Sanjaya Malakar finally gets his homecoming party.   He’ll appear in the courtyard at The Commons (1928 S. Commons, Federal Way) at 4 p.m. Wednesday for a “Welcome Home” reception/autograph session.   For a dollar donation you can get Sanjaya’s autograph to  benefit local relief agency World Vision.

At noon Saturday, he’s scheduled to appear at the Mural Amphitheater at Seattle Center (305 Harrison St.).  Ãƒâ€š  The  event is free.   Sanjaya may, or may not sing. According to the press release, Sanjaya will be heading into the studio soon  to work on his debut album. Hm.

According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Idol musical arranger, Michael Orland, Jon Bon Jovi was not crazy about Blake Lewis’s arrangement of “You Give Love a Bad name.   Michael says, ” I was in the room watching Bon Jovi with him and Bon Jovi was not digging it at all. But I thought it was so incredible and respectful of Bon Jovi’s version.

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

    Sanjaya debut album….hm indeedy!

About Jon not liking Blake’s version…it’s probably just cuz Jon thinks that his version is the end all be all….personally, I couldn’t stand that song till I heard Blake’s version which updated it and took away the ‘big hair’ feel of a lousy song :-D

Boy, that’s about as mean as I’ve been about anything all season..lol

  • marco5ny

I’ve read a few places that Pink doesn’t clear her songs for the Idol contestants to sing but apparently she’s not above using the Idol audience to promote her album. Something doesn’t seem right about that.

  • hopeful

I could tell from the clip they showed Bon Jovi didn’t like it! Not news to me!

  • colette

Back again after a long weird absence.

“How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” by the very Rev. Al Green — wish Kiki was singing this, but Melinda could nail it too — tho Al’s is the bestest:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfzC4ofy6Dw

It’s clear to me that if they freed up “To Love Somebody” for Jordin, they want that kid to win. The BGs have written some wonderful songs, but that’s the showstopper if done right. Again, KiKi could kill with it, but oh well……

“Stayin’ Alive,” I don’t get it.

“Run to Me” — maybe. I’m still holding out a little hope for my girl. I know how many of you are “over” her, but to me she has the most genuine soul of all. But I’m not gonna cry if any of the others win. After all the disappointment this season, these four are Idol-worthy in my book — though I think Jordin is just too young artistically speaking.

    “Run to Me”:

  • RightSaidFred

“Love You Inside Out” and “How Deep is Your Love”. Pastor gonna pass out.

So Nigel went running to Barry ’cause why? Jordin-I’m-Just-17 cried on cue again to get the song she wanted? Pfft.

I can’t stop looking at that Final Four PR shot. Sooo many thoughts racing through my head. Soooo many possibilities for group snark. I’m thinking of a poster for a coming-of-age movie and Blake is the one who is…well, you know…”American Pie”, “American PIdol.”

A ‘caption this picture’ competition maybe?

  • Allison

They just better not trash Clay’s best version ever of “To Love Somebody” in order to bend over backwards in praise of li’l mis 17-year-old.

  • Venom

I cannot believe they are trying to re-perform that “How Deep is Your Love?” song that Blake, Chris S., Tom Lowe and Rudy sang at the Hollywood auditions. Why not just get the four guys back for that instead?

Individual song choices sound interesting though. I just hope Blake doesn’t totally ruin “You Should Be Dancing” with too much beat boxing. Last week’s performance was horrible enough.

  • jnd1221

Blake’s gonna rock. Jordin will probably be pimped, but can she live up to Clay? He OWNED “To Love Somebody.” LaKisha “Stayin Alive?” That just doesn’t work in my head. Maybe she’ll surprise me. Melinda will be Melinda. I don’t love her or dislike her, she’s just there and she’s nice. TEAM PLAID BABY!

  • bean99

I’m looking forward to Blake tonight but am not a fan of Bee Gees songs.

    Go Team Plaid!

  • t2

Oh sure, NOW you give us spoilers when I really don’t care what they are singing.

    Gee Thanks!

And yeah, so much grassy knoll stuff about “To Love Somebody”. Although “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” is on the same level.

  • gtrplayer

“Run to Me” is a great song. Raul Malo (formerly of the Mavericks) does a great version on his album “You’re Only Lonely”. I hope Lakisha does well with it.

  • xoxoyc

There have been other cases of contestants singing the same song as guest artists- and even cases where they’ve sang the same song as another contestant in the same week! (Season 4 Anthony and Carrie).

It’s not really a big deal- doesn’t prove any favoritism IMO.

