I finally sat down and really watched this show for the very first time (only caught the videos last week) and I think Mark Burnett shot his wad talent-wise last week. Really, Adam, the talent you pass up on the Voice is only good enough for American Idol?

This show is gimmicks and bigger production values. The talent is no better than what you find on Idol. In fact, there are so many plants and retreads (and a few Idol rejects. Last week there was Frenchie, this week there was Emily Valentine who called herself Emily Wynn Hughes during Idol season 8. She only made it as far as Hollywood) that there is a slight whiff of desperation in the air you mostly don’t find on Idol.

The judges are the best thing on this show. Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton have fantastic chemistry and are really fun to watch.  The competition between the teams will likely be the most interesting aspect of The Voice. But from my perspective, if the talent is dull, I will eventually lose interest because ultimately, these shows succeed on the talent of the contestants.

Lukas Rossi the winner of the second season of Rock Star reportedly auditioned and was rejected, but we never got to see that.

Live blog and VIDEOS after the JUMP…

I’ll be live blogging The Voice HERE! Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton pick more contestants for their individual teams

Cherie Oaklie – Nashville TN 29 – Gunpowder and Lead by Miranda Lambert – She toured with Carrie Underwood and Gretchen Wilson as a background singer. She’s a songwriter too–she wrote Reba’s “Turn on the Radio”.  Also, there’s some super dishy gossip about how she began dating her husband–who was married at the time–when she sang backup and he played guitar in Carrie’s band. WHOOPS. Well, you know Blake Shelton is engaged to Miranda. She sings for awhile.  It takes a bit, but Christina turns around finally. She’s the only one. Blake says she’s stepping into some big shoes,, and didn’t feel she measured up. ” You have such a big voice coming out of such a bitty little thing,”  says Cee lo. Adam thought her voice was almost too aggressive. Christina picked her because she was “attacking” it. – Christina’s Team – VIDEO

Devon Barley – 19 – Mattapoisett MA – “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz – Devon is in med school. His parents really want him to become a doctor. He took time off from med school, much to their dismay. Nobody is turning around! There’s nothing special about him. Maybe he should go back to med school. Ohhh. There goes Cee Lo and Adam. Christina didn’t spin around because she thought Adam would be a better fit. Adam loves tone. He thinks there’s a lot of character in Devon’s voice–a lot to work with. Blake agrees on the tone issue, but felt Devon was missing the pitch at the end of his phrases. Cee lo thought he was awesome. Adam tries to woo Devon….and he chooses goes with Adam. Adam’s Team - VIDEO

Joshua Scott Hand – 29 – Palm Beach FL – “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga – Scott, apparently, is a funny guy (I’ll take your word for it). Sads. Nobody turns around. Blake was thrown off by the Lady Gaga deal. Christian felt like Adam had more to offer. Adam didn’t know what the song was til the chorus. It was a little shaky. “Follow your heart or don’t do it at all,” says Cee Lo. That performance was messy. Like Adam, I had no idea what he was singing at first. REJECTED - VIDEO

Raquel Castro – 16 – “Bleeding Love” – She claims not to be very experienced, though it’s been a dream since she was 4. Oh. But she’s not such a newbie afte rall. She’s got an interesting quality to her vocal. Christina turns her chair. Good thing Christina turned before she went for that horribly off-key melimsa. Yikes. Adam gives her props for courage at her young age. Blake really thought Christina was a better fit. “Great things come in small packages,” says Christina. Good luck Christina. This girl obviously needs a lot of work. Christina’s Team - VIDEO

Emily Valentine – 23 – Hollywood, CA – “Sober” by Pink – She got a big raspy rock voice, but oooohhhh PITCHY. Cee lo and Blake turn around. Christina was dying to see what she looked like. “You’re beautiful,” she says, but felt a few moments were pitchy. Cee Lo calls Pink a friend. Adam gives him sh*t “Let me pick up that name where you dropped it….” Heh. Blake picked her because he loves the rasp in her voice. “Cee Lo I would be really honored to work with you,” says Emily. Yeah. That’s a better fit. Emily Valentine was Emily Wynn Hughes on Idol Season 8. Here’s her spoiler, Hollywood solo, and a recap of the group song that ended her run in Hollywood.   Cee Lo’s Team - VIDEO

Nicky Dawson sings “Teenage Dream” and joins  Cee Lo’s Team (We don’t get to see her audition, really)

A singer named Sara Oromchi sings “Imagine” and is winds up on Blake Shelton’s Team

Tim Mahoney – 39 – Minneapolis, MN – “Bring it on Home to Me” by Sam Cooke – So many record label showcases! He came close, but no cigar. He feels like it’s his last shot. Adam turns around quickly, and is enraptured by his performance. Adam thought he was “a chick”. LOL. “Clearly you are not a woman. I need a woman for my team, and sadly you have a penis.” Adam isn’t sorry he picked him, however. Blake was going to push his button if Adam didn’t “You guys are going to make a great couple,” says Blake. Adam’s Team - VIDEO

Julie Eason – 18 – Palos Verdes, CA – “Mercy” by Duffy – A soccer player, she’s scared her nerves will get the best of her. But they don’t Julie’s bluesy stylings get the panel’s attention right away. Cee Lo turns first, Christina follows. Blake says she deserves to be in this competition. He would have turned if nobody else did. Christina says she would LOVE to work with Julie. Loved her runs and her ad libs but more than that Julie has soul. Cee Lo is impressed by her ability to be smooth and assertive at the same time, and that she’s graceful under pressure. Julie eventually chooses Christine. Young Julie definitely has potential. – Christina’s Team - VIDEO

Angela Wolf - 25 – Metter, CA -  “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert – She really wants Blake to turn around. Risky picking a Miranda song! “I’m going to stop following you on twitter! Blake is smiling as she begins the song. She sounds very professional. Awww. NOBODY TURNED AROUND. Sads. She’s really hot too. “That was really tough for me. There’s so much history…I kept waiting for it to go somewhere, but they didn’t go to the right places.” Adam feels like he’s already picked too many people (but don’t you need some chicks?) Note to female country singers: DO NOT SING MIRANDA LAMBERT. REJECTED - VIDEO

Tyler Robinson – 20 – Folsom, CA – “Hey Soul Sister” by Train – HE’S GAY. Out out out. Hooray! His dad is not supportive of his music. He hasn’t told his dad he’s gay. Ooops. Blake turns around. Why do I find that hilarious? Hm. I like this guys voice. really interesting tone, nice phrasing, good pop voice. Me likes despite singing the song I HATE MOST IN THE WORLD. Cee lo did not think he stood out. Blake thinks he has a solid, full voice. Was expecting to see Drew Carey. “Tyler, you’re on my team.” HE SURE IS BLAKE. HAR. Blakes Team - VIDEO

Some singers may be brought back! DRAMA.

