The Voice Judges to Sing Queen Songs on the 1st Live Show

So here’s a major difference between American Idol and the Voice in a nutshell. The Live shows will kick off with performances by…the contestants? NOPE. The JUDGES.

Via the Hollywood Reporter

The Voice’s Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton will open their first live show Tuesday with a medley of Queen Songs.

The four coaches will perform “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.” Their last collaboration came on the breakout show’s premiere episode, when they performed “Crazy.”

“Kicking off the debut of the live episode of The Voice with these high energy renditions of classic Queen hits will set the tone for our live shows,” said NBC and Universal Media Studios executive vice president of alternative programming Paul Telegdy.

It’s the judges who are setting the tone for the live competition? Really? If Idol debuted THEIR live shows with Jlo, Steven and Randy taking the stage to “set the tone” with a performance I’d be throwing things at my TV. SIT DOWN JUDGES and JUDGE I’d be bitching.

Yeah. BIG difference between the two shows. If the talent can’t carry The Voice, the show is in big trouble.

I’m more excited about the two hour Voice tomorrow than I ever was about any episode of idol this year! Bring on the live shows!

I love getting the judges singing again. They sound and work so well together. I think it reinforces the idea that these people are talented, current, and superstars in their own right.

MJ: Yeah. BIG difference between the two shows. If the talent can’t carry The Voice, the show is in big trouble.

I really agree with this. I think The Voice is working moreso because of the coaches than the talent and it’s been like that from the beginning.

I think the battle rounds set up a weaker field because Adam and Cee Lo had some good people they pitted against each other. Even still, Adam and Cee Lo have better teams than Blake and Christina but everybody’ll be losing the same number of people for 2 weeks right?

Is there much doubt as far as the talent that everybody’s playing for 2nd place to Javier? Vicci’s the only person I can see possibly giving him a run for his money. Most of the talent seems like fodder but maybe they’ll sound better if they can pick songs that suit them.

I love that the judges do this once in a while (and not every week). It sets the stage by showing why they are so qualified to judge and mentor. And ramps everything up for the contestants.

There’s a couple of weak people left for the live shows, but the majority of the singers are strong..and there’s still a lot of variety.

The reason I don’t watch the last two/three weeks of American idol is that we normally end up with the pimped ones, who are inevitably not my favorites. Haley stuck it out til top 3, so American idol got me as a viewer for an extra week.

It’s going to be interesting to see if producer’s/judges will manipulate the show as heavily as they do on Ai. Sincerely hope not.

i can forgive the lack of talent in S1. they ran out of auditioners this season for godsakes. that’s astonishing. thank god we had kelly and tamyra.

S2 better be better. more people will know about it and audition. and they will hopefully fix the battle rounds so that it doesn’t draaaaag.

Somebody already pointed this out but the problem is they actually scouted for talent for The Voice. Probably people will be more willing to go in for the show next season since it’s a hit but this is a situation where they were casting the talent. I don’t think you can blame a lack of auditioners for the lack of depth, it’s because of the casting people.

People say american idol is too much about the judges and not the talent, but at least the judges on idol aren’t constantly performing. american idol judges arent the only ones guilty for trying to re boost a career

  • Reflections On Life

I liked a lot of the people that got kicked off during the Battle rounds, so I’m less enthusiastic about the live shows. I flove that our judges are genuine singing stars and kick off the shows occasionally with singing. Not only is it fabulous entertainment on my TV, but it sets the bar, letting us know as viewers that they are looking for contestants who could potentially become like them.

Is there much doubt as far as the talent that everybody’s playing for 2nd place to Javier? Vicci’s the only person I can see possibly giving him a run for his money.

For me it’s Javier, Jeff, & Vicci. That kid Jeff got to me the way Scotty got to a lot of AI fans. The only “moments” on this show so far have been (1) judges singing Crazy and (2) Jeff’s GBTBR, with honorable mentions for Rebecca’s Nirvana song and Vicci’s battle round (both Vicci and Nikki should have made it through). Javier seems like the winner, but he’s basically a has-been cuz he’s already had a singing career and several semi-successful albums, so I’m not sure that The Voice benefits from “discovering” him.

This was posted by Jared Blake(on team Blake) about he voting:

Jared Blake:Thanks so much Darlin. Remember live shows start this tuesday. Your allowed 10 votes per artist per phone line, 10 votes online per email and up to 10 itune downloads.

I wonder what he meant by 10 itune downloads?

