American Idol: What a Cop Out!

But it was for a good cause, right?

LAist watched the entire two hours of American Idol’s telethon tonight, which was broadcast at both the regular Idol studios and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. And while we admire Ryan Seacrest and company for trying to do something good for kids living in poverty in both America and Africa (checkout myspace.com/idolgivesback or the Idol Gives Back page for ways to donate), we felt cheated and manipulated when American Idol didn’t give anyone the boot tonight….

On a Charitable Night, Idol Gives No One Back

It wasn’t just 70 million voters and major corporations who were feeling charitable this week.

As the curtain fell Wednesday on the two-night Idol Gives Back special that featured live and taped appearances by celebs ranging from Bono to Miss Piggy, no one was given the boot, leaving the same six contestants to sing it out next week….

    Sweet Charity
The star-filled special telethon edition of ”American Idol” keeps the focus on giving — and spares all of the contestants until next week

Emotionally manipulate me once, shame on you. Emotionally manipulate me twice, shame on me. Emotionally manipulate me over and over for two hours, and, well, there’s a pretty good chance you’re one of the producers of ”Idol Gives Back” à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ a lengthy mash-up of big-name musical performances, random A-list cameos, devastating scenes of global poverty, and well-intentioned pleas for viewer generosity. Oh, and as an afterthought, the pesky little business of advancing the plotline of America’s biggest, most addictive reality competition.

    Or, rather, not advancing it….

TAYLOR HICKS | ON THE ROAD à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ winner Taylor Hicks is rolling on the road

While this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was dealing with the tyranny of a teen who could not sing, last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s winner was involved with more personal issues, like his first real tour. American Idol Controversy?

We know Simon Cowell isn’t know for his charity. So what was the real reason that no contestant got voted of the hit show from FOX? Could it possibly be that the wrong contestant got voted off and they wanted him/her to stick around for a little bit longer. After Sanjaya got voted off the show (you know he didn’t have the least amount of votes) this show has lost all integrity. This latest stunt just adds the phoniness.

Bucky Covington debuts at No. 1

Former Hamlet body shop employee Bucky Covington lost last season on “American Idol,” but that didn’t stop him from having the nation’s top-selling country record this week.

The self-titled album sold 61,000 copies, putting it at No. 1 on the country chart and No. 4 on Billboard’s Top 200 for all genres. Charlotte was the nation’s top-selling market, accounting for 2,500 copies.

Covington called the debut “more than I could have ever imagined.” It’s the highest Top 200 ranking for a new male country act since Billy Ray Cyrus in 1992.

Fellow “Idol” vets Kellie Pickler and Chris Daughtry also hit No. 1 on the charts in the past six months.

This is old (dated april 24) but interesting (Lisa B, sorry if you had posted this already…).

I was glancing at the Mediabase charts this morning, and noticed something pretty remarkable — now that Elliott Yamin’s “Wait for You” has entered the Top 40 Pop chart, there are now a whopping SIX songs from former American Idol contestants on this chart. That is 15% — astounding by any measure. The six songs on this chart are:

    7. Daughtry, “It’s Not Over”
    14. Carrie Underwood, “Before He Cheats”
    21. Daughtry, “Home”
    23. Kelly Clarkson, “Never Again”
    27. Katharine McPhee, “Over It”
    40. Elliott Yamin, “Wait For You”

    Wow.

The radio airplay domination doesn’t end there…there are 12 (twelve!) former Idols with a song on either the Pop, Hot AC, AC, Urban AC, or Country charts (including all five of the show’s winners), and 15 different songs overall. What does this prove? Anyone who suggests that Idol isn’t having a huge influence on the music biz is full of crap!…

Plus the show is treating the winner like carp. Congrats to Bucky for an awesome first week. Unbelievable numbers for an 8th? place finisher.

Purple, not completely understanding how a Hologram works, I was confused as to what the LIVE audience was seeing, if anything, as the television audience was viewing Elvis standing and singing next to Celine..

I’m pretty sure it was a pre-taped performance of Celine…and they added Elvis afterwards….like Paula dancing with MC Scat Cat or Fred Astaire…..Sanjaya was in the background, I noticed….so I’m thinking they recorded it before he got voted off.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

There was an Elvis impersonator on stage with Celine (lipsynching, of course) and the hologram was superimposed in recording.

Anyone else ticked off that AI has lost the ability to schedule correctly. I totally missed recording Bono’s song because it went past the hour. On the good side, I didn’t have to listen to Jordin caterwaul on it, on the bad side I missed Blake and Phil doing a great job on that crummy song.

Well, AI has lost me as a viewer. I actually decided I would try to watch 2 hrs of this cheesy show. I watched the credits so I could see Taylor like I have done this season. Well, no Taylor!!

That was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back. Whether AI likes Taylor or not, he still won last year and deserves the same recognition as the other winners.

I’m still going to visit my favorite blog. This is a great place for info about the finalists from AI5 and how their careers are going. Plus my life would not be complete without my daily dose of JJ/Metta insults! :wacko_tb:

Seems as though they still needed ‘The Sanjaya Effect’, he could have easily been edited out of the recorded performances.

