    Listen up, Daughtry fans!

Listen up, Daughtry fans! The chart toppin’ rockers roll into Greensboro later this week for a free concert in Hamburger Square.

Chris Daughtry, frontman and Guilford County resident, snuck away from his hectic tour schedule a few weeks ago to talk to us about life, love and sleeping on a bus…

St. Patrick’s Day Serves as Warmup for Daughtry Concert in Greensboro

…On Saturday, downtown turns green to celebrate the most famous non-Irish Irish saint. (St. Patrick, in fact, was born in Roman Britain in the fourth century.) On Friday, March 23, Chris Daughtry returns home to perform a free concert as part of the “Tournament Town” celebrations for the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament…

A new blue-eyed soul man in town

    Blue-eyed soul.
    The Righteous Brothers made it.

So did Roy Head – father of ousted American Idol wannabe Sundance.

Seventies rockers Boz Scaggs and Robert Palmer were acolytes.

Eighties New Wavers Simply Red and Culture Club wore it like a second skin.

Philly’s Todd Rundgren and Hall & Oates were past masters (although both objected to the label)…

Bigger isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t better à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ particularly when it comes to pop music.
Like a sinister disease that seems to infect every solo artist who steps onstage, the practice of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“oversingingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“ has become rampant à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ from Christina Aguilera and Mary J. ‘American Idol’ and democracy

We’ve already made instant food and instant information part of our culture. Now, thanks to “American Idol,” we’ve got instant celebrities.

Last Tuesday night, I joined most of the rest of the planet (or at least the U.S.) and tuned in for the first time. I knew about “American Idol” alums like Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Carrie Underwood and Fantasia (would she have won if her name was Gloria or Maureen?), because the pop culture machine wouldn’t allow me to ignore them….

    It’s Show Time!

… Those of you that are faithful fans of the show, know that the annual “Idol” tradition, is voting for those that are attractive instead of their singing ability. Most likely, you’ll have Sanjaya in the top 12, I could be wrong though. Then we have Chris Richardson ( the Justin Timberlake look-alike), who’s been getting a lot of buzz from the teenagers. So far, it looks like Lakisha Jones, Melinda Doolittle, and Blake Lewis will be on top. What happened to Kelly Pickler who appeared on the show a few weeks ago? Who is her make-up artist? Her new hairdo reminds me of Ethel Mertz in “I Love Lucy”, and boy did she blossom. I say no more…

    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m hooked on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Yes, that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idol,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ the one that shows up each winter and spring on the FOX television network. The reason I watch the reality shows

…My husband thought I was getting way too worked up about a stupid television show and truth be told, I was. But thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the problem with reality shows à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ you are invested in the outcome, you want the best person to win. If it doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t happen, you feel ripped off. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s happened with other shows sometimes, but mostly, the person with the most talent wins, making everything alright in the world. My world, anyway…

Diva’s not doin’ it for herself

SHE is the kitemark for trendy causes, the person whose very presence in a concert or photocall lends an enterprise the aura of right-on liberal respectability.

…Her next venture is a massive anti-poverty charity event in the US next month, featuring the finalists of the American Idol talent show – producer and star Simon Cowell has been her long-term manager. But last week it was the Trident vote, and along with Bianca Jagger and Vivienne Westwood, Lennox could be found outside the House of Commons protesting against the government’s proposal to spend tens of billions on a new nuclear deterrent for the UK.

Just another celebrity endorsement of a populist cause? As a cynic might ask, does Annie have a new record out soon? (actually, she is in the process of finishing it, and it will released later this year)…

    So what’s British Invasion Music?

Some folks are looking forward to American Idol tackling British Invasion Music on this week’s show. Not sure what that means?

There’s help over at American Idol: I Love This Cheesy Show – .

The most famous band of the era, is of course, The Beatles. Other well known artists are The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Animals,

The Bee Gees (pre-disco, of course) and The Who. Here are more you may have heard of-The Spencer Davis Group, The Hollies, Dave Clark 5 and Herman’s Hermits. I can’t leave out the girls-Petula Clark, Shirley Bassey, Dusty Springfield and Lulu
Find even more bands over on the Britsh Beat Boom site. Click on a band’s name and get more information.

Of course, there’s an entry in wikipedia and even Answers.com

Free tickets to see Idol? One Flint columnist says no

Free tickets to see “American Idol” read the subject field of an e-mail I received last week.
I promptly hit the delete button.

Hold on, you say. Maybe that one was worth reading now that Flint’s own LaKisha Jones is one of this season’s leading contestants.

But further research proves I probably made the right move. For one thing, tickets to see the “Idol” show taping are always free, but there is a long waiting list to get them, according to the show’s official Web site…

    New British invasion
Crop of U.K. musicians making big waves in U.S.

    …So what changed?

For one thing, there’s been a dip in pop radio’s interest in hip-hop. Rap sales were down 21 percent last year, opening up room for something else.

“Radio has become more pop-friendly, post-’American Idol,’ ” says radio analyst Sean Ross à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ which favors the melody-mad Brits.

For all the changes on radio, however, TV has actually provided a bigger boost to many new U.K. artists.

Corinne Bailey Rae only broke through after an appearance on “Oprah.” Likewise, Snow Patrol cracked the U.S. market by getting their song “Chasing Cars” on “Grey’s Anatomy” before they made headway on radio…

Review: ‘American Idol’ Taylor Hicks shares his soul

…Although the show was little more than half full (the Majestic had sold only about 1,200 tickets three hours before the show), the rabid Soul Patrol, as Hicks’ fans call themselves, more than made up for the disappointing attendance with screams and much snapping of camera phones. The audience was predominantly female, and some of Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ most vocal fans were old enough to be his mother….