I love the judges on the The Voice. They are reason enough for me to watch. For me, >95% of the “talent” on all of these competition shows is forgettable. After umpteen seasons, there’s nothing on AI that’s compelling enough for me to watch. The Voice judges – they’re compelling enough for me to watch, at least so far.

they’ve performed one time. in the very first episode. the same number of times jlo, steven tyler, paula, and kara (if you count that silly bikini girl skit). so…..

true. well let’s hope they fired that casting agent!

  • fuzzywuzzy

Cool! I’m looking forward to seeing the judges perform together again.

Don’t forget the video’s, books etc, and do ya count Jlo shaking her butt on finale and StevenT?

I am confused as to how the live rounds eleminations are going to happen. Is it one per team each week? The limit of 10 itunes sounds odd, if I buy any It will be one copy from any contestant.

I would never tune in to AI to see the judges sing; in fact I try to tune out when they do. As strange as it seems (or is), I regard the Voice judges as talent; I love watching them sing. Go figure.

Maybe it has to do with Idol more blatantly selling the judges product, which I don’t particularly like. I do not tend to take The Voice seriously as a competition (and should do the same for AI).

  • YeahRight

I like The Voice coaches performing. That “Crazy” performance was awesome. All those different genres singing together — it was great. I have it on my iPod. Just wish the performance was longer.

Anyway. This Queen medley is probably going to be pretty good, too. They’re just kicking off the show. It’s not like the entire show is going to be about them. And why wouldn’t they have them perform again? Especially when the “Crazy” performance was so well received. I think it would be silly to have them not perform during the whole run of the show.

  • kmd

I am really looking forward to seeing The Voice live tomorrow. I want to hear both the judges singing and the talent. I think that there is some very good talent on the show. I actually think the show might be more entertaining than AI.

  • Mel1

They have talented coaches on The Voice, esp Christina. On AI? Tyler was/is the only one. How many times was J-Lo highlighted? Her video, dancing (or shimmying) on the results – any others? I can’t see her singing live.

I’m looking forward to the coaches singing as well as the contestants.

  • chrislongisland

I think Javier and Jeff have to be considered the favorites.

I HATE the Thompson Sisters more than any other act, along with Bald Beverly.

  • TylerWV

I love that the coaches are going to sing. People, including me, emailed the network requesting it. They had already posted on their site that there were no future plans for the coaches to sing. After seeing how popular it was, they expanded to 2 hrs. and we are going to hear the coaches again. yay~ These coaches don’t have to jumpstart their careers. They are all currently big names in their genres, still selling music, touring, etc. I had never heard Cee Lo until this show and I must say I love the tone of his voice. Bald Beverly is a hard sell but the gal can flat out sing.

  • Eileen99

I agree, but thought they probably should have had a do-over type thing where each judge could kick off one person who won a battle & bring back somebody who they didn’t choose. LOL idk that might have made things too complicated.

But, overall I like the show & the judges are the best part of this show, unlike Idol. We’ll see how the live shows go, but I loved it when the judges sang Crazy together & am looking forward to seeing them perform again.

  • HotHotHot

Are we sure it’s on Tuesday? I thought they were moving to Monday with the live shows.

  • GwendolynD

I love the idea of the judges performing, simply because I think they’re talented, and I haven’t gotten the feeling this season that the show is about the judges…yet. Meh. I’m fans of all of them. As long as they don’t make this a habit – should be good.

Problem with the AI judges in previous seasons is…they became irrelevant after a while. Randy and Kara were useless, Paula (love her!) was loopy, and Simon wanted it to revolve around what he wanted. Then, factor in their boredom in the latter years, and it ruined the show for me.

Cee Lo, Christina, Blake, and Adam are still working for me. I love how they’re involved with the contestants. So, if they open the show with a performance and do it well, so be it.

It’s the first season, and they’re still feeling things out.

  • Vanquish

Arn’t the voice judges supposed to be “coaches” and not judges? If they’re coaches, it makes perfect sense for them to sing. They’re demonstrating to the contestants how it SHOULD be done, what the bar is supposed to be. Case in point, how is this different from a show like dancing with the stars, where the pro dancers are coaches too. Its not unheard of for the pros in DWTS to do a pro dance in the beginning of the season to show how it is supposed to be done to their pupils.

  • Grammie Kari

So far, I like The Voice; however, I love American Idol. There are a few contestants on The Voice which do not impress me. Some that were sent home were actually better. I am curious to see what Frenchie will be doing, but I do consider her a professional.

I like the judges and look forward to their performing. I do want to see what kind of mentors they are. It is my hope that the Idol judges will learn something from this show.

  • kmd

The only show that I am looking forward to seeing this summer is The Voice. It really has no competition as far as I am concerned. The coaches are so much better than AI judges. They need to make changes with the judges next year on AI or else the show is in trouble. They need to be judges/mentors not over paid cheerleaders on AI.
