This week the kids tackle the music of their grandparents…or their great grandparents…

Heh. I kid.   It’s Rat Pack week–more or less a snazzier name for jazz standards week.

The Rat Pack was the nickname given to the clique of performers that hung out and performed together during the 60′s.   The Rat Pack was the World War II generation’s idea of cool.   Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop, Peter Lawford   and Sammy Davis Jr were at the center of the pack. A few women–Shirley MacLaine and Lauren Bacall were honorary members.

Given the long musical careers of three of the Rat Pack’s members–Sinatra, Martin and Davis–there should be tons of songs to choose from. Nearly every famous jazz standard has been covered at one time or another between the three.

This week, the Top 5 tackle two songs apiece. Good luck fitting the judges comments into an hour long show! Just make sure Paula Abdul leaves her psychic at home…

What do you think the Idols should sing? I’ll edit in my picks later…

Poor Allison. That picture looks like her father’s worst nightmare…

  • http://mollyblogsidol.wordpress.com Molly (aka sparklesgirl2)

I remember reading someone’s idea for Allison to sing “Someone to Watch Over Me.” She could kill that!

Kris oughta go for “Mr. Bojangles.” He could play guitar with it. For inspiration, he can YouTube the performance of it by Sam Nixon on UK’s season two of Pop Idol. That was Sam’s breakthrough performance; he eventually took third.

Adam should sing something by Billie Holiday… something with a bit of a darker edge. Did any of the Rat Pack members cover something like “Strange Fruit”?

Matt should recreate his Hollywood week by singing and playing “Georgia.” I would love to see that (but not at the expense of him staying in the competition over Kris or Allison!).

Danny… pick something schmoozey like “What a Wonderful World” and don’t change it up at all. :)

I haven’t given this a second thought, but am looking forward to the fake spoilers tomorrow. :-)

I remember reading someoneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s idea for Allison to sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Someone to Watch Over Me.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ She could kill that!

She’d sound amazing and might finally get Simon’s “lighten up” thing off her back by singing a sweet song.

I’d also love for her to do “Feelin’ Good” but I suspect Adam is doing that one, if what happened on the phone during the Upright Cabaret was a hint.

  • JudyOhio

^^^I hope that was a hint Niall. It sounds perfect for him (if allowed).

There have already been fake spoilers. From IDF…

    QUOTE
Directly from an anonymous member of Ricky Minors band here are some real spoilers which came in fresh this morning. Remember: these songs are the pics the Idols made before any dressed rehearsal but they are the real deal. Matt: ‘Fly me to the moon’ (originally Megan’s pick, but Matt insisted). Danny: ‘That’s Amore’ (his second pick is ‘i’ve got you under my skin’). Allison: ‘Can’t Take That Away From Me’. She already sung it during previous rehearsals and will probably do this one on stage. Adam ‘Leroy Brown’ or ‘That’s Life’. ‘That’s life’, was originally claimed by Kris (so don’t act all surprised if Kris comes out on stage with this one). Kris has chosen ‘Fever’ his second choice ‘That’s life’ might also be sung by Adam. And finally the groupperformance will showcast Allison in a leading role as the female voice in ‘Something Stupid’. Remember during rehearsals things might change.

  • mk88

1 Girl and 4 Guys? More like it’s Allison’s nightmare since all four are quite old for her and unavailable. Married/GF/Recently widowed/Batting for the other team.

What she has just acquired – 4 older and possibly protective ‘brothers’. Although I think we could also include Anoop as well considering how Anoop teased her when they were the bottom two last week in regards to her reaction to David A. Her future relationship would be tainted by the fact she was:

    a. Surrounded by good looking guys (Danny and Matt could be considered above average in looks)
    b. Sweet and stylish ‘brothers’ (Not all fit in this category)

But what a nightmare it would be. I would love to trade places with Allison. Even with the possibilities of having Danny making embarrassing remarks!!

  • xdahlia

Wow, this is the first time I ever saw the top five picture. I’ve been unconsciously avoiding it since Anoop left. This makes me sad.

  • Mary

I would love to hear Adam do “Feeling Good,” but it’s hard for me to believe that he’d spoil his song choice so early and intentionally.

Then again, why would he pick that song out of the blue, instead of just doing a few bars of “Crazy,” for example?

  • geekygirl

Hope those spoilers are fake, for the most part yuck! I like Fly me to the Moon and Got you under my skin. Don’t want Danny to sing it tho. Allison would be good at Can’t Take That Away from Me.

Someone to Watch over Me is also a good one for Allison, sweet and vulnerable after last weeks choice. I also think she would do Cry Me a River justice. I know there might be some comparison to the recent Susan Boyle mania, but Allison would sing it completely different with her raspy soulful spin.

Would love if Adam did “Feeling Good”

Mr Bojangles is a good idea. Sam Nixon’s performance was one of my all time favourites! I still have it recorded. He kinda reminds me of Kris a bit, small and cute.

And please no one do Sway!!! It has never worked for anyone!! It is a standard on the british Xfactor and I think Jordin did it too and it always falls flat!

ETA: I just went and youtubed Sam’s performance I wanted to hear it. Still brings tears to my eyes. This is the best recording http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxIYlONqssE

It’s funny as Big Band night was the first time the contestants sang with a live band.

  • geekygirl

This got me thinking, what did the Pop Idol singers do on what was called Big Band night on the original show and this would be a great choice for someone, Beyond the Sea. Will Young is the original pop idol who started this whole mess, he had the most unique pitch perfect voice and nailed just about everything he sang tho he wasn’t TCO to win. Just a fantatic singer and as Darin worked at the Sands along with the Rat Pack it might count. Check out

  • Thea

Sorry if I missed it but are they singing two songs this week? I am hoping it’s one but longer. Some songs really need more than 1 1/2 minutes. Although for some performances 20 seconds would be more than enough :)

  • Anastasia72071

I apologize in advance if this is too off-topic, but thinking about Adam, I am reminded that Canada had our own OTT contestant a couple of years ago – Jacob Hoggard (finished 3rd) – spiky hair, pierced lip, kooky/crazy/goofball alt-rocker. He did Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ – in a metallic blue jumpsuit! Compared to Jacob, Adam’s performances have been pretty white bread, LOL.

Wish Matt delivers his performance of a lifetime… this genre he excels at please Matt show the world that you deserve to be in this competition! make it pass this week Matt!!!…. go back to piano and please sing any great song from this Rat Pack (not familiar with any of these songs)… and just bring it Matt!! you can sing Georgia, Matt, bring it Matt, BRING IT!!!!!!!!!

  • 4got

Matt looks very much the outsider in that pic.

  • mandalay

Adam – I’ve Gotta Be Me, What Kind of Fool Am I (my favorite choice), Who Can I Turn To.

Allison could have a nice softer song moment with this version of Fly Me To The Moon by Lorrie Morgan.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkUXVafC3zY

Love the Muse rendition of Feeling Good. I really do hope Adam does that.

Are there two songs each or one?

  • chessguy99

The Idol website says two songs, a mouse-over bubble on the first little box that says Rat Pack standards.

I like They Can’t Take That Away From Me for Allison, especially Rosematy Clooney’s slightly up-tempo swing version. Someone to Watch Over Me would be good for the slower song, just that Kat McPhee owned that back in season 5. Going over the potential songs there are just so many with alcholol references, she doesn’t have much to choose from. She’s been getting away with the sexual type songs, but drinking would definately be over the line.

