Taylor Hicks performs the single “What’s Right is Right” from his new album, The Distance, available now everywhere.

Video after the JUMP…

I’d say that performance was way better than any of the promo performances he did on the last single. He looked really happy. Sounded really good/strong. That song is the one I like the LEAST on the CD, but he did a nice job w/ it.

  • Frogpond

I like the song he did a great job with it .He is still my #1 favorite winner .

  • abbysee

Taylor looks better now than on his heavily airbrushed first post idol cd. He sounds really good too.

  • KTINTN

Missed it this AM, thank you MJ.

  • hicksluvbug

I loved the performance! He sounded wonderful! He is truly a good looking man! I was able to hear him perform What’s Right is Right at Martys’ in Chicago and maybe that is why I really like the song. I always prefer his live performances, all about the visual. He looked like he was just so happy which just makes me smile. Can’t wait for more TV appearances!

Thank you mj for posting this. I can’t never get enough of Taylor. Taylor’s voice was right on. He looked so handsome.

  • lakies

This made my morning! May this be the first of many terrific tv appearances for this album. :)

  • holeighannie

    He’s so lovely, hehe.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Great performance! He was relaxed, happy and sounded fantastic. Good to see him feeling so comfortable.

  • kimberann

He really is good looking. He does resemble George Clooney here. SOUL PATROL!! :cool2_tb:

  • MaryS-NJ

Thanks for the video, MJ. Taylor sounds great and looks great! It’s really nice to see him looking so happy.

  • KTINTN

Taylor is also “scheduled” for ‘Idol Tonight’, tonight according to their promos.

  • http://jgrollersellshomes.com juliegr

Thanks for the video hookup, mj. — Glad he was invited and able to perform on Ellen’s show. Taylor and the band did a good job on his first TV appearance singing the new single.

  • kimberann

^^I thought Kelly and Kayne were on AI tonight.

  • calimari

“Idol Tonight” is that pre-show thing done on the TV Guide channel. Not the actual Idol show on tonight.

  • jersey

Thanks MJ! He does sound and look really good. And I do believe that’s Brian Gallagher on sax!

  • folk

i kind of hate this song.

  • mac

Aww, Taylor did a great job! I still love Taylor. I will be picking up his album this weekend.

Thanks for that Idol tonight tip!!

  • thedingoateyobaby

    On Taylor….he looks MAH-velous.
On his voice….effing beautiful, raspy and all the stuff that I love.
On the song…..it sucks donkey balls. I HATE this song and it pisses me off that he has a GREAT song on the CD (Seven Mile Breakdown) and he or they chose to do this soft core fluffer nutter instead. That pisses me off no end.

  • calimari

Folk, I know. The good news is it’s the worst song on the CD, in my opinion. Why it’s the single I’ll never guess.

  • thesheriff

dang, he looks good to me! this song still reminds me in places, of kelly’s breakaway. can’t figure it out.

  • wildwood girl

Wow Taylor was fantastic. I love this song. And he is so handsome.

    Taylor is also à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“scheduledà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idol Tonightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢, tonight according to their promos.>>

Oh dear god please dont let him do this POS song. What would be GREAT was if he and E did their duet. ANYeffingTHING but WRIR.

If he does WRIS then there are some serious issues with whoever runs his campaign and if its him then he sucks at it.

He looks gorgeous just the same but there are at least 3 songs off that CD that are really really good tunes, why in hell this one? Wanders off muttering, waiting for my phone to ring. Friends wanting me to remind them why they are supposed to do the bunny hop enthusiastiically for the T man.

I went to Target yesterday to buy the cd-it was sold out.
then went to Walmart and they hadn’t put it out and didn’t even have it :(
    wtf?

  • MaryS-NJ

    On Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.he looks MAH-velous.

Dingo! I don’t know if you are a member of the Boogie Board but they’ve got video of two live radio station accoustic performances of Taylor doing Seven Mile Breakdown only on guitar, one also with harmonica. Really good stuff.

I’ll agree with the folks that have said WRIR is not a favorite cut from the album, but I have to tell you it’s stuck in my head since watching the Ellen show video. It’s not an unpleasant earworm.

  • thedingoateyobaby

    Hey MaryS

Boogie Board schmoogie board. I can barely handle this board and this one is home for me but thanks for thinking of me.

