Steven Tyler confirms he’ll ‘probably’ be a judge on American Idol in this video taken Saturday night at the Aerosmith party at the MGM Grand after the band’s concert in Las Vegas.

“Probably going to be a judge on American Idol,”says Steven, when asked about his post-tour plans, “I’m doing it! Whataya think?”…

Of course, he’s got to sign that contract first…

He is a little scary looking these days, isn’t he. Could be interesting with him as a judge. Maybe he fills the Paula role, not Simon ;)

  • SybilTrelawney

I would have paid good money for him to be a judge when Danny Gokey sang “Dream On.” Beyond that, I just hope he’s sober more often than Paula was.

  • bjames

    Crap.

I have horrible feelings about this.

  • SybilTrelawney

He looks like he’s had a facelift, doesn’t he?

  • Truthiness

Ohhh kay then. Well we’ll see how it goes. I’m willing to give him a shot. And at least he knows something about the music business, so he has that over Ellen.

But uhhh yeah. Not sure how this and JLo and Randy are going to work.

Hmmmm. Wish they had gotten someone who produces music on the panel. Well besides Randy and his dawgs, yo, pitchy self.

  • Brenoga

I would have paid good money for him to be a judge when Danny Gokey sang “Dream On.”

    that would have been HILARIOUS.

Well, at least I think we’ll never hear this song on Idol again. and Don’t wanna miss a thing. that’s good news.

  • Marie23

YES!!!!! Idk why I’m so excited, it’s not like I’m a huge Aerosmith fan, but man for some reason I like this haha, much better than p. diddy or a lot of other choices, this probably make for one interesting Idol year to say the least haha.

  • Eriko

sigh….just can not find any logic to this, hopefully when it´s officially announced, there will be some sort of reason or explanation for their decisions

  • megkat

I think it’s going to work. He seems opinionated, so I’m sure it won’t be dull lol

  • Marie23

OMG Just saw video, that is one ugly man!!! haha those lips haha

  • jpfan

He’s going to be tough to look at on HD TV. I don’t think having him and JLo on is going to work. Performers are very loath to criticize each other and Idol needs one mean judge.

  • Valentin432

Am I the only one who thinks he seems more to be joking with this during the interview?

I’m not expecting him to be a judge as much anymore.

  • abbysee

He looks like he’s had a facelift, doesn’t he?

If that’s the after, I don’t wanna remember what the before was like! Actually I like a weatherbeaten man, but I mean that face has been through some wars I say.

I don’t know if this is a red herring or if I am down that rabbit hole Adam sings about!

That was the impression I got, too. It seemed like he knew the reporter was fishing for that info and he joked about it. It seems odd that he would have just put it out there like that when FOX is still not prepared to make an announcement.

  • Eriko

Am I the only one who thinks he seems more to be joking with this during the interview?

When you mention it, yeah, you could be right. Or should I say, I hope you´re right

  • mj

Am I the only one who thinks he seems more to be joking with this during the interview?

Don’t you think he’d laugh, or wink or something if he were kidding? With multiple news sources reporting his negotiations with FOX, I think the rumor is true. A little rash to blurt it out like that, but that could be Steven’s MO.

  • larc

He looks like he’s had a facelift, doesn’t he?

I thought he looked unusually good. ;)

  • madnessinmotion

If his MO is to just say whatever is on his mind regardless of whether others are ready to hear it he could make for an interesting judge…hmmm

  • Brenoga

A little rash to blurt it out like that, but that could be Steven’s MO

that looks exactly like Steven’s MO. And that reminds me that we could expect anything from him as a judge.

  • JudyL

Am I the only one who thinks he seems more to be joking with this during the interview?

I’m not expecting him to be a judge as much anymore.

After that video, I’d say it’s like 50/50 that he was serious. On second thought, I’d say less than 50/50.

  • hypnoticwhisper

I love Aerosmith but I don’t know how he would be as a judge. I’m still rooting for Harry Connick Jr.

They should just bring Paula back.

  • Valentin432

Possible MJ, just the way he says it in the interview makes me feel like he’s joking with the rumors and all, also I’m not so sure he is able to wink anymore.
We should know soon enough tough.

  • Eriko

also I’m not so sure he is able to wink anymore.

    LOL! Good one

  • hypnoticwhisper

My dream : Randy, Paula, and HCJ

    Make it happen!

  • iluvai

I like him. He’s a really great talent.

But I don’t get why he would have been chosen as a judge,
among all of the potential judges out there.

  • dsp

Kidd Kraddick is having Steven Tyler interview in the am……maybe an announcement!

  • negativo

Making the show more current, relevant and hip = hiring a 60-something YO rocker from the 70’s with substance abuse problems to be a judge.