Nakia – 36 – Austin, TX -  “Forget You” by Cee Lo Green  – Token fugly guy! He’s gay too, but doesn’t make a big deal of that fact–just mentions a partner he’s been with for a long time. He’s got a growly rock voice and a nice falsetto. CEE LO TURNS AROUND. Dude is good. Casey Abrams, this is how you sing with a growl! Blake turns around next, and laughs when he sees the big burly and bearded singer. He sorta looks like Brian Wilson when he lived in a sandbox in his living room. “You have great taste in music,” says Cee Lo, “Like me, I think you could be an exception to the rule.” Christina thinks it took “guts and balls” to do a Cee Lo song. But, she was taken a back by the aggression. “You had the crowd going, says Blake, You look nothing like I expected. You’re a big old white guy singing a Cee Lo song–that makes you unique.” Nakia picks Cee Lo, of course. Cee Lo’s Team - VIDEO

Sarabee sings “Son of a Preacher Man” and is picked for Blake’s Team

Casey Desmond sings “Born This Way” and ends up on Adam’s Team

Justin Grennan on Christina’s Team (her first guy!)

The people we don’t turn around for could be on American Idol…but we’re looking for something extra – Adam Levine.  Melinda Doolittle asked me on twitter what Adam said, I repeated it and added that he obviously never heard her sing.  Melinda would effing blow away every single person who auditioned tonight off that stage.

Dia Frampton – “Bubbly” by Colbie Callait – Whoa that didn’t take long. Blake turns around immediately. She’s pretty. Nice phrasing. She got a smokey tone and does little things with the song that make it unique. She’s also in a band with her sister and has put out albums WIKI.  Cee Lo eventually turns around. “Hey pretty girl,” says Cee Lo. “When I heard your voice I started to smile. You have that earthy thing about you that has in common with country music. That’s why I could work with you,” says Blake. Cee Lo thinks she looks cozy and cuddly. She picks Blake. Wise choice, obviously.  Blakes Team - VIDEO

Two auditions left with six spots open. What?

Curtis Grimes – Hillbilly Bone by Blake Shelton – Blake looks like he smelled something bad. Nobody is turning around. Cee Lo finally turns around. Aw… Curtis really wanted Blake to turn around, but he did not. Blake didn’t think he nailed the cocky attitude of the song, but he’s glad Cee Lo picked him. Curtis is trying to hide his disappointment. Cee Lo is looking forward to writing a country song. Alrighty then. “It will be interesting,” he says. I thought he was a bit of a poser. Cee Lo’s Team - VIDEO

Tori and Taylor Thompson – 17 & 19 – “Stuck Like Glue” – Twins finishing each other’s sentences. The duo act like they just fell off the turnip truck, but I bet they didn’t. (In fact, these two competed on American Juniors. Ugh)  So cutsey poo–pretty annoying. For some reason. Adam says it was adorable. So did Christina. Inexplicably, Cee Lo picks them. Cee Lo’s Team - VIDEO

Cee Lo has his team in place. But the others still need members. They’ve run out of contestants. After the break, they will re-audition people they passed over.

SECOND SHOT – Hm. I guess we’re assuming the coaches have REALLY BAD MEMORIES.

Lily Ellse – 20 – San Anselsmo “If I Ain’t Got You” – Christina regretted passing her initially. Christina turns around and is very very happy. She gives a crying Lily a hug. Christina’s Team. - VIDEO

Christina and Cee Lo’s teams are full.

Sonia Rao – “Chasing Pavements” – 24 – Freehold, NJ -  She’s pitchy and mumbly. Will Blake or Adam turn around? Adam doesn’t want her. Nobody turns around. SCORNED TWICE. That’s gotta suck. REJECTED - VIDEO

Jared Blake – 32 – Star City AR – “Not Ready to Make Nice” – Blake turns around. Jared has a soulful, Darius Rucker sound. He’s good. I’m glad Blake turned around. Blakes Team - VIDEO

Adam is the only coach with an open spot.

Casey Weston – “Stupid Boy” – Will Adam turn around? YES HE DOES. Casey’s got that Jewell country folk vibe. Very nice. – Adam’s Team - VIDEO

Angela Wolf – “Rolling in the Deep” – Blake may not have wanted her, but Adam is willing to take her. Liked her better on the Adele song, actually. Adam’s Team - VIDEO

Battle Rounds next week. New time: 10 pm.

  • koshka

    Dude is nervous!

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

This guy looks like an older version of Chicken Little.

  • gangreen29

If anyone is as pathetically as impatient as me you can see who makes it through this episode before they get their decision. The Voice songs are already up on itunes lol. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wn84BgjvSGc/TcCls1Sbi0I/AAAAAAAAAnI/Cf1g4ERCFVE/s1600/Untitled-1.jpg

This kid reminds me of the chicken little kid that was on AI a few years back.

  • bentley1530

Christina better start trying for some males if she wants to have a chance to win.

Spoil sport! LOL ;) Now lets see if I can resist for 2 hours.

  • blmetsfan

When I first saw him in commercials, I thought it was Chicken Little! lol

  • koshka

    This guy is horrible.

  • fedexhamlin11

    its gunpowder and LEAD :)

  • Valentin432

Lol, they casted some handsome contestants just to prove that looks don’t matter

  • karenc

This guy Josh isn’t very good

  • Fullmoon

    This guy sucked.

  • jersey

I couldn’t understand a word that guy was singing.

  • sunny2

    Dude is rough!!!

  • St.Lucia

Glad no one turned around for the Josh Hand guy. He was something awful.

Hope they don’t turn around for this girl either.

  • koshka

    meh.

ETA: xtina is going to pop out of her dress. LOL

  • gangreen29

Christina is a moron. Those boys just punked her LOL

  • St.Lucia

Does Christina have any males on her team? Doesn’t she know males always win? Didn’t she learn anything from Idol? :)

    LOL worlds collide.

“The best part appearing in Jersey Girl was meeting my idol Jennifer Lopez.”

  • jersey

Lol at Lyndsey Parker calling out a 16 year old!

  • desiree_chick

I thought that Raquel girl was a mess. She clearly needs a few more years, not months, of training. And seriously, that girl being from “Jersey Girl”? Oh hilarious! Call her out, yes. She knows how to play the game.

  • Fullmoon

No way Christina touching that one. Pink anyone?

  • jersey

    Lol, pitchy dawg.

And lol at Adam and the name dropping comment!

  • sr4mjc

I remember this girl from Idol. But that was a pitchy mess

  • St.Lucia

I remember this girl from Idol. But that was a pitchy mess

I thought the name sounded super familiar.

  • Valentin432

Of course you remember her lol:

Emily Valentine aka Emily Wynne Hughes! From American Idol Season 8!