Slow media day AI wise, especially considering the build up to this special. It will be interesting to see the ratings.

AI has officially become a sideshow..Next week they will be promising us talking dogs and bearded ladies..One would think that after seven years AI would be able to put on a charity event that did not feel like we were being manipulated at every turn.

What, was Taylor on last night? What are we talking about him not being in the show’s credits. Fox News used his time with the kids last week at The Beacon to help plug AI’s Idol give back..So they are still associating him with show…Sadly…

Honestly, AI is going downhill and and fast, IMO. If I was Taylor, I would hope they would not ask me back. Let them go on parading their instant success stories like trophies across their stage. I guess Ruben, Clay, nor Fantasia sold enough to be invited to their little Idol Gives Back party..

But whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s this about Taylor not being in the credits anymore?

I watch the opening credits just ’cause I like to see Taylor [I know it is fangirly]. Anyway, last night he is not in the opening credits. Maybe it was just for the charity show, but it should not have happened even for that. And I’m not making a big deal about the one thing, I have been unhappy with his treatment since this season began. Good thing I don’t have a gun permit :guns_tb:

  • Ladybug

Lisa, I noticed, too, that Taylor was gone from the opening montage. Actually, I expected for this to happen sooner than it did.

Not to be a cynic, but the be a cynic. I had a problem with last night. I know the intentions were good, but it all felt so staged and you could almost see a director, behind camera, saying “OK, now, kids let’s all cry, please. We need some touching footage here. Just look at Mr. Cowell. That should do it.”

You really could see a lot of “Why is this big person hugging me?” in the eyes of some of those people.

I will give Idol props for trying, but, as usual, it was handled in a clunky sort of way.

Some really nice performances mixed in with everything else. Kelly C and Jeff Beck were great. Ditto the Celine/Elvis CGI thingy. The Simpson’s bit was classic.

Both the Bono song and the Quincy Jones songs were standard “We are the World” pablum fare, but the kids did good work on both. They all harmonize quite well together.

And, though I didn’t feel cheated by no one being sent home (Excellent call on that one, Lisa B!), I wondered about some folks feeling duped by the final call on that. (And poor Jordin!)

I am glad AI raised money and some awareness and got their heads out of their asses for one week on Idol. I hope the funds find their way to where they are actually used as they were intended.

  • Metta

I like to see Taylor [I know it is fangirly].

There’s something wrong with that? :)

Someone else mentioned yesterday that he was no longer in the opening sequence. It’s strangely fitting, actually. I understand why its upsetting to some, but in the big scheme of things, it doesn’t matter. He’ll be fine without continued association with the circus.

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

    (And poor Jordin!)

I think they all knew about it beforehand….I mean…the smile and little eyebrow raise from Chris R to Jordin and then Jordin’s big smile pretty much gave it away that they knew. Not to mention Phils big goofy grin.

Holy tamales! Hide the children! My husband, son, and I made a collective OMG when Paula came out on stage. She was well-propped!

I don’t think for an incey second that the kids thought they were going home. Carefully observe Jordin’s mannerisms when she was in the bottom 2. It was all staged people! Only the family members weren’t in the Most Shocking Elimination Ever! farce. As soon as Ryan said that at the top of the show, I knew that nobody was going home.

I think Jack Black had more stage presence than any of the top 6, and he sang pretty darn good, too. Even though this top six is in a weird sort of way growing on me. Not that I would buy any albums or go to the Idol concert. I’m still waiting for Nicole Tranquillo to make it big!

I agree now that the idols must have either known or had an inkling that nobody was going home although last night I didn’t think Jordin knew. I have to agree with the article that pointed out that they could hardly have kicked someone out and then asked their fans to donate. :smile1_tb:

Well, if he’s out, he’s out. I’ll see what happens next week (I guess anything’s possible with them needing to save time on this charity thing). I’ll definitely say that Taylor owes these people absolutely nothing. And I’ll be glad when he gets as far away from them as he can, if all this is true. But it’s very insulting to me that TPTB believe that they can make their viewers–lots of whom voted for the guy, in case they’re forgetting–forget who won. Sad.

This project made me very uncomfortable. The whole self-contratulatory aspect of it. Feels like they are exploiting Africans and others so that they can look goodà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’and win an Emmy in the process.

There was much about last nights carpy show to be unhappy about. Many of the advertised guests never materialized, Bono was a let down, The guest performances were not up to Idol standards, many of the past Idols were ignored or crapped on, no elimination, and on and on. Even the final montage of the children saying thank you was so wrong. Did you notice that all of the children were visible minorities? Where were the Appalachian children in that?

I was pissed on Taylor’s behalf and many other Idol alumni. They would have put on a much better show. To not even acknowledge them was so insulting. The AI audience would have appreciated seeing more of the guys from past seasons blowing the roof off with their talent than these people that showed up just to shill their products. Some of them weren’t even good enough to pass an AI audition. Annie Lennox has some good songs but I was pissed that she attempted Bridge Over Troubled Water. That should have been Clay, his version is amazing and Annie’s, I hate to say it, was painful. Blechhh! I’m feeling ripped off and cranky.

