I actually hope Matt and Scott do not use the piano this time. The people who were able to play the piano last year (Brooke, Archie) did not use it this many times in a row.

And if Danny sings Nickelback, that will just add to the list of the things I don’t like about him.

Kris singing Apologize can work, I’d like to hear that.

I also have no suggestions for Adam… I think he can sing anything. I am just excited for his performance and what he’s gonna do next.

I was hoping Matt sang something from The Fray. He would kill “You Found Me” but if that’s not the theme, well no.
Maybe some other song from The Fray. “Look After You” is awesome.

I’d love Matt to sng Apologize or Here Without You by 3 Doors Down (if it’s on the list). Unlike a previous poster I want Matt to be on the piano. It’s what he does best and who he is as an artist. I have no problem with him using the piano every week. You wouldn’t see Elton John or Billy Joel off of their piano much and they are superstars!

Hm. I don’t think Kris quite has the range for “Apologize.” To do that song justice IMO you need amazing falsetto and runs…but I think “You’re Beautiful” would be very nice from him.

Since Matt is the only one I really care about this season….here’s my thoughts.

I agree that Matt should be on the piano this week. Unlike Brooke and David last year, Matt is as good a pianist as he is a vocalist, it’s never a crutch for him. He should be able to showcase his current vocals this week with something along the lines of The Fray. I hope he rocks it!

This is tough! I think Anoop will pick up the pace this week with some JT or Maroon 5. Megan with her “unusual” voice almost HAS to do some Rihanna. I can see Matt or Kris singing “How to Save a Life” by the Fray. Allison can rock Pink’s “So What”. Lil could attempt Alicia Keys “No One”. How about “Breaking Free” from HSM for Scott?! LOL I can never figure Adam out, so I will be pleasantly surprised. Maybe he will reveal a rapping talent and bust out “Low”. He seems to be able to do it all. I can see Danny with some Nickelback, outside of that, this might be a difficult week for him.

I kinda want Adam to sing “Bleeding Love.” And I think “Apologize” would be a good pick for him too.

Hmm, shouldn’t The Fray be on Matt’s list of songs to avoid? They don’t really fit in the blues/r&b box the judges shoved him in the week he attempted Coldplay.

This would be a good week for Allison to take on a ballad. Maybe “Big Girls Don’t Cry”?

ETA: BUT, if last week was any indication, Matt should be at the piano. For me, that performance took a huge nose dive when he got up and tried to dance, sing, move, whatever. So yeah, piano.

I think that Anoop is in a precarious position. The judges want him to go upbeat but I don’t think he can successfully do something upbeat. The problem is, just like Matt is with his piano, if he does something mellow or slow, he’s going to maybe look one-note. I’d like to be proven wrong, however.

Anyway, along that theme, I saw a great suggesting along this lines for Matt over on Pulse. The Fray did a cover of Kanye’s “Heartless” which I think he could borrow and be seen as an artist (you seem to get the artist label on this show if you can find interesting covers). The Fray’s Cover of Heartless.

I think Anoop has to sing something upbeat this week because his last two songs have been pretty slow. Adam already has nice variety, so he can sing whatever he likes. Megan will probably pick something “quirky”. Maybe “The Sweet Escape”. Too bad Norman wasn’t still on the show. He would probably tackle “My Humps”. Scott should sing something lively, but he won’t.

This week is probably the best opportunity of the whole season for the Idol kids to sound current and uniquely marketable. Please, no retreads that have already been covered on the show or were immortalized by previous contestants.

I am most interested in Adam’s selection and invested in it being successful. As much as I’m sure he would shine on Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah, it’s on the iTunes list because of Jason Castro’s unforgettable, iconic performance.

This week the judges will expect Adam to demonstrate his recording identity and relevance. The two most frequent song suggestions I have read are Don’t Stop Believing by Journey and Crazy by Gnarls Barkley. It could be tricky for Adam to make either choice sound fresh since the first seems dated and he has performed the second repeatedly. However, if Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo would grant permission, I hope Adam jumps on it.

In addition to Buckley, Adam’s range and falsetto remind me of Matt Bellamy of Muse. After last week’s acoustic arrangement, some electric guitar would be a nice change. Supermassive Black Hole is definitely current, thanks to the “Twilight” hype, but Starlight or Time Is Running Out would be better vocal showcases.

Looking at the list, I still think contemporary top 40 sucks, so I hope that Adam will surprise me with an irresistible interpretation that blows everyone away again. Otherwise, I will keep wishing for new wave week with Bowie or Morrissey as the guest mentor. :tongue3_tb:

Oh he still is all over stage I saw him both in Cleveland and Michigan the last time he was here but he is the piano man and is mostly at his piano. What I meant was no one would complain if Billy or Elton stayed at their piano’s. There is no reason why Matt needs to either. I guess I don’t understand why anyone feels an instrument as a crutch for me it just solidfies that the person is more of a well rounded musician. It just adds to the performance and IMO is more impressive.