    Couple of thoughts:

    1. What did did we do before youtube? Youtube is one of the best things to come around in a long time. When did it come out? According to Wikepedia, youtube was founded in February 2005 and now in March 2007 we get these AMAZING videos from 10, 20, 30, 40+ years ago. Youtube is like a history book. We are blessed to have this site so that we can check out videos from such historical eras such as the British Invasion. I agree with Time magazine labeling it “invention of the year in 2006″.

    2. Looking forward to the Simon Cowell interview on 60 minutes tonight. We should have a drinking contest and drink every time he touches his moobs.

For those that may have missed them, there are numerous song links in Saturdays thread.

    Great links, Lisa!

And now I’ve finally settled on a song for Sanjaya~ The Troggs’ “Love is All Around”.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=w2A0FLpLP9U

This is an easy song to sing, very laid back , perfect for his soft voice, and after all, Diana Ross did proclaim last week that “Sanjaya is Love”!

And in my perfect world, he will come out with moptop hair, dressed in a flowing, flowery hippie shirt and a pair of skintight bellbottoms.
Fragrant tendrils of mind altering incense will waft towards the judges table, ensuring a glowing critique from each of them.
And Sanjaya, the Love Child, will make it through yet another week as Simon is left curled up on the floor, mumbling incoherently as he fondles his manboobs.

  • jpfan

So many great links. Thank you. Two articles in the NYPost one about the AI6 guys and one just about Sanjaya. You can imagine what they’re saying. Question to people who know about the industry — if an album ships 150,000 CDS, does that mean that amount has been sold to retailers? I know return policies vary but isn’t that how CDs can become gold even before that many have been “bought”?

  • Metta

Re. Sanjaya, I’m not a fan of his, but admit it would be hard for anyone to compete in a field of so many big-voiced/power singers. I mean, yeah, he’s got other problems (eg, lack of confidence, stage presence) but subtlety is gonna inevitably get lost in the shuffle that is American Idol. A gentle voice–even one that is in tune, on pitch or whatever–just won’t take him far.

  • Margaux

Peter Noone, this week’s Guest Coach for British Invasion week was interviewed last night on WABC’s Saturday Night Oldies show.. I listened to a stream this morning..

Interviewer: Simon has such respect [for oldies] and know how much people love it.
PN: Anybody whoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s paying attention canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t deny the fact that that has been the best musical period, and hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really been replaced. I saw Diana Ross the other night on AI, the Supremes were at the same time as the Brit Invasion, and you think about who their competition was during that period, the fact that any Motown act ever got heard was amazing, cause everyone was running around à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Beatles, Stones, Hermanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Hermits, Dave Clark 5, and guess what, they shown through, the good ones.

Interviewer: Our music just got wiped out by all of you guys.
I think it was the enthusiasm. 1962 or 1963 was about, the music business was about in the same shape it is now. They were going and finding guys and saying, You look good, sing on this record, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be on American Bandstand. In England everyone was playing in bars, nightclubs, building up this following in a self-contained outfits. When we showed up we had everything with us, we didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t need a musical director, and an entourage. We just showed up. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the bass drummer, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the drummer, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m the singer. We could show up in a van, you could get us for half the price of a bigger act. Now everyone needs an entourage — or a karaoke machine.

  • Margaux

Peter Noone on the American Idol kids:
A band can only get good if they can play The ones who seem to be good on American Idol are the ones who seem to have been out singing more than once. Their mom didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t just say, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“go and audition for AI.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re all been around a little bit. Some guy with spiky hair from Washington, you can tell heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been around a bit, heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been in a band, and been around locally, and he can be the boss.

I will say to these contestants, At the end of this, if anyone remembers your name, youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve won American Idol.

I’m squirming in my chair. I know I shouldn’t post it. I know season 5′s over. Dammit, I can’t help it. Ryan’s interview with Elliott was on his syndicated Top 40 show this morning. There, I said it. woohoo

I just realized I was diggin’ on the Hollie’s Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress when I was 8 years old, and it’s one of my all time faves….it made that much of an impression. Cool song, kicka$$ bassline. I’d love to see one of the guys pull this off. Ricky Minor and the band could rip this one up!

  • hs

Metta I have absolutely no idea. :) It was excerpted from his debut with Ryan last week. I caught it on my local Mix 106.5 station (which is technically Hot AC) driving to Home Depot. My life is very glamorous.

He’s got interviews floating all over the place. The latet theme by the interviewers and music critics seems to be to bash Taylor during the interviews. Elliott sidesteps these efforts adroitly.

  • lg

Oops, meant to say I didn’t know that Jordin had toured with Michael W. Smith. My bad:)

Ryan has been really great to Elliott. Very nice that he put him on his Top 40 show. Did he do that with any of the others? I really have no idea. E got a very good review in the San Francisco Chronicle. Even if he doesn’t sell a ton, he has to be very happy with the reviews so far

I think Elliott has a great shot at this first single being a hit.

    Small Faces – Itchychoo Park

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=fofNPJ8RGdQ

Quick story about this song. Its a rather obscure one that I always loved and as most of you know, I met my guy in a political chatroom and on Saturday nights, when it was anything but politics we would all play name that tune.

Well I kinda thought I liked this extremely hillarious and incredibly bright guy and we flirted a bit but nothing serious….yet.

We were throwing out song lyrics and you had ta name the song.

Well, he and I were by far the smartest song kids in that room so I laid down the gauntlet, SURE that there would be one song no one would ever recognize.

I threw some of the lyrics to Itchycoo Park out there and I’ll be a son of a bitch but he typed the name of the fucking song even before I finished typing the damn lyrics.

I had a pretty good idea at that point that…as he would later put it….it’s fate darlin’.
Thats a moment I wont ever forget. Kismet.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Miss and kerri! I have not seen either of you in days. Hope all is well. I missed ya.

