EARLY ATTENTION ISN’T EVERYTHING ON ‘IDOL’ (SPOILERS)

Spoiler warning: Don’t read if you don’t want to know who goes home on the March 28 episode of “American Idol.”

If you walked up to a random person with photos of all the “American Idol” contestants and asked them to put names to faces, I’m betting most couldn’t get 100 percent. People who’d seen the show could probably identify Sanjaya — even pre-Mohawk, and maybe a couple other singers. But if they’d seen the show even once, they could probably recognize Chris Sligh…

‘Idol’ Internet scheme demonstrates meaning of fans’ votes

In the sixth season of “American Idol,” the question on the mind of Simon Cowell is the same as that on the minds of many Americans: How long can Sanjaya Malakar possibly last?

Malakar may go down in history as one of the worst singers in Idol history, with consistently off-key renditions of everything from Stevie Wonder to The Kinks. In addition, the 17-year-old’s long hair and teenage wardrobe may impress young girls, but not the judges. Cowell has even said that he will leave if Malakar wins.

However, despite his childish demeanor and lack of singing skills, Malakar is not only surviving the competition, he’s thriving. Last week, fan voting showed he was not even in the bottom three contestants out of 11.

No one is sure how Malakar remains on the show. One popular rumor speculates that votes pass through a call center in his native India, where operators could be skewing the results. However, there is an even more unlikely answer – Howard Stern…

    ‘Fro-Gone Conclusion
On ”American Idol,” curly-haired Chris Sligh goes home after failing his Police exam, but Sanjaya and his magic hair live to torture us another week

Apparently, entry into the American Idol top 12 should come with a warning label: May cause shortness of breath, loss of rhythm, and general deterioration of charm and charisma. Because that’s certainly what seemed to have happened to Chris Sligh on his journey from pre-semifinal front-runner to eventual 10th-place finisher: a kite-without-a-breeze nosedive that ended with his ouster from the competition tonight…

Rapper/producer Jones to stop by 2 Live Music in Akron on Saturday

…Nevertheless, actual careers in the entertainment business have been jump-started, though longevity still remains to be seen. First season winner Kelly Clarkson is off to a very good start, with two multiplatinum albums and numerous awards, but so far that puts her a little bit ahead of Laura Branigan and Debbie Gibson in the realm of three- or four-hit wonders.

Winning is almost always better than losing, but the show’s history reveals that winning on A.I. is relative, as the remaining cast members know that by making it to the Top 10, they have at least ensured a place on the Season 6 tour. The recent tours haven’t been nearly as elaborately staged or the guaranteed sellouts the first few were, but it still gives cast members more exposure to fans and potential business partners…

“American Idol” misfit Sanjaya Malakar defied his detractors last night to escape the chop on the top-rated TV talent show.

Hard to read the words? This would surely be a nightmare for “American Idol” fans who believe that the show judges talent. In a year with a few top-notch performers and several of the borderline singers that “Idol” turns briefly into stars, wispy 17-year-old Sanjaya Malakar stands out for his breathtaking hair and his relative awfulness: the absurdly quiet voice, the dance moves out of middle school, the logic-defying endurance…

    ‘American Idol’ – Chris Sligh-ted

It was inevitable à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Chris Sligh, who did alright on a few numbers but sucked pretty hard on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Every Little Thing She Does Is Magicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ last night, got the boot on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ tonight.

He seemed like a good candidate to be this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s underdog, but of course a bushy-haired juggernaut by the name of Sanjaya stopped that in its tracks. Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d think Sligh would have the chubby person vote (surely a formidable bloc of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ voters) and the evangelical Christian vote (he went to Bob Jones University, natch), but even those folks have been swept up by Sanjaya fever.

Annual forecast predicts 3% revenue increase for nets

Broadcast networks are looking at a “much stronger” 2007 upfront than last year, Merrill Lynch analyst Jessica Reif Cohen said Wednesday in her annual upfront forecast report.

Cohen predicts a 3% increase in total revenue for the broadcast networks this year to $8.7 billion, up from the loss of about $300 million the six nets reportedly absorbed last year, mostly due to the WB-UPN merger. For the Big Four, the expectations are for 4% total dollar amount and cost-per-thousand increases. The optimistic prognosis is based on a tighter-than-expected scatter market as well as the 2008 presidential elections and Summer Olympics.

ABC, on the strength of its successful move of “Grey’s Anatomy” to Thursday, is poised to lead the upfront, with Fox, which is riding the “American Idol” tidal wave, also in a good position, Cohen writes. She forecasts 5% revenue and CPM increases for ABC, which is poised to collect $2.1 billion, while her predictions for Fox are for a 4% CPM and 6% revenue increases for a total haul of $1.8 billion…

‘Idol’ chatter: Following the sixth season of ‘American Idol’

…LOWLIGHT: Hmmm. Did anyone else notice that Gwen Stefani seemed to be lip-syncing during her Wednesday performance of “The Sweet Escape” with Akon? For shame, “Idol,” if the visiting star was allowed to use backing tracks or guide vocals. Even with an elaborate dance number, Stefani should have been held to the same standards as the contestants. Who’s next on the show, Ashlee Simpson?…

    Yamin scores well with debut

…Little did Yamin know it wouldn’t be long before others would feel that way about him. Just ask my niece, Alexis. He’s her favorite Idol. She knows all things Elliott.

Yamin finished Season 5 in third place, edging out Chris Daughtry. Daughtry went home the week before, despite being lauded a heavy favorite.

At the show’s finale, Yamin tore up the stage with Mary J. Blige, proving he could hold his own in the company of greatness.

Yamin continued to woo audiences with his raw, soulful presence on the “American Idol” tour, even helping Daughtry belt out a Nickelback track.

I witnessed this and can honestly say that I don’t believe Daughtry could have pulled it off without Yamin carrying him…

Half Past Forever Feeling Effects Of American Idol

It’s not easy being sent home, but idol has had a huge impact on Chris Sligh and his former band, Half Past Forever. The band just released its first album and the buzz is growing.

Half Past Forever’s first single, “Know,” off their debut album, “Take a chance on something beautiful” is already burning up the screen, the computer screen that is.

Their video on YouTube has already gotten tens of thousands of hits and now you can get their album on amazon dot com. You could also say that Cole Edmonson had a big hand in making the album sound as sweet as it does. He told Fox Carolina’s Lidia St. Mark, The reviews have been really good. I’m happy with the way it turned out.”…

    Sailor survives another à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ vote

Phil Stacey had his second close call on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Wednesday night, told by host Ryan Seacrest early in the show that he was one of the weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s three lowest vote-getters. After approximately 14 minutes and eight secondsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ worth of commercials, contest results, a Gwen Stefani appearance and more assorted tension-building, Stacey and viewers finally learned he will sing again next week.

American Idol: Chris runs out of magic

Sanjaya Malakar lives to try out another hairdo next week as Chris Sligh got his plane ticket home tonight.

Chris’s exit was no surprise considering his butchering of “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic” last night but he certainly had more talent than at least a couple of people who remain.

Phil Stacey and Haley Scarnato joined Chris in the bottom three. Phil’s lack of star quality will keep him there until he delivers the performance of a lifetime. It is Haley’s appearance in the bottom three that is most encouraging, however. Maybe America is finally ready to put her out of her misery.

Next week’s theme is the songs of Tony Bennett which is akin to standards night. I cannot wait. Standards always seem to bring out at least one knock out performance. Remember Fantasia’s “Summertime” or Chris Daughtry’s “What A Wonderful World” or Katharine McPhee’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”? …

American Idol: Sanjaya might win this thing

Sanjaya Malakar winning American Idol is a worst-case scenario for FOX. It would single-handedly undermine any credibility the show has as a legitimate venue for talent. FOX, therefore, is in an interesting situation right now. Do they milk all this Sanjaya mania as long as possible and hope that voters eventually come to their senses? Or, do they try and guard against the possibility that he might actually win the whole thing, and try to bury him, PR-wise? I don’t know what FOX will do, but for those questions to even be relevant, we need to believe that Sanjaya has a chance to win American Idol this year.

The scary thing is, I actually believe this could happen….

Tuesday’s Idol: What You Didn’t See

    Wednesday’s Idol: ‘Bye Bye, Curly’

…But Chris went instead, true to Simon’s prediction when asked by Ryan Seacrest about who would be the next to go (“Bye bye, curly,” he said in true Simon form). A brief explication of this voting result:

    1. Chris was never as pretty or leggy as Haley.
    2. He was never as tall or lean as Phil Stacey, who joined them in the Bottom Three.
    3. And he was probably never pleasant enough à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ outwardly, musical-personality pleasant, I mean. Instead he was pretty good with a deadpan quip. Ryan Seacrest called him “one of the most clever contestants we’ve ever had.” On Idol, this translates as: “Please step into this crate so we can hammer down the lid and ship you home ASAP.” …

American Idol – Was Chris Sligh’s Cut a Fox Conspiracy?

After correctly predicting that, beyond all odds, Chris Sligh would be ejected from American Idol, I’m feeling a little invincible in the prediction department tonight. But there is an uneasiness that accompanied that little burst of adrenaline you get from being right against the odds; the fact that part of Chris Sligh being voted off American Idol would be connected to a vast conspiracy within the halls of FOX to have Sligh cut for cavorting with their enemy, VoteForTheWorst…..

Sanjaya is sticking around on American Idol

Another week with Sanjaya Malakar on American Idol… I am in shock!?#! I have a feeling it was the hair. He is creative, but he can’t sing. Not only has he made it to the top 9, but he wasn’t even in the bottom three.

Is this kid a publicity genius or something? His tacky faux hawk from Tuesday night’s show has drawn tons of media attention. Ryan Seacrest even referenced it during the show’s intro, and when then he appeared on stage wearing a faux hawk wig.