Good morning again to everyone except Metta. I actually only watched the last 10 minutes of the show. Sigh….. I had to watch my Rangers lose in the 2nd round of the playoffs, after going to kickboxing. (I figured it worked for one ass kicking, I might need it again)

Anyway, I saw the group number. As you all are aware, I am not a fan of Melinda. I think she is fake, boring, has no personality or performance skills. However, I cannot deny that she is the best technical singer in the group. AI has really been pimping Jordin. I think they made a big mistake last night. Having Jordin and Melinda do a mini-duet, highlighted Jordin’s flaws, big time.

    Go Team Indifference!!!

So, are there a bunch of television booking agents scrambling this morning to fill slots that the booted Idol was supposed to be in this week/next week? Will they feel charitable next week when they have two bootees offered to them for their shows? Will they just pick the more interesting one?

Post-boot press tours are one of the ways that Idols use to help to set the tone, expose themselves to new audiences and to, hopefully, establish a career. Will those that get booted next week get short shrifted? Sure, the runner-up/winner also share the same week of press tours, but at that point, they are such big news, they both get a lot more coverage than any of the previous boots.

I guess they do get another week on television’ss highest rated show.

I hate the vote roll over though. The top voters are saved from elimination for two weeks and the lower vote getters this week will be scrambling amongst themselves. The shear volume of votes this week will be hard to overcome, so the person in 5th this week will have a tough time not getting eliminated next week even if they have a great performance. In a year when voting blocks are small and performances really seem to be a large deciding factor in who goes home, it’s kind of unfortunate.

But, I guess it fundamentally doesn’t matter when you go home. Last year’s sixth place finisher got a better contract than the fifth place finisher.

Are we going to the two song format next week as we would normally do with Top 5 night? I like it when we go to the multiple performances a night because we get to see who can build a cohesive yet varying concert and who is a one trick pony.

  • Little Boy Blue

Here’s another great article to complement the above one for Soul Patrolers, from the Kansas City Star :

    http://www.topix.net/content/kri/4079406364370596971803819624153615967368

While this season’s ‘American Idol’ was dealing with the tyranny of a teen who could not sing, last year’s winner was involved with more personal issues, like his first real tour. Taylor Hicks, who was crowned ‘Idol’ king in May 2006, launched his North American tour in February.

If he has been plugged in to this year’s ‘Idol’ drama, he’s not letting on. The name ‘Sanjaya’ may be familiar to Tibetan monks in Nepal and prisoners in isolation at Guantanamo, but not so much in the Hicks camp, where the focus is on honing the live show he puts on four times a week. From a tour stop in New Jersey recently, he spoke briefly about his life as an ‘Idol’ winner.

  • bean99

I disagree that they should have had former idols perform on the show instead of celebrities. That wouldn’t have brought non-Idol viewers in to see who was there and hopefully donate. I liked that Kelly C performed and even that Carrie was in the video. Maybe they did ask the other winners but they were too busy? The thing is, once your show is over there doesn’t have to be fairness in how they divvy up screen time. I haven’t had a favorite win since season 1 though. :laugh_tb:

Taylor should have a party when they crown the new winner. He’s handled the shabby treatment with alot of dignity. If I wasn’t hooked on the show last year (and this blog) I wouldn’t be watching this year. To be honest, all the time I spent watching the show this year feels like a total waste since none of the singers interest me. Fox, of course, dominated Wednesday with the special two-hour edition of American Idol: Idol Gives Back, a concert for charity, at a 16.2 rating/25 share from 8-10 p.m.

Here is the half-hour overnight breakdown of American Idol:

    8:00 p.m. 13.7/23 (#1)
    8:30 p.m. 15.5/24 (#1)
    9:00 p.m. 17.4/26 (#1)

Normally, I would post some boot statistics this morning, but there are no new ones. So, I’ll just mention some performance Stats:

    1. Every person still in the competition has performed first or last at least once.

    2. People who have performed first twice: Blake, Phil

    3. People who have performed last twice: Melinda, Lakisha, Jordin

    4. Person who has never performed last in the finals: Phil

    5. Person who has never performed first in the finals: Jordin

    6. Person who has performed last twice in the finals: Jordin

There have been 10 performance nights so far. 72% of boots occur to performers in the first half, so it is generally considered less advantageous to perform in the first half.

Times performed in the first half:
    6 – Chris
    5 – Lakisha, Melinda, Phil
    4 – Blake
    3 – Jordin

Since the finals have begun (7 performances), Jordin has performed in the first half once.

  • calimari

LisaB, I read your link on that story earlier & appreciated it!

