Wow, it must really be early. Am I the first one to post? No way! Now I’m off to bed since I haven’t been to bed yet – I’ve been too busy chasing tornadoes in western Oklahoma and Kansas. My thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by the storms yesterday and today. Unfortunately more tornadoes are predicted for later today.

Idol thoughts: I’m actually looking forward to Barry this week. My first concert was in 1976 at the age of 8 – front row seats at a BeeGees concert. I’ll have to think about what I’d like for the Idols to sing this week. However, I’m sad to see Phil gone. The guy had really started to grow on me. I wasn’t exactly crazy over Blake’s version of YGLABN and his whole “Zac Efron” appearance, but I’m still a fan. Lakisha still bores me and I’m totally indifferent to Jordin. Melinda is really good – maybe too good. I do like the whole “Tina Turner” vibe. At this point I’m pulling for a Blake and Melinda final.

Now I’m off to bed for a few hours sleep before the storm chasing begins again. Have a great day everyone!

Did all of you check out and vote for the Idol coronation tunes?

I struggled just to finish listening to all 20. I was generous to give some of them 3′s.

Here are my conclusions:

“This Is My Now,” one of the better entries, really fits Melinda lyrically. She could really bring the best out of this song.

“If You Ask Me To” would fit Phil Stacey lyrically; “Love Me till the Lonelyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Gone” would fit his style.

“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m Going to Be Me” would fit Blake’s style. I could see him doing cool things with it. “Secrets and Lies” (the CASTING CROWNS one) would also be suitable for him.

Overall, “Love Me till the Lonelyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Gone,” “Secrets and Lies,” “Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m Going to Be Me” are the better songs of the bunch but they don’t fit the theme…

Good morning everyone. Lisa B posted some links at the end of yesterday’s thread. The NYTimes article posted at the bottom of page four about the release of the DVD of the show “WKRP in Cincinnati”, was interesting in that it explains the reason that we’ll probably never see the release of full seasons of American Idol on DVD. They redid the soundtrack for WKRP, removing all of the actual songs, replacing them with generic music because the cost of licensing the music was prohibitive. So now, when Johnny Fever spins “Heart of Glass”, by Blondie, you get generic music.

primeminister, yes, I voted. I thought that most of them were beyond awful. The only one I rated above a 5 was “I Saw Stars” (the one that sounded like it was being sung by Adam Duritz). Everything else was a travesty, IMO.

I’m more of a DC girl than a Marvel girl myself (luuurve Superman I, II, Superman Returns and Tim Burton’s Batman), but I did enjoy the X-Men movies. Do you recommend Spidey?

Spidey 1 and 2 are excellent films. If you enjoy superhero type stuff, you will love them.

I listened and voted for the songs. I thought most of them were just “meh” – totally forgettable and generic, a few were absolute dreck and two or three I might listen to again depending on the arrangement.

The ones I “liked” the best seem to be least appropriate for coronation songs, but I wonder if they will end up on someone’s debut album.

I am BOTH a DC and Marvel fan. Spiderman is to me one of the BEST movie series on Super heroes ever made. Action thrills do not sacrifice character development.

Plus, the film celebrates old fashion virtues like courage, kindness, responsibility and forgiveness.

Also, ordinary citizens come out as heroes in these films as well ( which is a subtle celeberation of the heroes of 911 ).

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE SPIDERMAN SERIES.

The only thing that’s missing is JTFTW as background music when they show Peter Parker and MaryJane together.

I am totally not into any superhero type movies but being as I have 2 sons I have had to adjust my tastes a little. I have seen both Spiderman 1 & 2 multiple times and enjoyed both and am actually looking forward to seeing #3.

Okay, y’all have convinced me, I will definitely go see the new Spidey and rent the old ones

Supes and Bats are my two favorite superheroes, but for very different reasons. I love the fact that Superman enjoys his powers, selflessly using them to help people. He doesn’t really mope around; he’s just a damn good guy. (One of my favorite things about the newest Superman movie was when he heard Lois tell her fiance that she never loved Superman. He was hurt by that, but what was his solution? Go be proactive and help some people! Not moping around or being angsty.) I do think Singer sacrificed some character development for “hey, let’s watch Superman stop a plane!”, but it was still a good movie.

But I do love Batman for the darkness and angst. I think the two characters are a great contrast to each other.

Now, I’m not too familiar with Spidey. On the spectrum of motivation, where 1 is “tortured, angsty superhero” and 10 is “happy, altruistic superhero,” where does he fall?

By the way, I saw “Fracture” a few nights ago. It was pretty good. Figuring out how the prosecutor is gonna get the guy becomes kind of obvious about 3/4 of the way through, but I would still recommend it.

Good morning (again)

I missed out on Spidey 3 because my son inconveniently came down with a bad case of diarrhea (You know, as opposed to a good case.) I heard this film’s not as good as the first two, but I still want to see it. I like Tobey Maguire from his earlier films, and Sam Raimi (director) has done some excellent work. He directed a wonderful film called A Simple Plan. Highly recommended if you like drama, suspense, and O. Henry-type endings.

Lots of buzz at the etrain this morning. Elliott performed at 2 NASCAR events here in Richmond this weekend – SSB Friday night (did great!) and God Bless America yesterday – haven’t seen that one yet. Elliott is like the little engine that could – gradually creeping up the top 40 and now is at #29. Again I say, not too shabby for an indie act! It’s also really exciting that he’s going to be on AI…. to think one year ago he was getting the boot and look how far he’s come!

I want a Melinda/Blake finale because I’m over Jordin. Fake criers get on my nerves. Lakisha just isn’t doing it for me. I wonder what Bee Gee songs we’ll hear on Tuesday? I hope to at least hear To Love Somebody and How Do You Mend A Broken Heart.

