    First? Yay!

    Good morning. :)

ETA: Yaiks! I hope this doesn’t mean I kill this thread this early… :( Somebody else post something, quick! Lisa B? :)

Pfffttt. One of the few times I have time to blog and people sleep..even the usual early birds. Dang, I get no support around here. :( lol

Some news then. “Pimp” spot for Bucky:

Covington album best of `Idol’ bunch

Bucky Covington’s performances on American Idol last year revealed a guy graced with charisma, but offered no evidence that he would wind up making the most cohesive album to come out of the franchise yet…

    IDOL WATCH
At least Sanjaya gave us something to talk about

He started out as just another American Idol contestant, only winding up in the seventh-place dominion of also-rans Ryan Starr, Kimberly Caldwell, Anwar Robinson, Ace Young — and one notable exception, Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson. Stretch the definition of the word ”good” to its widest boundaries and Sanjaya Malakar still couldn’t find a place inside it.

And yet, over the past five weeks, the impudent 17-year-old became a sort of national punching bag. His ouster Wednesday night made headlines, had comics scrambling for material, and had everyday people buzzing around the watercooler dropping phrases that are historically reserved for Real Serious Issues:

“Thank God, almighty, free at last, we are free at last!”

“Our long national nightmare is over.”

We heard them all. But maybe this one was a little more appropriate:

“We can watch the program again without fear.”

    Hi, steve-o. :) That’s interesting, indeed.

Did that mean that Jasmine Trias would have faced Fantasia in the finale had AI not tampered with the voting results? Whoa!

  • RollTide

Even if they are working on Lakisha’s goodbye film, I don’t think that means they plan to boot her. She’s been in the bottom 3, so I could see them having one ready, and just adding to it from week to week as needed. If we are to believe what they did last week, she was next to last, so it would make sense to get her vid ready in my opinion. Although anything can happen, since Phil went from the bottom 3, 2 or 3 weeks in a row to totally safe last week.

  • http://www.myspace.com/mignonette33 purplesmile

Oh, I didn’t know that, jersey. Thanks for telling me. :) I would have posted some more links, but unfortunately, I deleted all the other news alerts I got, thinking Lisa B would be coming in any time to post hers. But I’m sure others would be posting some more links for us later on. :)

RollTide: it would make sense to get her vid ready in my opinion.

I’ve always thought myself that the goodbye videos for everyone are indeed prepared in advance and that they are, as RollTide said, just added to from week to week. After all, isn’t it that nobody (or at least just a handful of people) is supposed to know the results until results night itself?

Is Jasmine the girl from Hawaii that was getting all the Hawaiian votes, and in what place did she finish on AI? Did she make it to Top 3?

Good morning everyone. I just wanted to add something to the Blake discussion from yesterday, he also needs a tan.

Is Jasmine the girl from Hawaii that was getting all the Hawaiian votes, and in what place did she finish on AI? Did she make it to Top 3?

Yep, Jasmine’s the Hawaiian. I don’t know how long she stayed, but IMO it was TOO long. She couldn’t sing well and the flower-behind-the-ear gimmick was wearing thin.

At least Sanjaya changed his hair every week. *Miss him already*

I would think they would have an exit tape ready for ALL the contestants since they claim they do not know who is going home until the day of the elimination.

I recall reading an article from one of the previous seasons (maybe back in Season 2 or 3) where they talked about this very thing. They said that they do have an exit tape ready for every contestant, every week.

They even have contestants periodically tape those “reflecting on my time on the show” videos so they have a recent tape of that. They must do that for all at the same time or that would be a dead give away (“Say, Sanjaya, we would like to film your thoughts about what it would be liked to leave the show today. No, just put down that muffin for a few moments. You can get another one tomorrow. No, we don’t need to make a tape for Lakisha or Blake today. Yes, it is the same sort of thing we did with Haley last week and Gina the week before. Will you stop crying already! You are going to ruin the video”.)

JJ: Good morning everyone. I just wanted to add something to the Blake discussion from yesterday, he also needs a tan.

Well, if it is make recommendations for Blake day…he needs to burn every hat he owns. He should not even give them to Phil. Phil’s hairless head is preferable to any of Blake’s hats.

Paul McCartney Too Nice For American Idol

We had reported the rumors that Paul McCartney was going to be on American Idol a few months back as part of ‘Beatles Week’ on the show. Culture of mean fuels events like Virginia Tech: expert

A caustic critique by Simon Cowell on American Idol, the latest victim voted out on Survivor and even the rants of hockey analyst Don Cherry are leading to a poisonous atmosphere that fuels events like last week’s shooting at Virginia Tech, says an international bullying expert.

There is a shift to a “culture of mean,” says Barbara Coloroso, and she believes today’s youth are swimming in it…

“I think we are experiencing something amiss culturally where the TV shows if you turn them on and people are laughing at one another’s pain,” said Coloroso.

