“Idol” not tone deaf to poverty

Do you find it obnoxious when super-rich people in the music industry come forward to preen about their exquisitely sensitive social consciences?

Is there something worse than a multimillion-dollar televised entertainment operation patting itself on the back for weeks on end in celebration of its brilliantly inventive and groundbreaking approach to philanthropy?

Actually there is something worse: a total indifference to human suffering. If pampered stars and their corporate patrons have a hankering for public approval or à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ could it be? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ a sense of authentic obligation, perhaps that behavior should be encouraged…

Guest Opinion: ‘American Idol’ votes can help needy kids win, too

Quentin Joe, an 11-year-old Navajo boy, lives with his mom and four siblings in a one-room dwelling in Chinle, with no running water and few amenities à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ not even a TV set. He has never seen “American Idol,” but this week, more than 30 million “Idol” viewers will meet Quentin on prime-time Fox television.
While Quentin lacks many material things, he shares a quality with all “Idol” contestants: guts. When his family’s trailer home caught fire in January, Quentin ran into the burning trailer, not once, but twice, to find and save his baby sister. When asked why he did it, Quentin explained, “She’s family…….

LaKisha needs a change of song and attitude

It’s crunch time for LaKisha Jones.

Last week, the 27-year-old singer from Flint narrowly escaped the indignity of being booted off “American Idol” before Sanjaya Malakar.

Tonight, she needs to do something spectacular. Otherwise, she could be staring up at the great big screen of bye-bye clips on Wednesday night.

Why is Kiki in such a precarious spot? How can she reclaim her status as a front-runner?

Here are three factors to keep an eye on as the show presents this week’s theme, “Idol Gives Back,” a two-night fund-raiser to help children and young people in extreme poverty in America and Africa….

South Asia breaks into American pop

Sanjaya Malakar’s attempt to become the next “American Idol” is recent history. But what he represents is probably the future, albeit a distant one.
People of South Asian descent make up a relatively new immigrant population in the United States, just about 2 million people out of 300 million here. They don’t yet have the clout to create a runaway hit, says Aseem Chhabra, a columnist for Mumbai Mirror and freelance entertainment writer.

But South Asians have made great strides in gaining solid footing in the American cultural landscape in the past decade as the children of a large wave of immigrants from the late 1960s began coming of age…

    Producers prepare for possible strike
Schedules for TV shows and movies are moved up ahead of contract talks with writers

…Hit shows such as Fox’s “American Idol” are not only hugely popular, but they are also cheaper to produce than scripted programs. And most reality shows aren’t covered under the Writers Guild contracts despite efforts by the union to organize the booming sector…

Sanjaya’s gone, but big stars fill the void

…As a group, this year’s finalists have been the least charismatic in the show’s history, so Sanjaya served one purpose. He kept people talking about the show during what has not been a scintillating season. His exit could not have been better timed, with the Amercican Idol Gives Back special this week and the countdown reaching the stage after next week when only the real contenders figure to be left.

There might be an overkill of self-congratulation for American Idol Gives Back, but the show and Fox deserve kudos for scheduling the blockbuster special during the two nights just preceding the important May ratings sweeps period, which begins Thursday. Then again, Idol doesn’t need any help. There’s a reason rival networks have dubbed it The Death Star.

Here’s some serious advice for ‘American Idol’ singers

“American Idol” takes a serious turn tonight as it airs the first installment of a two-part special aimed at raising awareness about impoverished children in the United States and Africa.

But that’s not the only sobering aspect of Fox’s top-rated singing contest lately. The TV show is down to its final six singers, who need to buckle down more than ever.

Since this week’s show doesn’t feature a celebrity mentor, “Idol” Worship will fill the void by suggesting one concrete thing that each contestant can do to boost his or her stock. The would-be Idols are listed from most to least likely to win, along with a comment why….

Unlocking the Mystery of American Idol’s Success

At last I have figured out why American Idol is such a modest success. (Though it is treated as if it receives record breaking ratings, in fact American Idol regularly is seen by only about three to five million more viewers than Murder She Wrote at the peak of that show’s success. I don’t remember the media attention given Angela Lansbury that any of the singers on American Idol get.) At first I assumed it was, like other talent shows, supposed to be a showcase for talented singers. I know from experience that there are many, many singers toiling in obscurity who are far better than such superstars as Michael Bolton and Britney Spears. As such, I could only assume that many of these talented nobodies would make it onto American Idol. Regardless, since I care not for these kinds of shows, I’ve never actually watched an entire episode of American Idol. That was my problem…….

Sanjaya’s spark may be gone, but a half-dozen Idol’ wannabes remain

And then there were six — but Sanjaya’s not one of them. Break out the black armbands.

Last week, the man-child with the Wallace & Gromit smile — wearing a “Life is Beautiful” T-shirt the night he was axed — cried on the ample shoulder of Idol hopeful LaKisha Jones.

`Idol’ advice: Try to prove there’s life after Sanjaya
REMAINING SINGERS NEED TO GENERATE BUZZ

Sanjaya’s gone! It’s not too late. We can still bust out the confetti.

Admittedly, I’m a little worried about “Idol’s” ratings and buzz now that Hairy Hairdini has been voted out. Do the remaining contestants have the ability to capture the country’s imagination? They could, if they follow the advice I’m about to unload on them:

Idol puts its celebrity to good use

American Idol, making the world a better place.

Sounds odd, doesn’t it? Because for a show that turns product placement into low art, a show that revels in humiliation, materialism and parochialism, Idol connotes “global philanthropy” in the same way Paris Hilton connotes “chaste virtue.”

Mind you, last week’s expulsion of Sanjaya Malakar did feel charitable. And holy cornflake moonbeams, Paula is actually making sense, so there’s that.

But still. Given the show’s influence and vast fortune à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ according to one estimate, the franchise as worth more than $2.5 billion (U.S.) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ imagine what Idol could do if a conscience was to ripen atop its well-rooted capitalist tree…

…Performances will be mixed with footage of the “Idol” judges visiting Africa and spots in the U.S., such as New Orleans. Ellen DeGeneres has been signed to host tomorrow’s two-hour “Idol Gives Back” special.

“It’s something that’s done in Europe, this kind of charity entertainment show, which is mixed in with music and comedy, and it’s very successful,” “Idol” executive producer Ken Warwick told reporters.

The concept was developed by film producer Richard Curtis in England, where similar events were huge in the past.

Tonight’s show will have the six remaining contestants singing songs of compassion and hope, while Wednesday’s show will be a huge blowout, with someone being sent home. Already the project has raised $15 million in corporate donations…

Meet the 6 ‘Idol” finalists … and the winner

Drat. I know we’ve all been whining about the odd choices in this year’s Top 12, but with Hayley, Antonella and now Sanjaya gone, we’re now at my least favorite part of the season – when the clearly out-of-their-league folks are gone and some truly talented people feel the fateful force of the boot.

Of course, I’m not the first person to point out that there were way too many mediocre people this season to be begin with. And maybe the Idol producers need to re-examine their dependence on buffoon footage during the auditions, because it’s obviously contributed to the first part of Season Six being turned into Clown Town.

But that’s behind us, thankfully. We move forward quickly to next month’s finale – and I think it’s in this order:

    Hey, Avril: `Thing’ is, like, a rip-off

…The songwriting is weaker than on her previous two albums, though there are plenty of sugary pop hooks and a slick, punked-up guitar sound that exists solely in $1,000-a-day recording studios. The reason: “The Best Damn Thing” features the producers behind Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Green Day and My Chemical Romance.

