Thursday Ratings: Idol Dips, Glee Rises

American Idol dipped 8% from last week’s numbers. But look at Glee! Up 47% at 9:30pm!  But I suspect Glee will be adjusted down (and Idol up) due to a 2 minute Idol overrun.  The Big winner, Big Bang Theory, was down from its last original episode on February 21.

Via TVByTheNumbers

On FOX, a 90 minute American Idol scored a 3.5 adults 18-49 rating down 8 percent from last week’s 3.8Note:  The show ran over two minutes, so both it, and Glee are likely to be adjusted in the final ratings. At 9:30, Glee earned a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating up 47 percent from a 1.7 its last episode on February 14 when it aired at 9PM.

Wow at the 14 million after 9:00pm. I guess that could really benefit the girls.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Well we’ll see how the debut of the top 10 goes next week. If it gets good numbers we have decent rating from here on out – if the cast holds up. But Daylight Savings Time is this weekend, so I don’t know.

I’m betting The Voice is going for Idol’s throat this year. They can make a real run at number 1 singing show. There’s surely an opening.

  • http://twitter.com/bluinjewin Landon Cox

Didn’t we start out with 17m viewers this year? Is there normally a drop off of that magnitude or is Nicki just frau repellant?

  • Livi2

I have to think that was the strategy behind the reveal order — any shred of suspense was basically gone after they’d announced the guys plus Janelle (not that there were any actual surprises there, either, but the predictions I saw were at least a little less confident on some of those guesses), but it meant that the favorite girls were stacked at the end of the show, where they’d get the most eyeballs.

I have to admit, while I’m mourning the absence of a proper wild card round (and thus no finals slot for Breanna, who I think would have been a shoo-in), the victory performances seemed like a great strategy to keep the  spotlight on the contestants who were advancing (I can’t think of a wild card show where the story the next day wasn’t all about who got robbed, instead of who got through), and hopefully help boost enthusiasm for this top 10.

Didn’t we start out with 17m viewers this year?  Is there normally a drop off of that magnitude or is Nicki just frau repellant?

The drop off this year is one of the worst, beaten only by Season 9 for the 18/49 demo, for the total viewer number it’s 4th worst.  It’s unlikely to have anything to do with Nicki because it wasn’t too bad during the audition, it only started dropping badly starting in the Hollywood rounds.  More likely it’s the format and the contestant selection that is putting people off.

Percentage drop from the premiere episode to the last episode before Top 10/12/13 (first number is the drop in 18/49 demo, the second the total viewer number) –
    Season 1 – 14.6%  8.9%

    Season 2 – 31.5%  32.1%

    Season 3 – 24.8%  24.1%

    Season 4 – 16.4%  19.9%

    Season 5 – 29.4%  25.1%

    Season 6 – 34.1%  26.5%

    Season 7 – 31.9%  20.8%

    Season 8 – 35.0%  29.3%

    Season 9 – 46.6%  35.4%

    Season 10 – 15.5% 3.7%

    Season 11 – 27.0% 16.7%

    Season 12 – 41.7% 28.1%

Some of the numbers are not necessarily indicative of a bad season, for example in Season 8 the number for the wild card was low because it was on a Thursday (normally aired on Tuesday and Wednesday)  It was in fact the lowest-rated episode that  season, in most year you get the lowest ratings only somewhere in the middle of the final rounds, so that number is not typical, and you can reasonably discount that season in this discussion.

i’m in UK, so don’t follow the US ratings uber closely… but (and please correct me if I am wrong)… as well as being low compared to previous AI seasons are these numbers also lower than last season of US Voice?

  • Anny_nanny

You can not compare with the numbers of the last season The Voice, TV competed with The X-Factor, but in America it is considered “it was no other alternative”.

It may not be Nikki who’s turning off people I think the hotness of Keith may be making many horny pervs realize how unattractive they are and it ruins their fantasy girlfriend relationships.

  • girlygirltoo

I believe the numbers are still higher than what The Voice did last season.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

No, I think the performance episodes of this fall’s The Voice are on track to beat Idol’s performance episode average. I guess the live rounds will tell the tale, as well as how big of a finish Idol gets this year. but still I think The Voice is going to take it if not now, very soon.

  • http://twitter.com/facenfield David Facenfield

thanks Tinawina, girlygirltoo, Anny_nanny and istersay for deets :)

  • girlygirltoo

I’d have to do back into MJ’s archives and check, but I honestly don’t remember the Voice ever drawing ratings in the 3’s. I remember seeing a lot of 2.5, 2.7 type numbers. But my memory is not the best, so I could be wrong.

However, the fact that no one in the media is saying that Idol’s numbers are lower than The Voice’s makes me think that they are still higher. I think the media would be all over it if The Voice’s numbers were better.

(but again, I could be wrong, lol)

You have no concept of how the male mind works.

This is the dumbest possible excuse for a terribly put together season.

Excellent ratings! How low can it go?

  • http://twitter.com/Quu3 Q3

The Voice ratings are non-comp to Idol because it is Fall/new programming vs. Spring/reruns.

Unless Idol picks up some momentum, I think The Voice can take #1 this Spring.

  • sweetmusic

My only interest in this show at this point is akin to watching a beached whale die.

  • BonnieDee

I know I’ll be switching to The Voice.  And it’s totally because of Nicki Minaj and how she’s ruined this show.
