American Idol Contestant Draws Presidential Attention

During a radio call-in on WOKQ-FM, Sen. Hillary Clinton was asked what the United States can do about Malakar, the television show’s underdog candidate who critics say lacks any shred of talent.

“That’s the best question I’ve been asked in a long time,” Clinton said. “Well, you know, people can vote for whomever they want. That’s true in my election, and it’s true on ‘American Idol.”‘

J.Lo’s Nod To Scientology On American Idol?

Stunning singer-actress Jennifer Lopez appears to have referred to one of the Church of Scientology’s tenets, during her guest appearance on American Idol as a mentor to the contestants.

In response to a question from American Idol host Ryan Seacrest about judge Simon Cowell’s harsh judging of contestants, nurturing Jennifer scoffed at such harshness, telling Ryan that she believed that “concentrating on the rightness brings more rightness.”

So what’s the connection to the Church of Scientology? L. Ron Hubbard penned an essay on May 23, 1971, titled “Recognition of Rightness of the Being.”

If you’ve been watching American Idol Rewind….Tamyra just got voted off of season 1.

Tamyra, You are Eliminated This Week

And this of course, the elimination that firmly put American Idol on the map. Tamyra Gray, after an impressive à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹House is Not a Homeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ performance the week before, sings an awful à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹New Attitudeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ and a hoarse à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Feel the Fireà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢, and is shockingly eliminated in the Top 4. She was singer #1 too à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s how powerful that elimination indicator is.

If youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been watching American Idol Rewindà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.Tamyra just got voted off of season 1.

And thus began AI’s love of elimination “shockers” to the tune of at least one per year!

What’s interesting though is that what I may consider a “shocker” (my favorite being voted off) will probably be completely different from what others consider a “shocker” (THEIR favorite being voted off). If you go to the scary site after an elimination conspiracy theories abound – for EVERY contestant eliminated.

    Sanks for the articles, Steve!

American Idol à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Sanjaya Fans Upset Over No Sanjaya Day In His Hometown

In the biggest American Idol snub since Governor Schwarzenegger didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t meet with Katharine McPhee, Sanjayaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hometown of Federal Way, Washington appears to have little to no interest in recognizing the popular American Idol finalist with his own day.

    AMERICA’S SWEETHEART
HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR BY DAY, ‘IDOL’ STAR BY NIGHT

April 15, 2007 — She’s the only female “American Idol” contestant who goes home after singing and does her homework. Seventeen-year-old Jordin Sparks gave up school to embark on the most ambitious journey of her life. The Staten Island native who was raised in Glendale, Ariz., is capitalizing on the talents she developed while singing with the Valley Youth Center in Phoenix.

steve-o, you did great! I have to run but Taylor at the Borgata was a lot of fun last night. More subdued than at the Starland, but more energetic as the show went on. He sang alot of originals including Soul Thing, My Friend, The Deal and Hell of a Day. MaryS and I had a couple of up close moments with Loren Gold, Brian Gallagher and Brian Less one!!eleven1!. (just passing moments, nothing too exciting). We had a great dinner to begin with AND I won $15! (Woo Hoo!)

Morning all! Jersey, I know you’re busy this morning but thanks again for driving to AC and for the comaradarie last night!

I’m too tired to give an extensive recap at this point but Taylor gave a great show at the Borgata. He was more relaxed – different from the more intense (“unleashed”) concert at the Starland Ballroom. Taylor had a very different set list and I love how he keeps it fresh by doing something different each time. Oh, and he was cracking jokes. We did see Loren, Brian and Brian standing by the doors of the Music Room after the show. Jersey thought at least one of them was a decoy because the security guard would peek out every now and then to see the people standing there, frown and go back inside. heh. We also saw Loren walking through the casino at one point.

Dinner was lovely, the weather held out for the most part, and sadly, unlike jersey (who won), I lost 15 Dollars. Oh well. That’s why I don’t normally gamble. :) Anyway, after two shows it confirms for me that Taylor Hicks is fantastic singer, musician and entertainer!

  • IGetCranked

I thought the contestants didn’t get their own day until they reached the top three? I had never crossed my mind about Katherine not meeting her governor! @_@ She probably had the worst visit back home than any contestant ever.

  • LB2

Watching the Tamyra elimination clip, it’s funny to see how many predictions the judges made about her future and yet, she ultimately never became the superstar they said she would be. It’s also weird to see how Simon has become completely jaded and cynical over the years – he was mean back then but you could sense he cared and was trying to be helpful to all of them. In the past two seasons, he only seems to care (and be constructive) about a few of them.

  • IGetCranked

Simon is probably burned out. I know I would be if I had done this as much as him.

