League of Extraordinary Dancers Perform at the 82nd Academy Awards

I’ll be watching Oscars tonight, will you? Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin will host, and thanks to Academy Awards producer (and SYTYCD judge) Adam Shankman, there will be a slew of So You Think You Can Dance alums performing.

For the first time, the Academy opened up it’s slate of Best Picture nominees to 10 entries. You can check out all of the nominees right HERE.

I won’t be live-blogging, exactly, but here is a thread for those folks who want to comment.

  • Also, just for fun, I’ve started a Fun Office Pool for the Oscars. If you’re interested, you can sign up HERE.  I’ll announce the winners after the broadcast.

See you later! The broadcast begins at 8:30/5:30pt on ABC

Jakob Karr from SYTYCD last season is definitely in the show – he has been twitting about rehearsals.

  • TwigLA

I’ll be watching, though I’m not so sure of Steve Martin and ALec Baldwin hosting. They both seem to grate on me these days. I haven’t seen any of the movies, but I’m usually good at picking the winners based on buzz and trailers. I often think that’s how the voting academy picks them too.

  • cheese

I will probably tune in to look at Colin Firth.

  • JudyL

Probably just peek in during Amazing Race, and maybe after that I’ll watch since there isn’t much competition on the other stations.

Haven’t seen any of the movies. This is the first year I have not seen at least one, sometimes several. I blame this on dvd’s and my laziness. There is such a short wait until the movies are out on dvd.

Since I love Jeff Bridges, I want him to win. Since I hate James Cameron, I don’t want him to win.

  • IdolThoughts

Yeah-I’m getting the same thing as Bobbi when I click the link^^

    Me three

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

    Me four.

I’ll be watching too. I’ve only seen Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds and The Blindside. Thinking Avatar will probably win despite my white hot hate for James Cameron.

  • hoosiermama

I’ll be watching to see the Best Actor award go to (Jeff Bridges) since I got to see the actual Oscar on Thursday, in downtown Chicago. Kodak had it on display. Totally lucked out seeing it, as it was leaving for Hollywood on Friday. I also got to touch an unused one and have my pic taken with it. They’re very smooth and shiny!! Was very cool.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

OK, I figured it out. Click on the link and when you see the error message, click on Home. Click the link to join the Oscar pool. Scroll the top menu to select the Oscars pool. In the pool name, type “Oscar” (no “s”) and your log in name. Voila.

Just entered all my picks. Those categories like “animated short” will kill me.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

The link should be working now..

  • Little Boy Blue

I’d like to watch it. Unfortunately, I live in Long Island and my cable provider is CABLEVISION, which has a dispute with ABC and its parent company DISNEY.

As a result, we have an ABC blackout for over 3 million CABLE VISION subscribers in my area.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

LBB, we’re not on Cablevision and yet, we got that message for two hours this morning. Our cable provider had some sort of selective problem that just affected Channel 7. Very weird. I’m really sorry you’re having such issues with this!

ETA: Chose one of the majors I’m pretty sure will lose just because I want her to win. But, all those lesser categoris will surely doom me! At least this will keep track of my guesses. :)

  • Miss Chaos

Thanks for the pool, I love pools. Now I might have some reason to watch, since I didnt see any of the pictures other that Avatar, which I loved. Dont know much about a lot of the small films so I just did Enie Meenie Minie Mo. I saw Alice in Wonderland today, I was confused with the movie..and I felt like it was Johnny Deep being Capt Jack, being the Mad Hatter.

  • http://MJO judes

Thanks MJ for the pool. I’ve done mine – probably have them all wrong but it adds to the interest [ not that I can see this live as our Fox channels don't include E & Movie Extra-] I’ll have to look at the updates on her to see how I went!!

  • luval

Just played FYE (almost the whole song) for the beginning of the Red Carpet on the E network!!

  • girlygirl

E! just used FYE as the background music over the open for their red carpet coverage

  • luval

Adam Shankman said recently the opening number will be the most fabulous in oscar history! We’ll see.

girlygirly….great minds hear and see the same thing!!

  • TopCatDC

NYC Cablevision subscribers – don’t forget for about $20 you can run over to your nearest Radio Shack or Best Buy and get an antenna and pick up ABC over the air. (Usually in better HD quality than over cable.)

Looking forward to the show – I think this will a year when the Academy will “spread the wealth” around to multiple films. Rooting for Meryl Streep. 16 nominations since 1982 and no wins! This is a travesty!