I had a friend get to that point the first three years and get cut every single time. I think she’s a great singer, but she’s a little too mainstream, they seem to go for quirky people on that show more than actual talent sometimes.
As for Spidy3, I heard it sucked, the story line is more about love and friendship then fighting the bad guys. There were too many bad guys in the movie, and Peter turns into Emo Peter throughout the film and dances weird. That’s just what i’ve been hearing, I have a place to watch it online for free, so I might watch it myself soon.

An interesting side note: the cartoons in that tribute video were done by a process called rotoscoping, where live-action models are traced and then animated. Very cutting-edge at the time.

Maybe I’m just an ass but to me, Elliott is an idol who has a CD out. He can be called “indie” but if he came out with a CD as a true “indie” without much fanfare and without an existing fanbase from AI he would be lucky to have sold 20,000 CDs by now.

I would imagine that it is because the journalist hasn’t actually heard the singer him/herself sing after-hours blues on a club stage. So, they are just projecting. They think he might sound good there.

Far from showing bad journalistic integrity, that phrase you are calling out is actually an example of the opposite. The author is not claiming something they do not know for a fact is true because they’ve never witnessed it themselves nor talked to somebody who has. The author is presumably something of an expert on music and is writing a combo factual article/opinion piece. Those are written all the time for musicians/actors/etc.

I don’t view Elliott as indie. I don’t think his situation is any different then Buckys, who’s just signed to a lesser known label. Elliott has a good deal with Sony that the majoirty of Indie artists won’t ever get.

As for the season DVD’s, AI should try to negotiate licencing agreements. Maybe the DVD’s would cost a little more, but I am sure then would sell. Heck AI5 would be an instant sell out. An internet blog could be dedicated to dissecting that season note by note.

I’m sure a lot of the rights holders to these old songs would and have benefited from having them back in circulation.

Radname, the KEYWORD there is RELY. Occasionally singing a song as part of an encore does not sound like he is relying on it. Taylor does have a setlist and one might not be to surprised if the writer go his hands on it and did not see the song as part of his setlist. If the song is not part of a setlist then he is not relying on it..

Maybe you should send the writer an e-mail voicing your annoyance over the incorrect use of that word…I have a feeling writer was more envisioning Taylor’s vocals sounding real good in a atmosphere like that.

I’m going to see Spidy 3 today..YES, finally.. I’ve seen 1 and 2. Did not care for 2. Felt it was an extention of 1. Hoping 3 is much better

Indie = no label… He’s been working his tail off going all over the ocuntry hitting any radio station he can get to to get his song played. Distribution for his CD ahd to be negotiated- he himself was in on the meeting with target when they came to their distribution deal. I think one of the main reasons there are all of those bonus track cds was to cut a deal to get on the shelf (Target has different bonus tracks than Walmart). He’s not sold in every retail outlet. He has to prove himself and I think he’s doing a darn good job at it. I think the only reason the AI performance came to be was that his single Wait for You is now a top 40 hit – especially since the performace announcement came so soon after he hit top 40. I think if his single was just bumping along getting average spins, AI would not have even considered putting him on – jmo. This is all I can say regarding his deal – Nevada is far more knowledgeable than me on this topic for sure. Rest assured though – his deal is not the same as Taylor, Kat, Chris, Kellie or Bucky.

Yesterday, I ventured into Wal-Mart for my monthly trip to pick up various sundries that I only buy there. I also wanted to pick up Kimberley Locke’s CD. Guess what? Not a copy to be had… not in the new releases or on the racks. I asked about it and got a blank stare. This does not bode well for her first week sales if the biggest block store didn’t have a single copy.

My mp3 player is stuffed with Idol music along with 32-count excercise albums that I use when I walk/trot. I always start out with an exercise album and then switch to something else for my cool-down. Lately, I keep returning to Elliott’s album for that part of my regime. Of all the Idol music I have loaded, that’s the one I am playing the most. Just an interesting sidenote!

Not everyone finds talking about season 6 a chore, Sexygirl. Some of us try to bring it up but there’s continually so much talk of Taylor and season 5 that I usually do a quick read and then leave or post on MJ’s great articles.

And so is Elliott. The distribution deal is basically what a record is, you record it and RCA distributes it.

Am actually enjoying season 6. Think the top four are the best of the season and am happy they are there. Really don’t care who wins.

I told myself I wouldn’t vote this year (sprained hand from voting for Taylor) but I actually power voted for Blake.

Kat, I actually buy 32-count exercise CDs to use in my water aerobics classes. They are mixed to consistant beats (130-140 usually for me) and keep me moving! I am trying to convince one of the outlets to put out an all-Idol CD. There are a lot of Idol-related remixes out there already, and those could be used along with some new ones. I don’t have a song playlist (yet).

Anyway, My point of the post was not to compare one season to another but just the naturalness of what one chooses to talk about based on simple observation. It does seem as if it’s easier to start a discussion on any of the past contestants than it is for this current cast of characters. Maybe it’s because, as someone pointed out, we feel more of a connection with some of the past contestants than we do with this group.

It is shaping up to be a Melinda-Blake final, and that’s going to be pretty special. Not just the talent, but how close the final vote is going to be.
So dispite all its short comings, AI6 has been worth it and able to to stand on its own against previous seasons.

And what about this. One of the best, if best sing outs of all time. That AI didn’t dump Richardson early and keep Phil til the end boggles my mind.

Well Taylor finally reaches the sunny warm shores of San Diego County today – The sun is shining brightly for him – not a cloud in the sky – we have cool, clear, mid-70s temperatures and should be a beautiful night for an outdoor boogie woogie with the soulman! wooooooo!

Blake is the last guy standing and that may fuel his fans to vote harder for him just like Kat’s last year but I think in the end it will be a Jordin/Melinda finals. If the judges keep pimping Jordin and the AI audience don’t grow tired of it, she might have a chance.

Honestly, I see this one as a toss-up. Anyone of those guys can leave this week. I think Melinda not making the finale might cause the biggest shockwave..

