UPDATE: You can listen to a snippet of the single “What’s Right is Right” at Amazon.

Taylor Hicks is currently putting the finishing touches on his next album, according to a data sheet released by Taylor’s promotors, Rocket Science.

The album, titled The Distance, is due to hit stores on March 10.

The single, “What’s Right is Right” will be available at digital outlets on January 20th, and will impact Adult Contemporary radio the same day.

A video shoot is scheduled for the single on January 12.

Print articles include features in Entertainment Weekly and People in February.

An appearance on American Idol is currently in the planning stages.

Taylor will visit Ryan Seacrest at KISS, Jay Leno in mid-February, Regis and Kelly, Ellen DeGeneres, Craig Ferguson and Rachel Ray the week the album drops, plus visits to morning TV shows in every city the show Grease performs.

Currently playing the Teen Angel in the touring company of Grease,   Taylor will perform the new single at the end of every show.   He’s also got club dates set in Maryland, Ohio and Chicago, with more dates to be scheduled.

He’s got a ton of promotion lined up for both the album and the single, including satellite TV on album release day, a radio tour for the single, radio advertising, and tie-ins around Mother’s Day with Hallmark, American Greetings and 1-800 Flowers.

That’s some heavy-duty promotion right there. I’m impressed. It’ll be cool to see Taylor on my TV again in the coming months.

  • SashaB

Taylor was broadcast for a nanosecond on the sidelines of the Eagles/Minnesota game. I couldn’t miss the distinct features or hair. Wonder if AI will invite him to perform?

  • KTINTN

    Yes he will be on AI as stated in the above;

An appearance on American Idol is currently in the planning stages.

  • http://jgrollersellshomes.com juliegr

Thanks, MJ! You’re right — this is some heavy duty promotion and publicity for Taylor’s new CD.

Can’t wait to see how the Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day promotions will be configured. Plus, did you see that there is another tie-in to Hallmark Cards and 1-800-FLOWERS. I’m impressed. :clap_tb:

Speaking for Taylor fans everywhere we are PUMPED!!!!!!! Finally some good promo for Taylor.

  • Glamour

Wow, that sure is lots of promotion lined up. Can’t wait to hear the song. I have a feeling this cd will be 100 times better than his post-Idol cd. Best of luck!

  • calimari

I’m looking forward to this. He’s mentioned in several interviews how these are the best songs he’s ever written, and he seems to have a really good producer – I can’t wait.

  • JNM

So happy he’s getting great promotion. Can’t wait to see him on Craig Ferguson!

  • jersey

Fingers crossed that this is all good! I’m anxious to hear what he puts out.

  • hicksaholic

You can hear a snippet of the single on Amazon.com search Taylor Hicks What’s right is right. If you can’t find it I will try to get the link from the Boogie

  • JulieR

The snippet of the single…. I love what I hear.

  • hicksaholic

I wish Dingo would come back to hear it but my guess is this song is not raw enough for her.

  • Glamour

That’s not what I was expecting to hear. But, I will wait until I hear the entire song, before I decide.

  • mandalay

Nice Q&A article in today’s Hartford Courant.

  • jpfan

Nice promo Taylor. Rocket Science which is doing his promo is also doing Elliott’s album which has been postponed to May. Maybe two Idol related albums in one month was too much. I’m pretty sure they’ll be doing Micheal John’s album as well.

  • Alan

This album will be one of the best ever. The musicians that appear on this album are the best in the industry.
I beg you to Wikipedia these gents that jam.
    Nathan East
    Abe Laboriel, Jr.
    Tim Carmon
    Doyle Bramhall II
    Simon Climie (producer)

    Clapton uses these guys!!!!
    Come on!!

  • abbysee

I can’t wait. The snippet is too short to judge, but I love his voice so that’s a start. I need a little more Taylor in my life. I am just glad that he has some promo, for a minute I thought they would just sorta silently drop it and wait and see what the uber fans do. Glad to see that he will have a video. Taylor’s a handsome guy, they so fell short of utilizing that the first time out.