  • girlygirl

Ryan is talking to Mo’Nique…I was reading today that she wants to develop the story of Hattie McDaniel into a movie and play that role herself. Hope she can do that

  • luval

Some horrible purple thingy dress just walked in the background on the red carpet. couln’t tell if it was on Tyra Banks or Jada Pinkett Smith. Definitely will be on fashion police.
Oops…it’s Zoe Saldana, not the other gals.

  • songsungblue

Hah, luval! That was Zoe Saldana, and I thought the same thing. WTF? I did love Anna Kendrick’s dress – she’s not that special looking, but she’s adorable.

  • lorismile

I don’t like Monique. I don’t know… she just rubs me the wrong way.

  • songsungblue

Zoe Zaldana needs more than a new dress, she needs a sandwich. Or 12. And I say that as a woman weighing 115 pounds. Sheesh. She also needs to kind of shut it, in my opinion.

  • luval

songsungblue…ya beat me to my edit. As you just saw Ryan said NOTHING about the dress!
lorismile….feel the same way about Monique..Don’t know either..maybe it’s because she doesn’t shave her legs (ha ha) just kidding.

Oh, James Cameron’s wife looks a little bit bony in the shoulders.

So far I have not liked any dress.

that Farmiga actress is really forgetable. Too bad she’s probably a good actress.

  • girlygirl

E! is premiering the Lady Gaga/Beyonce music video — and it’s TEN minutes long? Yikes

I hope Jason Reiman won’t get mad that Vera Farmiga wants Kathyrn Bigelow to win Best Director

  • dhunken

ok I’m in. Lets just hope I have better luck at picking Oscar picks then I am having with this years Idol picks. :-)

  • girlygirl

Ryan Reynolds is a good looking guy, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie he’s been in

  • luval

I always thought Jason Reitman seemed full of himself. He ain’t gonna win a thing. Loved “Up”…not “Up in the Air”.

Oops, another ugly red dress…When Maggie Gyllenhall appears, I think I like her dress. Very Different. Well, I take that back. It doesn’t fit right.

Lots of women there need a sandwich and a little bit of makeup ..and a better hairdo and blah blah.

Here’s that red dress…yucks…Sigorney Weaver is a mess.

  • songsungblue

James Cameron’s wife looks like she’s been locked in a room and starved.

  • songsungblue

Totally, Luval. Maggie G. doesn’t stand up straight in her clothes.

  • songsungblue

A lot of drab, drab colors.

  • luval

Tina Fey looks ok but she really needs a stylist. The show’s been picked up for a 5th season? Never saw it.

  • songsungblue

I’m not sure that one armed thing is that flattering on her. I don’t understand why Tina Fey looks so bad all the time. She’s stunning.

But on the plus side, at least she weighs more than 25 pounds dripping wet.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I just bumped this thread up to the top of the blog…

  • http://MJO judes

These awards shows really show up the “skinny” actresses. Long dresses just don’t look right on a pole figure!! Give me some curves in a dress – that’s what really sets the dress off!!

  • luval

This Amanda chick, whoever she is, looks like a washed out fish. Armani? yikes.
Oh Faith hill…turn around and start over with that dress!!
Most of the guys look great. Even Quinten Tarantino
Edit is gonna get a workout tonight. Did you just see Miley Cyrus? Stand Up Straight, girl!!!

  • songsungblue

Amanda Seyfried should never ever speak. Never. Or choose a dress. Bad, bad dress.

  • songsungblue

Faith Hill looks like she got caught at a Goth convention and didn’t have time to change.

  • http://MJO judes

Ha – Sam Worthington[ Avatar] was interviewed by an Australian Network-[ as he's an Aussie] & for their clothes he & his partner have the same designer- her dress $45,000 worth with a blue Avatar theme- but Sam is keeping it real with $20 shoes from Payless as he says they are the most comfortable shoes!!

  • luval

    songsungblue you are a hoot!
Jay is wearing My Aunt Ethel’s wing chair cover.
Now I like Sam Worthington and his $20 shoes.

  • claudette

I’m so nervous b/c I want Sandra to win. She’s always so cute and down to earth.

Cameron’s wife looked sickly thin. Tim McCraw looks so different for some reason.

Ryan Reynolds is adorable – he was great in the romantic comedy The Proposal with Sandra Bullock for those who have never seen him in a movie.

  • songsungblue

Miley Cyrus scares me. If she’s 17, she’s 17 in dog years. And those tacky Mom Cyrus tattoos. *Shudder*

[Thanks, Luval. My husband is wonderful in every way, but fashion - is not his thing]

  • alxsavage

    This should be fun!

