develop more warmth, etc., but that doesn’t seem to have hurt Carrie Underwood, who I consider just as “warm and fuzzy”.

  • longsong

Ooh! I missed the fact that VFTW had picked Lakisha as it’s successor to Phil! :clap_tb: Doesn’t seem to be helping according to DI though….. :sad_tb:

  • Desdemona

Lakisha is in deep trouble so far – know we’re only 30 minutes into the first voting hour, and much can change, but….not looking good right now. I am voting, voting, voting – got more than a dozen votes in before they finished the show tonight – the lines were open and I got the recording “Thanks for voting for Contestant #3″. Have hardly gotten a busy signal for either of her lines. I redial one and if it’s busy, go to the next one and keep redialing it until I get a busy signal.

Jordin’s first song was absolutely gorgeous though.

  • longsong

Man, looks like there’s no help for it. Lakisha’s going home.

Yeah, Jordin’s good, but for some reason she’s just started bugging me these last few weeks. I can’t put my finger on it….

  • shar

I personally think any of them could go after this crap show and it wouldn’t be a horrible thing, but I am voting for Lakisha because I love her voice and want to see her in the top three.

Bee Gee’s music seems to be very hard to sing, none of them gave outstanding performanes, imo. I hope next week’s theme is a little more mainstream.

    Save Lakisha!

  • shar

Oh yeah, I forgot to add, did you know Jordin is ONLY 17?

And, one good thing about the judges panning Melinda, she lost her aw shucks look at last!

  • amys

WOO hoo! Taylor’s summer concert in Cary, NC is finally confirmed… tickets on sale Saturday. I’ll finally be able to just drive down the road to see him instead of making another trip (although it has been worth it).

  • longsong

Man, Barry seemed to like Jordin. Curses!

Still, I’m torn now. I want to save Lakisha, but not at the cost of losing Melinda! Maybe Jordin could be convinced to voluntarily leave. She is just 17 after all….

  • shar

I hate to say it, I think Barry Gibbs used to be hot as in sizzlin’, but man, he looked like 20 miles of bad road tonight and his voice sounded like a bad Sean Connery does James Bond imitation.

Longsong, maybe we could convine Jordin that 4th is really the new first.

  • emeralgem

Well,I have voted for the past hour, and I have gotten through almost every time on LaKisha’s line. I’m afraid she may be gone…Also, I do NOT want to jeopardize Melinda since Blake and Jordin are ahead on Dialidol…. She’s too good.

  • Nostradamas

Blake just PROVED he has NO place in the finals…..NONE!

No tone, no pitch control, just a gimmick….and a 15 year old gimmick at that.

I loved Melinda….really liked Jordin and enjoyed Kiki’s 2nd song.

That giant sucking sound was Blake’s attempt at musicality.

  • WVIdolFan

Last week when I voted for kiki i got through almost everytime and thought she was out but she wssnt. Tonights show was one of the seasons worst, imo. I think, for me, Im used to hearing their songs sung by 3 voices with harmonies, and hearing a solo, the vocal just sounded thin in contrast. I didnt like the rearrangements any of them sung. If it had been a good night, I dont think Melindas 2 songs wouldve passed the radar, they were just so so. Blake was horrible on both. Jordin had problems on both. I did not like her version of You Dont KNow What Its Like, at all. Thats my fav BG song and she ruined it. Didnt think she was very good on the last one either. Lakisha did better on Stayin Alive then I thought, but her rearrangement on the last part was awful and I didnt like the second song at all, although she sounded ok. No real winners tonight. And before I forget, next week its Paula’s turn to tell us Jordin is only 17 since it was Simons turn tonight and Randys last night.

  • WVIdolFan

Last week, not last night. sigh, cant’ edit.

  • pj

I have gotten through for Blake a lot. He will get a ton of votes from me tonight. :)

  • Stefunny

And, one good thing about the judges panning Melinda, she lost her aw shucks look at last!

Aw…she hasn’t had that for several weeks now. And how cute was the Michael Jackson “Bad” comment? I love Melinda’s dorkiness.

  • emeralgem

    I loved Melindaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.really liked Jordin and enjoyed Kikià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s 1st song.

    _____________
I thought Melinda was GREAT on both songs…Kiki was good on Stayin Alive, but I did NOT like her rendition of Run To Me..
Jordin’s, first song was GREAT, her second one was just OK for me but I do NOT like her, so I want her gone..
I thought Blake’s rendition of Feel Like Dancing was a nightmare..
His second song was just meh IMO..