“Enjoying seeing someone kicked off the island, enjoying seeing someone go down in flames on American Idol, satire not being used but sarcasm. If you turn on radio talk … it’s mean and cruel.”

American Idol to flex power as charity fundraiser

“American Idol,” the TV singing television talent show that turned into a U.S. cultural phenomenon, flexes its muscles this week as a charity fund-raiser expected to bring in millions of dollars for young people in Africa and the United States.

“Idol Gives Back” — a two-night special starting on Tuesday — is thought to be the first venture by an American TV reality show into the business of mass fund-raising. It will combine the regular contest and results show with skits, viewer and business donations and performances by former “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson, Celine Dion, Gwen Stefani and others.

“The reach and appeal of ‘American Idol’ is so massive that the impact could be huge,” said Patty Williamson, an instructor at the School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts in Michigan.

“It’s also an interesting juxtaposition for ‘American Idol,’ which isn’t known for its compassion when it comes to criticism and making fun of contestants on national television,” Williamson said.

    Katharine McPhee
    Artist: KATHARINE McPHEE

    (RCA/Sony BMG)

    Reviewer: JO TIMBUONG

I CAN safely say that Katharine McPheeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s debut self-titled album is forgettable. Sure, the runner-up in last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s American Idol has a set of pipes but the overall feel of this album is just so bland that you may not want to listen to it more than once.

McPhee combines pop, dance and a lot of light and easy tunes. She is very much the Jill of all trades here but unfortunately a mistress of none. Though she can be pretty good on the lighter tunes, she fails to mesmerise and sometimes turns a promising number into a boring and draggy one.

    SEE HERE :

    http://music.aol.com/feature/grammy/trivia_misses

SCROLL DOWN AND LOOK AT THE SLIDE à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ GRAMMY AWARDS HITS AND MISSES.

There You will an astounding array of artists they have failed to honor and an equally astounding number they have honored who immediately fizzled.

    Here’s a slide worth noticing :

When you consider the contributions Jimi Hendrix, the Beach Boys, Diana Ross, the Doors, Neil Young, Queen and Led Zeppelin have made to popular music, it’s natural to assume they’re all Grammy winners. Yet none of these seminal artists has won even one Grammy award, unless you count a lifetime achievement award given to Led Zeppelin in 2005. It was only, um, 25 years after they’d broken up.

    Also, consider this …

For some, it’s a blessing. For others, it’s a curse. It’s the infamous hex of the Best New Artist Grammy award. Although the likes of Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey have escaped its grasp, a longer list of once-rising stars — including Paula Cole, Shelby Lynne, Arrested Development, Jody Watley and (once again!) Milli Vanilli — saw their careers spiral downwards soon after winning this prize.

    ————————-
BTW, whatever happened to that other best new artists Grammy winner — THE STARLAND VOCAL BAND ? I’ve never heard from them since AFTERNOON DELIGHT.

The Grammy’s have had a lot of “Got-It-Right’s” and just as many head shaking, head spinning “No-They-Didn’t's!”.

However, I wrote yesterday and will say again today: If you get a Grammy nomination, or if you are lucky enough to win, whether you are a deserving artist or not, you forever get to use the phrase “Grammy Nominated” or “Grammy Winning” in front of your name. Most people consider this a good thing no matter what the track record of those awards have been in the past.

Hey guys, I am a longtime lurker here at MJ’s but really feel the need to respond to this Rickey Hoggarth crap. I can see people wondering about the validity of the votes in years past simply because many times popular people have been voted off on American Idol. The thing is his examples of people being kicked off because of voter manipulation are just insane. Nikki McKibbon (hell I think I was the only person I knew that liked Nikki) certainly overstayed her welcome. Jasmine Trias bested George Huff, Latoya London and Jennifer Hudson, yet he pulls that one out of his hat. Oh yeah, lets call the FCC or somebody on that travesty (where’s the rolls eye emoticon?). Finally even though I am still mourning the ouster of Sanjaya, does anyone think that he should have lasted much longer? I think someone is pulling ole Rickey’s chain. ‘Cause this crap is laughable.

Kirsten, I thought you were suggesting Blake blow up TPTB.

Music mogul SIMON COWELL’s London home was ransacked while the star was away in America.
The American Idol judge is devastated after thieves raided the Holland Park pad, making off with jewellery, silver, and electrical equipment.
Cowell has been branded “unwise” by police after he left his house keys with building constructors who were refurbishing his GBP6 million ($11.7 million) house.
Local police who investigated the crime say, “It was an unwise decision to say the least. You wouldn’t believe some of the things Mr Cowell had accumulated over the years that the thieves took a fancy to.”
A source tells British newspaper The Daily Express, “What has happened in similar cases is that someone copied the main key. I’m sure the builders would have been very careful about who had access, but it’s not always easy when a number of sub-contractors are coming in and out of the place.