My picks are ready, last year I predicted most of the winners, this year I haven’t had time too see that many movies, so I might as well suck predicting tonight.

  • luval

George Clooney ran from the limo and is sporting a mini-mini-mullet. I do like longer hair on guys.
good lord in heaven. Charlize Theron has something on her boobs. Horrible horrible horrible. Yes, Jay you are correct. Guiliana..no.

  • songsungblue

I’m not sure but I think Sarah Jessica Parker is wearing bread loaves on her head.

(Hi Stanley Tucci! I went to school with him, and yes, he once had a giant head of hair.)

  • girlygirl

Ok that hairstyle was not a good idea for Sarah Jessica Parker

  • luval

Thanks songsungblue…now I’m hungry for a big chunk of Italian bread and butter. And I don’t eat after 7pm est.

  • songsungblue

I think I could look better than most of them with a quick stroll through J Crew and a hairbrush.

  • songsungblue

Have you seen the giant cinnamon rolls strapped on Charlize Theron’s chest? ;)

  • luval

I think Stanley Tucci is kinda cute just like Tony in the Soprano’s.Yes, I think I could do better than all these women (yeah, right ha ha!).
Yum, clooney again. He is hot.
Oh, Adam Shankman coming up. Maybe he’ll give us a hint on the opening. Would like to see the SYTYCD kids.

  • luval

    Clooney was stoned.
JLo has something spewing out of her hip.

  • songsungblue

I think Rachel McAdams and Meryl Streep looks the best so far. Love the shot of Jennifer Lopez adjusting her bodice. Heh. She looks like a crazy prom queen.

  • girlygirl

Oh Keanu is still absolutely gorgeous.

  • dhunken

My guess to Ryan’s hint is Neil Patrick Harris will do a musical number to start the show. MJ do I get any additional points if I am right? ;-) I have a feeling I will need all the points I can get. Anyway that is my guess to Ryan’s hint.

  • claudette

Rachael McAdams is my favorite dress. When did Matt Damon become so boring?

  • ealbino

I’m sooooooo mad.. I have cablevision and I can’t watch the oscars because they took abc off my cable. Does anyone know where I could watch it on the internet? I could always check here if you all are watching and maybe I could get a play by play? LOL

  • luval

Was Rachael McAdams dress the turquoise/burgandy/greyish dress? If so, it’s my favorite too.

  • songsungblue

That was it. And it was my favorite too. :)

There’s a live feed somewhere ealbino. I would just google Oscar Live Feed -

  • ealbino

Thanks sonsungblue.. Let me go see if I could find it.

  • dhunken

I was right!!!!! I was right!!!!! Neil Patrick Harris opening the show….yeah for me!!!!! I should get points MJ… J/K

  • http://bridgetcarle.wordpress.com vorona
  • luval

Hey NPH Has Adam’s jacket on! I love NPH. Opening number is kinda old hollywood. cool.

  • http://MJO judes

“When did Matt Damon become so boring?”

Maybe its the interviewer who’s the problem- on the Aussie channel he was interviewed & he was his normal laid back self. He has his oldest child there with his Mum as well- so maybe he’s just proud for them to be there as its 12 years since he was nominated!!

  • http://MJO judes

I’ve just realised we do have this on a free to air channel live but boo I have to go out – so I’ll see how many votes I got wrong later!!

  • luval

So far I’m laughing at Baldwin and Martin.

  • TopCatDC

Oh boy, that Steve Martin / Alex Baldwin opening just DIED. And the song by Niel Patrick Harris was not good either.

  • offside

Neil Patrick Harris should be a national treasure.

  • kk613

Clooney about to turn the Oscars into the Source Awards ina sec. Keep playing games.

  • ealbino

Yay! cablevsion just gave me ABC again. Details of their war to be worked out later. Damn but I missed the dancing.

  • offside

I didn’t catch who it was who introduced The Blind Side in best picture category, but he looked oddly like Rod Serling introducing a Twilght Zone episode.

  • sailormoon

I agree that Rachel McAdams looked lovely and the most beautiful so far.

Christoph Waltz’s acceptance speech was probably the best I’ve heard in a long time.

  • luval

I loved the movie Up. Glad it won.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

Loved Inglorious Basterds and Christopher Waltz was absolutely brilliant. So glad he won.

NPH was horrible. Steve and Alec kind of meh.

  • rayni

I love “The Weary Kind” – glad it won. I don’t even like Alex Baldwin and they’re making me laugh (I missed the opening tho).

  • luval

offside…that was Ben Stiller…yes he did have that Rod Serling vibe going on!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

3 for 3 so far in the pool! Woo hoo!