Either did So Small but he made it his own. He can do the same with the Fray. He doesn’t sound anything like Isacc Slade. He can put a R&B spin on it. However I think Apologize by One Republic fits him more.

ETA: Oh and I am a huge Billy Joel fan. He is my favorite solo artist and along with 3 Doors Down the best concert I have ever been too. Both the River of Dreams tour and the most current one. I’d love for Matt to take on a Billy Joel song. I’d also love it if Billy Joel was a mentor this season and they had a Billy Joel theme!

I would love to see Adam or Matt sing something by Kings of Leon. I think this version would be an amazing moment for Matt. It would also help with the lack of personality that people are talking about. Could be an “idol moment” like Adam had last week.

It went to number 1 on the UK download chart, but not the US. It all depends on what the definition of this theme is.

I’m not sure what Adam could add to a Mika song. Better to Mika-ize some other song.

I really think that the trick to doing well on a current theme like this is to re-arrange a song. If you sing a song in the original genre, you will be compared unfavorably to the original (which has the benifit of studio musicians, sound technicians that know what they are doing, multiple takes, auto-tune, no pre-judging nerves and being the original). If you can re-arrange the song into a new genre (and it makes sense. No polka versions of “SexyBack”, please), you will be seen as an artist.

TheRealLife – gotcha! A Billy Joel theme, hummmm…. Interesting. Doubtful, but cool idea.

I really fear this week will be horrible. As others have suggested. Current is current. Making it current? Tough. Singing it straight? Karaoke hell. I hope I’m surprised by at least one person (and if only one, I hope it’s Adam. He’s set the bar pretty high for himself though…)

Last week I actually picked the right song for Adam, this week I have no choice at the moment. So far I’ve not been disappointed one iota, so surprise me Adam.

“These Boots Are Made For Walking” would fit her range and keep her in another week. She’ll probably choose something way outside her range, though.

I am all for current, but everyone should remember that songs with very repetitive choruses and/or lyrics, or very little melody and a monotonous beat, come off sooo badly on Idol. I mean, “Sexyback”?

A lot of recent hits have also been very studio-processed, and these kids gotta sing them live, with a live band and no studio trappings. And a lot of these songs are also quite racy for primetime. Hmmm….Snoop Dogg anyone?

My suggestion is to choose songs with the most melodic hooks available in this category. But I’m sort of a Top of the Pops drop-out since hip-hop/rap and variations of them took over, and really memorable singer-songwriter stuff got relegated to the myspace fringes.

If it is Top 100, there’s a fair amount to work with in terms of variety, and perhaps even melody. But what I’ve sampled of the No. 1 downloads in the list MJ linked mostly sounds like undistinguished shlock to me, very dependent on a sexy young girl/guy selling it with a video.

Oh dear. I’m getting too old for Idol…..

I think I have a different idea for Adam. It is a song popular now by Rascal Flats but written by Chris Sligh. Chris’s take on the song is decidedly not country and with the added range of Adam, it would be a change up and a “moment” for Adam. Adam w2ould start with the second verse.

I guess that’s where our opinions differ. You think he is hiding behind his piano and I think it adds to his performance. It is much more difficult to play the piano and sing than it is to just sing. Especially for Matt because he doesn’t read music and just plays by ear. So he not only has to learn the lyrics but he has to learn the music as well. To me that is much more impressive than someone sitting on a stool and singing. But I love piano guys like Billy, Elton, The Fray, and One Republic.

I also think he has shown that he is versatile. He has sang songs from Michael Jackson to Marvin Gaye, to Carrie Underwood and IMO has made them his own. Especially So Small by Carrie Underwood. What is the difference between let’s say Megan or Danny who don’t play an instrument and just sing to Matt sitting behind the piano and singing? How are they more versatile? IMO Megan and Danny are no more versatile than Matt and that actually Matt is the more versatile artist. So should Megan or Danny attempt to play an instrument when they can’t to be more versatile? Besides like Billy Joel playing the piano is all apart of his art and musicianship.

I like the piano, some of my favorite performances from last season involved playing an instrument and yes I agree that it does add to the artistry of the performance. But when a contestant plays the piano 4 weeks in a row (if Matt and Scott do this week)…. I am naturally gonna begin to get bored and want them to change it up a bit. I’m not asking him to completely give up the piano, just drop it for a performance once in a while.

LOL I think I’m the only person who liked Viva La Vida. His performance IMO was fine. I think the problem was he veered from what he is great at (according to the judges) R&B/Soul but IMO he took command of the stage fine. In the wildcard rounds he also took command of the stage and had an amazing vocal. This week he was praised for his stage performance. So I guess I’m just not seeing what you’re seeing. Well I think it’s because Matt is as good of a vocalist as he is a piano player whereas Scott’s vocals are thin and weak. They are looking for something in Scott that they will never fine. He is a great guy but is very limited as a vocalist. I also think that even though Matt is on the piano most of the time his song choices have differed greatly whereas Scott”s performance have pretty much all sounded the same. Jason had the same trouble as Scott. Jason was also limited as a vocalist (although IMO worlds better than Scott) and he never seemed to get out of his box so to speak. He had the same sound each week. I did like Jason though and enjoyed listening to him singing. But again I don’t agree that either used their instruments as a crutch. It is just part of who they are as artists. I don’t think an instrument can be a crutch.

