This week’s theme for the Top 4–songs that shaped Rock n’ Roll–is finally broad enough that all the Idols should be able to find songs that suit their style.

The Idol picks are based on a list of songs from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, “500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll”. Here’s the list. Pick your songs for the Idols–I’ll be back with my list in a bit…

ETA: My List after the Jump…

Looking through this list, I could start a whole other conversation on how some of these songs made the list, while others didn’t *scratching head*, but I’ll leave that to another thread and just make my picks. Here they are:

Syesha Mercado -

  • “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green – Classic soul from the 70′s. She could really shine on this smooth, sexy number if she keeps the screech in check.
  • “Time is on My Side” by the Rolling Stones – A bit of a departure for her, but I think she could pull off this early blues number from the Stones.

David Cook

  • “Rosalita” by Bruce Springsteen – David could shake the CBS studios to it’s core with this joyous anthem.
  • “Layla” by Derek and the Dominoes – David could slow this up the way Eric Clapton did in a later version, or rock it up like the original.

David Archuleta -

  • “Many Rivers to Cross” by Jimmy Cliff – Another message song, but this time it’s cool.
  • “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke – See above. If Archie gets his voice back this week, he could do a lovely job with this one.

Jason Castro

  • “Uncle Johns Band” by the Grateful Dead – So funny I would pick this song, ’cause I actually hate it. But, I think it would be a good fit for Jason.
  • “All Along the Watchtower” – Jimi Hendrix – But do it more like Bob Dylan. An acoustic version has the potential to be really powerful.

These song picks aren’t my favorites, but at this stage of the game, I think the Idols have to pick big, classic songs that the audience recognizes to make it to the next round.

ETAA: If I were picking crazy – David Cook singing “London Calling” by the Clash — what I wouldn’t give to hear him sing the line “Phoney Beatlemania is biting the Dust” that would be awesome!

  • grrrr

    Considering DC picked MOTN as his favorite performance because he enjoyed surprising people by singing it straight, I’m hoping he picks some really unpredictable songs this week or at least a couple of songs that haven’t been done on this show ever. (But I would really looooove to hear “Maybe I’m Amazed because I’m selfish and that song gets to me. Also, I think he could do a really intense version of “Losing My Religion.”)
    If I were a goober like Little D, I’d pick something like “Stand By Me” and one of the Beach Boys songs on the list. I have no clue what CreepyDad would pick though. =P
    The Beach Boys would be a good choice for Jason, too. And for Syesha…I’m guessing one predictable “diva” song (Etta/Dinah) and one fun song?

  • Giggy

    I took a lot of effort to come up with, what I think, would be the best choices for our Top 4 so here it is, for what it’s worth:

    Jason –
    God Only Knows
    Your Song
    American Pie

    David C –
    (Pride) In the Name of Love
    Sweet Dreams
    The House of the Rising Sun

    David A –
    Strawberry Fields Forever
    Let’s Stay Together
    Your Song

    Syesha –
    Dancing in the Street
    The Tracks of My Tears
    People Get Ready

    I really hope someone does ‘People Get Ready’. It is a POWERFUL song and someone could have one of those ‘magic’ moments with it. However, it could also been seen as a death song.

  • http://americanidollowdown.blogspot.com/ Sherry L

    Are you about this list? I think they will be choosing songs from inductees. Why have a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame night and then have someone sing something by Guns and Roses, or any of the other people who are not in the Hall of Fame?

    I’ve seen it both ways around the web. Some say this list and some say inductees.

    Here are my picks based on inductees –

    Jason – I Shot The Sherrif and Rave On
    David A – Bridge Over Troubled Water and Somebody To Love
    Davdi C – Feelin’ Alright and We Got To Get Out Of This Place
    Syesha – Son Of A Preacher Man and Why Do Fools Fall In Love

    I will be disappointed if it turns about they are using that list. I think they should only do inductees. And I think some of the songs on that list are weird choices, that had noting to do with shaping rock and roll. Some are good, some not so good.

  • skylight1219

    Oh lands, I hate American Pie, and, I Shot the Sheriff for Jason. Those are the cheesiest of the cheese.

  • cheese

    500 songs is A LOT.

    Here’s what I picked:

    David A – Superstition and Stand By Me – Safe and predictable!

    Syesha – Gimme Some Lovin’ and Your Song

    Jason – For What It’s Worth and Maggie May

    DCook – Be My Baby or You Really Got a Hold on Me and Fortunate Son. I would not be surprised if he came out with Good Vibrations and I Want You Back just to freak me out and give me my weekly pre-show heart attack.