“Girlfriend” isn’t the only musical homage: Thumpy beats on the title track mimic any number of Black Eyed Peas tunes, and the careening guitars on “Everything Back But You” would have fit on “American Idiot” if Green Day had been railing at boys instead of politicians.

Still, evoking other people’s chart-topping tunes is a savvy bid to duplicate Lavigne’s earlier commercial success, even if “The Best Damn Thing” is, like, so whatever.

That whole Ken Warwick interview was so full of itself. The only reason I can come up with that half of it was defending Simon on the Eye-roll-gate is that they were trying to distract us from focusing on something else they are up to.

Oh yeah and Ken, since the sound system evidently works great for when the contestants are singing, can you ask the judges to at least pay attention then. There is a very clear shot of Simon pulling on Paula’s nose when Phil is singing last week. Meet America’s Youngest Fame Junkies

….Why do more people watch the ultimate competition for celebrityhood, American Idol, than watch the nightly news on the three major networks combined? How come the average teenage boy desires fame almost as much as intelligence–while the average teenage girl craves fame more than intelligence? And why do 43.4% of teenage girls say that they want to be a “celebrity personal assistant” when they grow up, while only 13.6% say they’d want to be a U.S. Senator?

Halpern answers these and other questions by traveling to America’s fame factories and profiling a colorful and surprisingly insightful cast of characters. He talks to diehard fans, personal assistants, aspiring stars, and celebrities like Rod Stewart and U2′s The Edge. It ticks me off that they passed two 17 year old kids through this season.. One has received nothing but praise, the other was humilated before millions..
I for one think they should change the age limit.. No one should be allowed to compete unless they are 18 or older..

    “Dear Katharine McPeePee,

Stop bringing sexy back. You’re about as sexy as a wet fart in a hot car.”

From yesterday’s Dlisted (big web gossip) site under a picture of Kat making sexy faces. I know this is mean but it’s just so funny that I’d post it even if it was about one of my Idol favs I swear.

  • JJ

    I love jpfan.

That pro-family america group urging people to not give because it includes charities like Unicef creeps me out. That’s the slime I need to get washed off…

    From the Ken Warwick Article:

“Ken Warwick: To be honest with you, luckily, … with all due modesty, we’re big enough that the ratings don’t actually bother us too much at this stage. We know that we’re going to be bigger than anybody else. We know we’re up on last year. That’s not likely to change.”

That’s not what the officially reported ratings are telling us. As MJs rating charts show us, performance nights are down about 10% from the previous year. I guess if you tell a lie frequently enough, people will believe you.

Ken: “And if we came in and started getting bogged down on what the ratings were last night and why some set of demographics did that and why other demographics did the other, then we’d be chasing ourselves around a tree. So the truth is, we honestly don’t pay that much attention to it.”

    Ken is funny.

Elliottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s celebrity playlist actually made me a fan of one of his picks: Marc Broussard.

More from the Ken Article that I find interesting:

Questioner asks if Sanjaya and Haley will be able to get endorsement deals

Ken: “Generally I don’t think they – to be absolutely honest, Jeanie, I’m not sure if there’s a time. I know with regards to taking up recording contracts or promoting themselves in the music business, that there is a very definite wait. They have to wait until the Idol has released their song. They can’t contaminate that market for I think, three months, minimum.”

Is he just refering to the coronation song or it this a new rule? If it is the coronation song, maybe this is where the long rumoured “wait 3 months for the album” rule came from.

  • Lisa B

They didn’t seem to mind the market being ‘contaminated’ last season.

  • abbysee

The market has been contaminated since season 2. What’s new?

Here is another exchange I find interesting:

Reporter: Right. But they often miss what the contestants say.

Ken Warwick: They always miss what the contestants say

If they ALWAYS miss what the contestants say, then how did Simon hear the nasally comment in the first place? Use some logic. You don’t need to overstate your case.

  • Metta

My new theory is that they want Jordin to win because she’ll be the easiest to market of the remaining contestants. I used to think that was Chris Richardson, but the winning Idol has to pull off a lot of live performances. Chris can be fixed in the studio, but outside? Not so much. What say you, MJers?

  • jpfan

“They canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t contaminate that market for I think, three months, minimum”
I think this measn they have to wait 3 monthes after the AI top 12 CD to release their own. I just don’t see any of this year’s crew having a fan base big enough to support a six month wait for a CD. Even Sanjaya, that joke will be worn thin by next fall. That’s why Season 5 was so awesome. Bucky’s CD which is one of the last to be released will still dominate Billboard charts this week. Do you think the world will be waiting for that Blake CD by May, 2008? I think this year only the top 2 will actually have albums.

  • Metta

    Are we snippy today?

Is that like some hip hop term for accurately assessing character?

    The Bullcrap

Rickey Hoe Guardian, is, apparently, a spoiler over at idol forums. He supposedly has inside information on a certain show. I have received several emails through my blog of people asking me why I leaked information and that I hate Phil, because I leaked information, etc.

Buckyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s CD which is one of the last to be released will still dominate Billboard charts this week. Do you think the world will be waiting for that Blake CD by May, 2008?

Really? I was cheering for Bucky last year, but I was worried that if he didn’t get a contract right away, he too would be forgotten. At the same point in the Idol run, I would rate Blake’s chances as higher. It seems that every second song the guy sings ends up making the top 50 download for that week.

But, the future is hard to predict (who foresaw Kevin Covias being the first Idol 5 contestant to win a role in a feature length film?)

Go Bucky! I’m thrilled that others also saw the potential in him and he was given his chance. He is getting great first week numbers.

  • Little Boy Blue

Chris Sligh in his latest blog comes out criticizing Ricky Hoe Guardian ( is that really his middle name ? Imus take note ).

As seen in the link that Lisa B posted, here is a telling excerpt :

Rickey has claimed that I “probably” received the lowest number of votes, but no matter what I was going home the week that I went home (even if I received more votes than someone else) because of reasons I will give in points 3 & 4. Sorry, it’s bullcrap. I have no doubt in my mind that I received the lowest amount of votes. If they had wanted to send me home unfairly, Nigel and Ken could have done the week before. There were things that happened behind the scenes (again things that fall under my confidentiality agreement) that make me assured that my leaving was because I received the fewest amount of votes. And guess what? I’m not complaining! I had a great run on the show, and left when America decided it was time for me to leave – not Nigel and Ken. My dreams are coming true right and left…some silly little spoiler kid isn’t gonna make me bitter with some bullcrap story about how I supposedly wasn’t supposed to go home, or whatnot. I’m content with how things turned out.

I find it really hilarious that I got Chris Sligh to write a blog about me; especially considering I know the truth. I don’t care who believes me or not, but he straight up lied to your faces. If Chris Sligh would’ve been spoiling to me — lets face it, this all wouldn’t be happening! But calling me a liar and also spoiling with someone else. Oh shit, Big MISTAKE! Chris Sligh throughout the season would give themes and guest mentors to a certain someone else on IDF, and that week where I wasn’t doing spoilers and a certain someone else posted a list and it began to get altered a bit — that info was from Chris Sligh. The week Gina sang Pretenders, Melinda / Lakisha sang Donna Summer songs. Recall telling a friend that, Sligh? ;) I know you do, because you did!……

This is very funny. Ricky even has jpgs. of his emails up to prove his point.

I do think that they’re both partially telling the truth. I’ve never believed that Ricky could obtain any vote rankings. The information is too confidential.

On the other hand, I did think Sligh provided some spoilers (perhaps a few songs) while he was on the show. The spoilers have noticeably ended being comprehensive since top 10 week.

    As for Blake:
“Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the only one I see Clive even thinking about signing if he doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t win though.”