“Matt looks very much the outsider in that pic.”

Yes, he does. The could have easily flanked her with two a side. More TPTB subtlely pushing their Top 4.

  • geekygirl

wow, totally agree Muse’s version of Feeling Good has Adam’s name written all over it!! Hope he does it.

  • elisa3da

Kris: you can sing any songs … but I hope you’ll ‘shop’ in the woman department again. My Funny Valentine perhaps ???

  • SpencerB

    Kris: Mr. Bojangles
    Adam: ????
    Matt: Something big band
Danny: Preferably something crappy (cuz i hate him)
Allison: Anything that makes her stay!!!

  • Layla

Compared to Jacob, Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s performances have been pretty white bread, LOL.

White bread? heh. The difference is that Jacob can’t sing for shit and is totally camp in a bad way.

IÂ ¨’d love to hear Adam sing “Feeling Good” a la Muse. That would be awesome…and oh so sexy.

Kris should stay away from Mr Bojangles…and the guitar. For the slow number he needs to sit on a stool, sing his little heart out and show some personality while singing and not thos rubbery looking faces he makes..uite unattractive.

I would actually like to hear him sing “Fly Me to the Moon”

I am really excited for this theme and that they will sing two songs. Gotta think of some more sons…there are so many great songs from this genre.

  • primeminister

Dean Martin covered “Georgia on my Mind”, but that’s too smart a song choice for Matt, so I doubt he picked it.

  • justshootme

I’m mainly interested in Adam at this point…. I posted this link to an article with embedded copies of various Feeling Good covers the other day. Everything from the original Nina Simone to (ack) Pussycat Dolls. It’s interesting. And I did find a Sammie Davis Jr. cover out there so I guess it passes the Rat Pack test. Except, I’m not sure if his doing it the other night makes it more or less likely that he’d be doing it tomorrow. Hmm.
    http://www.squidoo.com/cover-feeling-good

ETA: Crap. I just went back to this site and most of the vids have been pulled. Copyright infringment is so overrated.

Nature Boy would also be a good choice for him I think. Bowie covered it.

  • ilovenpt123

Adam – SWAY by Dean Martin would be great. Big band sound. I think will be his up tempo week.

  • savgal

How do we know the IDF spoilers are fake?
I got excited to think Kris might sing “Fever”. Really wanted to hear what he would do with it! Very minimalist accompaniment, dark suit…he could rock it. And “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” is one of my very favorite songs from the ’30s, if that is Allison’s. I love the movie where Fred Astaire sings that to Ginger Rogers. It’s true that a lot of the Rat Pack songs have to do with drinking; I love the melody and mood of “One For My Baby”, but as it is about someone drowning their sorrows, hard to imagine these guys doing it, although Carrie has made millions pretending to vandalize cars and marry strangers in Vegas, so why can’t one of these kids play-act a song like that?

  • justshootme

Umm. Is that Leroy Brown the same Bad Bad Leroy Brown that Jim Croce did? Cuz I reeeeeally can’t picture Adam doing that. At all.

And I think he’d avoid Sway since it’s been covered on AI already. I remember Melinda Doolittle did it.

  • bean99

I wonder how strict the theme will be? If it’s Rat Pack standards you’d think they couldn’t do songs they individually did later but you never know, I guess. If they’re doing 2 songs it could make if difficult for them to find ones they can change a little to make them more current. I’m still not sure if they will because Anoop only talked about one song when asked what he’d do if he were there.

  • geekygirl

And I think heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d avoid Sway since ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been covered on AI already. I remember Melinda Doolittle did it.

Was it Melinda? I knew someone did, I thought it was Jordin. Anyway totally agree to avoid it, for some reason that song never works. I’ve seen it several times here too and it always gets panned. Altho if anyone could pull it off, probably Adam has the best chance. Sway has bad luck on AI, even the singer named Sway didn’t last very long! lol

Umm. Is that Leroy Brown the same Bad Bad Leroy Brown that Jim Croce did?

I was wondering the same thing! How is that a Rat Pack standard?? Altho on IDF someone posted a vid of Sinatra covering it in the spoiler section. But really bad choice on that one if he is doing it. I loved Jim Croce but that was one of my least fav songs of his.

ETA: Just did a read on Wikipedia about Feeling Good, it has quite a history! Lots of interesting facts. The Muse version came 5th in the list of the best covers ever, in a poll by Total Guitar so Adam plays a smart game, he will probably do this. Funny that both Leslie Hunt and A J Tabaldo both got eliminated when they did it. It’s been done a lot on a lot of Idol shows and on XFactor too.

  • justshootme

The official AI site says 2 songs from each contestant.

  • janerazor

I saw a thing on tv about Jim Croce; apparently the song “Bad Bad Leroy Brown” was written about a guy named…Leroy Brown. Heh, what an awesome thing to have following you around your whole life. “Yes, I am that Leroy Brown.”

I don’t think Allison should do “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” She’d be great, but the lyrics of that one indicate “here’s your hat, what’s your hurry.” The song is about the memories of a love affair that is over. Not what you want to be singing when you were B3 last week.

I still say that someone should do “With a Song in my Heart,” because not only is it a great song with a wonderful melody, but the lyrics would fit so perfectly with what AI is all about (or should be all about). I’m a-hatin’ on ya’, Matt, for takin’ out my Anoop, but I will vote for ya’ if ya’ do that one.

  • bean99

The official AI site says 2 songs from each contestant.

If that’s true they had better extend the show because they barely got 7 songs in last week.

  • justshootme

If thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s true they had better extend the show because they barely got 7 songs in last week.

Yeah. This was Paulagate week last year and they only had three judges yammering, so you’d *think* TPTB would recognize the potential problem and come up with a solution. Or not.

  • kimberann

This theme week is one of my favorites.

  • nonsequitur

If the producers didn’t want a total sausage fest going into the finals, then why did they pick a genre like Rat Pack that so disfavors anyone with a vagina? I know there were some good girl tunes from that era, but the very mention of Rat Pack conjures up that whole macho ring-a-ding ethos complete with a Pall Mall hanging off the lip and the tinkle of ice cubes in a high-ball glass. I truly fear for Allison this week. Anyways, Dean Martin did a cover of the very awesome “C’est Si Bon” made famous by the most awesome ever Eartha Kitt, and that would be my dream pick.

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

As much as they have sometimes frowned on repeats I think Matt singing Georgia would be a great choice. Most of us fell in love with his teaser portion of it in Hollywood week and I am chomping at the bit for a longer version. He should have a bit of confidence in his ability to sing it well, and if he could manage not to murder it with “too many notes” it could go a long way towards redeeming him in many minds.

I did like the Mr. Bojangles suggestion for Kris. I hate that song but it does lend itself to his style.
Ditto Someone To Watch Over Me Allison- she’s in a house with four older brother men and it seems to fit really well.

I would adore Adam doing Feeling Good in a dark, smoldery, sexed up way torch singer style- just him alone on the stage with a stand up bass. Yowser. But then I will adore whatever he does so can’t speculate.

