`Idol’ soul singer Elliott Yamin shows up Hicks on debut CD

Elliott Yamin’s debut album proves one thing: The Soul Patrol’s allegiance to American Idol winner Taylor Hicks was misplaced last year.

Yamin, who finished third, has a self-titled debut that may not quite belong on a shelf with your parents’ old Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder or Marvin Gaye LPs, but it’s a much closer fit than Hicks’ faux-soul dud released in December that has already checked out of the Top 100……

…This season, the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sixth, the South has seemed particularly strong. Of the 11 singers remaining at press time, 7 are Southerners, and Melinda Doolittle of Brentwood, Tenn., and Lakisha Jones of Fort Meade, Md., have emerged as fan and judgesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ favorites. Hicks proves he’s the ‘real deal’

You could put Taylor Hicks up against this year’s crop of “American Idol” contestants and he’d probably win again.

He has more energy than all of them combined.

At his Orpheum Theatre concert Saturday night, he bounced like Tigger, twirled like a top and danced like a Southern preacher.

Oh, yeah … and he sang pretty good, too.

Because he just released his first post-”Idol” album, Hicks doesn’t have a string of “remember these?” hits. As a result, he’s forced to sell the unknown songs with the same passion. It worked, but the 30-year-old Alabama native really got a reaction when he covered Hall and Oates’ “She’s Gone” and sang a tribute to Ray Charles. It was real “Idol” time with both — a chance to show what he’s able to do with classic material…..

‘Idol’ Taylor Hicks: Fading to gray?

…EW speculated that it was a combination of Hicks’ unhip look, untrendy sound and unwillingness to consider advice from execs at J Records. Or maybe it’s just that his “Idol” moment is fleeting.

We were promised a quarter-hour on the phone with the 30-year-old guitarist/harmonica player. But someone from his management explained that the Alabaman was crunched for time so our 15 minutes became five. Will the same be said of his career?

Here’s what Hicks, master of the one-sentence sound-bite answer, had to say in a five-minute, lightning-round interview before his management person stepped in to end it…

Country music star Trisha Yearwood, in her own words

…I was a receptionist. I worked for a record label. And that was wonderful because I was not, and am still not, a really aggressive person. … I would never be on “American Idol,” for instance. I mean, I would never just say, “I’m really great. Would you like to hear me?” … But when I worked at the record label and nobody knew I was a singer – because I was very shy – I watched people walking in and out of those doors every day doing what I really wanted to be doing and I realized … if you don’t get a little bit aggressive and let somebody know what you want to do, you’re gonna get to answer the phones and order Liquid Paper for the rest of your life…

Booted from last year’s ‘Idol,’ Chris Daughtry has last laugh with chart-topping album

Along with validating the obvious à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ people love a talent show à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ “American Idol” has proven that your mom was right: Winning isn’t everything.

Last month, Jennifer Hudson, who didn’t make the Top 5 on the show in 2004, walked to the podium to collect a supporting actress Oscar for “Dreamgirls.”

Over in pop land, Chris Daughtry, the first one booted from the final four last year, hit the top of the charts with “Daughtry,” which just became the fastest-selling debut in Soundscan history.

There was shock and controversy upon Daughtry’s early exit from “American Idol,” but none of that seems to matter now. The North Carolina rocker, a reject from “Rock Star: INXS” as well, was signed to RCA Records last July and now is on a sold-out tour with a smash album…

The only proven success to come out of the show is kelly Clarkson, and possibly Carrie underwood and PWE. Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s pretty lame for 5 seasons, no?

I just can’t agree with this. PWE is still completely green and riding on the AI Hype machine. Give it a couple of years and a couple more seasons and see if he’s still standing or deep in dept to his label and back working at Honda.

Kelly and Carrie are definitely still standing and if you consider touring success and income as the measuring stick, then Clay is second only to Kelly and not by much. He’s brought in about 34 million to Kelly’s 35 and he’s going on tour again in a few months. In terms of longevity and total # of CD sales he is second only to Kelly. And by Debut CD total sales he is second only to Carrie.

Season 5 artists have potential but it’s still too soon to tell.

CD sales are secondary to touring. The record company only needs to make enough to show a profit on CDs and they are happy. The artist gets to make another CD and can tour again. The touring is where they make their income.

Seeing is believing in ‘Idol’ audience

…As for the actual performances, it’s amazing how dramatically different they come across live. With an impressive orchestra going full throttle, the sound has a power and lushness that can get lost in TV translation.

And so it’s only natural for the audience to get swept up into a hand-clapping, fist-pumping frenzy. On the downside, the robust music has a way of drowning out some vocal imperfections. So although we were actually enjoying the tornado of wild hair and flailing limbs that was Sanjaya Malakar on “You Really Got Me,” many couch potatoes at home were finding it to be spectacularly atrocious.

