Taylor Hicks tells the crew at Providence’s PRO FM 92 that his new album, due to drop 2/10, will be called The Distance and will have a “James Taylor and Van Morrison” type of vibe. Goodbye Modern Whomp? Not a moment too soon! I’m now officially kinda excited for the record to drop.

The first single is scheduled to be available on iTunes Jan. 6th.

Taylor is in Providence, RI right now, playing the Teen Angel in the touring company of Grease.

I’m excited too. The Distance. I like it.

  • sonyab

MJ you don’t like modern womp? Aww that’s to bad. I love it! :)

  • davidlove

Taylor’s looking and sounding great. He was so defined as a soul artist on AI, I was baffled by radio chic’s statement that he was not defined as an artist. Maybe the Modern Whomp confused everyone, correct MJ? I believe his live performing has not strayed from his soul roots, always inflecting his soulful, passionate tones into his songs – even those from his post-AI album. I await to see what comes forth on his independent album.

  • baxter

Well the title of the album sure is telling if you ask me. Interested to here what this album sounds like.

  • dancingqueen

Can’t wait, but, will have to.

The title is perfect – he’s distanced himself from some and plans to go the distance with a long lasting entertainment career. The one line clip we’ve heard has a James Taylor vibe to it.

A fan who spoke to him after the Grease performance last night, was told there will be a video for the first single (someone check to see if hell froze over), but, no reveal on the title of the song.

  • neonorange

You can also hear a snippet of one of the songs in this interview on Fox

  • abbysee

was told there will be a video for the first single (someone check to see if hell froze over)

Checking now, lol! The title is quite appropriate. It’s very Taylor.

  • calimari

It seems like things are being handled much better for Taylor this time around. He’s getting plenty of good press/name out there with this Grease thing, he’s had time to put out the kind of music he wants, there will actually be a single released with the album – imagine that! And maybe a video? Who ever heard of an Idol winner getting a video AND a single? Seems his PR folks are on the ball. I’m hoping the music is more to his roots as he’s indicated. If so, it will be very good. Airplay? No idea. But if the music is good, I’m all over it.

  • Easy

It won’t get radio play. People are too close minded. But it will be good music. Just like everything he’s ever released.

Bo Bice has the same problem. His new album is very good yet nobody listens.

I very much look forward to this. I look forward to Jason Castro’s release whenever that might be too.

Sales numbers will never tell me what is and what isn’t good music.

  • Ladybug

I am wishing Taylor the best on this. I absolutely do not expect him to sell many albums, or even downloads, but I am over expecting that from him.

The description of the album sounds promising. Closer to Under the Radar, which is what a am hoping for.

Sales numbers will never tell me what is and what isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t good music.

Word! My music collection would be pitiful indeed if all I bought were the hyped best-sellers.

Taylor will always be my favorite Idol, ever, from that show, and the fact that everyone involved in Idol seems to hate him so intensely makes me only like him more intensely.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Taylor’s my favorite too, Ladybug. I’m very excited about this upcoming cd, no matter how many it sells. I’d like it to do fairly well for him, but I’ll be happy if it just does well enough to allow him to continue making music. He seems to have a great shot at longevity even if he isn’t a top-seller.

One of the things that I liked about Taylor the most, outside of his voice, was his knowledge of and reverence for music that came before him. Even though their styles vary, it is one of the things that attracted me with Cookie too. It says a lot to me when someone takes the time to learn about what they claim their passion is.

  • Glamour

Thank you so much for this news. I also was not a fan of Modern Whomp. I could not figure out what it was and thought his post-Idol CD was rather lame.

I think if the single is good and he does a video, there is a good chance it will get played by radio. The single will need a push and, hopefully, an industry insider will be on Taylor’s side and gives him much needed support to further his talent and career – something that was sorely lacking with Arista.

As far as the genre goes, actually soul/folk, pop/rock is making a comeback. Look at Jason Mraz, Ray LaMontagne, Colbie Caillat and Ben Folds. Hopefully, this is the direction he’s going in.

Can’t wait to hear it. It’ll be interesting.

  • hicksaholic

God it’s great to see a headline for Taylor!!! I am hopeful radio will play it but I won’t be as optimistic as I was before the first release. I still think he made some people high up very mad and so received little support(not that necessarily that was the only reason for his lack of radio play) I really hope it is different this time. Taylor is so talented and deserves another shot at radio play. But whatever, I absolutely love his voice and seeing him perform live so I will be happy as long as he keeps singing.

  • dante

Glad to see Taylor looking so happy! I will be interested to see what this second CD sounds like. I do know that I would go see him live if he comes close around – that is where he shines the most.