Been away from the computer a while, so I don’t know what’s been posted over recent days.
But I do want to add another little prop for LaKisha.
I thought she handled herself beautifully during the last elimination round, holding and comforting Sanjaya in a very sweet way. And watching the clip on “Oprah,” her reaction to being in the bottom three was very genuine.
I hope to heaven this talented gal will step up with something wonderful on Tuesday night. She clearly has the vocal talent, and the drive, to go further. Inspirational songs should be a good theme for her, given her strong religious faith.

I hope she’s getting some solid advice from the AI music staff about what could really knock ‘em dead. What I’d dearly love her to do is something on the order of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” That song has the kind of depth she could delve into, and she could make the tune her own. She’s not Aretha, not Whitney, but has a very distinctive voice that deserves more of a hearing.
Other possibilities: “What the World Need Now”“Lord Lift Us Up Where We Belong” (or whatever it’s called) — “You’ve Got a Friend”…..Or (I agree with WV Fan) “Imagine”

Go LaKisha! You can do it girlfriend!

Okay, just read Ricky’s blog, and I’m really not gonna comment except for one thing:

At this point in the competition, NO ONE is safe. Period. That is why the core fanbase HAS to vote and not becoming lazy, and why the contestants themselves have to give the BEST performance from week to week to win the casual voters’ votes.

AI may very well be planning a “diva shocker” early exit, but if it’s Lakisha, that would not be surprising to me at all. She’s been really slipping over the past few weeks. Last week, she just finally slipped enough to land in the bottom 3. Yeah, it would probably be shocking to the “rest” of America, as they probably expect Phil and/or Chris to at least go before Lakisha does, but I can almost guarantee you that at least one of those guys will make the top 4. It’s just how the show works, the majority of the time.

IMO, this week is gonna be a battle between Chris and Lakisha for that 6th place slot. Phil too, unless he gives another great performance to keep him safe again. He’s the one who most needs to pull out a great performance from week to week to win the casual vote.

AND the clubs of South Beach, just a short flight away – and we all know that apparently Blake is a bad boy, so no doubt he likes to go clubbing. Some of the best in the US in South Beach! ;)

No. No. I was suggesting that he BE Guy Fawkes. Just build a bonfire suitable for a Bonfire Night (to celebrate the capture of Guy Fawkes). There is generally fire works as well. Celebrated November 5th.

What are you waiting for, Blake?

At least one Off-shore gambling site thinks that he may be the next boot:

“Blake Lewis could be this week’s surprise elimination in our opinion. His “solitary” ride into the competition has kept him well off the radar. However he ended up among the least vote getters last week, something that makes more than one think he’s been overrated all along.”

    http://www.theonlinewire.com/articleView.aspx?ID=2644

Although, his odds are currently sitting at 800. Chris is at 185, Phil at 145 and Lakisha at 200. Sanjaya was at 475 last Monday and went down to -120 on Wednesday morning.

Bobbi, then I suppose I can wait 5 or so more weeks. ;)

I agree about being him overrated. Blake’s somewhat of a mystery to me – I don’t get the appeal he has to women – teenagers, I can see, because he’s funky and hip and cute, though he’s not goodlooking at all. However, that’s true of Timberlake – the ‘not goodlooking at all’ part – and look at his appeal!

Blake has a pleasant voice but it doesn’t stand out, and if I heard it without seeing him I wouldn’t be able to say, “Hey, that’s BLAKE!” (I wouldn’t rcognize ANY of the guys’ voices without seeing them this year except Sanjaya’s though!) :)

Nothing beats the clubs of South Beach. Sawry. ;)

And in MY opinion, Blake is not overrated in the least. In fact, he’s only living up to the hype. His “appeal” to me is not his looks anyway. When I first starting liking him on the show, it had nothing to do with his being “cute.” It was solely because of his voice and performance style. Newsflash – people like Blake because his style is fresh and new to not only American Idol but the mainstream music scene in general.

And that’s all I have to say about that.

    Blake for the win!

ETA: And the “Timberlake wannabe” is Chris R, not Blake.

I see Blake’s appeal, but then he’s appealing to me. That sort of stuff is subjective. I would definitely recognize his voice, too. :) Of course, I’ve listened to his downloads repeatedly.

  • WVFan

I agree foxydonna that Bucky’s new cd is great! I absolutely love It Ain’t NO Thing and Hometown. I too can see Bo putting ut an album like this. Bo will always be my favorite. Constantine was invited to the press corps dinner in his season of AI. I always wondered how the idols fit into that scenario, but big strings can be pulled by AI apparently. Re. Rickys assertion of Sanjaya not being in the bottom, not sure I buy that. Too many things come into play in voting, and would AI really risk a huge takedown if that came out with their ratings on the slide anyway?

