UPDATE: Entertainment Weekly has more on the woman who played lead guitar last night on Carrie Underwood’s performance of “Last Name”. She’s Australian, and her name is Orianthi. She’s currently signed to 19 Recordings/Geffen Records with an album in the works.

Jennifer Hudson accepts a Grammy for Best R&B Album. Check out Whitney’s rambling intro:

Carrie Underwood tears it up on “Last Name”:

There isn’t a dry eye in the house as Jennifer Hudson sings “You Pulled Me Though”:

Gotta love the humility that comes across with Miss Hudson. And does Whitney seem high?

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Whitney seemed stoned out of her mind. But, who knows….

I don’t know how Jennifer pulled that off, but it was all kinds of awesome. I think I cried enough for the both of us.

I am so happy for Jennifer. She certainly deserves some happiness after the tragedies that have occurred in her family. Carrie and Jennifer gave wonderful performances. Carrie has grown as a performer since her Idol days.

  • JOJOSIE

I think Jennifer deserved the award for her album but I wonder if she and others may feel that she got the pity vote. I hope not, but I wish she’d have won under different circumstances. The girl has never had fashion sense, altho I thought the dress she sang in was well done, the one she accepted in, IMO was sort of a mess. The thing I remember most about her on idol was not her singing but the bad choices she made in her wardrobe. Her singing became more noticeable after idol, a lot more noticable. She is a brave soul and it’s nice she has her fiance to help her cope

Btw, anyone notice Jordin spazzing out when Whitney came on stage? Hee. love her. (she was behind Paul McCartney)

Jennifer’s performance was the best part of the entire show. I can’t believe she was able to hold it together to sing those words. Talk about being appropriate for the moment. She’s a true survivor and you know what, we are all part of the “you” that pulled her through. All the positive thoughts, prayers, tears that were shed for her, and positive comments on message boards and forums contributed to her healing. What a glorious night for her and her fans.

It’s always refreshing for me to see something sans cleavage so kind of liked her acceptance dress.

Both vids brought tears to my eyes. Congratulations Jennifer!

Regardless of how Whitney acted, she looked old. :( (I’m guessing this isn’t all due to age.)

  • IdolFanatic

Carrie has grown as a performer since her Idol days.

She really has. She seemed to be having a lot of fun up there on the stage :)

  • Paula

I think Jennifer was great tonight, although I didn’t care for the dress she wore when she received her award.

Carrie has taken up screaming through her song. I’m at a party, and nobody like it.

Whitney must be on something. She was spaced out.

  • Niall

Actually Whitney came across pretty normal tonight (for her) compared to stuff I’ve seen her do and say over the last five or six years. With all her drug use she might have done some brain damage, which could also account for what seems like odd behavior.

Aw, screw it. She was probably smoking a bowl in the ladies room before coming onstage. LOL

  • Dlynne

I really like how this show has become performance driven in the past couple of years. I like the odd pairings, too.

Speaking of performances, Carrie has really stepped up hers. She looks completely comfortable on that stage and she always looks fabulous. I do think she oversang the song toward the end, but I still appreciate that she really has the vocals for a live performance.

Say what you may about Idol winners and favorites, those kids can sing well live unlike Chris Martin who hardly ever pulls it off.

Jennifer stole the show. And broke my heart.

  • stelladallas

Carrie has taken up screaming through her song.

I think she had to, to be heard over the LOUD band.

  • SashaB

    Great recap, MJ.

Yay for Jennifer and Carrie. They were wonderful. They looked gorgeous, too. I thought their performances were incredible. Jennifer had me in tears. Carrie has awesome stage presence now compared to just a year ago. Way to represent the Fremantle franchise.

I have never liked Leona Lewis. Hee. Cowell must be so mad. Double hee.

Dave Grohl FTW. He looked so happy.
    Happy about Adele beating JBs.
    Radio Head was awesome.
Katy Perry was boring and the big fruit on stage with her? Resembled velveeta goodness, no?

  • Jx223

I thought that Jennifer and Carrie both looked great tonight.

I’m not sure what was going on with Whitney. I thought that she was acting like she had made a Comeback, and IMO, the audience was acting like she had as well. I think that a lot of people were happy to see her. I thought that she was acting kind of diva-ish tonight, but it also looked like she was shaking at times.