  • rayni

I love Robert Downey Jr. with a clear, lasting and pure passion. He and Tina Fey were hilarious.

  • Kirsten

Poor Randy Newman is forever losing in the song category. LOL. That’s probably why I knew to pick another song (helps when the category is reduced from 1 out of 5 to 1 out of 3).

  • TopCatDC

Tina Fey and Robert Downey, Jr.: Yes. Just, YES.

  • rayni

So Molly looks HUGE next to Matthew Broderick. Is he a little guy?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

Yak! Missed one. I picked Basterds for original screenplay but Hurt Locker won. Oh well.

  • sue

I heart John Hughes movies. Awwww…..so many memories of the 80′s classics.

  • sue

So Molly looks HUGE next to Matthew Broderick. Is he a little guy?

Yeah Matthew is a little guy. lol… Molly had some heels on too, she still looks beautiful to me.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

    Molly seemed so nervous.

  • gangreen29

damn these short films ruining my perfect pool so far

  • offside

Gosh, I wish there was a theatre near me that shows these animated short films. Where I grew up (San Jose, Ca) there was a theatre that used to have animation festivals and documentary short film festivals. I really dig the shorties!
*Thanks, luval, you would think I would recognize someone as famous as him!

  • TopCatDC

damn these short films ruining my perfect pool so far

Ditto. 4 correct / 3 wrong so far.

I am with you! Damn the Short films….. :-)

  • Miss Chaos

I think I am doing good in the pool, we got what, an hour and a half left, and I wasnt going to even watch, but pooling is fun (if thats a word)

  • TopCatDC

Didn’t get to see “An Education.” That clip that makes me want to see it.

  • offside

Sarah Jessica-Parker looks like the footless Little Cindy Lu from How The Grinch Stole Christmas in that dress!

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

James Cameron’s wife (Susi Amos?) looks like a cadaver. How can people think being that thin is attractive? Ugh!

  • TopCatDC

Where are the SYTYCD dancers? Bring them back!

  • offside

Boo, only three very short clips of horror films from the silent era!
Dozens of great horror films were made before sound was ever introduced, especially in the German Cinema between 1917-1927.

  • chicksineggz

… and why was Twilight in the Horror film montage?

  • http://www.lindafoltz.com linda2u

James Taylor is such a class act! Great song! Great performance!

  • miss_marisa

If Avatar wins best picture I will cut a bitch….

  • useless

    …the big guy’s from SYTYCD?

  • offside

    There you go, TopCatDC !

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Just tuned in… I haven’t seen most of the movies though.

  • funshine

Awesome dance routines!!! Definitely the highlight of the night. If that doesn’t widen SYTYCD’s audience, I don’t know what will! It’s such an awesome show…
Does anyone know which of the SYTYCD alumni were there?

  • claudette

What’s up with George Clooney? He’s bugging me tonight! Loved the dancing. This has to be the most bored audience I’ve seen at an awards show. ha.

  • http://www.gleerpg.com gleeRPG

I’m pretty sure the blond chick was Kayla! She was my favorite during that season of SYTYCD. I hadn’t been to MJs today, but after seeing who I’m pretty sure was Kayla, I came here to see if it actually was her or not. XD

  • girlygirl

Allison is at Elton John’s Oscar watch party — and she met Elton John himself!

I haven’t seen the hurt locker but I’m dissapointed,I think James Cameron should have won.I mean he’s been wiorking on this for 10 years and he’s just put so much passion into this movie and i jut think he really deserves it because he seems like the best director ever

But although I disagree, congratulations Kathryn

Congrats to Lionsgate for getting 20 out of 24….Amazing. I came in 17th. Not bad I had a winning record 13 right 11 wrong. Got all the biggies right. That was fun. I did much better here then I do with Idol. My total points won was 52. Thanks MJ.

Wooooo hoooooooooooooooooo Hurt Locker rules!!!! And for first time ever, a WOMAN Best Director!! And Katheryn is hot too!! Haha wonder if James is kicking himself..

On another note, Jeff and Sandra were well-deserved. I love Sandra!!

  • funshine

I love Sandra too! So happy she won (even though I didn’t even see The Blind Side). I agree that she just seems like a really genuine, down to earth, not stereotypically hollywood type of gal. I always thought her real life personality was probably closest to that of her character in Ms. Congeniality =). I also saw her interview with Barbara Walters today. Wow, what a class act. I’m so often disappointed when actors are interviewed and they just don’t seem as funny, articulate, or bright as their on-screen persona. Not the case with Sandra Bullock!