  • LadyBeBop

Let’s see…14 days, 6 hours and 54 minutes until Jan. 20 when the single drops.

Two months, four days, 6 hours and 54 minutes until March 10 when the CD drops.

    Can’t you see I’m excited?

(But to try to dig up the pocket change to get to Grease later on this month…Cincinnati’s Aronoff Center and Oakley’s 20th Century Theater are less than 30 minutes from my house.)

  • Glamour

Alan, nobody cares about the musicians..it’s the songs that matter. That little snippet was not impressive to me, but I’ll wait until I hear the entire song. Those lyrics are not very good, and let’s hope the entire song is not like that.

  • jpfan

I think Taylor’s voice is very distinctive and any new music will make his fans happy. But I’ll agree that the lyrics are kind of terrible and hope the whole song is better.

  • Lera

While I voted very hard each week for Taylor, he lost some of his luster with me. I listened to the snippet and while it seems ok, it also seems very cheesy to me. My guess is Taylor fell instep with the Record Industry and is doing things more their way and this is why the better promotion and such.

My guess is Taylor did something that really pissed off producers after AI win. *shrugs*

I don’t know, I liked his music prior Idol, his cockiness after winning was a big turn off ot me.

Sorry Taylor fans but I was one big Taylor fan, I tried to keep that love too. It takes two to tango in that love department.

    Lera

  • Lu

Wow, that’s some incredible promo Taylor has lined up! Good for him.

  • http://jgrollersellshomes.com juliegr

More updated news on Taylor — he’s now his own “record company”, label, producer, owner of the masters, and writer. Not depending on anyone else to make things happen.

  • KTINTN

I already heard about the list of accomplished musicians & I’m very pleased. He has some of the best in the industry and for someone who has his own label now, rather impressive he was able to get these musicians to work w/ him.

He’s getting and doing alot more than he did when he was under AI’s thumb (video, radio play)

and the snippett ……….. very smooth and nice so far.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

A 4 or 5 line sample of lyrics from one song on a cd is not enough to turn me off. The sound of his voice is right. I am thrilled with all the high profile promo he’s going to have. It sounds like they decided to do this one right. I can’t wait!

  • neonorange

I absolutley love it so far. Very old school feel for me mixed with a hint of gospel (perhaps that is the organ). For some reason I am getting a Wilson Pickett vibe. Certainly not as gritty but sweet, soul vibe none-the-less. As for the lyrics, I am guessing this is the chorus and while maybe not as sophisticated as of some of his other songs chorus (The Fall), it is very catchy. Can’t wait to hear more!

ETA: My favorite is the phrasing.

  • lg

Soundin’ pretty good. Just some simple melodic soul and truer to Taylor’s sound. Sure hoping for gospel backup singers somewhere on this CD. Truly, the band he’s put together is top-notch; I knew he wouldn’t disappoint in that regard. Can’t wait to hear the rest. Thanks MJ.

  • KTINTN

Someone else mentioned it had a “Curtis Mayfield – People Get Ready” feel to it. Taylor coverd that song b4 as well. Or maybe a “Crazy Love” by Van Morrison feel, James Taylor.

  • dancingqueen

I’ll worry about lyrics later, right now I’m happy to hear the soul coming out of him. All of this promo, a great studio band & a video – without major label backing – I’m darn happy for the man and wish him much success! I’ll be picking up the single & the CD.

  • neonorange

    Someone else mentioned it had a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Curtis Mayfield – People Get Readyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Yes, that’s it. I was trying to figure it out. Thanks.

  • Easy

Who the heck knows with a snippet that short? But the voice is there. That’s for sure. And it does have a smooth vibe to it.

LOL @ whoever said nobody cares about the musicians. Uh, I do. That’s an A-list group Taylor put together. I am highly impressed. I wouldn’t think he could pull that off. That has to be biggest compliment to Taylor’s career that these guys are willing to work with him.

At the very least, the music’s going to be tight. We shall see on the lyrics.

  • Paula

I think Taylor’s voice sounds great, and I’m happy to see that the band isn’t overpowering like on his post-Idol CD.