Whether people are voting for him as a joke or because they are seriously Fanjaya’s, he’s got some star power. I guess he’ll have to figure out another celebrity profession though, because he surely won’t make it as a singer.

    American Idol: Bye-Bye Curly

The crowd didn’t seem to appreciate Seacrest’s opening ode to Sanjaya. I, on the other hand, was almost wetting myself. Maybe people don’t find Sanjaya to be a joke — for many reasons.

The Ford people were wise to use Chris Richardson as the star of their commercial. He definitely is one of the most handsome contestants. The other choice would be Blake (even though his shirt was hideous), but he probably has more weeks to star in commercials….

Sanjaya Malekar’s success may signal the death of American Idol!

American idol contestant Sanjaya Malekar seems to be in news for all the wrong reasons, whether it is his being supported by DJ Howard Stern, or his horrendous Mohawk hairdo on the show and now it is feared that he may help to bring down one of the most profitable franchises in history.

Why worst croonerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voice may topple American Idol

…This year, however, with American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ratings down by about 10 per cent, and fans complaining of a lack of talent, Sanjay à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the shy, androgynous and elaborately coiffeured son of a classical Indian musician from Seattle à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ has found himself a serious contender to win, largely thanks to a subversive campaign to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“vote for the worstà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

If Sanjaya does win, critics argue that the show will never be taken seriously again. Simon Cowell, Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s judge, has already threatened to quit if Sanjaya wins the contest.

It would be hard to underestimate the effect of Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s decline on American popular culture and the music industry. Not since The Ed Sullivan Show, which ran from 1948 to 1971 and introduced the nationà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s youth to Elvis Presley and the Beatles, has a television show managed to dictate musical tastes so effectively.

Yet the producers of Idolalso run a music factory as ruthless and effective as Berry Gordyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Motown à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and have sold 20 million CDs since the show was first aired in 2002.

USA Today calculated that Idol makes about $900 million ( £576 million) a year from sales of adverts, albums, merchandise and concert tickets. Many of the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s contestants have gone on to win Grammy awards, one even an Oscar…

American Idol: Behind the scenes of TV’s biggest hit

It’s pure TV gold. With 41 million viewers glued to their screens every week, ‘American Idol’ is the biggest show on Earth. Its message? Anyone can be a star. And for the small band of British producers behind the scenes, it’s turned into the richest payday imaginable. Ed Caesar meets Simon Cowell and Co on set in Los Angeles

…Despite the strength of Idol’s ratings and the enduring appeal of the recording artists it has discovered, 19 has occasionally encountered rough waters. Two years ago, Fuller sued Cowell, American Idol’s biggest star, for ripping off the show with his own talent contest, The X Factor. Fuller and Cowell’s dispute was eventually settled – Cowell kept The X Factor, signed a  £20m-a-year deal to stay with American Idol until 2009, and kept a larger share of the show’s earnings. Fuller kept his main man, signed a new deal with Fox, and took a share in The X Factor.

The media made much of the spat, but Cowell was consistently phlegmatic. Indeed, he was quoted at the time telling Fuller to: “Lighten up… We can both get our shows made. Let’s enjoy it.” It’s the sort of thing you can say when you’re just about to sign a contract worth  £100m, and testament to the fact that both Cowell and Fuller have used Idol to become richer than Croesus. They are not the only Brits to have done so – the Idol headquarters, at the CBS Television lot in Hollywood, reverberates to the sound of bright English vowels.

Cowell, it seems, has no qualms about displaying his wealth. When the “talent” enter CBS by the back entrance, they are forced to walk past the chief judge’s gleaming Rolls-Royce Phantom, which is parked outside the door of his personal “Star Waggons” trailer. Not that it seems to bother anyone – not only is everyone on the lot disarmingly chipper, their Persil-white teeth seem to indicate they all use Cowell’s dentist…

Costly foreign shows pulling plug on profits

Rising costs for buying popular U.S. shows like American Idol and Desperate Housewives may be helping Canadaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s private television stations win the ratings war, but theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re interfering with the profit picture.

His Sligh strategy wasn’t enough for ‘Idol’ voters

…Okay, so the show’s still not strictly a singing competition, as evidenced by Sanjaya Malakar’s continued presence — and avoidance of the bottom three for the second week in a row — but if you can’t knock it out of the park vocally, you have to impress people in other ways. Sanjaya does it with his silly hair choices, Haley with her flesh-baring outfits, Blake with his beat-boxing and modern arrangements. Sligh tried to do it with strategy. He was a student of “Idol,” had clearly made note of what made contestants stand out and advance. He had an enormous mop of curls like Justin Guarini. He nicknamed his fanbase the Fro’ Patro’, both mocking and copying Taylor Hicks’ Soul Patrol. He began last week’s performance in the audience because that had gone over well with previous contestants like Taylor and Josh Gracin, but he looked completely uncomfortable with the human contact. Everything he did, everything he said, seemed in some way calculated…

‘Idol’ time: winners new and old

…Morrison’s performance fell between the two. She left the judges speechless with her rendition of “Fighter,” by Christina Aguilera. She started her song by sitting on the steps of the stage in a black hat but quickly got the crowd involved when she rose to her feet.

Her performance of Beyoncà ©’s “Listen” in the first round was equally impressive.

“It has been two years since I heard you sing and I thought you were great then,” said judge Dan Reynolds after Morrison’s first song. “You are even better now.”

Judge Dennis Kraniak then asked if she had tried out for American Idol. Morrison said she was cut after the first round.

“Jennifer Hudson (who didn’t win American Idol) just won an Academy Award (for ‘Dreamgirls’), so I hope the same happens to you,” he said.

Chad Durbin, a three-year performer in the competition, was a fan favorite with his entertaining performance of “Be True To Your School,” by the Beach Boys.

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck…

I can’t say that I’m an ‘American Idol’ fan. However, my boyfriend is a fanatic and I’ve been exposed against my will to many episodes this season. Happily, I missed this week’s shows.

A story in today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution about Sanjaya Malakar’s seemingly endless 15 minutes of fame helped convince me that my gaydar is not in need of a tune-up:

Sanjaya, who is half Indian and half Italian, spent four years performing with the Hawaii Children’s Theater and, as noted on the show, likes to hula dance. During high school, he performed with the Total Experience Gospel Choir in Seattle.

One popular theory for Sanjaya’s staying power is that pre-teen and teenage girls love his harmless, vaguely effeminate looks and are providing enough votes to keep him around.

Maybe Lance Bass could give him some coaching….

    Stylist transforms contestants into Idols

At its heart, “American Idol” is a makeover show.

With one or two glaring exceptions (we’re looking at you, Sanjaya) talent is center stage. But fashion does share the spotlight.

And it always has. Since the beginning, wardrobe stylist Miles Siggins has helped the final 12 singers morph a signature look.

Siggins is also the founder of streetwear labels Stussy and Gimme5, so he’s fluent in hip. How appropriate then that we should interview him via e-mail before the season started and then again just before the show’s return to the big stage at the Kodak Theatre.

Q: How much time do you get with the contestants to determine what outfits would be best for them?

A: We have two hours per contestant each week to shop. We start thinking about outfits once songs have been chosen.

Q: Can you describe the process?….

    American Idol 6: Week 6 – Results
A Dose of Reality by Raul Burriel
    Published: March 29, 2007

Last night Gwen Stefani proved that artists will find any reason to appear on the runaway juggernaut known as American Idol. “Pop Week” meant that Stefani “coached” the contestants through their songs. Given that the first time the contestants met with Gwen was on the same night they performed, the benefits of her coaching were questionable.

Removed the bold completely since it wouldn’t turn off but I’m referring to the last line of the quote…….does anyone know if that is actually true or just hyperbole?

I’m really sorry Chris is gone, but honestly Steve, you were who I was thinking about when I heard the results. Glad to hear you’re doing okay this morning!

Simon’s comment about Curly made me laugh considering Haley and Chris were both standing there with curly hair. He couldn’t be wrong!

  • Lu

MJ – Have a blast and tell everyone hi for me!

Steve O – Hugs to you. Chris will be fine. I remember that “punched in the gut feeling” I had when Elliott was eliminated last year. It was painful.
Hang in there… Only great things in store for Chris I’m sure. He got all the exposure he needs for success.

  • Little Debbi

Hey Bobbi. Good morning. 9 more days.

MJ – Hope you catch you’re flight.

I’ll be driving 3 hours from Indy today with my husband. Can’t wait to see Taylor, my home town and family.

    Should be a great time.

Chris##, Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not just his look- his roots are (admittedly) mainly from the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢60s-à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢80s, and he doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like to compromise, either. I believe his CD suffered as a result of this. If he went as pop as TPTB wanted him to- he mightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve sold more copies; if he had been able to execute HIS vision for it- heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d have probably sold more and/or got critical acclaim for it.

Hey Former–with all due respect, I see it a little bit differently. Most of the songs on T’s first CD were not written for him or even with him even in mind. I don’t think T had much artistic input into this first CD. I do feel he has a great “sense” of what he does best but, like most of the idols, was not allowed the opportunity to make these decisions. In one of his recent concerts, he made the comment that when he first heard JTFTW, he wasn’t “hip” to it but then learned to like it.

He is going to be a very difficult artist to place because he is so different and really has no “competition” for what he does. (I saw the same problem with Clay Aiken. What do you do with a “Barry Clay Aiken Manilow”?)

Taylor is a wonderful cornucopia of complexity and contradictions. Unfortunately, we live in a society of quantity versus quality! We’ll just have to wait and see….

“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sorry, our tweenie pop stars were still masculine.”

