Taylor Hicks new single “What’s Right is Right” from his upcoming album The Distance is available now for a first listen.

Check it out HERE.

I have to say, I’m not crazy about the easy-listening adult contemporary vibe Taylor has got going here.   Those of you familiar with Taylor’s post-Idol debut album Taylor Hicks should recognize the sound.

Hopefully, the entire album isn’t Modern Whomp II (Modern Whomp is the phrase Taylor used to describe the sound of his Idol debut), and I can look forward to some grittier tunes on the album.   Yes, I’m an Early Works kind of a gal.   What can I say?

You can purchase “What’s Right is Right” on Amazon and iTunes January 27.

The track list for the album, The Distance, due to drop March 10:

The Distance includes eleven tracks, some co-written by Hicks: “Wedding Day Blues,” “Seven Mile Breakdown,” “What’s Right is Right,” “Hide Nor Hair,” “Woman Gotta Have It,” “New Found Freedom,” “The Distance,” “Nineteen,” “I Live on a Battlefield,” “Yes We Can,” “Maybe You Should,” “Once Upon a Lover of Mine,” “Keepin It Real” and “Indiscriminate Act of Kindness.”

Sorry to disagree with you, MJ, but, I like it very much.

  • neonorange

This song is obviously geared for the radio. I like it and like isn’t a bad start. I would say that this song is better than most of the songs on the TH CD. Whether it actually gets radio play – who knows.

Now Seven Mile Breakdown and Woman Gotta Have It (Bobby Womack) should be effin incredible.

  • hicksaholic

Mj listen to it a few times- it gets better with repeated playing.

  • jersey

Thanks for posting this MJ. It’s not my favorite song. I, too, like his earlier stuff better. That being said, I don’t hate it either. I like the lyrics and the sax – and I do like hearing Taylor’s voice. The melody seems a little predictable.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

I remember reading somewhere that he had said he had some political influences on this cd. I’m assuming that would be “Yes, We Can”. I can’t wait to hear this whole thing!

I like this song and it gets better for me with every playing.

  • spanishfan

I absolutely love it. I cannot wait to buy the album. Taylor well done. It has such a lovely beat to it and the trumpet background. The type of melody that stays in your mind.

  • Whomp

It’s catchy especially after a few listens. Really like the second half. Now as to the CD 11 tracks or 14?lol Taylor, Taylor, Taylor.
Wedding Day Blues-ha can’t wait for that one!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Mj listen to it a few times- it gets better with repeated playing.

I’m really not a big fan of Adult Contemporary music, so I don’t this particular tune will ever grab me, but I will probably listen to it a few more times.

I’m also the kind of fan who can handle not liking everything an artist makes–I don’t feel the need to force feed listenings in order to make myself like it.

Maybe this song isn’t for me–but others may be.

  • baxter

The song is just ok for me. I found the lyrics to be incredibly cliched (sp??) I too am an Early Works kinda gal. And for some reason this song reminds me of another song, whether it’s a previous TH song or someone elses…just can’t put my finger on it.

  • dancingqueen

I’m one who is liking it more, each time I listen(and that’s not 50 times in a row LOL). It’s tough for me to see Taylor ever being a Pop artist, so, where does he fit, besides AC or Country? Even his Early Works songs people say they like, would probably only fit at one or the other charts. Depending on the sound of Seven Mile Breakdown & Woman’s Gotta Have It (love both songs), he might be able to stretch to Rock and Urban, respectively. It’s hard out there for a man without a genre!

I really am looking forward to the CD on March 10th – some of these song titles are quite interesting.

  • JJ123

Well that was a big snoozefest for me, just way too mellow for my taste. Also I think Taylor sounds better on the upbeat stuff where he adds his flavor to it. I wasn’t a huge fan of his when he was on the show but I always appreciated that he got into all of his songs, it made a difference in the sound to me.

  • CookorHubbyHmm

    Boooooooooring.