  • jersey

I thought the name was familiar too but I’m pretty sure that’s because there was a character named Emily Valentine on the original 90210 series, lol.

  • webster

The “I didn’t pick you because I thought you’d do better with X” bs is getting old.

  • missytoots

I would have like to see more of the Teenage dream singer

  • tinawina

I hope they’re saving the better talent for the 10 o’clock hour, because so far……..very mediocre.

Yeah, I’m typing while listening and most of them sounded pretty bad to me.

  • jrain

lol at all the recycled artists. Next year we can expect Thia Megia on the voice.

  • St.Lucia

I thought the name was familiar too but I’m pretty sure that’s because there was a character named Emily Valentine on the original 90210 series, lol.

I think this may be my reasoning too. :)

  • sma11ie

Does Christina have any males on her team? Doesn’t she know males always win? Didn’t she learn anything from Idol?

    LOL

  • sr4mjc

I remembered her look, kinda distinctive. Unlike her voice, lol

  • desiree_chick

lol at all the recycled artists. Next year we can expect Thia Megia on the voice.

Yeah, and once most of them are out of the contract, next year, expect to see the rest of the top 13 of season 10 that is not Scotty and Lauren. Yes, that includes Pia, too, if things don’t work out. I’m already hearing Casey growling out “I don’t need no doctor”, lol.

  • jersey

Lol Adam. You have a penis.

  • wonderings

The talent isn’t as good tonight, at least so far.

The commercial breaks seem so much shorter for The Voice vs. Idol.

  • sma11ie

    Soccer chick was awesome.

  • desiree_chick

I also not liking them doing the “idol-esque” bypassing of giving good contestants only 5 seconds of air time, saying “so and so made it” for this person. Yeah, can I hear a little more of that person please? Watch those people get bussed later on.

  • missytoots

    another female for Xtina lol

  • gangreen29

I like Julia. There is something there.

  • sr4mjc

Christina rejects the penis Adam.. 6 girls for her team

  • jersey

Hmm, I think soccer chick should have picked Cee Lo.

  • gangreen29

    Girl power Christina <3

  • jlc

I hope they’re saving the better talent for the 10 o’clock hour

Me too cuz I’m watchin’ DWTS…James Blunt performing right now.

  • gangreen29

Going into this I was thinking if I was a contestant I would pick Cee Lo or Christina, but Adam is really impressing me.

  • aidancash1

    LOL poor Blake again

  • jersey

I thought Lukas Rossi was supposed to be auditioning on this show. Haven’t seen him yet.

  • gangreen29

I didn’t LOVE that girl, but I think she was better than some of the ones chosen.

  • sma11ie

Victim of a bad song choice! House That Built Me girl brought nothing new, but was way better than the Kevin Covais 2.0 or the 16 year old who went off the rails on Leona…

LOL, Soul Sister, the song of MJ’s disdain! Reject him! Can’t believe Blake turned around for that?!

  • jrain

The last girl was good. Imo she deserved a shot. Too bad.

  • missytoots

Blake didn’t want a stalker on his team

  • koshka

He’ll be an interesting contestant. LOL

  • desiree_chick

Some of these people they are not turning around for, sound better than the ones they already picked. People like Raquel and that Chicken Little look-alike stole some spots IMO.

  • jersey

Geez, maybe if you had told your father you’re gay in person instead on national tv, you could start working on your communication with him.

  • tinawina

I kinda liked him. LOL@ outing yourself on national TV though. Surprise Mom and Dad!

  • TylerWV

Blake let the girl go that sang House that built me and picked this guy? lol. Clean out the wax, blake. I rewatched last weeks episode 3 times. So far, havent seen anything tonight to rewatch at all. It feels too rushed and judges arent interacting so much or they arent showing them.

  • Valentin432

So now we have an answer at what happens if they don’t choose 24 contestants among the auditioneers, they make the rejected come back.

  • blmetsfan

    surprise dad! :X

  • windmills

gangreen29: I didn’t LOVE that girl, but I think she was better than some of the ones chosen.

    ITA.

I did like Julie but nobody’s really impressed me yet. The lack of coach competition’s making tonight less entertaining than last week’s show so far.

  • rayni

They gotta pick some they can cut. That’s what tonight feels like to me.

And Miranda Lambert sure has good taste in men. Whew.

  • koshka

    Are these guys a couple?

  • desiree_chick

Blake let the girl go that sang House that built me and picked this guy? lol. Clean out the wax, blake.

I know, eh? Some of these choices the judges are making they are going to regret. Not so smart pickings tonight, and letting some good ones get away. Hmmm, like Idol, LOL

  • jersey

    I believe so koshka.

  • koshka

Good for Cee Lo. I guess he wasn’t as insulted as Prince. :)

    jersey says:
    05/03/2011 at 10:03 pm
    I believe so koshka.

    Interesting.. lots of out performers.

  • iluvai

I think Blake made a mistake choosing Tyler. It was funny though
    (Blake’s expression).

  • Valentin432

It feels like they stacked their first audition show with their best talent because so far it’s been rough.

  • sr4mjc

Christina finally picked a guy !

  • blmetsfan

Well, up to this point, Javier FTW. lol

  • desiree_chick

Why are we getting 5 seconds of the really good ones? Like really good ones that are better than the ones they have picked tonight that got more screen time? Is this produced by a former Idol executive? LOL

  • Steelers36

Regarding Tyler Robinson, I’d might check the video out later, but what gives MJ? Do you like to celebrate individuals who wear their sexuality on their sleeves? What if they are hetero and do the same? Sexual orientation should not be involved in judging performance quality.

  • Lisa

    OOO BAM, Adam slams Idol

  • Valentin432

    LOLLLLLLLLLLLL
    Dissing American Idol live.

  • kmd

I think the talent has been good so far. They are all diverse and I like that. I like the judges too.

  • koshka

    AI name check!

  • jersey

Taking a direct hit on American Idol!

  • Fullmoon

Lol, Ouch at the Idol dig.

  • gangreen29

Adam’s slam might have made more sense if the contestants haven’t been bad on the average tonight, but whatever I like this show lol.

  • jrain

Irony is the talent so far is not any better or worse than idol

  • iluvai

Some singers may be brought back! DRAMA

Maybe Angela and she won’t pick Blake. ;)

  • koshka

I agree. So far I like this show. It is updated and has a young feel to it. I’m not sure why.. maybe the judges… maybe the change in format.

  • aidancash1

Oh Hillbilly bone. This should get interesting

  • Valentin432

By the look of the last two acts, sure feels like the BGWB will win this year

  • windmills

Good choice by Dia. She has a better chance of advancing being on Blake’s team too. I enjoyed her and I really think Blake will nurture her well.