Bobbi, I couldn’t agree more. Actually didn’t get all fangirly about anyone. Just listened to good music IMO. First album ever bought Moody Blues Days of Future Past, followed by Eagles, Elton John, Loggins & Messina (I guess I did have a crush on Kenny Loggins). Oh well, thank god a lot of these guys are still making music and touring.

Looking forward to Tony Bennett next week though. At least there will be good songs.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

You must be younger than I am, Deb, because those artists definitely came along after I was a “tweenie.” For example, Peter Noone from last week is whose picture was over my bed when I was 10 or so!

I am really looking forward to Tony next week too. I sat next to him in a deli once when I lived in NY. LOL! Such a gentleman….just a lovely person and an outstanding singer, even at 80.

  • squishy

Tony Bennett is :king_tb: and a class act!

Will be a great week next week. Next week’s theme will REALLY separate the great singers from the not so good ones.

    Good morning! :)

Steve-o, hugs in your direction. Sligh didn’t deserve to leave last night, but I’m sure he’ll do well in the future. :)

I’m looking forward to seeing Tony Bennett on next week’s show. His recent duets album is fantastic, and I’m continually amazed at how good the guy’s voice is for his age.

To all the MJers going to Taylor’s concert this evening, I hope you have an awesome time. Enjoy the music and the company – and we’re expecting recaps!! ;)

(And my apologies to the Night Crew for not saying goodbye properly before leaving chat last night. Gabbly kept freezing up on me and although I planned to try logging in later, I got a nasty headache; I took an Advil and crashed early.)

I definitely can understand the Sanjaya thing too. I was a pre-teen in the 70′s as well and I used to have a crush on Michael Jackson who wasn’t (and isn’t) the most masculine man in the world as well as Donny Osmond who had that long hair with the bell bottom pants (as they all did in the 70′s) and Keith Partridge. I also had a crush on Peter Brady of the Brady Bunch.

It would make my day if Taylor sang a Chicago song. There’s so many to choose from. He would knock Make Me Smile out of the park.

Have a great day everyone. Off to Chicago!!

Bobbi, you are younger than I am.. Elvis came on the scene when I was a tween. Saw him in New Orleans in 1956.. I was 12.

I had the best of both worlds, emeralgem. My brother and sister are 12 years older than I am, so I grew up on Elvis, Everly Brothers and all the others of that time period. When my time came, I had British Invasion and Motown. REALLY blessed with good music!

  • Little Debbi

I guess I’m not talking about being a “tween”. I graduated high school in 1977. When I was a “tween”, I was actually listening to whatever the adults did (Eddie Arnold, Englebert, Tom Jones, Astrud Gilberto, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra). I never really had a “tween” crush. Then, in hs, I really didn’t know what the performers even looked like. I just bought and listened to what I liked based on the music. I went to see Lindsay Buckingham last week and remembered that I loved Fleetwood Mac, but used to think he was a girl because of his higher pitched voice. lol

pah, I hope Taylor sings some Chicago for you. They are one of my all time favorite groups from the 70′s. Going to put my Chicago Greatest Hits cd in now.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Emeralgem, I saw Elvis twice. At his first Madison Square Garden concert, in the second row and then at Nassau Coliseum a few years later. The last one was sad, because he was sick and bloated……but wow, he could still sing. What a voice.

Deb, I graduated college in 1975. LOL! You’re a young one. ;) But, I heard tht music too….we had many generations of music in our household. First record I bought? I’m actually embarrassed to admit this but it was Gary Lewis and the Playboys. I still have it! LOL!

  • Little Debbi

emeral and bobbi. Actually you guys made me remember. We had a 50′s music faze when I was in jr high. Went to see Frankie Vali & the 4 Seasons and all the “oldies” group shows in NYC back when it was safe for a bunch of 13 year olds to take the train by ourselves.

Have they ever done a 50′s night on Idol? I think that would be fun.

Top 50 night from what I remember

    Taylor – Not Fade Away
Bucky – a different Buddy Holly song (ETA: Oh Boy I think)
    Chris – Walk the Line
Mandisa – the song that starts I Don’t Hurt Anymore (that might be the title).
    Kellie – Walking After Midnight
    Paris – Fever
Katharine – Come Rain or Come Shine (one of my favorite performances by her)

Can’t remember what Elliott, Ace, Kevin or Lisa did off hand.

OK, Taylor Hicks sells out area gig, but his singing lacks winning zest

…Only now, with his run on the show over, Hicks has to do more. And, unless his ambition ends at playing fairs and motel lounges in a couple of years, he cannot simply confine himself to oldies. So we get Taylor Hicks, who aims to be modern with old-school flourishes. And ends up being boring.

Even during Idol, Hicks more often than not seemed like a far less interesting singer than runner-up Katharine McPhee. While she may have raised eyebrows (and lost older voters) with some curious performance decisions, she had a greater vocal range and a riskier approach to songs than he did. I’m not knocked out by her debut album, either, but I feel as if there’s a real singer lurking in it. Hicks, in sad contrast, has long since emptied his tiny trick bag.

I am laughing so hard right now I can hardly breathe. That is literally the first media piece I’ve EVER seen in which Katharine was called more interesting than Taylor. More talented, a better singer, prettier, sure. But NEVER more interesting. Thanks for the laugh, Lisa B. :-)

FYI, Elliott is also #11 on the R&B album chart!

All this Sanjy press this morning is making me dizzy. If he wins, Idol is done. There’ll be a season 7, but ratings will drop (more) and it will go the way of other once hugely popular reality shows. It’s a shame because for so long, no one took the show seriously. Then, with the success of Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry, et al, it seemed to gain respect in the industry. Sanjaya winning would erase all that good will and set the show back to square one.
    He’s got to go.

  • bean99

Hicks, in sad contrast, has long since emptied his tiny trick bag.

I’ll defend Taylor here. It was a medium size trick bag. :laugh_tb:

  • tinawina

Have a great time MJ! I’m so jealous.. Chicago is a GREAT city! And you get to see Taylor there. BOO! :wink1_tb:

Time for an AI prediction-filled mind dump:

Sligh left last night just like I thought he would. I’m not happy about it, because he was one of the more interesting people to me. I predict Sanjaya will make it to anywhere from 4th to 6th place. America’s not turning on him until they feel it’s time to get serious, and that won’t happen until it’s down to the real contenders: Blake, Melinda, Lakisha, and Jordin. And he may knock one of them off (Jordin, maybe?) before folks snap out of it. When he takes out someone people feel had a real shot of winning all of a sudden it won’t be so cute anymore. Then it will be bye bye Sanjaya.

Haley and Phil are out next, unless Gina or Chris R have a really bad night. Since next week is standrads, I would guess Chris R is the most vulnerable, but I wouldn’t be suprised if Gina drops the ball either.

According to DialIdol, Ricky at Idol forums, and other spoiler sites, Melinda has consistantly been at the top of the voter list every week, She’s starting to track just like Taylor last year. So unless a really stong number 2 emerges that serves as a perfect anti-Melinda (Blake maybe?) I think Melinda pretty much has it in the bag, internet complaints about predictability notwithstanding. All that would matter if her fanbase wasn’t so strong but it is, so I think Melinda is our winner no matter what she does.

    Anyway, what say you all?

  • LB2

But according to Ricky, the top 4 (Melinda, Blake, Lakisha, Sanjaya)aren’t too far apart. Lakisha and Sanjaya only have a difference of a hundreds between them. Melinda and Blake thousands. Melinda only carried 14% of the vote according to him. So I don’t think she has a sizeable lead like Taylor did last year. And we’re only on top 9 week. A long way to go and the tides may turn.

  • bean99

I’m not so sure about Melinda, Tiawina. A lot depends on where fans of departed idols gravitate to. She may have the most votes but there’s no telling by how much. She also has the danger of being the expected winner which may turn some voters off. Nobody ever said that about Taylor last year, in fact many of us kept expecting him to go home every week.

  • SEXYGIRL

Bean99, you must really like Taylor.. You seem to spend a lot more time talking about him than even your favorite..Just an observation..

  • SEXYGIRL

I’m not shocked that Chris is gone but I am disappointed. I still feel he was the best male vocalist. I wish him all the best..

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

If Melinda wins, I think she might easily be the most purely talented vocalist to win AI (closely followed by Kelly), but surely the least interesting. She may be leading the votes every week just like Taylor, but there was always an element of surprise with Taylor–what will he do? Will he dance? Will he start in the audience? Will he completely spazz out? Or will he just give a really nice, subtle vocal without the histrionics? IMO Melinda has absolutely NONE of that. Which admittedly won’t stand in the way of her win, because Carrie was kind of the same way, but even she turned in a surprise every now and then (like with “Alone”).

But will she sell? Of course, as a Taylor fan, I’d say the answer is “if you love Melinda, and YOU want her album, who cares,” but it’s always interesting to analyze. Carrie’s country, a genre that in its popular, mainstream form has become so watered down and pathetic that Kellie Pickler gets to perform at the Grand Old Opry and Rascal Flatts is the top-selling country artist. Female country singers break down for me into Type 1: Pretty but Bland (Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Shania Twain) and Type 2: Twangy and Quirky (Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McIntyre). Carrie fit nicely into Type 1 and she’s selling like hotcakes. I’m just not sure if Melinda would sell at all. How would they market her? I think if she wins it could turn out to be like last season, where all the effort is pumped into someone like Chris R., and Melinda is just kind of left to forge her own path. Hell, maybe she can tour with Taylor. :-)

  • JJ

Bean99, you must really like Taylor.. You seem to spend a lot more time talking about him than even your favorite..Just an observation..

You noticed that too???? there is a reason I love you.

    (closely followed by Kelly),

Really??? She has less of a note than Blake.