Oh, and then fire the good looking 39 YO judge who happens to be one of the music industry’s top hit producing and song-writing stars.

    Yeah…great work, Nigel.

  • jack5791

This is such a bad idea.

  • iluvai

There are a lot of great singers/band members out there. I just
don’t get the why in choosing him.

  • kittensmittens

I’m curious to see if he can keep his language clean on live (ok, a few second delay) TV. He’s the sort I imagine to have a very salty vocabulary. Wonder if they will have to bleep/cut the audio for any of his critiques!

  • Indigobunting

I love Aerosmith, but gotta say, I’ve heard him do Dream On live and his scream ain’t pretty either.

Not in favor of him as a judge (I favor Harry C. Jr) but agreed, it’d be nice to never hear Dream On or Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing again.

This may be common knowledge, but are those lips natural- they seem more pronounced than in his top days-or is his face just sinking?

  • Dlynne

So, if he’s on tour, is he going to be around for the auditions?

I don’t know how I feel about this. It could be a trainwreck. Maybe that’s what TPTB want. But if they want chemistry among the judges, I’m just not convinced. I can see JLo and Randy together just fine but then add Steven Tyler into the mix? I don’t know…seems like oil and water to me.

ETA: The video isn’t working now. It says the video is private. Well, ok, then.

  • Kirsten

Dude needs to fire his plastic surgeon. That just ain’t right.

  • colette

    WTF?
This is seriously a bad idea. The grotesque look would not be so bad, if the guy was articulate and musically on the money.

That they (apparently) chose him over Harry Connick Jr., a seriously attractive, funny, hugely knowledgeable guy and great musician, makes me think they have a death wish or something.

I mean J-Lo, Randy and Steve Tyler? How can TPTB be so tone deaf? At least it’s not Bret Michaels. I think he sealed his doom when he got busted recently….

    here’s Harry:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUYMYhWd-lM&feature=related

  • Junior

He may be a hot mess, but he’s got a gorgeous daughter.

I don’t know what to think about him as a judge. I don’t get it.

  • nabs

man, he could srsly scare away viewers.

  • bean99

I can’t even stand to look at the guy let alone watch him on my big screen tv. Hoping there’s been no contract signed yet because this is the worst business decision I’ve heard in a long time. You have a choice for a good looking funny much younger guy like HCJ or even Chris Isaak and you punt them for ST? Yikes.

  • Marie Ruffin

I don’t get this choice at all…dude is 62 y.o. clearly not the demographic they want….and he’s not photogenic at all…looks like he’s had too many midnight benders.

  • Bethlyn

    Let’s put it this way…

I’d rather listen to Danny’s (non studio) version of ‘Dream On’ on continuous loop, rather then have to look at that man. S-C-A-R-Y. That dude looks like an ugly lady.

For the record, IMPO, I didn’t think Danny’s DO was all that bad. The studio was actually quite good. Not that this is the topic of the thread (I hear ya, MJ. Said what I had to say in defense of DG. To each his own. I’m done with it :-))

  • lucy

So they’re going to have to change the name of the show to “All Flakey, All the Time”?

And *Randy* will suddenly be the cogent and articulate one. Yikes.

  • mj

    Reminder:

Not that this is the topic of the thread

The key phrase here. Let’s not veer off track.

  • Bethlyn

    MJ is omnipresent. Amazing!

    I hear ya :-).

  • TwigLA

I can’t watch the video since I’m not a ‘Facebook Friend’ of whomever posted it. But just seeing his face, I laughed. I thought it was Marcie, theBotox nurse, in the Foster Farms commercials. If you haven’t seen it, go here “http://www.fosterfarms.com/about/imposters/tv_commercials.asp” and laugh.

This choice makes zero sense to me. I’m not going to rag on Steve Tyler being 62. There are many capable, knowledgeable, and contemporarily aware 60+ year olds in this world who can bring wisdom and guidance, as well as intelligent critiques. Steve Tyler isn’t one of them.

Is this a nod to V4TW?

  • rayni

Bleh. He still looks like that ventriloquist dummy ‘Madame’. This may be what ends my AI obsession. Bleh.

  • Nina1

If Idol wants a Steven Tyler type, they should have just gone with the real deal: Patti Smith.

I think Steven Tyler will pull in viewers; the trick is getting them to stay after they have dropped by. Gonna take some doin’

  • luvadamlambert

I like Steven Tyler better than I like J.Lo…and IDK,maybe becuz of don’t stop believin, some ppl will think it’s cool to see/talk about Steven Tyler? Not that aerosmith’s unpopular, but idk…I just think that Steven Tyler will pull in more viewers than JLo will

  • OvenMitt

“Don’t Stop Believing” is by Journey, not Aerosmith.

