Taylor Hicks stopped by the CBS 2 studios in Chicago yesterday to perform “Hold On To Your Love” from his Early Works album.

This is absolutely on of my favorite Taylor Hicks songs, so you know…YAY!

Taylor is cast as the Teen Angel in the national touring company of Grease. The tour is in Chicago for a two-week run. Next Saturday, he’ll perform a gig at Martyrs. Taylor is pretty awesome live–check it out if you can.

I’m so happy to see news about Taylor again! He makes me smile when I watch him. He is awesome live.

  • JudyOhio

Awwww, it’s so good to see him so upbeat. I’ve gotten upset with him at times (his decisions/projections), but I’m always pulling for him. Of course, I’ve also been upset with AI, the press, and radio play in regards to TH. I think he’s working hard towards his goals and I hope he attains them.

  • abbysee

I love this, I love Early Works, I love Taylor. He makes me smile, and I derive so much joy from seeing him perform. He is so unique. He’s so damn cute too, lol.

Recenty, my husband and I were watching an Amy Winehouse concert on cable. It was awful. She was an absolute mess. My husband said “You know, she is the opposite of Taylor Hicks.” I asked what he meant by that, and he said “Amy Winehouse’s CDs are fantastic, and her live performance is awful. Taylor’s CD was just so-so, but he’s fantastic in concert.”

I thought that pretty much sums up how he won, and why his CD got no airplay. I’m hoping that will be resolved on the next CD. Love this little video. I don’t understand how anyone can play guitar & harmonica at the same time.

  • gingerly

Wow, I didn’t watch season 5. I really have no strong feelings about any of them. I just found this performance to be a mess. Most of my musical obsessions have a harmonica chastity belt so I liked that he does too, but for me, this performance started before I was ready for it and by the time I was ready, there were about 3 notes left. Sorry, I just don’t get it. It was fast, furious and I just couldn’t jump in.

  • momo

Thanks for posting this MJ! I just love him simply singing and playing a guitar-no gimmicks. What a fine performance. Glad he’s able to play some of his old stuff too.

  • YankeeFan08

Sorry, this is one hot mess! It sounds like he’s making it up as he goes along. I don’t get Taylor, never did.

  • cochem

“Sorry, this is one hot mess! It sounds like heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s making it up as he goes along.”

That is our Taylor and WHY we love him so much…here is a quote from Taylor “sometimes I forget the hell out of some lyrics”
    TH on Jonesy’s Jukebox-052207

Thanks MJ for putting video up….a correction though he is in Chicago 2 weeks (until 011809) and his Martyrs appearance is Saturday 011709…

  • poporange

    Hi MOMO.

Review-It also took me a moment to catch up with the fast pace of the song and I thought it was allright overall.
Gingerly- I like his song”The Fall” better the pace is slower but do not know if you will like it or already have checked it out.(mjs blog)

  • hicksaholic

You either get him or you don’t! I love Taylor! Each song is never sung the same(in this case, not even the lyrics) but for some reason he pulls me in. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Mj his appearance at Martyr’s is January 17th.

  • hicksaholic

I will agree that he started the song too quickly but I assumed that was because the newscaster took too long talking to him and he was being prompted to hurry. It could have driven the pace of the song to some degree also.

  • MN Sue

One of the best things about Taylor is you never know what version you’re going to get. This was Taylor’s fit the time allotment/creative lyric version. The harp makes it a keeper IMO. mj knows full well what Taylor can do with this self penned song. Her 11:00 Cohassett concert video from ’07 ranks as one of my most watched and cherished Taylor videos.

Peeps, y’all know the rules by now. I just deleted a post, so just a general reminder to disagree without criticizing your fellow posters. I’ll be editing and deleting posts that don’t follow the guidelines.

  • Lisa

I don’t care for this version of HOTYL. LOL at SP tho.

  • hicksaholic

I should have said you either like him or you don’t or I guess you could take him or leave him. I didn’t mean to imply that Taylor fans have a better concept of what qualifies as good music. If anything maybe less so because although I love Taylor’s voice it certainly is not perfect in fact it is probably not as good technically as a lot of singers. But something about his voice pulls me in and apparently it does some others too. But for others they see him as nothing special at all.

  • hicksaholic

I am totally confused Did I say something wrong? If so please delete with my apologies.