    Speculation for the song Nineteen

    It could be this one…

    HAMBRIDGE TOM ASCAP 214716980
    NICHOLSON GARY ASCAP 0

Taylor worked with Tom Hambridge and Gary Nicholson…mentioned in interview and blog… here it is done by the writers

  • http://huckleberryfriend.wordpress.com/ huckleberryfriend

Sounds amateurish to me. Lyrics and arrangement are weak. Sax sounds like an afterthought. Too bad.

  • lg

Yeah, I didn’t care for it much either. I do think the overall sound is much better on this album than “Taylor Hicks” though. Oh well, 13 more songs to go! :)

  • oceana

I love it. I don’t listen to AC, but I like a lot of songs on HAC. This is like easy-going soul to me. I like mellow music. It has a nice flow, and gets more passionate as it goes on. It isn’t over-produced like some of his last cd was. This reminds me of his early work because it’s more soulful, simple, and honest.

On the contrary, as much as I love Kelly, I hate her new single. I bought it, but couldn’t even listen to it all the way through, and sent it to the recycle bin. It all depends what our ears are attuned to I guess. I hate that mechanical loud drumbeat. I couldn’t hear anything else but that. I’d like the song if she remade it without the drumbeat. To me, the only thing a loud drumbeat is good for is dancing in a crowded noisy club. I don’t like electronica and hope the rest of her cd isn’t like this.

I hope Taylor’s cd finds an audience. It feels true to who he is. Like slow easy blues. Maybe the lyrics aren’t going to set off any fireworks, but I like the sound of it. Just my two cents.

  • risinggeneration

First timer here…but long time lurker…VERY long time lurker. I don’t know why after reading soooo many post that I finally had to register and say something about Taylor Hicks of all people..

But, I am bummed…although, he was not by any means my favorite of his season, the one thing I liked about him was his “gritty, soulful, in your face, get you moving” vocals.

This song has none of that for me, it just felt flat. I want him to do well, sorta of my little “in your face suits” for not seeing his potential and marketing him as such. But
I don’t see it happening with this song.

Here’s hoping the rest album is more Taylor Hicks!

Cheerio! oh and by the way, I really appreciate all the comments I read on here..MJ has a great bunch of people following this blog!

  • Paula

I love the song more every time I listen to it. I love being able to hear his “voice” and not over powerful instruments.

  • dante

I am on my third listen now and it is sorta growing on me – I love Taylor’s voice but wish this was more earthy – maybe it is the sax?

  • Crazymomelon

Can’t wait to see the video.

  • KTINTN

Thumbs up for the single and looking at the tracks alone, seems this is a more mature Taylor on this album. If I’m reading correctly, he wrote 8 of the 14 songs and the ones he did cover …….. amazing if you look up the lyrics and original artist. Ray Charles being one of them …………

  • Ladybug

I don’t hate it, but don’t love it either. His early works just caught me right away, so I know the Taylor music I like.

Hoping the album has more winners than losers. This song is not a loser by any means, but not a strong first entry.

  • SpenserJ

To me, the only thing a loud drumbeat is good for is dancing in a crowded noisy club.

I’ve found that they’re also kind of good for cleaning the house :)

    And.. welcome risinggeneration.

  • thesheriff

My opinion is that 99.9% of his fanbase during his season was because of his early stuff. Obvious to me in fact. Anyway-this is a vast improvement on the post IDOL cd Crap with the exception of The Right Place, maybe. But yeah- it’s not rocket science that this is not early workish.

    I don’t hate it.

  • Niall

Eh, hopefully he has some more contemporary type tunes on the cd. WRIR is just warmed over late 80′s AC ala whatever it was Clay Aiken released a few months ago. I’ll still give the whole album a listen but I’m not into this first single at. all.

  • poporange

Well I also like the songs from “EArly Works” cd . I thought single had a nice sound to it and overall was just allright. I read somewhere the cd is a variety of songs so I will guess I will wait for more about the other songs on the cd.