  • radname

I didn’t hear any complaining when Clive got Bruce to clear Dancing in the Dark for Taylor.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Well radname, the difference is: 1. Bruce had never cleared a song for AI before, hence 2. “Dancing in the Dark” had never been performed on Idol before, 3. Bruce was not there to perform the song the very next night, and 4. it was not “Bruce Springsteen Week” on AI. Not a comparable situation, IMO.

Hi everyone. Wedding’s over, I’m back.

  • Kirsten

    Hi everyone. Weddingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s over, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m back.

Welcome back Sarah! We need a recap. Hope Blake does well tonight.

Nice summation of the Bruce issue. May I add another point.

    5. Clive picked the song. The singer did not request it.

BTW I just received a Blossom Dearie CD I’ve been waiting for. She has a song on there called “Bruce” which is hilarious. Totally off topic…sorry.

  • radname

It was still considered “special treatment”.

I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t hear any complaining when Clive got Bruce to clear Dancing in the Dark for Taylor.

I complained bitterly but not on this blog, lol. That and Something annoyed me greatly.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Ahhhh good point Kirsten! I can’t believe I left that out.

Anyway, thanks for the welcome back. Would you like for me to start with the “are the shoes going to come in or not?” fiasco or the “getting lost while playing chauffeur (sp?) and tour guide even though I’ve only lived here 4 months myself” fiasco? LOL.

No seriously, it was a beautiful, fairytale wedding; she really looked like a princess; the food was AMAZING; yes, I cried; I have probably walked 20 or 25 miles in the past 5 days; and apparently (at least according to my dad), I’m next. Heh. ;)

  • radname

I complained bitterly but not on this blog, lol. That and Something annoyed me greatly.

Let us not forget the top 4 encore performance of Taylors, from Rebecca, who actually was a Chris fan.
Although I will admit in Jordins case, and Taylors it’s only unfair if the others wanted to do the same thing and weren’t allowed. I don’t see how performing a song that mentor was going to perform the next day as all that bad.

  • Kirsten

I complained bitterly but not on this blog, lol. That and Something annoyed me greatly.

Gah! Not the “Something” debate again. Undo! Undo!

    Season 6 crumpets anyone?

  • Kirsten

Anyway, thanks for the welcome back. Would you like for me to start with the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“are the shoes going to come in or not?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ fiasco or the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“getting lost while playing chauffeur (sp?) and tour guide even though Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve only lived here 4 months myselfà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ fiasco? LOL.

We want to hear it all. Sounds like a beautiful wedding. Glad it was fun (and that it went so well that your Dad is looking forward to the next one…)

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    It was still considered à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“special treatmentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

You compared the situation to Taylor’s “Dancing in the Dark”. I was responding to that. It was not the same sort of situation in the least. It is like comparing apples and oranges.

    And special treatment, my ass.

  • Kirsten

Let us not forget the top 4 encore performance of Taylors, from Rebecca, who actually was a Chris fan.

OMG. It’s like one of those grease fires where you try to put it out with water and suddenly you burn down the entire city block.

    Call in the water bombers!

Season 6 thread! Season 6 examples!

e.g. Songs that were not from the British Invasion era on British Invasion night. See, it’s easy. No reason to rehash last year again. There are lots of iffy things this season.

  • Gary Seven

I’ve got this bad feeling Lakiska is going to lay an egg singing “Stayin Alive”.

  • Diana

I kinda wish Blake had chosen “Grease” — probably because that is one of the few BeeGee’s songs I actually know.

  • AngC30

And that she did…..so far not impressed at all by anyone….but in their defense, Barry Gibb and the bee gees have to be extremely difficult to do……lets see how jordin does….

  • AngC30

Jordin did very well so far…got pimpin from all 3 judges…and Barry Gibb!!! LOL!!! but she was the best so far…..

  • Diana

How did Blake do? The idol boards said not very well on the first one.
    What did the judges say?

Why does Jordin have the last spot again?

  • AngC30

Blake was criticized by the judges with both of his songs…and I dunno why jordin is last again….I thought the same thing…..

  • longsong

…and of COURSE they mentioned that Jordin is ONLY 17….again…. :annoyed_tb:

  • xoxoyc

Why is everyone soo upset about Jordin going last this week? Melinda has still had the pimp spot more than Jordin this season. Besides this sets up Blake to have it next week- which is the most important week to have it.

It works out best for him- he’s going to win anyway.