  • jtoms

sandra bullock’s lead actress win might be worse than reese witherspoon’s. the fact that she probably knows it makes a bit better. but her speech was wonderful, and by far the best of the night. so there’s that.

    yay for the hurt locker.

  • funshine

well, some would argue there is a long history of actors and actresses winning not based on their current performance, but their entire body of work. Without having seen any of the movies this year, I can’t say whether Sandra Bullock falls into that category. I’m just happy for her. And I agree, awesome speech. The right blend of self-deprecating humor with appreciation, and recognition for the other amazing women who had been nominated.

Well I got 3 of the big 4 right- best Actress & Actor & director- just got the movie wrong!! Glad Kathryn won for best Director- I so do not like James Cameron!! Sandra is my favourite actress so I’m so pleased for her as well!!
I was in the middle of the pack- I fell down with all the categories I had no idea about- took a stab but it didn’t work!!

I knew AVATAR wasn’t going to win. It just isn’t the kind of movie that wins these types of awards no matter how much it makes in the box office. The Academy doesn’t recognize CGI-type films, they recognize the meaty, intense kinds of movies.

After Oprah’s intro of Gabourey Sidibe I was secretly hoping for an upset of her winning over Sandra Bullock for BEST ACTRESS. I knew it was a long shot but it would have been such a great moment after the whole “Cinderella Story” thing and then winning on her first try. And it’s not like she wouldn’t have deserved it. She was sooo good as Precious. That movie made me cry buckets of tears…

JAMMASTA: Kris and Katy’s picture is unintentionally funny. They’re both looking different directions. Why does that entertain me?

Probably because for being together as long as they have, they don’t seem very in-sync with each other.

Something about her bothers me. I can’t quite decide whether Katy looks vapid or calculating. But something about her just unnerves me. Obviously, I don’t know her well enough to really judge, but I just think she comes across as too “cold” for someone like Kris who seems so laid-back and happy-go-lucky. Just my opinion.

Anyway, that’s neither here nor there… Kris looks great, I’m really loving his long-ish hair. He doesn’t look quite so young as he usually does. And how funny that Joe Zee is there with him and Allison. Too bad Adam is in Australia, that would have been funny.

It is strange that Keanu Reeves (who I love as eye candy) got to do Point Break, basically his first action movie, directed by Kathryn B. And Keanu got a job at Speed because somebody noticed him as an action movie star from Point Break. And Speed introduced Sandra Bullock and she became a big star after that.

    Connection, connection, connection .

Didn’t Kris say that he and Katy are two complete opposites.
Katy is type A, and he is basically, not.

And, IMO, when Katy married Kris, he was a nobody living in Arkansas. And because of him, one year later, she got to go to all these parties and see all these actors. She must be over the moon.

    Thanks MJ
for taking the time and trouble to set up a pool for the Academy Awards. THAT WAS FUN!! I tied for 3rd place, my excitement for the week!! (Well, besides Lambo Mardi Gras video, HA!)
I don’t work due to disability, so being an Idol fan, (pretty much a tv-holic) and following this blog is one of the things that I do for fun. Thanks again!

  • Ratna12

I just saw Kris on channel 4 local channel.

Kris just said “Well, I got invited and it’s Elton John and it’s for a good cause”.

And at the right side of the footage there is NBC logo with NBCLA.COM. So maybe it eventually there will be a footage there.

    So Cool! Happy for Sandra!

Apparently she won the Razzie award for worst actress as well. And she showed up and made an acceptance speech. hahah its soo funny. http://www.cinematical.com/2010/03/07/watch-this-sandra-bullocks-razzies-acceptance-speech/

Did anyone happen to get a recording of the opening dance number? I hadn’t set my DVR and missed it.

I saw lots of SYTYCD dancers on the 2nd number, though. Very cool to see them.

I think it’s awesome that Kris and Allison were invited to Elton John’s party. What a treat to meet and take pics with him!

Sandra Bullock deserved the Razzie, but NOT the Oscar. What was with the red red lipstick?

  • http://MJO judes

Well I happen to think Sandra is a great actress – although I haven’t seen this film.

Did anyone else notice that in the “Memorium” section, Farrah & Golden Girl Bea were missed out on the list. The producers excuse was ‘time”- excuse me- they put in Michael Jackson who did what 1 film – & they had many Producers who no-one except family & friends would have missed. Farrah dies around the same time as MJ & she went into the background then & is scorned now!!
The general Public in all countries know the actors & actresses – to me they should be shown first. These in my opinion are glaring omissions!!
