Steven Tyler Repsonds to Nicki Minaj: “A Racist I’m Not”

In an interview with the Canadian entertainment show, E Talk, ex American Idol judge, Steven Tyler responded to new Idol judge,  Nicki Minaj’s charge that he’s a racist.  Nicki had fired off a series of angry tweets, where she  called the Aerosmith frontman a racist among other things.  This was in response to Steven voicing his concerns to MTV News about Nicki’s ability to judge hopefuls.Via ENews

The former American Idol judge is sorry that Nicki Minaj found his comments to be racist. “I apologize if it was taken wrong, Nicki,” the Aerosmith rocker said Tuesday on eTalk, a Canadian entertainment show.

“But I am the farthest from [being a racist],” he said. “I am the last thing on this planet as far as being a racist. I don’t know where she got that out of me saying I’m not sure how she would’ve judged Bob Dylan.”

“Maybe I spoke out of turn,” he said. “But a racist I’m not, Nicki.”

Nicki, who can’t seem to sit on her hands when she’s criticized in the press, fired off a series of tweets after Steven told MTV he thought she “would have sent [Dylan] to the cornfield” if the legendary folksinger had auditioned for Idol. Steven insisted he only meant, “if Bob Dylan came on the show, he would’ve been thrown off.”

So, is that an apology sort of? Neither was right in this instance. Steven should have held off his opinion about Nicki until he actually had the chance to watch her in action. And Nicki needs to shut it. Sadly, in this instance, and the Mariah Carey feud, she was reacting to provocation. But she’ll forever be the party to look bad if she can’t handle criticism and baiting in a mature manner.

But then, maybe it doesn’t bother her to have a reputation for being crazy and unpredictable. I have a feeling Nigel Lythgoe is loving the publicity.

I am tired of Nicki already and the season has not started yet.  Did Nigel and American Idol team make a mistake for hiring her for this upcoming season as a judge?  Only time will tale. Can’t wait to see her judging skills.

    Bawahawahawahwah!!!!!!!!!

S12 is gonna be interesting. Bring on the crazy Nicki!

Oh Steven we know you are not racist, but you were wrong for assuming things about her abilities to do her job without ever having seen her judge. She was right, you got criticized left and right before you even started and there you go doing it to someone else.

Nicki, you are a nut. Try not to curse everyone out all the time. I admit I am entertained by it but it doesn’t help you any. Just chill.

There goes your Tinawina advice for the day. LOL

If Minaj had gone with an “awwww… Steve Tyler’s a little addled to think I don’t appreciate Bob Dylan” response, the dude would have no refutation at all, since he generally talks and tweets as if he’s a lot addled. [The phrasing can be improved…]

THAT is why she’d do well to pause before replying to goads, when it’s something in the press rather than somebody right there in her face. One can think of much better retorts, with a pause to breathe first.

Would any judge past or present actually put someone with Bob Dylan’s voice through?

HAHAHAHA. I love Nicki. I, for one, can NOT wait for the new Idol season. BRING IT ON! :)

Hahaha! I have a Greatest hits cd by Dylan that I always say should be titled “Songs I wrote that made someone else famous”!!! But I still love his unique nasally voice!

As long as Fox has a 15 sec delay to the live feed going to the Networks, Nikki will be fine :)

Ugh.  I’m not sure I want to watch this season – that girl is nuts.

Yep. I have no problem with Nicki (or anyone) responding to comments by others, but IMO she needs to find a way to do it that makes her look much better than the person who poked/insulted her.

I would have thrown off Bob Dylan too based on vocal ability. The man’s an even worse singer than Phillip Phillips…

I can see now a lot of famous people provoking Nicki Minaj just to see her batsh*t crazy reactions. It’s gonna be fun.

  • fantoo1

It’s not like Phillip is THAT bad.

  • fantoo1

More reason to watch the season! See ya in January :)

Celebrities who are in the press all the time because of incendiary behavior eventually get famous because of that behavior rather than their talent.  It may be a lot of media attention in the short run, but eventually people get tired of it and move on to some new headline-grabber.  She will find it hard to ever get the public to just recognize her for her talent now.

Let’s not underestimate Bob Dylan. He might actually do a very unique and kick-ass take on a song for his audition that blow the judges away and they might put him through the live rounds. It’s the voting audience that Bob Dylan would have to worry about, especially after 6 WGWGs in a row.

The story of Nicki’s comments has been carried everywhere.  I wonder if she listens to Dylan in her quiet moments at him.

Wow who would have thought that Steven Tyler would come out as classy; well in comparative to Nicki I guess it makes sense ;)

Honestly she’s probably right about him — although his comment was probably slightly more sexist with a tinge of racism (and it wouldnt be the first sexist thing he’s said publicly in relation to idol), although I’m sure most people will dismiss her and rally behind him for the exact same reason.  Heck, people have dismissed her from the get-go with the same motives.

Nicki is a cartoon but so is Stephen. However her temper is pretty much out of control. I don’t know anything about her childhood, but generally speaking people who immediately go into “fight mode” as in the “fight or flight” mechanism do so because of childhood trauma. Her fight response is more or less on automatic pilot. I feel for her, but her constant cursing is a big turn off and I really can’t get past that so will probably employ the flight response when the show starts.

Or maybe he was indicating that a lot of the “singers’ today wouldn’t be able to realize someone with REAL talent when they get up on the stage. Bob Dylan wrote his own music and the singers back in the 60′ s and 70’s didn’t have auto tune and computers to help “enhance ” their voices. Doesn’t sound racist or sexist to me…just sounds like his take on the situation.