    Danny- picture this.
    He’s a whistler, right?
So in addition to the fedora and jacket slung casually over his shoulder we will get the entire streetlight and fog film noir treatment as he whistles his way out of frame at the end.
    Song?
Who can even begin to read this mind mind re song choice.
    Certainly not me.

  • abbysee

    Jacob Hoggard (finished 3rd

Really now? That was all kinds of god awful cheesy. And bad too!

  • Kmorr

I have a feeling that Adam will sing “My Way” by Frank Sinatra, but the Sex Pistols version.

  • sunchick

If the producers didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want a total sausage fest going into the finals, then why did they pick a genre like Rat Pack that so disfavors anyone with a vagina?

Kelly’s big moment came from Big Band Week, though. And AI audiences have embraced cross gender song selection recently, when a guy sings a chick’s song and makes it work or vice versa. So, I don’t think they are gunning for Allison’s ouster. Her biggest problem isn’t going to be the gender-specifity of the theme, anyway. It’s going to be the vibe of the material. She can’t power her way through a lot of these songs like she has everything else, but that might be a blessing in disguise and kind of force her to try some subtlety or something fun like Kelly’s Stuff Like That There.

I imagine a lot of people are going to expect this theme to come easily to Matt after he nailed Georgia, so whatever he picks, he really, reealllly has to nail it or he’ll be in trouble. If Matt wanted to be cheeky again he could go for Luck Be A Lady.

Adam will be fine. I hope he does sing Feeling Good and Muse it up, and then sings his second song straight, Rat Pack style. The Sid Vicious version of My Way is probably one of the most awesome things ever in the history of covers :wub_tb: and if anyone from this group could take it on it’s Adam, but older voters won’t get why it works as a punk anthem. Jacob Hoggard killed with Straighten Up And Fly Right, so that was the first song that came to mind for Adam.

Hopefully Kris’s knack for picking the right song will continue. My Funny Valentine for him is an interesting suggestion because he can’t really be compared to Melinda. I think maybe he could do well with the wistfullness of something like What Kind Of Fool Am I.

Thinking about Danny makes my head hurt so I’m not going there.

  • penmaster

Kris should sing the Nina Simone version of Mr Bojangles. It’s a masterpiece and the best version of the song ever done.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONBT1nnH-HU

Adam should sing I’ll be Seeing You the Johnny Mathis version:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xrm-zu2nHI0

    Other clssic song suggestions:

    My Funny Valentine
    All The Way
    That’s Life
    My Way

  • nonsequitur

Big Band era music was gender-neutral and in fact often featured girl singers fronting an orchestra or else simply all-girl acts. As others have suggested, the producers could have just called this week’s theme “Jazz Standards” but instead chose a label closely associated with an all-boys club of hipness and retro-cool (think Don Draper and co.). I don’t think Allison faces insurmountable odds, but she needs to be really smart with her song choices and NOT sing something age-inappropriate yet again. “I’ve Got a Crush on You” for example would be simply charming and lovely.

  • NYCSlain

I definitely agree with Someone to Watch Over Me for Allison. She needs to sing at least one tender ballad like she did with I Can’t Make You Love Me. My Funny Valentine would be great, too. I don’t think she should worry about a Melinda comparison from the judges – she sang Alone and I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing, and they never mentioned Carrie and David C.!

  • JudyOhio

I’m really looking forward to this theme. There appears to be a lot more songs to choose from than I originally thought and GOOD ones at that! Bring it on!

  • justantonio

this is the best thing Jacob Hoggard did on Canadian Idol and it applies to Rat Pack week…he sings “put your head on my shoulder” this was the week he dialed everything down the way Adam has been doing

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_SouXzlyw0

also that Jacob guy didn’t finish 3rd…he pulled a Mario Vazquez and left the competition. ALthough he did wait till top 3 to leave when he was the favorite to win. When asked why he left…he said he joined as a joke with his friends and after he got so far he thought the joke had gone on long enough..he didn’t want to be the canadian idol…and he has since done well with his band doing his own style music. Almost sounds like a road Adam could take

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

Sid did My Way, not the Pistols. And if Adam did it, I hope he does it in French ;O

Add me to the list on wanting Adam to do the Muse version of Feeling Good. Muse is just awesome, period, and that cover is gorgeous.

  • NYCSlain

Allison sang a lot of Spanish songs when she was younger. I wonder if she considered doing Sway, in Spanish – “Â’Quià ©n serà ¡?”. It’d be a big risk, but at least it would show a different side and make her stand out. If she did that and a ballad and nailed both, she could have a pretty amazing night! :-)

  • thesheriff

what difference does it make what they sing if they are going rearrange everything to make it current, relevant, artistic etc? hate those words…

the joy of season 1′s big band night, for me, was that it sounded like big band night.

  • http://idolforums.com/index.php?showtopic=561466&st=0 Preston

    Some choices…

For Adam: Sammy Davis Jr’s version of “What Kind of Fool I Am” (except much higher, clearly!). I think if he just sang it straight, this could be a helluva knockout performance.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk8vPCelEXI

For Matt or Kris: Bobby Darin’s version of “Call Me Irresponsible“… I think this would play to both of their strengths: their smooth vocals, not the most difficult melody, and the song has a sense of playfulness about it that either could pull off very well.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxSaTeTHnjU

For Allison: Vera Lynn’s cover of Sinatra’s “Strangers In The Night“… the thing with Allison is that I don’t think she gets much recognition for the simple, raw beauty of her voice (as was evident in “I Can’t Make You Love Me”), so this week should be good for her no matter what she sings. Still, I’d love to see her do SITN, really scaled back, perhaps sitting on a stool with limited lighting… this could be a real moment for her.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IcckpHjuYM

I think in general, the contestants should shy away from drastic rearrangements; these songs are beautiful in their original form. Plus, if you look at the history of Big Band night on idol, all the successful performances are those that stayed very true to the original (Kelly’s SLTT, Tamyra’s MTM, LaToya’s DROMP, Fantasia’s WAYDTROYL, Katharine’s STWOM, Paris’s TFT, Melinda’s IGR, etc etc etc). This is a chance for each contestant to show how good of a singer they are… and really, I think all five left could legitimately make that claim.

  • LoveU

    Kris: you can sing any songs à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ but I hope youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢shopà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ in the woman department again. My Funny Valentine perhaps ???

Strange, I always think of this as a man’s song….Chet Baker, Sinatra, Sting, Tony Bennett…to name some off of the top of my head.

  • Jayd

    sausage fest

!!!LMAO :lol_tb: That really caught me off guard, but then it was omg!hahahahahaha!

When asked why he leftà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦he said he joined as a joke with his friends and after he got so far he thought the joke had gone on long enough..he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to be the canadian idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦and he has since done well with his band doing his own style music. Just my opinion, but I don’t think this is (or was) Adam’s goal at all. Judging by what I’ve seen of his personality, I really think he has too much integrity to do something like that. I think that would be the end of his career. He’s got too much invested to leave now.

  • Jayd

When asked why he leftà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦he said he joined as a joke with his friends and after he got so far he thought the joke had gone on long enough..he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to be the canadian idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦and he has since done well with his band doing his own style music. Ugh. I suck at this stuff. I don’t know any “old” music, other than Queen The Beatles, and Bing Crosby. That is IT. “Old” music is tthe Backstreet Boys.