I couldn’t get thru the show last night. I saw most of the first hour, while still channel flipping while performers I didn’t care about came on (Il Divo?). Then I realized I was actually watching a telethon only because it had the IA name attached, realized I never watched last week’s Lost & watched that instead. Checked out the last few minutes on the DVR to see who was voted off & saw that folks who speculated there would be no elimination were correct. But I’m glad they are dumping 2 next week as I don’t want this season dragged out any longer than need be. Right now I’m just waiting for a bit of Taylor on the finale. Sanjaya was the only reason to watch this year, and last night’s best bits that I saw were the “if everyone who voted for Sanjaya gave $1″ and, of course, Paula’s squeezed melons.

Kirsten – Do you agree that Jordin is being pimped? Or are there a couple of people TPTB are championing?

I think that it is pretty clear that Jordin is TCO.

She probably will go first next week, but it won’t matter. Even if she totally messes up (and the judges may actually call her on it for once), she got enough votes this week that she is safe (plus, she will be getting extra sympathy votes from this week because they gave the impression she was last and made her cry).

In fact, I’m willing to predict (so you can all laugh at me next week when I am wrong) that she will go first and regardless of how good she is, the judges will say something bad about her. That way they can say that they do criticize her. She’s so safe next week, she probably doesn’t even need to perform.

The next week, she will go third and they will say that she is back in the game.

  • Abilymom

Last night’s result extravaganza earned a 16.2 rating overall, and while the total numbers of viewers isn’t out yet – they should be out in an hour or so – I doubt a 16.2 will give them more viewers than AI5′s top 6 results show, which had 28.2 million viewers.

Oh, and one of the Hughs on last night’s show was arrested for throwing a can of baked beans. *giggles*

Are we going to the two song format next week as we would normally do with Top 5 night? I like it when we go to the multiple performances a night because we get to see who can build a cohesive yet varying concert and who is a one trick pony.

Not only that but only 6 performances for an hour show leaves for a lot of filler.

That is impressive. Especially if itunes are 7 day rolling charts. I have seen some people on Pulse that claim that and from the way they behave it seems fairly reasonable (I would expect to see a lot more bouncing around if it was day by day).

I do think Ryan said last night that all of the proceeds from Carrie’s performance would go to charity (it probably is for all of the performances last night but I seem to remember him saying it specifically in relation to Carrie’s).

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think that was an Elvis impersonator.. That performance was done by ELVIS back in 68, I believeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ I have seen that performance by Elvis on youtubeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

The live audience had an impersonator, the tv audience had the real one.

    ————————————
I have no idea what the live audience had because they prerecorded the part with Celine and Elvis. They enhanced his old video as much as possible and they made her video look worse to match it with his. I believe they taped this when Sanjaya was still on the show as I think he was with the group. It was pretaped just like Fergie was so I don’t know what they showed the audience. Would be interesting to hear exactly how they did it. But I read probably a week ago or more that it was already taped and that makes sense so they could digitally alter it.

  • Little Boy Blue

    1) I loved the Virtual Elvis and Celine duet. It was great how they did it. Elvis looked like he was right there on stage.

I’d like to understand the technical details of how it was done but the fact that they could do it more realistically than Princess Leia talking to Obi Wan Kenobi shows how far we’ve come.

Next — Natalie Cole should reprise UNFORGETTABLE with her dad using this same virtual technology.

That was great TV, Thanks idol, It’s good to watch as if Elvis were appearing live again….

    2) Dunno if Jordin was play-acting or not, but if not, what they did to her was NOT RIGHT.

The better thing to do was for Ryan to tell Jordin and Chris to BOTH sit down at the same time and tell them both they’re safe as well. If there was no scripting, then they did Jordin wrong with this schtick they played on her.

Mornin all……………I didn’t watch the show last night, but was interested in the Celine/Elvis duet, so watched the youtube vid. Couldn’t help but think this: Elvis is my favorite of all time. In fact I was there to watch his career unfold. On this vid, his voice was raspy and kind of yelling. He showed so much emotion and was so sexy. He brought down the house. I have every record he ever made and saw him in concert several times. No wonder I like Taylor so much.
Idol articles in the Times this morning are getting responses from me, and there is nothing about Taylor in them. But the one article does wonder what is missing this season: PASSION, and creativity with the songs, is what is missing.

Anti-malarial bed nets: the $10 dollar insult
Giving nets rather than DDT to Africans sends a powerfully paternalistic message: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹You can hide from disease, but you cannot eradicate it.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

…In America, Africa Malaria Day was big this year. The First Lady, Laura Bush, has been heading a campaign to encourage every American to donate $10 to buy an anti-malarial bed net for an African child through the charities Nothing But Nets and Malaria No More. International celebrities have also been marshalled to help spread awareness about the cause. At the suggestion of screenwriter Richard Curtis (of Comic Relief and Love, Actually fame), music mogul Simon Fuller allowed campaigners to ask for contributions on two episodes of his hit show American Idol. Titled à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idol Gives Backà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢, the shows featured celebrities such as pop star Gwen Stefani and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen pleading for money to help charities supporting the victims of Hurricane Katrina and to purchase anti-malarial nets for African kids…

“American Idol” raises money, big ratings

How much money did “American Idol” raise Wednesday night? We’ll learn next week, Fox said Thursday.