  • tinawina

But according to Ricky, the top 4 (Melinda, Blake, Lakisha, Sanjaya)arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t too far apart. Lakisha and Sanjaya only have a difference of a hundreds between them. And weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re only on top 9 week. A long way to go and the tides may turn.

Good point, yes. But she’s been consitsently first, and historically that person usually just continues to pick up votes as the contest goes along. All they have do is to hand in a solid performance week after week. Think Carrie Underwood. She had a backlash of epic proportions after being an early favorite and was clearly TCO by TPTB. She was called boring too. Even with tremendous buzz going to Bo, she still won. I think Melinda’s going to be like her, unless Blake picks up major steam and Melinda starts faltering performance wise. But I do agree that at this point, if anyone can beat her it will be Blake.

Edited to add: Kat, we think alike! She’s Carrie/Taylor part 2 to me. I competely agree about her ability to sell records. I think they would have to go the Fantasia route. Don’t even try for pop sales, just do a straight up adult R&B album but more jazz influenced (as opposed to gospel influenced like Fantasia), then throw in a couple of crossover ballads with inspirtational themes. Then hope she ends up with critical acclaim and sales in the 1-2 million range.

Bye Bye, American Idol Chris Sligh

Song choice was a killer. I liked Chris all along…from the Hasselhoff joke that helped win the judges hearts, right on through the shout-out to Dave. Now, I’m unconvinced it was a shout to the votefortheworst guys…because of the early Hasselhoff comments…but who knows?…

…Taylor Hicks and Bo Bice have been ruined by the producers of this show, and I hope they make come-backs eventually. I don’t know what they were thinking cleaning Taylor up and trying to make him into a straight, big-band backed vocalist. He belongs fronting a charismatic blues-rock group or something…and Bo belongs with whatever is left of Lynrd Skynrd.

Well, Foxy, I agree with you. I at once suspect Idol will not let a Sanjaya win happen and that they may have no choice but to let it happen. But Idol has shot its own self in the foot. The audience is more and more savvy to things like pimp spots and choices for the final 24 not choices for the best, but for those who may please various demographics and provide interest for the show. The whole process is not legitimate, so why should the winner be. Over the course of reading this blog I have become more and more disgusted with Idol and this year they just screwed up big-time. Hundreds of thousands of applicants, some who never even got to audition, and what do they come up with. Not only that, some of the singers are of a seeming higher and higher level of professionalism. They need to draw their line in the sand at a different place. We all know the entire process of selection reeks, so if the odor brings them down, they need to find themselves a new deodorant and take a refreshing shower. Some really good, even the best, contestants last year came out of nowhere or almost nowhere. The premise is flawed this year and so the ending will be.

Off to wash comforters. It’s spring, sort of.

bean99: Nobody ever said that about Taylor last year, in fact many of us kept expecting him to go home every week.

But that’s because you didn’t care for him. If you’d followed any of the on-line predictors, you’d know that he was in it for the long haul.

    1) Lots of buzz in the press – check
    2) Lots of buzz on the internet – check
    3) Lots of fansites with huge numbers – check
    4) Consistently safe on DialIdol – check (#1 all but one week)
    5) Lots of interenet search queries – check
    6) Never on the seal (bottom 2/3) – check

You might not of thought he would win, but you would know he wasn’t going to leave until deep into the competition. He had, as MJ says, people. And he had people in general interested.

So, if you want to win any office pools this year, follow those kind of predictors (instead of who you personally like) and you’ll do well.

Yeah, because Taylor fans live only in a fantasy world of their own making.

Sorry to burst your bubble, bean99, but MTV called Taylor’s win on March 15 last year:

Who is the one to beat: You heard it here first: Taylor will win “American Idol.” He defines unique, his love for music is genuine and his voice is so soulful. Even those dance moves are charming. If only they let him play that harmonica. Chris is solid too, but he’s not as one-of-a-kind. McPhee-ver and either Paris or Mandisa will round out the final four.

AI is showing us that their crys of “this show being a singing contest” is as fake as Simon threats of quitting if Sanjaya wins. This a show that it all anout pre-packing their singers to sell. They will hype them to no ends convincing the general public that their marketing product is the best singer on the face of this earth. ONLY if they get who they want. I seriously want to see how far Melinda and Lakisha gets because I betting my money that AI wants either Chris or Blake to win. They will convince us, week in and week out, that they have the best vocals despite what we hear.

Oh my God! I’m imaginary!!! And here I thought all along that I was a flesh & blood, living-in-the-real-world person. My world is askew! :laugh_tb:

For what it’s worth, I knew Taylor would win the minute I saw his audition, and I never had watched the show before. It was just a feeling.

I had the same feeling about Tami Gosnel this season. I think that may be why they didn’t put her through to the Top 24. There was just something about her and it wasn’t mainstream.

They do (and I would add Jordin to that list with Blake and Chris) and at this point, I’m not so sure it wouldn’t be the best thinng for everyone. AI would get their winner that could impact top 40, and Melinda would get to make a record that is truly about who she is as an artist, without all the crazy sales expectations.

I think AI is boosting Blake, Chris and Jordin right now to see who can build a solid fanbase, and once that person does they will quickly drop the other 2. By the time we get down to week 5 or so, I’m pretty sure TPTB will turn on one or 2 of them.

Someone on etrain posted this from Buckymania… interesting –

Neat tidbit: During a discussion about the Idol contract, Bucky said that 19′s option on Elliott Yamin was not so much dropped as refused–Elliott apparently let Simon Fuller know that “his (Elliott’s) interests would be better served elsewhere.” (Seems to have worked out pretty well for Elliott, looking at the charts!)

bean99: Kirsten, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t remember anyone in the real world (non-SP) thinking that Taylor would win at this point in the competition.

Perhaps that just means that you have friends that have the same taste in music as you. Believe me, the SP are not phantoms. They are real people. You don’t get the majority share of 63 million votes if only imaginary people vote for you.

I’m not saying your friends and you were wrong to like Daughtry. I’m just saying that if you want to win the office pool or look clever in the “who-will-go-home” game, you’ll pay attention to those factors which meant Taylor wasn’t going home until deep in the competition.

There is a website (which I can’t find right now called Your Journey has Ended) that actually makes boot predictions on many of the factors I listed. They accurately predicted that Daughtry would get booted around final 4 (and Taylor would win) based on those factors. Daughtry wasn’t getting a lot of buzz (comparitively) at that time and DI clearly indicated that his support was soft (and a meh performance or early performance slot would send him home). You see the same with Chris Sligh this year.

Again, I’m not trying to re-hash last season. I’m just pointing out how “shock” boots rarely are all that shocking if you are paying attention. Lu has mentioned that she has won quite a few bets with her co-workers by betting that Sanjaya will not go home (probably a safe bet for at least the next few weeks).

  • http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna

Metta – Doesn’t look good for me on Boston for a couple of reasons. Email me (foxydonna@earthlink.net)

I still think Melinda will be in the top two, and I’d put my money on Blake as the eventual chosen one. He’s got a lot going for him on many levels, and I can see him as a pop success. Chris R would have to struggle to differentiate himself from JT, and Jordin, maybe yes, maybe no. Plus a Melinda/Blake finale would draw in the most diverse audience possible, increase ratings, and no matter which one wins, they both get deals and everyone’s happy.

This is assuming, of course that Sanjaya gets tossed before then. I agree that once it gets down to the top 6 or so, fans of the others will step it up and this VFTW/Stern faction won’t be as significant. Right now, they may be the most organized bloc. John Stevens went to sixth place remember, and Nikki McKibben made it to third (oh the horror) beating out Tamyra who had been TCO the first season.

Did you read what I said? It wasn’t some insullar fan-site that was posting it’s own articles about Taylor that indicated he was going to win, it was the BUZZ about him EVERYWHERE. He was in the general press. He was the number one searched Idol on the internet. He was on the entertainment shows. I even saw him mentioned in Political Editorials in newspapers in Canada.

Now, if you weren’t paying attention to Idol at all, I can see why you missed all this. But, this would be like me saying “In the real world there are no deserts because it rains all the freakin’ time in the Pac Northwest”. If I don’t take the time to read about the world outside my little rainforest, I wouldn’t look all that knowledgeable claiming that it rains everywhere in the world all the time.
All I can say is that it rains where I live.

Again, this goes to predicting the outcome this year. If all of my friends think Phil will win but he doesn’t have any of the predictive factors that indicate that the rest of the world agrees with me and my clique of friends, I’d lose money betting on him.

  • JJ

You know, fine, change the freakin’ topic to Carrie or Bo or Clay. It’s the same freakin’ topic. It has NOTHING to do with Taylor. NOTHING. Nobody I know in the real world thinks Bush should be president of the US, but guess what? Enough people elsewhere do, so he is. That doesn’t mean they are wrong. That doesn’t mean that he cheated to win. And guess what? Even though I didn’t know a single person who thinks Bush should be president, everybody I know knew he was going to win that election because we read the polls/editorials etc.

There is a difference between what my friends in a little area of the world thinks and what the majority of people think. That’s all we are trying to say. A lot of us here are fact based and I’m sorry you feel ganged up on when you tried to use anecdotal evidence to prove a point.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Actually, bean, I have a question for you not–not an “attack” but you did actually raise an interesting point. You said:

I just meant the real world by way of the general public, not the fan world.

