The Idols sang two Neil Diamond songs this week, but only recorded one. Here’s my take on this weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s recordings.

I’m listing the tunes in order of popularity, according to Rickey’s iTunes chart.

  • David Cook – “I’m Alive” – I hear that the DC fans would love a recorded version of “All I Ever Really Need is You”. So would I. I wish it would have been recorded instead of “I’m Alive”. But such as it is, this version rocks as much as it can, driven by Cookie’s passionate delivery.
  • Brooke White – “I Am…I Said” – Brooke’s live version of this song was moving and beautifully rendered. The recorded version isn’t as intimate as the live version, but it doesn’t disappoint.
  • Jason Castro – “Forever in Blue Jeans” – I’d love a truly acoustic version of this song. The strings are a bit much, but Jason’s quirky, laid back vocals are perfect for the breezy material.
  • David Archuleta – “Sweet Caroline” – I’m a little surprised that the rousing “America” wasn’t chosen as the studio recording. At this point, the overplayed original sounds karaoke. It’s tough to listen to knock-offs. Nevertheless, Archie does a nice job with the tired material.
  • Syesha Mercado – “Hello Again” – The scrappy Syesha delivers a sweet and understated performance here. As long as she backs off the high notes, which she does for the most part here, she sounds great. The arrangement is heavy on the syrupy strings. I wish the arrangers would knock that off.

  • chachi

I can only speak to Cocky’s because that is the only one I bought, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I totally agree with everything you said about it, mj. The song just isn’t as good as the other song. “I’m Alive” feels like the B-Side to “All I Really Need Is You.” It’s pleasant, but oh, what could’ve been. I generally prefer harder rock songs, but the actual *song* isn’t as good as AIRNIY, IMO.

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

chachi — Couldn’t have said it better myself. Still wishing for AIRNIY. :(

On that note, I have been putting “I’m Alive” on repeat one for the past two days in an attempt to warm up to it. I think it’s starting to work.

  • Jolene

Do we have any real hope to get “AIRNIY” studio version? I mean, I’m pretty sure they don’t have time to get one done now, but maybe after the season wraps? That’s the 2nd song after “Hello” that I really want to get a quality, full length recording.
The public demand is there, people were really waiting for that song… so the money is there too. The question is what can we do to make TPTB pay attention, if at all.

  • J.S.G.

According to the EW article, both Syesha and DavidC wanted ‘Hello Again.’
David gave Syesha the song and for that I’m eternally grateful.

  • dancingqueen

I like Jason’s & David C’s. I did also get Brooke’s, but, only because, I’ve been getting each of the top 12′s last performance.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Do we have any real hope to get à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“AIRNIYà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ studio version? I mean, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m pretty sure they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have time to get one done now, but maybe after the season wraps? I can’t see that happening. Once the show is over, the pressure doesn’t let up. There is the tour, and if DC wins or comes in 2nd, he’ll need every spare minute to concentrate on the CD.

  • hollygo9

Some of us who frequent Rickey.org have emailed Idol about interest in AIRNIY. Maybe like Solitaire for Clay, we could get it as a future one-off single.

  • Jolene

I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see that happening. Once the show is over, the pressure doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t let up. There is the tour, and if DC wins or comes in 2nd, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll need every spare minute to concentrate on the CD.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. I just don’t really get why they don’t do two studio versions. I mean, they did one each when there were 10 contestants, so the studio and the band can get 10 songs done in a week. Maybe they don’t want to make the idols record two tracks back to back, but I can’t see TPTB being quite so concerned with overworking their meal tickets. They are overworked regardless.

I did hear something about Melinda recording “My Funny Valentine” post show? I may have gotten this completely wrong, as I did not watch last season.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I did hear something about Melinda recording à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Funny Valentineà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ post show? I may have gotten this completely wrong, as I did not watch last season.

She recorded it for iTunes. She released it on February 14.

  • Ionnise

Does anyone know how the songs to be recorded are chosen? This is my first AI season; I’m a rookie :)

  • gabam

I bought Jason’s song. I loved it. I also would have loved to have had an acoustic version of the song.