I think Lakisha will leave this week because I doubt her fanbase will be helped by either Phil or Chris fans. Blake will benefit and maybe Jordin. I wouldn’t be shocked by any of the rest leaving in the top 3 although I do hope Blake will be in the F2.

Bucky also has a show in SD later on as well at the Belly Up Tavern – a small club/bar in the north county. *** makes a stop at the Del Mar fair this summer as well (definitely not going to this one). I’m not a Chris fan so I can’t say for sure, but I suspect Chris’s votes go to Blake.

IMO it is going to be a Blake/Jordin finale. I still say Jordin takes it all, but we’ll see. I have been taping off old episodes and she has had some real klunker performances.

I am really happy for Ricky H. The kid has taken a lot of flack and I hope he succeeds in his dream. Although I most definitely miss the behind the scenes info (whether true or not, and I lean more toward true.)

Okay let me phrase it this way. AI is a show with human beings trying to win a contest. We watch and we either like what we see or we don’t. This season cast seem more like products than human beings who we can connect with and somewhat identify ourselves with. AI is a entertainment show, yes, but it’s the human quality of the contestants that draws us in. Hence those background stories. There does not seem to be much this season. I’ve never paid that much attention to those background stories in the past but I’m now realize that it was those occasional personal stories that made you connect to those contestants and rooted for them outside of them just singing week in and week out.

Case in point Bean, is your passion for Chris based solely on him being a guy standing in front of a mike week in and week out sing.. Nope, I think not.

I enjoy hearing current information about the AI5 idols and since the end of AI6 is fast approaching, I am not surprised at all that we are all wondering which AI5 idols will appear. I am so happy for Elliott!

Taylor is currently on tour and I have enjoyed reading recaps of his performances and I posted 2 myself as it was my first time seeing him live. I have also enjoyed reading about Chris, Elliott, Bucky, Kellie and Ace. This is my only source for Idol news. My understanding is we can discuss anything current on here. I don’t enjoy the fanwars and feel sorry for mj!

I think it is extremely rude in chat or on the blog to swoop in just to make accusations and not contribute to the conversation. I almost left for good after an encounter on chat last week.

It took a while for me to get interested in the current season, but I am really enjoying it now and post much more often about AI6 than I do about previous seasons. I was very sad to see Phil go, but I am looking forward to this week as I think any of them are vulnerable. I am hoping for a Melinda/Blake finale.

Like many people here, I enjoy talking about season 5 more than season 6. It’s a personal preference and I really don’t enjoy the “blah blah blah you haven’t moved on” criticisms, simply because I don’t find this season as engaging as last season. I *like* season six, but yes, compared to season five, it’s boring, and it seems like I can’t post that opinion without getting a harrumphed “well, *I* like S6 and *I* have moved on” from at least one poster.

Yes, I will freely admit that I often stupidly allow myself to get into stupid squabbles that are probably against MJ’s guidelines, but the guidelines do say that we can talk about any of the Idols as long as its current. So I don’t see how discussing Taylor’s tour, or Katharine’s publicity, or how any of them are currently being treated by AI or Sony, should be cause for people to engage in “drive-bys” and post things like “*twitch.*” Can’t there be more than one discussion in the general chat thread? I’ve seen people discuss several topics here simultaneously and it’s never seemed like a problem to me.

Sure, sometimes the discussion degenerates into “my Idol is better than your Idol.” But I feel like the people who are legitimately discussing the Idols of seasons past are unfairly swept up in the undercurrent. (Again, sometimes this is me, and sometimes it is not me. I don’t want anything to think I’m up on some kind of moral high horse, because I certainly am not. I am by no means here the perfect or model poster.) I’m a Taylor fan. I like talking about Taylor. And I like talking about him in a free enviroment where I don’t feel the need to confirm my thoughts to those of a large group of fans. That’s why I come here and go to TWoP instead of places like The Official Soul Patrol. And the benefit of coming here is that I can “bond” with people in a way that you’re really not allowed to do on TWoP. So yeah, I can completely see keeping the discussion to current Idol news. I agree with that wholeheartedly. But I’m very sorry, I do get kind of insulted when someone comes in here and does a snotty “uhh, season 6, anyone?” drive-by. As long as everyone is within the guidelines, I don’t see the problem. It’s not my website, of course, but I’m just going by my interpretation of what the guidelines say. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

A Blake/Melinda finale would be dynamite. I love them both so I would be cool with whoever wins. Who’s in the final 2 will depend a lot on who can come out with a “wow” performance this week and next. If Jordin recovers from the fiasco of last week, she could be back in the game. I doubt that Lakisha will stay. I like her but she doesn’t excite me at all.

I’ve always liked Jordin but…..
In principle I could never support a 17 year old winning this, and frankly like Lisa and Paris, I blame her parents for pushing her into adulthood too quickly.
She is acting like a performer who is in way over her head.
When you are not sure who you are as a person, and no 17 year old is, then the uncertainty starts to show the further we get in this competition.

I didn’t realize how invested I was in season six until Phil’s singout. I cried like an idiot, which means, of course, that I had an emotional investment that I didn’t even recognize. I think this is the first year ever that I completely turned around on my opinion on one of the Idols. I didn’t like Phil at all early on and wanted him gone. By the time he left, though, I really liked him – not enough to want him to win, but recognizing that he really is a super-nice person and decent singer. That’s never happened before.

As for the finals, I think it will be Blake and Melinda, with Jordin in third and LaKisha in fourth. This is an “off year” for shockers (every other year we’ve had a shocker in round three – Chris, LaToya over Jasmine, and Tamyra). I don’t expect on this year, but who knows.

I used to live in Del Mar… Bucky at the Belly-Up would be a fun gig. And Elliott at the SD HOB – that sounds like a great one.