I hear this all the time with regard to ALL the Idols, so I wanted to get everyone’s thoughts: is this a false dichotomy or no? I think it is. But if you disagree, at what point in time does one move from being a member of the “general public” to being a member of the “fan world?” Just using Taylor as an example (because he’s the one I’m most familiar with), is it when someone starts rooting for him? Voting for him? Voting for him regardless of the strength of his performance? Googling him? Visiting Taylor message boards? POSTING on Taylor message boards? Sending nasty E-mails to people who don’t like Taylor? Is there a bright-line rule, or is it more of a “I know it when I see it” type of deal? Because it seems like under the false “real world vs. fan world” dichotomy, ANYONE who is a “fan” automatically and instantly doesn’t count. bean, just using what you said as an EXAMPLE (not an attack), you said that no one in the real world predicted Taylor would win this early in the competition. But what makes someone not part of the real world? If they say “oh, I really like that Taylor Hicks, he’s gonna win,” are they now part of the “fan world”/Soul Patrol and therefore removed from the equation? That just seems really…silly.

One last word regarding Melinda and her status as the top vote-getter. It’s great to analogize her to Taylor, but IMO it’s not a true analogy yet. Taylor gave a pretty crappy performance on Country Night, but still led in the votes. IMO that was when people started thinking “wow, this guy’s really got momentum.” I want to see what happens if/when Melinda stumbles and gives a less-than-stellar performance; then we’ll see if she really has a loyal fanbase, or if her votes are coming from people who vote by performance, not out of loyalty to a favorite.

No Bean there’s nothing wrong with you thinking Taylor is not ‘precious’, I don’t think the world revolves round him either.

  • SEXYGIRL

Putting all jokes aside, who here really felt Chris S was going to win? Even though he was the best male vocalist this season, there was no way he was going to win. If they did not know what to do with Taylor who had a lot more stage presence and charm than Chris, then what would they have done with Chris. Some may argue that Chris voice is more modern but if that alone was the problem then he should be on his way to signing a lucrative recording contract as I type.

I think Chris lacked what Sanjaya has a lot of, CHARM. Sanjaya, love him or hate him, but you can’t deny, he is cute as ever and has that charm that will have you liking him. Even when all of his stage performances come across like high school recitals. That charm can take him very far if AI does not shred every ounce of pride left in him. That charm will enable some to look at him and give him a chance because he CAN sing. He can also be forgiven because he is an arkward teenage boy who has a lot of growing to do. Chris, on the other hand, is 28 and unfortunately, he lacked that charm that makes people say “you weren’t on your game this week but.”.. Especially, when he DID have that bad week. He did try being charming with his dry sense of humor but it started to unravel real quickly.

One cannot deny that if there is any real comparison that could be made between Taylor and Sanjaya is that they both had CHARM in spades. It seems everytime the TPTB tried using Taylor and Sanjaya weaknesses against them, it only seem to make people love them more. Taylor with his quirky dancing and gray hair. Sanjaya with his lack of stage maturity.

Singing along will not carry you week in and week out. As we’ve seen when one of our favorites have a bad week. Let’s not kid ourselves, it takes more than a great set of lungs. AI is a visual arena. People tune in to listen and watch and to make up their minds based on both. BUT, it’s that little something that can make the difference between one’s favorite sitting on the couch for another week and hearing Chris’s “home” song..

  • Stefunny

I know knew he was going to win that election because we read the polls/editorials etc.

Now that’s interesting b/c I also read tons of stuff and the outcome wasn’t clear to me…at all. When an election hinges on one or two states, I’m not sure how bold the writing on the wall was to begin with.

Not everyone is as invested in AI as those on this blog. A casual viewer is not going to be reading EW, MTV online, MJs and things like that. There is a real possibility that they are in the dark about most inner workings of AI….so bean99 being unaware that Taylor was all that at this stage of the game seems completely plausible. Cut her some slack.

Its not really about Taylor, though, is it? Taylor is incidental. Its about the Soul Patrol. The Soul Patrol won the voting contest last year. To bring it back to this season, Sanjaya’s success in the voting contest throws into harsh relief the ugly truth about American Idol, the TV show.

and btw, people are picking on bean — it happens whenever someone slights Taylor or the SOul Patrol in any way.

  • Kirsten

Can’t you understand that everybody’s reality is different and that’s why anecdotal evidence is poor evidence?

I decided to check out Season 5 of Idol because I saw 4 mentions of him in seperate articles in one day in the newspaper (and this was before the voting rounds even started). That’s my reality, but I won’t generalize it to the world.

Research showed though, that the world was talking and buzzing about Taylor/Bo/Carrie/Clay/Ruben/Kelly etc.

So, if you want to win the betting game, bet on research, not anecdotal evidence (best also for when one is picking which medical advice you should take. Doctors generally know much more than your Uncle Bob).

Kirsten–not only did I vote for him, I am a HUGE Pres. Bush supporter. So…now you know one!

As for Taylor…I have watched this show from Season 1, Bean (the very first note), and Taylor has been the only/most polarizing contestant they have EVER had! I, too, knew he had this competition in the bag from the moment he and the camera made eye contact! I wish like hell I COULD live in a dream world! I think that is why I adore Taylor so much…he takes me away from the real world to a world of PURE JOY!

  • hs

Kirsten, with all due respect, anecdotal evidence is that America loves Taylor because he got the most votes. We don’t know how many people voted for Taylor, just that he got X number of votes.

Its a limited sample of americans, and the results are based on people who watch TV, watch game shows, bother to vote, vote multiple times, etc.

  • rher

Anyway, back to school-girl (or boy) crushes and Sanjaya. I was kind of different or perhaps because I loved horses, but I had a big-time crush on Lee Majors from Big Valley. I used to watch it just about everyday after school at 4 pm.

My daughter (3rd grade) told me the girls in her class had a good old laugh about Sanjaya and his horsey-doo yesterday. I asked her if she thought he was cute and she said “no way!” You go girl!

I didn’t think that Chris S could win but I am sorry to see him go this early. I thought he sort of threw in the towel this week. He had no energy.

Neither my daughter nor I can get really excited about anyone this year. I mean, we even routed for Kelly Pickler and Paris. Everyone seems partially comatose this year and I just can’t get excited. Snooze-fest delux.

Taylor has been the only/most polarizing contestant they have EVER had!

I suspect that Sanjaya holds this honor nowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Not in a million, billion years! Not even CLOSE! In fact it will be very difficult I feel for any season to measure up to Season 5, except Season 1. Both were “magic”.

  • emeralgem

Nobody ever said that about Taylor last year, in fact many of us kept expecting him to go home every week.
    ____________________________

This one of many never expected him to go home every week..

  • Lisa B

Well I think a fortune could be made by AI in the marketing of Sanjaya.

  • Little Debbi

Hi sexygirl. How are ya? I do not see any CHARM at all in Sanjaya. As a matter of fact, I leave the room for a bathroom or cigarette break when he comes on. I totally don’t get his appeal to any age group whatsoever. I will not tune in just to see what he does next, etc. I’m sure he is a nice kid, but I just don’t get it. Not knocking anyone who likes him, just stating my opinion.

rher, we have the same taste in men. I loved Lee Majors. An embarrassing crush I had was on Dan Haggerty (Grizzly Adams). I guess I liked the mounten men type. Michael Landon anyone?

  • Boulder Soul

Right now it feels like Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m being ganged up on.

Sounds more like one can dish but can’t take syndrome to me.

Now, how about that Sanjaya. LMAO.

  • hs

Chrissey, how about the Clay/Ruben fiasco?

I didn’t think Taylor was polarizing last year. I think the issue was more that the contestants in general were more talented and diverse and drew strong fan support, so the season was more competitive.

  • tinawina

Poor bean99. This did get a little heated, didn’t it? Well, if it makes you feel better, this Taylor fan thought your original comment was funny, not offensive. No worries here, buddy. ((((hugs)))) Me likey the snark. :thumbup_tb:

Changing the topic…I think Chris R is the chosen one. Bottom 2 even though he probably wasn’t there. Pimp spot though he arguably wasn’t in the top 5 performances the other night. Featured in the commercial and made to look more masculine than he is.

    Thoughts?

Okay, this post is intended to be ABOUT generalizations, and not to be A generalization in and of itself…so I think I’m well within the rules here. If I’m not, someone tell me and I’ll be happy to delete it.

In my limited and anecdotal experience :-) , many Taylor fans are more sensitive to being generalized because Taylor fans are constantly stereotyped by the media as stupid old women. For those who do fit the age range of the stereotype, I can’t imagine how it feels to be constantly told by the media that if an artist’s popularity carried by your support, it doesn’t count, because YOU don’t count. And as someone who DOESN’T fit the stereotyped age range, I get frustrated that the media doesn’t acknowledge that Taylor has fans like me. So when something is said about Taylor’s fans not being in the “real world,” or when the Soul Patrol/Taylor’s fans is/are just offhandedly dismissed outright, yeah, I would think it would touch a nerve with a lot of people.

On the other hand, I am sure that some of Katharine’s fans get riled up when they’re constantly referred to as insipid pre-teens. I don’t see this as much in the mainstream media as I do on the Internet, but I’m sure it’s not anymore fun for them than it is for me.

  • Boulder Soul

Yu make one diss regarding Taylor and 15 posters dump on you.

So. Who really cares what others say about said “diss”?

    I miss SUNDANCE. lol.

This is funny LB2, and not in a sarcastic way! I’m really laughing!

On that note, I see what you’re saying, but I don’t like the idea of Chris R being TCO. I really hope that’s not it.

Kirsten, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t remember anyone in the real world (non-SP) thinking that Taylor would win at this point in the competition.

I don’t know if everyone thought he would necessarily win, but I think most people thought he would go very far.

Simon consistently predicted that Taylor, Kellie and Chris would go the furthest. Also Simon said early in top 24 that he had received the most “positive feedback” from the general public about Taylor.

I know that I thought he was safe. He was my favorite, but I threw votes to Bucky and Elliott before I ever really voted hard for Taylor…I couldn’t hardly vote for Taylor anyway because I could not get through.