You’re right, hicksaholic. That is precisely why I love his voice. His voice has so many sounds and so many moods, I just love listening to it. It is so much fun to hear him again as he makes his way across the country. His new music can’t come soon enough!

Yeah, I get that now. I also missed that the OP said he didn’t get him, and you were responding.

    So, nevermind.

No you’re fine. No worries. I deleted a post, and the part about not criticizing posters was a general reminder for everyone.

Good I will remove myself from the corner!

  • cat

I just can’t help smiling at Taylor.

The way he can’t sit still, the way he can never do a song the same way twice.

I don’t see him *ever* being a successful recording artist, he’s just to quirky and unpredictable…not to mention being totally unwilling to play nice with corporate :D . I love him anyway.

  • hicksluvbug

Love all the attention Taylor is getting in Chicago! He is suppose to be on WGN AM Radio Sunday morning at 10:15 (CST). Interview with Dean Richards from WGN. He also interviewed him on WGN TV Tuesday (1/6). Loved the performance especially with the dual instruments! He appeared to know that he had only so much time and tried to fit the song into that time frame. Buddy Guy was on WGN Wednesday and they cut his song off. Better a little fast than being cut off.

  • JudyOhio

I’m not too fond of his early works, nor was I particularly thrilled with his first cd “Taylor Hicks”. I did like The Right Place. I like his looks (lol, does that count?). I also think I’d love to see him live, as the videos all show him as one heck of a performer on stage. I’m still waiting for the You Are So Beautiful voice and style of Taylor to come out. I really like how his voice sounded on AI5. Play That Funky Music White Boy, Taking It To The Streets, The Ghetto, etc. So, I KNOW he’s got all that in him and I’d like to hear his voice sounding like it did back then again.

  • hicksaholic

    Judy
If you get the chance go see him live. He really is worth the price of admission(whatever it is) to see him perform.

  • kathrynTX

Awwww! I loved Taylor on AI and I was rather stunned that he actually WON. Like Cook, Taylor is not the “typical” AI pop singer or singer with a big, blowin’ voice. Or big blowin’ pop singer. He’s more of an artist-y type singer-songerwriter guy. And I’m so glad you posted this and I watched it!

I think I would really like him live. Here, I think perhaps he was rushed into starting and finishing the song because his time was run down by the rest of the show. Perhaps? Nevertheless, I like this song and I like his singing and his performance. I think he wanted to get up and dance too! He could dance, play the guitar, play the harmonica, AND sing! What a nut.

May watch for any live Taylor coming my way! And check out the new album as well. Thanks, mj!

  • calimari

If you are curious about seeing him live & a show isn’t coming near you, check out the Live Concert DVD he’s releasing this March – Whomp at the Warfield. I saw it on cable & it was a great show – really reminded me of the shows I saw.

  • Whomp

Love HOTYL. Fascinates me how he plays both instruments at once. Too bad about TeeVee timing. Yes— Live is the best way to experience the woo of Taylor. So glad to see him and all of the upcoming appearances and releases. I’m even going to return to watching Idol this year. He is supposed to be on in March.

  • dancingqueen

This is my favorite Taylor song(so far), and, I agree that mj’s Cohassett vid of it is kicka**! But, I liked this version, too. With Taylor, I never know what I’m going to get, which is one of the reasons I enjoy him. There are quite a few idol peeps I like, but, Taylor’s live performances are the only ones I’ll travel out-of-state to see.

  • chewsday

    JudyOhio:

I don’t think Taylor will ever be what you seem to want him to be. The AI Taylor isn’t the REAL Taylor as fans have come to know him. He did what he had to do to win Idol. But the pre-Idol Taylor – which drove many fans to vote like mad for him – and post-Idol Taylor aren’t the same thing as the AI Taylor. Yes, his voice on some of those AI songs is fabulous. But his voice on other songs he does is fabulous, too. I’m afraid that those who are looking for the YASB and Something Taylor might never get what they want from the post-AI man.

Maybe it’s the price he has to pay for being able to inhabit the two worlds, so to speak.

This isn’t my favorite version of HOTYL, but it made me smile. Taylor is a free bird with his music. Reports are that he is ill and he himself has said that he is tired, both conditions which could have affected the performance. Still, it’s vintage Taylor, doing it his way and never the same way. I love it!

  • Ladybug

Awww! Thanks for posting that, MJ. Taylor is by no means for everyone, be he sure ’nuff is for me. He always puts a smile on my face.