You know, about this Blaker girls day on Mtv, I’m not sure if I like that. It is great for his fans but it seems to me that it gives him an unfair advantage. If I were really rooting for another contestant, I would be steamed.

  • beachn

Tamyra’s lack of success has puzzled me. I once read that
it’s all their decisions after Idol that determine if they
make it or not. I guess she just made bad choices.

I never had her ahead of Kelly C the entire season but Simon
pimped her all the way. Don’t I remember that she was the first artist signed by the new “19 Entertainment” label?? Whatever happened to that??

  • Former_AI_Junkie

I thought the contestants didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get their own day until they reached the top three?

It’s up to the city (i.e., mayor) whether the local contestant gets their own day or not. The top 3′s day is set-up by AI and the city.

I’m furious over Sanjaya not getting his own day. It’s time people realised that for some he’s just as much of an “Idol” as any of the others.

  • Metta

    Good morning!

Re. Tamyra – I am somewhat surprised that she hasn’t been more successful. She was my fave during season one, though I’ll readily admit that Kelly C has a great voice. After AI was over, I think she didn’t focus 100% on her music–a little like McPhee. She did some acting and then, after too much time had passed, came out with a CD–which got terrible reviews. Another problem–a huge one in my mind–was her reliance on her own compositions. She is a TERRIBLE songwriter. If she lets someone else take over the reins, there’s still a chance she could do well. I think she’s very talented.

Jersey and MaryS – Thanks for your recaps. It is interesting to hear how about Tay’s diff moods as relates to these shows. Do you think the crowd had anything to do with his more relaxed performance? This was an assigned seating venue, right? Did people stand or sit for much of the show? The consensus seems to be that the standing venues bring out the more energized, pants-on-fire, Taylor. It must have been great to hear more of his original stuff.

I am SO looking forward to the Beacon.

  • LB2

    Blaker girls day on Mtv

Well Sanjaya is frequently featured on MTV, VH1, and the Soup, as well as the news. I don’t think that’s an unfair advanatge; it’s up to the contestants to somehow generate interest in them. If Sanjaya and Blake and any of the others manage to do this, all the more power to them.

Plus it’s for charity so I can’t really be upset about it. I hope it raises more money for the cause.

  • IGetCranked

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m furious over Sanjaya not getting his own day. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s time people realised that for some heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just as much of an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as any of the others.

Yes he is and furthermore, he entertains me better than the “good” contestants except for Blake.

  • jersey

Metta – it was an assigned seating venue. There was alot of dancing in your seat and some sporadic dancing here and there. At the end, when he did Runaround, and for the encore, Take the Long Way Home, he told everybody to stand up and move, and we obliged! Taylor was more talkative last night than at the Starland. Much more banter with the crowd – he asked if anyone knew what Borgata meant. He said for him it meant broke (lol).

  • IGetCranked

LB2, I guess I’m getting the whole thing wrong. I thought it was a voting party.

  • db*

    Morning, all.

When I got home last night only to find that MJ’s was MIA, I flipped out a bit. I think it’s called withdrawal symptoms. *shrugs*

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s up to the city (i.e., mayor) whether the local contestant gets their own day or not. The top 3à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s day is set-up by AI and the city.

So, Blake is screwed if he makes it to the top 3; he won’t be getting his own day since he’s already had one. I’m sure they’d do something else in the same vein though…

The consensus seems to be that the standing venues bring out the more energized, pants-on-fire, Taylor.

Hehe. That inspired an interesting visual in my head. :laugh_tb:

  • IGetCranked

So, Blake is screwed if he makes it to the top 3; he wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be getting his own day since heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s already had one.

They must not have been confident he would make it that far. hee

HMMM…decoy, it appears our mission of getting Taylor to sign my drumstick might not be as easy as once thought..lol

    beachn,

Tamyra career is a big disappointment, IMO. My feels about Tamyra is, she left her music career in the hands of people who know how to run a tv show but don’t have the slightest idea of how to really market individual artist. Maybe it’s because they don’t see these contestants as real artist. TPTB thinking seems to be, if 30 plus million watches AI somewhere amongst those 30 plus million is a market of people who don’t mind buying your cd.. I also feel that Tamyra is the reason her career is not going anywhere.

  • emeralgem

Sanjaya is definitely staying for top 6 – if he left either this week or next, it may overshadow the whole event. He may even make top 4. As a semi-Fanjaya, that warms my heart as long as he isn’t knocking out my fave before final 4.

I think it’s Kiki because think of the headlines. Not only is it a shocker (to people who follow the show casually) but Kiki also telegraphed her end on the show by singing J.Hud week 1. J Hud left in 7th place and so does Kiki.