  • Kirsten

Sligh: In fact, I usually didn’t even know other people’s (outside of my close friends on the show) song choices till the day of the show because of how rehearsal schedules worked.

I’m not sure if that is a credible claim. They meet on Saturdays with the mentor and they go over all the songs. As the Blake-beat-boxing-for-Haley shows, they appear to all be in the same room waiting for their 5 minutes with the mentor.

Besides, when I go to lunch with friends, we are all “what are you thinking of ordering”. I can’t imagine that contestants don’t ask the other contestants what they will be singing while waiting for the director to figure out the blocking for the Ford commercial each Sunday. Humans are curious creatures.

    Whatever.

Sligh may have deleted his version of the blog, but it is probably pasted in a bunch of places already. This genie is out of the bottle.

Four of the remaining six idols are strongly connected to Christian music. No insult but when/if Blake leaves, this is one bland crew.

Okay, it’s obvious you do not listen to Christian music…

Sorry to say this but I’m jumping on the indifferent bandwagon as far as Blake is concerned. Blake is one lucky dude to be part of a season where he’s being pushed as the most exciting of all the contestants. Bucky currently has the number 4 Album on the HDD sales prediction list for this week. He finished 8th last year.

Ayla Brown finished 13th last and her single is bounding up the AC airplay chart.

Kellie Pickler, last year’s 6th place finisher, has a gold selling record, is touring with a HUGE name in country music and regularly does comedy routines on Leno.

If he gets the boot this week (which I don’t think he will), Blake will be fine.

    Here ya go:

    1. Elliott Yamin – sold over 100,000 cds. He was able to record exactly what he wanted ’cause he didn’t win.
    2. Daughtry – ’nuff said
    3. Bucky Covington – was eliminated way back there at 8. Will prolly sell close to 60K this week and be in the Billboard 200 Top 10
    4. Jennifer Hudson – ’nuff said.
    5. Josh Gracin – Came in 4th Season 2, has a nice little career in country music going.
    6. Kimberley Locke – About to drop her second CD, has a single that’s just about to crack the Top 10 of the Adult Contemporary chart

Most ex-Idols still have a career in show business. Only a handful have gone back to their day jobs.

Blake is my favorite right now. I’d be a little irked if he was eliminated this week, but all it would mean is that he’d be missing from my Tee Vee the next couple of weeks.

I also have to say, I certainly hope he does NOT win. Third place would be very nice for him, I think.

I think he will get signed, nevertheless.

  • pj

I think Blake would have done well in any season of Idol that I have watched (4&5). He brings something “fresh” to the Idol stage with his song choices and style. He’s totally comfortable too, whereas Phil and ChrisR often seem a bit awkward to me. I love Blake’s voice and it sounds great recorded. He’s not a belter, but I don’t enjoy belters. LOL.

    Hi Everyone!

Well, I for one am VERY interested to see what happens this week. I think they are all in danger, just because this week will bring a lot of people watching and voting who have not been doing either this season. So, people will not vote based on contestant’s past history and persona, this will be one of those weeks where it’s ALL about the performance. It’s sudden death time. Be bad or meh, and you are outta there.

Add meh with bad judges comments, and we are talking toast.

  • Stefunny

Well it’s Turn Off the TV week too and schools may be hyping that which means the younger demographic might not be watching either…

  • sexygirl

We are now hoping our favorites don’t win..Wow, AI have truly mess themselves up by trying to have it both ways. Now it seems the thinking is our favorite don’t need to win or should not even try to win. Let’s be realisitic, the handful of success stories who did not win AI does not make up for the many others from the top 24 since Season one who have not been heard from since they got eliminated. Or, is still hanging unto the AI spotlight for their fame.

I really doubt this year’s crop of singers will produce half the success of last years crew. What last years crew is doing is truly the exception to the rule. I have a feeling this season crop of singers will have to follow the previous rule of winner and runner-up cd release first then everyone elses.

Do you guys really believe that six singers from this season’s group can go on to sell anything over 100,000 cds like the Season Five crew will have done by the time Bucky’s cd hits it second week on the charts? Never mind the fact that Bucky, the sixth singer from Season Five to release a cd, might just join the other five before him and go gold?

Plus, if new people are going to watch, they would watch on Wednesday, when whomever they want to see, is on. And, even if they did tune in, I don’t know how many would actually vote. I’ve watched every season and so far only Bo and Taylor have made me pick up the phone.

    Go Team Indifference!!!

  • tinawina

Well ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Turn Off the TV week too and schools may be hyping that which means the younger demographic might not be watching eitherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

It is? Wow, that’s interesting. That would put contestants with youger-skewing fanbases in danger – Chris, Jordin and Blake. But Somehow, I can’t imagine the AI kiddie contingent missing out on the big charity thing! Can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

  • bean99

I don’t think that Chris Sligh will be in trouble for what he posted on his blog. It was informative but didn’t give away any secrets. I completely agreed with him about Ricky’s vote total spoilers because I’ve always felt it was only a select few who know them so why spoil to a 19 yr old that you know is going to post them online? I do think Ricky has some inside info but more about song choices and other various things.

I don’t think Blake will win but hope he’s in at least the top 4 or 3. I don’t have a real problem with Jordin or Melinda winning but wouldn’t buy their albums. I just want Blake to be able to record what he wants.

    Go Team Plaid (and vote)!

  • JJ

We are now hoping our favorites donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t win..Wow, AI have truly mess themselves up by trying to have it both ways. Now it seems the thinking is our favorite donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t need to win or should not even try to win. Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s be realisitic, the handful of success stories who did not win AI does not make up for the many others from the top 24 since Season one who have not been heard from since they got eliminated. Or, is still hanging unto the AI spotlight for their fame.

You have looks and brains. Damn, there must be something wrong with you.

Yeah, I’ll take a lunch break and go get my hair cut by Julia DeMato, maybe she will sing for me.

Sure they will. My kids won’t go anywhere near the TV. 1. They are giving awards out for whomever reads the most, and 2. It has been in the 80′s here, they woudl sleep outside, if I let them.

    Go Team Indifference!!!!

You may have a point about people watching. I was thinking more about casual viewers that non-AI fans, but I don’t know how much promotion has penetrated either group. But the voting… since the voting actually raises money (major coperations donating per number of votes recieved) I think they’ll get a lot more votes than usual. It’s a way to get money towards a good cause without actually having to come out of your pocket, and they are going to promote that to death during the show. People will vote just for that reason, even if they couldn’t care less about the actual contest.

Sure they will. My kids wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t go anywhere near the TV. 1. They are giving awards out for whomever reads the most, and 2. It has been in the 80à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s here, they woudl sleep outside, if I let them.

Do you guys really believe that six singers from this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s group can go on to sell anything over 100,000 cds like the Season Five crew will have done by the time Buckyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cd hits it second week on the charts? Never mind the fact that Bucky, the sixth singer from Season Five to release a cd, might just join the other five before him and go gold?

Six singers? Probably not. But a few may. As far as not wanting my favorite win? I wasn’t particularly wedded to the idea of Taylor winning last year either. I wrote this last March.

I’m nothing if not consistent. And, maybe a little prescient.

  • sexygirl

You guys really feel that Blake can go on to have Chris’s cd success if he does not win. I don’t think he can even reach Kat’s success if he does not finish in a decent enough spot to keep people interested in him after he gets booted? Chris Daughtry’s level of hype was three times more exciting at this stage of the game than Blake’s. Not only that but Chris was able to successfully morph his cd into an already familiar and popular music because his style of singing was very now and familiar sounding. Blake seems to be generating a bit of a buzz on the show because he is being pass off the singer with a unique style this season. There was nothing unique about Chris’s style of singing.