  • chewsday

I agree. A-list musicians make A-list music. I love it!

As for the lyrics, Taylor’s lyrics aren’t always sophisticated. His earlier music shows a certain awkwardness with words at times. I think he might be a hit or miss lyricist, but the smoothness and sincerity of his vocals make up for it. I like what I’m hearing with this snippet.

  • makeitdo

I love the snippet. Can’t wait to hear the whole song and the whole cd..I think Taylor’s vocals are wonderful…clear & strong.

  • hoodathunk

It says the song will be targeted to the AC radio, so he has to start there with a smoother song. I like what I’ve heard although I hope at least a few songs on the CD will feature the grittier Taylor sound.

  • Kirsten

Well, it’s great to see this all coming together. As a long time Idol watcher, I’ve seen far too many projects that never came to fruition. He’s managed to put together some great promo and, hopefully, that will help him find the market that will support him so that he can keep making music.

It’s always a tough road as an independent (and even tougher after all the bad press he got last time. Let’s hope the press is ready for a comeback story). I’m a fan, so I’m looking forward to hearing the entire album. I’m not too sure about the snippet and I hope he’s got some good strategists helping to pick the right songs to feature.

  • Grammie Kari

I still look forward to the day AI welcomes Taylor back with open arms. I hope they will have him appear during the season singing his hit song. Wishing him the best!

  • abbysee

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m a fan, so Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m looking forward to hearing the entire album.

    Me too!

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Great promo for Taylor! He’s working all the angles. I’m not surprised. I think the guy is pretty sharp. As for the new single, I can’t judge the song based on a small clip. I’m really looking forward to the new album.

Hmmm… I was interested in seeing Taylor at Martyrs until I found out it is $40. Most acts there play for $7-25 bucks. He doesn’t seem to have an opening band or anything. Heck, even the charity Waco Bros show is $25 and they have other peeps on the bill. I’m pretty sure when I saw James Morrison there it was way less than $40.

ETA: Thanks to a tip from Purps, I just tried to get tix for Adele/James Morrison at the Park West. Price was $20. Sold out. :-(

  • oceana

I love the snippet. It’s intriguing. I can’t wait for the single and the cd. And the promotion. I’ve missed Taylor, glad he’s coming back around.

I do hear a bit of Van Morrison vibe to it. VM is someone that Taylor listens to and admires, among others.

  • poporange

So the single was after the play yeah should known that..I will wait for more of the song also the others on the cd.

Hi pj chat sometime state a time just an e-mail away..(pathitic attempt but smoke signals don’t )

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Hey Pop. I will be in chat when the new season starts. I have to get my laptop fixed. This old desktop has seen better days. ;-)

ETA: I mention Taylor’s concert prices not because I don’t believe his die hard fans will pay them. They will. But if he wants to reach out to new fans (and I think he could from his live performances), then $40 at a place like Martyrs is not going to draw in new peeps. At all.

  • oceana

$40 sounds fair to me for Taylor. If he can get it, good, if not, he’ll adjust it accordingly probably. He’s got overhead and got to make a living. I’ll pay that much to see him. :)

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

I thought Grease was paying his way? ;-)

All musicians have overhead. I would probably pay the $40, but I doubt I could get any local friends to go with me at that price. People who don’t know him might be willing to check him out if he lowered the price. I guess it’s a question of making money vs expanding the fanbase.

  • Lisa

I will probably be very unpopular for this, but that snippet sounds like recycled whomp to me.

I hope there is something different on the cd.

  • davidlove

Taylor, I love ya. Please tell me those are not the best lyrics you’ve got! But hey, I’m liking the sound.

  • dancingqueen

According to Martyr’s the higher price for the show, is because there is a special guest – rumors say Keb’ Mo’ – no confirmation though.

It’s tough to tell what the full song will sound like, when you’re getting what sounds like a bit of verse and a bit of chorus. Hoping he performs it on the WGN morning show today, so we get a better idea.