    Lisa, I love you.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Kirsten, when you look at those concert breakdown, Taylor is doing very well it appears even though it just shows one concert so far.

Would love a breakdown of concerts.

  • Metta

I threw some of the lyrics to Itchycoo Park out there and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be a son of a bitch but he typed the name of the fucking song even before I finished typing the damn lyrics.

Dingo – You have the best anecdotes re. your guy. When you think of all the stars that need to align for us to meet that one special person…

  • mississippigirl

hi lg, metta and dingo! long time, no see. :) metta, i’ve been politik’ing for my bro and dealing with my dog’s medical concerns….all is well.

lg….i can’t imagine Reba’s warbling and Justin’s breathy, nasally hip-hop meshing, but if Robert Plant is dueting with Allison Krauss I guess anything can happen!

  • Metta

Kirsten, when you look at those concert breakdown, Taylor is doing very well it appears even though it just shows one concert so far.

I wonder how much he’s pulling in from the merchandise. There have been reports from just about every show commenting on the mob scene at the vending table.

  • hs

Lu, we know he recorded “whiter Shade of Pale”, and the accoustic version of “Wait for You”, so those are both candidates. How do you feel about buying from 2 different places to get the extra four songs?

  • Kirsten

Dingo: Would love a breakdown of concerts.

Just to clarify, do you want to see a listing of each individual concert?

Nevada and I have posted them as they have become available, but they have straggled out for the last couple of months and been embedded in daily chat so I can see how they can be missed or forgotten.

I’ll see if I can come up with a compact format to report them with my next report if people are interested (don’t want to clog up too much space otherwise).

  • thedingoateyobaby

Dingo – You have the best anecdotes re. your guy. When you think of all the stars that need to align for us to meet that one special personà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

Ahhhh metta, as I said at his Eulogy, he, from the beautiful Pacific Northwest and I from the great state of NY. Two strangers from opposite corners of the country become inexplicably entwined on so many levels. And thats why he always said…it’s fate darlin’. Cause i can think of no other reason why the pull on a computer screen would be so powerful. They were wondrous days. I had all but given up on ever finding a man who would meet so much of my demanding criteria. He would have to be very smart, be very very funny, be very very very compassionate and kind, be very very very very passionate about what he believed in. Its almost as if I had set the bar so high cause I knew the chances of ever finding that person was slim to none. I was fine being alone and then, out of the blue, he came along.

I learned a lot from that experience. Its a large part of who I am today.

OK, thats enough of that. Its a beautiful (if not cold) sunny day outside.

  • Kirsten

hs: Lu, we know he recorded à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“whiter Shade of Paleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , and the accoustic version of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Wait for Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , so those are both candidates. How do you feel about buying from 2 different places to get the extra four songs?

I know that this is the trend these days and it helps to move more units, but boy do I think this is rude to fans… forcing them to buy the album twice to get all the songs (and if they make a mistake and buy it at a different store, 3 times). Effectively, you are buying the entire album for two freakin’ songs. I guess only ardent fans do this and they probably don’t mind, but I personally hate this trend.

And, yes, I didn’t like it when Taylor and Daughtry did it either and yes, I complained about it at the time (Daughtry has bonus tracks at Walmart and iTunes, Taylor has a bonus tracks at Walmart. Kat didn’t have bonus tracks, but she did release a pre-Christmas single CD to Walmart).

But, hey, it’s a business and people can decide for themselves what they want to buy.

  • thedingoateyobaby

Nevada and I have posted them as they have become available, but they have straggled out for the last couple of months and been embedded in daily chat so I can see how they can be missed or forgotten.

I like how you put it up on the screen today. My eyes tend to glaze over when I see SS numbers or Billboard numbers, numbers have never been my friend but when they are combined with words, I tend to pay attention more.

Its one of several flaws I posess.

  • Kirsten

Actually, I like numbers and I prefer the information to be formatted in an explainable way too (I think most people do). It’s not always intuitive what the numbers are for when you see the SS numbers (and raw mediabase numbers can be very cryptic). If it’s a large bulk of numbers, though (like an entire SS report or a series of them), it takes too long to format each entry.

  • daisy

Happened to catch Elliott’s interview on Ryan’s show this Am, on the way to the gym, totally by accident as I am never in the car at that time.
    Thanks so much Ryan!
Personally don’t mind the extra tracks thing, more songs from Elliott, it’s all good

  • jpfan

This practice of putting different songs on different CDs is lousy. Way to soak the fans but good. Another sign of an industry in the doldrums. I heard my first ad for E’s CD on Z100 this morning right before the “Win tickets to Daughtry’s sold out concert” blurb. Who the heck is paying for the Elliott commercials if this is supposedly an indpt release? It seems likely that Sony is picking up the bill. So in a way Clive signed him after all. Maybe some industry expert will explain this one day.

I love numbers. The more the merrier.

  • Metta

Its one of several flaws I posess.

Let’s name the others, to pass the time. ;)

I know that this is the trend these days and it helps to move more units, but boy do I think this is rude to fansà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ forcing them to buy the album twice to get all the songs

I completely get what you’re saying, Kirsten. In Taylor’s case, though, you only had to purchase one cd to get all the songs. That’s what I did. A problem does arise, however, for those who didn’t have access to–or have an ethical problem with–Walmart. BTW, I am one of those who has problems with Walmart’s ethics and so, from that standpoint, didn’t appreciate the dilemma presented.

  • squishy

    Thanks Kirsten for posting that.

It will be interesting to see how the Concert Venue numbers change by the end of 2007 when many of the Idols are going to be in bigger venues and others are going on solo tours ie Carrie Underwood.

  • lg

msgirl, I’d forgotten about the Robert Plant/Allison Krauss upcoming collaboration. I saw Allison last night on a musical tribute to James Taylor on local PBS..was lucky enough to see Dr. John and Taj Mahal duet.

dingo, how sweet, you and your guy being brought together by music. That was the case for me and my hubby too.