Wouldn’t it be really cool if we had like a Pink theme week, and then an Usher theme week, and then a Beyonce/Destiny’s Child theme week? And why not Britney Spears?

I think those would be so cool, because I don’t think most young people can even name a Sinatra song, or even know who Sammie David Jr. is… unless they’re into E!, or oldies music. It’s just hard to enjoy people singing this stuff when I have no lnowledge of it.

  • holeighannie

For Kris: His ballad, as he’ll probably do one, should be “The Way You Look Tonight”. :D

Is it Rat Pack week or Big Band week? Paula and onr of the back up singers tweeted that it was big band week. Is there a difference? IMO both are irrelevant in the music scene today. Idol probably had someone from this genre offer to be on the show and whala!A new theme was born. Gain, just MO but I’d much rather hear the Idols do songs that are more main stream.

  • Qcloud9

Anoop said he would have sung “That’s Life” during “Rat Pack” week. It’s a great song and it’s the perfect choice for him, I think, if you listen to the lyrics.

I have no idea what anyone should sing this week, although it is my favorite theme.

Maybe someone could sing “Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered” to erase Kellie Pickler’s rendition from my mind.

  • lavender1960

And as Anastasia72071 likely knows, Jacob Hoggard has been the most successful Canadian Idol to date – he basically wanted his fans not to vote him on, I think he made Top 3, started up a band called Hedley and he is cleaning up in Canada and I think the band is trying to cross over to the US market now.

The kid knows how to write songs however and that is actually been the key to Hedley’s success.

  • lavender1960

Fever is a tough song, it has to be executed perfectly or it will be a disaster.

Michael Buble, Harry Connick Jr., Josh Groban, Matt Dusk……..big market for this stuff. Not my cup of tea but I do like Buble’s original song. He is smart, throwing in some original material is going to ensure his longevity.

Actually early Frank Sinatra stuff would have been considered pop not jazz standards during that time period.

To me most of the songs being discussed aren’t jazz standards except something like Peggy Lee’s Fever or Billie Holiday’s “Summertime”. Hence I guess the title Rat Pack songs.

  • Layla

I have to say again that I love this theme. My daughters (16 & 19) are very picky about music and love so many of these old standards….as do there friends. It is not uncommon at the parties they attend to hear Sinatra’Â ¨s “Fly Me to the Moon”, sandwiched between Lil Wayne and Portishead. They also attend a gymnaium (high school) where a quarter of the kids have music as one of their 2 main lines-so they really are into almost all types of music.

I think young musicians today are very aware of these standards- look at Muse-as they well should be. I dont think that every song from these decades are great but so many are…and timeless.

Adam singing “Feelin’ Good” will make me a very happy woman. “Who Can I Turn To” similar to how Jackie Wilson sings it, would also be a really good song.
Another good choice for Adam would be “These Foolish Things”.

I gotta get off Adam and move on to Allison and Kris.

I really believe that the contestants who can sing songs from this theme, interpret them and make them their own are the ones who really can sing.

Yeah …the wheat from the chaff.

  • Anastasia72071

And as Anastasia72071 likely knows, Jacob Hoggard has been the most successful Canadian Idol to date – he basically wanted his fans not to vote him on, I think he made Top 3, started up a band called Hedley and he is cleaning up in Canada and I think the band is trying to cross over to the US market now.

Actually, Hedley existed before Jacob appeared on Idol (I don’t know exactly how long). They had been playing the local scene here in Vancouver for at least a couple years prior to Jacob’s Idol stint. The current members of the band, aside from Jacob, are all new (post-Idol) though.

  • sallyas1

I’m with lavender. I don’t see any of these songs as jazz standard. More like early pop standard.

  • RemusL

this is the best thing Jacob Hoggard did on Canadian Idol and it applies to Rat Pack weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦he sings à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“put your head on my shoulderà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ this was the week he dialed everything down the way Adam has been doing

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_SouXzlyw0

also that Jacob guy didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t finish 3rdà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦he pulled a Mario Vazquez and left the competition. ALthough he did wait till top 3 to leave when he was the favorite to win. Almost sounds like a road Adam could take

justantonio, Jacob sang Paul Anka’s “Put Your Head On My Shoulder” during Top 10 week (Canadian Hits). David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” was in Top 9 week (British Invasion). The Top 4 week theme was Standards and Jacob sang “Straighten Up And Fly Right” and “Unforgettable”.

Yes, he did finish 3rd, since he was voted off on Top 3 Results night. So no, he didn’t “do a Mario Vazquez”. However, he had posted a blog entry (he had been doing this for several weeks during the competition and for some reason, TPTB didn’t completely disallow such a thing back then) which strongly suggested to his core fans that he wished to be voted off the show. After the competition was over, Jacob told many variations of both his reasons for entering CI (bet with his mom, bet with this band – both his band at the time and future bandmates whom he had never met before) and whether he told his fans to stop voting for him (no he didn’t, yes he did, etc, etc).

I don’t think he really had a chance of winning in any case and top 3 was probably as high as he would have finished, whether certain fans stopped voting or not. He was quite polarizing and there were many viewers who strongly disliked him. The frontrunner that year was always Kalan Porter, the best vocalist that season but the runner up, Theresa Sokyrka, also had a very strong fanbase. When the folk rock guy from Newfoundland went out in 4th place, one could see that his fans, the ones who continued to vote, were more likely to go for baby-faced Kalan with the deep manly-voice or cute folk-singer Theresa, than lip-ringed, over-the-top Jacob.

As for the strategy of not winning and hoping to fashion a better career that way, this is the 8th season of AI and a recession economy as well. Winning the competition garners a lot more attention, even for someone like Adam. Whatever our cynical feelings about the music industry execs, the AI winner will have the benefit of major marketing muscle that lower place finishers are less likely to get with budgets shrinking everywhere.

Yes, Jacob has become very successful doing his own music as part of a band but people sometimes forget that he went for months after CI playing low-paying gigs with nary a nibble from ANY label. And when industry folks finally took a look, they told him in no uncertain terms “we like you but not your band”. That might have been the end of the story until a chance meeting with 3 talented musicians whose own lead singer had inexplicably quit. Jacob made the hard decision to split from his old bandmates to form a new band (using the old name) and the rest, as they say, is history.

  • padawanewan

No clue what Adam will sing and he will surprise us all anyway. The bar will get raised again.

  • karenw

as far as those IDF spoilers go . I somehow can’t see them singing “Something Stupid” as the group number with Alison taking the lead as it would just be a bit uncomfortable the four guy’s singing that to her.

  • ppwars

I think many of the most popular of this genre are the easiest to sing – and to re-arrange. Allison will do as well, or better than anyone, but the theme says it all: RAT PACK. The songs will evoke memories of the Pack’s target audience which a female singer cannot overcome. Entrenched voters (most voters) are just that. Marginal female votes go to the guys. Marginal male votes …hell, do any males vote…go there as well ( the Pack was the guys’ guys of the day).

    Alli, practically no marginal votes.
The guys split based on performance and/or song selection – DUH.

They are singing two songs this week–both are the same theme.

  • piperlily

I don’t know what to suggest, except for them all to take a cue from Kelly Clarkson when she nailed Stuff Like That There — down to the dress, everything! It was awesome and memorable.
If they all can somehow follow that and do it well enough, then I’ll be excited for this theme. Otherwise…. ugh.