Actually I don’t usually think that the idols use their instruments as a crutch because you actually have to learn more for the performance when you’re playing an instrument. For Scott, I do think it’s a crutch. Out of all his performances, I only like, surprise surprise, the one without the piano – “Mandolin Rain”.

When he focuses on singing and nothing else, he sends chills down my spine.

Of course you could attribute that to song choices as well but I always thought during Opry week, if he would just sit on the stool again and just sing Martina’s other song, “God’s Will”, it would have restored my faith in him.

Megan is actually my favorite this season. I know a lot of people don’t exactly like her different pronunciations and unique tone, but it just hits the right spot for me. I admit her performance last week was awful, but I honestly think she’s been awesome up until then (minus the ridiculous caw caw on rockin robin). Anyways, off of my Megan praise and on to song selections..

Megan: Pokerface by Lady Gaga (ACOUSTIC VERSION). This fits right up Megan’s alley and was the first song that immediately came to mind when I heard of the theme. I know you hear Lady Gaga and immediately think “techno pop crap, can’t actually sing,” but if you haven’t heard this version, go youtube it now. It’d be perfect for Megan in my opinion. Lily Allen’s cover of Womanizer or Lily Allen’s Smile would also fit Megan.

Allison: Like others have said, So What by Pink. Especially with last week, she’s shown America her vocal ability. Now we need to see her commercial, youthful side. I think If I Were A Boy by Beyonce would also fit well for Allison. I think she could also shine with a Kelly Clarkson song.

Lil: No One by Alicia Keys (bitter moment because Felicia was amazing with this song and didn’t make it into the top 36). She needs to take a slower song this week and really blow the audience away otherwise she can be in trouble. She’s been losing a lot of momentum since her Top 36 performance. I don’t know if Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful is on this list, but that could also be a shining moment for Lil. Fantasia’s Believe would also be great. Last song would be one of Leona Lewis’ songs.

Kris: He needs personality. We’ve established his looks and vocals, so he needs to have some fun this week. Gnarl’s Barkley Crazy ACOUSTIC version would be amazing. Jason Castro did this one (you can find a youtube video).
Weezer’s Beverly Hills with some more vocal range would be great on Kris.

Adam: What Goes Around by Justin Timberlake or Apologize. Any song by Muse would be amazing too. I was also thinking of Hallelujah, but I think Adam needs to show that he can be a current recording artist and not just a theatrical performer. I’m not docking his vocal ability, I just think he needs to stick with something current.

Scott: You’re Beautiful by James Blunt. Scott needs to pick a softer song to match his soft voice. Picking a big song or a song with high range will murder Scott because his voice just wouldn’t fit the song.

Matt: You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban. His Bottom 2 appearance shows that America isn’t really buying into him yet. If he did this song and nailed it, it could potentially be his huge shining moment of the competition. It’s an enormous song, but I think Matt is capable. Or, (to go out on a limb) he could do SexyBack by Justin. This could 1) bring him some female voters, 2) show his relevance 3) let him have some fun. I like The Fray for Matt, I just think it’s too predictable. I also think he needs to get off the piano.

Anoop: So Sick by Ne-Yo or any Ne-Yo song for that matter. Anoop needs a song with some pace to it. His ballads are great, but a ballad for a 3rd week in a row could get a little boring. Ne-Yo’s songs usually have some momentum to them while still allowing room for some vocal abilities.

Danny: Nickelback, Hey There Delilah, or Lips of An Angel.

Oh he still is all over stage I saw him both in Cleveland and Michigan the last time he was here but he is the piano man and is mostly at his piano. What I meant was no one would complain if Billy or Elton stayed at their pianoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s.

I’ve seen Billy Joel live so many times I’ve lost count. (Huge Billy fantard). I will say that the first time I saw him was around 87 and the last time, with Elton, just a couple of weeks ago. He is fabulous live, and a thoroughly engaging performer whether standing or seated at his piano. He may no longer be able to do back flips off of the piano, but he still puts on a great show.

I would like to lodge a complaint though about Elton’s super long, self indulgent piano solo that bored me to tears. But, that’s neither here nor there.

I am not a fan of Matt or Scott, but it doesn’t really bother me that they like to perform with their pianos. And, it’s a little unfair to compare some reality tv contestants to international superstars like Billy Joel and Elton John.

With all the lists and speculation I’ve seen, who even knows what songs will be cleared for them to choose from. Justin Timberlake won’t clear his songs for AI. Would Ne-Yo? I don’t know.

I’ve not got a clue for some of them.