I am so happy for Elliott and agree he just may have a huge hit with the 1st single.

  • jadore

I would definately buy the Elliott CD with Whiter Shade of Pale on it. I hope someone sings it this week, what a great song.

  • Kirsten

jpfan: Who the heck is paying for the Elliott commercials if this is supposedly an indpt release?

    Elliott

jpfan: It seems likely that Sony is picking up the bill. So in a way Clive signed him after all. Maybe some industry expert will explain this one day.

From what I have gathered from Nevada’s posts, the artist pays for these ads even if they are signed to the label. These are fully recoupable expenses. So, Sony might front the money for Elliott, Daughtry or Kat ads (I’ve never even heard of a Taylor ad ;-) , but ultimately, the artist will have to pay for the ad before they receive their royalty cheque. And, if the album does not earn enough, it will come out of the royalty cheques for their next album.

  • Metta

So, Sony might front the money for Elliott, Daughtry or Kat ads (Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve never even heard of a Taylor ad ;-) ,

    lmao!

  • Kirsten

squishy: It will be interesting to see how the Concert Venue numbers change by the end of 2007 when many of the Idols are going to be in bigger venues and others are going on solo tours ie Carrie Underwood.

I expect I may regret my idea of posting numbers once the summer comes. It seems as though everybody will be touring then. Kellie, Bucky, Clay, Carrie, Taylor, Daughtry, Kat, Elliott, Josh, Bo etc have all said that they might/will be touring (and even the Idol Tour itself).

  • jpfan

Thanks Kirsten. I know Taylor/Kat got 1 mil to play with but I’m very surprised at the support E is getting. I doubt Sony would front the money if they didn’t have some hope of getting it back. So nice sign of faith. I think I’m in shock that Elliott would have a shot at a Top 40 hit. Very unexpected but keeping my fingers crossed.
I hope one day, somebody writes an article about AI, Clive and Taylor. Something real weird is going on.

  • squishy

I guess Season 5 keeps creeping up.

  • mississippigirl

I so wish I could hear Elliott’s songs. I still have NO SOUND on my laptop! *&^^%$#@#*(%$&^*(&)(*&%

  • Lu

Hey – I did hear Taylor ads on the station I listen to and lots of ‘em!!!! That was a joke about no Taylor ads right? Remember, be nice to me, I’m gullible.

About the bonus tracks – this is the first time I’ve really paid any attention. I wish there was one cd I could get that had everything. I’d be more than willing to pay extra for that. But, this seems to be the trend in the music biz I guess. I want the extra tracks so I ‘ll buy to get them – especially to support Elliott.

  • Metta

I just wanted to mention that there is an amazing thread over at the Boogie Board. A Finnish woman made the trek all the way from her home to come here and catch some of Taylor’s shows. Her name is Katja and some may recognize the name, as she is the creator of some cool Taylor vids over on Go Fish. Anyway, in the thread she recounts her experience of coming to America, meeting with and being looked after by other fans she’d only previously known online, attending two Tay concerts (including a meet/greet) and just generally being shown a good time. The photos she took–concert footage, Taylor’s old stomping grounds, her new friends, etc–are fantastic.

One thing that really stood out for me was the incredible power of the internet to bring people together–no matter how far flung (geographically) we are.

  • squishy

I just looked at the list of groups/singers from the British invasion that MJ has put up. It appears that the Idols have a varied and vast list to work with.

I don’t think it will be too hard for the Idols to find a song that suits their singing styles and personalities.

  • squishy

I agree Metta. The internet has made this world that much smaller, closer, and more interactive.

  • db

Well, rather that purchasing E’s CD Tuesday on the way to work, I’ll wait until after work – hopefully I can check in here at MJs during the day and find out what the bonus tracks are, then swing by either Wal-Mart or Target.

Thanks for the concert numbers, Kirsten. Very interesting and much appreciated. :)

    ETA:

Seriously, I did not recall having heard of any (but I was away when his album was released). I added the smiley because I did not want to ignite a war. The Daughtry CD “sponsors” most of the television I watch (this show is brought to you by “Daughtry” the new CD featuring the smash hit “It’s Not Over”) and I see Kat’s ads on All Access all the time, so I knew that they had them. We were discussing Elliott’s ads, so I knew he had them too, but I didn’t know about Taylor ads and I wanted to mention him so that people wouldn’t say I was claiming that he didn’t have to pay for his ads.

So, I will amend my statement:

So, Sony might front the money for Elliott, Daughtry, Kat or Taylor ads, but ultimately, the artist will have to pay for the ad before they receive their royalty cheque.

squishy, season 5 lives on… I am just so damn excited to everything come together for my season 5 favorite.

  • Kirsten

squishy: I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think it will be too hard for the Idols to find a song that suits their singing styles and personalities.

It shouldn’t be, but will they? When they had free choice to pick almost any song in the history of music, they made some atrocious selections (“Waiting on the World to Change” anybody?). So, this crew may still make some insane selections.

Tune in Tuesday to see what happens next!!!

  • db

When they had free choice to pick almost any song in the history of music, they made some atrocious selections (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Waiting on the World to Changeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ anybody?).

Oh, please don’t remind me of that – I wanted to take an ice pick to my ears after that performance. *shiver*

    Right, off for the day…

  • squishy

Kirsten good point. Season 6 has just started so I may eat my words later but one difference I see with this season and past seasons particularly the last one was that many Idols from this season do not know who they are and what their strengths and weakness are. As a result, they just pick crappy songs for their strengths and weakness ie Brandon and Sundance.

The Idols who pick the best based upon their abilities and know who they are as artists will probably be there till the end or near end.