I agree, Steven Tyler will bring in viewers, not sure if he’ll bring in as many as JLo, but he’ll bring them. I personally am waiting with bated breath to see how this new threesome will interact. You hooked me again, Idol!

  • colette

Nina1 — PATTI SMITH! Patti don’t look near as bad as Mr. Tyler, and she’s actually really smart and articulate about rock music and a great mentor to lots of young musicians. I’d MUCH rather her be the judge but…….I can’t imagine they’d ever be that hip!

I’d rather listen to Danny’s (non studio) version of ‘Dream On’ on continuous loop, rather then have to look at that man.

Blethyln, dude, that is really funny…thanks for the Monday morning laugh!

  • baebae

I can’t access the video, says private. But maybe that’s a good thing. :D

I just hope he’s sober more often than Paula was.

My thought exactly. I feel more babble coming on.

  • Tess

I can sure tell that I am probably from a different generation when I read the “Steve Tyler” comments. When, in the name of all things holy, were “rock stars” supposed to be good looking, photogenic, literate, “smart”, unemcumbered with a “past”, and not have a past littered with drugs and non-sobriety, and groupies, and a few odd children here and there.

In my day “rock stars” really worked at being as ugly as possible: unwashed tangly over-long hair, sunken cheeks, glazed eyes, three day scruff…and if you were naturally sorta, kinda ugly it was a real boost for your popularity. The more their clothes were ratty, their shoes perposterous, and their attitude very off-putting the more successful they became. Hence the beatles quickly morphed from handsome “mop tops” to bearded, long-haired, slightly unkempt rockers.

Handsome guys were members of boy bands or “heart throb” ballad singers. And if a rocker was “handsome” by nature they quickly “fucked” up their lives to get some rock cred.

So I’m thinking that anyway who knows early (and still the absolute best) rock history won’t be put off by Steven’s appearance. That was what made him a legend, especially those lips (which were the same size when he was in grade school) and that huge mouth. Where would the world of rock be without all the animated pictures of that one of a kind “mouth”?

  • lucy

If Idol wants a Steven Tyler type, they should have just gone with the real deal: Patti Smith.

Trying to put Aerosmith and Patti Smith in the same artistic space just made my head explode, however. lol

  • connie0128

    Hmmm

    Journey vs Aerosmith.

I choose Journey – Steve Perry needs something to do. I think I prefer “THE VOICE” to “the mouth” and luvadamlambert is right – at least “Don’t Stop Believin” has seen a resurgence in popularity. And Steve Perry is WAY better looking.

Steven Tyler Confirms He’ll ‘Probably’ Be A
    Judge

Hmmmm. Confirms and Probably. Oxymoron. :)

  • oceana

He has lots of experience and probably will be interesting and not politically correct. At this point I’m ready for a shake-up and would welcome someone like him. Hope he signs on the dotted line.

  • Grammie Kari

Steven says he’s going to be a judge on American Idol. He didn’t say permanent judge or “Simon’s replacement.” So, I still see the possibility of a Guest Judge during later auditions (after his tour ends.) Watch out for more names to circulate.

  • TLKC

WOW! Thank-you guys for the funniest set of comments in a row that I have ever seen.

For the record, I can’t see myself tuning in for Steve Tyler. Not taking anything away from him as a singer/musician but he doesn’t come across as judge material.

  • karenc

I think that someone who has almost 40 years experience in the music business in a legendary band, who has stayed on top of the charts during most of this time, is still succesfully touring, and is known to be a terrific performer might have something to offer to AI. Also, he is open to other types of music other than rock. Though it will be a different atmosphere for him and for AI.

Maybe part of the problem last year was they didn’t have a sucessful performer on the judging panel, except for Ellen, who wasn’t in music. ANd that this is what was missing when Paula left. And that’s why they are getting sucessful performers to judge this year.

I would be glad, though if there was more rock on Idol, and i think that is the direction they are going in if they have Steven Tyler as a judge.

I’m also kind of thinking with all the rumored performers as judges if they are going to have them more like mentors than actual judges like we have now, at least for some of them. Maybe like a rotating panel of judging and mentoring or something. This kind of would fit in with what Ellen was told, that they wanted to work around her, and that things would be different this year. Not sure if this is a good idea or not, but it is just something I am wondering.

  • topaz

I say yes to Steven Tyler. Out with the generic Rock and in with the Rock & Roll baby!! Ahh the good old days of Rock music is coming back.

    From Kelly’s twitter

Just heard Steven Tyler might be a new judge on Idol this year ….I’m thinking of auditioning again just so I can see him every week :) about 20 hours ago via TweetDeck

Yeah girl! I’ll most definitely be tuning back in. What a legend!

Maybe so, but could he at least wear a bag over his head so he doesn’t scare the kids and horses?