I personally doubt Blake will have the same level of success as Chris D. if he does not go on to win. As a matter of fact I don’t think he will have his level of cd success even if he did win. Blake is Pop all the way and not the long lasting kind either. Blake’s genre of music already have JT. Blake’s situation kind of reminds me a bit of Vanilla Ice. I really don’t know why.

  • JJ

OMG Who said that? LOL. Nobody said that, Sexy. All I’m saying is that he could get signed and has a shot. Which is all I ever predicted for any of these kids. Hindsight is 20/20 you know? We’ll see what happens.

I don’t think these kids are losers. Melinda, Blake, Jordin all have a decent shot at having respectable careers, imho. So does Chris R, if he finds the right people to promote him in the right way, and even Phil if he sticks to country. LaKisha could do very well in gospel, or do the dance-club/big voiced diva thing.

Like I said, time will tell.

  • pj

Who claimed Blake was going to have Daugtry’s level of success? I must have missed that. Certianly, that would be a wild prediction at this point.

I do think he could put out a successful album. I guess it depends on what direction he takes. I don’t see him doing anything remotely like Timberlake, but that’s just me. :)

  • pj

Oh, and I will wait for as long as it takes to buy a Blake CD. I’m an Ace fan. I am used to being veeeeeerry patient. :)

  • tinawina

Damn sexy, tell us how you really feel? LMAO.

I agree he’s not going to be a Daughtry level seller. I could see him going platinum though. To me he’s not really Timberlake like (that’s WAY more Chris R) but more of a indie-british-band-singing-earnest-love songs-and-catchy-midtempo rockish type. He has more in common with Sligh than with Chris R.

But I absolutely agree he needs to last as far as he can in this contest. He needs to gain as many fans as possible.

  • sexygirl

    Six singers? Probably not.

And your right. What last year’s crew is doing will be very hard to match. Think about it, six singers from last season, within the last seven months, have dropped what any record company would call successful cds. No other season of AI has ever produced six singers from it’s top ten that has gone on to do what last year’s crew is doing. The most I can remember before that was the top four from Season Two and I don’t know if all four cds made gold. I have a feeling that Buck will go gold before this years is out. And if he has a single that takes off, well you’ll never know. We also cannot leave out Mandisa and Paris. If they go on to have any kind of cd success that would be eight from the TOP TEN of one season.

    But a few may

MJ, I don’t even think a few. And the reason is, they are too much alike. Seriously, outside of maybe the first and second place finisher, the only person who I think can go on a have a decent career after hearing him sing country last week, is Phil. If any of the others finish anywhere outside of the top three, they will be long forgotten before the show ends. We are still talking about Mandisa and Paris more than Haley who was let go two weeks ago..

  • madaboutu

On the success or not of this years group. I think it is hard to say which can sell, it so depends on what the public wants. It seems now that AI is a genre in itself. Other artist vs AI artists. Yesterday I went to reminisce at the archives that Gray had put back up. I listened to the MP3′s of Taylors performances and there was one group number of Take It Easy. I realized that is when Chris stopped being one of my favorites. His voice was so screechy that it hurt….and……the rest weren’t that great either, including Taylor. I suppose that was about the time that performance and personality entered into it for me. It is always good to go back, like on the vids, because I can see where Taylor was really good vocally, but some people only saw the outward things.

Okay, maybe I’m being a bit much by putting Blake up against Chris but who would you put him up against in cd sales if he was be dismissed this week? I think Chris R could outsell Blake because he more fits the JT mold than Blake. Heck, even Sanjaya could outsell Blake.

I personally think Blake either needs to win or come in second to have any kind of success. If am wrong, I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong. If he gets eliminated Wednesday and go on to sell more cds than Kat, I will be the first to apologize..LOL

  • sexygirl

Okay, I off to do my workout. But I want to say that I do feel for this years contestants. There isn’t any real interest generated around them to really keep you wanting to talk about them after they get eliminated. That is why I’m saying that out of all the past seasons contestants, this season will go down as the most forgettable as far as the interest in the contestants. It’s not these contestants fault. It’s the fault of AI. It seems as if they decided that they want this season to be more about the show and less about the contestants. Maybe we can name all of the top twenty-four of this season but who has really stolen the spotlight..Sanjaya?

I think Chris R could outsell Blake because he more fits the JT mold than Blake.

I don’t disagree with you about this. I think that ChrisR could easily be molded into a JT type and given the right production could sell a lot of records.

I don’t see Blake fitting as neatly into a prefabricated mold as Chris R. That being said, he’ll probably put out a way more interesting album that I will be proud to go out and buy.

Also, if this is any indication of marketability, the songs Blake sings consistently move up the iTunes singles charts… way more so than any of the other contestants. Chris D’s did too, last year. So, yeah, there’s a Chris D/Blake comparison for ya.

ETA: I’ll just be happy if he can make a living doing what he loves. Anything above that is gravy :)

A lemming is a type of animal that when one has the feeling to dive off a cliff they all do. I on the other hand feel that Taylor sounds like many artists. Are they current today? No. But I hardly think he’s unique. Taylor might want to travel with LiMBO because of the feeling he gets when he performs with them. Even if all the musicians around you have collectively been playing for over 100 years, it still doesn’t matter if all you’re doing is just playing notes and not necessairly feeling the song and the grove.

Daughtry sounds like Creed or Live ( my buddy ( who does not watch Idol ) in fact first thought LIVE came back with a single after hearing INO on the radio ).

Kat Mcphee in her current album sounds like Fergie or Nellie Furtado.

Jordin Sparks in fact looks and sounds like Kimberly Locke.

    etc. etc. etc.

  • JJ

Not tonality wise, but just the way he pronounces things. Carbon copy.

Wow, Radname is cool today, all these Taylor compliments. To think, most people thought Sam Cooke was one of a kind, now he is two, him and Taylor.

  • NOLA

JJ, I wish all mothers were as great as you!

I like a little bit of beatboxing to compliment a song… not the whole song.

Ninergirl who went to the rehearsals said EVERONE was good last night. She said she was mesmorized by Blake and that he got good lighting! She thought the song was perfect for him. :)

  • calimari

I think Taylor also sounds like Bob Seger. When I saw Seger in concert in December, practically every song I wanted to hear Taylor do. And he did Main Street the other night for the encore – sounded really good. No, not just like Seger, but they both have that sort of gravelly quality to their voices. For me, Taylor’s songs really do touch me – especially the originals. But they won’t touch everyone. Just like some might really be touched by a song from Daughtry – they didn’t hit me in that same way. But nobody likes everybody, right? I mean, I read that some folks don’t like the Beatles, and that’s just dumbfounding to me.

  • Little Boy Blue

Are you related to Simon?..He said Taylor was a background singer too..

One difference… Simon said he was wrong after LEVON.

  • db

I had no clue until a few weeks ago that “A Change Is Gonna Come” is my father’s favorite song. I’m somewhat curious what he would think about the snippet Taylor sang during his audition. Anyways, Aretha Franklin covered the song quite well also; you can hear it over at Soul Sides.

Speaking of that song, during the audition rounds, I noticed quite a few people (ok, three or four) singing that for their audition. In previous years, had that song popped up as frequently during auditions, or did people get the idea from Taylor’s audition??

Oh, and I just wanted to add how odd it is to have a coronation song being sung in the competition.

She will automatically be compared to Fantasia.

Exactly. And drawing such comparisons to yourself and an Idol winner can’t be a good thing, especially in a competition where at this point, you want to set yourself apart and not just be know as Fantasia v2.0.

Kat doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sound anything like Fergie or Nelly?

