Top 3′s themeless week features 2 songs from each Idol and runs the gamut from R&B to pop rock to a latin-flavored Hip hop cover.   Something for everyone!

  • Danny Gokey – “Dance Little Sister Dance” by Terrence Trent D’Arby – The obscure “Dance Little Sister” wasn’t a great song choice for the competition (Paula, you’re so weird), but listening to the recording, the song is suited to Danny’s hoarse growl.   He’s got a little James Brown thrown in there for good measure. – iTunes
  • Kris Allen – “Apologize” by OneRepublic – I can’t get excited about this arrangement–it’s too similar to the original. But Kris digs in with a vocal interpretation that displays the right amount of passion and pain. – iTunes
  • Adam Lambert – “One” by U2 – Adam tones down the vocal gymnastics here to deliver a lovely and poignant rendition. Loved the live version. Love this too. – iTunes
  • Danny Gokey – “You Are So Beautiful” by Joe Cocker -   Danny’s lack of nuanced phrasing really hurts his balladeering.   The song alternates between breathy and shouty without much inbetween. Plus, this song is just too wedding singer sappy for me to take seriously.   iTunes
  • Kris Allen – “Heartless” by Kanye West -   The studio recording of “Heartless” doesn’t pack the emotional wallop of the live version, but its smooth, Santana-like vibe is pleasing nonetheless.   iTunes
  • Adam Lambert – “Cryin” by Aerosmith – Adam lays down an effortless vocal that features the perfect use of his rock wail to nail the tune’s emotional high points.   Good stuff. – iTunes

    Thanks MJ!!

    Loved both of Adam’s. :-)

Both versions of “One” are fantastic, as are both of “Cryin’” for me. I thought the live version of “One” completely captured Adam’s connection, conviction, and emotion, so I do miss that in the recording. Oh how I would love to have a longer live version!

All in all, great times for the Adam fan~

  • CindyM

I agree, love Adam’s studio version of “One”, but I loved the live version for the passion and emotion he showed. “Crying” has never been a favorite of mine, but I do like the studio version. If the backup singer hadn’t been so loud in the live version, I might have liked it better.

  • GeminiDolly

I did NOT like One live version, but the studio version if very pleasant listening. I liked how he left out the vocal acrobats on this one. CRYIN IS FANTASTIC. Love it, its on repeat. Didnt care to listen to the others.

If Adam doesnt win, Im going to have to whip a bitch.

  • primeminister

I’ve gotten over the shock of “Heartless” not being acoustic. Really, really like it now.

  • JOJOSIE

The folks who say Adam can’t sell records or make hit songs need to seriously listen to his I-Tunes. I love Adam live but think his voice alone is inspiring (a Kara word) but I have to agree with her.

  • anna in vegas

I bought everything “Adam” on iTunes and gifted. He is awesome and I love the studio versions which I wish we could see him perform live. In time………

  • CathyMK

I’ve been enjoying both of Kris’ songs and both of Adam’s. Kris’ are a little closer to the original than I’d prefer, but I still enjoy his voice on them. It seems like they all had to do the singles with the original arrangement, or close to it, this year. I remember last year the singles were closer to the original than the live versions, but still had more of the contestant’s vision overall.

Adam’s voice on One is absolutely beautiful.

I asked this yesterday, but it got lost in the shuffle. Does anyone remember Ryan saying anything about the iTunes songs disappearing this week? I think he announced it on the air once or twice during Top 3 week last year, but I don’t remember him saying anything last week. David Cook’s record-breaking sales that week were partly fueled by the fact that those songs weren’t going to be available after that, so I’m interested to see what happens this year, both with availability and whether they’ll be allowed to chart after the Finale. If TPTB are smart, they’ll leave everything up until after the tour is done. Last year lots of people came out of their concert fans of someone they didn’t care about on TV. Those people may well have been willing to buy the songs they’d just heard live if they’d still been available.

  • Truthiness

I actually liked both of Adam’s songs in studio version, where I didn’t like the middle part of his live version of One and the howler monkey back-up singer in the live Crying ruined that song for me. But I love the studio version of Crying and I despise this song as a general rule. And the One studio is without that hot mess in the middle, so I’m digging it.

On the other hand my utter FLOVE for Kris’s live Heartless, just didn’t survive Auto Tune’s vanilla-ization of it. Total snooze for me. I’ll just stick with listening to the live version and loving Kris for that.

