Look at executive producer, Mark Burnett, going all smug in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter  after The Voice was nominated for Outstanding Competitive Reality series today, and American Idol was not:

“If only you knew the amount of people who said to us, ‘You’re crazy making another music competition show. America’s got enough of them and no one is going to watch another one with spinning chairs,’ “ he recalls of the general skepticism surrounding The Voice before its launch, adding: “But my instincts with NBC were that this would work, and I think that it did because this show plays on an idea of making ordinary people feel powerful.”

As he sees it, The Voice’s recognition marks a new era: “For the Academy to have made the only nominee for a music competition show be The Voice was a big statement that says, ‘You guys are fresh, you guys are relevant, and it’s good programming,’” explains Burnett, a former Emmys producer who is no stranger to accolades.

“Idol has had lots of nominations, but I feel like there’s been a shift. Today is a new era.”

Seriously duuuude. I’d wait to see how your 3rd cycle of The Voice pans out so soon after it aired in the Spring. Ya’ll couldn’t beat American Idol in the ratings, even after that phony assist from the Superbowl.

And mark my words. Mark Burnett is a guy who is an expert on idiots willing to eat bugs for fame, but knows nothing about the music business. I’ll eat my arm if The Voice EVER produces a star of the caliber of a Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry etc. They’ll be lucky to produce a William Hung.

Any of the singing competitions are preferable to the tired old fogey Idol.
There’s a reason Idol has lost 5+ million viewers over the last couple of seasons.
It sucks – that’s why it failed to get a nomination too.

Rumor has it LA Reid has her on a diet/fitness regimen and that she will be re-launched this fall during the new season.

The Voice is not about finding a star. That was pretty obvious when during the very first episode of the second season, they didn’t even mention the Season 1 winner. And when the winners of both S1 and S2 of The Voice opened for Adam Lambert, who didn’t even win Idol, this past spring, that says a lot about their relevance in the music industry.

But there are many more who aren’t superstars earning a living as songwriters, actors in TV, films and movies, as hosts. Idol may not make everyone a superstar, but they have launched many careers.

Hi MJ ~ I was wondering if you meant, “But there are many more who aren’t superstars earning a living as songwriters, actors in TV,  stage productions, and movies, as hosts”?

People like Anthony Fedorov, Syesha, Taylor, and Constantine have had success in stage productions. Right? Films and movies are the same, I think.