Stuck Like Glue and Hillbilly Bone on The Voice. Both sounding rough.

  • gangreen29

OMG I think those girls were on American Juniors. I’m embarrassed I watched that show lol. Two people from it were on idol this season too in Hollywood.

  • Fullmoon

It looks like The Voice don’t want to show all their cards by having mediocre performances tonight although I think they’re no worse or better than Idol and the shorter clips look like better contestants that went through.

  • sr4mjc

I agree. So far I like this show. It is updated and has a young feel to it. I’m not sure why.. maybe the judges… maybe the change in format.

LOL.. we have penis comments from Adam and balls from Xtina, poking fun at Idol and open and out contestants before voting starts.

  • desiree_chick

By the look of the last two acts, sure feels like the BGWB will win this year

    Black Guy With…..Bass? LOL

  • rayni

By the look of the last two acts, sure feels like the BGWB will win this year

    Black Guy With…..Bass? LOL

    Big girl With Boobs? LOL

  • lorismile

    He was boring.

  • sma11ie

Adam’s slam might have made more sense if the contestants haven’t been bad on the average tonight

Or if some of the contestants they chose weren’t Idol rejects!

but whatever I like this show lol.

    Also true.

  • Valentin432

Good that Adam is dissing Idol after performing live on it and mentoring/performing on Canadian Idol too.

  • desiree_chick

Blake Shelton clearly not at all impressed with anybody singing his songs or his wife, or else he wouldn’t pick Tyler Robinson over that last country guy.

  • gangreen29

Okay these girls were definitely on american juniors.

  • TylerWV

ewwwwww…dirty old man alert lol. Love ceelo’s voice but hope the gals have their chastity belts handy lol

  • Valentin432

So the talent was so amazing that they couldn’t pick 24 out of them.

But it doesn’t matter since the rejected people are better than american idol winners.

  • GwendolynD

Those last two girls were on American Juniors – the two on the left.

  • jersey

Oh don’t bring back rock voice guy!

  • Vanille

dont sing miranda lambert songs because no offense but her range isn’t exactly impressive.. and blake will never turn around for you..

  • lorismile

This is a cool idea. I bet, for some of them, a change of song will be a help.

  • moadms

OMG. The Tompson girls were on the American Juniors show. I always wondered what happened to them. They were so talented. And what happened to Lukas Rossi? I thought he was supposed to be a contestant on this show.

  • desiree_chick

What happened to Lukas Rossi? Isn’t he suppose to be on?

ETA I guess someone else is wondering the same thing, LOL

  • koshka

Blake Shelton clearly not at all impressed with anybody singing his songs or his wife, or else he wouldn’t pick Tyler Robinson over that last country guy.

I can’t blame him. Think about how many times he probably heard her songs. I bet it is hard to push her voice out of his head when he hears the music.

  • webster

I think Blake has such a strong aversion to suck up that he’d rather have a bad singer to that. Cross genre mentoring could make this show very interesting.

  • sr4mjc

Lukas isn’t on itunes either, I wonder what happened there.

  • gangreen29

I’m not really sure Lukas actually auditioned. I read spoilers about him and JD Fortuna both auditioning, but maybe people were confused?

  • Valentin432

This whole twist makes the chair pointless, anyone should recognize the person by their voice after one song.

  • sunchick

I’m also wondering about Lukas. It’s not our confusion-he was on the promos for the show.

  • koshka

She sounds like fodder to me.

  • brie200

I never thought those Thompson girls were good when they were little kids. Kind of curious how they are now.

FWIW, I’m not even a huge Idol fan here but I’ve seen nothing here to convince me the talent is better than Idol. Give these folks weird restrictive themes and 15 song lists and then see what they can do.

  • TylerWV

    Thought she was baddddddd..

  • missytoots

They’re showing this girl again? They could have shown some other new people

  • blmetsfan

Ugh. They were rejected the first time for a reason!

  • windmills

Valentin432: This whole twist makes the chair pointless, anyone should recognize the person by their voice after one song.

ITA. They’re only hearing 8 voices right? It shouldn’t be that hard.

This awful rocker again!? I enjoyed last week much more.

  • koshka

Give these folks weird restrictive themes and 15 song lists and then see what they can do.

    So true, so true. ;)

  • sr4mjc

Horrible rendition of Adele, good thing to pass again

  • lorismile

I didn’t like that woman before.

    I like this guy

  • koshka

This awful rocker again!? I enjoyed last week much more.

    Who? Mr. Clean?

  • sma11ie

That girl wasn’t good enough. Bald guy was okay.

  • aidancash1

    This show is so entertaining.

  • windmills

That Not Ready To Make Nice performance was actually pretty good. First time I’ve heard that sung by somebody other than the Dixie Chicks that I actually believed it.

  • desiree_chick

    Who? Mr. Clean?

    LOL hahahaha

  • sr4mjc

Country Daughtry dude was so much better than his first audition.

  • pietromatos

i’m finding this episode weak !!!

but sonia rao was great ! cant believe they pass on her…

  • jersey

Yeah, rocker dude was much better this week than last.

  • lorismile

Idol gives second chances when the judges ask them to sing another song at audition. Just saying…..

Adam got a second chance after Rock With You.

  • gangreen29

I liked this girl better the first time.

  • lorismile

    I don’t like her…

  • iluvai

Angela! I like her. She did sound better the first time around and I’m glad she ended up with Adam.

  • PamReid

Cee Lo calls Pink a friend. Adam gives him sh*t “Let me pick up that name where you dropped it….”

That was the best part of tonight’s show. LOL – loved that.

  • sr4mjc

    Haley did RITD much better.

  • aidancash1

So I guess that girl really wasnt country she just wanted to jump Blake lol

  • sma11ie
Valentin432: This whole twist makes the chair pointless, anyone should recognize the person by their voice after one song.

ITA. They’re only hearing 8 voices right? It shouldn’t be that hard.

Hah, that’s what I was asking on Twitter. That’s what I thought too! Not really so blind, ha.

  • lorismile

I really can’t wait to see the judges interact with the contestants and see the advice they give them

Wow, this next round looks cool.

  • iluvai

Does anyone know how many people the judges each eliminate before the vote goes to the audience?

  • Valentin432

Does anyone know how many people the judges each eliminate before the vote goes to the audience?

Half of the contestants, from 32 to 16 I suppose

  • gangreen29

Does anyone know how many the judges each eliminate before the vote goes to the audience?

Half their team, so 4 per judge.

  • windmills

No recap of the teams tonight? I liked when they did that last week.

I’m still watching the show next week but I didn’t enjoy it as much as last week. Only a few people I liked and it felt like the curiosity factor for the coaches was gone and they were just looking to fill up their teams. There were only a couple of good critiques. I think one from Christina and one from Blake. Maybe Cee Lo had one too.

