This is sad news.

A truck driver carrying staging equipment for Carrie Underwood’s concert at Foxwoods Casino, in Connecticut tonight, plunged off Interstate 95 northbound near exit 91, and burst into flames. The driver was killed in the fire:

State police say the crash happened around 8 a.m. on Saturday. It shut down I-95 northbound for hours as the state Department of Transportation and local fire departments assessed the damage to the overpass.

As of 2 p.m. one northbound lane was open. Police estimated that the highway won’t be clear until after 7 p.m. Traffic signs have been placed to reroute motorists.

State police said the driver of the truck was burned so badly that dental records would need to be used to confirm the driver’s identity. No other people or vehicles were involved in the crash.

A Foxwoods representative said Carrie’s concert would go on as planned.

That is just horrible. I have nothing but deepest sympathy for the family. I’m very sorry for their loss.

Ecohing Pm’s words. That is such a horrible way to die. A similar accident happened near my house several years back, due to the fuel in the tank exploding.

  • BootStar

How horrible. I guess Jesus didn’t take the wheel on that one.

MJ, can you link to the source of the story? I’m not seeing it.

Wow, that is so sad. My sympathies go out to the family.

  • larc

I hope the driver was either killed or knocked out by the crash and was never aware of the fire.

Carrie will say something about this at the show tonight.

I bet she will. I would imagine she’s pretty upset about this.

What a tragedy :( My thoughts and prayers are with the driver’s family and friends.

I saw a tweet that Carrie cried when she sang Temporary Home tonight. It’s probably reliable but I’m not posting the tweet since it hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Edit: I’m hearing the same thing from a few people. This day has got to have been very hard on the people whose lives this driver touched.

    From Facebook:

Carrie Underwood confirmed one of her truck drivers was killed today. she sang “temporary home” in his honor, broke down crying. Audience helped her sing & gave standing ovation. ? Then she sang “Jesus Take the Wheel” and “How Great Thou Art” and brought 4000 people to their feet applauding with hands lifted up. Beautiful!!! :-)

    Very, very sad to hear.

OMG. What a horrible accident. Condolences to everybody who knew him.

Man, that is hard and awful. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family as well as Carry and all the members of her tour. I pray that he was killed instantly on impact and before the truck caught fire.

Reading the facebook quote posted by windmills has me choking up. This had to be incredibly hard on Carry. ‘Temporary Home’ is the perfect song for … well, this. I’m sure we’ll get videos, but I’m not sure I’m going to be able to watch them.

Thank you for all your kind words for the truck driver – my friend Robert or as his friends called him Bob O. He leaves behind his parents, a girlfriend and soooooo many friends. We are all in shock. He was one of the nicest people you could ever meet – young – in his 40′s. We ask prayers for his family and loved ones. Thanks again for your kind words and thoughts.

I’m sorry to everyone (family, friends and the rest of the crew) who knew this driver. I’m sure the concert was very hard for Carry tonight and it sounds like she handled it with grace.

  • cookcricket

trav8, I’m very sorry for your loss. I’ve recently had a loss of someone very close myself. My prayers are with you and his loved ones.

  • TwigLA

trav8, my deepest condolences to you and all who knew and loved your friend, Bob O.

  • workdog

trav8, God’s blessing on your hearts at this time and always. There are never enough or correct words to say that will ease the sorrow, but knowing others are holding you and his loved ones in their hearts perhaps can lend some strength. Prayers to you all.

Sending good wishes to Carrie and all who knew him. Peace.

Thanks for your kind words everyone. I didn’t want Bob O’s memory to just be as just “some truck driver”. I can not imagine anything worse than burying your child. I ask that if you are the praying kind to say a word for his parents in your prayers. To Bob O – my friend – often my rock – a great driver – and a person who made the world a better place. I love you and already miss you buddy!

  • revcat

Thank you for those who knew Bob O for sharing. RIP

trav8: My prayers go out to you and his family and friends. I saw this accident in my rear-view mirror going to my daughter’s college this morning. I’m stunned to find out this is that accident. I pulled over, cried, and said a prayer for God to protect the victims. I didn’t even know him but I was moved to tears for him. From my vantage point, there looked to be many people that had pulled over and ran to try to help. Hopefully that gives you at least a small degree of comfort during this terrible time.

  • mandabutter

Unbelievably horrible. So tragic, I’m sure Bob touched many lives.

I just spent the day with my grandmother (my last grandparent on this earth) who turned 85 Saturday. I am reminded how precious life is and I’m grateful I’ve had 25 yrs with her. Tomorrow is never promised so let’s cherish this day, this hour, this moment.

  • offside

My condolences to Robert ‘s family and to all who were a part of his life.

  • Lu

What a terrible tragedy. Trav8, I’m glad you poseted here. I am the praying kind and will definitely be sending up prayers for Robert, you, and all of Robert’s friends and family. I’m so sorry for your loss.

  • thumper

I was driving the truck behind Robert when the crash occurred and want people to know that contrary to some news reports he did not fall asleep at the wheel. He was talking to the driver ahead of him on the CB radio when the crash occurred. Myself and other drivers think (and pray) that he may have suffered a heart attack or stroke and was either already dead or unconscious prior to the truck bursting into flames.

He was a good man and a good driver and will be missed by all that had the honor to know and work with him.

    God’s speed Bobby-O