Maybe a bit like Fergie – and that’s even pushing it – but not Nelly F. In all honesty – and I’m not going for a smackdown of *** or anything like that – but if I wasn’t somewhat familiar with “Open Toes,” if I heard it on the radio, I’d not be able to say, “Hey, that’s Kat McPhee from AI.” To me, there is no single quality to her voice that would cause it to stand out, especially on radio.

I remember – I think an interview w/ Ryan – where he mentions that if they don’t have clearance for a song someone sings in audition, they can’t show their audition. But I don’t know if Change is Gonna Come is under copyright or not. Not sure how old the song is…

David Brown is from what season??

He was from Season 5 ( Carrie Underwood’s year ). Considered an early fav. Made the top 24 until he was eliminated after 2 weeks ( didn’t show much personality or confidence in himself ).

He did Stevie Wonder’s ALL IS FAIR IN LOVE ( a killer song that no one has done justice to, not even Kat Mcphee ) and NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE. ( Jackson 5 ).

  • NOLA

db, David Brown was from New Orleans. He was absolutely adorable. He was from Season 3. Cute little African American with a gorgeous smile and he blew the judges away with his audition; but kept choosing sucky songs afterwards. He was the one who they pimped

If LaKisha, Fantasia, and other AI contestants in the “diva” mold share the same niche, then there’s bound to be some overlap in song choices. However, we’re talking about the actual coronation song. Maybe LaKisha will do well, but the fact she’ll be sining a song which was instrumental in Fantasia’s AI3 win, then yeah, you’re going to get some comparisons. And at the rate LaKisha has been plummeting, those comparisons are more likely to be unfavorable…

Im about as excited for the Idol Give Back as I used to be when my mother made liver and onions for dinner.

I hear you, WVFan. I only want to see who’s in the bottom 3 tomorrow night and who’s ultimately going home. Outside of that, I am disgusted at AI’s attempt at pretending “they” care about the starving children – as if TPTB is pulling the wool over regular AI viewers’ eyes and we don’t see the stunt for what it is. Big WOO! It’s all about ratings and whatever it takes to get them. Whatever It Takes To Get Higher Ratings Cause It’s Sure Not About The Idols Anymore.

I don’t talk about AI outside of ‘here’; none of my friends or family, as far as I know, have any interest whatsoever in American Idol, and though I’ve watched every year since AI2 and had favorites, the only time I’ve ever voted was last year. Even then I didn’t start voting for Taylor in the first several shows, though I knew from his audition he was the one to watch, and it was exciting to know that my favorite was also the choice of the majority every week! YAY! That never happens often!

  • JJ

coronation song sung 3 years ago

But if you have people, like me, who have watched every season, then you would remember it. I’m not a big fan of Carrie, I’ve heard her CD, but I am not impressed. The coronation song is always associated with AI. So, I think it is a bigger mistake. Many people watch the show, but don’t buy CD’s. The only CD I’ve ever purchased, for myself, is Taylors. I bought Carrie’s and Kellie’s for my daughters, and I will admit, I like Kellie’s alot better. So do my girls.

  • Kirsten

But I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if Change is Gonna Come is under copyright or not.

Copyright extends to 70 years after the death of the author. Sam Cooke died in 1964 and the song was released on a posthumous album. So, I guess it will be copyrighted until 2044 (one of Sony Bono’s most famous acts as a politician was to extend the length of copyrights).

So, the only songs that they could sing that would be in the public domain would be songs written by people who died before 1937.

ETA: “It was released in December 1964, right after Sam Cooke was shot to death, justifiable homicide.”

    I did not know that.

I wonder if they’ll mention Season 1′s Tamyra Gray… SHE WROTE THE SONG !!

I bet Chris Sligh could compete in the songwriting contest and come up with something great like his song IN A MOMENT ( which I agree with MJ when she said it sounds like a good coronation song ). Just wondering aloud !

I can’t imagine Clive prefering Chris over Blake, I mean come onA. Night and Day.
All of Blake’s performance except maybe one have been great. He has been very consistent throughout this competition.
I really enjoyed his TIme of The Season and he was amazing on Latin Night. Jlo brought the best on him.

I am actually looking forward toto his take on Imagine.
I love Blake when beatboxes and when he doesn’t. I love all of his artistry. I think he is a unique artist with a current sound perfect to fit Top 40 stations.
I hope tonight goes well for him, I am really praying for him tonight. Even if Randy did not like it much Simon was impressed with his emotion. I think that is quite a complement.

I on the other hand love Carrie, and have bought her cd (and i suppose so have 5 million other people)I think she will get the “well Fantasias was better” comments, but she got those last week as well. In fact i’m fairly certain that every week atleast one of the idols has gotten a “well this previous idol did it better” yet they still continue to compete.

Here’s info my friend sent me …

This is from someone who went to the dress rehearsal taping:

First up was Chris with “If I Could Change The World” by Eric Clapton. I’m not a huge fan of Chris, but I thought he did a wonderful job of the song. He didn’t sound at all nasal and gave a very good performance.

Next up was Melinda with Faith Hills’ “There Will Come A Day”. Wow! This girl is even better in person!

Third was Blake with “Imagine” by John Lennon with piano accompaniment. I thought he was a wee bit off on one of the transitions to falsetto, but on the whole another very good vocal and performance.

Fourth was LaKisha with “I Believe” by Fantasia. I know a lot of people are probably groaning because she is performing another song by a previous Idol, but let me tell you. She was absolutely wonderful! A beautiful, moving performance.

Next up was Phil with “The Change” by Garth Brooks. Phil also sounds wonderful live. His vocals were nearly impeccable – powerful and moving.

Lastly, Jordin performed “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. Not sure whose version. I thought the beginning was a little off – perhaps a little too low for her to sing comfortably – and her transitions in spots were a little off. I could be way off base, but she didn’t seem comfortable with her clothes and that may have thrown her off a bit. She finished very strong, however.

Apolo Anton Ohno is the most adorable human on the planet.

I am loving Apolo, and his partner, this year – they are both adorable!

There really are several this year that I enjoy watching; I love the show! I really, really had hoped for Clyde Drexler to surprise us and actually pretend to DANCE (cause I loved him in the NBA), but it just never happened. Ian had promise at first, but my problem is (ahem! call me Simon), it’s not just about the dancing, and if he had a different partner I might be pulling for him more than I am, but Cheryl Burke has won the last two years in a row, and it’s time for someone else to take the trophy!

I think Leila Ali is really, really good! and her partner, Max, is the best professional male dancer, to me – but Apolo is going to be very hard to beat! Top 3 predictions: Apolo, Joey, Leila. :)

LBB re Clyde the Glide ~

His glide was the smoothest thing when he was going for the basket – like he was actually floating in the air – but on the dance floor, all his moves were the same, and he “might” have looked better if he had a tall partner, because he always seemed to be stooped over her. But at any rate, he really was the worst one on the floor.

  • sexygirl

Not too well, it seems, but I always felt he needed to win to ever go anywhere with the career he wanted to have.

I did not feel Taylor needed to win to have some type of a successful career in the commercial music world. I personally feel that was a lot of the continual negative hype created by AI. The fact that a lot more fans and critics alike seems to like the pre-Taylor stuff more than what’s on this “over-produced” cd means Taylor would have been able to cave out some type of successful career. Even if he went with a independent label. Now, the question would be, how long would it have taken Taylor to drop his cd.

Also, if the eighth place finisher from last season could pull in close 70,000 in cd sales with his fanbase his firts week, then I feel Taylor who definitely had a stronger fanbase, would have pulled in more.