  • spring2009

I LOVE the studio version of one – it is better than the original and I am a U2 fan.
Incidentally, I happened to be watching the live version of One today and the sound was off – the passion in that young man’s face says it all !

  • JohnM

After Tuesday, I had a bit of a revelation (and no, pun not intended!) regarding Danny’s performances. Much as I strongly dislike his singing, sometimes I almost actually enjoyed his upbeat numbers like this week’s Terence Trent D’Arby song, and it kind of freaked me out. But it wasn’t until this week that I realized why I almost liked them….

It was that I liked the band, not his performances. And that led me to the thought that he’s such a weak singer that the band carried him, while the better contestants carried their own performances and the band simply added support.

Okay, not an earth-shattering revelation, but I thought it was kind of interesting….

  • JohnM

Truthiness: On the other hand my utter FLOVE for Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s live Heartless, just didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t survive Auto Tuneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s vanilla-ization of it.

Hmm, I’ve listened to the studio version, and I didn’t hear any Auto-Tune. I heard a bit of reverb, and overdubbing so they could layer his vocals over each other, and maybe just a hint of phasing/flanging/something like that, but no Auto-Tune….?

I don’t go for that smooth-jazz leaning kind of style, but I actually kinda liked this.

  • AC

Once I got over the disappointment of Kris’s Heartless not being the same acoustic version, I ended up really liking the Itunes version- especially since i get to listen to him do the full song. I hope for his actual album, he rerecords the whole thing with just his guitar.

Anyways, I can always just buy the video of live version which was perfect to me! :biggrin_wp:

  • abbysee

If Adam doesnt win, Im going to have to whip a bitch.

You’ll whip a bitch, and I’ll cut a bitch, lol.

I love One, I mean for people who say that Adam won’t be a radio success, I give exhibit, 11. It was awesome. I love Crying too, I loved it on the show, love the studio as well. I’ve listened to it so many times.

I loved Heartless more on the show, but the studio is okay. I got Gokey’s You are So Beautiful cuz I was feeling all kumbaya and stuff, but I haven’t listened yet.

  • TKat

All Adam for me this week. Downloaded all of them.

Really liked One Live, but I FLOVE the Studio version. IMHO best of the 6 studio track this week.
Liked Crying Live (the sound mix problem just messes it up for me) and Crying Studio.

Listed to Heartless studio version, but it’s just flat and gets boring. Why did they have to autotune it to death? In any case, I passed on it cause I already own The Fray version.

Didn’t like the other three live performances very much and just listened to Apologize. I have One Republic’s Apologize already and like it better. So I passed on this.

I listened to Danny’s both live and studio versions of both songs, hoping I would like them better than I remembered. I just didn’t like them that much.

  • jlc

If Adam doesnt win, Im going to have to whip a bitch.

    First of all….. :lol_tb:

    Secondly–can I watch? :tongue3_tb:

    omg..still laffin…

  • hollygo9

Bandzilla keeps over-producing Kris’s songs. They have no concept of subtle.

  • LucyV

JohnM – Auto-Tune isn’t used solely for its ability to distort voices. It’s primarily used to correct a singer’s pitch so you don’t hear all of the little mistakes. I haven’t listened to Kris’ studio version of “Heartless”, but I think this is what Truthiness was referring to based on the vanilla-ization comment. Let me know if I’m wrong here, but that term perfectly describes my own feelings on the usage of Auto-Tune. I think it kind of kills the uniqueness and personality in a voice that makes music interesting and different. I would much rather hear true passion in a voice than the same, uninspired perfect pitch over and over again. If a singer doesn’t sound good without Auto-Tune then they’re in the wrong profession.

  • flynnsgirl

I have the complete Adam Lambert collection. I love One live, can’t understand why so many people didn’t. I think he showed the pure emotion of the song the best way he could in a minute and a half. It gave me chills watching that live. Studio version is beautiful, I think its better than the original too. But then of course I am a tiny bit biased.
Loved Cryin, both versions, except for back up singer from hell. I love mostly old Aerosmith but always thought Tyler’s “scream” was kinda annoying. Adam smoothes that out with his beautiful clear vocals. He out Tylers, Tyler.
I don;t understand some of the criticism about what kind of record Adam will make, Kid has chops, he can sing anything. He has stood out on the show, I think he intends to do it in real life too. No mainstream anything for Adam.