  • panz

Blake was abysmal tonight. Even so, I think LaKisha needed to hit home runs to stay in the competition and I don’t think she did it.

For the first time, I did not care for Melinda. Jordin was good, not great. I thought she could’ve done better.

    Very disappointing night, overall.

  • Jovi

Jordin is last cause she’s the judge’s choice this year to win it. Reminds me of Season 4.

  • AngC30

    Sigh……Is this season over yet? :downer_ee:…… :thumbdown_tb:

  • mosheeaka

Here’s my recap: (and for those of you complaining about Jordin going last, she went first last week)

    Melinda Doolittle

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Love You Insideà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ - Good vocals, but her version was just like LaToya London’s version- BORING. Did not make me jump out of my chair. Randy, Paula and Simon felt like it didn’t wow them in anyway and told her she can do better.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“How Can You Mend a Broken Heartà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Finally Melinda picks a song that I’ve actually heard of before (other than Heaven Knows). After what, eight weeks. The first half of the song was alright, but the second part was great. Randy felt it was better, Paula sitll wants to be wowed and Simon told her it booked her a ticket to the semifinals.

    Blake Lewis

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You Should Be Dancingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Beat-box style- Sang basically the whole thing in either beat box or falsetto. Not very good. Really pitchy and the beat boxing did not work out. Randy felt it didn’t work out for him. Paula liked the beat boxing but not the singing and Simon thought it was horrible. Personally I thought it was excruciating. I liked Blake best when he sang “Somewhere Only We Know” in Week 1 and wish he would sing more songs like that.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“This is Where I Came Inà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – There was a reason this song was not a hit for the BG’s. He added more beat boxing in this one too. Randy did not like it and told him he does not always have to beat box. Paula loved him. Simon said he was vulnerable. Unfortunately, the three divas will probably split votes leaving Blake safe.

    Lakisha Jones

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Stayinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Aliveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – LaKisha slowed this down a bit and did not go up as high. She got back to her shouting in parts, but overall I thought she did a good job of making it her own and didn’t think it was that bad. However, the judges hated it. Simon did not want to kiss her anymore. I don’t get how some can change up songs and some can’t. Definitely not as bad as the judges made it out.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Run to Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Wasn’t great, but wasn’t bad. Some parts of it were pretty good. Randy said it was better than the first song and Paula loved it. Simon basically ensured that she would leave by telling her she had a bad night and that she was as vulnerable as Blake. The two best Bon Jovi performers were the two worst tonight.

    Jordin Sparks

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“To Love Somebodyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Best performance of the night. When asked to compare it with Clay Aiken’s verison- you can’t. They are different. She made it a Mariah Careyish performance and did a nice job with it. Clay’s was also great. Barry said that it was probably the best version he had heard of it. The three judges loved it.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Woman in Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ - Jordin could have wrapped this competition up with a solid performance in her second song. Unfortunately, she made an awful song choice and Simon called it pagaenty. It seemed like she was whining the whole song. Randy didn’t like it that much and Paula loves it anyway. Even though I thought this was a horrible theme for the Top 4, Jordin could have picked a better song than this. However, if she sang “My Everything” she would have gotten compared to Kimberly Locke.

I wish they would make the themes more general like “Disco” or 80′s music rather than restricting songs to the BG’s or Bon Jovi. After all, they didn’t make country the Martina McBride song book week.

So in conclusion the best performer of the night- Jordin in “To Love Somebody” with Melinda as runner up in “Mend a Broken Heart”

Predictions for Bottom 2: Jordin and LaKisha

    Going home: La Kisha

    Should be going home: Blake

  • http://handicappingai6.blogspot.com RenaRF

WOW – what kind of meltdown was that between Jordin’s first and second song? Good grief.

  • http://handicappingai6.blogspot.com RenaRF

I saw upthread a question about how Blake did – the first song was a mess. The second was much better, I thought, but I think it could be problematic because he was the only one to pick a non-hit to perform. That will either work or hurt him.

  • longsong

I liked Blake’s second song much better, but wish he hadn’t chosen to beatbox on both. A little goes a long way. Love his skunky hair, though!

  • ghosting

I’m on the west coast so haven’t seen the show yet. I’m sad to hear Blake didn’t do so hot, as I am definitely on team plaid!

Can someone post the voting numbers for those of us who haven’t seen the show yet?

  • patmoran2006

    Goodbye, Lakisha..

She wasn’t better than Melinda or Jordin like she needed to be tonight. Not even close. On top of that, she’s over 8 points down on dialidol; ive never seen someone that far down at the bottom and survive.

