Steven Tyler says when he tells someone on Idol that’s the best he’s ever heard them, his 95 year old father will call him and say, “Are you back on crack.” How awesome is that?

Steven sat down with Jay Leno on the Tonight Show Friday to talk about the old days with the band in Boston, his influences, wearing his daughter’s clothes, his drug use, band troubles and more.

He called Jacob Lusk, who happened to be sitting in with Rickey and the band, “My favorite. An angel from above…I love this guy.” And he said he “actually got moist” watching Jennifer Lopez perform on Idol Thursday (TMI!).

Also, Steven mentioned that Aerosmith will perform on the finale, and next week, he debuts the video for his new solo song, “It Feels So Good.”

As much as he sucks as an Idol judge, I really do love this dude. Maybe next year he could serve as a mentor, and let Jimmy sit at the judges’ table.

  • Dlynne

I’ve fallen in love with him. I like the chemistry he has with JLo. They might be too sweet but I can’t think of anyone I’d rather see sitting in his chair. I definitely don’t want to see Jimmy there – he has enough control behind the scenes.

  • JudyOhio

He might be a softie judge, but he is one heck of a personality! AI is lucky to have him imo. Very.

I just wish that American iIol was all about the kids-not about promoting the judges-just too much of that going on-although I guess it does keep the interest in the show up.

Steven could try just a little bit harder to provide constructive advice – something the contestant can work on. Or maybe that is Jimmy’s job? He is a lovable character, isn’t he?

  • tinydance

Did anyone notice that when Jacob finished singing Ricky Minor and the band played “YMCA”?

Steven and J-Lo really can’t give really bad critiques because of bad P.R. Too bad.

    lololol

    this guy is so likable.
He could give more real critics but as an artist, he chooses to just see the positive. It seems to me that they just want the public to decide for themselves.. not really a judge, he appears to be there just to comment

I have the book. I’m on Ch. 3. It’s really good! The guy had an interesting childhood. It’s pretty amazing he’s still alive!

yes he took the Idol gig for the self-promo.
yes he is a less than desirable judge.
yes i love him to death and i would miss him like hell if he didn’t come back next season.

I love Stephen Tyler! He really has funny and interesting things to say. I think the thing about American Idol is the show does focus on not just the contestants but the judges too. I believe that is how they bring everyone in. Steven and JLo are positive to the contestants and nice but I also believe JLo more so will give good constructive criticism. I feel the judges are more committed to the contestants this year. I loved watching for Simon comments previous years but I find this year much more enjoyable to watch. The contestants are one of the best years yet! Even though I am partial to season 7.

Can we have Steven’s dad as a judge next year?

I’m really glad to have Steven on the show, honestly. I thought he was a good judge during the part when the judges were actually picking who went through. But, since I was never a big Aerosmith fan, he’s someone I was only peripherally familiar with – I liked his voice, but had no conception of his personality at all. I’ve really enjoyed seeing a bit of who he is, and I like what I see.

I’m surprised nobody is picking up on the most important thing he said (for me). He said, ‘you know sometimes we can’t hear them singing, so I say ‘that’s the best I ever heard you.’

People who have sat near the judges have reported back that you can’t hear them from there. We see these judges looking at a script frequently. The comments they make often have me scratching my head since it’s obvious I’ve heard contrary to what they are saying.

Seems they’re judging on a concept and not reality.

  • nk1219

In response to TwigLa. You are right about he did say they cannot hear the contestants that well. Doesn’t make much sense to me that these are JUDGES and they cannot hear?? I wonder what that is about? Remember Paula, saying a lot of strange things at times? I remember the time she was critiquing a song and she thought it was the second song this person sang and it was only the first one. I am not a big fan of Paula’s but I believe she got a lot of crap because of it.

well i THOUGHT that is what he said but then i thought “no way” he really said that. that’s crazy. Nigel must have soiled his pants a little when he heard that one.

I don’t know much about sound, but I think it’s entirely possible that getting things mic’ed and balanced for live, in the room and doing so for TV broadcast might possibly be at odds. We know the sound is frequently sketchy on the broadcast. It wouldn’t surprise me that they’re trying to balance the two and that you never get an ideal. That would, for sure, explain why the pitchy comments are so often wrong or not there. They really can’t tell. But, they could still give better advice on style and concept.

Simon used to frequently say something the next day about his impressions on hearing the broadcast back. That would help with plausibility. I’d rather have that than Jimmy’s next day comments, or along with his, so the judges don’t look like idiots.

And, I really think they should have the professional guests sing live, like the returning idols do and like the contestants do. On any other show, it wouldn’t matter. But there’s a sub-text of “this is how the pros do it”, and to pretend they are performing under the same circumstances is not fair. At the least, they should say, this was pre-taped, because it’s incredibly hard to get a good performance live, with one take, like these kids do every week.

Hear! Hear! (Or, alternatively, hearing horns for judges!)

  • Nina1

Nigel must have soiled his pants a little when he heard that one.

Ya’ know, maybe Idol judges should use television monitors. It really wouldn’t be such a big deal.

  • Miss Chaos

I could listen to his interviews all day, he is so interesting. And funny. Heh, he reminds me of someone else I love to listen to with black hair lol.

I hope he is NOT judging next year. I love his music, his carefree personality, but is USELESS as a judge. Get him outta here already.

For some reason, the new configuration of the studio (or something) has played havoc with the sound. I’ve gone to shows in Seasons 5, 6, 7, 8, and now 10. The sound this year was terrible. We had no idea what anyone was saying when they were talking. I had to go home and watch the show, on TV, to find out!

When I watched my DVR, I thought “What ?”
I guess Steven thinks that since sometimes he can not hear the songs, it is better to just say everybody is amazing, rather than the other way around.
I would think that Nigel would have sat behind the judges table while the music is playing just to see.
    This is crazy.