What’s cool about being there is that you have the entire breadth of the scene in front of you at all times, so you can focus on what you prefer to rather than what the swooping, dive-bombing cameras single out. I often found myself observing the judges and being surprised at how preoccupied they seemed during the performances. Paula and Simon playfully whisper to one another throughout the telecast, and at one point he even gives her a back rub. You wonder: Do they actually hear the songs?…

The “anchor news” actors are behind him saying stuff like “why is Sanjaya from American Idol here?”, “Is he happy or scared, we don’t know?”, “he is terrible, he is really bad”, then the camera goes into the audience where a blonde actress playing the tween is crying and clapping her hands (?Kristen Wiig), then they show a tween boy with braces crying as well (played by Fred Armisen), then they show Dan Aykroyd crying his eyes out (my interpretation was he was suppose to be a pedophile). ACTOR WILL GIVE BECKHAMS’ SHOW A BIT OF ‘REALITY’

Pepper is just one of many absolutely brilliant albums by them with so many genius songs I had forgotten about. Sooooo, my next investment is to replace all my Beatles albums with CD’s.

American Idol’s Jennifer Hudson Duets With Ne-Yo

Oscar Winner Jennifer Hudson has repaid singer/songwriter Ne-Yo for helping pen songs on her debut album, by recording a duet with the R&B hunk for his next release.

The hot couple recently teamed up in the studio to work on the Dreamgirls star’s debut, and she’s so impressed with his efforts so far, Hudson has agreed to record a duet with her new pal.
Ne-Yo tells Mtv News, “We did a duet together and it came out very hot. The name of the song is called Leavin’ Tonight and… it’s one of those songs where I am clearly being out-sang and I know it.

“But, because it is Jennifer Hudson and she has such an amazing voice, it’s just an honour to be on the track with her.

“The bigness of her voice and the regularity of my voice, the contrast between the two is like night and day and it makes perfect sense.” (c) WENN

P.S…..Al Gore still won season two.

    Nah, Al Gore lost.

For me it’ll be between Chris S. and Sanjaya as well. Whichever one does it for me and makes me cheer the loudest.

    No

    Seriously

There is something very wrong with a 54 year old woman gettin’ off on watchin’ Sanjaya sing her very favorite song by one of her very favorite all time fucking best bands ever but…..I cannot help myself. I find myself over at Rickey’s (sorry MJ but I need help) and I find myself watching that fucking clip of his performance over and over. he was fucking brilliant. Not the vocals (obviously though with his fabulous performance who the fuck CARED?) but the way he moved and slithered and crouched and growled and whispered and screamed across and behind and in between that stage and gawd help me but I totally get why the 11 year olds are so freaked out.’Scuse me while I take a hormonal supplement with my oatmeal and fiber cereal.

  • longsong

Dayum, Dingo! Yer getting me all worked up with your visuals of Sanjaya! There’s an 11 year old girl inside me that wants to marry him.

Actually Lisa, if all you really wanted was true singing talent thats the way to go. No other distractions to blur the lines. There would have been many times last year when I would still have picked the “T”Man cause I perfer that kind of voice but E would definitely have come into the mix as well. On vocal pureness alone probably E.

  • thedingoateyobaby

LMAO longsong!! That HAIR! He looks so damn COOL with that fabulous jacket and those long lanky legs strutting up on that stage singing You Really Got Me!!! This aint right.

Looks like another sold out concert for Taylor Hicks at the Orpheum in Sioux City, Iowa last night.

EXCERPTS FROM A REPORT FROM THE BOOGIE BOARD :

I was at this concert and it has been reported that the theater holds 2650 and it was sold out. There were a few single seats empty but I would say that 2600 wouldn’t be too far off.

The side of the theater I was on there was standing and dancing. The crowd in general was up and down. At some points the entire audience was standing. At other points like for “She’s Gone” some sat. I don’t know what’s meant by “typical midwest” as I have been a midwesterner all my life and have rarely seen a concert were people just sat. At the end Taylor said that Sioux City had been the best crowd of the tour so far. So apparently he was ok with the standing/ sitting/ dancing percentage.

Merchandise was also selling well with people standing shoulder to shoulder the entire length of a long table and about 6 or 7 deep.

The big hit was a new cover Taylor made of Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Gone (Hall and Oates). He never sang this before in his tour and by all accounts, that was the highlight of the night.

Simon, just like all the other power-players behind the scenes know what is being said about this season. They are using Sanjaya to help the show. Every Season has had it’s drama and controversy. This season controversy seems to be the centerpiece of the show. Seriously, if Sanjaya leaves now, it’s back to really paying attention to these singers and realizing how boring they truly are. Where as now we kinda look forward to seeing what Sanjaya will deliver.

    …I don’t like Elliott’s CD.

There! I said it. I think it’s schmaltzy and schmoopy and it bores me to death. Even the peppier songs put me to sleep. And yeah, E’s voice is wonderful and a technical marvel, but…I don’t hear any passion behind it. Never did, to be honest, except for the night he sang Elvis’ “Trouble.” Love the guy, recognize the beauty of his pure instrument, wish nothing but the best for him…but yeah, the CD is a snoozefest for me.

    Hello, everybody.

I’m conflicted. I don’t think someone who is already a professional singer should win Idol and yet I like Melinda Doolitle a lot. But, and it’s a really big but, any singer who’s been backed up by big bands has an advantage in the competition as a while back I read an article about the band throwing singers off pitch-wise. Now Sligh, has a perfectly good album out there, a pretty damned good album.