  • radname

    And the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Timberlake wannabeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is Chris R, not Blake.

I know that. Blake is cute. Timberlake is not cute. ChrisR is cuter than both. None of them are appealing at all to me.

  • WVFan

Jasmine Trias made it to top 3 in her season. She really only had one good song, and that was Natalie Cole ballad. The week she was eliminated was the week the judges and Clive pick songs for the top 3 plus the idol picks one. Paula got to pick for Jasmine and picked an old jazz song with scatting. How many teenagers have ever heard scatting? It was obvious they were trying to get her off. Jasmine’s never done well in the USA but is big in the Phillipines, etc.

I agree Carrie looks way tooo thin. She was only a size 6 to begin with and didnt need weight loss. She doesnt even fill out her bodice’s anymore and she had a real good figure before. I know shes vegetarian but the girl needs to eat something to put some weight on. You would think her family would be worried.

Good thing Chris R is cute. That’s about all he’s got going for him. Sorry. I just don’t like the guy’s voice. But he seems like a nice guy.

And as I said, my like of Blake is not contingent on whether or not I think he’s cute. That may be the appeal for some, but it REALLY irks me when people say “I don’t get the appeal, he’s not cute at all.” His appeal to me is his voice and his style, both musical and personal. NOT that he is or isn’t cute (and to me, he may not be the most traditionally cute guy ever, but there are times when he’s just flat out dead sexy.).

  • pj

Sarah, I would never back a contestant on looks alone either. There are lots of different factors that come to play.

I suppose Jared was the “hottest” guy this year, but he didn’t appeal to me as a contestant at all.

  • Desdemona

I don’t like Chris R’s voice either – not at all! In fact, it grates on my nerves, he is so nasally. Appeal, to me, is not all about cute, and I don’t believe I said that. I’m just not seeing anything that sets Blake above the others in voice either, so coupled with his looks, he does nothing for me. I understand I’m in the minority here, but it is my opinion.

It wasn’t Taylor’s looks that won me over last year either, but his voice just grabbed me and never let go. This year, I can’t stand Phil’s looks, but I do think he has the best voice of all the guys, and “sometimes” his personality doesn’t bug me, but it usually does. LOL

  • chewsday

    Desdemona:

I agree with you about Blake. I don’t get the attraction. To me, he’s too short, has beady little eyes and a strange, crooked mouth when he sings. And about the singing: I don’t think he has a great or strong or recognizable voice at all. Of course neither do any of the other guys left in the competition this year. ( And none of them appeal to me any more than he does.) Just my .02.

  • Desdemona

Thank, you chewsday. I’m really not trying to be confrontational.

  • Kirsten

I’ve been thinking about Ricky’s vote order and people getting “claused”. I’m not saying I believe it, because it seems like they are taking a chance on killing the Golden Goose. On the other hand, Nixon got involved in Watergate, Napolean invaded Russia and ER crashed a helicopter on top of their Chief Surgeon…so arrogant people can do some pretty stupid things.

I’ve been reading both sides of the debate and can offer some plausible explanations to some of the objections. This is because I love seeing both sides of a debate. In no way am I saying that I believe Sanjaya got robbed:

    1) Why boot Sanjaya now? Why not boot him earlier?

Possible Reason: TPTB quickly realized that he was a buzz generator. Buzz is good for the show. If people are talking about it at the water cooler, others might tune in just to find out what is going on. He was helping the show before; no reason to boot him earlier.

But he was a threat their Idol Gives Back show. I believe that this week is intended to win them an Emmy (if Wednesday’s episode is not one of the two episodes they submit to the Emmy organization for consideration, I will eat one of Blake’s hats). It seemed pretty obvious last year that they REALLY wanted to win one. How are they supposed to be taken seriously with “that joke” running around? Will the stuffy Emmy organization see all your good work to aid the suffering children or will they think you are just a new version of the Gong Show? Plus, they want the buzz focused on AI and how wonderful they are. Not on that kid with the goofy hair.

    2) Why not save Chosen Ones like Sabrina and Chris D?

I suspect (from the list of people booted before their time that Ricky has posted) that they use the “clause” to boot people they do not like rather than to keep people they do like. If Sabrina cannot manage to get enough votes to survive past the final 16 on her own, they would likely have to save her again and again. That creates a pattern that looks bad.

As for Chris, if they didn’t think that he had the votes to win, 4th was not a bad spot to go out. Going out 4th allows you an entire AI press cycle for yourself. Third is pretty much the worse spot because you over-shadowed by all the press about the final 2 and you have to cut your press tour short to get your butt back to LA to practice for the Finale. Going out 4th allowed him to get a lot of extra press for being the shock boot AND as an added bonus, he never had to sing a cheesy coronation song.