  • maggiemay

i don’t like the production. it sounds kinda cheap. and then there’s the lyrics..
    :confused_ee:

  • http://airincaol.com coco

When I listened to the song clip…….it sounded as though the singer was emoting vibes to his few loyal followers(from Earth and other locations)–he frequently used words like right–wrong….and at that one “breathy part”….I think he yodled subliminal messages to the tune of Dixie(playing in the background–listen closely)……..

  • Igotthemusicinme

PJ – Tix to the Oakley OH venue are $25 and it is Taylor only.

I like the clip. I prefer to reserve judgment until (1) I hear the entire song AND (2) I hear Taylor sing it live in concert. It’s a whole different vibe live.

    ;p

  • thesheriff

Wow, I think I might like it-even though the words sound like a coronation song. I hear shades of “Breakaway” and “Drift Away” in that small clip.

    I must say – hello LISA! :)

  • dbt

Sigh. I was a HUGE Taylor fan on AI and went to 2 of his concerts. But as far as the general public goes … he is not living up to his early hype. And from listening to this snippet, it’s not going to get any better for him. I know it’s just a snippet but I really dislike this song (piece of song). There is absolutely nothing there to make this a radio hit. And WHY does he keep targeting adult contemporary? That is a death knell. The only AC artists that do well, are the ones that had a hit on another format and the song just crossed over.

Sorry Taylor. This song sounds just like all the others you’ve written. I was really hoping for some exciting collaborations and a little more ‘new’ soul feel.

This song is just bad and will confirm the public’s opinion. Two missteps will be a lot harder to recover from. I fear he’s making a big mistake if this is what the new cd sounds like.

    Sorry. Sigh.

  • Glamour

Well, if that small snippet is indicative of what the cd sounds like, that will be a complete disaster. I don’t know why he wants to take the AC route, but I doubt he will have any success with that.

But, I’ll wait until the cd comes out to decide about it.

  • jpfan

Wow, only $20 to see Adele and James Morrison. Incredible. As far as Taylor charging $40, I guess he’s more into making his established fans pay top price to see him rather than gaining new ones. It is very hard to move a brand new song up the AC chart and most songs are crossover hits.

  • Paula

This song sounds just like all the others youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve written.

dbt – Taylor didn’t write this song. it was written by Dennis Morgan from Nashville who has had numerous hit songs sung by top named stars in all genres’: http://www.dennismorgansongwriter.com/index.php

  • hicksluvbug

I am excited to hear the rest of the song and the entire album! I also can’t wait to see Grease and see Taylor at Martyrs! They both should be amazing! All this excitement about Taylor is long overdue! He is such a humble and hard working person and deserves all the good things that are coming his way!

  • Lisa

    I must say – hello LISA! :)

***Waves & hugs*** Hello girl how are ya? Hope you come around here more often. I have hopes there is more to this cd, but well you know he fooled me once with that last one, lol.

    ETA…trying to fix the quotes.

  • JudyOhio

The first part of the song sounded like it could have fit on his first CD. I didn’t like it very much. As the song begins to open up toward the end of the clip though, I began thinking it could have promise. I’m hoping so much that Taylor can get his recording career back on track. You can tell he’s very excited.

  • hicksaholic

“As the song begins to open up toward the end of the clip though, I began thinking it could have promise”

Judy I kind of thought that too about the end of the clip. In the middle (I think it was the I will share part) it sounded kind of like a Backstreet Boys song. But at the end that run or back chorus or whatever sounded more soulful. I just hope the whole song and particularly the whole album is not an attempt to put Taylor into a pop music genre. It’s amazing to me that Taylor went through all of AI putting his own spin on all those songs without any amount of massive assistance from producers or music industry types but when he gets all that help they seem to really struggle to figure out the songs Taylor should be singing. I’d love to have been a fly on the wall and heard Taylor’s input on the first album and also on this one. It would be interesting to see if he reacted differently.

  • hickifino

Eager to hear more. I enjoy Taylor’s voice and am looking forward to seeing what he can do when given a fair chance. Talented guy who has earned whatever good things come his way.