I ALWAYS thought Taylor was safe, even after the abysmal “Country Roads”. I was on a non idol related message board, and every one of the ladies on that board liked Taylor best…they were somewhat worried after County Roads, but I remember telling them, “there’s no way Taylor’s going home, his fanbase is too large.” I had never once voted for him at the time.

Seriously, when someone is at the top of dialidol every week and never hits the bottom three, you’d have to be ignoring the obvious to think they were not a serious contender for the title.

  • squishy

I saw a Blake interview for the People Magazine shoot on the local Fox channel in Los Angeles and he was asked which Idol he admired the most. He said “Chris Daughtry, because he didn’t win yet he is very successful”. I suspect that Blake thinks that he may not win (ie Melinda, Lakisha, or Jordin may instead) yet he may follow Chris’ footsteps and get signed any way, front a band, and be successful.

I suspect this will happen as well. The question is is it better for Blake to LOSE and still get a record contract similar to Chris Daughtry’s or is it better for him to be the next American Idol? :ponder_tb:

  • rher

Well, Debbi, you out-did me with digging the beards!

Has Sligh been interviewed yet? I’m speed reading through the posts and links. IMO, this week was just about the worst week of idol ever. Even Gloria E week wasn’t as bad. No wonder Simon spent most of the evening looking down.

One more thing: Please don’t rehash what happened last year. If you are going to talk about past contestants KEEP IT IN THE HERE AND NOW.

Hey how ’bout that Taylor tour? I’ll be seeing him in concert tonight!

    Just like that.

  • SEXYGIRL

Its not really about Taylor, though, is it? Taylor is incidental. Its about the Soul Patrol. The Soul Patrol won the voting contest last year. To bring it back to this season, Sanjayaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s success in the voting contest throws into harsh relief the ugly truth about American Idol, the TV show.

YES you’re right. It’s not a harsh reality thou. It’s what it is. You like a person, you vote for them. Simple as that. Every single year TPTB chooses someone for fodder to help the show along. If you watched you can see who those people are. It does not mean they cannot sing or don’t have talent. IMO, it just means they are easier targets to help build ratings until they leave. AI has always had a bit of a Vaudeville like style to it. It’s never been just about singing. The singing part of the show only becomes important to push their agenda along.

IMO, AI is about AI. Some of These contestants enter this singing contest at the risk of being humilated and shredded of every once of their pride and dignity by a show and it’s fans, that’s us. They are then left to try and rebuild their IMAGE as much as they can after being made a fool of week in and week out. Then make the best of whatever spotlight they gained from being on the show. Just ask TAYLOR, the DRUNKEN WEDDING DANCER from last season. Why would anyone want to put themselves through such humnilation, it’s beyond me. I guess for some it’s the passion of their craft. And for others, it’s the instant fame AI dangles like a carrot in their faces. I am glad someone one understood how the game was played from within and beat AI at their own game. Even thou they were not the show’s preferred “chosen one.”

AI was the one who claimed it’s a singing and voting show. They can’t change the rules when they don’t get the results they want. As a matter of fact is suppose to be the American public voting. If they now want to use Sanjaya as a way of showing us what the show is really all about, then so be. American spoke last year and eventually America will speak this year. Whether they like out come or not..

  • Boulder Soul

He said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Chris Daughtry, because he didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t win yet he is very successfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . I suspect that Blake thinks that he may not win (ie Melinda, Lakisha, or Jordin may instead) yet he may follow Chrisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ footsteps and get signed any way, front a band, and be successful.

Or, he may be playing the game and pandering to fans of little d (TM). :)

  • LB2

I’m reading the other boards (TWoP and scary boards) and they have posts saying Taylor said Blake was his favorite. I remember reading this as well but does anyone have the article it was mentioned in? It was a while back when I wasn’t as invested in the show or Team Plaid.

  • MaryS-NJ

One last word regarding Melinda and her status as the top vote-getter. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s great to analogize her to Taylor, but IMO ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not a true analogy yet. Taylor gave a pretty crappy performance on Country Night, but still led in the votes. IMO that was when people started thinking à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“wow, this guyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s really got momentum.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I want to see what happens if/when Melinda stumbles and gives a less-than-stellar performance; then weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see if she really has a loyal fanbase, or if her votes are coming from people who vote by performance, not out of loyalty to a favorite.

I’ll bite. I’ve been wondering about this myself.

Intially, I thought Melinda would get the Elliott edit this season which would ensure constant mild praise and an eventual booting in the top 5 somewhere. However, it looks like she’s getting the Daughtry edit as the presumed front running who gets nothing but praise for her singing, and only the mildest of criticism from Simon. Either way, it looks like she’s being set up for the moment that she doesn’t quite bring it or can’t break out of her mold.

I think this is likely to fail, if that the intent. Since you mention Taylor, I’ll add that Melinda and Taylor share the following traits (ymmv):

    - Vote-leaders almost every week (so far)
    - Great talent to connect with the emotional core of a song and then connect with the audience
    - Maturity and a well-defined musical identity
    - Likability* (*this is obviously relative)
    - Humilty when faced with the judges’ critiques
    - Not conventionally beautiful/handsome (according to “pop” standards of beauty)
    - Not “hip” sounding (as in what’s playing on Top 40)
    - Appeal to an older and racially diverse demographic
    - Professional musicians for years before going on Idol
    - From the South

The differences between them (besides race and sex):

    - Melinda is not polarizing in the way Taylor was
    - Melinda doesn’t appear to have the same dedicated internet fanbase that Taylor does
    - Melinda didn’t create the initial buzz that Taylor did
    - Melinda doesn’t (as far as I know) have any of her own music out there; Taylor does
    - Melinda’s voice is almost universally praised; Taylor’s is not
    - Melinda has been called “boring” despite her vocal perfection; Taylor was not called boring although he was called a lot of other things
    - Both have charisma, but I think Taylor has CHARISMA

I think it will be interesting to see what happens when/if Melinda has an off night. I think the audience is likely to be forgiving because she still has a lot of goodwill. I don’t think her support is as soft as Lakisha’s because Lakisha doesn’t seem as personable to some. In the end, I think it may well depend on how well she adapts to themes that are outside her comfort zone. Taylor was pretty good at mixing it up.

hs: Kirsten, with all due respect, anecdotal evidence is that America loves Taylor because he got the most votes. We donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know how many people voted for Taylor, just that he got X number of votes.

With all due respect, that is a SOMPLETE Straw Man argument. I never once claimed that “America loves Taylor because he got the most votes”. Not once. Not anywhere. I would never make a claim such as that because I know it’s not true. The VAST majority of Americans do not even watch the show (only about 30 million of 300 million, so about 1/10th) and much of the viewing audience don’t even vote.

I have only attempted to point out how one can predict how deep a competitor will go in the competition based on general buzz and other predictors.

I merely used Taylor as an example because he is a good example of that (and somebody mentioned that they thought each week he would be going home). It’s an example. In retrospect, I should have used Clay or Ruben or Bo because it seems like Taylor is a bit too polarizing to use as an example for anything.

many Taylor fans are more sensitive to being generalized because Taylor fans are constantly stereotyped by the media as stupid old women.

The thing is if you read the reports or cellcert postings of those who attended his concerts, you would realize that this stereotype is based on SELECTIVE watching.

Yes, its true that there are a lot of middle aged women in his audience ( ave. age mid 30 to 40 ), but the audience is DIVERSE, ranging from teens to 90 year olds ( I kid you not ), both male and female.

Wait a minute, did Taylor sing Country Road out of tune or was it just song very flat. That made it crappy. Wow, talk about the level of standards from one season to another. This season’s crop of singers just into their 7 week of singing, including the top 24, have sung all out of tune, Sanjaya, Chris R. and Blake. Before the music, week in and week out, Chris S, and just plain bad at times, Phil..If Taylor singing one or two songs flat is the worst he did, no wonder he won.

Here’s hoping all will be forgiven if that’s the worst that Melinda does.

I know there are Bush fans out there and I respect that. I just live in a very granola town in a very granola province in a fairly granola country, so Bush fans are thin on the ground here. I won’t pretend to think that I know best about politics because I’ve voted for some people that ended up being HUGE liars who made a HUGE mess of everything, so I meant no criticism by saying that I knew no real world who supported him. It just means I live in a homogenic place (which is why I used that scenario as an example).

I don’t have to agree with everything somebody thinks to like them (just ask my friend who hates chocolate…mmmm….more for me)

Now, I have nothing against stay at home moms (my mom was one), and I might choose to be a stay at home mom for a few years myself (I don’t think I can make that decision until I have kids), but I’m an educated person, and God help me if I ever degenerate into one of those mothers who can talk about NOTHING BUT motherhood and children. I guess when someone says “Taylor is a bar band singer and nothing more” I don’t see that as an insult, since I go to a lot of bars and hear a lot of awesome singers, and I’d much rather that THEY were famous than a lot of the ridiculous pop artists out there today :-)

  • Kirsten

lu: Sounds to me like 19 was interested in Elliott and Elliott wanted something different and that was that – people agreed. Pretty much what Bucky implied.

I seem to recall the lawyers amongst us saying that such a scenario is possible. Although 19R probably has the right to make an offer to the contestants, the contesants don’t have to take it. Otherwise, 19R could offer you 1 penny and make you do 40 albums for them. Contestants do agree not to accept any deals from other labels for a set period of time (45 days after the finale, I seem to recall), but that’s it. In that time, 19R can do their best to convince you to sign with them, but you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to or cannot come to terms.