And Barry is looking OLD at 60….

  • Paula

I hate to say it, I think Barry Gibbs used to be hot as in sizzlinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢, but man, he looked like 20 miles of bad road tonight

He was hot — I had a crush on him for years, but I think his brother Mo’s death really aged him. And now the latest I heard is that he and Robin (his other brother) are on the outs.

  • emeralgem

I think his brother Moà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s death really aged him. And now the latest I heard is that he and Robin (his other brother) are on the outs.
    ——————–

He and Robin being on the outs after losing two brothers is truly SAD..

  • sexygirl

For the first time this season I did not do the chatroom and listening to the AI contestants thing. I actually choose to watch the show instead. Wow, tonight was quite interesting. I think everyone but Blake needs to stay. I don’t care how much one wants to assume Blake is creative, there is nothing creative about taking every song and making it sound like Jamiroquai. Especially when Jamiroquai can actually sing and Blake can’t. Even worst, every song sounds like it’s stuck in the early ninties. That is not creative. That is bad..

I have always felt that Blakes vocals were very limited and the beatbox and record scratching was done to compensate for it. Tonight, he proved me right. He was bad with a capital B on both songs. To add insult to injuries, he tries to add scratching sounds to a song like staying alive. He’s tooking a hit song and moved it from the eighties to the ninties. He might as well had just left the song in it’s orignal state and sang it like that.

I know he will not be leaving tomorrow. Unfortunately, it’s to late for that. Lakisha will be sacrificed for him.

  • Paula

I agree with you sexygirl. I have never thought he was a good singer at all, and I’m in the minority, but tonight proves that he just ain’t got it.

  • Desdemona

There is a HUGE jump in the DI scores between the “Top Two” and the “Bottom Two” right now – is there still 1 hour and (almost) 45 minutes left for West Coast voting? I have 10:17 PM CST.

  • madaboutu

Desdemona……….it is now 8:22 here on the west coast.

  • Desdemona

I so don’t want either Melinda OR Lakisha to leave tomorrow, and unless things change (or DI can’t be believed again), one of them will be gone. :(

  • Desdemona

Right, mad – did your voting start 22 minutes ago? I don’t know what time AI comes on in Calif.

  • madaboutu

Well, which one do you think the PTB really want?

  • madaboutu

Des…………it just came on at 8 PM., so about half an hour ago. Jordin is singing YDKWIL.

  • jeannie

I voted for Melinda solid for about a hour and a half and got in every time I tried.

  • Desdemona

I think the PTB “still” want Jordin after all.

  • pj

I know he will not be leaving tomorrow. Unfortunately, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s to late for that. Lakisha will be sacrificed for him.

I’ll admit that he didn’t have his best night. No one did. But to say someone is “sacrificed” for him is a little over the top. There are four left in the competition. To me, Blake has been the most consistant other than Melinda. And far more interesting than Melinda. That’s why he gets my votes.

I get that some don’t like him. Fine and dandy. I hope the Kiki lovers voted really hard for her. If enough do, she will be safe. Plus, she gets the worster votes.

I voted hard for Blake. :)

  • jeannie

You’re absolutely right about Jordin. She’s had the pimp spot how many times? I mean really!

  • Desdemona

Thanks, mad. We get it beginning at 7 PM CST, so voting started at 8 and over at 10 (I voted solid for the first hour, slacked off the second hour. Amazing how many votes you can get with redial, hangup, redial, etc!)

So, voting will be over – for everyone – in approx 2 1/2 hours. Things “could” change if the West Coast votes differently than East & Central.

  • neonorange

Tonight kinda tanked and I was so hoping for a least one kick ass performance. Oh well, there is still a very promising group number tomorrow – there better be a least one pointy pose dammit!

Thankfully, the night was saved by Princess P :clap_tb: Just bought “Let Me Rap” – Paris Bennett featuring Kevin Covais (AKA Chicken Little). “Kevin always got your back, like yo coat do!” I fuckin LOVE it!!!!

  • madaboutu

We do everything different than the East and Central. LOL
Actually, American Idol is not the top show in L.A. DWTS is, and then all Spanish soaps. Right now, we have a potentially disastrous fire up in the Hollywood Hills again, in Griffith Park where the observatory that they apent ten years renovating is, the zoo, the stables, and lots of homes and the studios etc. Way more important than AI.