  • Paula

He also told somebody the other night in Providence that Grease will be touring the south in the summer including Atlanta in August. Maybe that means another Smith’s Olde Bar!

  • http://www.a-caryling.blogspot.com caryl

Hold on there! This is HUGE! Paula, he said the show is touring the south in the summer??!!! Maybe finally, he’ll come to Houston. I’m not interested in Grease, but I’ll go to one of those club gigs if he books one nearby. Can I quote you on my blog?

  • JOJOSIE

I think this is one of Taylor’s better interviews. He seems relaxed, happy and less hesitant in what he’s saying. He really looks good, like really, really good.
I’m a big Taylor fan and I’m excited about the cd altho I liked his post Idol cd just fine. I can hardly wait. I pre-ordered his dvd and will pre-order the record as soon as it shows up on Amazon. i’m excited………..

  • bluegreen

I agree, Jojosie. I don’t keep up too much with any of the Idols, it’s more like I just check out their CDs (looking forward to Jason Castro, sweet and dreamy kiddo), but I am so pleased to see this interview with TH. He looks natural and relaxed and happy. What a nice surprise! Esp. after all those interviews where he acted so guarded or pompous or weird or just off, like someone in the witness protection program instead of just enjoying his career.

It seems to me like this will be an album that sounds like Taylor Hicks full force, all bluesy and charming and authentic and uncomplicated in the best sense, something as a fan I can really get into. Just happy for me and all the other fans who were hoping for better things, realer things, for him once the Idol hoopla died down.

Maybe he saw a psychiatrist, maybe it was the air in Nice, maybe he’s eating good food, but whatever it is, I am glad someone I kinda thought of as a friend in a way is back and bringing good music with him.

  • davidlove

Love the clips of Tay on harp and guitar!

  • Grammie Kari

This sounds like good news for Taylor and the type of music I love to listen to. I wish Taylor the best with this release.

I also look forward to seeing what Jason is recording!

  • Paula

I got the information from the boogieboard. Now it’s been corrected to say that Bill Will (Taylor’s friend) told her that Taylor would be coming to Atlanta with Grease in August.

Also, there will be a music video.

  • thedingoateyobaby

OK, I LOVE the title. Its just very cool. The Distance. Yes, very nice.

    >>Goodbye Modern Whomp? Not a moment too soon! Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m now officially kinda excited for the record to drop. >>

Me to MJ, I hope the words “modern whomp” never, ever roll off his tongue again. I hated it.

At the risk of setting myself up for a huge let down…again……Im excited. Van Morrison and James Taylor? Oh please, I’ve already died and gone to music heaven. Taylor, I’ll kick your ass if you dont deliver you hear me? I’ll shove this bunch of carrots so far up your …….oh, sorry, I got carried away.

The Distance, nodding head, verrrrrrrry nice.

  • Lisa

Put something on there comparable to the outstanding *Georgia* and I’ll buy it. Put out another whomp and I will buy those carrots for Dingo to put….. Fool me once…..

I am looking forward to it NOT being modern whomp, but truly great soul music. Hopefully?????

  • Crazymomelon

I don’t want to bum anyone out, but I think Taylor’s new label is called “Modern Whomp Records”. So, y’all may have to deal with that, even if you like The Distance.

    http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1245835/artist2market_its_all_about_the_artist.html?cat=33

I, for one, am really excited to hear this new music, regardless of the Modern Whomp moniker. Love what I’m hearing so far!

  • http://myspace.com/morganmadelynne marymagdalene

Considering that Taylor’s record label is called “Modern Whomp Records” it will not completely disappear, but probably will not use the phrase to describe his music anymore…

But, like it or not, I think “Modern Whomp” is here to stay… :ponder_tb:

  • spanishfan

I love Taylor and am waiting for his new music. To me he is the epitome of an artist. I flew over from Spain to see him live and I was not disappointed. There have been only 3 American Idols who have captured my heart and that is two males, David Cook and Taylor Hicks and one female, Diana DeGarmo. That has not changed over 7 seasons. Only 3 have been my absolute favourites. I will always be there for them.

  • oceana

It seems to me like this will be an album that sounds like Taylor Hicks full force, all bluesy and charming and authentic and uncomplicated in the best sense,

That’s a great description. I hope for the same, and can’t wait to hear it.

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

Sounds much more promising than modern whomp. I have high hopes!

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to bum anyone out, but I think Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new label is called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Modern Whomp Recordsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . So, yà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢all may have to deal with that, even if you like The Distance.

I couldn’t care less what he calls his record label.

What he was describing as “Modern Whomp”–his post-Idol album. I didn’t care for that so much. That was my point.