  • LadyBeBop

Can’t listen to it right now…my DH is watching a Star Trek rerun on cable, and I can’t disturb him. :wallbash_tb:

But in Taylor news…he’s in my hometown, Cincinnati right now. :clap_tb: He’s appearing on the FOX affiliate’s morning news tomorrow morning. I’m tempted to tape all four hours (5-9 AM)…however, I don’t think he’ll be on at 5 AM. I’m thinking more like 8:45.

I’ll DVR it, but I don’t know how to post videos. Hopefully, one of my fellow Tri-State Soul Patrollers will put up a video somewhere.

  • Glamour

I don’t like it. Very boring!

  • hoodathunk

I do like it a lot. The vocals on this are quite good. I think the CD will have a little something to please everyone. I personally enjoy Taylor singing all types of songs.
“Seven Mile Breakdown” is a song his friend wrote and it’s definitely southern rock. “Woman’s Got to Have It” is vintage soul, and “Nineteen” will be country if it is the Tom Handbridge (sp?) song everyone thinks it is.
He can hop genres all he likes for all I care, I just enjoy his distinctive voice.

  • Little Boy Blue

I’m writing this as a Taylor Hicks fan. But (to quote Randy Jackson ) — keeping it real — Taylor will be lucky to sell 300,000 for this album ( and that’s my most optimistic guestimate ).

The Soul Patrol will have to be on absolute fire for him to even hit Gold this time. It’s been 2 years since the first album and this time, he does not even have the American Idol tailwinds or the promos to support him. This, plus the fact that Adult Contemporary statistically does not sell that much any longer (in fact CD sales in general are dropping) will prove my point.

I’ll always be a fan, but I’m afraid we Soul Patrolers who helped him win by dialing our hands till they got calouses aren’t as potent in number as we thought we were.

Also, just like his first album, I am not certain that this single he chose out of the many songs in his album is the right one for airplay…

When his first album came out, there was uncertainty as to which song would be the single to choose for airplay. First, it was thought it would be the RUNAROUND, then after a while, it became apparent that his fans decided it should be JUST TO FEEL THAT WAY because most of them thought it was the most radio friendly ( heck, there was a survey in Grey Charles’ website for this). Well, it had minor airplay on AC radio and then quickly faded. A few weeks later, Taylor’s team decided that HEAVEN KNOWS would probably be more radio friendly. It met the same fate as JTFTW. I was personally most partial to THE RIGHT PLACE as I thought that song defines who Taylor really should be.

I have a very strong feeling that WHAT’s RIGHT IS RIGHT will meet the same fate as those 2 other singles.

In the 21st century, Taylor Hicks’ throwback style of music just won’t get top 40 airplay anywhere. That’s just the reality. In fact, Taylor himself realizes that if the Soul Patrol becomes as strong as Jimmy Buffet’s ParrotHeads, he will have a great career. I think that’s where he’s headed career-wise. Which isn’t a bad thing IMHO.

  • cheese

It gets a thumbs down from me. I can’t get past the instrumentation – it sounds like muzak. I’d sort of like a whole album of stuff like the original “Hell of a Day.” I do love Taylor’s voice, but not enough to want to listen to this particular song. I’ll still check out the album.

  • blueisyou

This reminds me way too much of elevator music.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Hmm. I don’t like the production. Or perhaps it’s the instrumentation (as someone else said). I didn’t care for it at all.

  • abbysee

I finally got a chance to hear it. Yay me! Although I too am and Early Works kinda girl, I actually like this. I love the hook, it’s catchy. I love the sax as well. Not bad at all. This is something that isn’t much of a departure for him, imho.

Just as I hope that Kelly’s My December is revisited, I hope Taylor revisits The Right Place. I certainly would have preferred if he took a few hits, at least he could say he had put his best foot forward. That was it for me.

  • JudyOhio

It seems he is so perfectly pronouncing every single word in the versus, like he’s trying too hard, dunno. It’s an okay song, but doesn’t bowl me over. I’ll probably buy the album. The title “Yes We Can” definitely caught my eye. If that IS a political song, it could be big. If, on the otherhand, it’s about a relationship, you know, like yes we can make it or something, then it would seem like an opportunistic title (just my opinion of course)

  • risinggeneration

SpenserJ, thanks for the welcome. I hope to give more insightful comments in the future, but we will see, I tend to be slow at these things. :=P

Cheerio, have a good evening, morning, afternoon..whenever you get this..