Also, did anyone else spot Ricky Minor playing tonight onstage? I saw him twice. Once when Justin Timberlake and Al Green were performing together and once when B.B. King, Buddy Guy, John Mayer and Keith Urban, were all performing together. He looked like he was having a good time. :smile2_tb:

    Jennifer made me weep buckets.

Whitney is still a hot mess. Her speaking voice sounded terrible and she looked and acted stoned and trying to maintain.

Breaks my heart that such a beautiful woman with an incredible voice fucked herself up…so sad.

  • SallyinIllinois

Is Carrie stepping into Rock territory? That’s a stone rock song if I ever heard one (vs country). She’s got some of the best writers in the biz. I hope she doesn’t blow her vocal chords. (Now some people will say that she was screaming, which could be, so I don’t understand how Fantasia is criticized for “screaming” and not Carrie; just an observation)
It seemed like the c&W stars in the audience weren’t too happy with the performance. See my above quotes.

Nah, I think Whitney was trying to take up as much air time as she possibly could.

Ricky Minor is the hardest working musician — he was at Clive’s party last night. At least he’s not a starving musician.

  • SparklesATL

Whitney seemed to be possessed by the spirit of Marlyn Monroe. When she did that bit congratulating (for what?) Clive Davis I expected her to break into “Happy Birthday Mr. President.”

Did Jennifer get up from the table and leave her napkin tucked into her dress when she accepted the award?

Jennifer deserves every award she gets. No pity there. She is probably the most successful idol and will continue to be. I know Carrie and Daughtry have had huge success with their albums, but Jennifer has a Grammy AND an Oscar. She’ll continue to rack up awards too. She is just getting started.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

Whitney was plain weird. I watched it again, and she was all Paula-like. Hehe. But, after she freaked me out when she made her appearance at the Michael Jackson 30th Anniversary concert, she definitely looked healthy last night. That speaks volumes.

  • jumpstart

Jennifer Hudson was breathtakingly amazing last night. Simply brilliant.

  • BootStar

Here’s a brief little clip of Jennifer singing Neil Diamond’s Holly Holy at the MusicCares awards the night before. She even made a believer out of Rock uber-cynic Bob Lefsetz. Now that’s saying something!

  • abbysee

Whitney looks healthier, but I think she has a long way to go. I don’t think she was hogging the limelight at all, I just think she was trying to muddle her way through and nerves got the better of her.

  • terps

I love Jennifer but I have to disagree. No idol has ever come close to reaching the success of Kelly. I’d say Jennifer is a close thrid behind Carrie. Yes Jennifer has won an Oscar but Carrie is on the Opry. Jennifer still has alot to do in the album sales department is she wants to move up the idol alumni chart. She has though proved to be the only real star from S3

CArrie Underwood – vocals shine as usuall and did fine .She seems a little wooden in live preformances and does better if she stays in a certain area..

Jennifer- Her vocal prefromance was heartfelt and good .She earned that grammy along with the Oscer.

Sarah-Krause the bluegrass queen has 26 .and Plant has 8 grammys none from the LEd Zeplen days.

  • SashaB

“Whitney seemed to be possessed by the spirit of Marlyn Monroe”

    Bwah!

But seriously, I was sad for her. I thought she had gotten healthier…

Jennifer Hudson is a bonafide star. Oscar and Grammy winner. And she seems like a real sweetheart. She’s the whole package. Best of luck to her. Sky is the limit for her.

I think sometimes her movements come off as awkward looking like she’s trying too hard. But she seems a lot more comfortable on the stage than ever before to me.

Darn, I put my Grammy comments in another thread before I saw this one. Oh well. To sum it up, Jennifer was beautiful and her singing was spectacular. The white napkin was distracting but she looked great for the performance. She seemed sad, happy, dignified and noble. What a strong woman.

Carrie was great, I loved her performance. She has come a long, long ways as far as stage presence. She’s exciting to watch now. And she isn’t too thin, after all, she looks great.

I think Whitney looks better than she did at her worst but not all the way healed yet. It was moving when she gave Jennifer the award. I give her credit for coming back and hope she continues on that path to recovery.

Loved the Miley/Taylor duet, Cold Play (love that song), Paul McCartney, Al Green, and others I’ve probably forgotten. Ryan did look “lubricated” as that article put it. I liked him that way, he was more relaxed and fun.