  • tinawina

I’m curious about the battle rounds thing. I’ll TiVo it.

  • iluvai

Thanks. So in about 4 weeks there will be a top 16. I think the rounds will be very interesting. (hope)

  • gangreen29

Thanks. So in about 4 weeks there will be a top 16. I think the rounds will be very interesting. (hope)

Yeah. And then in the finals, someone from each team goes home until there is one person on each team left and the finale is 4 people.

  • BeachBum

What happened to Lukas Rossi? I thought he was supposed to be one of the contestants.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Never cared for Lukas, so won’t miss him.

This show has a lot of promise. I think Mark Burnett knows how to run a show. I miss Rock Star, but the concept was too difficult to replicate. And has been bands are just that.

ETA: It would’ve been nice to see Jordis Unga show up on this show, though. Wonder what happened to her.

  • damroberts744

I’m 95% sure that the Thompson girls were on the show American Juniors way back when…so you’d be right.

  • colelette

“What happened to Lukas Rossi? I thought he was supposed to be one of the contestants.”

Wondered the same thing. Didn’t see him there at all?

  • damroberts744

Also-sorry Adam, but this talent is not as good as the talent on idol…not even close!

  • Altuc

I was looking forward to Lucas Rossi….Were all 20 contestants chosen tonight? I counted 19 above (missed part of the show).

  • BeachBum

Adam WAS absolutely correct… At least as far as this season of AI goes. A person cannot listen to the iTunes tracks and say that AI has more talent then contestants on The Voice!! This season’s AI contestants are top shelf Karaoke singers at best!! Rock on…

  • PamReid

I have been watching the show on DVR and haven’t read any of the comments on the thread, so if this has already been said, I apologize for the repetition. I CANNOT BELIEVE that these contestants actually thought they would impress Blake Shelton by performing Miranda Lambert songs (2 of them), esp. “The House That Built Me” since that song is so special and was actually written for Blake. DUMB, DUMB, DUMB. Then, the guy who sang the Blake Shelton song – what was he thinking? The worst though was the duo with “Stuck Like Glue” – as if ANYONE could hope to impress Blake by covering Sugarland and Jennifer Nettle’s unbelievable voice. I have to believe that all of these people really wanted to make Blake’s team. Just dumb!

  • Grammie Kari

That remark made by Adam regarding American Idol surprised me a bit until I remembered the commercial addressing the American Idol judges.

I swear I saw Raquel Castro try out for Idol. Either that, or someone who looks like her?

I missed most of the first hour. Tonight was my first viewing per se and it looks interesting. I wrote Nigel about getting Reba to co-mentor – he waited and blew it. I will watch next week and see what happens.

LOL. Someone on twitter mentioned CeeLo’s abnormally short arms and now I can’t stop looking at them.

He really does have T-Rex arms, lol. I’ve been laughing about them on Twitter too.

  • chrislongisland

I thought the talent on last week’s premiere episode was MUCH better. My two real favorites are still as follows and both were on last week’s show:

    1. Xenia: She is an actual FRESH voice and her live and studio versions of Breakeven are just AMAZING;

and 2. Javier Colon: Not a fresh face and has a record deal past, but man he is just so talented that I can’t deny his brilliance with the Time After Time cover.

  • chrislongisland

Also, Blake Shelton now has a new fan in me. I downloaded his REAL version of Hillbilly Bone as soon as the show ended tonight, even though I am not usually a country music consumer. LOVE the track.

  • CindyM

He really does have T-Rex arms, lol. I’ve been laughing about them on Twitter too.

Well, sma11ie, CeeLo’s t-rex arms coupled with Adam (Lambert) and Claude Kelly’s dinosaur jokes on twitter the other night…it’s been a riot on my feed.

  • Miss Blue

Valentin432: This whole twist makes the chair pointless, anyone should recognize the person by their voice after one song.

If you noticed, the judges were wearing the same clothes as last week. This whole 4 hours was taped on one day, because there is NO way Christina would have worn the same dress 2 days in a row.

So I’m thinking these guys heard so many voices that by the time it got to the reruns, they were not able to connect a voice with a face. Particularly since so many of them changed up genres.

  • brie200

Admitting I actually watched American Juniors back in the day (I plead insanity), I thought those Thompson girls sucked even back then. If I have to see anyone from that show here, what ever happened to adorable little Danielle White? The only one I’ve seen since and who has found some sort of success, though primarily in acting, is Lucy Hale (of Pretty Little Liars).

  • claudette

I didn’t watch until 10 but I thought the talent was great – much better than Idol had in top 11 this year (best talent to me didn’t make it that far). I liked the show a lot last week, but thought the talent was weak. Maybe Idol being so weak right makes me appreciate The Voice.

However, I feel disconnected to the participants. I’m drawn to some Idols left and will vote, but really don’t think they are all that talented. Ha. Just a game.

I DO think Scotty’s voice is much better than any country singer I heard on the show, but I can’t watch Scotty. (I’m sure people can work with him after the show). The Voice made me appreciate Scotty’s talent more. I guess there’s no Jacob and his talent, but The Voice had better talent overall.

  • Grammie Kari

It looks like this is the same Raquel Castro that played the daughter of Ben Affleck and JLo in Jersey Girl. That would explain why she didn’t try out for American Idol. I liike her and think she could go a long way in this competittion.

  • sue

Thanks Grammie Kari for clearing that up. Raquel Castro looked so familiar when she got on stage, I was like hmmm? lolz I couldn’t put a finger on it. She is really cute and I think she could do well. They have a lot of great singers on here but also some fodders. Each coach has to cut half of their team anyway. Where the heck is that Lukas Rossi guy? A lot of these contestants are just rejects from other shows and failed careers. Oh well everyone deserves a second chance.

  • stwbcross

Wasn’t as good as last week. I can’t believe they had to recycle contestants. lol! I guess we already know who will be the first ones to get booted from their teams.

You’d think that they could have thrown us a bone and found a few ugly people who had amazing voices so that we could at least play along with illusion that this is all about the voice.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I thought the big gay guy who sang CeeLo was good. He wasn’t cute. ETA: Unless you’re into bears. ;-)

Thought the most attractive girl didn’t make it… her vocals were limited. Sonia. Maybe CeeLo will hook her up. ;-)

  • sue

LOL, that’s what I was thinking. Well there were some fugly people that were picked but a lot of pretty people too. The Voice should be called Recycled Idol. :) It’s going to happen on X-Factor and America’s Got Talent too. I like a few of these contestants and the show is still somewhat kind of fun. It’s still no idol to me.

  • bjames

I FREAKED OUT the second they showed those American Juniors girls. Knew it was them right away, even though they looked so different. My family thought I was nuts until I grabbed my laptop and looked them up.