  • lg

msgirl, when in the heck are you gonna get dude to fix the sound on your laptop, lol. You can just skip on over to Target for E’s CD :) Guess I’ll buy the WalMart version as there is no Target close by. (which sux, love their clothes too). I wish the same bonus tracks were available on every Elliott CD. That reeks, man.

I picked up Daughtry yesterday. I think it has a good mix of ballads and heavy rock. Even if I had never seen him on Idol, I would’ve at least downloaded It’s Not Over and Crashed. I think Daughtry will be around for a long time as he’s been a musician for so long…it’s in his blood.

    ETA: That’s all about season 5….movin’ on…;-)

  • Lu

I’m not sure I’ll be watching AI this tuesday. I might be too busy groovin’ to my Elliott cd(s)!

  • dave

Lu- Little Elliott’s marketing team is going to bleed us bonus track whores dry. LOL. :wallbash_tb:(haven’t used the wall bash in awhile and I needed to bang head).

i agree with the philly article, i always was confused at the references to taylor doing blue eyed soul, i always thought it was elliott doing it. and the san antonio article is the opposite of what some of you guys are reporting wtih “The audience was predominantly female, and some of Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ most vocal fans were old enough to be his mother.”

The article is referring to the demographics at that particular show, not to all the others. I assure you that the show I attended appeared to be quite diverse in gender and age. Having said that, the concept that any fan is devalued due to being female and “old enough to be Taylor’s mother” reflects poorly on the person advancing that idea, not on the artist or his fans.

  • griz

That’s right Metta – and I can tell you that an older demographic is less likely to change their allegance with the pop music winds, if you get me drift. Any ticket buyer is a good ticket buyer and Taylor appreciates every single fan that attends his shows – he’s so giving and accomodating with this time after the shows, signing autographs and taking pictures with everyone – even when he’s sick (as he was at the beginning of the tour). I hear he’s much better now and gave a kick a$$ performance last night in San Anton.

7 weeks before Griz and Taylor meet face to face ;) :jittery_tb:

  • mississippigirl

metta…at the Ryman (and lg can back me up on this)…i was surprised at the number of guys there….i mean, really surprised. Just around us were about 6 or 7 and the ones there with spouses were having more fun than their wives, right lg? :) AFan will say the rest of them were probably gay. lol Also, there was a GREAT mix of ages there.

I know this is off topic but there was a creepy guy there sitting behind us, by himself, who looked eerily like Taylor and you could tell he knew it. I kept thinking, Oh Lord PLEASE NO! Don’t let the guys who come start dressing like him or imitating him…ala the male Elvis fans who grew the big sideburns and wore the gold aviator sunglasses to his shows. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Yeah. I don’t think that will happen. :)

  • bean99

I’m thoroughly enjoying this upcoming British Invasion week. I even went on iTunes this morning and bought Eric Burdon & the Animals (the House of the Rising Sun & It’s my Life) and Cream (Strange Brew – I took quite a liking to it). I’m looking forward to seeing what Blake does. I hope he doesn’t change the song this time because I don’t think many of these songs need it.

TH fans only: ………have you read the recaps on GC? Basenji did a super job(from the cellcert), and Cypfan also, who was there. It sounds as if Taylor has created a show that is similar to what he did before AI…….where he really lets the band show off and he himself gets really into it and changes it up everytime. And I totally agree about the lack of promotion.

Radname you do realise this is an American Idol Blog not a fansite for an artist?

I wouldn’t expect to see an influx of male fans here to be honest, especially one’s who are only interested in one artist.

You need to do a little more research before you make such rash sweeping generalisations.

Most of the regular posters on this blog are female, so you aren’t saying much.

It’s the “and old enough to be his mother” which is a generalization.

I’m not and I know many other posters here who aren’t either. And, again, not that there is anything wrong with that. A fan is a fan, just like any other. To paraphrase WS:

“Hath not a mother eyes? hath not a mother hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same Means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a man/teenager is? Wow what a great week for Idol! We will soon have the Top 10 finalists for Idol season 6! I don’t know about you, but I was shocked last week at how America voted! It just goes to show that Idol still is the most intense and unpredictable show on TV!

On the Hit List, my man Elliot Yamin stopped by to drop off his new single “Waiting for You”! It’s definitely hot and you will hear it as my iPod pick of the week coming up! Thanks for now and remember to keep voting and keep blazin the Hit List! COLLAPSE

I ditto what jersey said. Technically is suppose, if we are judging “motherly” by say, midieval standards then I’m old enough to be his mother.

I’m definitely enough to be Taylor’s cool older sister.

Interestingly, we older fans tend to have more disposible income than the crowd that listens to High School Musical and are less likely to pirate music than the “hip” youngsters.

Okay, I’ve been watching some of Lisa B’s links this morning (I wonder if Phil and Sanjaya have been wrestling backstage over who gets to sing Tom Jone’s “It’s Not Unusal”) and I noticed this “Duet Impossible” thing with Lulu and McFly.

Okay, you Brits have some strange shows. What’s up with this? Normally, I’m strongly opposed to re-animating the dead, but I have to admit they seem to be doing a pretty good job of it. Is this a regular show and is still on the air?

To keep this vaguely Idol related, here is Roy Orbison with Westlife (signed by that guy who is bigger than Bruce Springstein, Simon Cowell):

Well I must say I am highly in the minority here on this blog. I’m male, not a Taylor fan, and to add insult to injury I like Kat! Stuff like gender and taste are usually reflected in the posts. Not so sure about the age thing. I think if we did an poll… well not many people would join in.
As for British Invasion week, I’m actually quite excited. I think Blake will probably rock the house. I’m also thinking Sanjaya may do well. From the clips i’ve hear most of the music is very mellow and simple… that exactly Sanjaya’s sound. The kid is a little stoner. He might surprise everyone. Of course, the media backlash has already dug him a big hole. I think vote for the worst might actually take over as more people join in for sheer amusement. Hey, I’m all for it. Like this show is about being moral and fair anyway. Plus, I love watching Sanjaya, he’s someone I looks forward to.
Also, I’m curious as to how the band is going to work on Tuesday. I think it would be really cool if the brough a 4 piece band out on stage to play with the kids. Bandzilla isn’t going to work on a night like this.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m thoroughly enjoying this upcoming British Invasion week.