    3) Why don’t they boot off people they hate, like Taylor or Clay?

I think that they still statistically have to back up their boot. Either the person-booted-before-their-time must be within some small margin of being the bottom person or there must be some statistical way to back up the boot. For instance, Lakisha may have been last if they kept all the vote. Blake may have been last if they threw out votes from people who voted more than 100 times (just an example…I’m just using the “Bottom 3″ in this example…not trying to take on Team Plaid so put down the pitchforks). But, if they threw away everybody who voted more than 8 times, Sanjaya got the boot (the theoretical Blake voters consisting of a lot of people who vote a few times and a few people who voted a 100 times….the majority of Sanjaya’s theoretical voters voting between 8 and 100 times).

Nigel has said that Clay led his season by a wide margin until the finale, so there may have been no statistical way to “clause” him.

Of course, the counter argument to all of this is that AI would be stupid to do this, they don’t care who really wins because the show is where they make all their money and Sanjaya was really bad this week (and not in the “so bad it’s good” way).

  • LB2

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get the appeal he has to women

I think it’s just people have different tastes. I think he’s pretty cute but above all, I just appreciate his musical curiosity. I like that his voice would work on all of my favorite songs. And that makes him hot to me.

I know you’re not trying to be confrontational, Desdemona; it never came off that way to me. I think it’s just that when people preface their opinions with “I don’t get…,” it’s like an invitation for an explanation but it’s not one that will ever satisfy us or change our minds. I used to do that too until I realized that when I start my sentences that way, someone will take the opportunity “to make me get it” when I really won’t be swayed no matter what.

  • vegasdee

    Okay, gotcha, LB2! :) Thanks. I’ll try not to use “I don’t get….” again.

Have got to go now. Appreciate your post.

  • pj

Kirsten, good points, especially about the Emmy.

However throwing out votes from people who voted more than 8 or 100 times would be fraudulant. They encourage multiple voting.

Also, what about the fact that they probably know Ricky has been claiming voting order all season and they haven’t tried to stop him? Knowing he’s doing that, I would think TPTB would either take action against him if he’s right or be on they’re best behavior if they can’t legally stop him. It’s also possiblel they could be feeding him misinformation.

  • pj

Sigh. “they’re” should be “their”… I can’t edit for some reason.

  • pj

Des, I didn’t think you were being confrontational either, actually. I was just responding. :)

  • MaryS-NJ

    A couple random things:

FoxyDonna, if you’re still here, I read your recaps on your blog today and brought this over because I think it’s interesting (I hope you and our fellow MJers don’t mind):

…As I was watching Kelly’s “I Surrender,” I suddenly realized what’s missing for me from season six – passion. I haven’t seen one spark of passion or real emotion from any of the people in this group, and thus, so far at least, no one has evoked the “tear factor” in me… I can’t make any kind of emotional connection, and it’s killing me!…

I agree SO much with this. I’m feeling detached from this season and it’s a lack of emotional connectedness or as you say “passion” in most of the contestants that I see/feel. That’s not to say they aren’t good singers or aren’t entertaining because they all have their talent, and I don’t know if they were chosen specifically because they were not likely to cause extremely… over-invested fans or it happened by chance, BUT even for my favorite, I can’t get up any sense of enthusiasm to vote. Maybe that’s not a bad thing if it means the money I would have spent on time for my GoPhone, tickets to the PopTarts tour and whatnot, stays in my debit card, but it does sort of feel a little… lacking?

Also, I think this season has become all business. It feels like after last season and 8 out of 10 finalists getting record deals, they don’t even care to pretend that the win matters. If their favorite doesn’t win, they’ll sign him/her anyway. The PTB are pretty transparent about what their expectations are, and the pretense that this show is about the contestants has pretty much been abandoned in favor of cross-marketing, co-marketing, product placement and commercialism. And by the way, I’m cynical enough to believe Idol Give Back is intended to mitigate some of the overt commericialism while gaining huge ratings and Emmy buzz due to all the stars participating.

Somebody posted a comment (can’t remember if it was here or a different blog) that a DJ once said that radio is a vehicle for delivering commercials, occasionally interrupted by music. American Idol is a vehicle for delivering commericals, occasionally interrupted by singing. I don’t know if it’s always been this way or just recently, but that also seems to have replaced the passion. It’s like the contestants are something of an afterthought.

    Moving right along…

    3) Why don’t they boot off people they hate, like Taylor or Clay?

I think that they still statistically have to back up their boot. Either the person-booted-before-their-time must be within some small margin of being the bottom person or there must be some statistical way to back up the boot.

Exactly. I didn’t season 2 so I can’t comment on Clay, but it seems to me that in order for them to clause someone without it looking suspicious, there would have to be plausibility. I personally think Sanjaya was bad enough this week, without being entertaining, that booting him would look appropriate not suspicious assuming what Ricky says is true (although I’m not convinced that Sanjaya was “claused”).

