Taylor Hicks recently performed for passengers on a Southwest Airlines flight. Watch him entertain those on board with a performance of “Seven Mile Breakdown” in this video from the airline.

The American Idol season 5 winner also tells the story about how a free voucher from Southwest after the New Orleans Hurricane Katrina helped him get to Las Vegas for auditions! “Needless to say, I’m pretty thankful to Southwest Airlines,” he says.

Watch the video below.

Taylor Hicks was always an awesome guy with a jolly personality. He maybe didn’t deserve to win idol based on vocals but he put a smile on everyone’s faces every week and that’s how he accumulated support.

    The TSA fails again.

  • Goodvibes27

I’m kinda glad Taylor wasn’t allowed to play on his idol season, otherwise he would have been known as WGWG #1, but he kind of compensated with an over-the-top persona that, love him or hate him, everyone will remember. The downside to Taylor not being able to play means that the general public only saw half his talent and therefore tend to take him less seriously. He’s one of the best musicians to come out of idol and his singing is underestimated too.

I’m confused – is this an airline sponsored performance? did they pay him to fly and sing?

  • Goodvibes27

Yes this was a Southwest Airlines and Taylor Guitar sponsored promotion. They had several other bands do this in May.

Love Taylor Hicks. I am a huge fan of jazz and the blues and Taylor fits that to a T. He is one awesome entertainer. I have met him on several occasions and attended several shows around the SE. He loves what he does and it def shows when he is on stage. By the way, he is one of the nicest, most personable people you will ever meet. Fan for LIFE!

  • Heidijoy

    Nice treat!!!

  • Kariann Hart

I actually can’t think of anyone else who had the total package that season. I did like Katharine but knew she could not beat him. There was a reason it was the most watched season, and Taylor is one of the reasons.

  • Cheryl Elliott Feltman

I believe Southwest is also the airline that let Hunter Hayes play during flight. I think it’s awesome, kinda like a free mini concert and the celebrities seem to enjoy it too.

  • Cheryl Elliott Feltman

I don’t even know what TSA means, but you are apparently someone who wants to sleep when they fly. I saw Hunter Hayes do a mini concert on an airline and would have LOVED to have seen Taylor. He is so nice and a great musician and vocalist!

  • Kariann Hart

Taylor really does come off like that. He is an entertainer, and I would laugh at some of the goings on between him, Simon, and Ryan. Season 5 is my second favorite.

  • girlygirl

yeah it is a promo the airline does. Kris Allen performed on a flight as well, and I think Casey James did as well (or was it Casey Abrams?)

    Here’s my S5 breakdown:

    Best vocals: Daughtry,Mandisa, Paris Bennett

    Decent vocals,great personalities: Taylor Hicks,Eliot Yamin,Bucky Covington,Kellie Pickler

Got by based on looks: Kat McPhee,Ace Young

Stole spots from more deserving semi finalists because their cute: Kevin Covais,Lisa Tucker, Millisa Mghee
Semi finalists who got robbed: Ayla Brown,Gideon McKinney,Becky Odohnayou

  • Kariann Hart

I do agree with much of what you wrote. I was impressed with both Mandisa and Paris. I believe Lisa went on to do some Broadway work. Gideon should have waited one more year to get over the death of his father. Definitely a lot of talent in Season 5. Still Taylor was my favorite. :o)

Taylor is truly a great entertainer and can put a smile on most anyone…Paula Abdul was right. A great bluesman as well. I’m seeing him at Harrahs in 2 weeks. Can’t wait!

  • lovetheusa1776

Love that guy – one of the few I voted for on Idol. And, yes, great entertainer.

  • abbysee

    I love Taylor.

  • chillj

me too. this is so cute.

  • LA944

It was Casey Abrams. I think he did it a few times

  • fuzzywuzzy

I think that it’s a cool idea to have live entertainment on a flight. Good for Taylor.

  • fuzzywuzzy

Taylor was very cute in this video. The passengers seemed to appreciate his performance too.