But we can tell you that the two-hour program averaged 26.4 million viewers, according to preliminary ratings. It was easily the night’s biggest show, and the audience grew as the fund-raiser went on. The audience at 9:30 was put at 30.2 million.

Best moment: Josh Groban and those smiling African children on “You Raise Me Up.”

The other network averages for the night: CBS with 9.5 million, ABC with 6.9 million, NBC with nearly 6 million and The CW with 3.4 million…..

Okay call me a sap, I actually enjoyed last night’s IGB, with the exception of the Celine duet with dead Elvis and Jordin’t adlibbing on American Prayer. Loved Kelly’s performance and Carrie’s, has Kelly gained weight or was that dress very unflattering?

Lisa B – Got your info from MJ. Will send out the cd tomorrow.

I wouldn’t trust that package, I can only imagine what she would put in it.

I read an article once, that said no matter how hard they try to dress her up, she still looks like a pug. I think that about says it.

They didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t actually show Jordin crying until after that big, loooooong group hug. My theory is that they were squirting artificial tears into her eyes in the middle of that huddle! Kind of looked like they only got the right eye though!

He has a hospital appointment tomorrow.

A two-hour competition/fundraiser “American Idol” was the night’s top show in all key demographics, putting Fox atop the ratings heap for another night.

“Idol” averaged 26.4 million viewers and a 10 rating/26 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary data released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research. It rose from 21.6 million viewers at 8 p.m. to a peak of 30.2 million at 9:30 p.m….

    Speculations Abound On Rosie’s Replacement

…Jay Leno led his monologue with a bunch of O’Donnell jokes. He said that O’Donnell leaving “The View” is such big news, they woke Walters up in the middle of the program to tell her.

Leno also said that “The View” is looking for someone chic and who can relate to the other women on the show to replace O’Donnell — and the front-runner is “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest…

All those stars and the Top 6 results show was still down 8% from last year? It’s even down 6% from the Top 7 result this week.

Granted, it did get dragged down by the beginning numbers (perhaps they did not advertise it enough and people did not know to turn on their TVs at 8?). At the rate these guys are dropping, Grey’s Anatomy might be able to be the number 1 program for a few weeks during May sweeps.

It’s my understanding that a halogram is a “projection” of a 3d image. I saw this done at a Mt.St.Helen’s visitors center in Washington state…the stage is empty and then an image of a female forest ranger is projected and she looked real and in person as she described the volcanic eruption, but when they turned the projection off, she wasnt there. cool that is what i think was done last night. It’s weird to see but cool. no impersonator needed.

‘American Idol’: Tension has a new name – Idol Gives Back

Let it never be said the producers of “American Idol” donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t understand the keys to their own appeal. For the Idol Gives Back show they were faced with an impossible task: blend two hours of compassion for the planetà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s most wretched and downtrodden with their weekly results exercise in slow motion torture of their own contestants. One can imagine the despair the producers felt as they rolled up their sleeves and tried to puzzle out how they would raise concern HIV-ridden African children living 13 to a dirt-walled room and then cut to the real tears as a contestant is sent home…

…Post-script: Many are asking how the Celine/Elvis thing looked live in the Idoldome. Sadly, that piece was pre-recorded so we in the Dome watched it on a big TV screen along with everyone else.

Here is the behind the scenes filming report from EW for last night’s show:

    http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2007/04/on_the_scene_id_7.html#more

    Behind the scene highlights:
    - Ryan seemed more nervous than usual
    - Chris seemed the most effected by the video clips that they showed
    - recapper has started noticing a “special” connection between Chris and Melinda (will the shippers use “Mes”, “Mis” or “Chrilinda”?)
    - Blake got the loudest cheer
    - the crowd was told to tone down the cheering and sign waving because it was a somber night
    - Sanjaya got lots of attention behind the scenes and told Debbie (the stage manager) that he doesn’t mind being the butt of Ellen’s jokes. Sanjaya also said that he was on the plane with Kathy Griffin and, when it was suggested that he would become part of her stand up, he said that he hoped so. When asked what was next, he said “à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I have a bunch of stuff right now, but I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really talk about it; youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll just have to watch TV to find out.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬
    - people in the audience didn’t seemed dismayed by the Celine/Elvis duet

It made me uncomfortable and I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t watch it. Real charity is performing an act to actually help and not seeking credit for it. There are other celebrities who have done charitable acts without all the hoopla. They may get publicity for it, but they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have a two hour show saying look at what we did.

I hope you forgive the length of this post, but I think it goes along with the whole AI Gives Back charity thingie, and though I type fast, it did take a while to compile it. Hated to leave any of the celebrities out.