I really love the visual of Kris, I like Him! I like his sweet sound when he sings, I just don’t see it translating to sales, maybe I am so off base on this, but for someone to fit into the medium that is out there right now, you have to have something really extra special. On the context of the show, he does. In the context of the real world, not so much. I hope I’m wrong, because I think he personally, is awesome.
Danny, can’t even go there. I completely agree with JohnM about Danny. Its like you’re sitting in a club listening to a band and you’re having a good time and the band sounds really cool and you buy their CD they have for sale in the lobby and you take it home and it sucks. It was a “in the moment kinda thing”

  • pleazurs

    edit: DON’T BAIT.

LucyV: Auto-Tune isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t used solely for its ability to distort voices. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s primarily used to correct a singerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s pitch so you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t hear all of the little mistakes.

I know — hence the name. I’ve played around with it myself, so I know what it does. In fact, the effect that you described as distortion isn’t really distortion — it’s an increase in the effect’s sensitivity so that it snaps the signal to the nearest note so aggressively that it sounds artificial.

There are lots of ways to vanilla-ize a vocal — microphone selection, equalization, compression, etc. etc. And I wouldn’t be surprised if some of those were used on this vocal, but I don’t hear anything that sounds like the effects of Auto-Tuning.

And, in line with your (spot-on!) comments about Auto-Tune killing the uniqueness and personality, I think Kris’ expressive style doesn’t lend itself to Auto-Tune. Moreover, he’s one of three or four contestants (with Allison and Adam, probably Anoop) whose live performances showed that their pitch is almost always good enough on its own.

I wholeheartedly agree with you that a singer who can’t do without Auto-Tune should find another line of work.

  • Truthiness

Exactly. There are only a few instances where I actually prefer the studio version vs. the live one, and it’s usually where the extended version helps define the artists vision by being longer and/or the studio helps with some vocal issues. I say this for not just Kris’s wonderful live Heartless vs. the Muzaked studio version of it, but most of my faves of Adam, Kris and Allison, all sound so borrrrring when in their Auto Tuned iTunes. It’s actually when they might have had a mis-step or their song wasn’t long enough to appreciate, that the studio versions seem actually useful to me.

And let me just underline this, this isn’t just some slam against other artists than my fave Adam. I hate most of my fave’s iTunes as well because of Auto Tune. My hating Kris’s iTune “Heartless,” is because he was poorly served by the iTunes song version, because the live version rawked. Hard.

  • cookcricket

I downloaded Apologize and Heartless from this week. I also got the performance vid of Heartless. I’m starting to realize that, though I like and many time love the studio versions for Kris, he (like my fav last yr. DC) seems to generally be better live.

I agree with what Primeminister said above though, once I got over the fact that Heartless wasn’t acoustic I really, really like the studio!

I am considering Cryin’ too. I listened on the tube and liked it.

  • Tony

MJ. Did you see the 5/12 EW Idolatry video (where Slezak gave a shout out to you)? Kris definitely got rid of “bandzilla” on Heartless. Too bad bandzilla stomped his way into the studio recording. :(

That was actually some life-saving advice that they gave Kris. Maybe he was watching it? lol

  • annie487

I really like KRIS’ “Heartless” :)

you guys should check out another Heartless cover
it’s sung by Chris Mann on youtube

my sister gave me told me about it, and wow, i was blown away
    it’s really good

Have had One and Cryin on repeat since Friday. Totally different sides of Adam, but both terrific. One brings all the longing of that song out in some different and totally effective phrasing choices. I loved the performance version as well for the same reason. Cryin is just a good balls out rock ballad that he sings the shit out of. I have to say that is amazing he managed to give an effective performance last week with the sound problems courtesy of the mixing monkey’s screwing up the balance with bandzilla and the backup screachers from hell – was so bad he had to take his ear monitor out just so he could hear himself sing… anyone with less experience would probably have just crumbled into a big puddle.

I am not a big fan of the whole Mraz, Mayer, Johnson laid back stoner jam vibe that Kris seems to put on every damn thing. Don’t get me wrong – I love a good acoustic tune as much as the next person (case in point TownesVan Zandt who was THE MAN when it came to singer songwriters). But Kris is just those guys writ lite and watered down. Plenty of people like that vibe I am just not one of them. So will save my $1 towards my morning coffee.

Which nicely solves the “what kind of record is he going to make?” question.