Anoop: I’d love to see him do Because of You (Ne-Yo) or even take Maroon 5′s Makes Me Wonder and slap a nice groove on it and mix up the vocals. With the right song, he’ll kill this week. I hope he does.

I think Anoop is kinda in a bind this week. The judges want him to head back into My Prerogative/Beat It (which I thought was pretty good BTW) territory. These are the same people who advised Alexis to “dirty up”.

I think Anoop needs to find a strong mid-tempo song that keeps showing off his incredible voice. He can’t satisfy the judges because they will hammer him home (and I hope Anoop is smart enough to see that), but he has got to get out of the ballad box. My thought is Anoop is polling higher than they want so pretty much he will get slammed by the judges no matter what he sings. He really just needs to sing for his fans so he can get a deal when he is voted off. TPTB will NOT let him make final two — unfortunately, Anoop is not a chosen one.

I love Ne-Yo, but to be honest I think Anoop has a better voice, it’s richer in tone. However, Ne-Yo gets points for being the better dancer.

Although it may be a predictable choice, he could do more with the vocals than Ne-Yo does. And really? If I’m honest with myself I don’t see TPTB giving him frontrunner status even if he manages to bring the house down three weeks in a row. I do think that if he sang Ne-Yo or something really in his wheelhouse (dude’s got a sweet, sweet R&B voice), he’d get lots more casual fans on board and would have the support to go deep.

Re: Matt and the piano….the problem isn’t that he plays the piano. The problem is that at least so far, he lacks the superstar charisma at the piano, or when he gets up from the piano. Maybe he’s better live, but so far it isn’t coming through on televison. Zee camera, eet does not love heem. Elton John can sit at the piano and still be larger than life. Matt hasn’t pulled that off yet. Visual aide time….

It’s really hard to predict for this week since we have no idea what might clear. Hopefully, since they’re finally doing a current theme, they were willing to shell out some serious money. Actually, I remember earlier in the year, Jasmine said she couldn’t get Rihanna cleared – I wonder if they were “saving” the songs for Top 9?

Anyway, my guesses:

Adam: I have no idea. I’d like to hear him sing “Stop and Stare” but I think he’ll go back to up-tempo. He’ll be great regardless.

Danny: Ugh, imagining Danny sing any current song makes me realize how completely how not current he is. Maybe he could do “Waiting on the World to Change” or “Love Remains the Same.”

Lil: She won’t be able to resist Beyonce. We’ll get a shouty, karaoke “Irreplaceable,” “Halo”or “If I Were a Boy”

Megan: I’m afraid she’ll sing “Mercy.” Maybe she could try “I’m Like a Bird.” Caw!

Allison: “Big Girls Don’t Cry” or “Thinking of You.” I think she should avoid Kelly, and I don’t think Pink clears her songs

Matt: I think he’ll be behind the piano since the judges told him he should have stayed behind it last week. I think “How to Save a Life” seems like a good choice, since most of the song is just mumbling anyway, Matt could probably improve it. I really hope he doesn’t try to sing Apologize.

Kris: He will sing a strummy acoustic version of a girl song. I wouldn’t mind him singing “Tattoo,” actually

Scott: I can honestly see him picking “Bad Day,” “The Climb,” or “Time of My Life”

Anoop: “Because of You” or “Miss Independent” (the Ne-yo songs, not the Kelly songs). If he wants to be less obvious, I think he could sing “Leavin” or “How Do You Sleep” (Jesse McCartney is one of my fave guilty pleasures)

Those who enjoy playing an instrument as part of their artistic expression should do so. It’s up to them. The judges give advice but that’s all it is, just advice. Ultimately it’s up to the singer each week to decide how they want to interpret a song. I enjoy watching performances both with and without instruments, and don’t feel that I know what anyone should do. It depends on the song and what they feel inside. They should do what feels right to them, and then let the voters decide the results. The one thing they should not do is try to please the judges or the voters either. They should express what is inside themselves. That is artistry as opposed to artifice.

I think Lil will sing “Halo” by Beyonce.

Anoop will probably sing a Ne-yo song. Yay.

This will be an interesting and great theme week. Something current. Does anyone else think that TPTB will use this to decide who to pimp for the final. Lets face facts, 2 of the 3 initial favorites are having issues, Lil has not caught on and is in the actual bottom of many popularity pools and Danny is either stagnating or losing fans. They then starting looking to Matt, who ends up in the bottom 3. This week they can compare how the Idols downloads compare to the orginals and use that to gauge how marketablity of each of them.

Can’t wait to see what Adam and Allison does. Can’t wait to see if Matt can pull it. And heck I really can’t wait to see what Megan does as I never know what to expect from her.

Ne-Yo didn’t write “So Sick” or “Closer” so it was not his “perogative” to clear those songs for American Idol. The writers of the songs own the copyright so they get to do the clearing. Both those songs happen to be written by what looks to be a group of Swedes (BEITE MAGNUS TORKEHAGEN, ERIKSEN MIKKEL STORLEER, HERMANSEN TOR ERIK, SMITH SHAFFER with one other writer for each song: PORCARO STEVEN M and STRAY BERNT RUNE – seriously, what is it with Swedes and pop songs. Major exports from Sweden: Volvos, herring, cell phones, non-assembled furniture and pop songs?).