  • TheRealLife

Here’s a clue from the backup singer regarding tomorrow’s songs….

At Idol rehearsal. Trying to figure out what exactly we’re supposed 2 sing on this Foxx tune. I think robots would be better suited 4 this.

    http://twitter.com/Syberspace

  • savgal

Season 5 memorable with this theme, and I think they all did dress for the part, Chris Daughtry even wearing a vest with a white shirt (sleeves rolled up though). Seems to me it was one of the best nights of the season, and I was reminded of that with the reference to Pickler’s “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered”. Paris Bennett sang a lovely song (was it “These Little things”?), while wearing a beautiful, full-skirted cocktail dress. Just remember that it was a classy show, and no one did badly. Hoping for that tomorrow.

  • janerazor

    Anoop said he would have sung à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ during à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Rat Packà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ week. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a great song and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the perfect choice for him, I think, if you listen to the lyrics.

Oh, that hurts my heart a little…I think he could have done really well with that song.

I don’t think Allison is at a grave disadvantage this week. Yes, the Rat Pack conjures up memories of cool old-school machismo…but pop/jazz standards are standards for a reason. So many of the songs have proved remarkably singable by a variety of voices.

  • JJ123

They are singing two songs this weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’both are the same theme.

thanks and I just went back and read in the main post….sorry I’m a little slow til about 2 in the afternoon haha!

  • maturin

The two song phase makes it a lot harder to call individual songs. I end up thinking in terms of overall impression, and how each remaining kid may do.

    Pros and Cons:

Adam: For: Rat Pack theme really IS a theatrical theme, with atmosphere and style and image creating the popular associations with that era. Oceans’ Eleven and other films.

This, plus Adam’s risk-taking approach to song choice, and his adaptability, favors The Lambert. Few signs of late season nerves, either, so an utter lead-losing trainwreck seems unlikely.

Against: it’s a very narrow theme, and unlike disco, Michael Jackson, Motown or rock, there aren’t artists from that era that Adam resembles in vocal tone. Adam’s song-choosing chops are far from infallible (PTFMWB). He has the frontrunner challenge of having to hit a high mark, or people will be disappointed: that’s not “fair” but neither is being an under-rated contestant.

This would be the week for Adam to break his fast/slow/fast, suit then the rocker pants pattern. Cabaret me some Night and Day, but do not Zodiac Show me some My Way.

Oh my god I’m actually having an aural hallucination of a Lambert “My Way.” WuahAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY. No, please, no.

Allison: the smokey tone and Peggy Lee-ish wistfulness she worked into that Bonnie Raitt song are promising for Rat Pack era.

Against: singing your grandparents’ music is hard; emotional connection may be difficult; someone needs to dress the poor kid. Also, if she does terrific, she’s likely to get “Syesha”-like comments implying she’ll make a great third place finisher.

Kris: he should get momentum from his musicianship. And he has the ability to take it to the keyboard, along with Matt. His great phrasing and ability to connect with compelling, tender storytelling has served him well. Also, no signs of nerves, even on his least-good night (ASWTDD)

Against: like Adam, Kris’ voice and tone don’t overlap with the original Sinatra era. He’ll almost certainly have to change it up again to make it work for him. Alos, he’s very much succeeded by staying himself, the warm-hearted little guy in the plain white tee, on stage. Will that work transposed to the martini-flavored Rat Pack milieu? Still: he was re-engineered disco week with finesse, so who knows.

Matt: he’s a piano man. I feel like I want to channel Randy and shout: “You got this dawg, you got this!” Unlike Kris, he can throw on a suit and a fedora and hark back in his visual style. Might recall the strength of this early round take on Ray Charles.

Against: nerves and inconsistency. Loss of momentum. Kris is beating him up one side of the stage and down the other in putting together effective arrangements that come across as tight and lively on TV, so don’t know what’s up with that.

Danny: it’s weird commenting on Danny. He will pick a well-known song, possibly the Sinatra song that was featured in a Kodak commercial. He will sing a straight-up arrangement. It won’t be great or terrible (it’s funny how DG’s scores on WNTS are 50s right down the line). He won’t be criticized for doing the same thing week after week and never being original. Neither will he get the upside of big excitement from the judges that K/A/A will if they turn into something amazing. No headlines, because it won’t be either great or a trainwreck, and the web community won’t love it.

But he will apparently keep on going.

Hmmm. “Foxx” as in Jamie Foxx? Matt? “Georgia?”

  • karenw

yeah I was wondering if that was a clue to Matt and Georgia too

  • kerfuffle

Was Sinatra ever called The Silver Fox? I dunno, but I thought maybe he was. It wouldn’t make sense why “Foxx” was spelled with two x-es, though.

ETA: And is “robots” part of the clue, too? Hmmm …

  • wonderings

I’m with the masses that hope that they leave the songs relatively true & unscathed. Three cheers for dapper dressing! And Idol, please get rid of the blingy cordless for the week and bring back a nice old-style stand mic.

I’m rooting for someone to do “Me and the Night and the Music”. Perhaps Kris? I know it from the Sinatra version, but apparently Kris’s Idol Jamie Cullum has done a version…

(Please no Mr. Bojangles from anyone, ugh…)

  • wonderings

    Hmmm. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Foxxà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as in Jamie Foxx? Matt? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Georgia?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

ETA: And is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“robotsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ part of the clue, too? Hmmm

Hee. Sometimes a clue is so obvious that it’s tempting to overthink it. Georgia seems obvious here. I don’t quite know how background singers would fit into the arrangement, thus the robot mention?

  • TheRealLife

I don’t think Matt would perform Georgia again. It would IMO be too much of a risk. Yes he is amazing with that song and would have a moment but the judges may crucified him for singing a song he already sang. Plus it’s not like it wasn’t televised. They showed it during Hollywood rounds and then again during top 13 in one of his video packages. Didn’t Jamie Foxx play Ray Charles in a movie? Maybe it’s another song in the movie.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

If they are singing two songs, I can totally see Matt falling back into his comfort zone for one of them. It increases his chances of sticking around another week, particularly since this is one he does really well. I just wonder how the judges will receive it.

  • snuffles

I don’t think the back up singer is giving any complicated clues. Her Tweets have always been pretty straightforward. She’s NOT playing games with us.

  • Kirsten

At Idol rehearsal. Trying to figure out what exactly weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re supposed 2 sing on this Foxx tune. I think robots would be better suited 4 this.

LOL. So cryptic. I’ll sort this one out.

Clearly, the “Foxx” in question is Red Foxx. He was a comedian that played many of the same clubs as the Rat Pack and had a show called “Sanford and Son”. His character’s name on the show was “Fred Sanford” and his favourite song was “If I Didn’t Care”. Naturally, like all songs of the era, this song was covered by multiple members of the Rat Pack (including Sammy and Frankie). The song was also featured on an early clip of, wait for it, “Blade Runner” which was a movie about robots. So, there! LOL

    Or it could mean anything.

If it was “Georgie”, Jamie Foxx wouldn’t be the the person I would associate with that song. And robots? I don’t know.

  • ShellBen

I agree that if they’re singing two songs each, Matt could probably get away with one of them being “Georgia”. It’s not like he’s got a great shot at top 3 (or is it top 2?) where they get to reprise their best performance. He’s really got nothing to lose there. Though I’m kind of confused….it’s OK if the Rat Pack member just covered it? I thought it had to be an original song.

