Listen to this cool, jazzy number Stefano Langone and Casey Abrams wrote while on tour with American Idols Live over the summer.

Casey handles guitar and Stefano riffs the lyrics. Very very nice boys! Check it out below.

Stefano always looked and sounded like a lounge singer to me on Idol, but this I like! Hip, young, uncontrived. Good job!

    ETA sorry posted twice:)

    Really nice

I always liked Stefano and his voice.  He has that smooth quality that plays nice with my ears.  Can’t stand this song at all.  I would change the station immediately.

  • Kesia Monteith

Yes, yes he is. Which makes all the more upsetting he decided to be too much of a joking contestant, rather than show the kind of musician he is.

I’m not sure it can be said that Idol took the shine out of Stefano or hid his talent.  I believe his potential was there but he did not seize the opportunity and was unable to pick the right songs and connect with the audience and showcase his talent.  I don’t think the blame can only go to the producers of the show.  I like Stefano’s voice but there is something about him to me that I just can’t connect with.  And then with the tour and him taking his shirt off each at show to get attention, that was just ridiculous.

    Love the song!

I have this feeling that Casey will end up being one of the “richer” idols down the road…and, no, not for his voice but for his understanding of music.  I really think that in a few years he will have found an awesome niche for himself, behind the scenes, and someday he will be the engine pulling along other artists.  His skill level at his age is tremendous and it will only get better as he ages.

This is interesting too.  To me, Stephano comes closest to any and idol that I can recall to approximating the rane of Stevie Wonder.  It was his tendency to overact during performances that always left me feeling off.  He came off as a corny or smarmy lounge singer over-pronouncing and mis-pronouncing words, I think, because he was trying to act like a singer rather than just being a singer.  Here, in a relaxed environment where he only seems to be focussing on singing rather than “performing,” he avoids all that and lets his singing talents shine through.  Or maybe it’s cuz he is dressed like Dopey, my favorite of the Seven Dwarfs, but it does work for me!  ;)

I like seeing people work together, because I think there’s often a synergy that can make each one better. But I think Casey could have a long career of his own, too.

Well, I agree with you and I don’t. I think Casey is probably the most talented all-around contestant I have seen on the show. Not saying he was blessed with the most natural vocal skills as others who have walked thru the idol doors–but IMO- he still is a good singer in other ways.  I say this because he has a distinctive sound, phrases so well, and sings with great rhythm and style. He also can sing sweet if he wants, jazzy if he wants or rock it out. (I think Donald Fagen from Steely Dan is a good/interesting singer even though he has kind of an unpleasant voice and limited range. But, he can still sing with such flavor and panache and rhythm and phrasing that I love listening to him. Some people consider Fred Astaire a great singer cause he could phrase a lyric so well–even though he had a thin voice and other limitations. But, the great songwriters of the day loved when he sang their songs.)

I also think Casey is a natural entertainer with great stage presence for someone so young. When I saw what he did on stage (especially after being hospitalized the same day as some performances) I was blown away.
And when I saw what he did at his homecoming (real jazz) and at the recent Vegas  show (rock/blues)–just confirmed my feelings. This kid can do it all.

But, if he decides on producing/arranging etc and working from behind the scenes–I think he would be very successful in that area as well. I have a feeling that eventually he will be doing that anyway-whether or not he is doing his own upfront career. He’s so musical and really takes pleasure in working with other talented people.

And Iovine–loved season 10–except for him. I think he hurt more contestants than he helped. Also, think that the contestants faired well in spite of him and his producing posse than because of him.

Not to get into this too much, but with people who are not only very creative but also uber-talented, as Casey is (and I’d guess gifted intellectually, too), one of the problems is actually picking a lane to drive in. I think it’s where the “jack-of-all-trades; master of none” saying comes in.

When you can do several things well, it’s hard to pick just one and focus on it. And some people never really do that. But it’s ideal if you can find one main focus, and then do other things later, or on the side.

I’m hoping Casey is able to choose the right focus for now and still keep his hand in the others over the coming years. I think he could be extremely successful (and I’m not just talking about money – success to me is being able to spend your time doing something you love doing, that improves your life and potentially other lives as well).

I really enjoyed that. I agree with much that was said up-thread about both these guys and the show in general.

How many times have we seen things done by the contestants before the show and loved them. Then on the show they seem like totally different people/artists. Ditto after the show. This can go both ways. Someone on the show may seem wonderful (and hyped) and you like what they do, then what they give you after is a total wtf?

Last season with Iovine, I think for the most part the artistry of the individuals was squelched for formulaic values.

Everyone gives Jimmy Iovine a hard time for being what he is; the head mogul of the worlds largest record label. He gave the kids a real world taste of what the music industry is all about. Is it ugly? Yes. Does it squelch creativity? Yes. Do you have to stand your ground to get your vision out? Absolutely. Did he squelch creativity that was marketable and worked? No.
I think his mentoring was genius for his no holds barred approach to the Idols and being the only one who was brutally honest with them during the season. He also had a stake in the outcome since he was going to invest his own money/resources into some of these kids, so why not bust their egos and see what they’re made of? I think most of the S10 Idols would agree that working with him was an honor and privilege not many new artists get and are thankful for it.

I don’t know if I would want Casey to have choose a lane and stay in it. I do understand from a commercial aspect that seems to be what the music biz is about today. But, I think that’s kind of a shame.

When Casey does his album, I hope he will get to explore a variety of styles.
Back in the day (when I was young–LOL) it seemed that artists were allowed the freedom to be creative and that’s what made for some music that will last long after many of us will be around.

  • http://twitter.com/CanadianLady2 CanadianLady

I don’t disagree, but the problem is that trying to do well in more than one area at a time takes a lot of time and multiple marketing, etc. etc. Easier if you become known in one and branch out later. But I also hope he can do whatever music he wants to do.

Stephano is a good singer, but these generic preaching ‘feel-good-about-yourself’ songs leave me cold.  They are nice listening to them but you forget them as soon as they are over.

I think it was a case of Stefano and Casey vibing and enjoying the musical moment.  I didn’t get any intent of preaching on their parts.  Just two guys having fun.

Very enjoyable.  Is is something that would be played on CHR or even Hot AC?  No.  But that doesn’t mean it’s without it.  I like it for the upbeat ditty it is.  Well done!

  • sdmama

Wow, call me surprised. There is nothing cheesy and corny about Stefano here. He sounds terrific. I really liked it at the first time. Amazing amount of depth and texture with a single guitar accompanying, and I agree this shows us what a great musician Casey is. Hmmm… Maybe Casey could have a CD with bunch of guest singers with him writing songs and playing instrument with them? This was not something I expected from “American Idol graduates”. Great job!

  • musicality

I was surprised by the video. Stephano sounded really good. I though his performances on Idol weren’t that good but his really suited him.

  • pj

Loved it!  Kinda shocked how well I liked Stefano on this.

Just goes to show… to make the top 12 you usually have to be very talented, no matter how hard we snark on ya.

  • moonz

I liked this! I loved the creativity, the vibe and the connection between Stefano and Casey. Two very talented guys!!
And I think that Idol does not show the complete musicality of the contestants.

  • Tera2

The melody is good enough and it actually showcases Stefano’s voice better than most songs he’s done.  That a jazzy vibe that even those who don’t like jazz and can handle.  Its a good writing effort by Stefano and Casey.  I was only judging the melody and flow though – I didn’t really pay much attention to the lyrics.

Awesome song, awesome vocal, awesome guitar playing.  Release it!  Where is the Stefano Langone solo album (independently produced, please!) -?