I also want to add, as far as any of this year’s contestants are concerned that all of them will have to be molded to fit into today’s music no matter which one wins. What I see happening is TPTB is trying to convince us that Chris and Blake will automatically fit but I don’t see it. Especially since neither of them have managed to creat a real strong buzz around them.

I just youtubed Fantasia’s I Believe, and even if the girl is not your cup of tea, she brought it that night, finals night, there was not a dry eye when the panned to the audience that night. Sanjaya owned the buzz outside of the internet forums. This week will be quite telling because whoever manages to get the buzz this week, might be able to hold it until the end. This will be a good night to have a stand-out performance.

Melinda has often been mentioned in articles as a front-runner. This could be what people end up talking about. She gives another solid performance tonight.

Chris got a lot of press from last week’s dust up and he starts off the show, so the press may chose to focus on that (Simon/Chris makes friends, Chris much improved, etc)

Lakisha is said to have put on a good performance, but been bashed by the judges. The press may focus on this new controversy.

Jordin goes last and it gets called the “best performance in Idol history”. That could be the feel good headlines.

Blake and Phil probably don’t stand a chance of being this week’s story.

    A friend just sent me this & I thought I’d share -
Some of the artists of the 60′s are revising their music hits with new lyrics to accommodate baby boomers this time in their golden years.

    They include:

Herman’s Hermits – Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Walker

The Bee Gees – How Can You Mend a Broken Hip.

Bobby Darin – Splish, Splash, I Was Havin’ a Flash.

Ringo Starr – I Get By With a Little Help From Depends.

Roberta Flack – The First Time Ever I Forgot Your Face.

Johnny Nash – I Can’t See Clearly Now.

Paul Simon – Fifty Ways to Lose Your Liver.

The Commodores – Once, Twice, Three Times to the Bathroom.

Marvin Gaye – Heard It Through the Grape Nuts.

Leo Sayer – You Make Me Feel Like Napping.

The Temptations – Papa’s Got a Kidney Stone.

    Abba – Denture Queen.

Tony Orlando – Knock 3 Times On The Ceiling If You Hear Me Fall.

Helen Reddy – I Am Woman, Hear Me Snore.

Willie Nelson – On the Commode Again!!!

i love Apollo, but i find Joey to be the most entertaining/best dancer bar none. However, given the fact that he spent his whole life dancing in plays and with N’Sync, he definitely has the upper hand.

    re:AI

Blake and Melinda are definitely two of the most consistent contestants. I think Melinda has the best voice this season, but her performances bore me to tears. I really don’t like the songs she picks. She sings them well, I just don’t enjoy them. I think i’m the only one.

Would Paula Abdul qualify as a celebrity contestant ?

LBB, considering she used to be a professional dancer and choreographer, I don’t think she would qualify. Of course, it wasn’t ballroom, so who knows?

I found this bit of the interview with Kelly Clarkson in EW to be quite interesting:

Reporter: I heard you tell someone here a little bit earlier that your record company might have preferred another single going out first, something that was a little bit safer.

Kelly: Oh, no. They just didn’t prefer the album, really, at all. They don’t like me writing a whole lot, just to be honest with you. Not even after I’ve written No. 1 [songs]. So, yeah, they’re not big into that. But they’re coming around, and they like it now, and obviously it’s doing well on radio right now, so they’re liking it even more. And taking credit!

Even after two hit albums and awards for her songwriting, she had to fight tooth and nail with RCA to get to make the album that she wanted (she talks more about it in the interview). She mentions having to get help from her lawyer to get to do what she wanted on Breakaway.

You’re definitely not the only one. I do agree that Melinda has a great voice, but yeah, totally boring to me.

But I do love Blake. He is consistently good. He has a great voice, great stage presence, and he consistently picks the right song and brings something special to it. I am super excited to hear him sing Imagine tonight. I know he is going to blow me away. :)

  • madaboutu

B……….I agree about Joey. Apollo is great too. I also like Laila, but feel those two guys really are the best dancers. If Melinda is the best singer, which I will agree on, and doesn’t win, then the show will once again prove it isn’t about the best singer, and will no longer have to pretend.

Melinda is without a doubt top-notch. The downfall with her on Idol is I think she peaked too early (My Funny Valentine).

Also she is already a true singer, with very little room to really grow or improve. She has deprived us of one reason some of us may watch the show – to see a so-so talent morph into a true star as we wait each week to see what new trick they’ve learned. Melinda can’t give us that.

Since Tamyra Gray wrote the song that was Fantasiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hit single, I wonder how much royalty she got from ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

At last report (USA Today), “I Believe” — the single — had sold 409,000 copies, although it is not clear how many were digital downloads versus CDs. It matters because the songwriters earn mechanical royalties on CDs, whereas performers earn royalties for digital downloads.

For simplicity’s sake, let’s assume that all 409k were CD singles, giving us a best-case scenario for Tamyra as a songwriter.

Tamyra was a co-writer of the song, with Samuel J. Watters and Louis John Biancaniello. In 2004, when “I Believe” was released, the statutory mechanical royalty rate for the songwriter(s) was $0.04 for a song less than 5 minutes in length, which would be divided by three, so Tamyra would have earned $0.0133 per single sold: 409,000 x $0.0133 = $5439.70.

The song was also included on Fantasia’s album, “Free Yourself,” which at last report had sold 1,687,346 copies. The mechanical royalty rate is the same for albums, so: 1,687,346 x $0.0133 = $22,441.70.

Tamyra, as a songwriter, is also entitled to collect performance royalties — for example, when Fantasia sang “I Believe” on AI or during the summer concert tour — as well as any synchronization or print royalties.

  • Metta

It was released in December 1964, right after Sam Cooke was shot to death, justifiable homicide. He supposedly raped a girl and he was shot by a hotel clerk.

    JJ misspeaks (again!):

    From Wikipedia

Cooke died at the age of 33 under mysterious circumstances on December 11, 1964 in Los Angeles, California. Though the details of the case are still in dispute, the official story was that he was shot to death by Bertha Franklin, manager of the Hacienda Motel in South Los Angeles, who claimed that he had threatened her, and that she killed him in self-defense. The verdict was justifiable homicide, though many believe that crucial details did not come out in court, or were buried afterward.

Thanks for your info. I knew we could count on you to give us music industry details.

    Regarding this :

Sam Watters is her husband. Would that mean that this husband and wife get DOUBLE the amount you estimate as co-writers of the song ?

Kelly has a very beneficial stubborn streak. Actually, it seems that if you’re not a bit stubborn in the music biz, you’ll get screwed 8 times out of 10.

    Good for her. :)

However, that being said, the dress she wore that evening was fug.

I think Tamyra married Sam in September 2006, at which point the majority of the mechanical royalties each had earned for “I Believe” had probably already been paid, but from that point forward, they would collect two-thirds of the songwriters’ royalties as husband and wife.

    re: kelly/RCA

I can’t blame RCA for any creative control they tried to exert on Kelly’s album. She’s undoubtedly one of their biggest artists at the moment and they would be stupid if they essentially said, “here’s some money, go make an album.”

artists are always wanting to experiment and change up their sound a bit. the labels just want quality material that’s commercially viable.

at the end of the day, if the material is good, the label will probably come around. I’ve heard of plenty of recent artists talk about how they’ve had to essentially “pitch” albums to their labels even after selling millions and millions of cds.