I think that she might get some of his votes. She and he were very classy together on the seal. Plus, I think that both of them are underdogs and some fans like to support underdogs. Finally, some of Phil’s fans would be fans of his belting style and Lakisha and Melinda are the best belters left.

It’s a toss up for me about who will be in the final two. I think that Blake probably has the most committed fan base while the other three are often dependent on performance. As a result, I think judge/producer manipulation will hold a lot of sway this year.

Jordin clearly has the support of TPTB. If she sticks around, she will be singing last on final 3 night. I suspect smart choices for her from Clive and whichever judge picks for her (probably Simon, but Randy has been such a supporter). There will the usual WTF choices for the one they want gone. I think that they might try to de-rail Blake because his committed fan base might be able to pull out the win for him (plus, they don’t seem to like him). I suspect that he will get no favours in the coming weeks. Lakisha might actually get some help because I think that she is the most likely one Jordin can win against (they can manipulate Lakisha into singing “I Believe” and “Jesus, Take the Wheel” on final two night. “No, I’m sorry LaKisha, none of the other songs you sang previously were cleared again. This just happens sometimes”).

If it’s true that tptb don’t want Blake to win (and I don’t doubt it) it would be in his best interest NOT to win.

Maybe he needs to sing ‘what’s new puthycat’. . .

For what it’s worth…

About the “no backstory” aspect of this year, I would differ slightly. I think all of them have backstories delivered and boxes assigned by the show. And we know what they are. I think the fact that they haven’t delved too deeply into some of them (Melinda/Jordin) has helped the contestants tremendously. Melinda doesn’t come across well and is boring in the “talking shots”, and they would have to reveal that Jordin is a Disney Princess/AI Juniors reject if they delved any closer. Seriously, they are trying as hard as possible to hide the AI Juniors connection (which should have been revealed in her initial audition.)

I think Lakisha comes across as completely sincere when interviewed and that would help her as well as Blake, who is charisma personified.

So — as always, I think they know exactly what they are doing.

I would sincerely vote for unbiased judges next season.

Another intesting behind the scenes tidbit from AI Extra. Phil said he was practicing Blaze of Glory on Wednesday in case he got the boot that night. He always practiced on Weds, because you could go home at any point in time. Jordin, on the other hand, NEVER practiced on Wed. Heh.

I agree that they haven’t let us get to know this season as well as last season but I’ve managed to get attached to Blake even so. I still love Chris but not doing the fan sites anymore. He’s playing at a local event next weekend and will be going but wasn’t planning on putting a recap here.

I do think TPTB likes Blake now.. Simon really seems to like him a lot.
Even when he critiques him he is very kind with his words.

Heck Blake was the only one he pimped on this week’s result show. He deserved it. Blake’s performance was the BEST of the night.

Simon is no dummy, he knows Blake has tons of appeal and is very marketable.
And I also think the producers would prefer a Blake/ Melinda or Blake /Jordin finale, it would be much more interesting and fun.

I love that most of the hate for contestants comes from what the judges say about them. It’s okay if the judges subtly lean us towards their favourites, but we don’t like it if you just come out and say it!

Even more boring than a Jordin/Melinda finale would be a Lakisha/Melinda finale. They won’t let that happen.

I don’t think the show actively dislikes Blake – they just don’t think he should win (even I don’t think he should win; I think Melinda should for being the better singer). I think they have a pre-ordained finale and Jordin must be in it because she MUST win. It’s a race for the other spot at the moment though I wonder if Jordin will make the final 2. I would love a Melinda/Blake finale as they are my two faves.

The thing with Blake, though, is he is a wildcard right now. Despite producer interference, if he continues being unique (to the show, people, so don’t start with the “He’s no original compared to BLAHBLAH BLAH” stuff), he will continue to get attention despite what the show wants. It’s been the first time since Sanjaya left that the media has been reporting the show with a bit of excitement.

Oh and I forget who said it (nor do I care because these characterizations of Blake’s fans run together at this point), but I’m a Blake fan and I am no college girl falling for his plaid pants. I resent being stereotyped just because people cannot fathom why anyone would like Blake. Additionally, it’s surprising to me how people try to go out of their way to make people feel bad for actually liking this season. Shame on me for letting myself move on.

That was me, and I’m sorry if I came across as stereotyping Blake fans. That was not my intention. He certainly does seem to have a lot of college-aged female fans, just like Taylor has a lot of middle-aged female fans, but I know that that’s in no way representative of his entire demographic. Sorry it came across that way. But yes, he does remind me of guys I went to college with who put on this whole “sensitive Renaissance man” act just to get laid. I have no idea whether or not Blake thinks that way, nor do I care, nor do I think it makes him a bad person, but yeah, that’s what he reminds me of

And just because *I* don’t like Blake doesn’t mean that I can’t fathom why anyone else would like him. He’s definitely got a distinctive style and I can easily see why people find him entertaining and talented.

Taylor and Blake have one thing in come…..they are the only 2 contestants who ever used their hands to simulate GUN action. I believe Hicks pulled his trigger on Dancing in the Dark(top 3) and Blake pulled his on Bon Jovi night. :guns_tb:

Kat – I appreciate your comment. I apologize for referencing your comment specifically but it was just the latest in a series of comments about Blake fans (even though it is now clear your intent was different than what I thought).

I’ve been trying not to say anything and defending Blake because whatever; we never succeed in changing each other’s minds. But it’s one thing to dislike Blake. It’s another to be derogatory about his fans because one doesn’t “get” his appeal. When people start lumping his fans together (as has been quite frequent here in a the past few weeks), then I feel compelled to say something.

Sorry again. Now I will refrain from saying anything about it again.

I have all of Blake’s performances except “Mack the Knife”. For some reason, I didn’t love that one…maybe cause the song is not a favorite of mine. Other than Blake, I have Melinda’s “There Will Come a Day” which is fabulous in the downloaded version and, I’m a little embarrassed to say, Chris R.’s “The Boss”. I guess this shows who’s CD I most likely would buy.