    These are not my favorite songs on the list, by any means, but they seem reasonable for AI. I didn’t pick any REM, U2, Dylan, etc. because they have never been cleared before. I would love to hear DC sing Losin’ My Religion and Love Will Tear Us Apart, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

  • spencer

    I really disliked your choices for David A.. I listened to them and thought they were totally not David. As Simon would say “sorreee”

  • primeminister

    I would love to hear Jason do some Dylan.

    Check out KT Tunstall’s version of Tangled Up in Blue. The sound fits him really well, but he may not like the lyrics. On the other hand, All Along the Watch Tower has lyrics that seem perfect for him. Great pick, mj!

    I just hope he comes up with GOOD songs.

    As for the others, Your Song (Elton John) would fit Archie. Syesha needs to stay far, far away from Aretha. David Cook can sing whatever the heck he wants and he’ll somehow pull it off.

  • GwendolynD

    I just know Syesha will sing something by Aretha. I hope she proves me wrong. Aretha she is not.

  • MN Sue

    I have no idea what Jason should sing. I only hope:

    a) He knows the song
    b) He puts his spin on the song with conviction and some false
    c) He’s proud of what could be his sing out song

    I could give a rat’s arse what the judges think of it.

  • primeminister

    I have no idea what Jason should sing. I only hope:

    a) He knows the song
    b) He puts his spin on the song with conviction and some false
    c) Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s proud of what could be his sing out song

    I could give a ratà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s arse what the judges think of it.

    I completely agree–with all of this.

  • GwendolynD

    I know “Change is Gonna Come” would sound good for Archie, but boy, am I getting goosebumps thinking of Cookie rockin’ that out.

    The grit…the Les Paul…that stare…. Yeah, that’ll pretty much kill me.

    I liked Slezak’s suggestion of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” for Archie. He probably wouldn’t do it as well as Clay, but it could be a semi-”Imagine” moment for him.

    Jason…hmmmmm. I’m not so sure, but he must have the guitar this week.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    Are you about this list? I think they will be choosing songs from inductees. Why have a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame night and then have someone sing something by Guns and Roses, or any of the other people who are not in the Hall of Fame?

    I’ve been to the Hall, and they feature artists in the museum whom they haven’t inducted yet, so I don’t think it’s strange that the song list would not be restricted only to inductees.

  • 4got

    BeeGees ‘Stayin’ Alive’ for Jason? Sit on judges table facing Roundy, Kristy style?

  • skylight1219

    Oh God, not “Staying’ Alive,” I hate that song. I just hope they don’t rush the show again. That was a nightmare last week.

  • mtm

    This should be a good week for Jason. So many choices.

    Bob Dylan – Times Are A Changin
    Bob Marley – No Woman No Cry
    Van Morrison – Moondance
    Ben E King – Stand By Me

  • rereader

    500 songs is A LOT.

    Word! I have a totally scribbled up pad that I can’t read, and that’s only from the songs I know already.

    Syesha: “Dancin’ in the Street” and “I Only Have Eyes for You”

    David A: “Teenager in Love” and “Stand by Me”

    David C: “This Land is Your Land” (rocked up) and “Nights in White Satin”

    Jason: “Do You Believe in Magic” and “Fire and Rain”

  • jersey

    I’ll have to think about this! I see alot of people picking songs for Jason that I would never pick for him, lol. I love his lower register so I would immediately rule out any Beach Boys song, for example. I’ll post my choices later after I’ve had time to think about it. I love threads like this, MJ!

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    I really disliked your choices for David A.. I listened to them and thought they were totally not David. As Simon would say à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“sorreeeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    That’s cool. What do you think he should sing?

  • colette

    This is a great buncha songs! I hope they do two (with no critique in the middle, please) and I hope future Idol finalists get their pick from the same glorious bunch. here goes:

    DAVID COOK: “God Only Knows” (gorgeous Beach Boy song, which would
    really surprise everyone, nice & high register)

    “Born to be Wild” (OK, weird, it’s just cause I love the blasted song, and he’s a real rocker and could just rev it up beyond belief)

    “Fortunate Son” (can’t believe anyone would risk a song this political, but it’s a great tune and outlet for Cookie’s full-on rockster persona)

    “Brown Eyed Girl” this is the Van song he’d do best, and it’s so jubilant)

    SYESHA MERCADO: “Da Doo Ron Ron Ron” (nobody’s sung much ’50s rock
    she’s a natural for Girl Group stuff)