    ETA Essay alert
Gross, why is Avril Lavigne #1? She’s such an arrogant little girl that doesn’t realize wearing little pink skulls on your shirt does not make you cool and should be left back in the 8th grade. Not on a 22 year old married woman. She’s a decently talented bitch with absolutely no sense of humor, about herself, or anyone.
On to season 6. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal that the ratings aren’t as monsterous as last year. I mean, how could they be? Last year was insane, it was the very peak of AI and really, there is only one way to go from the top. Of course it’s not failing. I’ll give that a few more years. But I think that making a television show is a very egotistical process. Just like with the contestants, who mostly aren’t looking forward to their careers in the future and are just focused on making it through the next round, the powers that be aren’t sitting around wondering how they’re going to spice it up next year. And since season 5 had the monstor ratings, and it being beaten into our brains that it was the BEST SEASON EVER, the only thing they did was put stairs on that mountain. And they went to the top. They contributed a lot, and now that its sinking they feel they have to answer for themselves when in reality, they don’t need to do shit. Because they’re still #1 but they’re not better than before. Does that make sense? Probably not.
Also, last year was great because everyone was extremely different and the cast being so diverse brought in a lot of viewers. This year, it’s kinda like alright you want a diva with a huge voice? Well we’ve got 3. Plus the season is laden with controversy and talent always takes a backseat to scandal. But this always happens with everything. Nothing can be amazing forever. Like if you go to your friends party and had the best time of your life, you think if you go back and have another party it will be the same, or as good? Probably not. It’s the way the world works.

  • beesims

Bucky in the top 10–sweet! I am tickled pink to know that the dark horse that I backed way back in February of ’06 is now a full fledged country recording artist. I am biased, of course, but I think this CD has the potential to yield several great singles—”American Friday Night”, “Between the Bible and the Belt”, “I’m Good” and my personal favorite “I’ll Walk”. I was prepared to detest the later because I hate songs that go for “anvil on the head” tear jerking about cancer, angel babies in the arms of jesus and in this case, car crashes and wheelchairs, but Bucky’s raspy, plaintive vocals and the lovely melodic hook just reduces me to a pool of jello.

Ah, the price of fame–being chased down the housewares aisle of Walmart!

Surely everyone in the USA must have a Carrie or Daughtry album by now

{{{Raises hand}}} Not me….. or did you mean just those that want one? :)

  • sexygirl

Oh, they would be, if its who I think you are talking about. If it is, she thanked Taylor on Friday night, about what 10,000 times.

JJ, I would thank him too if he invited me to play at The Beacon Theater.. Wait a minute, I thought Taylor like them TALL..LOL

  • madaboutu

Thinking of tours and such, well, I am anyway, I looked at the link to Josh? Hogue is it, that someone posted, who will be touring with Elliott, and had to laugh because he is telling people that Jack Daniels will be along on the tour, and shows a bottle of it. Can’t guys think of anything else to do but drink and watch sports? I know the beer flowed on the AI bus.

  • emeralgem

Ok y’all seriously, that is just my wishful thinking..
Don’t know who he was talking about in that interview and it is none of my business..He’s a man grown and can manage his relationships w/o my help..

  • JJ

JJ, I would thank him too if he invited me to play at The Beacon Theater.. Wait a minute, I thought Taylor like them TALL..LOL

But she is too freakin’ cute, that might have overcome the lack of stature.

  • JJ

Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t guys think of anything else to do but drink and watch sports?

    sex

  • madaboutu

JJ………..well, sex is just embedded so they have to just think around it and fill in the empty spots. LOL
As for the stature thing above………at this point I would say, if there’s a spark there’s a spark. I had a picture of Tom Cruise on the couch and that ending at the Beacon. LOL (I am just sitting here waiting for reports on the show from you east coasters, and for the cellcert to start. It isn’t even dinner time here yet)

  • emeralgem

Taylor has a girlfriend. Think sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll set up a myspace like Elliottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s gf. If she does, get the hospital emergency rooms ready.

    Is that Elliott’s girlfriend?

  • madaboutu

    Jeez! Nice way to pose!

Is Phil the only one of the remaining idols married?

I hate people cursing at me or taking everything I say so personal..

It’s just when I ask people to follow simple guidelines, and then they don’t… I feel like this… :wallbash_tb:

The fan war carp has been ratcheted up a couple of notches these last few days, and I feel very frustrated right now. When I ask nicely, it still does not stop.

A couple of things (and this is not directed just at you, Sexygirl):

If one is dishing it out…one should be able to take it.

Allowing others their opinions without getting defensive is also key.

The answer to somebody dissing your favorite Idol is not to diss their favorite Idol. (Jeebus, this one makes me crazy)

If a particular poster pushes your buttons, I suggest just skipping over their posts without reading them, rather than answering them with something that will start an argument.

  • radname

I’m really excited for AI tonight, i think it’s because i really want to see jordins take on you’ll never walk alone

  • jpfan

    Yes. That’s Elliott’s gf.

  • calimari

Personally, I’d love it if Taylor found someone special. I’d like to hear what sort of music he’d write as a result. And when I checked out Toby L’s myspace & web site, I was thinking I wouldn’t mind if she clicked w/ him. But I’m selfish. I’d love a good love song out of Taylor.

  • mississippigirl

calimari…how did your sister like the concert?

  • Metta

I did not misspeak. The clerk shot him because he kept looking for the girl that he raped, she ran out.

Ahem, hate to sound like a lawyer here, but Sam Cooke was never convicted of rape. Even if, for the sake of argument, I defer to the validity of your source, he was accused of it by a third party (who was not even a witness). I like to be cautious about these sorts of things. Okay, maybe the caution is a libra thing, not a lawyer thing.

  • JJ

Ahem, hate to sound like a lawyer here, but Sam Cooke was never convicted of rape.

Last I looked, dead men can’t stand trial.

  • Metta

The Taylor Crazies are all SAD about this news!!

Really? Where have you seen this reaction? I’ve only seen a couple of comments on the Tay sites about this aspect of that OK article–and most people find it funny, placing it alongside the mythical airplane woman.

  • Metta

Last I looked, dead men canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t stand trial.

Precisely, my dear. Means they can’t be either acquitted OR found guilty. Don’t make me knock you upside the head with my evidence texts!

  • hapi

Being an old buzzard, I was around during Sam Cooke’s heyday and when the news stories were out with all that. It was believed by as many that he was “set up”. The witness etc were not exactly reliable characters. So no one for sure knows the true story, but I hate to see accusations stated as facts when they were extremely questionable at the time. There were other articles, explanations so one has to be careful in digging up these as they are not the whole picture.

  • Metta

hapi – Don’t mind JJ. She’s still a little punch-drunk from our dustup at The Beacon. The occupational therapists have prioritized re-teaching mastery of her microwave. Separating fact from fiction will come later. She always had trouble with that anyway.

  • Metta

Sexygirl – Go over to the Boogie. There’s a new Pictures From The Beacon thread where the photog must have been sitting right behind us. You can see our hands in several of the photos. It’s a hoot!

I actually feel bad – my alien hands ruin her pix – lol

  • madaboutu

Report I see so far. Blake did a good job, Lakisha not so great. Is that about right?

  • madaboutu

    Everyone in chat?

  • weelassie

This is my opinion, and only that, but how did Chris make it even to the top 24???? Do the judges not really hear that he cannot sing? Maybe it is just me but his voice is terrible to me. My cat doesn’t think he can sing either. He seems like a nice guy but a singer, not so much.

  • RollTide

Blake sang beautifully. I think he did an awesome job. I can’t wait to get the download. :) I’m warming up my fingers now to dial for him. Blake will not be in the bottom 3 tomorrow if I can help it.

    Go Team Plaid!!

  • weelassie

Blake did a really nice job:) Go Team Plaid. Melinda was awesome too. Go Team Humble. I’m a fan of Team Humble Plaid!!!!

It’s not just you. My daughters said that his smile melts their heart. I told them it’s not a smiling competition.