Taylor has a “taylor made” hit in Seven Mile Breakdown. Why he doesnt see this is beyond my comprehension.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

MJ, I know that you have posted some videos in the past of the American Idol Extra show. I don’t get the Fox reality station so have only seen it here. If you are so inclined, whenever they show the episode that JP is talking about above, could you please post it? It sounds like a great line up and I’d love to see Ace do his thing as host. Would also love to see Taylor on the show! Thank you!!

  • calimari

Dingo – I know. I listened to that single a zillion times and, while it grew on me from “hate it” to “whatever”, I was quite worried that the rest of the CD would be like that. There are, fortunately, several other songs on the CD I really like. I know the next single off it will be better because, well, all the other songs are better, IMO. But this is the one he’ll be promoting on all the shows, so I just hope he continues to deliver it as well as he did this AM, and looking so fine. He does look happy & that makes me happy.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Its just poor judgement Cali, IMO. Im ticked off because he HAS to make a great impression after the disasterous 1st CD and most people are gonna roll their eyes and make fun of him because this is just a crappy song. I hope Im wrong, I really do but I will cringe if this is the song he does in front of Simon on Idol tonight. I can read Simon’s mind and worse, I agree.

I love Taylor though my patience is waning. He cant continue to make serious bad moves with his career. and if he cant see that SMB is head and shoulders a better song to debut than WRIR then he has more issues than he knows.

I already purchased the CD via ITunes. I have done my part. The rest is up to him.

He does look fabulous though doesnt he. Handsome as can be. Thats my guy.

  • SparklesATL

Note to Taylor: The next time you’re singing this on tv, try not to grin so much when you sing the opening lines “When there’s sadness in your eyes…”

I’m sure he couldn’t help it. He just looked so darn happy to be there.

As usual, the live performance is better than the recorded.

Anyone catch the trademark Taylor Hicks move at the very end?

  • http://emmarude65embarqmail.com carroll

I love the song What’s Right is Right. It makes me smile to hear and watch Taylor sing it. He looks sooo good. I love his new hair style too.

  • Whomp

Love Taylor and the performance. Would have enjoyed a bit of an interview but hey I will take it. I agree about the facial expression not syncing with the lyric. I also wish he would stop pointing to his head/face. He can go to his heart but not above…or below lol.

I do not believe he is leading with the strength on this album and that is his plan. There are some kickass songs on this disc and I can’t wait for the Walmart bonus of Hide Nor Hair which had me weak in the knees live.

    Love Taylor!

  • taylorwow

It’s funny how subjective music is. I absolutely love What’s Right is Right, and Seven Mile Breakdown is my least favorite song on the album–I will probably fast forward through it. I thought Taylor’s performance was wonderful–was a bit surprised at his demeanor. I love the smile, but if you want to see him sing WRIR with sheer agony, then watch his video. Huge contrast in mood.

  • JOJOSIE

Thanks for the video MJ as I had a dentist appointment this morning and couldn’t watch but I was fairly confident you’d have it posted. My dentist was a fan of Taylor’s when he was on Idol. I know he likes country, so I told him to go to Target and for $9.95 he could have Taylor’s new CD and he’d find enough with a country feel that he’d like it. Some fans need a little encouragement and just knowing the CD is out there.

  • yummystars

I don’t mind the song at all. I think it was written by the producer of the album so that’s probably why it’s the first single.

I think he has grown a lot as a singer. He sounded great and looked happy.

  • Paula

I thought Taylor did a great performance on Ellen, and one can see how happy he was to be there!

  • KTINTN

Taylor is on ‘Idol Extra’ on the TV Guide Network as we speak.

  • skylight1219

Taylor usually is always smiling. I guess music is subjective, because I absolutely love WRIR. That makes for a good album when some like one song and some another. There’s something for everyone.

  • dante

Watching this makes me want a Taylor tour!!!!! I had forgotten how good he is live – makes me smile to see him so happy and handsome.

    Go Taylor!

  • Laurel

    Why ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the single Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll never guess.

My guess is that it’s the Climie/Morgan connection?

Count me in as a non-fan of “Seven Mile Breakdown”. IMHO, it doesn’t have a hook to make for radio airplay.