So, trying to pick a fave, who is not already a pro or semi-pro is tricky. I may end up having to vote for Sanjaya. The kid can sing as I saw on You Tube, with no pitch problems whatsoever. I don’t care who Simon likes or TPTB. An amateur should win this. Help!

    RE: LisaB’s first article above…

Elliott Yaminà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s debut album proves one thing: The Soul Patrolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s allegiance to American Idol winner Taylor Hicks was misplaced last year.

I find it really interesting that people cannot simply praise an album for its own merits without having to bash another idol ( the winner ) and by extension implying that those who voted for him are fools for doing so.

The above intro to the review of Elliott’s CD is just one example of this disturbing thing. I guess there are certain things that never change.

Some of the songs on E’s CD are cheesy. Too bad they didn’t replace some of the gooier trax with Whiter Shade of Pale and some of the other bonus songs which are much stronger than a few tunes on the CD. I guess this way fans are forced to buy more. I’ve never seen an artist put out so many different versions of the same album. Even if you don’t dig E, try to hear WSOP. It’s quite good.

I’ll say it again. Simon is worth even dime of the gazillions they pay him. He can really stir the AI pot. Imagine this season without Sanjaya and you get the drift.

I don’t see what the big deal is.

An artist by definition is someone who meets the following :

    # Creates art ( musically, visually, etc.)
    # Creates art as an occupation.
    # Applies his/her skill at some artistic activity.

That’s what Taylor Hicks is doing.

Now, if he’s implying that this term should not be applied to other Idols who are doing the same thing but only to him alone, then yes, that will come across as arrogant. But he clearly isn’t doing it.

The term applies to him as well as other idols who are making music nowadays. No big deal IMHO.

  • Lisa B

So why is he being labeled as the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“WORST singer who has ever crossed the AI stage.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Hyperbole from the press. Granted, Sanjaya’s performances for the most part have been pitchy and unremarkable. This past Tuesday was a big departure from his earlier performances.

Every single contestant who has made the Top 12 can sing. When the press calls a singer “tone deaf” or untalented, it’s just lazy writing.

For some of these contestants, either they are too inexperienced to handle the stage and the cameras, or their vocal style doesn’t translate very well to the Idol stage.

There is nothing that Idol loves more than controversy that translates into Idol cooler talk. I doubt if TPTB want Sanjaya to win, but in the meantime he’s great fodder for the show. People will tune in to see what he does next.

LBB – I agree with your comments about the reviewer that felt it was necessary to mention Taylor in Elliott’s review. There’s no point in that. Just review the cd and don’t compare.
I have Chris and Taylor’s cds also – not because I love them – I do like them. I wanted to support those guys because they gave me the most enjoyable AI season ever. As soon as Bucky and Ace have a cd out for me to buy, I’ll get those too!

  • Kirsten

No CDs like Taylor or Clay.

Everybody has a CD these days. I saw a busker last month who played the spoons who had a CD for sale. I rarely see an entertainer without a CD availabe for purchase.

I’ve read that Taylor’s first CD cost around $1000 to produce and his second a whopping $3000.

A CD is a demo tape you can send to the labels and a way to make a few bucks when you are playing a gig. Once you’ve outlayed the studio costs for the demo, it is cheap enough to have a few more pressed for sale.

  • Lisa B

Most artists that do regular gigs have self produced cd’s for sale, it’s the norm.

  • bean99

I know the definition, LBB, but Taylor uses it in a way that makes me think he’s a little too full of himself but that’s just me.

JPfan, I was thinking about that. Wouldn’t all these different tracks on different cds turn some off in the end? Are you going to run out and purchase a different cd for every song you want. Man, that is overkill right there.

  • squishy

I see nothing wrong with Taylor calling himself an artist. He is creating music which is art thus he is an artist.

In my book the word “artist” doesn’t imply anything beyond just that. The word doesn’t imply the quality or the quantity of the art rather just a broad definition.

At about this time last year ( or a few months later ), I heard someone post a figure saying that Taylor had sold 17,000 copies of his Indie produced UTR CD.

    Question:

    1) Does anyone know how many copies of UTR he has sold since ?

    2) Does anyone know what his cut is from each CD ? It’s got to be much more than the standard 4 cents for each dollar sold when you sign with large labels like Arista.

I do know that his earlier CD — IN YOUR TIME was out of print and only very recently got re-released during his concert ( being sold for a whopping $25, which is robbery for a CD with only 7 songs in it ).

Are you going to run out and purchase a different cd for every song you want.

I’ve read numerous articles about the decline of the music industry which cite the fact that people have grown tired of buying CDs with only 1 or 2 decent tracks on them. It’s interesting that Elliott’s plan to boost his numbers is to get his avid fans to buy 4 or 5 copies of his CD just to get 1 or 2 tracks they don’t currently own.

Many of his fans seem thrilled with all the bonuses. I have to admit that I’m a tad more jaded. I think it’s taking advantage of his long-suffering loyal fans, but if they are happy, who am I to complain? It’s a great marketting plan.

There is nothing that Idol loves more than controversy that translates into Idol cooler talk. I doubt if TPTB want Sanjaya to win, but in the meantime heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s great fodder for the show. People will tune in to see what he does next.

I agree with you 100%. My question is, who will replace him as fodder when he is gone?