    “My Guy” (beloved song, in her range, great to have fun with)
    “Right Place, Wrong Time” (she could take Dr. John’s voodoo song and put a really seductive spin on it)

    JASON CASTRO: “Surf City” (I’m perverse, but he just reminds me of
    the stoner-surfer set, and this is one of their anthems

    “Sunshine Superman” (oh what the heck, let’s just let him choose from the whole set of stoner classics)

    DAVID A: “Maybe I’m Amazed” (yes, wonderful song by McCartney, but I think it could be great with a touch of adolescent naivete
    “What’s Goin’ On?”(he has the pure, high voice for this great, great classic)
    “Bye,Bye Miss American Pie” (could be a winner for him)

  • skylight1219

    I really think Archuleta should stay away from “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” because he will forever be compared to Clay Aiken, and, if his voice cracks – that won’t be pretty. Clay blew that out of the water during season 2, and even recorded it as a single.

  • gabam

    Sadly, I have no clue what any of them should sing.

    I’m not a fan of Rock Music so the only songs that MJ listed that I recognized were “Let’s Stay Together” and “A Change Is Gonna Come”.

    I hope that it’s not another Beatles’ week for me because I did not recognize (nor like) most of the songs they sang on the show. *sigh*

  • MN Sue

    I think I’ll stick with a wish list for Syesha also:

    a) Anything uptempo to entertain the audience and voters
    b) Absolutely nothing to invite comparisons (Aretha, Whitney, etc…)
    c) Hot wardrobe and hair to “stimulate” the voters and contrast the boys club.
    d) Something to give me a reason to turn my Jason votes to her after, repeat, after he’s gone.

  • jpfan

    Gabam – Most of the rock songs on this list are pretty much standards at this point. What kind of music do you listen to?

    I have no suggestions myself. I’m bad at this.

  • http://whatwouldvoltairedo.blogspot.com/ palais

    I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t pick any REM, U2, Dylan, etc. because they have never been cleared before. I would love to hear DC sing Losinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ My Religion and Love Will Tear Us Apart, but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not going to hold my breath

    U2 has been cleared before by other Idol programs. It’s not an issue of artist clearance, it’s an issue over how much AI wants to pay. Canadian Idol has had songs from Radiohead and David Bowie as well, and I never thought that would clear. I’ve been using the guideline that if CBS was able to clear a song for the Rock Star series, AI could clear it for this week if they wanted to pay the money. Although I agree that Dylan songs would be impossible. I haven’t even heard Dylan done in auditions.

    My choices:

    David A.- ” God Only Knows” and ” This Land Is Your Land”
    Jason- ” Moondance” ( I’m practically begging here) and ” For What It’s Worth”
    Syesha- ” In the Midnight Hour” ( one of my favoritest songs ever) and ” You Send Me”
    David C.- In a dream world, ” Whole Lotta Love” and ” Back In Black”. In reality, “House Of The Rising Sun” and ” Sweet Dreams” ( think about it…)

  • J.S.G.

    David Cook – ‘Whipping Post’ by the Allman Bros., ‘Shape of Things’ by the Yardbirds, or a LedZep song.

    Jason Castro – ‘My My Hey Hey,’ by Neil Young, hopefully in a flannel shirt. Anything by the Talking Heads or REM would really work for Jason.

    DavidA – ‘California Dreaming,’ by the Mamas and Papas, tho I agree he could pull off any Smoky Robinson or Marvin Gaye song. But who really cares since JeffA is making all the decisions.

    Syesha – Has already done Aretha’s ‘Think’(audition) and ‘Chain of Fools’(Hollywood week) which leaves ‘I Never Loved a Man,’ which is totally in her mindset and wheelhouse.
    For the slower song, I would prefer ‘BlueBerry Hill’ bu Fats Domino.
    Faster song would be a well choreographed R/B version of Chuck Berry’s ‘Rock and Roll Music.’

    Funny, I was thnking Syesha pull off the Mick Jagger thing too, was hoping ‘The Last Time’ would be on the list. It isn’t. ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash’ won’t work but ‘Time is on My Side’ will, so that is a truly brilliant choice.