He was ripping through that song, but I do think his time was limited.

I am a BIG fan of his early stuff. Hoping his new album taps into that vibe.

  • Crazymomelon

Love this song – my favorite Taylor original. Love the jazzy Latin feel and what he does with his voice on it – uses it more as an instrument than a lyrics-delivery device.

  • lg

That really was rushed and hurried, like so many other times I’ve heard Taylor post Idol. But dayum, the harp/guitar jam was hott.

JudyOhio, I concur. I like very little pre-Idol Taylor and prefer the AI Taylor. Hated the cheaply produced freshman CD, though he did what he could with it. I just want to see that intense focus that he so masterfully displayed on the show. I want the raw, gutsy, foot-stompin’, bluesy AI Taylor. We know he’s a terrific bandleader and has undeniable charisma. I’m not giving up just yet.

  • gingerly

Thanks, poporange :) I liked the version of The Fall I saw on youtube much better than this.

I’m a bit surprised at all the amazement of him playing harmonica and guitar at the same time. This is standard operating procedure for most of the musicians I go to see. Now, I need to say here that I don’t go to any pop shows, nor even many rock shows anymore. Most of who I see are classified as alt-country or americana. The harmonica/guitar is the norm for this genre.

  • hicksaholic

    gingerly
if Taylor comes near you go see him live. I have family and friends that are not Taylor fans and once they see him live not one has said he wasn’t great.

  • hoodathunk

He played a little loosey-goosey with his own lyrics there, but wow the simultaneous guitar and harmonica-that was good.

  • bluegreen

I liked this performance. I always liked this song a lot. And I even liked his cavalier attitude with the lyrics. Good old inarticulate Taylor. I still love his voice.

It seems this could have been any bar performance in the pre-Idol days, and that gives me a kick. I don’t know what’s in his head these days, but he just seems happier and more natural. I do think that whatever happens in his career, he is in a good place and at peace with himself and his music, and that is nice to see. Sudden fame can be a wild ride, at least that’s what it looks like from the outside, so it’s nice to see somebody land on their feet after some bumpy patches.

For the record, I liked the recent snippet of his new song too and think this upcoming album will be something I can get into.

  • cheese

I don’t think Taylor has any idea what the lyrics to this song are. I’ve never heard him sing anything approaching the lyrics on the recorded version. I still like the song. And I agree that Taylor seems more natural in the latest round of interviews. He’s not doing that lean thing and shouting Soul Patrol at me, which is a very good start towards getting me interested again.

    Like Chewsday said earlier,

With Taylor, I never know what Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m going to get, which is one of the reasons I enjoy him. There are quite a few idol peeps I like, but, Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s live performances are the only ones Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll travel out-of-state to see.

Taylor is the ONLY Idol that I will travel out-of-state to attend a show…

Despite the fact that I live in Fairfield County, CT, I consider myself a NYer, by virtue of the fact that I live so close to NY…
I mean, Hartford, the capital of CT, considers my part of CT as part of NYS… NYS, on the otherhand, KNOWS that my part of CT, truly IS part of CT, and as a consequence, it seems that NOTHING ever gets done in my part of CT…

For me, to go to NYC is no big whoop, as it is less than 90 minutes away…
The fact that I went to see Taylor twice in CT (both at opposite ends of CT from where I live), and MA twice (Cohasset & the Big “E”) is HUGE for me…

I cannot wait for Taylor’s new album, and his tour (whenever that will be) to promote it…

I saw Taylor 5 times for “Taylor Hicks” and 4 times for “Grease“…
May “The Distance” bear similar good fortune for me…
I hope to take my Dad to go see Taylor again on tour for “The Distance…”
I am hoping to take my Aunt to see Taylor on tour also, as she has only seen him on Broadway in “Grease,” so I want her to to experience Taylor as TAYLOR…

  • calimari

Gingerly, I realize that playing harmonica & guitar simulataneously is common. It’s just that, for completely non-musical me, that I’ve always been astounded that the performer, be it Dylan, Lennon, or Hicks or blues guy on the corner can do it. My attempts to play an instrument have required total concentration, so doing 2 different ones at once, even though harp is sort of just “breathing”, is just an impossibility.

  • Easy

Dude never fails to make me laugh. But in a good way.

Yeah, he’s great live. I’m not saying he’s going to turn you from a hater to a fan, but if you like anything about him at all, see him live. You’ll like him more.