She was the underdog with the final four much like Elliott Last year. The difference was Elliott absolutely blew everyone away on Elvis week.. Lakisha didn’t deliver.

As for Blake, I like the originality, but his beatboxing is getting old VERY fast.

I havent posted, but I’ve had the same thought for a long time and it was confirmed tonight (first time they sang multiple songs)

THe finale will be Blake vs Jordin. Melinda has to do three songs next week, and they’ll all sound the same. Although her voice is great, her delivery and style is predictable and boring. Jordin and Blake will roll to the finale (though I think Melinda deserves it more) and from there Jordin is going to belt her way through an “original song” to the title. Write that down; its a done deal.

  • longsong

Alas, patmoran, I think you’re right. We must be gazing into the same crystal ball.

  • Kylene

    Voting numbers, as requested:

    Melinda: 01, 04
    Blake: 02, 06
    Lakisha: 03, 07
    Jordin: 04, 08

Mostly, however, you should be dialing 02 or 06, based on the fact that you want Blake to continue, yes you do…. :wink_wp:

  • Kirsten

Why is everyone soo upset about Jordin going last this week? Melinda has still had the pimp spot more than Jordin this season.

That’s not true. Both Melinda and Jordin have been last 3 times. And Jordin is the only one to have been last 3 times in the finals. Lakisha has been last twice and Blake has been last once.

Meanwhile, Melinda and Blake have been first twice. Jordin has only been first once and has never gone first in the finals.

In other words, in the finals Jordin has had 33% of the pimp spots and 0% of the death spots. On average, Jordin gets the pimp spot every third week.

That is why people are upset.

  • Kylene

Darn it – scratch that, Melinda should be 01 and 05.

Sorry…darn stupid no edit…my fingers are cramping from voting for Blake….lol

  • ghosting

    Kylene–wonderful, thank you!

  • Kylene

PS – Loved how they *almost* ran out of time…thank goodness Simon was able to point out that Jordin is 17 just under the buzzer!! I was sweating it out there, wracking my brain trying to remember how old she was!!

  • Stefunny

I adore Melinda’s voice and hope she is in the final 2 but I want to see that pizzazz that Paula was talking about…I want a Tina Turner explosion or something…b/c sadly I was a bit bored by her tonight. :(

I much preferred Blake’s second song although I wish he had sung it straight. Beatboxing for both songs probably not the best choice as like longsong said, a little goes a long way and we’ve only heard one song at a time up until now so it doesn’t seem so forced, KWIM?

Once again, a mentor tells Lakisha to do something and she chooses her own way. Barry Gibb told her to go high (ala the male falsetto) on the “Ah-ah-ah-ah-stayin’ alive” part of the chorus and she stays low. And then that funky off-beat bit was interesting…but the song overall just lagged.

Jordin was back, esp. in the first song. High praise from Barry Gibb to call it the best rendition he’s ever heard. I thought she bordered on screetchy on the 2nd song but it wasn’t horrible.

I think the popularity of Melinda, Blake and Jordin mean Lakisha is out. She was just ho-hum and ho-hum can’t save someone if they don’t have a strong fanbase.

  • patmoran2006

I’m dissapointed about Lakisha. She proved in semi-week #1 and last week than when she actually finds a song that fits her she is the BEST singer in the competition. But she was far too inconistent; she reminds me an awful lot of Mandisa from last season; and NOT just because they are both heavier black woman.

This season has been watchable but not even in the same stratosphere as last season.

I am a LONG TIME reader (and admirer) of MJ’s Big Blog; but I’ve never posted before. Tonight’s show compelled me.

I will admit, I am a biased Elliott Yamin fan. I thought he got RIPPED in the semi’s last year. BUt still, at least last year the season was compelling. THis season it’s been anything but. Maybe that’ just me because last year I had Elliott (Carrie the year before) so every season I had someone to really root for, and this year I don’t.

Here are my feelings about the Final Four (Briefly)
Lakisha: She’ll make her mark in music. Good producers will find her the right songs. She’ll be marketable, I think she’s going to do really good over a long period of time.

Melinda: I love her to death and she NEVER messes up a note. But I dont think she has the kind of voice that will appeal long term in this market. I think she has one album that will do alright, and then she’ll kind of fade away (but not totally)

Blake: I could certainly UNDERSTAND why he has so many fans, especially on a show like Idol. And for this show, he’s “creative”. but in the post-Idol life, I dont think his style will fly. Interestingly, or maybe ironically, I think he’s actually a better singer than most. Some beat boxing is cool, but tonight showed it gets old fast and there are hunreds of great beat boxers out there who are like him and don’t cut it in the business. He needs a lot of work– but I could see him making an impact.