  • Ellie2

Maybe Adam is turning a Rat Pack song into a techno-tune, hence the robots reference. I would cringe at the thought, but at this point I’m fully on board the runaway Glambert train and know I will love whatever he does. Goodbye objectivity, it was nice knowing you!

  • Kirsten

Though Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m kind of confusedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s OK if the Rat Pack member just covered it?

I think a lot of their songs are covers. They just “worked it out and made the song their own, dawg”.

Maybe Adam is turning a Rat Pack song into a techno-tune, hence the robots reference.

I’ve wondering about Adam. If trends continue, he will do one heartfelt ballad (something like “Feeling Good”) and one OTT performance. Dean-o, Frankie and Sammy don’t exactly strike me as OTT guys. They are a little more mellow. Should be intersting what he spices up. I would laugh out loud if he tricked out “Mack The Knife” and used Ella’s botched lyrics (Frankie actually recorded a version with those lyrics). That song is pure cheese, so few would object to a parody of it.

  • cookbunny

So many suggestions I thought of have already been listed! I checked for this one: “Blues In The Night,” made famous by Rosemary Clooney. Could anyone see Allison knocking this one out of the ballpark?

  • SpencerB

    Call me crazy… But…
Even though it’s already had 3 memorable performances…
Allison could slow it down and hit it out of the park with “Over the Rainbow” (If that goes with the theme)
Otherwise, will someone PLEASE tell me while Snorkey Gokey hasn’t left my freaking TV yet!
(P.S.) Kris should do great, as usual
    KRIS, ADAM, ALLISON— FINAL 3!!!

Someone over at TWOP guessed its Jamie Foxx singing Blame It, which has robotic type singing in it. He could be appearing this week or making a tape for a later week. I tend to agree.

I’d actually love to hear Allison sing “I’m a Fool to Want You.” Frank Sinatra sang it, but it was also covered by Billie Holiday. Allison tapped into some emotion with “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” and I think she could top that here. Hopefully….

I don’t agree. Why would they be in rehearsals with Jamie Foxx? Don’t they usually bring their own bands and backup singers? And would they really come to the Idol stage to rehearse? Nah I think she was talking about one of the Idol’s songs.

  • Anastasia72071

I totally suck at trying to accurately guess what anyone will sing. What I WISH for is that one of Adam’s songs will be delivered in his lower range, which we have only seen a teeny-tiny bit of. [raises eyes beseechingly towards the heavens - "pleeeeeeeeze?!?!"]

A few people have said ‘noooooo’ to Mr. Bojangles for Kris (or anyone for that matter), but I like that song; it’s not overly complicated and I think Kris could do a good job.

I hope Allison knocks one (or two) out ‘o’ the park!!

I’m praying to the Idol Gods that Hokey keeps his plaid shirts and his gyrating at home this week. And when is that guy going to *shave*?!?! He always looks to me like he’s just rolled out of bed after a 3-day bender.

Has Matt gone to the doctor yet to get his third eye checked out??

I’ve been looking for Jamie Foxx videos and music all morning (since seeing the twitter) A lot of his stuff is techno, which fits in with the robot comment. But I really couldn’t figure any that would be considered Rat Pack.

  • abbysee

This catalog is too vast for me to think of anything off the top of my hat, and I don’t have any time to research it.

My wish for Adam is that is gives me a lovely heartfelt ballad, and that he also sings something straight up. No gimmick, just sing me a beautiful song. I am not worried about him this week because I just don’t see him being in jeopardy.

Kris, I think he is our runner up, I will likely forget what he sings by the end of the week though so I won’t even bother.

Matt is the wildcard for me this week. He could actually boot someone as I think if he drops all of the posing and pretense this is a week made for him. He is a showman, not quite on par with Adam, but he does know how to work the stage, and I could see him dressing the role of the song. That will be the key for him, and leave the bleating and shitty falsetto home. If he does this, he may win over a few more people

I don’t think Allison has a thing to worry about, there are some great songs that are not gender specific, and she has had the knack of picking good songs. My only worry is that she Pink’s up everything, then she will be in trouble. She has to keep it true to the genre this time, if she really wants to be a player. I think she is in a good spot being the only girl left. I think it sets her up for a top three finish for certain.

Danny must go. He is the weakest link, even though he sings better than Matt imho, he doesn’t possess any true vision, he doesn’t try to make it interesting, and it’s always as though he is bored until the song can go ‘shouty’ then he is happy. Problem is, by the time he gets shouty, I am bored with him. Therein lies the rub. His best chance is to be fully engaged during the entire song. Keep his ass still. Keep his hands in his pocket, and not shout at me. Anyway, he will pick the cheesiest song possible. Fromage y queso, a total cheese fest. That’s Danny. I think he has the most to lose this week.

  • nonsequitur

Danny must go…and yet, he never does. I can’t ever remember a front running contestant who was so widely reviled in so many various significant quarters. I seem to remember Constantine stirring up a fair amount of antipathy owing to his douchy poseur schtick, but he was dispatched with mid-way. Danny obviously has a substantial base of support somewhere, but seriously, who are these people? Is this another one of those vast right-wing conspiracies? A vast left-wing conspiracy? An alien invasion? I’m so perplexed. All I know is that his continued presence on the show with his attendant hideous taste in music and painful delivery offends my delicate sensibilities. As was (sort of) stated above, how can a singer deliver two separate performances within one song EVERY SINGLE TIME? It’s enough to make me go out and slash all the tires up and down my block. When he first appeared on the scene and we were all in that getting-to-know-you phase, he had the odd effect of triggering two simultaneous reactions in me: while he pushed the “oh poor schmuck” button, my “bitch, please” alarm was also going off. Now all I got is bitch, please.

  • New York Avon Lady

Matt is the Vote For The Worst pick this week.

  • TKat

On topic — I have quit guessing but think that this is a great songlist for all of the Top 5. My only worry is for Alison, because her song selections need to be great this week.

    A comment regarding Jacob Hoggard:

With all of the comments comparing Jacob Hoggard, the Canadian Idol 2 (2004) Top 3 elimination, to Adam Lambert. Yes, he was eliminated, he didn’t quit as someone in this thread mentioned. In any case, I thought that I would take a look/listen.

I watched most of his CI performances (I couldn’t make it thru “Only the Good Die Young”). And I agree, compared to Adam, Jacob had a far more real and exciting stage presentation. I also agree that I wish Adam would follw Jacob’s example and let go a bit more. Jacob’s performance of “Straighten Up And Fly Right” was down-right fun.

BUT there is absolutely no comparison vocally! Jacob appears to know his limitations and sellected/modified the songs to fit his voice. For example, he didn’t even try to hit the high notes in “Space Oddity” and avoided the low soft section. I have yet to hear Adam miss a note — and I think I have watched every Adam vid on YTube.

AND there is NO comparison in terms of emotional connection and maturity. Say what you want about Adam, but when he is on the stage, he completely owns it — without any gimmicks.

In any case, that all for pointing out Jacob. I wish AI had a few more people who were “performers” on stage.