Are we still listing one hit wonder..How about the “thong” song. I can..oh never mind. AI is a family show..

  • Kirsten

From all of the AI seasons, who else? Does the band that Constantine was with pre-AI count? Maybe. Any others?

I haven’t followed AI this closely until now (I didn’t actually know Clay had a pre-AI CD until today). But, last year, Chris D had one out with his band Absent Element and Chris S this year has one too with his band Half Past Forever. Elliott sang back-up on another CD.

I was really just trying to defind those who had pre-AI CDs anyway. People were saying tha professional ringers should not be allowed to compete and I was pointing out that having a self-created CD should not preclude you from being on the show.

  • Little Boy Blue

The fact that both Taylor and Clay each recorded not one but 2 CDs shows that they were seriously pursuing the career. Enough to invest in themselves and go after it.

Clay had an alternate plan though — educating the disabled.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in Education at UNC and even went to get his diploma after the show was over.

I’m not sure what Taylor’s alternate plan was — maybe none. His interview with AI when he made the top 24 indicates that he planned to go back being a “broke” performer if things didn’t pan out of him at Idol.

There was also talk of his dad actually trying to convince him to work at a bank or go into real estate.

  • squishy

thong, ta thong, thong, thong thong…

  • jpfan

Elliott is def taking advantage of his long suffering fans. But I don’t care because: it’s an idpt. CD, he used his own $, he gets the $ not Clive/AI, it’s kind of fun trying to get all the bonus trax.
I just hope all the bonus songs show up on itunes eventually. The big problem for me is some of the strongest songs are bonus trax so kind of sucks if you buy CD without them.

Even if you don’t dig Elliott, his marketing team is A+.

  • SEXYGIRL

Aw, cà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢mon, Bucky??? I very much doubt Bucky calls himself that.

    It just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sound good in self-reference, thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all.

    Only when you Taylor Hicks..LOL

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Well, even though the CD puts me to sleep, I love E, and I hope he has a long and fruitful career. :-) And yeah, he DOES have great marketing.

I find it really interesting that people cannot simply praise an album for its own merits without having to bash another idol ( the winner ) and by extension implying that those who voted for him are fools for doing so.

Yeah, LBB, that bugs me too. But that’s part and parcel of Idol. People get invested in a favorite, even journalists, and they’re not immune to letting it pervade their supposed objectivity.

  • Paula

Just saw a video of Carrie on youtube from SNL last night. My, she is getting way too thin.

  • Lu

I’m a long suffering fan I guess but I thought the multiple bonus tracks was a brilliant marketing plan. I’m a marketing major so I saw what was happening – lol. No complaints from me. I felt like I was on a scavenger hunt last Tuesday! I hope Elliott makes a killing on this cd and I do not mind contributing to that cause one bit!

I do try to ignore him, Sexygirl, but that’s hard when you’re on this blog. It’s no different than others commenting on idols that they can’t stand.

  • SEXYGIRL

Yeah JPFAN, your right. But please enlighten me, shouldn’t Elliot be trying to reach outside of fanbase or is that pholosophy only reserved for certain idol constestant? Who in their right mind is going to buy seven different cds?

  • jpfan

Hopefully, Elliott will sell a million CDs and make new fans daily. But reality check, he came in 3rd on idol, was not signed by Clive and this is an indpt. effort. I don’t blame his handlers for trying to sell CDs to his fan base. Normally idol finishers like Elliott fade completely, so it’s pretty great that his first week looks to be strong. I’m surprised at how commercial and pop the CD is. We’ll see if he has legs in a few weeks.

  • squishy

I think having CDs with different bonus tracks is BRILLIANT marketing strategy. It is a fantastic marketing tool for the first few weeks of an album sales. Subsequent weeks which determines the longevity of the CD, it doesn’t help as much.

But in the poor state CD sales are in, most of the sales of a CD happen in the first few weeks. Rarely does a CD stay at the top of the charts for weeks after it is released.

Make the money while you can and a big chunk in Elliott’s case will go to the artist, Elliott.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Uhh. I see some stirrings of this conversation turning into the dreaded “my idol is better than your idol” We aren’t going to spend 10 pages discussing whether the self-referrential use of the word “artist” makes somebody egotistical or not. Particularly since the argument will typically be divided into fanbase camps.

Also, it’s unacceptable to tell a poster what to do (ie please ignore x Idol if you don’t like him), or to point fingers at a fanbase. Look! The guidelines are posted in a handy place for all to read….

American Idol: Are the Heroics Coming to a Close?

I will admit it: I watch American Idol. I enjoy it, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not into it as much as some people. Take my sister for instance: she is what we call a “voter.” I have never had it in me to cast a vote; I guess I just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t care that much.

Despite my abstaining ways, I have to admit that American Idol, or A.I. as the real cool kids say (for the purpose of this article, I am one of the cool kids), is a good show and a great concept. Not only has it launched the careers of several talented people who may have never been discovered, but it unites America in a celebration of song. With the music programs in so many schools subject to budget cuts, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nice to see America supporting the Arts: this will not be the day the music dies…

ALICE COOPER Judges ‘Inmate Idle’; Video Available – Mar. 25, 2007

Video footage of the “Inmate Idle”, a locked-up version of “American Idol”, which was judged by Alice Cooper and Sheriff Joe Arpaio, has been posted online at AZCentral.com. Six prisoners at Arizona’s Maricopa County Jail were voted through to the afternoon’s live performance contest finale. Inmates built the set for the final showdown, and 10,000 prisoners were expected to cast ballots for their favorite convict.

