The American Idol 14 Finale Downsizes Venue

American Idol will downgrade this season’s finale by returning to the 3,332 Dolby Theater (previously the Kodak Theater).  The finale was held at that Los Angeles theater every season, except season 2, which was held at the now-defunct Gibson amphitheatre, until the show switched to the 7,100 seat Nokia theater in 2008 for season 7.

Billboard Magazine asked executive producer Per Blankens Wednesday night why production decided to make the switch. “It’s iconic and we’ve been there before,” he said referring to taping Hollywood Week there last year.

Or, maybe it has to do with the overall budget cutting that has included slashing the results show, scaling back the number of episodes, and cutting the American Idol Live tour cast from 10 to 5 finalists.

During Idol’s Wednesday broadcast, mentor, Scott Borchetta, took each of the Top 6 on a tour of the empty theater to give them a taste of what awaits if they make it to the final.

The American Idol finale is only 3 weeks away, airing in two parts on Tuesday May 12 and Wednesday May 13.
