The Voice UK 2017 third night of Blind Auditions air on its new channel ITV 1. Season 6’s new coaches Sir Tom Jones, Jennifer Hudson, will.i.am and Gavin Rossdale continue to build their teams.

April Sullivan – Don’t Rain on My Parade from Funny Girl – This 23 year old loves musical theater. She works at the Disney Frozen show. She’s eyeing Jennifer Hudson as coach. She worked for Disney too, remember. If a coach turns for her…she’ll wet herself. OK then.  JHUD seems into it. But doesn’t turn. She’s got some pitch issues and is a bland performer. Unsurprisingly no one turns. SADS. She walks off stage with the big smile she came in with. “She gave it a good shot,” says JHUD. “I really enjoyed every second of it,” April says through her tears.

So far, these UK coaches are only interested in pop acts.

Millicent Weaver – “Where is my Mind” by The Pixies – She just finished college. She plays bass and sings, but really wants to focus on singing. She describes herself as “indie.” She’s got her eye on Gavin. She’s VERY nervous. Gavin listens with his eyes closed. She’s not bad. Not very unique, but she’s got that swoopy alternavoice down pat. Gavin literally turns at the last possible minute. Millie is ecstatic. The coaches all agree she belongs with Gavin, who says he sees her potential. Team Gavin Rossdale

David Jackson – “All I Want” by Kodaline – He’s a retail worker from Belfast. After accumulating debt, he’s back living with mom and dad at 29. Mom is not complaining. He’s sung forever…since he was a kid. But as a big guy from Belfast, folks don’t take him seriously. Oh. I bet we’ve got one of those 4 chair turns you don’t look like you sound deals going on here. He got three turns–no Will. He’s a decent singer. Kind of Sam Smith-ish, but not as powerful. Mom is crying her face off. Gavin says the feeling he puts in his performance…he’d be privileged to coach him. Tom calls him “distinctive.” Jennifer agrees. She promises to support him to the max. Mom is rooting for Jennifer. And he listens. David chooses Team Jennifer Hudson

Kevin Prone – “Cinema Paradiso” – He’s from the French Caribbean island, Martinique. He’s on The Voice because he “wants to sing for British people.” OK. Oh lord. He’s a male soprano. Yeah…nobody turned for that. The coaches sneak a peek and are REAL surprised. “IT WAS A GUY!” says Tom. Again, it’s the whole “I wouldn’t know what to do that voice. Not even sure why they are bothering with contestants who are outside of the pop box.

Craig Ward – “Always a Woman to Me” by Billy Joel – He’s been married for two years and they have a little baby. He hasn’t played a gig in three years due to his family obligations. He’s looking for one last crack at the business. Hm. His voice is weirdly warbly, with a thick Scottish accent, but he’s unique. And from Glasgow. A definite stand out as far as originality is concerned. Finally, Tom, Gavin and Will turn at the last possible minute. Gavin can “feel some journey” in his voice. Jennifer didn’t turn–she felt the others had more to offer and spent the performance urging them to turn. Tom loves Craig’s Scottish accent–he doesn’t understand why UK singers try to sound American–and finds his honesty appealing. The singer admits he had his eye on Tom so Craig chooses Team Tom Jones

Will only has two team members, while the others have four or five already.

Geno Accles – “You are So Beautiful” by Joe Cocker – A 54 year old singer. He and his wife have five daughters. He was in a funky soul band and was offered a contract 33 years ago. He turned it down because of his family obligation. A very sweet soulful voice–Jennifer clutches her heart. Then the rasp comes. He’s kind of Tom Jones-ish actually. Nobody is turning. Nope. No turns. Sad. The family is backstage crying. Now, the daughter has to take the stage and sing.

Haley Eccles – “Upside Down” – Daughter is auditioning too. She cleans toilets. Oh boy. After her dad got no turns, she composed herself enough to perform. She has a modern sounding, jazzy voice. Nobody is turning for her either. Except Will FINALLY turns at the last minute. Dad rushes the stage to hug her. When the coaches find out they rejected her dad, they felt kind of bad. Tom confessed that he just “didn’t feel it.” Ouch. Will goes back stage to meet the family. They forgive him for dissing dad. Team Will.i.am

Jazmin Sawyers – She competed in the last Olympics in Rio. She placed 8th in the long jump. Sports isn’t the only thing she loves. On the third verse her vocal opens up and finally Will turns his chair. She was a little boring up to that point. The coaches agree that her Olympic discipline will be a plus. Team Will

Sarah Morgan – “Missed” be Ella Henderson – 16 year old Scottish girl–I can barely understand her. Ha. She comes from a big family. Gavin is the first to turn. She has a sweet pop voice and is a marketable singer. Tom turns next. He appreciates her tone and control. Gavin offers that he’s half Scottish. He calls her a “songbird.” Will notes that she had both a rock star and legend turn for her. They can’t believe she’s only 16. Oh. She grew up in foster care until she moved in with her grandmother full time. Jennifer says she relates to using music as an escape. Sarah chooses Team Gavin Good choice. He seems particularly interested in nurturing her talent.
