According to trusted American Idol spoiler, Joesplace, Danny Gokey the Kansas City auditioner who lost his wife 4 weeks before his audition in Kansas City is on the list of Top 50 contestants.

Check out his audition:

And his My Space

The Top 50 were recently whittled down to the Top 36–the group of contestants who will compete live on the show, but there’s still no word on which contestants made that cut.

Check out my guide to the Hollywood Contestants, featuring the rumored Top 50 list, right HERE.

Wow, the contestants are really tight-lipped this time around. Last year, I remember having Top 24 spoilers the day after they were chosen.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

I think one of the reasons TPTB allowed Top 50 contestants who didn’t make the Top 24 to come back, was so they wouldn’t be tempted to bitterly spill the Top 36 list once they were cut.

  • stelladallas

Yay! I really want to see more of this guy!

Yes, I actually remember checking off the list as the Top 24 were being chosen. This is interesting. But, I can’t say I mind a little suspense, particularly since I have no willpower where spoilers are concerned. Heh.

And, of course, I’ve got no complaints about Danny Gokey being in the Top 50. I really hope he makes Top 36.

  • bean99

Good, I’m glad he makes it. Hopefully he’ll stick around long enough for the fan voting.

  • hypertwink

While I feel for him, I hope that he performs well because I don’t want him to advance from now on just because of his sob story.

  • JJ123

I’m so glad to hear he’s on the list of possibles!! He’s one of the top people that has stood out to me so far….and not just because of the back story, it was his voice.

  • MrsTrep

Yeah! I am glad to hear he made it. I liked him, sans tragic story. I do think this is another male year given what they have shown us so far! Makes the competition a little tougher for Danny, but I have a feeling we’ll have like 4 or 5 girls and 7 or 8 guys this year. Which will be kind of cool! We’ll see….

  • J.S.G.

One of the reasons this season is beginning to really get on my nerves….the unbearable weight of the competing back stories. I can take only so much and I’m reaching my limit.

Subtract the back story, go strictly with the voice and Danny is a very interesting contestant. Add his background as a music teacher, and it should be very interesting to see how he adapts to the pressures of the weeks ahead.

  • erennick

    competing back stories

That’s an interesting way of putting it.

I hope Danny makes it to the show bc I love the sound of his voice and his reaction when Randy told him he “was one of the best so far” was adorable.

  • Hoppy

This is VERY good news. I hope he makes it further. Even without his very touching back story, this guy really stands out vocally. I have a feeling TPTB will play his friendship with that other contestant for drama during Hollywood week, because the friend will get cut and Danny will move on… but that’s okay. So far, Danny is definitely one I’m keeping my eye on.

  • cookcricket

I won’t hold the fact that he has an incredibly sad back story against him! If he continues to preform vocally as he did in the audition I hope he’s one of the top 36!

  • IdolFanatic

He’s definitely one to watch! I almost wish that he did not have the story because he clearly has the talent to make it without the story. But from what I understand, you sign your life away to even audition and they have a right to know anything and everything about you whether you wish to talk about it on camera or not. I got the feeling he did not want to be talking about it on camera. His breakdown was almost unbearable to watch. But he must figure that the sacrifice is worth it. I just hope that they present it more carefully from now on instead of so much raw emotion. I feel for him, I really do.

  • primeminister

Interesting thought, mj. That sounds possible.

Anyways, for anyone who’s interested, a fan site for Danny, created by his cousin.

    Quite funny, this guy.

Thanks primeminister for the above link. He is funny! I liked the little “interview”.

STOP IT! STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT STOP IT!

Please stop posting the spoiler as part of the headline. Please please please please! Can I make myself sound any more teenish? I love your blog. I read it faithfully. I admit that I’m addicted to American Idol despite the intense overproduction.

One of the big reasons I like it is because I don’t know what will happen, and I want to keep it that way, but whenever I read your blog, I get the spoilers without wanting them. If you are going to announce a spoiler alert, please for the love of all that is Idol, put the spoiler in the body of your post, and not as the first line, either. Please please pretty please.

It is not possible to go through your feed and not see what the spoiler is when it is right next to the words “spoiler alert.”

    Pretty pretty please.

    Did I mention please?

    Thanks,

    Pererau

So far of all the sneak peaks have seen, this is the only one who stands out for me…regardless of back story or not. Some for me have been just ok, some talented and pretty good but this guy makes me pay attention.

I hear ya. But it’s all about SEO. If I don’t put the name in the headline, it doesn’t show up at the beginning of a google search…

  • meme

Out of all the guys that I have seen so far Danny has my backing. :wink_ee:

Yes but when you are driving people away by giving away spoilers, is it really worth it?

On the other hand, some people find this blog by googling for spoilers– I know I did! :)

  • MrsTrep

And once the top 36 is selected spoilers will be limited to song choice…. not such a big deal. But still fun to know about in advance and speculate on!

  • Niall

The only way I’ll get behind Gokey is if he and AI never bring up the dead wife again. It is very sad but we all have sad things in our history. He’s not the only widower out there. If he’s a great singer let him earn his votes based on his singing, not on sympathy and “awww, poor guy” factors.

  • IdolFanatic

Don’t count on it. This is Idol after all. I wouldn’t hold it against Danny though…Idol owns them now. They are presented how Idol wants them to be presented in these edited shows. And you can’t expect him to NEVER mention her again anyway, since his decision to go through with the audition was to honor her memory. But I do agree that his talent should be what gets him votes. However, his story will likely get him sympathy votes regardless. Asia Epperson from last season tried out just days after her father died and she still didn’t make the Top 12. Thankfully, they only mentioned that twice. So hopefully, they won’t Danny’s into the ground.

With all the sob stories that I’ve seen so far, it truly makes me appreciate David Cook all the more. He did not want Adam’s illness to be the main reason he won, and I respect him so much for that. David won based on his talent, not a sob story.

I do agree that it has gotten out of hand this year already. Definite overkill IMO. That’s a good point about Cook. He did find a way to keep his brother’s illness from becoming the focus his time on the show. He must’ve kept the story under wraps himself and then the media found out without his help. I suppose Danny could’ve done the same, but then again, his spouse passing away was kind of too big of a thing to act like it didn’t happen. And honoring her memory was what drove him to proceed with the audition. David Cook had not even planned on auditioning in the first place, so his so-called sob story didn’t really play a part in it in any way.

  • KrazeeK120

When it comes down to it, I don’t think that the sob stories carry too much weight with the voting. Let’s take a look…

    Season 1-
Kelly & Justin – no sob stories that I’m aware of

    Season 2-
Ruben & Clay – no sob stories – Clay was famous for his makeover or whatever, but it’s not like he was pulling at our heartstrings

    Season 3-
Fantasia & Diana – Fantasia had a sob story, Diana did not

    Seasons 4, 5, 6-
Carrie, Bo, Taylor, Katharine, Jordin, Blake – no sob stories there

    Season 7-
The Davids – DC had a sob story, but wasn’t discovered until later, so that doesn’t really count

In summary, I don’t worry about sob stories. They’ll only get you so far. You have to be good to win.