  • http://whatwouldvoltairedo.blogspot.com/ palais

I bought Brooke’s, DC’s, and Jason’s. I have been listening all day to all three ( plus the Neil Diamond originals- guess who inherited her late mother’s music collection!). I still want AIRNIY, but I’m perfectly content with I’m Alive for now. I still like Brooke’s and Jason’s, despite the strings and the overblown production. I honestly think Jason just needs more performance experience, he’s fantastic in the studio.

I have no doubt there is much more Cookie to come. Including songs he’s written himself. I look forward to that.

  • hollygo9

I have no doubt there is much more Cookie to come.

Oh, I think our jars will soon overflow with cookies. Already dreaming about Tuesdavid night.

  • cheese

I’m enjoying “I’m Alive” as much as I can, considering it’s about babies, sunshine, flowers, hookers and being alive. I wouldn’t venture to guess who chose which song to record or why. I’m pleasantly surprised to see DC leading in iTunes this week with a song that sounds like it belongs in a Coke commercial in 1983. His gritty vocals certainly give it a less cheesy sound. AIRNIY was really pretty but I’m happy with the live mp3. I don’t want him recording any more Neil Diamond covers. I’d rather have him save his voice for those last 7 performances.

I’m also eagerly anticipating more original DC music and hope we get it, even if he does get DAUGHTRY’d by the other boys’ rabid fanbases and Syesha’s magical staying powers next week.

I think I’m going to buy FIBJ, too because that song has been stuck in my head since Tuesday.

  • ann11

MJ – thanks for mentioning AIRNIY! Love that song more than is reasonable, and hope he records it sooner rather than later.

Jolene – agree re wishing the idols could record BOTH songs instead of just one.

    Holly – “Tuesdavid night” LOL!

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m enjoying à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m Aliveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as much as I can, considering ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s about babies, sunshine, flowers, hookers and being alive.

I think this is part of the reason why I’m still not liking the song all that much. Cocky singing a song about babies and sunshine and flowers and hookers and being alive is kind of awkward for me, and sometimes I end up listening more to the lyrics than just enjoying the song. lol.

  • sciencefan

    I got Jason’s song. Beautiful.
His recording voice is so NICE!

I listened to the sample of Brooke’s. I wish it had the heart in it that she had on Wednesday night. She was aflame!

As an international fan without access to iTunes, I do have two questions, if someone could indulge my curiosity –
    1. Is the performance audio version of “AIRNIY” available for download, like the semi-finals songs were?
    2. Are the performance videos on iTunes the same as those that air on the show, or do they use different camera angles etc.?

    1. The performance audio version of “AIRNIY” is not available for download. You’ll have to get it at Rickey’s.

    2. In the ones I’ve looked at, they used the same camera angles. The only thing different was the removal of the contestants’ numbers.

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

Rickey has it up (the link’s on the sidebar, and he actually has pretty much every performance audio in mp3 form, if you’re interested). The sound quality is excellent, so I doubt you will be disappointed. :)

I’m contemplating getting FIBJ now. I could always delete it, but it sounds good from what everyone’s been saying.

  • hollygo9

The only David Cook video that had different camera angles was DayTripper. During the broadcast, they panned behind him during the second verse but on iTunes, it stayed on a tight close-up instead.

  • bean99

I guess I’m one of the few who prefers “I’m Alive” to the other song. I don’t think you’ll have any luck getting them to do the other song. I remember last season I wanted different studio songs for Blake but it was what it was. I was able to get the live versions elsewhere.

I think the reason they won’t release 2 studios is that the idols have enough on their plates with picking their songs, coming up with arrangements, rehearsing, the commercial, and whatnot without killing their voices on recording 2 songs.

  • Jolene

Thank you primeminister, Hisaki and hollygo9, much appreciated!
I actually have the audio from Rickey. I’m quite addicted to it by now, And I really hated the song when I heard the original. Guess that’s the power of Cookie, though. At this point, I can’t even muster concern about the coronation song, because if he can make me like Neil Diamond, Mariah Carey and Lionel Richie songs, I’m pretty sure he could make me like “Thank You For Believing In My Now”.