If the AI lawyers are doing their jobs, once a song has been cleared by the writers, it should be cleared forever. So “So Sick” or “Closer” should be fair game (though I don’t think anybody should try to re-do a group number in the same season). That said, there have been a few “suspicious” cases were the producers have suddenly not been able to clear songs that have already been sung on the show (not suprisingly, this never seems to happen to one of the pimpees). Ne-You seems to have most of his songs written by Mikel, Tor and Shaffer and the seem to be a group of hitmakers (writing big hits for Rihanna (Take a Bow, I Can’t stop the Music), Beyonce (Irreplaceable), Jennifer Hudson (Spotlight), Jordin Sparks (Tattoo), Elliott Yamin (Wait for You), etc), I think they will clear anything AI wants.

So, if a song has been sung on the show, it is a very good indication it can be sung again (not a guarantee). If a writer (or group of writers) have cleared songs, it’s a good indication they may clear other songs (but sometimes, that takes time and there is not enough time especially if the producers wish you would go away). If a singer’s song has been cleared on AI and they are not songwriters, you need to do some background checking to see if it is likely to get cleared.

IMO Megan and Danny are no more versatile than Matt and that actually Matt is the more versatile artist.

What do you mean? Danny does a mean airhump and can dance with the back-up singers and Megan can incorporate animal sounds into her songs…..isn’t that unbeatable, lol?

I did not know that. You learn something new on this blog every day. But, my point still stands. As the “Crazy” incident shows, you must get the writers, all the writers, to agree to release a song. As Ne-Yo doesn’t write the songs all by himself, we can’t use him singing a song as a guaranteed litmus test that the song will be released for Idol.

But, since he and Stargate seem to write 50% of the hit songs these days, only people wanting to sing songs by Pink or Danger Mouse should have a problem this week.

I seem to recall it’s even the venue that is responsible for the legalities (they pay a standard license fee and there is some formula for paying the writers (each individual song is not cleared). If you’ve planned a wedding with a band/DJ, you may have been introduced to that type of charge).

American Idol is a TV show and must get clearance for each individual song (or be sued). Because they also sometimes sell DVD and re-air episodes, they want to get those rights cleared as well (if you’ve ever purchased a DVD for a TV show and noticed that the songs have been changed, it’s because the lawyers didn’t get the right clearance and it was too expensive to re-license the song). Plus, they want to go on to sell the songs on iTunes. So, way different then singing the song for a small local audience.

I can’t believe it, but I’m getting so excited for tomorrow night’s show. Can’t wait to see what all of them do with current music.

I’m expecting Matt, Adam, Allison, Kris, and Anoop all to be good.

The original claim was that Ne-Yo clears his songs. I just wanted to point out that Ne-Yo doesn’t get the final say (it turns out he does co-write his songs, but every writer gets a say so he doesn’t get the final say. Some of his songs I checked have up to 5 writers). I was wrong about him writing his songs (I didn’t know he wrote his songs under his original names), but he doesn’t write them alone. My point is that you have to research the writers before assuming a song will be cleared. For instance, it’s not necessarily fishy if lots of Elton John songs have been sung on the show, but suddenly something doesn’t clear. It may just be that he wrote that song with somebody who wouldn’t clear the song.

That said, songs that have been previously cleared on Idol do not necessarily stay cleared (there have been a few odd cases where contestants said they wanted to sing a certain song and they were told it didn’t clear. The songs had previously been sung on Idol. So either somebody was lying/confused (contestant or producers) or the lawyers did something wonky). This happens quite rarely and a song being previously sung is the strongest indication that it can be sung again.

I forgot to mention that I’m most curious about what Alison will do. I’m guessing she’ll do some kind of young female pop rock song, But I would actually love if she showed a little more imagination tomorrow. It would be a good night for her to pull off a surprise.

Yes the venues do pay the licensing fee for ASCAP, BMI and SESAC the 3 major PRO’s ( Performing RIghts Organzations) Also, just to clarify, if you rent a venue for a wedding reception you DO NOT have to pay for a License for the band and/or DJ. This is an exempt event. Weddings/receptions are considered private/personal events. FOr example, a banquet hall is typically not licensed unless they have events ( ie: a band/DJ) and open the facility to the public where they are responsible for the advertising and promotion of the event. Renting a facility for a private event does not result in the banquet center having to carry a PRO license.

It could be. The theme hasn’t formally been announced by the show. Paula says it’s the Number 1 downloaded songs, but she has made a few mistakes in her life (Jasongate, for instance). Even if that is the theme, maybe getting to number one on a genre chart will count (that opens things up a lot).