They did project a picture of Elvis, they CGI’d him. I don’t think they turn up as well on TV, so thats why they’d use an impersonator. Especially for far away shots to make it look like Celine and Elvis were interacting. About 30 seconds into the song i just wanted to shove Celine out of the way and listen to Elvis sing. I think they did a really great job with it though. And for the Jordin thing, remember how when Haley was eliminated Phil was all smiles up until that point then he was shocked. I think for Jordin they said Chris was safe, so she was like i’m going home, and was holding it together behind a smile but then they say you’re safe as well and it’s almost like THANK YOU JESUS! I didn’t notice anything fishy about her crying? She’s 17 for christ sake.
I liked the show last night and took it for what it was, i didn’t watch to see if anyone wasn’t mentioned, i didn’t watch to see american idol screw up. I watched for entertainment and they delivered IMO. I loved all the performances they showed and i loved Annie’s performance of Bridge over Troubled Water (although my fav all time is Elvis’ version) but i think it was a great way to finish the night at the concert hall. Also Kelly sounded GREAT! I found it kinda weird that both Kelly and Carrie came from a show where they gained fame singing covers, then on the show they come back and sing covers again.

    New tidbits:

    - Ushers go around the audience with little cups to collect people’s chewing gum. No chewing gum allowed because it looks tacky.
    - there were a bunch of blonde USC sorority sisters placed behind the judges for some reason (introduced by Ryan)
    - Sanjaya got a lot of love
    - Blake had the most signs (and the most fans 11-14)

Des, that’s an interesting list. Are those personal contributions or do they include fundraisers that they hosted? If those are personal conributions, I’m especially impressed with Denis Leary. He can’t possibly have the income of some of the people on that list yet he’s way up at 13.

Thanks for that list. I’m glad to see that Wyclef Jean is a big contributor to Haiti. It bothers me when people forget where they came from, so I’m glad that he hasn’t forgotten. I went to Haiti on a mission trip for a week. It looks very similar to the pictures of Africa that we saw last night. Looking at pictures doesn’t compare at all to actually seeing the poverty.

I wonder how complete that list really is. I think it is very interesting to notice who isn’t on the list at all.

  • JJ

I think it is very interesting to notice who isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t on the list at all.

Not to diminish the contributions of the above celebrities, but as you get up into the millions, most of those are from foundations and charities that are started by a celebrity, or that use their name with permission, but get contributions from others also. I know that Arnold Schwarzenegger is affilated with Special Olympics, through the Kennedy family, and I am involved with that, and it does so much good.
Hopefully, much of the money raised through AI will be properly overseen and distributed thoughtfully. I think it only takes something like $50 to dig a well for a village in Africa to get clean water. Even children have raised money and done that.

The lowest on the list was Hilary Swank at $40K, my guess is, on a percentage basis, that is actually less than what I give.

    Here’s take on last night…
They raised over 30 effing million dollars!
    That’s incredible.
I don’t care how cheesy the show was, how dispointing some of the performances were… it’s not the Oscars and I’m sure they damn well tried there hardest to make this happen.
I thought Ellen was really compelling and passionate and she probably made a lot of people go pick up their phones. I thought the footage of the judges was great.
And to the people who say they are exploiting these children and stuff. Of course! The kids want to be exploited. They want news cameras to come through and show what it’s really like over there. No matter how manufactured and fake it looks the overall cause is helped, and with charity events, that’s all that matters.
I also think that eliminating someone last night would have been a bad decision. All week I was wondering to myself how the hell they were going to do it and I pretty much knew that they probably werent going to do it at all. My only concern was what they were going to do with the votes.
I’m pretty much a cynic when it comes to everything. But with charit stuff, I let it go. I could give a shit how egotistical these people are. As long as they’re raising money for a good cause they can do whatever they want and I won’t complain.
ETA: There were many, many snark worthy moments that will keep me laughing for days. It was hilarious and I’m not saying I thought the show was good. I’m just not angry and don’t feel i’ve been “robbed”

Afternoon everyone, here is something for you to snark about.

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jessica Alba, 25, star of the upcoming Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, has been voted the sexiest woman in the world by readers of FHM. The Sin City star, who will celebrate her 26th birthday this weekend (April 28th), tops the list.

Last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s American Idol runner-up, Katharine McPhee, placed second in her first appearance in the 100 Sexiest poll. Scarlett Johansson, who was No. 1 in 2006, dropped to No. 3 this year.

FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women poll is recognized as the original, and largest, reader-generated listing of the sexiest women in the world. It is voted for entirely by FHM readers worldwide, with approximately eight million votes counted this year from all over the globe.

McPhee, who debuted at No. 2, “captured our attention last year on American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ says Kritz, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“there is something incredibly sexy about a woman who can sing.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

If Miss Hatcher does have wrinkles, good on her! It’s nice to see when a celebrity grows old gracefully instead of going for the Kenny Rogers/Joan Rivers look. There is nothing wrong with wrinkles. They are natural and have their own beauty and character.

I’m sorry….but taking Taylor–and only Taylor–out of the opening montage is unacceptable. It’s rude and blatant. Again, THEY have offered this show to America. The whole premise is that “we decide”. The very LEAST they owe the “winner” is fair acknowledge.