  • http://www.idolbored.com OCCali

While I agree there is a market for Michael Buble, Harry Connick Jr., Josh Groban and Matt Dusk, it is more adult comtemporary which is not the general audience of AI. It’s just my opinion but I get tired of Idol having old stars and old themes when they are supposed to be looking for a current, relevant pop star. What’s worse is giving these younger people a catalog of old music to choose from and them telling them that they came across as too old or that their performance is irrelevant in today’s market.

Sorry, but I want to see the contestants sing things that give me an idea of who they are. It’d actually be nice if they got to choose their own songs every week and do away with the themes all together.

  • js

I think the kids would do quite well this week.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YvCdnmNJNs

Reminds me a lot of Nirvana unplugged when Cobain looked so frail….

The first full song, “Change Partners” is probably my fave Sinatra performance of all time.

  • Tess

Sorry, but I want to see the contestants sing things that give me an idea of who they are.

If we were to have Ai sing current songs it would JUST be a terrible kareoke competition and no one would really hear them sing….there would only be the comparisons to the original artist. Pretty much every song that has been sung this year that has come from the Top 40 songlist of the last few years was totally massacerd by the contestants because they can’t divorce themselves from the original artist that they have heard 10 times a day and neither could the audience.

  • baxter

ok confession time….one of my favorite songs of all time is Candyman sung by Sammy Davis JR. If anyone sings this song, not only will I power vote for 2 hours I will recruit every freakin neighbor that I have done favors for, friends that owe me money and will train my cat to use re-dial on the phone.

    * my Chat rep is soooo dead!!!!*

Danny must goà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦and yet, he never does. I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t ever remember a front running contestant who was so widely reviled in so many various significant quarters.

Fantasia Barrino, the winner of AI3, was the queen of polarization. But I guess it’s good to be queen.

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

Allison is the only contestant I’m worried about this week. She has a voice for the ages, but her song choices can be ill-fitting and her stage demeanor lackluster. She has zero margin for error.

I adore Tin Pan Alley music, but I am underwhelmed by the kids’ ability to pick the right songs — even Adam. For me, he peaked on Ring of Fire. I appreciate his shrewdness and restraint, but it leaves me yearning for another musical revelation. Even Cookie knew how to put the ART in SMART.

  • LoveU

Danny obviously has a substantial base of support somewhere, but seriously, who are these people?

I’ll tell you who. My hubby’s cousin: Female, mid-30′s, lives in a VERY southern state, is Southern Baptist.

Danny sounds like he sings at her church.

  • LoveU

If I were wishing what Adam would sing, George Michael put out a CD a few years back called “Songs From the Last Century” which was basically an album of “standards.” I would love for Adam to choose one of these. I am dying for him to sing George Michael!

I’m from the deep south, but since I moved away I suppose I don’t count. BUT, I have friends on facebook from high school who update their profile status with Adam love. Danny himself is from Wisconsin, so I think the key is the religious reason, rather than geographical. Look at DI geopredictions.

  • sleeptalker

so…that top 5 picture? I definitely covered Matt and Danny with my hands and got a biiiiiig smile on my face.

Allison, Kris and Adam are <3

  • joeysan

Gwendolyn D – Stormy Weather is an excellent choice for Allison. She could stick with the Ella Fitzgerald motif and do “That Old Black Magic” as an upbeat changeup.

Attire – Just a classy black dress, like Ella would have worn.

She would be even better served if she didn’t have the whole AI orchestra blasting behind her. No…just a single jazz guitarist with an L5 playing sweet rhythm comps to her uniquely soulful voice, mixing in a little scat like she did with Papa.

That’s how she impresses the judges this week.

  • Lexus

also that Jacob guy didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t finish 3rdà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦he pulled a Mario Vazquez and left the competition. ALthough he did wait till top 3 to leave when he was the favorite to win. When asked why he leftà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦he said he joined as a joke with his friends and after he got so far he thought the joke had gone on long enough..he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to be the canadian idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Jacob Hoggard never left Canadian Idol – he placed 3rd. He got his ass whooped by winner Kalan Porter who proved to be loads more talented (and much better looking) than him….and any other Canadian Idol contestant since. Jacob’s ‘wish to be voted off’ only came near the end when he realized he had no chance of winning. He wanted to save face so he asked his fanbase not to vote for him. He’s done well since, but facts are facts – he stayed on Idol until he was voted off. Kalan Porter was winning (and dominating) the game from Day 1 – there was no contest!

As for what I’d like to hear from Adam, I’m with robl27: Witchcraft would be amazing.

  • Grammie Kari

Matt seems out of place because it should be Anoop in that photo. I would have loved to hear him sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢.

I look forward to hearing Adam sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Wayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Frank Sinatra, Sid Vicious version.

What Kind Of Fool Am I is one of the most powerful songs requiring someone who can sing a money/glory note. Adam could easily pull that one off too.

Layla, I love to hear young people do appreciate the music of their grandparents/great-grandparents. True standards are timeless.

  • juliec

“Danny obviously has a substantial base of support somewhere, but seriously, who are these people? Is this another one of those vast right-wing conspiracies? A vast left-wing conspiracy? An alien invasion?”

Well, I really think that Danny is connecting to the older audience. Though in this site, there seems to be a lot hating but it doesnt represent the true picture of the competition. You might not like Dannys voice but theres a lot that do. Sometimes our hatred fails to see the potential of the contestant. I like Danny but I dont vote and I like Adam too and Kris!

Also, I would just like to mention that Allison has been twittering about David Archuleta. Is she trying to get the Archies vote? the contestant use to not able to advertise themselves outside the regular Idol program. Her tweets are in the Archie sites..hmm, trying to get votes?

  • Grammie Kari

Allison could slow it down and hit it out of the park with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Over the Rainbowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (If that goes with the theme)

    Spenser
, I know that Judy Garland was considered part of the Rat Pack, so maybe?

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m with lavender. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see any of these songs as jazz standard. More like early pop standard.

Traditional (standard) Pop is part of the genres that became the foundation for Rock and Roll, as is jazz. :cool1_tb:

I hope Idol NEVER stops having old stars and old themes. IMO, this concept is what has provided the generational bridge, especially between tweens/teens and their Grandparents. This is what makes AI unique. This is what challenges the contestants – that is, to get out of their comfort zone.

  • Susan

Simon and his damn Rat Pack… after John Stevens, he made his Irish group Westlife record an all-covers Rat Pack album back in 2004. They did “That’s Life” and it was one of the best songs on the album. “Clementine” is fun too. Most of that music is just too blah for me.

I think “Candy Man” is still my fave song by a Rat Pack artist. ;)

  • stelladallas

“I’ve Gotta Be Me” is one of my favorite Sammy Davis Jr. songs. I think it would be a great choice for Adam.

  • mandalay

LOL. I don’t care who was better than who. That was quite frankly the best season of Canadian Idol and the top 3 was all kinds of fun. And, may I also say that i t yielded one of the best group numbers ever. CI wasn’t afraid to slow it down and let all the Top 6 play instruments for Gordon Lightfoot’s Canadian Rail Trilogy. Sure, some of them were better than others, but they so clearly respected the music and enjoyed playing with each other, it was a moment for me.

Sometimes, in AI’s frenetic attempts to get a moment, they lose the moment. AI, you’ve got an hour for the results, you don’t have to mash the group number into 2 minutes. The source material is fantastic this week. We could have another S5:T4:Elvis group number this week if you tried. Or we could frenetically sing one song and give Ryan some more time to fill.