I could be wrong though and often am. I hope I’m wrong because I would like to see her outlast Chris.

  • madaboutu

Hey all, good morning from the west coast, where at least it is sunny and fairly warm for a few days. Those of you getting the awful weather……….sorry, and I really mean that. I used to live in the midwest.
This is off topic, but if we didn’t think retro was in before, here is the latest to prove us wrong. In the L.A. Times this morning…………50′s style bathing suits for this summer and you wouldn’t believe the accompanying article as to why! So add up the longer hair for guys and some Afros coming out, 70′s stripes and gaudy prints on clothes, 50′s bathing suits, and singers and groups from the 70′s and 80′s making comebacks……I think we have a retro vibe going on for sure. I even saw that PBS is bringing back Mr. Rogers old shows. RETRO is IN, baby!!!!

  • IGetCranked

I won’t be sad to see Lakisha go. I think she has talent but she has some personality issues that doesn’t warm me up to her. I would love to see her be successful after the show for her daughter’s sake.

  • IGetCranked

madaboutu, I think it’s Taylor’s fault! LOL I don’t mind the musical comebacks but the clothes, they can keep.

I used to live in the midwest too and just felt ill for my parents when they had to spend Easter with a foot of snow to shovel. I love the midwest summer, however, and do miss those cool mornings wondering around the rivers and woods with my dog.

I have to say something about this Sanjaya day. I’m all for fun-nen and all that stuff, but does a tv caricature really deserve recognition by a mayor? Isn’t that a wee bit embarrassing to say that you were a part of convincing a mayor that Sanjaya, a caricature created stictly to feed the Idol money machine, deserves a recognized day? Spew!

  • pj

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m furious over Sanjaya not getting his own day. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s time people realised that for some heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just as much of an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ as any of the others.

I agree that he’s just as much of an Idol as any of the others. I don’t see why people bring up Blake getting his own day as an argument for Sanjaya getting one, though. They are from different towns.

LB2, I guess Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m getting the whole thing wrong. I thought it was a voting party.

The Blaker Girls thing is a viewing party, but they also sell merchandise. At Blake’s request, 50% of the proceeds go to the Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle.

As for it not being fair for MTV to give him exposure, that’s really not something the show can control. If the show had anything to do with it, I would agree, but they don’t.

I think it’s time for a guy to go home. We’ve had two girls eliminated in a row. I’m guessing it will be Phil this week.

  • LB2

Apparently the Idols were at a Dodgers game last night and when their faces showed up on the huge TV, the crowd booed. That’s mean, but funny.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

MaryS and I had a couple of up close moments with Loren Gold, Brian Gallagher and Brian Less one!!eleven1!. (just passing moments, nothing too exciting).

*sigh* Even if it wasn’t “exciting”, it’s still cool, and I’m still a jellus h8r. ;)

And yes, as PJ said… the Blaker Girls thing is a viewing party – they have one every week. They sell Blaker Girls merchandise and refreshments and, like PJ said, 50% of all proceeds go to charity. MTV just happens to be covering it this week. The AI franchise has NOTHING to do with putting this together.

The City of Bothell randomly picked a day to celebrate as Blake Lewis day. I have no doubt that when he makes top 3 (yes, I’m confident that he will), they’ll have a big throw-down then as well. He’ll get a key to the city, have a short concert, lots of appearances, etc etc. I’m so tempted to book a plane ticket to Seattle for that now… I’d SO love to be there. :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

LB, was Sanjaya there? Maybe that’s why. Heh.

If you are a Constantine fan or just like the way he sang Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, I was shopping at Dollar Tree and they had the Queen Tribute CD with CM for $1. There are a few other interesting covers on the CD also. Some of the covers were not my favorites, but not a bad pickup considering the price.

Here is an interesting statistic from the Ashville, NC newspaper……

    Busy Web traffic

Every month, we compile statistics about how our online site is doing. I thought Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d share some from March.

à ¯ ® Our unique visitors totaled 505,692, up from 309,673 the previous month and 293,813 the same month a year ago.

à ¯ ®Ãƒ ¯Ã¢â€š ¬  Our total page views were 4.4 million, up from 4.2 million the previous month and 3.2 million the same month a year ago.

à ¯ ®Ãƒ ¯Ã¢â€š ¬  Photo galleries grew to 257,319 page views. The most popular gallery was from the Taylor Hicks concert at the Orange Peel with 27,289 page views.

Sanjaya is dynamic and entertaining. Sure, his androgeny, whispery, limited range and lack of performance skills can be mocked to no end (as they are), but he’s very popular with a lot of kids and many adults have fallen in love with his “couldn’t care less” attitude.