The article is interesting. It says that the effects of DDT on the environment have proven to be reversible.

We can save hundreds of thousands of human lives, but some birds will be killed in the process. I think the issue comes down to what we consider to be more valuable: humans or birds?

My daughter got 7 shots for her trip to Uganda this summer. Like any Westerner who travels to Africa, she is taking malaria pills with her. She is also soaking her clothes in a solution that repels mosquitoes. She doesn’t want to have to spend all of her time hiding underneath a mosquito net, so it seems a shame to me that the media thinks the nets are the total answer to the problem.

Speaking of charity, Ace is being honored tonight by Denver Children’s Hospital. They are going to announce the total raised so far. The initial goal was 100K and they were at 98K on 4/21.

    Here’s the bulletin:

Exciting news, Highrollers! Ace and all of you that have been working so dilligently alongside Highrollers with Heart have really made an impact in helping Denver Children’s. In order to show their appreciation, the hospital is awarding Ace a special honor–the Chair Award! There will be a ceremony tonight (4/26) to recognize the many volunteers that contribute to bettering the hospital every year, with Ace getting the highest award. None of this would be possible without the continued support of each and every one of you, so we would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for everything you do to continue working towards making the FAA a reality!

During the awards ceremony, the new total for Highrollers with Heart will be announced… and it’s sure to be exciting news! Stay tuned to http://www.highrollerswithheart.org on Friday morning for the new total and a recap of the awards dinner.

Once again, thank you and congratulations! This is a big achievement, be proud!

Well I can vouch for Simon Cowell (as much as it pains me to do so)he always donates to all the big fundraisers here.

That list is nothing more than an excuse to feature celebs and their photos in a gossip mag.

    Thank you, Lisa.
As I’ve said before, “Character is doing the right thing, when no one is looking.” There are many, many people out there that donate millions, who don’t want their names published. Just because you don’t see someone’s name on a list, doesn’t mean they aren’t charitable.

It’s the ones who are on the lists that bother me. It’s the ole ‘look what I’ve done for you lately’ attitude.

DDT gets into the bugs then travels up into humans and stays in the fat cells.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reversed their position on DDT. They now say that it does not harm humans if it is used correctly. This is from a press release they issued in 2006.

Views about the use of insecticides for indoor protection from malaria have been changing in recent years. Environmental Defense, which launched the anti-DDT campaign in the 1960s, now endorses the indoor use of DDT for malaria control, as does the Sierra Club and the Endangered Wildlife Trust. The recently-launched Presidentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Malaria Initiative (PMI) announced last year that it would also fund DDT spraying on the inside walls of households to prevent the disease.

Tell that to the farmers who are now suffering from Cancers because of spraying it on their fields. A lot of stuff won’t harm humans if used correctly, but that’s the problem. Usually to get maximum yield, doesn’t require it being used correctly.

It looks like the Canadian music industry is also ailing:

    http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20070426/music_sales_070426/20070426?hub=Entertainment

In what appears to be a continuation of a long-running trend, sales of music CDs, DVDs and other formats fell 35 per cent in the first quarter of 2007 compared with the same period a year earlier, the Canadian Recording Industry Association reported Thursday.

That comes after a 12 percent sales drop between 2005 and 2006 — the largest-ever annual decline in Canada’s music market — and an almost unbroken string of sales declines since 1999.

  • Cathy

    Another interesting development:

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/music/news/e3i125893bbe2b357e358e3703876ef709d

Several sources tell Billboard.biz that a federal court has ruled that there is no performance right for publishers and songwriters in a download. The decision came during a proceeding to determine royalty rates between ASCAP and digital services AOL, RealNetworks and Yahoo!.

Currently, digital services pay a performance royalty for streams and pay a digital phonorecord delivery (DPD) royalty, which is akin to a mechanical royalty, for downloads. The performance license covers the right to “publicly perform” the recorded composition, while the DPD license covers the right to “reproduce” a copy of a recorded song and to “distribute” it digitally.

Jordin’s version of You’ll Never Walk Alone is awesome as usual, although the guitar part at the beginning is a bit countryish.
Lakisha – I Believe, this song is just sooo cheesy, the recording can’t really change this song at all
Melinda – There will come a day, oooo the beginning is so mysterious. Live or recording Melinda delivers everytime. But i’m getting bored of her, i feel all her performances and vocals are all really similar? She doesn’t really change anything up with her vocals.

Seems they totally bypassed our Native American children..

They did mention the Navajo children on Tuesday night. It was during the montage where Randy went to New Orleans, Ryan visited the homeless in Atlanta and Paula went to a mobile clinic. They briefly mentioned the children in the Appalachians and the Navajo Nation. I thought it a bit jarring because I wondered about the children in the other First Nations, but figured they were just mentioning the one specific group (just as lack of books might be a problem in other areas in the US rather than just in the Appalachians).

The mother didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even have teeth in her mouth, and she was NOT an OLD woman either.