Double record set- one balls to the wall rock, the other Feeling Good, One, Mad World type songs. Let us be able to purchase either one alone or both together.
I know it would place quite the burden on getting it done production wise, but they like to strike while the iron is hot and this would please everyone, especialy me :mrgreen_wp:

    Agreed.
The proof is in the pudding. Adam’s studio versions are fabulous!!
Kris’ weaknesses are exposed again, his songs all sound the same while Adam continues to grow and
soar!! Adam’s gift is pure gold, it translates into big sales now,and I think this will continue after AI. Kris will struggle in this area.

  • Adamdebomb

If the itunes AI versions are pulled, they can be found on most of the torrent sites.

  • koyumi

As I listened to Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s studio version of “One”, I was tearing without realizing it. I got a bit flustered because I was on the subway.
Though I am not a native speaker of English, his songs really touch me.
    I can connect him.
    That’s amazing.

  • mahrikka

I absolutely love both One and Cryin. I bought the live and studio versions of each. Adam excels both as a recording artist and performer. My growing Adam collection offers something for every mood. Adam captured my interest and spirit from the beginning and has never disappointed. I can’t imagine him not being a huge success. I know that tastes in music vary, but I truly believe Adam’s talent is special and given the right backing can one day be considered among the best.

I love Kris and his style, but I actually ended up downloading The Fray live version of Heartless instead of Kris’s.

If I could download Danny’s sing out, I would. It was the first time I really felt his emotions.

I know this is a little off topic, but I’d love to be talking about my Allison download this week. I was really hoping for an A-Team finale.

Finally, I can’t imagine ever becoming this invested again in AI. I’m exhausted!

  • KrisAllen1

I love all of Adam and Kris’s studio recordings. They are all on repeat. If im not listening to Adam then im listening to Kris and the other way around to.I think Kris sound better live.Adam sounds better on a recording.I cant get enough of One and Heartless.

  • TKat

bridgeymah, thank you! You solved a big mystery for me when you wrote:

I am not a big fan of the whole Mraz, Mayer, Johnson laid back stoner jam vibe that Kris seems to put on every damn thing. I really like and respect Kris. And I enjoy listening to Mraz, Mayer, Johnson. Give me Joni Mitchell with a guitar or piani, and I’d be content.

So why don’t I connect to Kris’ music?

It’s because there is no “laid back stoner vibe” — the hidden emotional edge that challenges us. I don’t mean that you need to be stoned to make music that I like, it’s that when Jason Mraz performs, there he is laid back, but the term “safe” never enters my head.

Kris’ music is pleasant but not challenging — there is no edge to it, it’s comfortable. In my head I understand why people like it. But in my heart, I don’t get it. I prefer music to push me — a little or a lot — but to push me, to challenge me a bit, even if I’m not comfortable with it.

I think it is all a matter of what kind of musical experience we seek.

  • Tess

A minute 40 is never enough time for Adam to really interpret a song in his masterful style. Even though I think Adam has been light years ahead of any of the other contestants (except Allison) during his live performances they aren’t quite as great as his recorded songs. With his recordings he is able to fully develop his unique talent and to display all of the multitude of enormous skills that he has and the transitions within the song have the time span to be seamless and effortless. He gets to hold the important notes, to emote the verses and soar on the choruses as well as to fit his patented glory notes into the body of the songs not at the end where they seem to be on his live performances.

I could and do listen to Adam’s recordings over and over. He absolutely has that it factor that draws me into a song and makes me beg for more. I feel that, eventually, Adam will be known for his albums much more than his singles. With an album he has the time to shine on those 10 minute songs that you never want to end.

  • Dr. Tracey

I downloaded Heartless, I agree it’s not as good as the live performance but I still like it because it’s so different than the normal ‘Idol’ song choices if that even makes sense.
Adams voice on the studio recording of One is really lovely, too bad I can’t stand the song or i’d get that too.

  • TwigLA

I’m listening to the studio version of Heartless … and I won’t say I hate it, but close. I absolutely cannot stand what AI does to these songs. It’s not Kris’ version at all, it’s way over produced and syrupy (borrowing a Kara term).

The band records THEIR version the day before the artists record the singing portion. This year to me has all been about the band.

Damb, I’m disappointed in this. I wanted Kris’ accoustic version. I hate Bandzilla.

  • lavender1960

I have not heard Gokey’s studio version of Dance Little Sister but I agreed that Danny’s voice does indeed suit TTD and I have to think that one of TTD’s other songs would have been an even better showcase for Gokey – though he lacks the sultriness that TTD has.