  • primeminister

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m pretty sure he could make me like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Thank You For Believing In My Nowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

What a brilliant title you came up with, Jolene! Maybe you should submit an entry for Idol Songwriting Competition 2009. heh ;)

  • GwendolynD

“I’m Alive” is growing on me, just as “Innocent” did. It’s catchy – hookers and all. :wink1_tb: As for “All I Really Need is You”, let’s just say that 1-minute-58-second live version isn’t nearly enough. Maybe he’ll release it as a single later.

  • GwendolynD

From what I’ve heard, lots of the potential coronation songs this year are pretty rock-heavy…or as much as they can possibly be. So….hopefully, they pick a good one. :cough:

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

hope we get it, even if he does get DAUGHTRYà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d

Being DAUGHTRY’d is not as bad as being BICE’d, right? LOL

  • longsong

I bought Jason’s FIBJ and Brooke’s “IAIS” – Loved ‘em both! FIBJ has been stuck in my head all the live long day and I haven’t minded one bit.

I wish there was some way that we COULD get recordings of each of the idol’s songs. However, since I’m sure there’s no way the producers would pass up a money making opportunity so I’m betting it’s because the idols are being spread too thin.

  • Jolene

Regarding the coronation song and possible alterations to it, thought this had an interesting quote from Simon Cowell:
    http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2008/05/simon-cowell-de.html
What do you suppose it means?

  • GwendolynD

When asked if the final two will get to change up the arrangement to better suit their vocal styles, Cowell hinted at a glimmer of hope: “I won’t give it away, but there’s a slight change to last year which is going to be an improvement.”

That’s very mysterious, Jolene. I have no idea.

I’m stoked, because I’m thinking what if they’re allowed to choose between the coronation song and an original composition?!

  • Jolene

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m stoked, because Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thinking what if theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re allowed to choose between the coronation song and an original composition?!

Oh, I’d love that! Didn’t even think about that option.
I thought it either meant that the song could be rearranged, or that two songs will be available, and each contestant could choose a different one (and somehow, one would be very Archie and one would be up DCook’s alley).

  • GwendolynD

And, it may be song rearrangement. Last year, Blake was told that he couldn’t rearrange “This is My Now” so he seemed to stand there and basically go through the motions. I don’t blame him, either. That song sucks…royally.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile

Studio versions of Top 5 songs on YouTube :)

    http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=44703A5763212AE9

  • mocha

Yea! Simon basically let the cat out of the bag, and indicated that the final 2 will get to change up the arrangment of the coronation song. So we won’t be subjected to the torture that was watching Blake suffer through the song last year. This almost guarantees a win for Cook, in my book.

  • joydrop

Thank goodness! That will make the finale more easy to swallow.

  • skylight1219

Gosh, it is inevitable that the Davids will be in the finale, that everyone has counted out the other 2? Just because TPTB have spewed this all over to anyone who will listen, doesn’t make it so. Cook, yes, he’s a lock on the top 2, but, let’s not get so hasty as to who the other person will be.

  • cheese

Based on Simon’s comment, I think there will be two coronation songs sung on the finale this year. I would love if they could sing their own songs, but I don’t think that would happen.

Maybe after last year, they realized that it just makes the show look bad if one of their non-belting finalists has to croak through a big, bombastic ballad. I think they probably have a David A song, a David C song, and a Jason song all ready to go (sort of like how they had different songs chosen for the Season 5 top 3)

  • Skylark

Do I Make You Proud was intended to be Elliott’s coronation song.

  • skylight1219

Yes, DIMYP, was supposed to be for Elliott. Taylor absolutely refused to sing whatever they had chosen for him. And, I might add, he did an awesome job with it. I wonder what song they had chosen for him? Kat’s was just horrible.

  • Jolene

Well, if they do each get a song, I really hope DC gets “No Turning Back”. It’s the only song out of the 20 that I actually went back and listened to again. It could be a hit IMO.