So very true. Though not stinky, I can attest that wet cat is no fun either. For some unknown reason my cat, Wilson, decided to jump in the bathtub with me this morning…all but his head and little cat ears were drenched. LOL.

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“April showersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ suck.

Bright side? They bring May flowers. =)

  • LB2

I just watched Sligh on reality remix and he said he was going to sing Kiss To Build a Dream On (top 9), Smooth (top 8) and Live Like You Were Dying (top 7 country). I guess they all try to plan well in advance. I must say I don’t like his country choice – a little too played out.

    MJ:
I have used the new edit feature and it seems to work fine. A large black bar with white text saying “You may click on your name and/or comment to edit.” appears above the post once refreshed. This edit feature seems to be faster than the previous one.

One suggestion, can the size of the comment box be increased so more of your text can be viewed while editing? If so, it would make corrections and other edits a bit easier.

For some unknown reason my cat, Wilson, decided to jump in the bathtub with me this morningà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦all but his head and little cat ears were drenched.

LOL. Wilson voluntarily jumped in? I would like to meet this brave soul of a cat.

And I am a jellus h8r. Not necessarily of the Bobby Bennett show (although I’m sure they’re great), but because I wanna hang out with Boulder and MaryR!!! *whines*

And Chris Sligh was going to sing “Live Like You Were Dying” for country week? I hope that’s not an indication of the general kind of songs we’re going to hear on Tuesday. Can’t these contestants be CREATIVE when it comes to country and reach back farther than the 1990′s and 2000′s? If ANYONE pulls a song out of the bag that is more than 20 years old this week, I will throw a few votes their way. That is a PROMISE. And I’m not even a huge fan of old country… I LIKE it, but there is a general lack of creativity this year when it comes to song choices.

  • pj

Boulder and MaryR, have fun tonight!!!! LMAO at Wilson. :lol_tb:

I love old country, so I too would like to see some of the reach back into the vault. I’m not as familiar with the recent stuff, except for some alt country.

  • LB2

Hank Williams! If anyone does any Hank Sr or Jr, I will give them some votes. No LeAnn, Shania, Keith, Rascal, argh!

  • OhSoDevine

    Hi everyone!

Just returned from a week of family spring break….I don’t like coming home to Wisconsin and I certainly did not enjoy being disconnected from chat.

Mary and BS – have a great time tonite.

PJ – I thoroughly enjoyed your Bucky recap.

Re: Country Night..I am shocked no one has suggested (maybe I just didn’t see it)Billy Ray Cyrus’ Achey Breaky Heart for Sanjaya. It could be another show stopper – mullet, tight jeans and boots!

  • Former_AI_Junkie

I love all this “what I would’ve sung” BS. Hey Chris- if you had focused on song choice and singing instead of strategizing (poorly, I may add), you might have stayed longer in the competition. Giving one really good performance wouldn’t have hurt either.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

LOL Ohso.. it’s been suggested. But I think more widely thought is that he should sing “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy”.

  • MaryS-NJ

If ANYONE pulls a song out of the bag that is more than 20 years old this week, I will throw a few votes their way. That is a PROMISE.

If I had to venture a guess, I’d predict Melinda will do something older.

Actually, I’m hoping that she’ll sing something by Bobbie Gentry – maybe “Slow Cookin’” or “Steal Away” which are kind of soulful country. Or! “Tennesee Homesick Blues” by Dolly Parton. I think Melinda is a Tennesee native isn’t she? Has Dolly refused to clear ANY of her songs?

  • OhSoDevine

Sarah, I am trying to catch up but must have missed it. I agree with the “Save a Horse, Ride A Cowboy” as well. I saw plenty of t-shirts with that saying on them this week.

We were near Gulf Shores and spent two nights at the famed Florabama as well as Lulu’s. To think that Taylor and LMBO spent many a night playing for tips at the Florabama…..and to see them now.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

LOL You can tell I didn’t listen to country music in the 90′s cause I’m looking at a list of the top 100 country songs in the 90′s and I’m recognizing maybe 1 out of every 10 of these songs. Heh.

  • jpfan

The contestants this year picking boring/not great songs because they are mediocre talents. They also lack “soul” and I’m not just talking r&b. I think it can stop raining now.

  • WhatdIsay

“Hank Williams! If anyone does any Hank Sr or Jr, I will give them some votes.” That may be illegal for these kids to sing them in many southern states!”