Bean – Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m hoping the contestants get clearance to the songs they want. There are a lot of great options, though. I hope they do a vid intro where they explain why they chose the songs they did.

That would be a good idea, Metta. I hope they wear 60′s clothes/hair. It would be fun.

I think if you visit MOST fansites, you will find more female than male fans. It might be the fact that women are more easily able to put their feelings about things into words. Its a generalization but its also a fact. Women are better at verbalizing what they want and what they like. Women, as a general rule, like words and are good at using them to express themselves.

If you go to the political blogs, as a general rule it has been my experience that they seem to have more men on them. I think it has a little to do with confrontation. They have the facts, they have an opinion but are afraid to put that opinion out there for fear they will stir the pot so to speak. Just my observation.

    Pretty interesting reading….

American Idol’s Little Engine That Could
    http://blogcritics.org/archives/2007/03/18/115120.php

At this time last year Hicks was beginning to amass a loyal following. His fans on the Idol forums faced harsh criticisms with attacks on his appearance and much debated perceived lack of true “Idol form”. His singing was criticized, his dancing slammed, and he was made fun of for his hair color. Sanjaya has been developing a growing fan base as well, and his fans are facing similar attacks on their favorite. It’s a real jungle out there in the world of Idol fans.

The quality upheld by Mr. Hicks that bolstered him through – confidence in himself. He faced those judges week after week, many times hearing scathing criticisms, especially from Simon Cowell. He was called everything from a drunken Dad at a wedding to a bar room act and ridiculous. Simon consistently pontificated on Taylor’s low chances at winning the show. Week after week the Soul Patrol rallied, gaining force with numbers and enthusiasm to pull Hicks to the top of the Idol ranks. Throughout every insult and bad critique, Hicks amazingly held his tongue – and smiled. Each time he responded in that way following those bad reviews, Hicks gained fans, votes, and fame.

Taylor Hicks has always reminded me of those boxers in the ring, whom no matter how hard they are hit refuse to take the knock out. The man always kept coming up swinging. Last season, I couldn’t help but hear that Rocky Balboa theme in my head watching that man. He was, and is, an inspiration. Taylor Hicks played the Idol game very well. Simon Cowell is stepping up the ante this season , demonstrating his displeasure regarding Malakar, saying in a press release that should Sanjaya win he would leave the show. Doubt that’s going to happen, but dramatic just the same.

Generalizations, smenralizations! The fans all around me at the Austin Taylor Hicks show were young and VERY young. Teen, tween, and twenty-somethings. So let me generalize and say that ALL Taylor fans are young, attractive women, because this is all I saw around me. All having a blast, mind you.

It takes all sorts to make a fanbase in my view.

    And….

These links to the music of the British invasion have been wonderful. Thanks kindly Lisa B, and MJ for gathering them in one easy link.

I really am looking forward to Tuesday night to see what this crop of AI Sixers will choose.

Nothing is impossible at Pinewood for “Duet Impossible” [TV]

Princess Productions proved nothing is impossible when they recorded à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Duet Impossibleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ for the BBC in tv 1 at Pinewood Studios in front of a live studio audience.

Westlife never sung with Roy Orbison, The Sugababes never sung with Dusty Springfield, Lulu never sung with Marvin Gaye. Until now! à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Duet Impossibleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ makes the musically impossible become possible as some of todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s biggest pop stars sing a duet with one of their all time idols.

Through the magic of modern technology, stars from yester-year make a comeback from the big gig in the sky and perform live on stage with stars of today. The result are some unique new musical collaborations featuring Roy Orbison and Westlife, Dusty Springfield and Sugababes, Marvin Gaye, Lulu, plus Lulu & McFly and a moving rendition of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Somewhere Over The Rainbowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from Eva Cassidy and Katie Melua.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Duet Impossibleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ will be shown on Christmas Eve on BBC 1 at 5:45 and is hosted by Vernon Kay.

Oh boy is THAT ever true. I had to take a hiatus from the Buffy fandom for a while because the fanwars between fans of one character or ‘ship or another were over-the-top. I’d say the online fandom is 80% female ranging from teenage to middle age. Most of the fanfiction is written by adult women.

There has been much reaction to an article regarding the San Antonio concert – again, one individual (the author of the article) who might or might not have truly been there, expressing his/her opinion.

If, however, you take the time to read actual accounts of the San Antonio concert at GC (posted prior to the article being published) you will find quite a different atmosphere at the concert.

So any generalization made from someone not attending the event pretty much means nothing.

Carry on with the British invasion…..

I hate that fucking song BUT, when Simon (who hated Clay from the moment he laid eyes on him) asked him..”what does that song mean?” and Clay said I dont know, its a British song…Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

As with the “T” man, Clay was rarely if ever dissed on Idol cause he didnt sing well. He was dissed cause Simon never liked him and thought he was a joke. The one tiem I remember Clay being trashed was when they gave him a few hours to learn that dreadful song “Vincent”. He forgot the words and IMHO, it was a blessing.

Oh how the mighty tried to make him fail especially when it began to look as if Clay would actually win the fucking thing (which of course, as was the case with Al Gore, he DID) they did a valiant effort to derail the Clay train. Somebody make me stoppppppppppppp…..