  • lavender1960

Is the “Auto Tune” what they use to make that futuristic sound like on Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow” and Jamie Foxx’s newest single. I imagine there are a bag of tricks producers use and I am not familiar with all of them.

In the case of the Black Eyed Peas, if you watch the video for “Boom Boom Pow”, which is the coolest video I have seen in a very long time, probably the last one was by the Peas too, they are going for a futuristic feel so to me that vocal trick or distortion works but too many people are using it to the point it is boring and annoying and it kills me when they do it to artists who CAN sing without any help whatsoever and it doesn’t really work in the context of the song.

This is probably why a guy like Jason Mraz who sounds like just him and his guitar is so popular. Some people are tiring of that overprocessed sound.

And hello no surprise then that the people who are overproduced can’t reproduce the record live without backing tracks and lip synching. I will buy the music of some of those folks but I know better to see them live. Like I would never spend money to see Kanye live. He makes interesting music, in the studio, so it belongs on an album not live on stage. It explains why many rappers and hip hoppers don’t tour much or they do in packs.

And you can tell Daughtry has been working with Nickelback – can his new single be any more overproduced compared to the stuff on his first album? Why Chris there is no such thing as overproduction says Chad and make those lyrics good and sentimental, works every time and he is not wrong. They got the formula though one day it has to expire.

I shudder to think what they will do to Adam’s voice, he is pitch perfect – he doesn’t need that overproduction – but the 19 crew can’t seem to resist. They definitely did it to Cook and Archie and these guys are pitch perfect singers. Hopefully in Kris’s case they understand the market for his songs are the anti overproduction type of fans.

People can snark on Michael Johns but he can perform his single with just himself and an acoustic guitar. So can Cook usually with his wingman Neal in tow. That is real talent. YMMV.

  • kokko

I can understand why some people like Kris songs, but to me his voice is generic and boy-band-ish. Yes I agree he has the musical sensability to re-arrange songs, and that is a talent, however, my problem with Kris is due to his limited vocal ability, he needs to “Kris-tised” every song and the result is he makes all the songs he sing sounds similar, that is why I don’t feel excited or related listening to his songs.

I would also like to disagree with the person who mentioned earlier that he realized the reason he liked Danny’s Dance Little Sister was because of the band, not his singing. Nothing is further from the truth, it is Danny’s voice that makes that song work. Can you imagine Kris tackle this song without compromising the integrity of the song? I don’t recall Kris ever successfully tackles an up tempo dance song.

Sorry Kris I am just not that into you(r music).

  • lavender1960

They did the same thing to Michael Johns’ version of It’s all Wrong But It’s all Right – the show version was brilliantly stripped down the studio version was some countrified crap. Very disappointing.

Question for the Adam fans – have any of the studio versions of his songs been disappointing by any chance?

  • weareallinnocent

Question for the Adam fans – have any of the studio versions of his songs been disappointing by any chance?

I’m not sure disappointing is the word this Adam fan would use. :-) But, ToMT was necessarily different because all the Idols were required to record to the original tracks. Since Adam’s show performance significantly differed from the original, and was such an emotional offering, the studio did pale. Good in its own right, great vocals, but very different.

The only other one that I didn’t immediately love on first listen was If I Can’t Have You, but only because the tempo seemed really slow at first, draggy even. But after adjusting, the vocals are just so impeccably impressive, it’s a favorite of mine.

I think the thing with Adam’s recordings is that his vocals are immaculate, and the longer recorded versions really allow him to capture and interpret songs more effectively. Mileage, as always.

  • Sinochick

Question for the Adam fans – have any of the studio versions of his songs been disappointing by any chance?

    - TOMT (but that’s not Adam’s fault as they had to record to the original Motown recordings)
    - I was also disappointed with the studio version of BTBW because the live version had so much “energy” (and a bit of Simon’s Rocky Horror movie extravagence) but the studio version as a little too electro – it took me awhile to get used to it.

Otherwise I love ALL of Adam’s studio recordings and have it constantly playing on my Ipod.

  • JohnM

lavender1960: Is the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Auto Tuneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ what they use to make that futuristic sound like on Black Eyed Peas à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Boom Boom Powà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and Jamie Foxxà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s newest single.

Yes — and also, ironically, Kanye’s Heartless.

I agree with you that any effect, including the extreme setting of Auto-Tune, has its place in the bag of tricks but can become overused.