  • jane

    David A – Stand By Me by Ben E. King and California Dreamin’ by the Mamas & Papas
    David C – Fortunate Son by CCR and Sunshine of Your Love by Cream or Hotel California by the Eagles
    Jason C – A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke and Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding or Light My Fire by the Doors
    Syesha – I Heard it Through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye and Let’s Stay Together by Al Green

  • s fl sizzler

    Just love the choice of “Moondance” and “Do u Believe in Magic’ for Jason, as well as “Fortunate Son” for DC. However, they may be a little sick of picking the older tunes as opposed to the newer ones. I really would like to hear something upbeat from all of them as opposed to ballads and anthems. Jason needs to get back to injecting those subtle vocal nuances into his performances … it seems to me that he’s shyed away from singing the way he’s used to, in favor of attempting to compete with the more powerful voices … something that he can never do. His unique charm to me is his phrasing, timing and the fact that his voice does get weaker in spots forcing him into an unexpected falsetto. If that even makes any sense. He is rarely off tune though. PLUS … he needs to regain the confidence to sing with conviction. He has it in him to be glorious if he brings it and wants it badly enough.

  • rereader

    MJ, “Uncle John’s Band” would indeed suit Jason, but I can’t imagine anything by the Grateful Dead coming in at under 8 minutes, LOL!

    It was fun trying to pick out songs from that candybox of a list, but in the end, they should each pick what they love, not what they think they should sing–that way we’d get truly individual performances, which would be awesome.

    Never happen, though.

  • wildcatatheart

    There are wwwwaaaayyyy too many songs on this list. Most of them I am not familiar with.

    I think David C could come up with just about any of those songs and make it work.

    I think David A needs to find something different than his norm. The judges won’t have anything but praise….no matter the song choice or quality.

    Jason, I have absolutely no idea.

    Syesha should sing “Pride (In the name of love)” It was redone by the guys who were behind C&C Music factory and it was done very well. I think she could pull that one off. She does need to avoid Aretha though.

  • sumidol

    Jason just go out and do the drums from the Beach Boys song Wipe Out and blow everyone away. Love your voice already and I dont even know if it is on that list. Go out and do it and just say you thought it was on there, if it isnt

    I could give a ratà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s arse what the judges think of it

    And – what she said

  • mtm

    I read that the reason Jason was not seen on Idol before the top 24 was becasue he kept singing songs that didn’t get clearance. His initial audition was Gnarls Barkley “Crazy”. One person in the songwriting team refused to give permission so it was never seen. Supposedly it was one of Cowell’s favorite auditions.

    I had Buffalo Springfield “For What It’s Worth” on my Jason list but I thought, even though it’s a classic, it might be taken as too political. Don’t want to piss off any voters.

  • Karen

    Jason – Blowin’ in the Wind, Take it Easy, Brown-Eyed Girl, Sounds of Silence

    Syesha – Do You Believe in Magic, Tracks of my Tears, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

    David A – Your Song, Fire & Rain, Bridge Over Troubled Water (secretly hoping he bombs since I LUUUUUUUUUUUUV Clay)

    David C – Somebody to Love, Brown-Eyed Girl, Reelin’ in the Years, Heart of Gold

  • jersey

    Okay, I’m not good at this – there are way too many choices! Here we go:

    David A – I think “Stand by Me” would be a great choice as would “California Dreamin’” (thanks JSG, I had something else picked out but I liked your suggestion better.

    Syesha – I found a female covering “Moondance” by Van Morrison on Youtube. I think Syesha could do a great job with this. I would also like her to “step out of her box” with something like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper.

    Cookie – Someone has to do Elvis Costello and I think Cook could do “Pump It Up” and really get the crowd into it. I think it would also be interesting to hear him do some Neil Young (as opposed to Jason, who I think is the obvious Neil Young choice.) He could do “Down by the River” or “Heart of Gold” to keep it recognizable.

    Finally, Jason – so many choices. I think Jason should stay away from “singer” songs – those known to be sung by great vocalists to avoid the comparisons. I couldn’t narrow this one down very well but here’s my list: “The Weight” by The Band; “Groovin’ ” by The Young Rascals.

    I would really love to hear “Graceland” by Paul Simon but I don’t think enough people are familiar with it and I think the voters need to know the songs this week in order for the contestants to shine.

    My final two choices for Jason would be “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” by CSN&Y or “Late for the Sky” by Jackson Browne. Those are really my first two choices for him but I don’t know that they can be adequately condensed into 1 min. 30 secs.

  • holeighannie

    Sooo many songs! This may take awhile to go through…

    Jason — I’ve had these picked since Thursday. Tom Petty The Heartbreakers “American Girl” and Elton John’s “Your Song”. If you listen to his pre-Idol stuff, like “Someday”, I really think he could pull off “American Girl”. And it would be completely different from what he’s done all season, which would be awesome. “Your Song” would just be beautiful. I’d also rotate “Maybe I’m Amazed” in there too.