I went to see Pat Boone last night. I figured he was old but he was a really good entertainer. Taylor disappeared for several hours during American Idol. Finally he told someone he went to a Pat Boone concert. So I had to go to one. He was great!! I was surprised. I noticed something, Taylor had his band positioned just like Pat had his! Taylor’s sax player would step down to play a lead part-so did Pat’s. Taylor would go stand next to his guitar player when he had a lead part-so did Pat. I wonder if he got this from him. I didn’t know Pat was in an accident and had metal put in his jaw. I did know Pat wrote the words to EXODUS!

I do NOT think he deserves to WIN

What do you mean? He was put in the top 24. Everyone in the top 24 are potential winners, no? I thought that’s what AI was about.. you vote for your favourite out of a group of 24 people the producers choose. How is Melinda more deserving than Sanjaya is?

  • daisy

completely and utterly shut in with snow and crappy weather, all I have is cheap wine (damn that man and his need for a bargain) and now I find out the Boulder and MaryR are seeing BOBBY tonight, jellus, jellus jellus right now
Carp, this is turning out to be a rotten day, no soccer, no Bobby, bad wine and tomorrow is Monday :wallbash_tb:

  • LB2

Billy Ray Cyrusà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Achey Breaky Heart for Sanjaya

Oh Lord! That’s all I’m gonna say.

Yeah, touching Hank Williams may be wrong but at least it shows that their knowledge of country is more extensive than Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. I don’t expect much this week but would it kill someone to try something way old and good, or something new as in alt-country?

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Everyone in the top 24 are potential winners, no?

That is complete bull. Many people are put into the top 24 as cannon fodder only. Each year, there are only about 3 or 4 who are legitimate contenders for the title. The rest are just filler.

Paul Kim or Alaina Alexander or Amy Krebs could have NEVER won this show. Even if they got tons of early face time and picked the best songs ever written. Do I really have to write a dissertation on why?

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Mary – From what I understand, yes, so far Dolly will not clear her songs for AI.

  • rher

I’m not dissing one AI6 contestant over another or saying that Sanjaya is less deserving of a “Sanjaya Day” vs. Blake or Melinda or anyone else. They are entertainers, in one form or another. Call me old-fashioned or a party-pooper but I don’t think anyone has earned a specially proclaimed day by their said city/major.

  • pj

Do you guys think Blake should sing a country song straight or do something like this?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSaV7fP107c

BoulderSoul – my laugh for the day was reading about Wison jumping in the tub with you!! Never had a cat do that -mine have walked around on the side, or stuck their paws in.

  • emeralgem

I am also a fan of the Pep Shop Boys, but did NOT like their up beat version of that song…Just give me some plain OLE WILLIE for that one..

  • mississippigirl

LOL Ohso.. ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been suggested. But I think more widely thought is that he should sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

Sigh. I get no respect. When Sanjaya does Achy Breaky Heart on Tuesday, I want apologies! I’m taking down names now.

And Blake, my dear Sarah, is doing Save a Horse…. :)

Spoke too soon..Apparently I do have the option..

  • Former_AI_Junkie

That is complete bull. Many people are put into the top 24 as cannon fodder only

This isn’t the producers’ version of the story. Going by the producers, any one of the top 24 is a potential winner. Therefore, Sanjaya is just as deserving as Melinda is.

  • star

pj, I think Blake should sing a country song as faithful to the original as possible. Your link just gave me flashbacks to the judges’ remarks to him on Diana Ross night! *shudder* (Love The Pet Shop Boys though!)

Do any of you use last.fm? I was just looking up the Idols’ stats on there – number of plays & listeners (these figures are to date, not weekly or monthly or anything)…

    SARAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LMAO, yes, Wilson just hopped in voluntarily. In his 5 years, he has done this a few times….just not a few years. All I can figure is since I have regularly groomed himà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ complete with baths and blow drysà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ since a kittenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ he has little fear. However, that being said, he did looked a bit shocked after he jumped in the tub. He totally booked and ran through the house like a mad man. Of course, adorned in nothing but a towel, I quickly followed him so that I could dry him off. Quite a sight.

  • LB2

There are spoilers up on IDF but they look totally fake because they already have the song order and comments down, and it’s from dress rehearsals (which don’t happen until Monday usually). TAKE WITH A HUGE GRAIN OF SALT.

Sanjaya Malakar – Who You’d Be Today (Kenny Chesney)
Phil Stacey – Raining On Sunday (Keith Urban)
Blake Lewis – Ain’t Going Up Til The Sun Comes Down (Garth Brooks)
Jordin Sparks – Can’t Fight the Moonlight (Leann Rimes)
Lakisha Jones – How Do I Live (Leann Rimes)
Melinda Doolittle – There Will Come a Day (Faith Hill)
Chris Richardson – Live Like You Were Dieing (Tim McGraw)

Supposedly from reactions at dress rehearsal and the opinions of Martina McBride: Sanjaya actually pulled out a respectable performance to start out the night. Phil was okay but kept messing up his words. Blake totally transformed the song to fit him but they felt he was rushing the song. Jordin does great, but was pitchy in the high parts. Lakisha stayed safe again this week but pulled it together nicely. Melinda was supposedly amazing. Chris Richardson was also said to have done very well. Chris Richardson also performed a second song which he could use but that is unsure.