  • http://www.last.fm/user/RemusL/ RemusL

It’s still no idol to me.

And a good thing imo. So far, in just 2 episodes, this show has been more entertaining than Idol has been this season and last. Also, most of the performances have been very good. I can’t say that about Idol.

  • jessewayne

I was just reading the recap (didn’t get to see the show) and was embarassed I knew the Thompson twins by name only. I too wish Danell White would do something, because she was the most talented, and seemingly most nice…and yet was the last picked. I looked her up on youtube and still so good.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I had to chuckle because when I think Thompson Twins, I’m not thinking of reality talent shows. I am getting old. LOL.

Ok, first time watcher here. I am really enjoying this! I like the format. I think this show could give Idol a run for its money.

It will be interesting to see how the competition develops. I’m enjoying all of the judging as well. I like the joking and Adam has no filter. LOL.

  • paperboating

Few thoughts, I find it funny that they keep on repeating that these contestants are the best undiscovered talent in America. Hmm… well I recognized Dia, whom use to be in “Meg & Dia” (they were signed to a major way back when). Also disappointment that we didn’t get to see Lucas R.

The first episode’s talent was much stronger. None of them were really amazing. A lot of the singers were quite pitchy as well.

Another note, I didn’t enjoy that the contestants got second chances either. It would of been better to see more talent than re-fried ones.

  • jtgraffix

    man taylor grew up…

    they’re still pretty terrible though…

  • Grammie Kari

Now we hear that “So You Think You Can Dance” and “America’s Got Talent” will be back the last week of May. Is there such a thing as talent related Reality Show overload?

So, Adam made two references to American Idol? Hmmm…

  • earthy

I’m glad Casey Weston got through. She is a dark horse in this and the tones in her voice just really built up her song as it went beautifully.

  • karrahbrooke

Tori and Taylor Thompson – 17 & 19 – “Stuck Like Glue” – Twins finishing each other’s sentences. The duo act like they just fell off the turnip truck, but I bet they didn’t. (In fact, these two competed on American Juniors. Ugh)

OMG I missed their names and I didn’t even realize that was them! Confession: I totally loved watching American Juniors at the time. God they were like 9 and 11 at that time. Crazy.

  • karrahbrooke

It looks like this is the same Raquel Castro that played the daughter of Ben Affleck and JLo in Jersey Girl.

Whoa I thought she looked familiar! That’s crazy. These revelations are blowing my mind tonight. I’m still loving the show though. I hope it’s still as good next week now that the blind auditions are over.

Haley did not do it better than Vicci Martinez did it last week. Last week was much better than this week.

I actually think Adam was right…the talent is much better than Idol. Granted they were recruited.

Vicci Martinez was invited to the second round on Idol’s first season but turned them down because she thought the contract was too restricting. She put out a fantastic album in 2003, and 4 more since.

She is better than anyone on Idol this year…look her up on itunes, her albums are fantastic.

The Voice should be called Recycled Idol. It’s going to happen on X-Factor and America’s Got Talent too.

Hmmm, well, who’s zooming whom? AI has had Thia Megia, a semifinalist from America’s Got Talent; Jordin Sparks, from America’s Most Talented Kids (she even did that Martina McBride song on that show at age 14, she’d been performing it for years by the time she wowed folks on Idol with it). I’m sure there are more… All these shows will recycle each others contestants.

I had to chuckle because when I think Thompson Twins, I’m not thinking of reality talent shows. I am getting old. LOL.

LOL I know what you mean. I saw those Thompson Twins live in concert 25+ yrs ago.

Good point, lolz! I guess they are all recycled, so has America ran out of new undiscovered talent then? I guess once in awhile you run across a gem that has never had a major record deal or anything. It just seems like there are a lot more plants and experienced singers on The Voice, maybe because a lot of these guys are older than 28. It’s all good, we shall see how well this show does in the next couple of weeks. I still like it, mostly for the coaches. :)

  • MayMirabella

Also-sorry Adam, but this talent is not as good as the talent on idol…not even close!

It depends on the season. I would argue the talent on the Voice overall is better , voice wise, than most of the Season 9 contestants. It all depends on the Idol Season as after 10 seasons, it is only natural some seasons seem to have better voices than other seasons overall.

  • sue

The people we don’t turn around for could be on American Idol…but we’re looking for something extra – Adam Levine. Melinda Doolittle asked me on twitter what Adam said, I repeated it and added that he obviously never heard her sing. Melinda would effing blow away every single person who auditioned tonight off that stage.

Yeah that comment from Adam Levine was kind of uncalled for. There has been a lot of talented singers that have came out of idol. Isn’t Adam buddy buddy with Blake Lewis during Season 6 and he cleared a Maroon 5 song for Blake? I am sure he has heard Melinda from the same season. I think he said it just to say it, he is just a smart ass. :)

  • Hazehel

After all the praise heaped on the supposedly superior voices of the contestant in The Voice, I actually found most of them quite disappointing and pedestrian. There is probably only one I find interesting this week (Tim Mahoney), another two from last week (can’t remember their names, a girl with a quirky voice and a guy), not a great haul considering that this is practically a show full of plants. Most of the contestants chosen this week won’t get past the Hollywood round on Idol. I doubt I will keep an eye on this show with great interest.

Talent-wise this season of Idol is actually more interesting and diverse, just a pity that some of them didn’t quite live up to their promise shown early in the season. Scotty and James however are starting to show they could be worthy winner.

  • Studio57

Last night was kind of a let down for me. Love the format, love love love the judges, but the contestants are same ole same ole for me. Not a one stood out enough to keep me interested but I just might watch anyway because I love those judges. Ceelo is like the creepy uncle, yet cool, and his dinosaur arms fascinate me, lol. I am seriously in love with Blake Shelton and want to actually try listening to country music for the first time. Christina is a sweetheart- who knew? And Adam Levine is YUM.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Yeah that comment from Adam Levine was kind of uncalled for. There has been a lot of talented singers that have came out of idol. I think he said it just to say it, he is just a smart ass. :)

Not only that, but Kris Allen opened for a number of concerts for Maroon 5. Even without these connections, it wasn’t a cool thing for Adam to say. Also the fact that there are Idol retreads who have progressed further on “The Voice” than they did on Idol, contradicts Adam’s claim.

  • koshka

Yeah that comment from Adam Levine was kind of uncalled for. There has been a lot of talented singers that have came out of idol.

Just wait until the Xfactor starts and the fur starts to fly from both ends.

  • Nina1

Wow! This show put its best talent packages up front! The vocals were a little pitchy this week, but there were still some interesting contestants.