I don’t think season 6 would be a lonely thread. I’d want to post there myself! It may just be too much for MJ to have to keep up with… was just a thought. There seem to be some real issues for some posters regarding this whole season discussion thing.

I’ve been watching American Idol Rewind, and last night, watched the finale performance show (again). As cute and popular as Justin was, he was no match for Kelly who totally blew him away with her renditions of the corny Idol coronation songs.

Much as I like Blake, and I do like him, I wonder if this scenario might be repeated in a Blake/Melinda showdown. She is so polished and seems unstoppable at this point. I can’t imagine a finale without her. I also can’t envision a finale without Blake at this point. I’ll be disappointed with any other outcome.

I would read both the season 6 and 5 threads. Neither would be lonely as far as I am concerned.

I love all Idol seasons. Want to hear whatever is happening concerning any of the former and current contestants.

I still enjoy talking about season 6 but am a fan of a lot of the season 5ers too. I have all four of the guys cds. I bought Kellie’s for my daughter. I wasn’t a huge Ace fan but I am now… Admittedly, after meeting him in person, I have a huge crush on him.

I have to say, listening to Blake’s mp3s, he really does record well. I really like “Love Song” and “Time of the Season” (from hearing snippets). Melinda’s are good too. See how hooked I am!!!

I’m pretty sure that Lakisha and Jordin would like to win. Blake and Melinda? I’m not so sure. Melinda wants better work than just being a back-up singer. I’m very neutral towards Jordin, but I think some of the backlash isn’t so much about HER as it is toward the fact that the judges have been pimping her out for weeks as amazing and the best thing EVAH, when in a lot of people’s opinions, she’s being consistently outshined by some of the other contestants.

I agree that Jordin is being pimped so much that it’s turning some people off, like me. I don’t mind so much when she does well but she hasn’t been nearly as good as they say some of the time and downright bad others (like Hey Baby). I really want Blake in the finals but don’t think he needs to win to do well.

Well, it’s probably because some of us think Jordin’s had more than one bad performance. And, some of us think Lakisha’s had more than one good one.

The excessive pimping doesn’t help much either. But, what put me over the edge where Jordin is concerned was last week’s calculated, on demand crying. That was pretty phony, and I’m not so big on phonies.

listen, i am all for stating that melinda has a great voice. and that she is performing well and that she is pimped etc etc etc….but she has no “look” and can sing no music approaching today’s market. she may win, but man, her album will tank.

foxydonna, I’m glad you like Blake’s mp3s! I’d recommend his “When The Stars Go Blue” too…the live performance was one of his weaker ones but the recording is excellent and one of my favorites.

I was kinda disappointed in his “You Give Love A Bad Name” recording. I definitely prefer the live version.

I hope MJ doesn’t have to resort to having seperate threads here for season 5 and season 6 discussions. I like reading news and discussions about all the Idols; it’s just what LB2 said..

I think Melinda would sell fine depending on what direction she goes in. I think that goes for most of the Idols. I think the sales haven’t been dependent only on the popularity of the contestant but more so on what market they’re entering (if that market exists, target audience, etc.). I don’t expect anyone this season to have Carrie or Kelly type sales but I do think they will live comfortably, which is all anyone could ask for in this world, right? (wow – I got a little hokey right there)

Well, Mr. Sligh should be a bit more forthcoming or not leave those kind of comments about the other contestants, IMO. He may well know, but I think things evolve as the season progresses and the feelings of the remaining contestants may have changed since Sligh was on. That being said, since we’re speculating…

Gina wanted it, badly. You could almost taste the desperation in her eagerness to please the judges. I think Sligh wanted it originally – though he claims not in retrospect (I think he’s definitely better off without the AI contract) because he had a strategy to try to win. He just over-played his hand. I think Lakisha wants it because she sees it as her chance to secure her daughter’s future. I think Chris R wanted to win. I think Phil wanted it, but accepted that it probably wasn’t going to.

I don’t think Blake really wants it – or better put, I don’t think he cares as much as the others. He often seems a little bored with the proceedings and is said to be “strong willed” backstage (by the PTB), which I think means not sufficiently deferential. He definitely wants to do his own thing.

Jordin reminds me of Katharine and both of them seem more interested in doing something to further a career in Entertainment/Modeling in general, not necessarily as recording artists although both can sing. I think Melinda’s heart is in standards and on the stage. I think she’d be happy to win, but I think she’d be happy to come in 4th if it meant exposure for Broadway or more and better gigs in the spotlight instead of the background.

As for who gets what votes (in theory, because I haven’t felt compelled to vote – yet) If I want to vote for the underdog, I’ll vote for Lakisha. If I want to vote for entertainment value, I’ll vote for Blake. If I want to vote for my favorite voice, I’ll vote for Melinda. If I want to vote for the one the PTB want most, I’ll vote for Jordin.

I vaguely remember MJ saying she didn’t want to start a separate thread. If I’m not mistaken, she started this blog during season 5 an now sees just how many still want to discuss it. I like having a place to talk about all seaason 5 contestants without having to go to a bunch of different fan sites. But I like talking about season 6 too. That’s the only reason I mentioned it and maybe MJ will think about it. It’s kind of hard for those of us in the middle who like to talk about both. Just sayin… Whatever MJ decides is fine. She has a great blog and I’ll continue to post here. I’m sure she’ll make the best decision.

Maybe her ego is getting the best of her, but last week after Chris got the boot, she was laughing,dancing and having a gay old time until the camera turned her way. Then she squenched up her face and rubbed her eyes as if she was crying,ugh,what a poser!

I am not sure why people turned on Lakisha, for me,she has been amazing the entire show. I would really like to see a Blake/Lakisha finale, but for her to make it this far is also totally awesome and I am so happy for her.