  • pj

Star, I think you’re probably right about Blake singing it straight. Thanks for the last.fm info. I haven’t heard of it, but will check it out! Go Team Plaid!

LB2, I’ve noticed most of the spoilers that turn out to be fake are posted by people who create accounts just for that purpose. Thanks for bringing it over. I am taking it with a grain of salt and hoping it is not true. I’m not digging these song choices.

OhSo, I’m glad you enjoyed the Bucky recap. It was fun!

Sorry to hear of your flooded basement. I hope there is not too much damage

Boulder Soul, I’m sorry I missed this before. We’ve been through floods before and after we lost a bunch of camping gear we put everything that matters on shelves off the floor. All the electronics, the water heater and machines are on pallets.

There’s about 2 inches of water on the floor down there. Unfortunately, our sump pump is broken, so we need to get a new one.

For some unknown reason my cat, Wilson, decided to jump in the bathtub with me this morningà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦all but his head and little cat ears were drenched. LOL.

LOL! Our cats would not be caught anywhere near a bathtube with water in it.

  • MaryS-NJ

Re: the alleged Spoilers, I can believe Jordin’s and KiKi’s choices. Jordin is young and SHOULD sing LeAnn and KiKi sings the most predictable songs.

I would have thought Melinda would sing something classic but, didn’t she (or her friend Mandisa) sing back up for Faith Hill at one point? If so, that would make sense.

Is ‘American Idol’ losing its appeal?
The sixth season of the nation’s most popular television event has kicked off, and it is still managing to attract an amazing number of viewers — a whopping 35 million per episode. But are viewers beginning to lose interest? American Idol started out as a competition to find the best vocalist in the country — not the best comedian, model or dancer, and definitely not to find the worst singer.

Co-host quit ‘Idol’ because he thought its days were numbered
If only Brian Dunkleman hadn’t quit “American Idol,” we might all have much less of squirrely Ryan Seacrest in our lives.
Dunkleman is Seacrest’s oft-forgotten co-host from the first season of “Idol.” He dropped out because he wanted a bigger career, and thought “Idol’s” days were numbered.
But the 35-year-old remains philosophical about his appallingly bad decision.
“I have what a lot of people refer to as ‘poor judgment,’ ” said Dunkleman, who lives in Los Angeles. “I thought it would run two seasons!”

I have no clue what they will choose to sing onTuesday, but here are a couple songs that might be fun…and fit their voices.

Melindaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ End of the World, Skeeter Davis A good old fashioned song.

Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ I think he could do great on “Kisses Sweeter than Wine”, Jimmie Rodgers (couldn’t find a video).

    Drivin’ My Life Away or
I Love a Rainy Night both by Eddie Rabbit.

Philà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ My Little Girl, Tim McGraw. This would be a real tear jerker if he gets the boot, especially since he has a new baby girl.

Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ 9 to 5, Dolly Parton. LOL, notice the Disney characters.

    Thanks for the articles, Afan.
Mary, I’m sorry to hear about your basement. We’re ok so far – of course now that I’ve typed that out loud, I’m sure we’ll be flooding any minute now. We have two sump pumps in our sump pit. Right now, they are both running continuously. We also have everything that matters up off the floor (hopefully, we always seem to miss something). We’ve also flooded several times (4?) over the 14 years we’ve lived here.

  • Boulder Soul

Damn, I just did a post with links that went into moderation…:(.

I obviously have no clue what they will sing but here are a couple of songs that IMHO would be fun and fitting to their voices.

    Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ 9 to 5, Dolly Parton

Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ I think he could kick ass on “Kisses Sweeter than Wine” by Jimmie Rogers (couldn’t find a video).

I think he could do well on Eddie Rabbit’s I Love a Rainy Night

Philà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Could do Tim McGraw’s “My Little Girl”. Since he has a new baby girl, it would be a real tear jerker, especially if he gets the boot.

  • Boulder Soul

For Melinda, good old fashioned song….
Skeeter Davis, The End of the World. She already has the wardrobe. :)

    jersey,

It seems this whole area tends to be rather soggy when it rains like this, doesn’t it? We have designated “wetlands” on our property, but they whole neighborhood is very, very soggy when it rains like this. Our neighbors just called to ask if they could borrow the sump pump which is broken. They have a worse problem than we do.