  • tomr

Not nearly as good as last week. Noone that all four judges wanted. They edited in the best contestants for the premier edition last week. Saw a bunch of cannon fodder this week. Actually saw Adam and Blake “disappointed” when they saw the contestant they chose for the first time (Tim & Tyler)- those guys are gonners for sure. I find it interesting that they’ve chosen to put it out there right away that a contestant is gay. (Idol likes to try to keep that under wrap) I think it would be better if there was no audience there to influence the judges. Who knows…each judge might be getting a signal from someone in the audience who can actually see the persons trying out. Will see what the future brings. I feel disappointed this week overall.

  • lucy

The Thompsons impersonating naive, pig-raising country girls were kind of hilarious and kind of appalling at the same time. And those curls! Wow.

  • jpfan

I agree with your comments. The talent was kind of meh last night but the coaches are still fun to watch so I’m sticking with this show.
They’re all miles better than Tyler and JLo.

It does make sense that the best talent went first though because of the format of the show. Could it be possible that the coaches instead of the producers are actually picking their teams. ;)

  • Allison

Wow I didn’t expect to see the Thompson sisters there. The blonde one looks exactly like she did on American juniors. only all grown up. My favorite on AJrs. was Danielle White.

Danielle White actually made it to hollywood on idol this season, I liked her too, maybe she will try out again!

    Thanks for that info.

I aso recognized Emily [Valentine]. Does that mean I watch too much Idol, lol?

About the contestants – I thought the girl named Dia had a really good voice.

  • musicality

Lukas Rossi was so excited and a lot of his fans tuned in just to see him. I know I did. That’s too bad. That guy Blake (the one that sort of looks like Daughtry and has a better voice than Daughtry) is his friend.

I thought that remark Adam Levine made was funny!! :) I laughed when he said it. Some good talent has come from American Idol in the past but I see what he means. Sorry but there have been only a couple of winners from AI that are “special”. That girl last week who was really pretty but a slightly better than average voice that no one turned around for would have went far on Idol (Pia). The one Cee Lo was disappointed he didn’t pick.

  • kmd

“Just wait until the Xfactor starts and the fur starts to fly from both ends.”

That is so true. I thought Adam was funny. AI is just not that well thought of by many artists. I like this show.

  • DogBitez

Also, there’s some super dishy gossip about how she began dating her husband–who was married at the time–when she sang backup and he played guitar in Carrie’s band. WHOOPS.

I think you have the right word there… “gossip”. Not worth including in your blog. Let’s say her husband was the best and nicest guy in the world… wow, she’s a pig! Let’s say her husband was an abusive and demoralizing womanizer… wow, he’s such a pig!

Yeah, that bit of gossip you mentioned says nothing. MJ, you’re above that. Leave that cow doodoo to the tabloids… print and online.

  • justshootme

Still loving this show, but last week was better for me, I think mostly because there was more competition for contestants between the judges. This was a little boring with only one coach turning around many times.

I’m looking forward to next week, the boxing ring looks ~interesting. I didn’t realize the two contestants would be singing at the same time (duh me). I’m getting flashes of RuPaul’s Lip Sync For Your Life, lol. Hopefully nobody pulls a Mimi Imfurst and slings their opponent over their shoulder. On the other hand, that might be entertaining.

I’m glad Casey Weston got through. She is a dark horse in this and the tones in her voice just really built up her song as it went beautifully.

Me too! I’m not a country fan in general, but I liked her folky sound, something very pleasing about it. Plus she seemed “likable”, lol. Hope she’s not fodder. I found this ytube of her covering If I Die Young. She sounds really good on it.

I am digging The Voice. I love the judges–all of them. Regardless of whether any of these people are plants…and what does that really mean? A producer has heard them sing or heard through the grapevine that they can sing and thinks they deserve a chance to be heard? I’d rather have plants that can sing than Idol plants who dress up like transformers. ;)

As to Adam’s comment about AI, that’s really on the editors, isn’t it? Just because he said it didn’t mean they had to use it.

I’m interested in the battle rounds–I guess we’ll all see what happens. :)

Wow. Talk about putting words in my mouth. Did I call either one of them names? No…actually you did that. lol.

I simply said they started dating when one of them was married–something that happens all the time.

  • brie200

Danielle White actually made it to hollywood on idol this season, I liked her too, maybe she will try out again!

Thanks for the info! I knew there were some American Juniors rejects who had tried out for Idol, but I didn’t know she did too. Actually, I was kind of unsure if she was even allowed to since technically Danielle (and the annoying Thompson girls) were among the “winners”. Though I can’t imagine the Thompson girls haven’t tried out for Idol too then.

Also, while I rememeber Emily from AI–you cannot call yourself Emily Valentine without me immediately thinking of 90210. I have to imagine that is on purpose?

Adam’s slam might have made more sense if the contestants haven’t been bad on the average tonight,

ITA. I hadn’t planned on watching this show at all, but at 9:30 last night I turned on the TV (& apparently had watched NBC news the last time my TV was on, so this show popped on my screen) & I decided to watch what was left of it. I wasn’t impressed.

It appears as though Adam talks out of both sides of his mouth given these tweets from August where he is dissing reality TV, & shortly thereafter signs on to become a part of it:

    8/21/10
    @adamlevineAdam Levine
I’m not sure what’s worse for the environment. global warming or reality television…

    @adamlevineAdam Levine
Maybe we could cancel out their collectively heinous effect on the earth by creating a reality tv show ABOUT global warming?

  • Chicagolaw

I just have to say, Blake Shelton is freaking adorable! I had no idea. Country is absolutely not my thing, but I might check him out.

  • Mary102

Well, after I was kind of dismissive of The Voice last week (I just didn’t want to waste THAT much of my week on multiple singing shows, lol) I decided to give it a shot this week. My friends seemed to like it a lot last week, and I’ve been more frustrated with idol lately. lol

In general, while I don’t think the singing was THAT spectacular, I do think that the concept, the execution, the coaches, etc, are all way more modern and interesting than idol. Idol feels like a clunky, behemoth dinosaur in comparison, while The Voice seems more geared toward finding quirky, unique, performers to fit on radio today.

I will say, though, that I think they miss just ONE important ingredient with the concept of the show. While the focus is clearly The Voice, hence the title and the blind audition rounds, I think, from the get go, the show should be about finding someone with that IT factor, which is about more than just a voice. If they want to find a new superstar, that person will have charisma on stage, personality, looks, and the voice may not even be the main characteristic. So IDK. I think that’s the only mark they’re missing in terms of being more relevant than AI.

But I definitely really loved the coaches – WAAAAYYY better than the current idol crap-fest, that’s for sure! And their banter was so amusing!

Good point, lolz! I guess they are all recycled, so has America ran out of new undiscovered talent then?