What Bucky says sounds like it could be true. I cannot fathom why Sony would sign such a lucrative deal with Elliott and create a new label just for him if they weren’t very interested in doing business with him. And, if they were that interested in doing business with him, I could seem them having had offered him some sort of contract when they had sole access to negotiate with him.

Plus, Bucky has leaked lots of juicy stuff in the past.

It’s the same here. Even the candidates who tout themselves as being “real” are no different. The M&G in Green Bay was quite interesting. Fun for me to meet/talk with Taylor but even more hilarious to watch the other individuals attending with me. WOW is all I can say.

The musicianship of Taylor and the other seven on stage with him is so enjoyable to watch and be a part of. Every single one of them gives the impression that there is no where else they would rather be. We should all be so lucky to have a “job” like that.

    squishy,

You may be confusing the AI contract with indentured servitude. It would be highly unethical and undoubtedly unenforcible to demand that TV show contestants sign a contract which states that the contestant is bound to the producers but the producers are not bound to the contestant. It would never stand up in a court of law. The contract may stipulate a time period within which a contestant may not contract with another entity should the producers excersize their option to offer a contract, however that time period would necessarily be of fairly short duration to avoid being deemed oppressive by the courts. Say a short time after the close of the tour as any performer signing with a separate company while representing AI on tour could be argued to “harm” AI’s financial interests. After the tour is over, no reasonable “harm” can be argued.

While the AI contract may be very restrictive, it cannot possibly be unending.

Also, we have certainly heard news of late that indicates that Mario may not have been completely honest about his reasons for leaving AI…hmmmm.

Just want to let ya’all know I just got back from Target. No I did not go and compares season 5 idol CD counts or hide all of the Kat CDS behind NOW19 CDs. I went and bought 8 pillows and I’m feeling chipper. I got fluffy ones for the girls and I bought the firmest for me so my hits can be bedazzling.

    LisaB,

Will do a full recap later – I am back to work and time will not allow.

Tuesday in Green Bay was just a great day for me….won $250.00 on a penny machine at the casino, saw my son (he is a freshman at the campus where the concert was), attended the concert with a great friend and then had another day to look forward to here in Milwaukee.

The ushers in GB were a downer, though. They would not allow anyone to stand or take pictures of any sort. They actually took a camera away from the girl sitting next to me, but allowed others to snap away all night. I turned off my flash and got a few pictures myself. Finally during the encore, my row (third row) decided we were going to stand and dance and we did. We told the ushers “no, we’re not sitting down, this is an E N C O R E” and its what we do. They didn’t bother us after that.

PLEASE, everyone, allow MJ to have fun today….she has earned it many times over.

Interest in mommy stuff and intelligence is not mutually exclusive.

Oh, I know that…I’m just kind of scared that it WILL happen to me…like, I’ll walk into court and start to give my opening statement, but that all that will come out of my mouth is a dissertation on the merits of Huggies vs. Luvs. :-)

I was actually reading something the other day where the author said that the most defensive mothers on the planet are former high-powered career women who choose to stay at home. I thought that was interesting.

Actually, I’ve always wanted to get a masters’ in theology. I’d love to be able to take off a few years when my children are young and perhaps pursue my degree then. I’d be at home a lot, it would afford a far more flexible schedule than a 9-5 job, and I’d feel satisfied on the hoity-toity intellectual end of things.

I have no idea why I’m talking about any of this. I don’t even have a boyfriend right now.

omg, this is amazing. Paula Cole is amazing. This is probably one of my favorite Kat performances ever. I love the acoustic feel and the guitarist is really good. Also, you can see Daughtry’s cover of “sunday bloody sunday” on that site too. I listened to about a minute and clicked away quickly. they shamed U2. what a horrible cover. But everyone should get over there and see Kat. Really good. Especially towards the end Kat’s voice gets a raspy feel to it that i’ve never heard from her before.

    LBB, a girl?
Hot Damn! I knew it! I knew it! I called it from the very beginning. You’ve been outed, lol.

Regarding Chris Sligh. I was really really surprised. Haley definitely deserved to go. And Sligh was actually interesting. Will the boring people just leave already! God damnit I don’t want to sit through Haley and Phil another week when I could have been laughing at Sligh’s horribly uncomfortable banter with Ryan and the judges.

I sense that somewhere in Chicago MJ’s finger is hovering over the keyboard, ready to stop daily chat any minute now.

Switching back to Season 6, i did a quick newstand perusal of nexts weeks People Magazine with the big Idol cover story (it’s a foldout cover so not all of the top 10 fit on the cover.) Here are the two facts that I found the most interesting:

    1) Everytime Sanjaya gets onstage he feels like he has to pee.

    2) Phil Stacey is a big fan of the Spice Girls.

Do you think if Sanjaya would wet his pants onstage it would increase or decrease his popularity?

For the love of all that is holy (no pun intended), do not attempt to get a masters while your children are small. You will be sleep-deprived and frazzled, and in no condition to write 20 page papers every 10 seconds while plowing through 2-3 chapters per textbook per week. Not to mention the thesis. Oh lord, don’t do it too yourself! LMAO!

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Okay, I think the melisma at the beginning is stupid (YOU ARE NOT CHRISTINA AGUILERA SO JUST STOP IT), but this was a lot nicer than everything that is on Katharine’s album.

I think she started out a lot better than she ended, though. In the beginning I actually felt that she was really feeling the song (a first for Katharine), but then she lost it. Starting getting melismatic and shouty and that was about it for me. She couldn’t quite keep the emotional momentum going, but at least she’s getting better, I will give her props for that. Oh, and where you heard “raspy,” I heard “out of breath.” YMMV. :-)

I still think her voice is a little cutesy at times, and I still think that Katharine herself is an insipid, immature twit and quite possibly a big bitch, but she’s definitely better at this type of music than she is singing Sherman Oaks-princess-style R&B.

First of all. Your NAME gives away the gender you intended to project. If you wanted to remain androgynous then I would have suggested another handle. Also, I inquired about your gender before because I had a feeling that you were a woman. Don’t ask me why, it was just a hunch. Your posts just seemed feminine. And people aren’t obsessed with genders on here at all. I just think people don’t appreciate being fooled. I have asked you before what gender you are and you told me you were male. So it’s not that we give a shit. It’s just that we don’t like liars all that much.

According to this article, each of the 10 finalists was required to enter agreements exclusively with 19 Recordings as recording artists; 19 Merchandising for advertising, endorsements, sponsorships and merchandising; and 19 Management for the management of his or her career. All this was entirely at the option of the 19 companies, save for the winner, who was guaranteed this result.
    http://dir.salon.com/story/ent/feature/2002/09/18/idol_contract/index.html?pn=3

My understanding of that paragraph is that the Top 10 finalists are required to sign with 19R and can’t refuse unless 19E decides to release them from that portion of the contract.

I have recently read an article that this was extended to include all Top 24 Idols. I am still looking for that article.

  • Metta

Dave – Why so many pillows? Are you bringing them to the Taylor concert? Lost here?

Dave is under the delusion that MJ, Sarah, and Baxter will throw on some teddys and pillow fight with each other for his titillation.

I agree. Totally. Except I don’t think she’s a twit. But that kind of music is sonwriters music. Kat isn’t really a songwriter yet. I think with time, she might learn, like Christina did. But it’s not surprising the genre she’s chosen. She said from the beginning that she wanted to be a top 40 artist. And her favorite singers are Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera. I think her voice fits more with Paula Cole like material but if the girl wants to be like Christina she should.

Well – I don’t know. All I know is what Bucky said and it makes sense to me. It’s not the first person I’ve heard this from who is closer to Elliott than the average bear. :) If you think about it, it makes total sense. I think AI was going to try and turn him into Michael Buble II and that doesn’t appear to be anywhere neat the direction that Elliott wanted to go. There are contracts but they are written by people and people can negotiate and change contracts… it’s done everyday. It’s not hard for me to believe at all that 19 and Elliott were able to have an amicable parting of the ways.

  • dave

LMAO. Dave, I am begging you, please throw your parachute-like panties at Taylor!

I’m afraid to find out if those might be the ones he likes. :cheese1_ee:

Elliott’s doing great. Things worked out just the way they should for him. He’ll be an inspiration to this season’s contestants.

Lu – You and me at an Elliott concert in the near future! Whoo!

  • squishy

No, what happens at the end of the tour is that if 19E does not want to pick up a Top finalist’s contract and sign him or her to 19Recordings, then that Idol has the option to sign a recording contract elsewhere 3 months after the tour is ended.

19E is not going to be so dumb as to let an Idol finalist who they want to sign regardless if they win or not go and allow them to sign elsewhere after they put all that money and time for them being on the show for them to go and shop around for a recording contract elsewhere.

  • Lu

Wow these Season 6 guys are SUPER HOT. Now everytime I see Sanjaya I have to think about this. With guys this HOT, it’s amazin we’re not over Season 5.

  • Metta

Re who the last idol standing will be, we have to take into account who will pick up the fans/votes of those voted off. If Melinda and Blake are the last two, which of them is more likely to get the votes of, say, the Sanjaya fans?

  • SpenserJ

No, what happens at the end of the tour is that if 19E does not want to pick up a Top finalistà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s contract and sign him or her to 19Recordings, then that Idol has the option to sign a recording contract elsewhere 3 months after the tour is ended.

Okay, with all due respect, no one on this board is privy to the contracts, or the negotiations between 19 and the contestants. So, everyone is just speculating here. It is perfectly reasonable that someone has an opinion on this matter that differs from the above, because no one actually knows. It is impossible for any of us to be absolutely 100% positive about the way this stuff works after the show.

  • squishy

    Lu,

Maybe Bucky isn’t lying. Maybe they changed the contract so that an Idol can refuse to sign 19Recordings even if 19E wants them too. That article is from 2002, thus the contract may have been re-worked to allow more freedom for the Idols although various articles have said that because of the Clay Aiken lawsuit, the contract has gotten even more stringent and “lawyer proof”. But who knows. It is possible.