IMO, Taylor had one really bad performance – Country week – and two or so that were so-so and he never hit the seal. Those were the only weeks when he could have been claused on the basis of performance if they were going to – but he was never in the bottom 3. If they had booted him, there would have been a backlash. Plus, I don’t think the PTB ever seriously thought he would win until the night Chris was booted. At that point it would have been impossible to boot Taylor without it looking suspicious, unless they thought they could send him home top 3 and hope that Katharine (who I think they wanted in the final) would beat Elliott (who they didn’t seem to want to win – for whatever reason).

  • Kirsten

PJ: Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s also possiblel they could be feeding him misinformation.

I think that could very well be true.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Edited because I’m not going to continue this.

  • Ladybug

I had posted some thoughts on MJ’s thread about the possible sending home of the person who did not receive the lowest number of votes.

The only possibility, which you touch on above, Kirsten, is if the bottom group is very close in voting margins. Manipulation would be less likely to be questioned, or even detected, in such a case.

I still have my doubts, though, that any hanky panky from TPTB, is done with regards to actual vote totals. Perhaps I am still too trusting in that regard, because heaven knows they eff around with everything else on that show!

I think if this wasn’t a competition, we’d hear a lot more from Blake it terms of originality, he already has unique takes on the songs, but i have a feeling since the top 12 week he’s been holding back some. It’ll be interesting to see what type of music he makes after Idol is over with.

Agreed with so much of your post, Mary S, for me “the thrill is gone” for American idol. Some weeks I think I hang on waiting for someone or something to strike me, to make me care, feel something, make me do something, other than daydream and wish the judges would just shut up. I don’t want to be sold Gwen’s or J lo’s already hyped cds, eat American idol ice cream or chuckle at the lame jokes from various sitcom actor and celebrities who want to hawk their shows, their clothing lines or whatever. I want to hear people singing real songs and be entertained. and I want to know WHO I am rooting for, something that is lacking this season.
I want to care about someone like Clay, and Elliott, and Bo, and Kelly and George and Taylor. I want to root for Jennifer, and Tasia, and even Nikki and Jasmine, and John Stevens. I want to root for Blake or Sanje or Kiki, to vote like crazy and buy that stupid go phone, to worry when my fav does poorly! but all I feel is meh

I think if this wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a competition, weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d hear a lot more from Blake it terms of originality, he already has unique takes on the songs, but i have a feeling since the top 12 week heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been holding back some. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll be interesting to see what type of music he makes after Idol is over with.

Radname, I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I totally agree with you.

I posted something about this in another thread – but I think since he got pretty much trashed for his arrangement of “You Keep Me Hanging On,” he’s definitely been holding back and playing by the unwritten ‘rules’, because it IS a competition, and one where he’s not allowed to play his original stuff.

He definitely has a very cool, fresh musical style, and is one of the most musically interesting contestants this show has ever seen. If his prior stuff is any indication, he’s going to make a really great album… and I can’t wait to get it.

  • pj

Sarah, I agree that Blake is probably the most unique contestant on the show right now, which is one of the reasons I like him. I’m not saying he’s going to change the face of the music industry or is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but he’s different and quirky and I likey.

One thing that Blake excels at is song selection. Picking “Love Song” was pure genius. Who else has done the Cure? Or Keane? Or Jamiroquai? With Blake, you never know what he’s going to pull out of one if his 300 hats.

However, I don’t know that he’s been holding back since the “You Keep Me Hanging On” trashing. He rearranged TOTS and that was after YKMHO. I just think themes are somewhat limiting. He already is getting some criticism for “When the Stars Go Blue” not being country enough.

I think Blake also excels at tapping into the songs and delivering performances that reflect him as an artist, no matter what the theme.

He’s definitely the top guy. Phil has a nice voice, but has had some vocal problems and lacks style. Chris R thinks nasally is a type of singing. Nuff said.

  • sammy

I loved Blake’s arrangement of “You Keep Me Hanging On”. He put a today sound to an old (tired) song. Of course, they get criticized for changing a song and criticized for not making it their own. Very inconsistent on the judging. Hard to know what they do want.

  • emeralgem

    ___________________________

One thing for certain, as I have stated before you can always count on the judges being consistantly inconsistant.. especially Simon.
But if they are there, in part, to manipulate the voting public, what else can we expect?

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not saying heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to change the face of the music industry or is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s different and quirky and I likey.

Oh I’m not trying to say that either. Just that he’s probably the most musically interesting, not to mention current, contestant the show has seen. He’s definitely not the most original artist on the music scene these days, and he has a long way to go before he could ever be considered a force in the industry. I just think he has major potential to make a pretty big splash on the current music scene.