If you are serious about your craft then you should bedn out there getting exposure any way you can. I have no problem with them coming from other venues or having CD’s out etc. Archie was on Star Search. Allison won Mexico’s version of American Idol. It annoys me when I hear interviews with Idols that say oh I was here to accompany my brother, friend, sister etc and decided to sing for the heck of it. Especially when there are so many would struggle to try and make it.
Idol rejects people based on looks all the times. They will allow one token geek or ugly person through each season (always a boy). With The Voice it is about the voice. That ‘bear” who sang yesterday had a fantastic voice. Some of those females would have never got through idol because they are not cute enough. Have you ever seen an unattractive white female on idol?

This show is so…convoluted. But it is Tuesday night, and nothing much is on television. Next week they move the show to 10:00 pm (why NBC? Dumb) and I’ll have to say soooo long. We are in bed at ten, and no, it is not worth taping.
I wish they would bring back Rock Star…now that was a show I loved.
Something I also love: Melinda Doolittle. (Not off topic, MJ mentioned her in her recap) Saw her at a BBQ outdoor concert last year and she was FANTASTIC. A tiny little firecracker of beautiful, powerful vocals.

This show comes across, to me, as more scripted than any Idol! I find Blake to have a huge ego and for me, he is kind of unlikable. Love Cee Lo and Christina. I like Adam although he has that “elitist” thing about his personality. His comment, about Idol made me laugh, because as much as I love Adam Levine, he does not have the best voice around by any means!
Now, with all that being said, the show is entertaining. I think the Battle Rounds will be the best. Then it just turns into another Idol, right?

One thing for sure, they are a lot more current than Idol.

    Yes!!!
Why does Idol have so much trouble getting songs released and Glee and now The Voice doesn’t?? Have we ever heard a P!NK song on Idol?

  • gangreen29

I’m not really looking forward to the battle rounds actually. I don’t like that they sing at the same time. That is basically forcing them to belt, because they have to be heard over the other one. I think maybe they should have stretched the blind auditions into 4 episodes, and made the battle rounds two episodes.

Does anyone know how this is going to work next week? It’s switching to 10pm so that means a one hour episode. If each of the four teams has four faceoffs that would mean 16 faceoffs total. Are they going from 32 to 16 contestants in just one one hour episode? It seems like it would be crazy rushed to present 16 faceoffs and all the hoopla involved in just an hour. How about once they get to live shows at 16, is it one elimination per week? Again, seems like early rounds would be really rushed with so many singers in an hour. idk.

I read that it is 4 episodes of the battle rounds, so 4 battles per episode, with 4 going home each episode until there is a final 16. During the final 16, 4 people go home each episode, 1 from each team. The finale is a final 4, with 1 person per coach.

  • justshootme

Thanks gangreen. So probably one matchup from each team for each episode of the battle rounds, that makes more sense. And then four eliminations per week in the live rounds is gonna be like lop, lop, lop. Wonder if ratings will hold up by then.

Just had to say that I love this show! Didn’t even plan to watch it, but caught a few minutes last week and was hooked. What I really love so far is the coaches! They’re got a group of currently successful recording artists – who have great chemistry. I love the banter and love watching them as they listen (blindly) to these contestants. Really looking forward to watching the coaches work with their teams.

I really like the idea of this tv show, too…. judging the voice and not the look of a contestant or whether the singer fits some pre-defined image.

All in all … a big fan, so far.

  • bean99

I enjoyed the show although not as much as the week before. I think they must have always planned to bring certain ones back that the coaches were sorry to have passed by. I liked Sonia much better the week before but the rest seemed better last night.

Not sorry they didn’t show Lukas Rossi. I didn’t like him on Rockstar Supernova (loved Magni & Toby). I was thrown off by how much the one guy (the med student?) looks like Kevin Covais from Idol.

I’m not looking forward to them weeding down to 4. I wouldn’t mind the sing off if they sang separately. It’s hard to shine when you’re trying to sing over someone.

I didn’t plan to watch & caught some of last night’s show and had the exact opposite reaction, so I guess last week’s show was much better. The singing last night was off key, overall not great, and there wasn’t much banter to speak of amongst the judges – just general comments.

I also find it funny that looks aren’t supposed to play a part, but some of the first comments from the judges after they turned around seemed to be about looks, and some contestants they initially passed on due to voice they commented they were sorry after they saw their look, then picked them in the 2nd chance round. Next week they cut their teams in 1/2? I’ll be surprised if the least attractive vocalists don’t go home.

  • damroberts744

I have to disagree with quite a few of you, this is by no means an original format as far as a tv show goes (they basically borrowed the X-Factor’s premise before it premiered in the USA) and while singing is subjective I think the talent pool here is much less talented as a group than the Idol kids. I think Javier and Xenia were both good, but really I haven’t seen one person who would have been a shoe-in for the top 24 or even Hollywood in general on idol. Most of these contestants probably wouldn’t get past producers IMO.

The format, while not new to some of us, is fresh enough for the general American audience that its doing popular, but in all honesty if American Idol were to give us this type of group in their semi-final round I think we’d all be saying “wtf?”

  • stwbcross

Am I the only one having a problem with viewing Dia’s video? also, tried to view the AI videos of Emily but with no success?

Yes, it’s been obvious since last week’s premiere. I don’t think that any viewers have been fooled into thinking this is only about the “Voice”. lol!

I thought the talent pool was pretty poor here. Was REALLY hoping with all the great voices we have seen come and go on Idol that we would have seen a better turn out. But almost everyone made me cringe at more than one point in their songs. If this is all they have, I think I’m tuning out.

  • tinawina

I was wondering about that too LOL

So that’s 4 battle rounds, 3 voting rounds, and a finale week(?). 8 more weeks. Basically this is a 2 1/2 month show. It makes sense if you are trying to work with successful current artists to keep the time commitment short… it was probably 3/4 months total for them.

I think the talent pool here is much less talented as a group than the Idol kids.

I think the first episode found more cool/modern voices than what is typically on Idol but this one fell back into a lesser version of what we usually have on AI for the most part. It will be interesting to see what kind of singers they scout next season. I think the show works best when it can keep an edgier vibe.

I agree with everything you said.
And I was shocked to see the preview that 2 people will sing at the same time. How can the judges hear the tone of their voices
    ?

  • stwbcross

Really, Adam, the talent you pass up on the Voice is only good enough for American Idol?

Right on MJ! We can trash idol on everything else but when it comes to voices, all the AI winners (with the exception of last year’s, but I’ll substitute the runner up here) can sing circles around most of the top artists in the music industry today.

I am really late to the game. Enjoyed this ep but the talent wasn’t as good as round1. Round 2 had a lot of Idol level talent get through. And I mean like fodder level talent. No one I am really excited about. All my faves are so far still in round 1. :) Not sure about these battle rounds. We shall see! Already have my dvr set!