I was listening to an interview with Elliottthe other day, he called himself an “artist” in the interview….but of course, that’s okay, because it’s Elliott.

Seriously, Taylor has been writing music, playing instruments, and performing for over 10 years…he is an artist.

  • dave

I have to say it must be fun for some to spend and extra 30 to 50 bucks to get all of the bonus tracks off Elliott’s CDs. For me, I’m a deer caught in headlights. I still have not bought Elliott’s CD. I’m a bonus track whore and I’m not sure which CD is the “best” one. His marketing team has my head spinning that I have not bought yet.

I figure casual fans won’t care and will just buy one from anywhere and the obsessed(used in a loving, endearing way) will enjoy the treasure hunt as Lu called it.

I’m in the middle and I feel wayward. UGH.

I agree with you here Squishy but shouldn’t it be more about building and holding unto your fans as an artist and not just about milking an already established fanbase. Don’t get me wrong. I really like Elliott’s new cd but I would not see myslef running out buying seven different cds at $14.00 a pop. Even if he was my favorite. Heck, I was not too thrilled having to pay $14.00 dollars at Walmart for Taylor cd with the HOAD bonus track. I was peeved that it was not on sale because it was suppose to be the day before Christmas sales.

  • squishy

    Emeralgem,

What article says that Chris Daughtry says that the reason why he has sold almost 2 million albums so far is from a few loyal fans? All the articles that I have read, Chris has said that the first few weeks it was the Idol fans that bought the CD but subsequent weeks it is from new fans.

    Where is the link?

  • Barefoot Girl

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s interesting that Elliottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s plan to boost his numbers is to get his avid fans to buy 4 or 5 copies of his CD just to get 1 or 2 tracks they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t currently own.

Many of his fans seem thrilled with all the bonuses. I have to admit that Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m a tad more jaded. I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s taking advantage of his long-suffering loyal fans, but if they are happy, who am I to complain? Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a great marketting plan.

I know I’m in the minority of E fans but I do feel taken advantage of. I’m not the type to buy multiple CD’s to boost sales or get involved in street teams, etc. I’m selfish. I just want his music. I can’t get enough of his golden voice. So if there are any E songs out there, I must have them. So here I am purchasing multiple CD’s just to get those extras. They got me. Brilliant.

    Sexygirl,

I agree that an artist needs to build upon his or her existing fan base for longevity on the charts. However, even if an artist does build his or her fan base that still may not translate into CD sales just possible download of singles only.

Order of performance (with a tiny bit of analysis):

These numbers indicate in which order each week an Idol sang. For instance, Blake sang 7th each of the first two weeks, then 1st then 9th then 4th.

Sometimes the order means nothing, sometimes it indicates who is being pimped and who is not. Singing in the latter half the show seems to be more favourable. Some have argued that it keeps you fresh in the voter’s minds. Singing last almost guarantees that you will not be eliminated (but you usually get last spot because the producers think you are the best that week).

People are listed in alphabetical order.

    Still in the competition:
    Blake – 7 – 7 – 1 – 9 – 4
    Chris S – 9 – 5 – 8 – 3 – 10
    Chris R – 5 – 9 – 4 – 11 – 2
    Gina – 11 – 1 – 7 – 4 – 9

I see nothing wrong with Taylor calling himself an artist. He is creating music which is art thus he is an artist.

In my book the word à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“artistà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t imply anything beyond just that. The word doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t imply the quality or the quantity of the art rather just a broad definition.

    Yep.

Anyone creating their own music is an artist. To call someone an artist doesn’t mean you have to like their work.

Hicks, Daughtry, Yamin, McPhee, Underwood, Bice etc. All artists.

  • t2

I was thinking about all of Elliott’s bonus songs and why he would do that. In mulling over information posted by some of recording-savvy people on this board along with various articles about the recording industry during the past several months I’d like to offer the following and those of you who know how things work can tell me if I’m even close to a plausible explanation.

As an indepedent artist, Elliott is not privileged to the same product placement as artists of the major labels. In one of his blogs he mentioned that he himself met with the people at Target to negotiate a deal with his CD. If he and/or his team had to do this with each major outlet then perhaps the carrot they dangled in front of each them was at least one exclusive track. This makes a lot more sense to me than Elliott offering so many different bonuses so that his fans would buy a copy of each.

I don’t care who you are, you put on a better show IMO in a small club setting than you do in the big arenas. The music’s right in your face. The atmosphere doesn’t get lost in the wide open spaces of the huge venues.

No matter who you like, if you have an opportunity to see them in small venue, I suggest you do.

  • bean99

I think you never want your favorite to be the first singer anytime in the competition. There’s a reason they call the last spot, the pimp spot.

I think they went a little to far with having so many bonus options for Elliott’s cd. I did buy Chris’ cd from Walmart to get the 2 bonus songs but didn’t buy the one at iTunes to get the bonus track. I do find it a bit annoying that you can’t buy it separately.