I was heartbroken to read about that 12-year old boy who died from lack of dental care a few months ago. His mother had a low-paying job, so she did not qualify for medicare. He didn’t even mention his toothache to his mom because he knew that she was struggling to make ends meet. In the end, the infection got into his brain, and despite surgery, he still died. It ended up costing the medical system $250K and that little boy never got to grow up. That death was fully preventable. I know that there are probably a lot of issues involved, but it still seems like such a loss.

Is Sanjaya one of the most influential people? Time magazine has given his name as a possible candidate on their poll (they will be publishing their list of 100 most influential people soon).

Sanjaya is currently sitting at 6th with a 76% ranking and almost 31K votes. The only other Idol related person I could spot on the list is Simon Cowell who sits at 149 with a 40% rating and 1,850 votes.

(Time needs to learn how to count because they say that there are 200 candidates, but Paris Hilton is currently sitting at position 203. Maybe the 203rd position is something like setting the volume to 11)

I have been browsing the Season 6 Idols celebrity playlists. It does give you more insight into the kind of music they might potentially make. I give major props to Blake for including Elliott Smith in his list. He has the least amount of well mainstream artists on his list. Jordin’s list is all over the place—Celine Dion, Blake Shelton, Kirk Franklin, Jason Mraz and shock of shock, “John Wayne Gacy Jr.” by Sufjan Stevens. Lakisha’s is the least adventurous–all ex Idols, Whitney and gospel.
Melinda’s one surprise for me is the inclusion of “Love Shack” by the B-52s. Phil Stacey includes the song “Over My Head” by the Fray but has this commentary–”This is Chris sligh’s band. They’re amazing!” Can anyone explain this?

    Sixty seconds with Taylor Hicks

Indy: So Kelly was the strong female singer, Ruben was the R&B guy, Fantasia was the soulstress and Carrie was the country gal. Where do you fit in?

TH: My music leans towards the Dave Matthews Band jam-band type of format, so there’s more jamming.

An interesting quote I ran across:

“It’s hard to make money touring. Managers make money, the people in the service organizations make money, the crews make money, but there are so many times when a band spends six or seven months on the road and ends up with very little to show for it, even when a tour is grossing millions of dollars.”

Bobbi, $60 Million was raised, that is awesome!Did that include the downloaded music or is that pledges made vis a vis the telephone and internet?

I am certain some of this was quite self serving to AI, but so what.I hope they will set a trend for some of the other programs to come up with their own charity events.

This would go a long way in absolving some of the negative feelings against the United States that have developed in the last few years.

I think most Americans are truly decent people and I am proud of AI for doing this and showing that Americans do care about others.

Shar, I didn’t hear him give specifics. The story he was doing was how AI reached a younger generation that is not normally involved in philanthropic efforts.

  • shar

Bobbi, thanks for the info. That is a good point about reaching the younger generation, however,I would think that would be mostly through the music downloads. I wonder what the age breakdown is for people who watch the program. I would think it is mostly 30 and up.

Beesims, I was checking out the Idol’s playlists, too. Blake certainly has good taste in music. That’s one of the first thing I noticed about him even before I became a card-carrying member of Team Plaid. I’m not familiar with all his choices, but I’ll probably check them out.

As for song selections for this week, some good suggestions for Blake have been mentioned at teamplaid.com. I think Sublime, the Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Third Eye Blind, RHCP, Radiohead, and the Beasties were all mentioned. I’d love him to try “Evil” by Interpol or maybe something by Razorlight, but they may be too obscure.

Here’s an article I found, combining news from Fox.com and One.org

    ‘Idol’ charity donations top $60M

An “American Idol” charity special filled with wrenching pictures of impoverished children and celebrity appeals raised more than $60 million, Fox said Thursday.

The money from “Idol Gives Back,” a two-night special that was combined with the regular talent contest, will go to organizations funding relief programs for America and Africa, the network said. Donations came from viewers and corporations.

A total of $5 million was pledged by Fox parent company News Corp., which gave 10 cents for each of the first 50 million votes received for contestants on Tuesday’s show. More than 70 million votes were cast, a record for the show, Fox said.

Pledges were still coming in and an updated total was to be announced on next Tuesday’s show, Fox said.

In the spirit of the evening, “American Idol” decided not to bounce a contestant as usual Wednesday à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ meaning two singers will be going home next week.

Performers on Wednesday’s two-hour special included Earth, Wind & Fire, Kelly Clarkson and Josh Groban with the African Children’s Choir. Ben Stiller, Madonna and other celebrities encouraged viewers to donate.

Ellen DeGeneres, co-host with Ryan Seacrest of Wednesday’s show, said she was making a personal donation of $100,000.

Funds will go to the newly formed Charity Projects Entertainment Fund for distribution to groups including America’s Second Harvest: The Nation’s Food Bank Network, Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

More than money was raised. More than 70,000 people joined “ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History,” the group said Thursday, after rock star-activist Bono’s video plea Wednesday for people to unite against “brutal, stupid poverty.”

ONE is a a coalition of over 2.4 million people and 100 of the nation’s relief, humanitarian and advocacy organizations.