  • GwendolynD

Two coronation songs wouldn’t exactly be a surprise though, would it? Katharine and Taylor sang different songs Season 5, if I remember correctly, and weren’t Ruben’s and Clay’s songs different, or not?

  • GwendolynD

“No Turning Back” is the best one, Jolene. It was a little edgier, as far as the lyrics are concerned, and it’s not the typical coronation song, either.

  • Jolene

ITA. It’s a good song, and one that I could imagine as DC’s first single (were he to win. I really don’t want to celebrate too soon).
Someone uploaded it with lyrics to youtube: http://youtube.com/watch?v=HLZZwGzEiRI

Man, now I’m going to be disappointed if it turns out that Simon’s comment means something completely different.

  • Trina

They wanted Jordin to win last year so naturally they had to handicap Blake as much as possible. Sticking a sappy glorynote filled song on him without the ability to change it was the obvious way. Simon hinting that either there will be two songs this year, or that perhaps they may be able to switch it up makes me think they really are gunning for a Cookie win. They help when they want to help.

  • hapi

I sure would like to hear a studio version of Jason’s Daydream. Guess they didn’t do that until after that.

To me that’s his best performance.
Jason…look at that, the energy the voice variations. love it.

  • hollygo9

My guess is that they are going to offer the final 2 their pick of 4 or 5 songs and then give them carte blanche.
When they want to completely sandbag one finalist, they make them sing the same song but when they want to give TCO a fighting chance against a strong opponent, they give them different songs.

Example: Justin v Kelly – same song showed how Justin was just not match for her vocally.
Bo v Carrie – hamstrung Bo with a song that was not was not a good fit for his voice.

Clay v Ruben – Clay had a large powerful range but Ruben had more limitations so different songs discouraged the more direct comparison.

I have a question for anyone that knows about musical training. What do they do to help with hearing artists take breaths during their recordings? Is there some type of breath control exercises that help or do they edit it out or both? I notice in Jason’s recordings you can hear him catching his breath. I’ve heard others point that out too. Is that something with vocal training he will improve upon?

Vocal training can and will fix that. To be honest, Jason has absolutely NO vocal technique whatsoever. Hence, he runs out of breath at the ends of phrases, can’t hit many notes above his chest voice, and makes every breath heard. But all of the aforementioned things can be fixed.

  • primeminister

If the Top 2 get to pick their coronation song AND change it up, I bet DCook will pick something like Believe, Faith, or one of the more terrible songs just to FREAK CHEESE OUT! LOL.

I love the way Jason breathes when he sings and I absolutely love his phrasing. Different strokes.

I totally agree with this. A good vocal coach will do him a world of good. Another problem I’ve noticed is his posture when singing – whether he’s standing or sitting, he appears to be slightly hunched over. It cuts of his free air circulation. But…yeah, that can be remedied.

  • hicksaholic

Thanks I know nothing about singing technique. I only know what I like.

I hate to admit my stupidity but I went to Rickey’s to look for the live mp3′s and I can’t find any mp3′s – could someone tell me how to find them? Do I have to register? Thanks – I really really want DC’s other song from this week.

No need to register. Just find the performance post via the contestant links on the top right of the page, and at the bottom of the post there’s usually a link that says “Continue reading: [Contestant] — [Song] — MP3 Video”. After the jump, there’ll be something that says “Direct link to MP3 and video clip:”. The links to the mp3′s are after that, which you can right click and save.

I remember we found out pre-finale last year what the winning coronation song was. I wonder if that will happen again this year. I hope so.

I will be really curious to see what the “change” to this year’s coronation song will be. I hope it’s two different ones. I like those finales a lot better.

  • dante

Thanks so much Hisaki – That was SO easy!!!! I was looking for a thread or file with just mp3′s. I went there several times looking all over the site but didn’t go far enough under the contestants. I am happy now even though I hope they make a full length version of AIRNIY.

I love the studio version of “I Am… I Said” :) It’s been on repeat in my iTunes since yesterday.

for the final 2 song… i think its gonna be the same song… (or else why vote for the songwriting competition again this year) but they will be able to change it up

    one can hope anyway