  • Liteasy

Taylor was the one that had the “Whole Package”, and nobody else came close to beating him. He’s also the Idol from that year that has ventured into more things than any other: Broadway, own record company, owns restaurant, performer in Las Vegas, written a book, etc.

  • chillj

Cheese, I yodeled once on American and they kicked me off. I might hafta file charges now I know it’s allowed.

  • Miz

I love Southwest’s concerts in the sky. Unfortunately, they never happen on my flights.

  • Miz

I’d put Elliott Yamin as having the best voice. Season 5 was packed with talent. The most of any season in my opinion.

  • MissMyEm

I think Taylor has a great voice and deserved to win his season. No one else appealed to me that season. Go Taylor. Met Taylor a few years back at Walmart of all places. He seems like a really nice guy.

  • Liteasy

Taylor was the first Idol I every voted for, and he has proven to me that his win was worthy. Hope to see him again in the fall at Paris.

  • ellen8

Sing one song, fly free !

  • OldBoy

Daughtry was the best that season. In term of total sales of all the Idol alums. Daughtry is the 3rd behind Kelly and Carrie.

  • OldBoy

Can SW Air have Miley perform her new single and do some twerking?

  • curly_yenta

LOL…That guy was bought‚ sold and owned. If he should have won then he would have. He didn’t. He was a flash in the pan who has done nothing in the last 3 years.

  • Kariann Hart

Curly, I wasn’t sure what you meant by that statement. Who bought, sold, and owned Chris? I really didn’t like his style of singing, but he did sell a lot of records.

  • Goodvibes27

Well, they certainly treated Chris like the winner. I read Clive Davis’ book and he admits he shrugged off Taylor & Kat that season to focus on Chris’s record. Clive said Taylor won because he was good looking and likeable. He also took another jab at Taylor when he said Taylor “wasn’t quite up to the task” of singing “Dancing In The Dark”. Revisionist history at its finest. Hard proof that Taylor was never given a proper chance in his recording career. I’m glad Taylor has established himself as a performer and I think he is a great addition to the Idol “circle of winners”

  • curly_yenta

Clive, of course! He spent a hell of a lot of money selling Daughtry’s music to radio and it worked – for a time. You don’t hear him much anymore, tho… less (or none) money spent….

  • Mateja Praznik

Well, I guess then the majority of signed artists are bought, sold and owned.

Post-grunge sound isn’t that popular anymore, so that’s why Daughtry isn’t on the radio anymore. But, he still had more success than the majority of artists, so it doesn’t really matter.

  • curly_yenta

Most artists ARE bought, sold and owned – that’s right. That’s why most don’t last. The only thing that truely lasts is raw talent and if you don’t have it, your time is limited….. limited until the money runs out. That’s why branching out and reinventing yourself is key to longevity. Taylor Hicks is positive proof of that and has quietly become one of them most successful winners the show ever had.

  • Mateja Praznik

Lol, I don’t see any branching out or reinventing in Taylor Hicks. He is who is always was, old fashioned lounge singer. But that’s okay, as long as he has work. But he isn’t a big success.

  • Goodvibes27

He did Broadway and Vegas, and is planning to release a country album soon, so that covers the reinvention bases pretty well IMO. And while he hasn’t had great recording success, but I would be willing to bet he’s one of the top 6-8 idol earners of all time based on his touring.

  • curly_yenta

Oh but he is – relative to everyone else who’s been on that show and even among the winners, but I’m not going to spend the day trying to convince you. He’s making at least 7-8 figures with his full time Vegas residency. He’s not “lounge act’ – he’s their headliner and advertised as such, but if thinking that makes you feel better, go for it. Peace.

  • escape

Taylor Hicks is positive proof of that and has quietly become one of them most successful winners the show ever had.

Chris Daughtry is considered to be one of the 3 most successful AI alums. Taylor Hicks is considered to be one of the 3 least successful winners. He never even got a 2nd CD. If TPTB truly felt he was a success, they would have at least shown his Vegas segment. I doubt Vegas would be his first choice if he had success in recording, selling, writing or producing music.