I read there will be 50 shows on the AI tour this summer, so assuming she gets $4,000 or so, that will be $200k before taxes and should provide a bit of a nest egg for her and her daughter. And I have to believe she will get some kind of contract, it seems to me Randy really likes her so maybe he will offer her some help. I am happy for her.

But seriously, I don’t think it’s necessary for MJ to start a seperate Season 5 thread. Maybe you all didn’t notice, but there was a lot of Season 6 talk this week. In fact, we even had the rumblings of a Season 6 fanwar.

I like current info about previous contestants whether it comes in one of MJ’s posts on the main page, or one of lisaB’s articles or from posters here on the blog. I also like hearing about everyone’s concert experiences. So, Bean, if you change your mind – I’ll be looking for your recap of the Daughtry show.

If we could all behave like grown ups – not bait each other, not craft posts about your non-favorite that are really just veiled insults to that contestant’s fans, not jump to the defense of our favorite by knocking someone else thereby igniting the fan wars – well, then I think we wouldn’t have to put so much thought into how MJ could change HER blog to suit our needs.

Speaking of Taylor. He sang one of my favorite songs last night…low down by Bob Scaggs..I must say, the first time he did it I hated it. It sound like a hot mess. I was praying that he would never attempt that song again. But last night I was ready to say, Bob who? I’m not one to suggest Taylor doing cover songs but he needs to record that song exactly the way he did it last night. Even the band was on the mark.

Me too, star. I love love love WTSGB. It is soooo purdy. And I felt the same way about YGLABN. I like the studio version, but I love the live version. Why couldn’t they just let him record it the way he performed it? ARGH at TPTB always thinking they know what’s best.

My favorite thing about Season 6 is really the downloadable MP3′s. I think I’ve developed kind of a problem, since I’ve purchased quite a few of them. In fact, it was the MP3′s that completely changed my opinion on Phil (I really didn’t like him at first – but I evolved into a pretty big fan). So, does anyone else have this same problem? And, what are your favorites? Mine are:

Chris R – Don’t get Around Much Anymore (a testament to the magic of ProTools I guess – because it sounds really good)

See AI is still a great show. This weeks performance show was as good as any last year and then we are treated to two great sing outs. I’ve made no secret of my new found philove and he did not disappoint with the best sing out I have seen. I rewatched Chris’ to see the “fake” crying and I came away with a new appreciation for Chris R. He actually did a decent cover of WDOA. Seeing only 4 idols left as he sang was also jarring. Its one thing to be “Mc”booted with 10 idols on the side but when there are only 4, it gives a lonely feeling to the remaining contestants. As they get along further they have to find their way without their new found friends.

I am not even going there in predicting album sales for anyone ever again. I sure got burned recently.

Anyway, just on likability alone, I am rooting for (but not voting for) Melinda. She is by far the most appealing of the remaining 4, to me.

I like all of the ones in this group, and would not care if any of them emerged the winner.

But my sensibilities lie with Melinda. I am sort of attracted to these salt-of-the-earth types (seemingly) like Kelly, Ruben, Bo, Taylor and now Melinda. They seem like good peeps and are talented, too.

SpenserJ you should check out Stephanie’s MP3s on the AI site. I have only listened to the clips but I really think her voice sounds great and would translate well in today’s marketplace.

I love all of Phil’s recordings. I love most of Blake’s – this week’s live performance was better so I usually download all the live performance mp3s from Rickey.org for him. Chris also sounds good recorded on most of his songs. Melinda sounds good, but I prefer her live.

hi – I’m a little late with this post since the discussion of whether Elliott is truly independent was this morning, but had trouble logging in. I guess there IS a place for beat boxing. I just got back from attending a concert by an acapella group called Tonic Sol Fa. They’re quite well known – have been on Leno and the Today show, etc. The beat boxing is perfect for keeping the rhythm of the songs. He definitely wants to do his own thing

I can’t speak for Blake, but he definitely pulled out the stops last week with his performance of YGLABN. He performed like someone who is in it to win. He has said he takes it week by week. I’m sure most of them feel that each additional week they survive is gravy. I do think he wants to do his own thing, but he may still feel that he can do that if he wins? I have not read Sligh’s blog this weekend.

For someone who never watched the show, he (and his friends) are certainly playing the game well. I wasn’t on Team Plaid at first because I was blinded by Brandon’s mega watt smile and his voice on this tune:

While I admit I think Stephanie left way to early, i don’t know how well a Beyonce number 2 would go over well as Beyonces star seems to be fading a bit. Her last cd was made in 2 weeks with old songs from her first cd.

I am not so sure about Melinda not selling. I think that is certainly a possibility, but I don’t think it is a given. She actually has done well in the last few weeks in some current genres (country and rock). Not saying that she would release a CD in either genre, but I think she may be more versatile and able to do something that could be popular than some are giving her credit for. Also, early on in the finals her song choices were pretty meh in my opinion, but she still managed to give a decently entertaining performance of them. And what is the creation of an Idol debut CD if it isn’t taking so-so songs and making something of them.

None of this means I think she is guaranteed to sell a bunch, or even that she will release something current (particularly if she doesn’t win). But I think that if she does win, and they manage to pick some material wisely, she might surprise people.

Honestly, VFTW have no effect on who stays and who goes. All they do is encourage their group to vote for the contestants they feel TPTB really don’t care for. That does not neccessarly mean the singer is the worst. The only real head scratcher was when they back Carrie Underwood. TPTB really did want her to win.

I totally agree with Dave about Phil’s being the best sing-out EVER on AI. I watched it for the first time yesterday and got kinda emotional. it was very moving how he smiled and hugged everybody in the audience, the judges and the remaining contestants. All the while, never missing a beat with his singing.

It was too late to save him but had he stuck around, I might have tried.

Chris’s sing-out was not nearly as good, but I loved all the banter between him, Blake and Ryan.