  • AFan

An artist by definition is someone who meets the following :

    # Creates art ( musically, visually, etc.)
    # Creates art as an occupation.
    # Applies his/her skill at some artistic activity.

Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s what Taylor Hicks is doing.

Add the word FAKE in front of all of those and you got your man. Also about the pretty crappy EW article. Taylor shouldn’t have even done it if he knew he was going to be short on time. Magazines HATE it when someone cuts down an interview. If he had just cancelled they really wouldn’t have anything to write about but now they can write a nasty article about him with his dumb on-the-spot answers. Bad idea.

His album is reminiscent of Daughtry’s — pretty much sounds like same song, different day but, as with D, his fans will love that.

He does have some potential hits on it and has THE best voice to come out of Idol 05. I just wish he could lose the warbling.

    Still, I love E!

  • LB2

    Hey all!

Actually the first spot may be okay if you’re a strong contestant or you make yourself stand out. I didn’t see it hurt Haley. It also didn’t hurt Blake. In fact, if rankings are to be believed he moved to highest voted male that week. It could be because all the other top 8 guys weren’t that great, but still.

As for E’s cd, I liked but did not love it. There were definitely some cheesy songs on there.

  • sammy

Interstingly, it wasn’t a factor at all last year (maybe I’ll check the other 4 seasons if I get bored).

Here is what eliminations looked like last year at this point in the competition:

    1st: 2
    5th : 2
    6th: 5
    One each, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10

Eliminated people who performed in the first half: 6 = 43%
Eliminated people who peformed in the second half: 8 = 57%

More people got eliminated from the second half and 6th was the real death spot.

    Emeralgem,

The reality is there is not an article in which Chris says that the reason why he has sold 2 million albums is from his few loyal fans.

  • bean99

Does it even matter whether Chris said that or not? He has no way of knowing who’s really buying his albums.

  • Lisa B

The reality is that he alluded to faithful loyal fans.

Everyone is entitled to interpret an article any way they see fit.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Are we REALLY going to start this shit today?

As bean said, he has no way of knowing who’s buying the albums. If a “few loyal fans” can buy up +/- 90,000 every week, they must either have some awesome sugardaddies/mommas or make a shitload of money!

I’m sure those people are also paying off radio stations and MTV/VH1 to play his song/video. :rolleyes_tb:

Catching up… Idol is nothing if not very, very wise in terms of marketing. Offering mp3s of full-length songs is genius! Funny, the only songs that I am inclined to buy are boths of Sligh’s and Blake’s “Time of the Season.” All three of these tracks are contemporary and really sound great. Sligh’s voice records beautifully. Hmmmm. Interesting. I listened to all of the preview tracks too.

On Sanjaya, the tweenies can only carry him just so far (see John Stevens, season 3 who lasted until sixth place). I don’t think he’ll win, but he will be around for a long time. The SNL skit was great, though. Totally surprised and loved Akroyd sobbing in the audience.

    I still love Elliott’s CD.

  • squishy

    LisaB,

Agreed, Foxydonna. I posted about this earlier today on one of the other threads- in essence I wrote that the downloads give you a pretty good sense of how these idols will sound on cd, since they are studio recordings using studio tools to brighten and enhance the vocals.
I also wondered who is producing these mp3à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, and how much time they are allowed to put into them as far as retakes and post production?

AI will make bundle on the downloads, and I hope the idols will be getting a cut of the cash.
Providing these downloads is a great marketing tool, the producers get a sense of how the kids sound in a recording studio, and they keep the fans happy. Win Win Win!

I decided to download one of the Idol MP3s from last week and settled on Jordin’s “I Who Have Nothing”. It was my test. :-) The quality is great and well worth it to have studio versions of your favorite performances as the season goes along.

Nashville Star does this with downloads via iTunes. It really is brilliant marketing – I’m surprised it took Idol so many seasons to get this going.

About Elliott’s bonus tracks – I’m not sure if it’s as simple as Elliott ripping off his fans and calling all the marketing shots – at least I’d like to think that. Competition between stores and download websites also has to be taken into account. It might be that Target insisted on the exclusive bonuses to maybe compete with Walmart. What was Elliott going to do – walk away and not have his CDs sold at Target? It almost seems that Walmart’s were an afterthought since they are downloads and were added to compete with Target. I don’t really know – just guessing.

Only nutty Elliott fans – like me – seem to be worried about getting all the bonus songs. Two or three of them can be downloaded without buying the entire cd.

Well, it looks like Sanjaya has hit the big time – a SNL skit!! what a crazy year AI6 is!! I’m not sure what to think about his performance this past Tuesday night, but it sure gave the show the energy it lacked so far. He surprised the hell out me – meek little Sanjaya comes out fighting!!

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

Hey all! I just downloaded Sligh’s performance from last week (I know…I’m slow) It’s really great though :-)

They have Melinda spitting during her singing and of course the incredible Sanjaya!!!