Sanjaya needs to sing something with very little band accompaniment. He can’t compete with the band and his voice gets swallowed up. I would say that he should attempt an acapella, but he’d need a lot more confidence than he has now to pull that off.

The Donovan song that LisaB posted in yesterday’s thread (the one with all the smoking) would be a good song for Sanjaya. Simple acoustic accompaniment.

Rumour has it that it was worse than that. Apparently, the producers decided the show was running too short, so they told Clay while he was in hair/make-up (25 minutes before the show aired) that they would need to change the arrangement and add an extra verse. There wasn’t time to even rehearse before the live show. And of course, this song was not his choice in the first place. Simon went on to call the song dreary (a song about suicide being dreary, imagine).

This performance is often cited as the apex of of AI producer manipulation.

i agree with the philly article, i always was confused at the references to taylor doing blue eyed soul, i always thought it was elliott doing it. and the san antonio article is the opposite of what some of you guys are reporting wtih à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The audience was predominantly female, and some of Hicksà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ most vocal fans were old enough to be his mother.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Radname, the reviewer did not dwell on the demographics of the audience. He just made mention of what he eye-balled and a brief mention at that. That does not mean every venue is the same in demographics nor that the critic was 100% right his assessment. Someone did post that last night crowd was a bit mature then Taylor’s other venues stops. Just like in Antonio had a lot more male and a much younger crowd because of the venue.

The bottomline is did the reviewer like the show and in this case, the reviewer did. If you want to take the attention away from a very positive review by harping on Taylor’s fanbase age then so be it. Yes, Taylor has a fanbase filled with mostly mature women. Some even old enough to be his grandmother. I don’t see the big deal. Their money still spends the same.LOL

IMO, whether Taylor draws a roomful of senior citizens or teens, it’s the actual review of the show that will pull in the non-fans. Not so much the crowd. And as far as I’m concerned, so far the reviews are reflecting very positively on him.

Also, Elliott does fit the blue-eye soul definition of “Blue-eyed” soul. So does Taylor..

    Okay back to Season Six..LOL

No, Clay was great on the show. I was implying that it would be clueless for Sanjaya to whisper and tiptoe his way through a song that Clay killed on the show. The song itself is pretty dumb, and it just seems like something Sanjaya would sing.

Clay was awesome with every song he sang. If you havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t been to one of his concerts, you are missing out. He is dynamic in concert. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been to 4 of them, and, planning on seeing him again this summer. That boy can saaaaaaaaaaaaaaang!!

I always try to think of the most junior high talent show song and Sanjaya delivers. Last week with “Aint no Mountain” it was just obvious.

    hasnt that already happened? http://perezhilton.com/topics/exclusives/who_wants_to_fuck_clay_aiken_20070127.php

Dingo: You know Taylor sang “Badge” in Austin. Blew the roof off the joint and it was a very sturdy roof indeed.

That is interesting about Clay and the song “Vincent”. Didn’t they pull names out of a bowl and that is the one he got? Not sure. He was not happy about it for sure. Did not realize all that went on before he ever sang it, though.

I still feel his high point S2 was “Solitaire.”

Has there been a truly memorable moment on S6 yet? Not to me. I wonder if it will happen this year. (Before this time last year we had already had “Moody’s Mood”, “Hemorrhage” and “Takin’ It to the Streets.” )

    Dingo:

I posted my review of the Austin show on Gray’s site. The high points of the evening were Badge and Goodbye Stranger. Both of those were A-fucking-MAZING! I also loved “Give Me Tonight.” It rawks live.

Yes. Clay did have some unbelievable performances that year. I always looked forward to hearing him sing during S2 and Ruben too. Loved me some Velvet Teddy Bear! :) That was a really enjoyable season.

  • AFan

    Thats interesting. Why?

Because I feel that this year has been really great for the gay community with many prominent figures comming out. I think the more the merrier. Queen Latifah, Jodie Foster etc… would really be great.

Everyone I know who loves Clay as much as I do suspected long ago that Clay was Gay. What I find more interesting is your veiled homophobia.

Actually, I’ve heard that a lot of his fans will defend to the death that Clay’s straight.
And honey, I’m one of the only males on here, and I’m a Kat fan, and not for her McTata’s. You string the pieces together, lol.

emeralgem: I would love to hear House of the Rising Sun, but I doubt anyone could do the song justice..

You know, Dolly Parton did a version of it, so maybe Lakisha or Melinda could knock it out of the park.

Apparently early versions were often sung from the female perspective and the lyrics recorded by Alan Lomax way back when are from that perspective.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_Of_The_Rising_Sun

Not sure how well you could do a 90-120 second version of HotRS though.

    Idol Concert Summary Report:

Periodically, I would like a post a summary of tour concert reports for Idols. I will start by just posting a summary for year to date. Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see how it goes from there.

Very nice, Kirsten. The more stats the better.

  • Metta

As with the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ man, Clay was rarely if ever dissed on Idol cause he didnt sing well. He was dissed cause Simon never liked him and thought he was a joke.

Simon’s problem with Taylor was his “dancing”, but Clay just straight up sang, so what was his problem with him? Also, is there any contestant this season who Simon appears also to have an irrational dislike for?

  • Metta

Because I feel that this year has been really great for the gay community with many prominent figures comming out. I think the more the merrier.

Coming out is one thing. Being outed is an entirely different matter. You were advocating Clay’s being outed.

An IDF poster reported seeing an American Idol commercial that mentioned songs by the Kinks and Rolling Stones on the upcoming show. Anyone else see it? I don’t watch anything else on Fox. (it’s IDF so it may just be made up). Maybe we’ll get some real spoilers soon.

  • koolmom

Dingo and Lisa B I remember Itchycoo Park very well, however If I had been asked to come up with the lyrics to the song without hearing it again I never could. Really kool song. I remember all this stuff from the sixties so I guess that makes me old, but there sure was some good music in there.

