Check out the new pop-sorta-country-but-not-really single “Red” from Taylor Swift. WELL IT’S GOT BANJO SOOOOO. Uhm. Ok.

“Red” is the title track from Taylor’s upcoming album. The singer will release a new track once a week up until the album release on October 22.

Snarking aside, as a pop song, I kinda like this one.

As a pop song, yes, I like it. In no way is it country, though.

Catchy melody though it sounds a lot like some of her other hits. The banjo made me LOL because it didn’t fit the song any better than the autotuned “re eh eh eh eh”s in the song. IMO they tried too hard to make the song sound different than the Taylor hits it sounds like. It’s a run of the mill guitar based pop song, let it be a run of the mill guitar based pop song.

Some of the similes she uses in this song make no sense. A crossword puzzle always has a right answer so I don’t even know what she was trying to do there. It’s lyrics like these that remind me Taylor could really use a cowriter sometime, like Liz Rose. I noticed this on her last album too, she lets the diary ramblings go too far and she recycles a lot of her imagery.

IMO CaseyJ’s Why I’m Feeling Blue (which is an unreleased track) did a better job of using a color scheme for lyrics:

Why do we follow this girl on this website….I am beyond sick and tired of her

I really like this one, that girl can write songs. I agree, though, she could use a co-writer to help her edit her repetitive themes. Love her melodies.

Good songs. I like that she is followed here.

This girl has a Midas touch!!!

I am not a Taylor Swift fan at all.  But this one isn’t bad — I might not automatically change the station if it came on.

I still think Fearless was her best album. Her debut album wasn’t that bad either. Her last album was pretty meh for me (I only played the whole album few times, shocking for me). I’m iffy about this Red album. Hmmm. What do you think?

I don’t know that I’m the best person to answer this tbh because I’ve never been a Taylor fan and the whole fake country thing with her really annoys me. I’d say her debut album and Fearless were probably her most authentic albums. Unfortunately with Fearless Taylor learned that turning her songs into blind items was a great marketing tactic and that’s fed a lot of artifice into her writing. That being said, I think there are some really strong coffeehouse pop songs on Speak Now (Last Kiss is an example of Taylor at her best IMO).

I haven’t been impressed by any of the songs they’ve released off the new album yet. Begin Again and Red both seem like lesser versions of stuff Taylor’s already released and I feel like the producers are trying too hard to make it sound like she hasn’t left country behind even though she has. Never Ever Like Whatever is embarrassing. That being said, Taylor wrote a song with Dan Wilson that’s rumored to be on the album and I feel like whatever she did with fun. producer Jeff Bhaskar might be a good change for her.

I remember standtotheright saying she thought Taylor could really benefit from taking some time off from the spotlight, doing some Peace Corps work, and living life. I really agree with that. I feel like the celeb bubble’s in full effect for Taylor and she’s kind of stuck mentally at the age she broke through. It was impressive that she expressed the mind of a teenage girl so well on Fifteen back in 2008 but it’s not cute now when she’s still stuck in that same adult-child mindset about love and growing up 4 years later. I think she’s aware of that and maybe there’ll be songs on Red that try to seem more grown up but, I still think she acts like somebody who’s let her life be defined by the fantasies of her very young fanbase.