On the spoilers thread, with a caveat that’s it’s a rumor — does this sound right as the possible song choices for next week? The rumor is the theme has been changed from ’90s to contemporary pop –

Gina Glocksen – Nothing New by Ashlee Simpson.
Blake Lewis – Remedy by Jason Mraz.
Jordin Sparks – Sitck With You by Pussy Cat Dolls.
Chris Richardson – My Stupid Mouth by John Mayer.
Sanjaya Malakar – Higher Ground by Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Haley Scarnato – Ordinary Day by Vanessa Carleton.
Phil Stacy – Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden.
Chris Sligh – A Little Less Sixteen Candles, a Little more Touch Me by Fall Out Boy.
Melinda Doolittle – Rainy Days by Mary J Blige
Lakisha Jones – If I was your woman by Alicia Keys

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    Here’s another topic for ya:

What will Blake sing on Tuesday? Here are the clues his friend from Common Market has posted on the AI board:

Apparently, it’s a song that will make the ladies swoon and make each one feel like he’s speaking directly to them. It’s NOT the Backstreet Boys (thank gawd). It was first performed in the late 80′s, but redone in the 90′s, and has actually been redone by two different groups/singers.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Collette, I think that’s already been confirmed as a fake spoiler list. :)

  • Kirsten

colette: The rumor is the theme has been changed from à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢90s to contemporary pop à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’

That’s no longer a rumour. Ken Barnes at USA Today confirmed it (and the song choices Stephanie was debating for this week were from several different decades).

  • squishy

I don’t know about Sanjaya’s song choice for this week. I hope this isn’t true.

IMO, Gina really should stay away from Ashlee Simpson.

  • bean99

Rickey said he’s not able to get spoilers this week but he did confirm that Gwen hadn’t even taped her part by the time that list came out. It had quotes from what she was supposed to have said about each song/singer. Even without that, the list was pretty suspect.

  • colette

So we’ve already got two conflicting reports here — that this list was a fake, and that it might be right.
    Anyone know anything more definitive?
I actually like the choices for Melinda and LaKisha, by the way. Since I’m more up on 1960s-90s music, I don’t have a clue about the other stuff….

  • Kirsten

Apparently, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a song that will make the ladies swoon and make each one feel like heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s speaking directly to them. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s NOT the Backstreet Boys (thank gawd). Well, that describes a half a gazillion songs. It’s amazing how many songs have cover versions.

    But, here is my guess:

    Eternal Flame.

It was originally a number one song for the Bangles in 1989. It has since been re-done in the 90s by Human Nature and Atomic Kitties (you tube links provided under the names).

Blake could do something with that song.

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

Based on what I know, the list isn’t a real spoiler

Also, I’ve never seen Taylor act that way. He even has a different accent. He sounds way more country than he has in interviews and stuff.

Also, I really don’t think that list is right. Although I would like to hear Blake finally sing some Jason Mraz. Sanjaya doing rock again could be interesting. Especially since Chris totally rocked that song last year. Gina, Ashlee Simpson? Come on. I like you, stop. I think it doesn’t really matter what Haley or Phil sing because they’re the next on the chopping block anyway. I like Haley’s song choice, but she’ll be horrible. And Phil, I seriously could care less, but this song choice makes me hate him more.

Based on those clues I have heard of four good guesses suggested around the blogs, though they don’t fit completely.

OMD – If You Leave, which someone mentioned yesterday; the remake was in 2004 though

Cure – Love Song; the remake was by 311 in 2004

George Michael – Faith; remade by Limp Bizkit –> not a fan of this one; I would not swoon

Bangles – Eternal Flame (as Kirsten mentioned)

Too many songs fit that clue.

Sorry MJ. I was about to edit, but you beat me to it. :D

Anyway, LB2… I am the same way with “Faith”, I don’t think that would be a great song for him. When I think of a “sweet” song that would make us swoon, I think of a ballad. I may be wrong on that… but that’s what I think of.

  • SEXYGIRL

Jordin Sparks – Sitck With You by Pussy Cat Dolls.

I hope for Jordin sake that this is just a rumor because anything done by the Pussycat Dolls, IMO is all shades of wrong. If she is gong to do this song, here’s hoping she dress the part. Should make for interesting tv

Yeah, I hope Blake’s song choice isn’t “Faith.” I think it would come off cheesy. Plus, it’s such a low, whispery kind of song…I can’t really imagine him singing it.

  • LB2

    When I think of a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“sweetà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ song that would make us swoon, I think of a ballad.

Me too. The poster’s words seem to imply that the song can be Blakized. I don’t see that happening to a ballad so I’m thinking it might be something slightly more upbeat. Plus Blake seems to have an extensive knowledge of music so I’m wracking my brain thinking of more obscure songs. I was just young in the late 80′s though to know too much.

I finally had a chance to play through Elliott’s album (iTunes version). My thoughts:

He sounds great – but no surprise there. He’s got a great recording voice.

I think of Elliott’s music as “winter” music – which probably makes no sense to anyone but me – lol. Elliott’s music is what I would consider cocktail party mix music, meaning I’d put it on a playlist with other artists (is that word off limits??) in smooth jazz, R&B and electronica, because it’s smooth (except “Alright” which I’m not crazy about) and lends itself to a nice, easy indoor party vibe.

I probably wouldn’t play Elliott’s music while driving in the car. Playing it through all the way did tend to lose my attention and I need to have something more uptempo or diverse when I’m driving. I probably wouldn’t play it in a mix for a backyard party (to me, Taylor’s is “summer” music).