Plus, Idol tends to play loosey-goosey with the themes (for instance, last year, they had theme decades and let people sing songs outside of the decade. I vaguely remember Fantasia singing some 80s song during Disco week (it was not a disco song). Etc). So, they may say iTunes number 1 songs and then have lots of other songs being valid.

Who knows what that list is exactly. It’s billed as the Top 100 songs. “Dancing Queen” by ABBA? “American Pie” by Don McLean? When were they last on the Top 100 charts? There are a lot of songs on there that haven’t been on for a while, so that list is not the Top 100 songs this week (if any week). You couldn’t expect them to have the top 100 songs this week, though, because they had to pick the songs at least last week. It can’t be the Top 100 songs of all time because it doesn’t have “Low” by Flo Rida (biggest download of all time). So, the list looks a little suspicious, but it’s Idol so it could be correct.

BTW I tend to think Paula’s right on the theme though because it’s more open than Top 100 iTunes (IMO). Her version of the theme gives several years of hits to pick from. But Idol doesn’t always worry about themes being open enough for the contestants (if the chosen ones can work within the theme, no reason to stretch it).

The main difference is if the performance is in public. If it is for the public, a license is needed. I would imagine the university has licenses from all three PROs, so they wouldn’t have encountered any problems there.

The fact that something is covered on a CD is no indication of whether or not the songwriters will clear it for television (or anything else). Once a song is released, any one can secure a mechanical (also known as a compulsory) license to cover the song. The songwriters/artists/etc cannot stop them (thus the “compulsory”). As long as you pay your 9.1 cents per copy pressed (in terms of CDs, vinyl, etc) or sold (digital downloads), you can record whatever released song your heart desires.

Anyway, two of the four songs were changed, but two went on as planned. I talked to my friend for the first time since then on Friday. This friend gave me some more spoilers. Keep in mind this was on Friday and things could change like last time. I only got three this week.

If the spoilers are right, Adam picked well. Matt? Ugh. In order to sing “Apologize” well, you have to hit the falsetto parts ON KEY every single time, which I don’t think Matt can do. But who knows? Maybe he’ll prove me wrong.

We know he can do it but, I dunno, I’ve already heard him do Crazy a few dozen times (*blush*), so I was really hoping for something new from Adam. I’m sure I’ll love it, regardless though.

MrRJ- LOL You do not want to fuck with PRO’s. With the black and white nature of the Federal Copyright law behind them, they very very rarely ever lose in court. And they can make your life miserable, but if you use someone elses property you have to have permission.

Kirsten- Typically university’s have a blanket license that covers all music uses on a campus. So Anoops group concerts on campus were more than likey covered ( thanks Fender) But if his group went off campus to another venue ( ie: a club, bar, concert hall) then the venue would be required to license. Once a PRO license is obtained, the entire catalog of that PRO is covered. Not familiar with out of county PRO’s and their policies, but there are receprical agreements in place with foreign PRO’s. FOr example, an American PRO collects lic fees for other countries ( the list to so long so I won’t name them, but other than a couple middle eastern countries most are covered)

No real gray area. If an event is for profit( an open to the public, advertised and promoted event) they need a lic. Festivals, in the park concert series( typically the city would hve a blanket lic in place) and your typical bar, restaurant , hotel…etc….all need licenses. Charity or not for profit events typically don’t need a lic. These are also exempt events.

This whole “Top 100″ deal came from peeps jumping to conclusions.

When Top Idol first spoiled the theme, she called it “Itunes”–nothing about Top 100. Then VFTW called it Top 100–kinda jumping the gun. That’s when peeps started posting all over the place that the theme was “Top 100″

My source (who asked the Idol peeps herself) called it “Top Downloads” NOTHING about Top 100. And then Paula called it “#1 Downloads”.

So, I’m sticking with the sources in a position to know the deal.

ETA: It looks like that blogger is just repeating the “Top 100″ rumor and grabbed a bunch of songs off iTunes. It doesn’t read like he’s got inside information.

I know the things Idol producers do should never really suprise me, but having a “theme” week basically kept secret is not a PR bonanza. In the real non-Idol world, anouncing a solid theme builds buzz and increases excitement and VIERWERSHIP!

Hm, I don’t know if I would do Apologize or Crush, which are two Archie songs. I thought Archie was fabulous in the finale and he also sang it on the AI tour. Crush is too new, or top of mind. Just draws more parallels from a voice PoV, IMO.

Matt Giraud has a lovely recorded voice, from that snippet. I caught his performance of So Small. That was nice. He, Allison, and Anoop are the most interesting. The others are just too OTT or just forgettably bad, IMO.

I actually didn’t think much at all of Lady GaGa (the name, peeps) until I heard her acoustic version of that song. I find her muy interesting now. Yep, I’m an oldie (but a goodie, damnit). I don’t actually know many of the songs on that list. I haven’t listened to a top 40 station in more than as many years…I’m actually not about to start now. I actually don’t even listen to the radio anymore and haven’t in about half as many years unless I’m supporting David Cook. Thank God HAC seems to love him because even for David, I don’t think I could ever listen to CHR. So this week will be interesting to me for their choices. I’m not expecting to know many of the songs they choose.