As for the cheesy factor you can not get much better that this–Winchester Cathedral – The New Vaudeville Band you have to get halfway through the vid as they start with another song

Rumour has it that it was worse than that. Apparently, the producers decided the show was running too short, so they told Clay while he was in hair/make-up (25 minutes before the show aired) that they would need to change the arrangement and add an extra verse. There wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t time to even rehearse before the live show. And of course, this song was not his choice in the first place. Simon went on to call the song dreary (a song about suicide being dreary, imagine).

This performance is often cited as the apex of of AI producer manipulation.

Oh, the manipulation gets even better. “Vincent” was supposedly Clay’s “pick a song out of a hat” (I think it was actually a bowl) choice and thus supposedly was a totally random selection. Poor Clay, getting a dreary song, while Kim got the uptempo “Ring of Gold” and Ruben got a Stevie classic, “Signed, Sealed, and Delivered.”

Kim Locke later revealed that there was nothing random about it. Each selected a song from a different “hat,” and all of the paper slips in the “hat” were identical.

    Good thing to know, Sugarbuns.

Totally apropos of nothing AI-related and off-topic, I got to see incredible lead singer and mandolin player Chris Thile of Nickel Creek and the newly-minted “Tensions Mountain Boys” on the Zanger stage at Cargenie Hall last night. Chris, together with Chris Eldridge (guitar), Greg Garrison (bass), Noam Pikelny (bango) and Gabe Witcher (fiddle) are phenomenal musicians and fun to watch. Chris ROCKS on that mandolin and all the “boys” are equally talented and it’s a very tight band. If you like modern bluegrass music with soul, try to catch them if you get a chance.

Now back to your regularly scheduled American Idol talk.

What is so cool is Taylor is doing a different concert in every town. Different opening songs. Different setlists for each place he plays. Everybody gets something fresh, mixed in with the songs from his CD, but, no question, something VERY good.

Maracaibo, you can find the Peter Noone comments on the last 2 posts on pg 1 today by Margaux. I loved hearing what he said about Blake.

I enjoyed seeing Clay in that clip. He did a great job with that song although I really don’t like it. skylight, you can believe whatever you want about Clay – it’s okay with me what you believe or if he is or he isn’t.

But, at one time, for a few years, I was part of an Aids Care Team and all our clients (at that time) were gay men. I can’t tell you how many of them died with their mother and/or father and some siblings not knowing they were gay. One died alone rather than tell anyone in his family. Very sad, his parents were devastated.

I also know two guys who are in their late thirties, gay and will never tell their parents or anyone outside of the gay community.

    Just sayin’ – it happens.

how do you explain the various internet interactions he’s had with people on manhunt. yes, there’s photographic evidence of this as well. you can check back to my post where i linked the perezhilton stuff. normally i would take that stuff with a grain of salt, but when there’s pictures… i’ll believe it. a few men have come out and said they had relations with clay. he has also been on gay websites which is common for many gay people who aren’t out yet. if he wasn’t gay, he wouldn’t dance around the question when the media asks. trust me, many gay men wish they were straight, if clay wasnt gay, he would say it.

  • skylight1219

pj, no one ever said Carrie Underwood was gay. Clay has had every opportunity to sue, but, he chooses to just let things run their course. He has answered those questions time after time, and, said people will believe what they want, so, he just lets them believe it. He has a higher ethics than some people.

  • skylight1219

That picture wasn’t Clay. Where were the big ears? Why would Clay pick up some guys on a website not knowing anything about these people or their background? He isn’t stupid. Perez Hilton? That says it all. Clay has said he isn’t, but, people just keep the rumors. If he was going to be with another guy, he sure as heck wouldn’t have to browse the internet to fine one.

  • hezzer19

Clay is dating Taylor. I read it at the AI boards.

skylight, please. that was so him in those pictures.
and i guess since we’re name dropping here… i happen to personally know perez. i met him a few years back when i was living in LA. this was when he was still a journalist. i have an e-mail relationship with him now but i know for a fact that someone sent him those pictures. there was no doctoring. did you see the four fingers? only clay would wear those stupid rings?
and clay has never really said he’s not gay. i remember watching larry king practically badger him about it. all he had to say was no, i’m not. this is common among many famous gay people. denying it is wrong but admiting it potentially hurts their career. it’s tough. that’s why i know for a fact if he wasn’t gay he would say it. being straight is pretty damn easy.

  • skylight1219

And, AFan, I’m telling you, those pictures WERE not Clay. How do you or Perez know they weren’t doctored? They were sent to him by an email. Some people are very computer savvy. Unless, you or Perez were there, then it is still rumors, and, someone trying to make a fast buck. Did you see the lack of big ears? Clay has ears like Dumbo, which can’t be hidden very easily. Why weren’t they in the pic? in the pix? Anyone can buy and wear those rings. So, whoever, that person was held up 4 fingers. That sure seals it for me. But, you believe what you want, via email. I will not be held accountable for spreading things which aren’t true. Too many people do this now-a-days. End of discussion.

Oh re: Clay being outed – ummm, yes he has. Has Clay actually come out? No he hasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t. Does that mean heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not gay?

    Nope.

Someone earlier tonight stated the fact that Taylor is gay. The Globe and the National Enquirer outed him too so now everyone can post all over the internet that Taylor was outed and lots of gay guys never come out. Does that mean Taylor isn’t gay? Nope. Does it mean Chris or Elliott isn’t gay? Nope.

You can say, but Chris is married, well, lots of gay men marry. You can say Elliott has a girlfriend, lots of gay guys date women, some even marry them. Taylor isn’t dating anyone. I guess he’s just as gay as Clay then. So what if he says he’s too busy with his career to settle down right now. So’s Clay.