Jordin: I’ve already said I think she will win, and its because I think far and away she will have a HUGE career. I can see her being every big as KElly Clarkson has become. .She has the perfect voice for radio and at only 17 she’s a hell of a performer. Once she learns to not oversing every note she’s going to be spectacular; Im talking “Best new artist of 2007-08″ Grammy winner.

I dont like ALL her performances this year; but the one’s she’s nailed she’s been head and shoulders above the rest.

Sadly, I wish Elliott Yamin had waited one more year to live his Idol dream, because he would’ve OWNED this season.

  • baxter

Is it possible for Jordin to sing anything other than a ballad????? And even then…IMHO….not very well most of the time.

But Damn she is only 17….so that must count for something…at least that is what the judges want us to believe. :)

  • patmoran2006

    Baxter:
What counts most is how much money an Idol can make for the company AFTER the finale has been aired. And that person is Jordin. She will win (and Im not saying that’s right). Plus to be honest, I think Jordin has been the best singer, and although I admit Im a Jordin fan, I’m not THAT BIG of a Jordin fan. Melinda has been more consistent, but only Jordin has had that “wow” factor at times.

Of course, every now and then that assumption (predetermined by post Idol record sales) backfires as Daughtry is murdering Taylor HIcks on the charts now.

  • mosheeaka

Jordin has sung more than just ballads well, she’s done “Give Me One Reason”, “Heartbraker” and “Hey Baby”……I liked her version of Give Me one reason a lot.

Next week songs Jordin should sing for sure are:

“Strawberry Wine (at 17)” – by Deana Carter

“The Edge of Seventeen” by Stevie Nicks

“I’m not a girl, not yet a woman” by Brittney Spears

  • baxter

    Patmoran-
Appreciate the feedback but my comment was based on the fact that Jordin always sings these big ballads and not uptempo songs, cause when she does they suck. My statement has nothing to do with after Idol is over, but about her performances week in and week out. Melinda gets blasted for being blah by singing the same thing over and over, yet is consistent and on pitch everytime. Jordin goes uptempo…ie BOn jovi or Gwen Stefani and its a trainwreck. She sings big power ballads ( and not consistently or very well 50% of time) and is gets praised. So in my mind, Jordin sticks to the big ballad as a safety net, yet Melinda gets blasted for her sameness, yet is the better singer IMHO. Hope that made sense…its late and I’m tired!!! :)

  • patmoran2006

    Excellent point, Baxter.

Well, taken. I do agree Jordin appears to the “chosen” one.

  • baxter

Mosheeka….isn’t the song Hey Baby the Gwen Stefani song?? WOW, IMHO…that sucked LARGE!! To others it may have been fantastic…but me…not so much!! Heck I don’t even think Gwen liked it.

  • panz

Maybe Jordin can sing the Janis Ian classic “At Seventeen.”

  • Kylene

Maybe next week’s theme should be “Songs About Jordin’s Age”.

I think the rules might even allow that clever little tune from the Sound of Music, even though she’s no longer 16 GOING on 17.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not true. Both Melinda and Jordin have been last 3 times. And Jordin is the only one to have been last 3 times in the finals. Lakisha has been last twice and Blake has been last once.

I really love when Kirsten straight up tells the FACTS. Go Kirsten!

Is it possible for Jordin to sing anything other than a ballad????? And even thenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦IMHOà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.not very well most of the time.

But Damn she is only 17à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.so that must count for somethingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦at least that is what the judges want us to believe. :)

Man, Bax… I don’t see you post much anymore, but damn, when you do, you’re straight to the point!!! Baxter is my friend. :)

  • mosheeaka

She’s sung Broadway before with “You’ll Never Walk Alone” so she can sing that sound of music song….

Also, Mandy Moore has a song that Jordin can sing called “17″…

The ’17′ theme couldn’t be any worse than Beegees or Bon Jovi night.

  • Grammie Kari

It was a great theme but the performances weren’t as good as I thought they would be. Enough of the pimping for Jordin. We know – she’s the Chosen One.

I think Melinda did a fine job tonight but she has to come up with that special “WOW” that Paula wants from her.

Both Blake and Lakisha struggled but they were not awful.

Talk about boring – I think Simon would rather be somewhere else.

Phil never got the pimp spot. Well maybe when it was Top 24. I really missed him tonight.