  • madaboutu

I kept trying to think of who Blake reminds me of physically and I thought of it. He reminds me of the guy who played Sqiggy on Laverne and Shirley. :)

  • neonorange

mad, hope your in a safe area. Were covered in smoke here in Florida too. I thought it was fog this mornin’ but it turned out to be brush fires.

  • madaboutu

I meant Squiggy if thats how you spell it. LOL

  • bean99

I also voted hard for Blake, PJ. I liked his vocals tonight if not all of the beatboxing. My beef is the genre. Bee Gee songs just aren’t good for most singers. They’ve never been my favorite at best of times but I’m looking back fondly to all of the other weeks.

  • madaboutu

neon………..yes, where I live is safe from everything but earthquakes which rarely happen. (crossed fingers since we are due) But Griffith Park is a jewel and is right in the middle of the city with potential to cross down into the valley. Now they are saying they are evacuating the zoo. OMG what a task that is going to be.
I know you in Fla. have had lots of fires the last few years too, and isn’t there one in Ga. right now too. It is very strange weather. So hot for this time of year, and especially in SF where it was 80 today. Very unusual for them.

  • neonorange

The fires are in GA and northern FL but the smoke is reaching us down here in Tampa. Some brush fires also started in Sarasota (just south of Tampa). They have issued a health advisory because of the smoke. I recall a few years back that east Florida has some brush fires but the smoke never traveled this far before that I can recall. It looks like fog but when you step outside you can smell the smoke and your eyes start burning a bit. It’s really freaky!

I hope the animals in the zoo will be okay – hopefully they have a good evacuation plan.

  • madaboutu

neon………..I understand how that is. Sometimes when we get fires, like in Malibu, we get not only the smoke but ash all the way over here.
I think Jordin did good on both of her songs, Melinda too. It’s probably going to come down to them.

  • neonorange

I want an 80′s alternative rock night on idol. I am listening to Violent Femmes and Psychedelic Furs right now and am having fun thinking of Melida, Lakisha and Jordin singing these songs. Although you could throw REM in there and they would have a lot to choose from. Or in honor of Blake’s hometown Seattle, they could do some Grudge music. I just don’t want to hear any more power ballads. I thought I was safe tonight with BeeGees but dammit if those girls didn’t find some.

  • madaboutu

neon………they at least need some PTFMWB or Renegade to liven things up.:) They have started issuing mandatory evacuations downtown, so I am going to try to find a station that has info. This could really be disastrous. Have a good nite.

  • neonorange

Wow. Fires on East and west coast and tornados in the Midwest. Freaky weather indeed. I don’t see anything on the news websites yet about CA, yet. Will keep you guys over there in my thoughts and pray that everyone is safe.

  • maracaibo

I also voted hard for Blake, PJ. I liked his vocals tonight if not all of the beatboxing. My beef is the genre. Bee Gee songs just arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t good for most singers. Me too pj. I just think it was this theme that killed him.
It’s amazing how a theme can eithe make you or break you.
I am just rewinding all of his previous performances. Gosh he did so amazing on Latin night with Jlo, The best ever with Bon JOvi.
    Who would have thunk it?
I still think Blake will get the pimp spot on Top 3 night and will make a cmeback once again. JMHO.

  • weelassie

I must be weird but there was a part of Blake’s first song that I thought was absolutely brilliant. Cracked me up when Randy said don’t beatbox every time. Until last week, Blake hadn’t cracked a beat box move in weeks. Randy said he should use it more now he tells him to not use it. geez.

  • maracaibo

By the way Blake has a great recording voice.. Have you guys heard his mp3′s? Just saying… Sigh. Give the guy a break.
He had the BEST EVER performance last week and it was hard to top it off with a Bee Gees theme.
He has been as consistant as Melinda.
He will have a great career and be very successful I am sure.

  • weelassie

Just a reminder in case anyone has forgotten, Jordin is just 17;)

  • weelassie

Ok, this reminder is for real, Mother’s Day is on Sunday if anyone has cards they need to get mailed out:)

  • griz

A thoroughly disappointing night – kinda got a nauseous feeling after each song by all of them – very amateurish, bland and uninspiring. Sigh… kind of wraps up the whole season for me.