When we had our new driveway built, it was designed to draw the water out of the house to the brook on the side of our house. It works pretty well because the flooding is much less now that it used to be. Still… ugh.

It sure is soggy, Mary. Most of the people in my neighborhood had three feet of water during hurricane Floyd. We were “lucky”, we only had 8 inches! They’re all gonna choose lame-o songs as par the course this season. Honestly, the only things I care about this season are 1. How far I can help get Sanjaya and 2. The whereabouts of Melinda’s neck.

I really, really want Lakisha to get the boot next week. She’s doing the same thing every week and she’s showing WAY too much skin. Egh.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

This isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the producersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ version of the story. Going by the producers, any one of the top 24 is a potential winner. Therefore, Sanjaya is just as deserving as Melinda is.

Doesn’t each voter have the right to make that choice? IMO, Sanjaya is not as deserving as Melinda is to win. Seems to me that’s what the producers sell as the point of the show – for the American public to figure out who deserves to win.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t each voter have the right to make that choice? IMO, Sanjaya is not as deserving as Melinda is to win

But here’s my point- since this isn’t a legitimate talent competition, how is Melinda more deserving? Granted, she’s a (WAY) better singer than Sanjaya is, but Sanjaya can also be successful in showbiz and is popular with many people. Once put there by TPTB, he’s just as deserving as anyone else.

If you want a real singing competition, let the contestants sing for longer than 1m 30s and cut down on the backstories and the judges’ banter. Choosing the best 24 singers/performers out of 100,000s of auditioners would help too.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

But the point of the show is not to determine who can be successful in showbiz and is popular with the American public. That may be what it comes down to at times, but that isn’t the point. The key to the whole thing is that each and every person decides who they think is more “deserving” and votes for that person.

It was quite different when it started. They were adamant during that first season that they were looking for a singing superstar and IMO, the talent level, at least of the finalists, reflected that.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

S1 had AWFUL male finalists. Much worse than all other seasons (or at least most of them).

  • Lu

I’ve been looking at those mediabase charts myself and am curious…

I know what top 40 is – self explanatory but what is the difference between

    Hot AC
    Mainstream AC
    AC

I listen to the radio and I’m wondering what I am. I now know I’m contemporary and an adult (most of the time) but I dont know if I’m hot, mainstream or just plain.

Weather cold, tickets hot as Hicks concert tickets go on sale

The weather was cold, but the tickets were hot.

The Soul Patrol was out in force as tickets for Taylor Hicks’ July 6 concert went on sale Saturday morning at The Maryland Theatre. When the box office opened on South Potomac Street, about 150 fans had lined up to make sure they get to see their Idol, and more were filing in.

A dozen or so had camped out overnight to be the first to drop $90 a pop to see the 2006 American Idol winner, braving temperatures that dipped to 28 degrees as spring still struggled to take hold in Western Maryland.

“We were warm pretty much all night, until early this morning,” said Megan Riesland, 27, of Clear Spring.

They stayed warm by huddling under blankets and by dancing to Hicks’ new self-titled release.

“And lots and lots of coffee,” said Riesland, who arrived at the theater on Friday about 4 p.m. to be first in line.

Oh, Lu you certainly are not plain. And there’s nothing mainstream about your evening chat. You must be HOT.

  • Lu

MN – LOL – thanks! Sure would like to know the difference in those charts though – what the heck do they mean???

$90 a ticket to see Taylor???? Yikes! Glad I’m an Elliott fan!

    Well, I didn’t specify males, did I? :wink_ee:

  • Former_AI_Junkie

But the point of the show is not to determine who can be successful in showbiz and is popular with the American public. That may be what it comes down to at times, but that isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the point.

Really? Tell that to the producers, because their actions disagree with what you’re saying. The entire show is set-up more as a reality competition than a singing competition:

    1. A less-than-stellar top 24 is chosen out of 100,000s of auditioners.
    2. Performance time is second to the judges’ banter, commercial plugs and contestants’ backstories.
    3. The musically ignorant public gets to vote.

All this doesn’t lend itself to the “most talented wins” scenario, but rather to the “most liked wins” scenario. Granted, all winners are talented, but that’s merely a part of the reason they’ve won.

  • http://stores.ebay.com/BookWomanBlues-Book-Nook Bobbi

Ok, you win. I’m not going to argue with you any longer because you aren’t interested in hearing another point of view anyway. IMO, Sanjaya does not deserve to win. Period. It is my opinion. You are more than entitled to yours. Night!