Sanjaya had a lot of his own fans who were not strictly VFTW voters. He got the “gumption” voters and the voters who felt sorry for him being picked on, and some tweens who thought he was cute.

It should be noted that VFTW chose Carrie Underwood season 4 and neither she nor Taylor ever hit the seal their entire respective seasons. At this stage of the game there really is no “worst” it’s simply a matter of taste as to who prefers what style of music or performances.

Just catching up here:

1. I’m not starting a separate thread for season 5. I don’t see a reason why the two can’t coexist.

2. There are lots of people at the blog interested in Season 6. Many of them are posting in the threads out front. It’s like a separate universe of posters out on the front page.

3. What gets me down is when I start reading the thread and it feels like Groundhog day–the same arguments over and over again. Even when talking about “current” events, the sentiments are often still grounded in old stuff. That’s what I DON’T want on the blog.

4. I’m enjoying Season 6. Last year wasn’t that hard to let go of, because I wasn’t that invested in the first place–not in any one contestant anyway. I had my favorites last year, but once the season was over, it was pretty easy to let them go–as AI contestents at any rate.

5. The discussion of backstories is interesting. I tend to really not like the obvious backstories, because they tend to be “crafted” and are one of the tools TPTB use to shove a contestant in a box. I don’t think better backstories would make the season better. I think the producers need to come up with ways for us to get to know the contestants, but in a less contrived manner.

Star – I was thinking the same – Melinda’s neck, Jordin’s height, Is Blake gay – all in the top 10 searches…….guess you have to not look or have tough skin if you are in the limelight! Or just laugh!

Speaking for myself, I don’t think it’s the invested interest in my favorite that has caused me to have a “blah” feeling for this season. I’ve had a favorite in every season and that has never stopped me from finding someone new to, at least get behind when the new season started, if not support after the season ended. But, it’s all good. I still enjoy the conversations and can jump in and out of them at will.

This is the first season that I didn’t have a favorite. I think Melinda is the best singer hands-down (and I think she’s gonna win), but she’s not really my fav; I’m not going to follow her post-season 6.

I have a LEAST favorite, though: Blake Lewis.

Oh Emeraldgem – I love that song and performance by Barbra and Barry!! I remember seeing it on cable TV – wasn’t that concert in her backyard? I think I have the album or cassette tape somewhere.

It is so amazing how so many internet sites have gone from almost everyone really liking Jordin and thinking she’s talented to suddenly calling her a faker, the chosen one, etc.

Perhaps it’s because Jordin is now a real threat to people’s favorites?

It’s so interesting watching this take place without having a horse in the race… it really tells the tale of what this show does to people- especially those invested in a favorite.

Blake is going to win anyway so it really matters not what order they are voted off in now.

I personally think they are pimping Jordin to give her the shock boot or the most improved boot. The finale will be Melinda vs. Blake with Blake winning quite comfortably now that he is the sole male left in the competition.

None of them will sell really well anyway, so I don’t think it even matters who wins.

I didn’t really have a “favorite” but I did like Jordin. I also like Melinda, Blake, Phil, Lakisha and even Chris R. I’m not so much liking Jordin anymore. I was growing weary of Randy telling me she was 17 and was trying not to hold that against her. Her song last week was just plain bad. But when when she was yuckin’ it up during Chris R’s good bye until she realized the camera was on her and then instantly appeared to be crying that was it. If I can’t at least like a person, I can’t root for them. I thought at first it might have been my imagination but apparently it wasn’t – unless a lot more people imagined it too.

Xo, I don’t really care if my favorite (Blake) wins. I’d like to see him on my television as long as possible so I will continue to vote. I will say I have mixed feelings on whether it is good for him to win or not. Word on the street is that TPTB aren’t interested in him, so if that’s true, winning might suck for him. He might do better going the Elliott-route.

As for Jordin, I don’t know if she’s a faker. She’s a gorgeous girl and she’ll have a career… no doubt about it. That doesn’t take away from the fact that they are pimping her (which you admit) like crazy and to me it is annoying.

See I watched it and I don’t think Jordin did a thing wrong- certainly not anything that we haven’t seen done before. The judges have used the age thing in many other seasons- including season 3 when Diana who was only 16 went to the finale. I don’t recall it being such a big issue that season- but maybe it was…..

Um, PJ the whole pitting up Blake with Chris R. and touting their friendship was very, very obvious pimping to ensure that Blake picks up Chris R.’s votes. Those votes will guarentee him a spot in the finale.

Also, Blake did a beatboxing twist on a Bon Jovi song and got rave reviews for it- when earlier in the season he tried that twist on a Diana Ross song and got smacked down heavily.

Blake is now the chosen one for the males and he is getting the benefit of very heavy and obvious pimping.

I honestly believe Blake is who they want to win- and I think they will turn up the pimping over the next few weeks. I think they will make it look like Blake won against the odds by beating out the three “stronger” singers. But what do I know?

I think part of the fun of watching a reality TV show is that who you start out liking may or may not be who you end up liking. You see a little more of those left each week and perceptions can change. I went from not even noticing Phil except for how deathly pale he looked to me to realizing what a great voice he has and his personality was starting to show. I went from loving Jordin to not liking the pimping and praise she gets when she doesn’t deserve it, as she has been inconsistent. I went from liking Melinda but thinking she was getting boring to loving her as she is mixing it up more. I think Blake is the most interesting of the bunch as I wait to see what he will do each week. I just don’t get Lakisha and don’t know why as she has a great voice.

It doesn’t matter to me if any of them sell well, because TPTB is making a fortune off of them anyway and I am just watching to be entertained. They will have the exposure they need so all is good.

I am hoping for a Melinda/Blake finale but think anyone of them could go at any time. I am excited to watch this week.

to me, Blake has gotten undeserved pimping, because they never really call him on his lack of vocal skills….they avoid saying anything about his vocals. If it were another contestant, they would outright criticize that.