Maybe people don’t like his style because they don’t like current sounding music? I dunno. I’m not saying that’s wrong… I like pretty much all kinds of music. But I’m not just gonna write a guy off because he doesn’t have a perfect voice or because he’s not traditionally cute if his musical style interests and intrigues me.

I’m not speaking for anyone, but I’m guessing that the “I don’t get Blake” comments come from a) wanting the person with the best voice to win AI (and I’ll never argue that Blake has the best voice this season, because I freely admit that he doesn’t) or b) not liking his musical style. Because I don’t see how “cuteness” or tattoos or hats or personal style have anything to do with his voice or musical style. As I’ve said before, I’m sure there are people who only like him because they think he is cute, but I bet he has just as many fans, if not more, who like him for his musical creativity and style.

Anyway, I think I’m beating a dead horse here, so I’ll shut up.

  • JJ

I don’t think it really matters why people, like me, don’t like Blake. What matters is some people like him and some people don’t. Everyone will have their own reasons either way, and neither is wrong. (FYI, insert any artists name above)

  • pj

Oh Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not trying to say that either. Just that heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s probably the most musically interesting, not to mention current, contestant the show has seen.

Oh, I know you weren’t trying to say that. I just felt the need to clairfy because I don’t think such accolades apply to any AI contesant, past or present. Maybe 20 years from now one of them will be so deserving, but who knows?

So do I, daisy. So do I. Looking on the bright side, my Husband likes me being less “invested” so I guess that’s good, huh? :happy_tb:

I’m not big on speculating about the future, but I’d be willing to bet that if American Idol loses it’s goodwill, it will start to lose the interest of the kind of fans that buy the Idol products that seem to be popping up all over the place.

  • MaryS-NJ

Sorry for the off-topicness of this, but Happy Earth Day, everybody.

Here’s a little Earth Day music to celebrate by. Enjoy!

  • Metta

    Hi Everyone,

I’ve been waylaid with a bad cold ever since I got back home from NY. Thank God it held off til after the concert.

MaryS – Thanks for that link. It’s one of very fave songs. Joni Mitchell is great. And Canadian, too! :)

  • MaryS-NJ

    Metta,

I’m sorry to hear you’re sick, and I hope you’re feeling better soon. I’m happy to share the link. I love Joni Mitchell!

  • maracaibo

I will just say that in the end whether he wins or not Blake will be one of the most successful contestants from this Season. I am alrady anticipating his record. From his PRE AI recording I love “She Loves the Way”, Dumpty Humpty and Jealousy. They are awesome.
HE has a great modern style, very hip. Some of his songs remind of Jason Mraz and Maroon 5.

By the way have any of you heard the new song from maroon 5 “Makes Me WOnder”> It’s awesome. I bet Blake likes it. I can see him making music like that. JMHO.

  • Metta

    Thanks, MaryS.

Anyone wanna chat? Come on in.

JJ – if it doesn’t matter why people DON’T like him, why are his fans always asked to explain why they DO? (I’m not saying that you personally have asked that question, but I have been specifically asked that exact question by people here.)

Both sides are fair game, I thought.

  • sammy

I really like “She Loves the Way” performed by Blake 10/2006.

I’ve never asked, and you can insert Taylor above as well.

Here’s a review of Kelly Clarksons new single by Rodney Ho of the Atlanta Journal:

4/22: Kelly’s single racing up charts
Permalink By: Rodney Ho | 5:34PM EST, April 22, 2007
Kelly Clarksonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s new single à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Never Againà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has been out less than a week and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s already No. 24 on the top 40 charts, whichs tells you how hungry stations are for something fresh and interesting. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve listened to the song three times. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a bit edgy and doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really resonate to me the way à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Since U Been Goneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ did. But ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s much better than a lot of the gunk on the top 40 charts the moment. Evanescence would be proud.

  • emeralgem

Sarah, please know that just because I say your boy needs some colagen doesn’t mean that I question why you or any of his fans like him..
And I also agree he has a very unique style and will most probably be mainstream, whatever that is..
For me, I’m just NOT into his style of music and don’t think he’s that GREAT.. Just chalk it up to me being an OLD woman and NOT being able to relate to what is referred to, for the most part, as currently HIP..

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been waylaid with a bad cold ever since I got back home from NY.

So is “bad cold” code for HOT JJ kicked my ass?

  • sexygirl

So is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“bad coldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ code for HOT JJ kicked my ass?

No, it’s code word for dancing her ASS off at the Beacon right after the BUTT KICKING of the century was called a draw…LOL

  • Metta

So is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“bad coldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ code for HOT JJ kicked my ass?

Actually, it’s code for “JJ’s a$$ was kicked but, since she’s a vampire, we haven’t heard the last of her – and Dave is tepid on his best day.” That’s what it’s code for.

Metta hope you get to feeling better…Could it be allergy?
Allergies are bothering me causing my ear to act up again..