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Bobbi, I would think that answering your points with my own means I’ve heard your POV. And I wasn’t stating a mere opinion; I was trying to make a point which I think is fact, which is: AI isn’t, and never was, purely about talent, but is a reality show where the winner also (and just as importantly) has to be liked by the voters.

There’s nothing such as “deserving” on AI. It’s just a stupid TV show. Pick whomever you’d like to see again next week and vote for them, that’s all there is to it. The rest is lies told by TPTB and the judges.

    Re: Tamyra’s “non”-success

Repeating myself here…after Idol, Tamyra roomed with one of my best friend’s daughters for quite awhile (they are still friends.) Apparently, Tamyra was given 2 or 3 chances by Clive and blew everyone. In her arrogance, she was going to do it “her” way or no way…from hair, clothing and recording material. So, Clive said “your way and bye-bye”.

Her vote-off in Season 1 was just as much, if not more, shocking than Chris’. She pretty much owned the competition from day one. I was a huge (early) fan, but began to mutiny towards Kelly after big band week.

  • pj

Lu, you are most definitely HOT!

    Bobbi, how ’bout those Braves?

I agree that it’s a voting competition, not a singing competition. It’s a cast of characters. I love it. I just started watching in season 4, so I cannot comment on season one.

  • Chris58

Taking a circuitous route to AI…spent the better part of this afternoon at a black funeral (my boss’ mother-in-law). Man, if I went tomorrow, would I love a send-off like that! They really know how to Celebrate a Soul Home!

I could have given you 5 American Idols just from the choir alone! What an inspiration!

I think Melinda is a Tennesee native isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t she? Has Dolly refused to clear ANY of her songs?

Melinda was born/raised in Tulsa Oklahoma, she moved to Tenn in the recent years. :biggrin_wp:

  • bean99

It was quite different when it started. They were adamant during that first season that they were looking for a singing superstar and IMO, the talent level, at least of the finalists, reflected that.

I’m not so sure, Bobbi. The top 5 in season 1 contained RJ, Nikki, & Justin, none of which were anything other than mid-level singers. Kelly & Tamyra were the only really good singers out of the bunch.

Thata was interesting to hear about Tamyra, Chris58. It sounds like she believed what the judges said over what Clive was telling her.

  • xoxoyc

“stuff like that there” was the performance that gave Kelly the title IMO. That was brilliance.

And as for anyone “deserving” the title- I think anyone who gets the votes deserves it. The judges/producers should not put anyone into the top 40 for America to vote on that they would not to win IMO. American Idol is a popularity contest far more than it is a singing contest despite what they preach.

  • MaryS-NJ

Melinda was born/raised in Tulsa Oklahoma, she moved to Tenn in the recent years.

I think Dolly has refused to allow her music to be used on Idol anyway, but thanks for the correction, Lisa!

Would love to see Suckjaya sing Travis Tritt’s ” 10 Feet Tall and Bullet Proof”. :lol_tb:

  • t2

I don’t know why I care, but I find Olivia Mojica’s new attempt at “fame” so incredibly sad…

  • cricket

Two country songs that I love are “Stupid Boy ” by Keith Urban and “Long Trip Alone” by Dierks Bentley. I’m not sure that any of the guys on AI6 could pull either one of them off but I can bet that three gentlemen from AI5 could ( Taylor , Elliott and Chris D.) I think Taylor could hit both of those songs out of the park with that smokey voice of his.
I hope Phil chooses wisely and does a good job. He does have a good voice and he seems like a nice guy and he seems very grateful to be given this opportunity.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

And I wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t stating a mere opinion; I was trying to make a point which I think is fact

I believe that makes it – gasp! – an opinion.

    Oh, another smartass.

The reason I used the word “think” was because I did not go out and scientifically prove what I had to say, it’s just somethig I’m pretty sure of.

The word “think” doesn’t change it from fact to opinion, BTW. Galileo thought that the Earth went around the Sun, but he viewed it as fact, even though he hadn’t proven it yet.

Fact: I think AI is far from a pure talent competition.
Opinion: I think AI being far from a pure talent competition is a bad thing.

A fact can be found and agreed upon, while an opinion might never be agreed upon simply because no fact/s would change it.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

    Curiosity question: Do you watch???

Only my love Sanjaya.. and ocassionally I’d watch someone else, like Jordin or melinda. The rest are all -meh-* to me. I liked Blake a lot to begin with, but his singing ability hasn’t really taken me over.

Bobbi and JJ, Floating away yet?

I just tried to go to the gym, and I couldn’t get there. Literally, every egress is flooded. I’m stuck in this house until the waters start to subside. I’m glad we have a row boat. You????
