The Oscars saw big gains this year. The show  grew its overall audience for the 2nd straight year (+3%) and surged 11% in Adults 18-49 (13.0 rating vs. 11.7 rating) to its best numbers since 2010. Also, it’s 18-34 rating saw a 20% gain, probably thanks to the presence of host, Seth MacFarlane.  Over 40 million tuned in to watch the Oscars last night. The Red Carpet pre-show numbers were not too shabby either.  More HERE.

Okay, I’ll weigh in again; we thought Seth was a really great host!  And we are all over 40 and younger than 60. (I had never heard of Seth.  Most in our group knew who he was and knew what sort of humour to expect; I did not.)

Some of his jokes were bad, a few were clearly in poor taste, but overall he was funny!  He sang, danced, and as indigo said, I was entertained.  So were the other 9 people who watched the show with me.

I would love to see him host next year.

I think the Oscars were just more relevant this year, not particularly because the audience was more youthful:  more of us saw the movies and had an opinion.  If there are good movies with good reviews out, the public goes.  What an idea!

I liked Seth and I’m over 40. And I knew he could sing when I saw him host SNL. I thought some of his jokes were a little off but most he hit out of the park. Even my sister (who’s 40) and hates Family Guy thought he did a really good job. :D

FTR, I didn’t say the Oscars were more relevant “because the audience was more youthful”. My comment stated that the Oscars seemed more relevant this year “to those who are youthful”. I was speaking for myself and the majority of my friends on facebook and my twitter feed.

The first part of my comment was in reference to the 20% rating gain in the 18-34 demographic. While I’m sure the choice of host played a part in that increase, the other factors that probably played a part were the well-known movies and actresses and actors nominees that were a part of that particular demographic’s entertainment culture over the last year.