My favorite track on the album is “Free”. He uses a lot of his lower range, me likey.

No! That makes total sense, although I’d personally qualify most of the songs on Elliott’s album as Fall or Spring songs. Those are songs I wouldn’t mind playing while driving down the road with the windows rolled down and the wind in my hair. *sigh* Anyway, the music I listen to definitely tends to vary depending on the seasons or weather. I listen to more jazz and blues when it’s cooler, and more folk, pop, and alternative when it’s warmer.

“Alright” is also my least favorite track on the album. It always gets skipped, much like Taylor’s GMT. Different strokes for different folks though.

Drunk driving is very serious. My friend died in a drunk driving accident on Saint Patricks Day a few years ago.

On my way to Las Vegas a couple years ago, in the car in front of me on the freeway a couple was killed trying to get out of the way of a drunk driver who got into their lane. Their car turned over 3 times on the freeway.

wow Squishy, to witness something like that must have been quite a shock to the system..

    Sexygirl,

It freaked me out and I am a physician who deals with life and deatb in my job (I am neonatologist) but it is different when it is close to your own life.

First Taylor, now Sanjayaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦This boy may win yet.

Why not first (Kelly or Ruben or Fantasia or Carrie) now Sanjayaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ HUH ? What makes Taylor stand out ?

This refers to the fact that they were both parodied on SNL. Plus, they’re both EXCELLENT performers. Hah!

  • db

Taylor covers Sheryl Crow’s Run, Baby, Run in Dallas:

    Part 1
    Part 2

ETA: I finally watched the SNL clip on the front page, and OMG!! :lol_tb: Andy Samberg does an amazing Sanjaya.

Taylor isn’t the first Idol to be parodied by SNL. Clay, Ruben, and Justin have all fallen prey to the SNL scribes.

Here’s a partial list of Idols impersonated on SNL (I only bothered checking for the winner and runner-up for seasons 1-5):

    Season 1
    Justin Guarini

    Season 2
    Ruben Studdard
    Clay Aiken

    Season 3
    nil

    Season 4
    nil

    Season 5
    Taylor Hicks

    Season 6
    Sanjaya Malakar

    ALERT

    great news
    Taylor’s JTFTW has re-entered the top 40 chart AT #427 HAS A UP ARROW.only has 1 spin but it’s a start :thumbup_tb:

    Sexygirl,

After that happened it was really surreal. The freeway stopped and everybody got out of their cars. The car was upside down and blood was streaming from the car. The left side of the car was crushed. It took the longest time for the cops to come for it was the freeway to Vegas and not much going on on that highway. The lady who was drunk driving was taken away by hand cuffs and they just covered the car area where the bodies were with a white sheet.

I watched the news that night and it said that the lady was drunk driving.

I didn’t enjoy my weekend in Vegas. I was freaked out all weekend.

She wrote it when she was about 15 or 16 when her parents separated (listen to the words). Good oleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Clive would not let her record HER songs so I believe she released it when she went with her new management team (could be wrong here.)

You are wrong on several counts. Clive has nothing to do with Kellyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s managementà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s with Sony BMG and indeed had to approve all of the songs for Kellyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s CDs. Kelly is still with Sony BMG, recording for RCA.

    Kelly à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“firedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Simon Fuller and 19 Management
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ -
You are correctà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Kelly apparently had to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“fightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Clive to name her first CD Thankful. Clive has a tremendous amount of power over the Idols regardless of who is managing them. 19 Management also has a lot of control over them.
Indeed, her contract with Simon Fuller was supposedly bought out for $3 million.

Perhaps her new management team has more persuasion with Clive baby! All I know is that she has flourished since changing management. Good for her!

db, unable to get your posts to run — is there another path??

    Thanks

db — figured out how to open the link and all I can say is WOWZER!

Thanks so much for sharing that one, it is just beautiful. He really has a wonderfully emotive voice and an unbelieveable way of performing the songs.

  • madaboutu

db………..I take it you have not posted the RBR vid on youtube or gofish? I would love to send this to someone who will not get to see Taylor in concert.

  • db

    juliegr,

The links are working for me. Try this link here doing a search for Taylor Hicks. You might want to try updating Flash as well.

    Hope that helps. :)

    ETA: never mind :)

ETAx2: madaboutu, those videos aren’t mine. I found a link to the videos over at the Boogie and merely decided to share the links here. I’d feel a bit odd posing someone else’s videos on Youtube or Gofish. You can always try emailing the myspace links…

  • madaboutu

db……….I understand what you’re saying about the posting. Is it OK that I passed it on to one thread at Gray’s? I hope it doesn’t cause a problem. Guess I had better ask before I pass next time. (I’m glad you posted it tho)

  • db

    mad,

LOL, no worries. It great video and definitely worth sharing. I also saw your post at GC’s and I went ahead and posted a teeny-tiny disclaimer of my own. :)

  • WVFan

CMT had a special on tonight “TOP 20 Sexiest Southern Females” and Carrie made number 11 :)

DB..loved the links to Run Baby Run! Taylor nailed that song for sure. I know I am late but just had to say…WOW!!