I think Crush is a bad song choice (not that it wouldn’t be fun seeing somebody do it). I love the song–it’s catchy and fun–but the verses don’t show enough range and the chorus has too much range (the high note is kind of killer because you can’t scoop up to it–it took a few tries before DA started singing it on point every time). The only contestant I could see doing well with it is Allison because (1) she’s a girl, hence she won’t draw as many comparisons, (2) it’s more age-appropriate for her, and (3) she’ll naturally rockify it because of her vocals.

I really think these contestants should pick songs outside their genre, or outside their gender. Matt should tackle a heavier rhythmic R&B song and make it his own. I think he should stay far away from OneRepublic or The Fray, which, although aren’t really his genre, are just so obvious. Adam should go more R&B than alternative (or even dance–no Lady Gaga, please). Allison should stay away from Pink and Kelly Clarkson, and should do either straight pop (originally by a guy) or R&B (maybe something by Beyonce). Kris shouldn’t sing Jason Mraz–maybe he should do “Bleeding Love” and make it acoustic-y. Anoop should pick a rockish song and make it soulful–he should bring up the tempo this week though.

I’ll have to think about the rest.

Apologize is exactly the song I would have picked for Matt, so I hope that particular spoiler is true. I think ‘Apologize’ would give him the chance to showcase his falsetto in a way that doesn’t sound out of place or distract from the song (which, arguably, has been the case in past performances).

How could “Crazy” jump on the charts when Jason sang it when they never aired Jason singing “Crazy”? If you mean what happened with “Hallelujah,” that happens to a varying degree with a lot of songs sung on Idol–regardless of who is singing them. I think “Hallelujah” went to #1 on iTunes primarily because a lot of people didn’t own the Buckley version (or any version, for that matter). That wasn’t the case for the more recognizable songs sung on Idol.

I think Danger Mouse knows by now the effect Idol has on song sales. He would have known by the end of last season when DA was trying to clear “Crazy” for the finale, but couldn’t.

I’m an Archie fan and an Adam fan. Even if someone else sang Crazy it wouldn’t matter to me because the contestants don’t have permanent ownership of a song they have sung on idol, unless they wrote it themselves.

I don’t know really what I want Adam to sing this week. I think he shouldn’t play it safe though. I mean I don’t want him to be OTT, but he can’t dial it all the way down. Truthfully for me it’s not about song choice for him because he has real good instincts. It’s more now about working the camera better. Although it’s not a factor for me, many say they feel he doesn’t connect with the audience, so that will be the next step for him. Making that connection.

I agree with soundscene – The Fray and One Republic are too obvious for Matt. I think Allison would have too much pressure put on her if she did a Kelly Clarkson or P!nk song – b/c that’s exactly the type of song they’ll make her do on tour I bet. I think this “Top Downloads” theme is Adam and Danny’s to lose. They’ve both been told they are current and relatable – if they can’t pull off a recent hit, what kind of album would they make?? Sorry, channeling Kara right there… lol. So, my picks – I haven’t seen any spoilers so I don’t know what could be cleared and what doesn’t have a chance of appearing on Idol…

Adam – Weezer’s “Beverly Hills,” like a really dark version with some kind of sick drum arrangement. Could be the highlight of the season, whatever song he ends up with.
Allison – She could rock out Madonna “Hung Up”, I want her to do well – stay away from P!nk, there’s no room to catch your breath in those songs.
Kris – JT “My Love” or Hinder “Lips of an Angel” – he may be too innocent to pick a cheating song, but they could really twist up the arrangement and pick good verses. You can get a lot of content with just 85 seconds of that song!
Danny – “Photograph” by Nickelback or Makes Me Wonder Maroon 5… I really wish AAR’s “Move Along” made this list, guess it never reached #1.
Anoop – Ne-Yo or Chris Brown

If Scotty Mac wants to go All In and out with a bang, BAD DAY would be perfect. It would be such a ballsy move. And I actually think the song could work well for him.

Megan should do Katy Perry. I was listening to her new song, Thinking of You, a couple days ago, thinking, man this girl sings putrid, even Megan on American Idol does better than this. So it follows that Megan should sing it just to prove my point.

I just listened to Adam’s version of Crazy on Utube and I’m trying to understand all the Adam love? Sadly, I just don’t get it. Everything he sings sounds like it should be on a Broadway stage. How is he current or commercial? I just cannot see him as a recording artist. His voice is so unpleasant to my ears. So loud, over the top, and screechy. As lakerchristinee said, “Disturbia” was already aired this season when Nate Marshall sang it in Hollywood, so it’s been cleared. Also, “Don’t Stop the Music” was cleared for the group song on Idol Gives Back last year. So it’s likely still cleared. So, Rihanna songs HAVE been done before.

