The Voice 7 Battle Rounds 1 – Take The Polls!

The Voice - Season 7

The Battle Rounds have begun on The Voice 7! What did you think? Some of the best talent out of the Top 48 were presented tonight, which resulted in some pretty entertaining battles!

I would say Pharrell made the right pick choosing Elyjuh Rene over Maiya Sykes. I’m not surprised Maiya wasn’t stolen. Older contestants, even those with good voices, tend to struggle for votes.  I was also happy that Adam chose Chris Jamison over Jonathan Wyndham.  Chris has an interesting vibe. He could be a dark horse. Or maybe that’s just my wishful thinking.

The battle of the powerhouses, Jean Kelley and Sugar Joans was pretty evenly matched. That battle seemed destined to end in a steal. So Gwen keeps Sugar, and Pharrell takes Jean.

Blake’s two country boys posed a dilemma.  Both have good voices.  James David Carter is the most marketable and radio ready of the two, while Craig Wayne Boyd has more soul and heft.  I’m glad Craig was stolen–but by GWEN? Who was babbling about how she wanted to dress him up and make him over? I know she was sort of kidding, but I have to wonder if she knows what the hell to do with him.

Here was my personal disappointment of the night. Amanda Lee Peters pretty much swept the floor with quirky boylet, Taylor John Williams on “Jolene.” Yet, Taylor won the battle.  His performance of “Heatless” in the blind auditions wasn’t all that unique. I’M SORRY PHARRELL BUT IT WASN’T. But let’s face it, the quirky white guys who play guitar–especially those who flip songs–do well on these singing shows. He’ll go farther than Amanda and her rock/country growl ever would have.  Gwen hemmed and hawwed around her decision. She knew she was picking the less talented singer.  I was disappointed Amanda wasn’t stolen.

The Luke Wade vs Griffin battle was a BIG surprise. I was completely underwhelmed by the Adult Contemporary stylings of Griffin in his audition. He was a poor guy’s Buble, basically. But what the hell happened to him in rehearsal for his battle? He came out fierce and actually gave the talented Luke a run for his money! He was more soulful than I remember him. I think I’m going to give Pharrell’s adviser, Alicia Keys, the credit. She’s a great vocal coach and managed to get the best out of both.  The soulful Luke deserved to win the battle, but I ain’t mad that Griffin was stolen by Blake.

So here you go kids. Take the polls!  Click to Read Kelly’s Recap and watch performance videos. And we’ll see you tomorrow night, same time and same place.