  • weelassie

    Cathy,
LOL. His smile doesn’t really do anything for me either. On the other hand, I thought Blake looked really handsome tonight.

  • emeralgem

Sorry, but I do NOT think Jordin’s performance was the BEST ever on IDOL.

  • Cathy

I think Randy said Jordin was ONE of the best, not THE best. I still think he overpraised her though.

  • Ladybug

Sorry, but I do NOT think Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s performance was the BEST ever on IDOL.

I think Randy said Jordin was ONE of the best, not THE best. I still think he overpraised her though.

I think he did say one of the best. I agree with you emeralgem, though. That was nowhere near a top ten from all the seasons. It was very good, but not THAT special.

Have stepped away, briefly, from Team Indifference, to send a few votes because Second Harvest is one of the recipients. A good organization.

I am sure I will rejoin the ranks next week as the show resumes its glacial pace towards the finale. (Yawn)

  • shar

Sometimes Ryan can be a nerd and get on my last nerve, but I really think his interaction with the children in Africa and here was extremely cool, you can tell those kids really like Ryan. Hats of to Ryan tonight!

I don’t know what the judges were hearing but I loved Blake and Lakisha. Blake was very sweet and understated like the song itself and Lakisha hit every note and put lots of emotion in that song. To me, it was a tribute to Fantasia, not an ego thing like many were trying to infer. It does make sense that the success of another single mother, female, African American WOULD inspire her.

  • longsong

I am sure I will rejoin the ranks next week as the show resumes its glacial pace towards the finale. (Yawn)

    “Glacial pace”. Good term! :happy_tb:

  • radname

LaKisha did not hit every note, especially in the beginning. But that being sad i still think she turned out a good performance. I really enjoyed all the performances even Chris’ a little bit, although i still think he should go home. Jordin’s vocal was amazing because she felt the lyrics, during the last part of the song i could see her trying not to cry and we all know what that does to your voice and she just kept on going through.

  • emeralgem

I think Randy said Jordin was ONE of the best, not THE best. I still think he overpraised her though.

    ————————–
Thank you for correcting me, and I think he overpraised her too..

  • madaboutu

emeraldgem………..Tay killin em in Columbus tonite. Much crowd interaction it sounds like. ( Sounds like AI is pretty good tonite. I still have almost an hour.)

  • PamsterAtl

TTA – Jordin sang well – but it was no way THAT GOOD. In fact, even though I really like her and hope she is in the final 3 – that was not the best song of the season or AI at all but was a bit pitchy and shouty…. Perhaps the crowd noise affected Randy’s hearing of it. Melinda sang much better than any of the others tonight.

Hey – voting again —- but only for charity!

  • radname

vote Jordin! or Blake..they’re really the only ones i care about, hopefully tomorrow they declare them both safe so i don’t have to sit there the rest of the night. I didn’t Jordin was at all shouting. Was her pitch off at times? Probably. I think she did a really good version of the song, i was waiting to see her take on it since i’m a huge fan of the elvis presley version but i really loved her version.

  • PamsterAtl

Okay, I have officially voted for everyone I want to see go on next week…. which is everyone except Lakisha. Have I voted enough in the last hour to satisfy the obligation to the hungry children? Sigh. I don’t care enough this year to put this much effort into voting — and it’s the first year I have felt this way.

I have my ticket to go see Elliott on 5-15 and I am thrilled about him. I don’t really like anyone this year…. Melinda is good others just okay.

  • platinumgray

Taylor might not be on Idol finale after all why??
everybody who watch idol did you see the Intro of the opening of idol..well there are all the idols going to the top of the tower except one..taylor’s his face was replaced by the american idol logo

i guess we will not see taylor on the finale….just taking a wild guess

  • sexygirl

I saw those pictures. We now have famous hands..LOL

  • madaboutu

platinumgray…………..I do think that Taylor will be on the finale, I think he has said he will, and I think even Nigel said it. However, if he isn’t, I no longer care. They have chosen to ignore him and Rueben both. Taylor will be the reigning champ for only a couple of more weeks anyway.

  • patay

    platinumgray,
Well, that just makes me sick!!!

  • Little Boy Blue

Taylor Hicks will be at AI at least once and most likely the finale because :

    1) He said so in an interview.

    2) The finale is the only time his schedule permits.

    3) He’s contractually obligated to appear.

This might be a bad example but it would be like last year’s Miss America being contractually obligated to appear for this year’s crowning of Miss America.

    Side note :
Looks like his Columbus concert was sold out tonight ( venue : 2,200 ).

  • pj

Taylor is sooo last year. Get with the program. ;)

ETA: I mean that in the nicest possible way.

  • WVFan

I thought jordin was good but no where near one of the best ever on Idol. Lakisha was ok but she did it exactly like fantasia but not as good, imo. Blake was ok but the song wsa very low key for the ones the others all sang. Melinda was good, Phil sounded good but he didnt connect with it, for me. I still dont like Chris voice.

  • madaboutu

Though I like Jordin, she was sharp nearly for the whole song. I don’t know what the judges were talking about.

  • WVFan

Re. buckys record. Just read the posts about it. I love it but dont like the songs the others on here say they love. Lol. It Aint No Thing and Hometown are my favs.

  • cricket

    I thought that they were all pretty good tonight. My personal order would be ;
    1. Melinda ( in a class of her own)
    2. Phil ( great voice sang with passion )
    3. Jordin ( good performance , a little screaming in places )
    4. Chris ( solid performance , very pleasant)
    5. Blake ( good performance , just didn’t feel it )
    6. Lakisha ( good performance , just doesn’t connect with me )

  • Former_AI_Junkie

This night for me was one of the worst AI nights ever- and not in a good way.

It’s so obvious TPTB want Jordin to win. They probably think she might be able to somehow salvage this season by selling a decent amount of records if she gets the winner’s pimpage.

And Blake deserves to go home after butchering Imagine like that. Not that he will, mind you. There seem to be enough people around who ignore the fact he can barely sing and is five feet tall. And it also seems he’s gained weight during the competition, which to my recollection is a first for Idol. Maybe Chris likes it that way- more to grab onto, I guess…

Oh, and here’s how one should sing “Imagine” on a stupid reality show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn8DRvYdsow

  • maracaibo

Blake did an AMAZING job with IMAGINE>> It was very very good he did it justice.
Go listen to his mp3 over at rickey’s. I was really impressed. GO BLAKE!

  • Tracy

Hey all! Just catching up a bit. Good for Bucky on having his album debut in the top five. Tonight’s show was just ‘meh’ for me, but I did throw in a few votes because the money is going to a couple good causes.

In sadder news, my aunt passed away this morning. It hurts like hell, but I do take some comfort in knowing that she’s no longer in pain.

  • http://www.myspace.com/mignonette33 purplesmile

    (((Tracy))))

I’m sorry to hear about your aunt. But as you said, she is more comfortable where she is now. My prayers to you and your family.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Blake did an AMAZING job with IMAGINE>> It was very very good he did it justice.

I completely disagree. He butchered it. Please ask someone with musical knowledge to listen to his vocal and tell you how off-key and (most notably) out of his range he was. This isn’t an opinion, this is a fact, and I would bet my life’s earnings on it. It was an AWFUL rendition, the kind I wouldn’t even clap along to in a karaoke bar.

And what’s with the fake British accent? Pathetic. I guess it goes along with the “hip grandpa” attire.

The bar was raised for him on that song and he came up short (ha).

  • emeralgem

Who claps along to a song like Imagine in the first place? I agree Blake did NOT do a very good jobe.. He totally slaughtered one note in the song..