The bottom line is that Elliott may have gotten the best deal out of all the Idols. Peace :cool2_tb:.

Here is a link to the podcast of Bucky’s interview. The discussion about Idol contracts is about the 13 minute mark of the interview. He just basically says that Elliott called Simon Fuller himself and said he thought his interests were best served elsewhere.

    Carolina,

I did read the post. I read an article recently that stated that 19E can sign any of the Top 24 (it used to be Top 12 but may have been changed after Mario Vasquez dropped out) if they so chose cuz it is in their contracts. If 19E wanted to sign Elliott, they would have signed him. If I remembered correctly, I think one of the producers said that in the article. I will try to find the link.

squishy, would it be a good move for tptb to sign someone who has told them they don’t want to work with them? I think not!

Hi all — I’m posting my favorite Tony Bennett duet with Stevie Womder (seems weird, sounds wonderful) on a song that was a huge for both of them separately. And for those who didn’t catch it on another thread. Mr. Benedetto is still the bomb, in my book:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMStRERJNsM

And here he is with KD Lang, a singer I love — listen to those beautifully sustained notes, the great diction, the meaning in every word— a master class, folks:

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5164930628041535382&q=kd+lang

Just In Time — work it, Melinda!

I Left My Heart In San Francisco — with soul, from LaKisha — could jazz it up too

For Once In My Life — Blake, this could even stand some beat boxing!

Smile — awww, Jordin — what a sweet tune for her — or, hmmmm, Sanjaya?

Shadow of Your Smile — only Melinda or Lakisha have the voice for this — if you wanta get Haley the hook, give her this one to sing..

I Wanna Be ARound — it’s sort of a psycho-revenge tune — so who else but Phil?

That’s too bad. She’s be a phenomenally better singer and performer if she took herself and her music more seriously, instead of building a career atop photo shoots and capitalizing on her bulimia/weight loss. I just might have to become a fan :-)

BTW, k.d. lang’s cover of “Black Coffee” is exquisite.

To Soul Patrol and Interested Parties,

Someone posted that HDD listed JTFTW a few days ago at #20 on the AC charts, well it seems Billboard has followed suit in its chart as well in its HOT ADULT CONTEMPORARY charts. JTFTW has jumped from #25 last week to #20 this week :

    http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/charts/chart_display.jsp?f=Hot+Adult+Contemporary+Tracks&pageNumber=Top+11-20&g=Singles

But note — the relatively unpromoted Kim Locke’s single is now #13 on the same chart !! Impressive.

Do you think if Sanjaya would wet his pants onstage it would increase or decrease his popularity?

It seems that no matter what he does, he’s gonna advance. He could go out on stage with his hair in pigtails wearing short shorts, pee his pants and howl, and he would get through. It doesn’t matter. Yowlllllllllllll.

However, should the miracle occur and he be elimination, his votes probably won’t go to anyone because the only reason a lot of people are voting for him is to screw up Idol.

  • radname

i’d rather be friends with someone who can make fun of themselves then someone whos full of themself

  • squishy

I do not think Sanjaya will win but I think he will outlast Gina, Haley, Phil, and possibly Chris R.

  • Sagie

Kat sounded better then typical except for the bird twirls or communicating with the aliens sounds she was making. I just cracked up at her scratching her breast while on camera during an interview for the net!

ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d rather be friends with someone who can make fun of themselves then someone whos full of themself

Eh, but considering the nasty, passive-aggressive, and often downright mean comments Katharine has made in the press regarding fellow Idol contestants, other performers, etc., I’d put her in the “with friends like these, who needs enemies?” category. She strikes me as the type of “friend” who will go around saying bitchy things about you, and then when you take offense, get all giggly and tell you to “lighten up” and “stop being so serious.” I’d rather have a friend who was full of themselves, as long as they treated me and others around them with the proper respect and decency.

BUT…I believe you and I have had this discussion before, so maybe we should can it before we give poor MJ an aneurysm :-)

  • eyin

I am a he. Just thought I’ll put it out there. And I know, nobody gives a shit. LOL

Just trying to lighten up the mood here. :D I’m happy, I got some good work-related news today. I want everybody to be happy too.

  • jersey

How about everytime someone senses tension here, type “Have fun, MJ!” maybe it will break the tension and it will brighten Mj’s day! :laugh_tb:

  • AFan

Radname, why do you keep starting up Taylor vs. Kat stuff? It’s so pointless. I don’t like Taylor either. It’s way more fun making fun of him then trying to pit him against Kat. That opens way to many doors. We’re outnumbered here.

  • jersey

Afan, are you going to meet everyone tonight? If so, have a blast!

  • http://blog.syracuse.com/idolthoughts/ foxydonna

I do not think Sanjaya will win but I think he will outlast Gina, Haley, Phil, and possibly Chris R.

Sadly, Haley has the “hot factor” going for her (and Kat’s hair), which may result in Gina going before her. Phil too maybe, then Haley. That would put Sanjy out in sixth place. I really don’t think Chris R will go before Sanjy, though. The real shocker would be if he outlasted LaKisha or Jordin, and that is still a possibility. I think Melinda and Blake are safe, for now at least.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s way more fun making fun of him then trying to pit him against Kat.

I like good old fashioned Taylor snark–pure, unadulterated, salt-of-the-earth Taylor snark. Particularly any Taylor snark that ribs him for his “I am an artiste” attitude. Bring me more of that and I will happily join in. :-)

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Haley has the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“hot factorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ going for her (and Katà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hair), which may result in Gina going before her. Phil too maybe, then Haley. That would put Sanjy out in sixth place.

Is it weird that I really don’t think that Sanjaya is any worse than Gina, Haley or Phil on a lot of nights? I mean, Sanjaya can sing in tune, he’s just a weak performer. I think Haley is equally weak, to be honest. And Phil and Gina have been off-pitch more often than Sanjaya has. He’s taking all the heat, but frankly, I don’t think Gina and Haley deserved to be Top 24 or 12 any more than he did.

Good point Afan. And, I’d like to add that MJ has repeatedly requested TODAY, that the fan wars not continue here on HER BLOG. So, out of respect for our blogmistress, and keeping in mind that she is in Chicago attempting to have a GOOD TIME, I suggest we all just take a deep breath and knock it the hell off.

In fact, I will give everyone something new to make fun of that has nothing to do with season 5. I seriously dug Chris R. in the cowboy outfit. No, seriously, I did. He was all kinds of young boy hot in that commercial and I had too compose myself lol. Since I’m not 13 years old and can still hear the nasal in his voice, it’s not going to inspire me to vote for him or anything. But, cuteness for sure.

I will say that if in the next commercial he’s dressed as a hot construction worker, well then all bets are off and I may have to start dialing. Because if everyone else can vote for Sanjaya to brinig down the evil AI empire and right the wrongs that have been done to our favorite contestants, well then I can vote for cute, nasal, timberfaker.

But, until then, GO TEAM PLAID!

  • jersey

Spense – LOL, I never thought Chris R. was cute but I just finished watching the show, which I DVR’ed since I was out last night, and I must say, his eyes in that commercial were amazing.

  • SpenserJ

    Oh and ditto this

And, I forgot to add: MJ, PJ, Kerri, Dave, Sarah, Baxter and all of the peeps going to the Chicago show tonight, have a GREAT time. Afan, I hope you get to meet up with the gang!

  • squishy

Chris R. was very hot as a cowboy. His hotness factor went up with that commercial.

  • Little Boy Blue

Kat Mcphee is now a bona fide COVER GIRL.

    If you go to http://www.yahoo.com/

At this time of posting, you will see her picture in the FRONTPAGE of their website.

And they call it Bucky Loveeeeeeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..(come on everyone, sing along!)

Carolina, I believe the actual lyric is, “And they call it Bucky Luuuuh-hu-hu-huve…..” (I was a dyed in the wool Donny Osmond fan. I know these things.)

  • longsong

Is it weird that I really donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think that Sanjaya is any worse than Gina, Haley or Phil on a lot of nights?

Kat, I agree. I think these three should actually go BEFORE Sanjaya. *ducks*

  • longsong

Have fun tonight, MJ! Tell Taylor “Hi!” from me – he’ll know what it means….

I think he could give Bucky a run for his money in a Sparkly-Blue-Eye-Off, although I’ll still give the edge to Bucky since I’ve seen his in person and they’re positively divine.

  • JJ

I cannot wait for the reports back on this show. Now weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll find out once and for all if Dave is as hot as he thinks he is. Something tells meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦nah.

Checking in for a second to say, I don’t need proof that Dave is hot.

And yes, Bush sends me Christmas Cards.

    Me too. :rolleyes_tb:

Somehow, my name got on his mailing list. I kept the cardà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ actually I took it to the local Homeless Shelter where I volunteer. However, I did return the envelop with a friendly note stating, “Thank you very much for your Christmas card but there must be some mistake. I have been a registered Democrat since I could vote and I respectfully suggest that your mailing list be updated and my name be removed. Merry Christmas to you and Mrs. Bush.”

Result? The following Christmas, I received a card with the First Dogs, Barney and Mrs. Beasley, on it.

I came in a little late today and am catching up.

In envy those going to the Chicago HOB show. I was at a concert there for my favorite artist in the world a couple of years ago and have never had so much fun in my life. GREAT venue! And GREAT artist/band you are seeing!!

I can’t wait for the mj lowdown on the concert. :)

Steve-O – I feel for ya losing your guy so early. I was hoping he would stick around awhile. Chris S. was not my favorite competitor this year (OK, no