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Sarah, please know that just because I say your boy needs some colagen doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t mean that I question why you or any of his fans like him..

Em, that’s not what I meant at all. And I wasn’t referring specifically to you at all. :)

I’m just saying that it goes both ways. If it doesn’t matter why people DON’T like Blake, it doesn’t matter why they DO either. And I’ve been specifically asked to explain his appeal and why I like him (not by you). My question is what is the point of that if the person doesn’t understand it, and doesn’t have any interest in understanding it, anyway?

To me, as well as many of his fans, his appeal (the reason we like him) has nothing to do with whether or not he needs collagen, whether or not we like his hats and tattoos, or whether we think he’s cute. It’s *mostly* about his music to a lot of us. ;)

I understand if you don’t like the style. But when the majority of the negative comments basically accuse his fans of only being fans because we think he’s “cute” and then follow that up by saying “and he’s not that cute anyway”, I just get irked. I’m sorry if I’m being too sensitive about it. Seriously. I mean that in all honesty and earnestness.

  • Ladybug

It has been a little quiet on mj’s today.

My .02 regarding Blake. He has always appealed to me this year because he genuinely seems to be enjoying himself on the show. I like his personal style, too. Quirky and different.

He is by no means a great talent, but I have enjoyed him on this mostly boring year.

I would not mind his winning the whole thing at all. Nor would I mind anyone else, save for Phil and Chris R, winning it either. I am not voting and won’t this year at all, so I cannot complain about who does or does not win in the end.

Tuning in for the entertainment and occasional knockout performance and Blake has offered some true entertainment this year. (Still waiting for the knockout.)

  • Metta

emeralgem – Thank you :) and you’re right, it could be allergies. My asthma was bothering me a bit on Friday. Had a terrible coughing fit at the airport on Saturday. Thought they wouldn’t let me board the plane. Feeling better now, though. I guess kicking JJ’s a$$ took more out of me than I anticipated ;)

  • madaboutu

So today is love or hate Blake day essentially. Sanjaya is gone and so we move on. :) I just got home to an angsty cellcert on the BB. Connection made tho and all right with the world. Not sure technology is so great for humans.

  • Linny

Thank you Mary for the Joni Mitchell. Oh, gawd – takes me back such a long ways. My favorite “A Case of You!!” – I could drink a case of you, darlin, and I would still be on my feet!! I so remember being obsessively in love and feeling that song down into my gut! Sweet memories!

  • Metta

Here’s a vid of Tay’s encore at The Beacon. But check it out, just when you think he’s gone, he comes back out again. After the concert, Brian Less told a Boogie Boarder that Taylor has never done that before. Dude didn’t want to leave the stage. LOL

  • MaryS-NJ

Thank you Mary for the Joni Mitchell.

You’re welcome Linny. Her music never gets old.

It’s funny. I remember when Big Yellow Taxi came out I was around 8 years old. I heard it on the radio and thought the lyrics were “The cave paradise put up a parking lot.” I kept trying to imagine what a cave paradise would look like and why they would need a parking lot. I eventually figured it was something like the Flintstones. :laugh_tb:

  • cochem

    yes the 1st time…

  • Metta

Oooh, I like Boz Scaggs. He came out with a comeback cd several years ago called “Dig”. I thought it was really good, but it came and went unnoticed.

  • Metta

Sammy – The sound was not great on that vid – It does capture the energy of the last minutes of the show, tho.

Cochem – Seems like tonight’s show was short – only an hour – was it at a casino?

  • cochem

    mad,
I didn’t have a problem getting on…they are in the questions thread now…

    sammy,
He was singing, the crowd was singing..

  • madaboutu

Thanks cochem…………boohoo. I can only get the main page and nothing to click on to get into the concert threads or any other. Thanks anyway.

  • cochem

not in a casino..he did 14 songs total…not much tagging…the cellcert didn’t connect until 3rd song about 910pm and ended just after 10…

  • Sagie

Amusing note on The Apprentice, Trump was asking the past contestants on which of the two remaining people he should hire. One guy said he had been doing a lot of thinking about that and said…. “there is a young man named Sanjaya that I hear is looking for a job, I think you should hire him!

    haha

    That’s funny, Sagie. :)

There should never ever be any questioning here of why somebody likes an Idol–to each his own. On the other hand, this is a place where folks can declare their DISLIKE of an Idol without fans of that Idol becoming defensive.

I think the the key here is to not make it personal.

Starting off a post with “I don’t get why…” is not a good idea, because what you’ll get afterward is a ton of posts from peeps explaining exactly WHY they like the Idol in question…and it all becomes very tedious, don’t you think?

In fact I think we’ve beat this dead horse (Blake Sux/Why I love Blake) bloody. So let’s move on, shall we? Thank you.