So maybe the song Jasmine wanted to sing was written by different people and they wouldn’t clear it. As we discussed earlier in this thread, all writers have to clear a song for it to be cleared to be sung, so if whatever she wanted to do was written by others who didn’t want their song done on AI, there isn’t much TPTB can do about that.

I would love love love it if Matt did a Kanye song off 808s & Hearbreak, like Heartless or Love Lockdown. They’re not traditional rap songs, I think he could do something really cool with Love Lockdown in particular with just the piano and some percussion.

Someone mentioned Chasing Pavements for Megan, I think she could make that fit into her range, but if she does it she better not massacre it, I love that song!

I think that’s a stretch. I think “old anoop” means a non-ballad, ala “My Prerogative.” And if the spoilers are fake, that’s a no-brainer since the judges told him to bring the fun back. If the spoiler chick is legit and really has a friend on Idol, she may not even know about Anoop’s Clef Hanger days unless Anoop is the friend.

I’d be willing to bet that Kris will get it this week. He went 2nd last week and it’s just screaming his name. Anoop technically got the last spot during wildcard, but that doesn’t really count seeing as it was a non-voting show, so if he performs first this week, he’ll snatch it up for Top 8.

Hm, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if I would do Apologize or Crush, which are two Archie songs. I thought Archie was fabulous in the finale and he also sang it on the AI tour. Crush is too new, or top of mind. Just draws more parallels from a voice PoV, IMO.

I actually think either Alison or Kris could do something interesting with “Crush.” Alison can do a girl power-pop arrangement like Avril Lavigne and rock it out. Kris can do an acoustic cover. Either would be a good strategic choice, as young girls should be an important part of the fanbase for both of these contestants.

It will be interesting to see if Anoop does kiss, kiss. The clef hangars you tube videos have huge numbers of hits, it’s upbeat and fun but the whole Chris Brown thing could detract. Don’t think he’d have to worry too much about middle America not liking it as Adam isn’t catering to them. Of course, Adam does have the judges backing him.

I really think these contestants should pick songs outside their genre, or outside their gender.

I stopped at the end of the tour. In fact, most of the time I was watching it muted, LOL! I just watched it for all the shennanigans of Michael Johns & the whole MAVID thing was hilarious!!!

I hope Matt chooses a completely unexpected pop/rock song (better yet one sung by a female) and turns it into his own, playing INTENSE mad piano and pouring his soulful vocals on it. I think he’s entertaining with or without the piano. He’s clearly the best pianist among those who’ve played the instrument on the show, and can therefore get away with using it week in, week out.

I agree. I always assumed they previewed the performances and picked based on a combination of pimping and quality.

I’m not sure that they ALWAYS choose who goes last that way…Last year my favorite was David Archuleta, and he sang last during Top 12 week (We Can Work It Out)…and we all know what happened there. I heard his dress rehearsal wasn’t great either, so I can’t imagine that they thought he was the best that night.

I think sometimes the pimp spot theories are a little overthought. I think they tend to put the most popular people towards the end of the show so viewers don’t tune out early. Ratings and all that.

I would imagine, it’s probably a little bit of all of the above. When producing a show like this, you’d probably want to start strong and end big. But, also to sprinkle a lot of good between the bad to keep everyone tuned in.

I know we speak a lot of death spots, and pimp spots, and I know the results often bear out on those theories. But, from a production standpoint, I’m not sure they have too many hard and fast rules. Their first objective is a compelling tv show.

I took a closer look at last season’s placement and yes, it doesn’t have to be fair. It’s Idol afterall.

Archie already got his 2nd pimp spot during Final 12? If we do disregard the “semifinals”, then Syesha should have gotten it during Top 6, when the other 5 have received theirs. Instead Cook got his 2nd.

I think that is also the point when the inevitable is becoming clearer, it’s gonna be David vs David.

So yeah, I’ll put Anoop, Lil, Adam and Danny back in contention for last spot.

I think that some of them are different. I saw one on “Idol Chat” and I think she mentioned that she has been with Idol for five years. But I think they got rid of some of the others ones, that were around last year.

Ok, based on the list Kirsten provided and others I hope could be included this is what I think would be great for tonight:

Allison (who I think will sing first): “Who Knew”- Pink (can show range in her voice and still rock out)
Anoop: “Miss Independent”- Ne-Yo (nice energy but not too much to throw off his singing)
Matt: “Burn”- Usher (I think if he stuck behind the piano on this song it could work really well with his falsetto and soul vibe) or “Apologize”- One Republic, can’t make up my mind!
Lil’: “If I were a Boy”- Beyonce (I think she needs to slow it down a little and just have a simple song and I definitely think she could do this song justice)

The tour band is different than the house band. House band is also quite a lot bigger. There was an interesting interview Gray Charles did with the guy that leads the tour band (and there have been several interview with Rickey who leads the house band).

In any event, they are professionals. They won’t have any trouble learning whatever arrangement for whatever song the Idols want to sing. Unless the producers would rather they did not….dunh.da.dunh.