    As for songs suggestions:
Matt: “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Too Darn Hot” (to satisfy his need to riff)
Kris: “In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning” (stripped, just a guitar) and “Come Fly With Me” (his uptempo, bouncing ditty)
Allison: “Send in the Clowns” and “All of Me” or “Lady is a Tramp”
Danny: He belts everything, so just go with “My Way” and “Born Free”
Adam: “Feelin Good” (Muse style) and something upbeat he can go High on.

  • CDCIdol

According to Paula Abdul who was on Tommy and Brook( radio station in Michigan), Jamie Foxx is the surprise mentor.

Since they have a mentor this week, do you think they will show a pre-performance video package. If so, there is NO way that with each Idol performing 2 songs that they will finish in a hour.

  • Victoria

ETA: ^ What does Jamie Foxx have to do with the Rat Pack?

I’ve read through all the comments so far and recognized like 3 of the songs mentioned, maybe. :blink_tb: I know absolutely nothing about the Rat Pack, jazz, big band, or any of that.

Also, I would just like to mention that Allison has been twittering about David Archuleta. Is she trying to get the Archies vote? the contestant use to not able to advertise themselves outside the regular Idol program. Her tweets are in the Archie sites..hmm, trying to get votes?

I’m pretty sure her Twitter is fake. The contestants can’t have blogs or anything during the show, so I doubt they can have Twitter.

  • Skyeviews

Adam – “Remember Me” by Dean Martin. Beautiful song.

I barely listen to the rest of them so I don’t care what they sing.

  • Kirsten

If so, there is NO way that with each Idol performing 2 songs that they will finish in a hour.

No problem. They will have plenty of time to show the pre-performance video packages, long-winded comments from each judges and “witty” Ryan filler in one hour. All they have to do is skip the singing. You can tell the producers no longer think the contestants are an important part of the show, so it’s all good. Besides, most of these people have fan bases locked in already, so they’ll know who to vote for.

  • TheRealLife

I say they need to fire the current producers and beg Nigel to come back. WTF I was so looking forward to hearing Matt sing two songs. Who in the hell cares what Jamie Foxx has to say? He’s only coming on the show to promote his movie. If I wanted to see Jamie Foxx I’ll go see his movie. This show is supposed to be about the contestants not mentors, guest performers, or the lame judges.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I guess that means Matt ain’t singin’ “Georgia.”

  • TKat

Here is the podcast of Paula’a “Tommy and Brook” interview:

    http://www.westmichiganstar.com/podcast/TommyandBrook.xml

Paula reveals the “surprise” mentor — Jamie Foxx.
She never refers to the contestants doing one song.

The AI official Website however was changed and the homepage pop-up reference to each contestant signing two songs was removed!!

IF THEY DROP THE TOP 5 SECOND PERFORMANCE, IT WILL BE MORE PROOF THAT THE PRODUCERS ARE IDIOTS!

  • just sayin

I’m pissed that we’re losing the promised two songs from each Idol to make room for the big surprise mentor (and total jerk) Jamie Foxx. Blech. Get rid of Jamie Foxx and let the Idols sing their two songs. Damn.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m pissed that weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re losing the promised two songs from each Idol to make room for the big surprise mentor (and total jerk) Jamie Foxx.

I don’t think we’re losing a song because of Jamie Foxx. I think we’re losing a song because there’s not enough time for 10 performances and a fourth judge. Last year, they got all 10 performances – with Neil Diamond as a mentor – in under an hour. And, that was even with the last minute judging changes and Paula’s screw-up.

  • Tess

20 minutes of advertising….10 songs at 1:30 is 20 minutes…..40 critiques at 1 minute each 40 minutes….Jamie Foxx 20 minutes (I’m sure the movie studio is demanding equal time with the singers….Ryan’s lame jokes and introductions 10 minutes….Total 110 minutes. Nope ain’t fitting in an hour.

  • monkeyface619

I think having to sing two songs will magnify everyone’s strengths and weaknesses. Being anti-Danny I’m hoping at least one judge will say, “that second song sounded exactly the same as the first, which I didn’t care for.” and maybe the lemmings who vote will finally get a clue. I’ll be surprised if Adam doesn’t alternate up-tempo/stripped down. Kris should be smart enough to switch it up. I think it might be a long night for Allison if she lacks the requisite delicacy for this type of music. You’d think this night is tailor-made for Matt, but he has blown opps before.

  • NYCSlain

This sucks – PLEASE let there be two songs!!!!!!! :-(

  • PalmettoStateRocks

“I was so looking forward to hearing Matt sing two songs.”

So with you, TheRealLife. And I wanted Georgia to be the 2nd song.

  • ettacandy

    Tess, how about this:

    20 minutes of advertising.
    10 songs at 1:30 is 15 minutes.

If, like last year, they cut the judges back to one critique covering both songs, then:
10 critiques at 1 minute each is 10 minutes.

And one mentor package per contestant, then:
Jamie Foxx 1 minute per is 5 minutes.

Ryanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s lame jokes and introductions are 10 minutes.

Total run time = 60 minutes.

    It’s tight, but possible!

  • freestate

Backup singer just posted to her twitter account: At Idol rehearsal. Remaining contestants starting to seem very comfortable working the stage! Adam definitely has raised the bar… nice!

  • jane

This is so disappointing if the contestants only get to sing one song. I want to hear more from them and not all this other stuff. I agree. Get Nigel back. Things were much better then.

  • littlest D

At the risk of being pounded again . Kris is singing one song tonight “the way you look tonight” Should be pretty good.

  • littlest D

Jamie Foxx is the mentor for tonight also.

  • Heart

Tweets from Sy back up singer:

@tonicate10 All of the contestants are fun to work with which makes it easy!

2 minutes ago from web in reply to tonicate10At Idol rehearsal. Remaining contestants starting to seem very comfortable working the stage! Adam definitely has raised the bar… nice!

@Syberspace I know you can’t tell us song choice, but do you like Adam’s this week?

    @OhWhatAWorld14 Yep. I like it a lot.

  • littlest D

    Poor Little Dà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.probably wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t come back.

    GwendolynD,

    I’m back……………………………….No hard feelings here.

  • Michelle

I think that’s a great song for Kris! Wish we were still getting two songs from each, but oh well.

  • rbidol

haha, I was the one who doubted LittleD last week…and was wrong. But I have just one question…why has his named changed from LittleD to LittlestD?

  • littlest D

I shrunk over the weekend !

  • TKat

Well if Kris is singing “The Way You Look Tonight”, he will need a great arrangement. Perhaps he’ll make it more up-tempo. Otherwise, it seems somewhat boring to me.

  • littlest D

I am really looking forward to see what Kris does with this ! I have been impressed each week with how he changes the songs up to fit his style. He is really talented. The pressure is on tonight !!! All will have to makes some changes or they will get the karoke stamp from the judges !!! What a fun show!!! Just 5 left makes it extra fun !!

  • Michelle

I don’t think he should do a drastic makeover like last week, and not everyone needs a lightshow or acrobatics to make or find a song interesting. These songs have stood the test of time for a reason, they’re good songs. If he just sings it straight and put some heart into it, he’ll be fine.