  • gabam

I just watched the video. Thanks MJ.

I liked the song. I may buy it. I bought my first ever Taylor song Tuesday because it was a duet with Elliott.

  • hickifino

Taylor looks and sounds great. He sings with passion and enthusiasm. A couple of members of his touring band were with him – musical director and guitarist Josh Smith and on saxophone Brian Gallagher. Like dingo, I downloaded the album from Itunes.

  • marco5ny

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s funny how subjective music is. I absolutely love Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Right is Right

I agree 100%. But after watching his live performance, I know why I liked the video so much and it reminds me why I am not a Taylor fan. He sounds great but I’m just not into his performance style. On the word “heart” point to heart. On the word “mind” point to head. Point to eye on the word “cry.” Point out to audience on “you” and bring open hand to chest on “me.” And the foot tapping and finger snapping against the beat is really distracting. I think I’ll buy the album but I can’t imagine enjoying a concert.

  • dancingqueen

In concert he’s too busy with guitars, harmonicas, cowbell & tambourine to be doing much pointing. I thought he did a great job on Ellen, and I like the song. It’s not my favorite on the CD, but, we’re all going to have a different favorite, and a different take on which should have been the single. None of us, is any more right about the choice than he is & it’s his career.

  • hicksaholic

    Marco
Go to a concert. I think you will like him. I do agree with you on all the obvious gestures. He did it more than normal today, perhaps nerves for his first big live tv appearance. But dancingqueen is right, none of that or very little do you get at a live concert

  • YankeeFan08

The song is a snoozefest. Don’t care for it at all. He really is just a so-so singer. No star quality at all. I always wondered why Taylor doesn’t color his hair.

  • spanishfan

It is so true that music is a very personal choice. One ´s man ´s meat is another ´s poison. I love this song. I loved seeing him live too, but I like him up close and personal on tv. Super stuff Taylor. Ordered my cd ages ago and now have to wait for it to arrive in Marbella and be sent on to me here in South Africa. Too long. I have two male favourites and one female in all the years and those are David Cook, Taylor Hicks and Diana DeGarmo and they still continue to delight me with their performancs.

  • Glamour

What’s Right Is Right is an adult pop song and I think Taylor still wants pop success. It’s just an OK song for me.

I personally think Taylor does better on faster songs. He shines on songs like Seven Mile Breakdown and Woman’s Got To Have It. His gritty voice is well suited for Blues/Rock and Soul/R&B. He should just stick to that. I would love for Taylor to do Allman Bros. or Kid Rock kind of music. His voice for some reason does not translate well to these slow pop tunes.

  • CookorHubbyHmm

He looks great and his voice has such a unique and beautiful tone to it. I don’t care much for the song, but I like the quality of his voice so much, it’s well worth a listen! I love his grey hair…it’s sexy!

  • YankeeFan08

Grey hair might be sexy on a guy in his 50s or 60s but definitely not on a 30-something guy. I don’t get his appeal at all. To each his own, I guess.

  • neonorange

I agree grey hair is sexy. Taylor Hicks, Richard Gere, Anderson Cooper – all f’n hawt. Even Halle Berry looked beautiful in X-men. I guess the grey gives an illusion of experience beyond their years.

  • http://emmarude65embarqmail.com carroll

Well, I love the whole cd. I love the whole Taylor package.
My favorite on the cd for now is: “Maybe We Should”. But, I won’t skip any of them. Still waiting on my shipment from Amazon. Going to Walmart tomorrow to get the cd with the bonus song: “Hide Nor Hair”

  • MN Sue

Good luck on finding it, Carroll. I suggest calling ahead.

  • Easy

Grey hair might be sexy on a guy in his 50s or 60s but definitely not on a 30-something guy. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get his appeal at all. To each his own, I guess.

    Right.

For instance, I don’t get the appeal of Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson or the fake rockers like Daughtry and David Cook.

I wouldn’t walk across the street to see any of them play.

But Hicks? I’d crawl all seven miles.

  • http://emmarude65embarqmail.com carroll

MN Sue. Walmart didn’t have any cds. I had to go anyway so it wasn’t a wasted trip.
But I ordered the cd from Best Buy. They have 2 bonus tracks on the cd.