  • JohnM

kokko: I would also like to disagree with the person who mentioned earlier that he realized the reason he liked Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Dance Little Sister was because of the band, not his singing. That was me, and it is the truth, because I was talking about what I liked about the song, not what you like about it. I like the band, I don’t like Danny’s singing. You like his voice and think it makes that song work. Both of those sentences are true.

Can you imagine Kris tackle this song without compromising the integrity of the song?

    Actually, yes, I can.

  • astolat

lavender1960, fwiw I like both Adam’s live & studio versions, but as a rule I think the Idol tracks all show the effects of hasty (over)production, regardless of which Idol, so the studios are almost always a little bit disappointing except in rare cases.

Those exceptions among Adam’s songs for me are Feeling Good (because that studio is just an unbelievable work of art), Cryin’ (because of the technical difficulties in live), and Mad World studio is just as good as the live version and longer.

I also love TOMT and BTBW studios because those were different enough from the live that it was like getting a second song, and in a way that makes it less of a direct comparison to the often-richer live performance.

(oops, eta to correct to original questioner lavender!)

One other note — the other thing is, they record these on Sunday, I think they’ve said, which means they have only been rehearsing since Thursday and they get two more days of rehearsal afterwards. So the songs are always only about halfway through whatever “development” they get, in other words.

  • monleo1705

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve gotten over the shock of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Heartlessà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ not being acoustic. Really, really like it now

LMAO!! I actually L-LOVE BOTH Kris’s acoustic and studio version of Heartless!! I know the whole point people loved it was cos he performed it acoustic, however i must say i enjoy how they produced his Heartless on Itunes with some bluesy and soul vibes to it!

Honestly, i have always been critical of Kris’s studio recordings and ALWAYS thought his performances live were much better e.g. Aint no sunshine and She works hard for the money. Except for Falling slowly, that was BOTH good too.
But listening to Heartless again and again and again, it practically sounds like a top hit off the chart! And Kris is ACTUALLY NOT drowned in this! Haha!

Shows me that Kris is truly growing more and more :thumbup_tb:…he deserves to win. YOU GO KRIS!!!!!

Question for the Adam fans – have any of the studio versions of his songs been disappointing by any chance?

For me, most of them, but the ones that stand our are “If I Can’t Have You,” turned into this treacly 80′s power ballad, and “Born To Be Wild.” I like electronica, but this was a bad version of it. It was cheap sounding, probably because it was cheap and in this instance, it showed. I don’t mind other studio versions, I just prefer the live version of the time. Exceptions taht I prefer/like just as much as the live versions are “Feeling Good,” because he toned down The Note and the longer length of the song managed to put what he did do, into the context of the song more. And as I mentioned, prefer his “Crying,” to clean up the upstaging howler monkey back-up “singer,” and “One,” to take out some of the mis-steps he made in the middle of the song.

I don’t like the production and sound editting of a number of the Adam studio versions, particurly “Born to Be Wild”. But I think that the studio version of “One” is brilliant. I keep replaying it.

Krisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ music is pleasant but not challenging à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ there is no edge to it

He has no edge…at all……..pleasant and bland

  • KrisAllen1

Can i bitch slap the next person to call Kris bland? Pleasant yes but not bland.
Heartless isnt a bland song choice or arrangment.

  • snood199

You may bitch slap me if you wish. I found Heartless better than some of his other performances, but still Same Old Kris.

  • julieitis

I would say Kris is subtle rather than bland. And while Adam HAS subtleties, overall he isn’t :) One person’s “edge” is another person’s club, I guess. I don’t think that it matters, really. I like what I like and all of you probably do, too :)

I really didn’t like Heartless Studio at first, but if I think of it as a whole different entity, then I like it. If nothing else just to hear him sing about his homeys.

    From the One Republic Twitter…

“Oh, and adam lambert told me backstage he had requested to actually perform “come home” the night before but the other dude sang Apologize”

Question for the Adam fans – have any of the studio versions of his songs been disappointing by any chance?

Whole Lotta Love for me. It had little to do with Adam though, but more the instrumentation — it just really, really lacked. If I Can’t Have You could have gone there, but my guilty pleasure musically is overwrought power ballads, so it worked for me.

  • linsav

Calliope – no, I appreciate hearing the little nuances in Adam’s voice on the studio versions. I pretty much ignore the music and enjoy his voice.