I don’t think Blake hsa great vocals. I his appeal is the uniqueness he brings. While I’m not a huge beat box fan, I appreciate his gift for bringing new things to music – it needs it – so much of it sounds the same.

LB2 mentioned it in chat. I think she said that she read that they were going to sign Chris R, but no word on Blake. She couldn’t find the link, but she did see it somewhere. Still, it’s just gossip at this point.

There was also a yahoo article that mentioned the producers were surprised that Blake was doing so well. Maybe like XO says, it’s a ploy. Who knows?

To me Jordin and Melinda have been getting the lion’s share of pimping. They’re the ones that Simon has been saying will be the final 2. Melinda has always sung well but was never called on her safe song choices earlier on. Jordin has been inconsistent but no mention of any problems until last week. I believe they’ve gotten the pimp spot the most. Having said that I don’t believe they want a F2 with them. Blake with either would make for the most interesting final 2.

I think it’s harder for them with Blake. Paula has liked him for a while and really so has Randy but I think Simon and the producers haven’t known what to think because he’s different and has stood out. I think they underestimated him and also his growing fanbase. The ones that go to the tapings have been saying that Blake gets the most signs & and cheers when they walk in for a while now. I don’t know if that means he’ll go to the end but I’d enjoy it. :smile1_tb:

Machine? Lol. We’ve debated this ad nauseam already. He uses a software program that most musicians/producers use. I doubt he’s the first on AI to use it or the last.

I have a feeling Blake will win, despite the fact that all the other remaining contestants can sing circles around him. When he wins, he will be the first winner that is not a good singer.

See, I don’t necessarily think that this is a “singing” competition alone. In fact, I don’t think the best vocalist should necessarily win. But I do feel like the winner should be a good singer.

I know, some say they like Blake’s singing, but I really believe the vast majority, even his own fans, don’t believe his singing is that great… I feel, imo, that his voice is just pleasant, but he is Not a singer.

I’m not really invested in anybody this season although Melinda and Blake are the two I like best because one is consistently a good vocalist and the other is consistently entertaining (IMO). I think Jordin is inconsistent and is constantly excused for being “just 17″. I just really resent the pimping that is completely over-the-top and I hate being force-fed a flavor that isn’t my cup of tea.

I think the contestants can sing songs that were just written by the BeeGees, i believe Phil mentioned that in one of his articles about a song he was doing. I wonder if anyone does Emotion they will perform the Destinys Child version (too bad Stephanie isn’t still here, she would have killed it)

About Jordin, she’s not my favorite, but I don’t really think anything about her reaction during chris’s sing off…I just think that they are all aware of the cameras, and they are all putting on to some extent.

She could have just been getting into the song, it wasn’t like she laughed when she first heard he was voted off. I do think she was aware of the camera, and I do believe that she thought, “crap, how is this gonna go over.” But hey, they are all trying to make the best impression for the viewing audience…Jordin just got caught with her hand in the cookie jar.

Thanks PJ and thank you for the welcome. Very interesting. Well I can’t say I’m surprised if they sign Chris. They did pimp him an awful lot. My favorites are never the chosen ones. Never. I’m still bitter over how Elliott got treated last year so I would hate to deal with that again.

The weird thing is while I agree Melinda and Jordin get the most pimping, people around me are always complaining about Blake’s excessive pimping. From reading here I guess some think he’s pimped too? I do agree last week there was some but overall its mostly Jordin. I think Simon likes Blake. IMO he’s always been fair to him and never trashed him like he’s trashed some others in the past.

You can speak for me, pj. I have all his downloads, and I love his voice. I could really care less about the glory notes and the vocal olympics, so the fact that some others in the comp could do that doesn’t impress me. I like his tone, it’s very pretty. I LOVE the vocal on WTSGB. His voice is gorgeous on that one.

Seriously though, I think you either like someone’s voice or you don’t. I mean I don’t listen to the radio and think hmmmm…..I wonder if he could hit a high note, or if his range is limited. If the voice sounds pretty on the song, then you will like it. I guess I just prefer to listen, and judge by what I hear. It doesn’t matter to me who has the biggest range, or who is the most technically sound.

The glaring truth is that it doesn’t matter who gets the most votes on AI . TPTB pick the “winner” and they will promote and push TCO and kick the top vote getter to the curb if that person doesn’t fit their agenda. IMHO Melinda is the best singer and has been consistant throughout , even last week when she rocked the place and done a great job and that was huge because she was completely out of her comfort zone. TPTB will choose the winner although that person may not get the most votes . It will be the person they think they can pimp to the teens who spend their money on the music. I think Melinda would sell a lot of cd’s ( ala Natalie Cole , Vanessa Williams , Anita Baker etc.) but the target buyers are young people IMO.

I agree with this, it happens every year.

No offense, but I think that’s just something people say to deflect criticism from their favorite Idol. I’m VERY neutral to Jordin (I could take or leave her), but yes, she’s been incredibly pimped, and undeservedly so in a few instances. I haven’t been paying attention to character/backstories this season (mainly because there really aren’t any) so I can’t speak towards TissueGate or FakeTearsGate, but I think part of the backlash is that she’s a lot more inconsistent than Melinda, and yet she’s constantly praised while Melinda often gets the “it wasn’t your best performance” routine. Eh. I dunno.

Oh, by the way, Ken Barnes is reporting that Sundance got a record deal.

Last year ,to me, was proof that votes don’t matter so I choose not to participate and I have spoken to quite a few people who feel the same way and they are also not voting. IMHO a Jordin / Blake final is what TPTB would prefer. The pimping of #4 from AI5 is so blatant that I would have to be comatose not to see it . I have changed from liking #4 to don’t like him at all now.
Change of subject:: Eric & Danielle won the Amazing Race tonight. So glad the beauty queens lost. They were pretty on the surface but ugly clear to the bone. What nasty people they are.
