Taylor Hicks new album   The Distance drops today.   If you weren’t crazy about Taylor’s post Idol debut Taylor Hicks, check out this new one.

I wasn’t digging the first few cuts on the album, but beginning with the pedal-steel inflected “Seven Mile Breakdown,” it really picks up. Listen to the album at AOL music HERE.

Bonus points to Taylor for covering the Nick Lowe’s “I Live on a Battlefield.” Yay!   And don’t miss the old-school duet with Elliott Yamin, “Woman’s Got to Have It.”   Good stuff.

Taylor performs his single “What’s Right is Right” on the Ellen Degeneres Show, Wednesday March 11.

Good stuff — been enjoying this CD as the tidbits have been dropped over the last few weeks.

You’re so right — Taylor and Elliott are amazing together — love WGTHI.

BTW, is the term “pedal-steel” or “steel-pedal”?

I’m jazzed that Taylor covered Nick Lowe’s I Live on a Battlefield. The best thing I liked about Taylor was his diverse musical sensibility, which wasn’t readily apparent on his first album. I’m glad he had more control this time.

Love-love-love T-H-E-Y together again dueting on a soulful Bobby Womack tune (T-H-E-Y = Taylor Hicks-Elliott Yamin, my AI5 faves).

  • abbysee

I can’t wait to get my hands on this cd. Terrie, that is exactly why I love Taylor too, his diverse musical sensibility. I love all of the different flavors of this cd.

  • thesheriff

whoa! i finally FINALLY listened to it! love love love LOVE the duet with Elliot! Battlefield, Nineteen…hell..I might actually crack the bank open for this one.

  • neonorange

The bonus track on iTunes – Yes we can is now my favorite. Damn its good.

  • GwenB

Dropping in to add that the video of What’s Right Is Right is now available on iTunes as well. Yay!

Great way to start my morning! Buy my favorite Idol AND support my favorite Idol site! I just love this cd!

  • abbysee

whoa! i finally FINALLY listened to it! love love love LOVE the duet with Elliot! Battlefield, Nineteenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦hell..I might actually crack the bank open for this one.

Go on, do it. The economy needs a little stimulation! It’s a fine damn cd. I am proud of Taylor.

  • SparklesATL

MJ, don’t you mean Nick Lowe’s “I live on a battlefield” and not “Love is a battlefield?”

It would have been cool if he had done “Love is a battlefield” though.

As far as pedal steel vs. steel pedal, think of it this way, it’s a steel guitar that has pedals, hence the name pedal steel. Although I’m sure the pedals can be made with steel, then it would be a pedal steel with steel pedals. :)

I think the first half of the album is pretty meh but things pick up at “Seven Mile Breakdown.” “Womans got to have it” is by far the best. The addition of Elliott brings Taylor’s singing up a notch or two.

If they wanted to, they could be the Hall and Oats of this generation. That would be awesome.

Now, question to everyone. Remember the Ford commercial and how much grief Taylor got from “possibili-deees?” Does it seem like he’s over-enunciating in this album? Especially in the first few songs.

  • calimari

I agree that the first few cuts don’t hit me like the 2nd half of the CD, but overall it’s much better than the first one. Haven’t heard any of the “bonus tracks” yet so I’m happy to hear the Itunes bonus track is good. I do love Taylor & Elliott together – Elliott has such an outstanding voice, I’m just not into the type of music he generally sings. I think they play off each other really well & enjoy performing together, which is cool.

Here is a track by track review of THE DISTANCE :

    http://blogs.usatoday.com/idolchatter/2009/03/track-by-track.html#more

IMHO, this is a very good, objective review of someone who actually TOOK THE TIME to listen, unlike the silly one liners at Entertainment Weekly.

    Also, who woulda thunk,

AmericanIdol.com has an ad for Taylor’s new CD displayed their page!

The duet with Elliott is great. Might actually hit iTunes for that one. Shame about that, hmmmm …. unfortunate …. album cover. Not appealing at all. Elliott’s Fight for Love OTTH is all kinds of cool. Red tie, hat, whiskers, red stripes. One cool dude.

I ended up buying only 3 tracks. I am a crappy fan.

  • itsallgrey

If you want a really good TH song, go to Target and get the bonus track…Indiscriminate Act of Kindness. It makes the CD. Good stuff.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Love the bonus on Itunes too. “Yes, We Can” Terrific!

  • dancingqueen

Stayed up waaaaay past my bedtime last night to d/l the iTunes version. Love the funky bonus “Yes, We Can”, but, I actually like 90% of the CD to start with. Can’t wait to hear the other two bonus songs. I’m lovin’ the diversity on this CD, and looking forward to him kickin’ butt with these songs in concert.

  • KTINTN

If you’re having trouble finding his CD this is why; (sigh)
TY to a post at the Boogie …

    Rick from A2M (Taylors distributer)

‘We are aware that there are a handful of Target stores only have the regular version due to a shipping issue, but they are due to receive the exclusive version in a few days. Rest assured they will be available at Target stores only, not online.

Similar issue with Wal-Mart but 90% of their product was delivered and should be in stores today.”

  • hicksaholic

Man Taylor can’t catch a break can he?

I went to Walmart at about 10- no Taylor and none in the back.

  • KTINTN

    Another email someone received;

    from A2m
“Thanks for writing. Sorry for your frustration. Some of our shipments to the west coast were delayed, some taking as long as 8 days. With the short ship windows retailers give us, some stores out west did not have product today for street date. That was probably the case for you since you are in California. 90% of the Target stores have their product as do 88% of the Wal-Mart stores. Most stores should be in stock in the next day or 2.

Please give me your address and I will send you a promotional copy to make up for it. Sound good?”

  • JOJOSIE

I picked up my copy today at Target, but only got to hear it once but I intend to give it more attention tomorrow. I was surprised that in the thank you section one of the last names was Simon Fuller. Maybe TPTB have recognized that it may hurt Idols image if they don’t support all of their Idol or am I expecting too much. I’ve heard Taylor will be performing on Idol this year so maybe they have made up somewhat.

  • MaryS-NJ

well, I downloaded from iTunes. I like a bunch of the songs and a few I’m not so crazy about. I relly like Taylor’s version of Yes You Can, Seven Mile Breakdown and his duet ith Elliott.

Has anyone listened to the bonus track from Walmart and Target to give a description?

  • KTINTN

‘Indiscrimanate Acts Of Kindness’ from the Target CD is 7 mins of PURE Taylor. It’s heartwrenching soul from the inside out.

  • MaryS-NJ

KTINTN – Thanks! I’m trying to decide which “physical CD” w/bonus track to buy.

  • momo

Why Indiscriminate Act of Kindness is not on the CD is unbelievable. It is by far the best song on the album. Why is it a bonus? Haven’t heard the other 2 bonus tracks, but wow…Itsallgrey got it sooo right. Thank you
ETA: Why, oh why wasn’t Maybe You Should the first single??? I am flabbergasted.

  • Lu

I absolutely love the Taylor/Elliott duet! Also really diggin 7 Mile Breakdown and some of the other tracks as well! This is way more the type of music I thought Taylor would make. Good luck Taylor!!!

  • hickifino

I enjoy the Itunes bonus track Yes You Can. Great bass and horns lay the beat, then Taylor wails (fits his style and voice so perfectly!) and in the background is Delbert McClinton. Great stuff!

  • cheese

I ‘d like to hear the Target bonus track, but I just do not want the whole CD. Oh well, maybe it will turn up on YouTube. I really like “I Live on a Battlefield” and “Yes We Can,” so I bought those.