  • davidlove

Oh dear, I’m afraid I don’t like it. Devoted Taylor fan here (despite my screenname), loved his AI work, Early Works, AND I actually liked his post-AI CD (esp. Right Place and Heaven Knows). Sadly, I feel he’s not hitting his potential with WRIR. And his voice sounds a little “off” to me – not as strong and steady.

I won’t hang my head too low until I hear the rest of the album – hoping for some soulful Taylor passion to come through. I am planning on buying the album regardless.

I, too, wish they’d get a clue and revisit The Right Place. Fits him to a tee.

  • JJ

I listened to the song a few times, and it is still just OK. I don’t hate it, I don’t love it either. It is at least a song I can use to calm my kids down. So, now I have Jack Johnson and this TH song. It may sell some but it is not a song that grabs you. Let’s hope the rest of the CD is better. However, don’t they normally release the best song? That is not a good sign.

Also, he seemed a bit flat in spots.

I have to agree with someone earlier. I could not get through Kelly Clarkson’s new song. IT was awful.

  • daisy

very meh to me, the lyrics seem very weak, I did like the vocal, but the overall song is rather forgettable.
AC seems like the right place for taylor

  • cochem

Taylor was on FOX19 this AM http://www.fox19.com/Global/category.asp?C=141803&nav=menu63_2_3 and he mentions “Yes We Can” as the politcal song written by Allan Toussaint…Taylor said in 1982, a friend of his who is a wonderful songwriter had Willie Weeks, Ivan Neville, Steve Cropper, John Hyatt, Delbert McClinton, a big list of a-list musicians come in and sing Yes we can….He is going to add his vocals to this..

  • maggiemay

good lord those lyrics are bad. :flush_tb:

    his voice sounds good

  • jpfan

Idol Chatter has some interesting info on the album. Including the news that Elliott Yamin laid down some backing tracks on one of the songs.

    http://blogs.usatoday.com/idolchatter/

  • lg

Elliott backing Taylor on the Bobby Womack song…DAMN!!! Thanks jpfan. Can’t wait to hear this one!

  • oceana

It’s all right with me if Taylor doesn’t sell a million, I just hope he finds an audience big enough to keep him afloat so he can keep making music. I’ve liked a lot of indie artists who aren’t sometimes majorly successful for years, if ever. I hope the rest of the cd is decent and that he does all right. I guess I’m easy when it comes to Taylor as I seem to like just about everything he does.

  • Niall

If he’s doing it all himself and didn’t overpay for musicians and help with production, he probably can make a nice stack of cash with 50,000 in sales. Over the next year that is probably doable. I wouldn’t expect him to sell much more than that but if he does then good for him. He shouldn’t have trouble making enough to fund future cds.

  • yummystars

Wow, I think it sounds great. Very old school, like the Staple Singers, the Impressions, stuff like that. And very much what I was hoping from the first post-AI album, which I was sadly not nuts about. What I liked about Taylor Hicks when I first heard him on the show was that old top-40s vibe, something missing in today’s market. I mean, there is definitely room for this old school sweet soul sound that I hear in this song. In fact, I am thinking this album is gonna do well and gain him some new fans. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mean the album is gonna do as well as something in the rock or country genre. I just think it will get a warm critical reception and have respectable sales. I think there will be good word of mouth on this one. Plus, he made a video, right? That’s great.

I really don’t like the picture, though, and hope it’s just for the song and not the whole album. Instead of something artsy and casual, it looks photoshopped, stiff, phony. Too bad.

  • Grammie Kari

Elliott backing Taylor on the Bobby Womack songà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦DAMN!!! Thanks jpfan. Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wait to hear this one!

Since Bobby Womack was just selected for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the timing is just about right. I wish nothing but the best for Taylor, and Elliott as well!