    Since I’m not a fangirl about the rest, I’ll be making generalized comments, haha.

    DC — CCR could be great for him, it would really suit his voice and he wouldn’t have to change it up. Then he could do something not-rockish and mix it up; I’ve seen people mentioning the Beach Boys, that could be alright.

    Syesha — She’s going to be completely predictable, we all know that, haha. Which could screw her over with all of the comparisons. I’m hoping she does one soft song and resists all of her tendencies to oversing, because she could sound beautiful.

    Archie — Let me search for something innocent here…”Brown Eyed Girl” could be good. Maybe some Jackson 5.

    Questions: How is “Purple Rain” not on that list for Prince The Revolution? That song…OhEmGee, how I love that.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    Jason- ” Moondance”

    Alas, Van Morrison is another one of those artists who refuses to clear songs for Idol.

  • s fl sizzler

    JASON needs to ROCK OUT a little … I agree! He is my absolute fave … so hoping he brings the goods and knocks those judges out of their seats and onto the floor on their surly little (BIG = Randy) arses.

  • cheese

    I’m finding that the problem with a lot of the classic rock songs for DC is that he tends to choose love/relationship songs, because that’s the kind of song he writes. I can totally see why he picked Always Be My Baby and All I Really Need is You, based on the lyrics. So as much as I think he would kick ass on Fortunate Son or House of the Rising Sun, I don’t think he would pick songs like these.

    Now I’m thinking I want to hear him sing Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.” He even has a “heart of glass” lyric in one of his songs.

  • MN Sue

    LOL, sumidol. I truly hope you get your percussion wish before you blow a gasket! However, you’re probably gonna have ta wait until the tour. (Good things are worth waiting for, eh?)

  • MrsTrep

    ITA with cheese and whomever else pulled out the Buffalo Springfield “For What It’s Worth” for Jason. I think I may have posted it in the thread when the theme was announced by MJ, or I just posted it in my head more likely, as a suggestion. I think he’d do great with just him and his guitar.

    And to whomever suggested “Nights In White Satin” I went directly to Sundance Head’s disaster from last season! And while “Whole Lotta Love” might be a good choice for DC, Daughtry rocked that pretty hard on tour….

  • dancin

    i dont really have songs for all of em

    i DONT WANT TO HEAR david A do maybe i’m amazed cuz its one of my favs

    neil young… jason or david c should really do one of his songs from the list
    it could be amoment for either of em

    i can’t wait for tomorrow… just hope they all do their best

  • jane

    Hey Sumidol – That is the best suggestion yet for Jason. I hope he plays it with his shirt off and the dreads flying.

  • MrsTrep

    There are YouTube (if they haven’t been taken down) videos (duh) out there of Jason doing Crazy and a Sublime song. They are what made me a fan. I LOVED them. His ‘wheelhouse’ has nothing to do with most of what he’s sung on this show. The joys of the ‘themes’….

  • mtm

    MJ – I remember a past idol (only remember his Cowell nickname “pencil salesman”) sang Van Morrison’s “Crazy Love”

    Jon Peter Lewis – was his name!

  • s fl sizzler

    Ooooh ……. American Girl would be GREAT for Jason. Too bad on Van Morrison. However, at this point it just seems truly silly and even exceedingly stupid for an artist not to allow them to sing their songs … I guess they are denying the rights under the guise of protecting their artistic integrity. But heck … who doesn’t benefit from the kind of peak in sales and notoriety that these appearances genarate.
    If the IDOLS perform it badly, it makes the artists look that much better and if they knock it out of the park with a great song, they get the claim to fame for having written it. Seems that their reasoning is never that they are fearful that the IDOL will do it better … so what’s the true risk from their perspective?

  • jane

    Mrs Trep – you can hear Jason’s song on this website too.

    http://www.daydreamingboy.com/music.htm

  • holeighannie

    His à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹wheelhouseà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ has nothing to do with most of what heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sung on this show. The joys of the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹themesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

    Fabulous observation, MrsTrep. I think “Over the Rainbow”, “Hallelujah”, etc. are in said wheelhouse, but he’s got such a funkier upbeat side that we’ve rarely gotten to see on the show. That’s why I’m really excited for this week!

  • sumidol

    I know MN and Jane – I am going to go to that darn tour this year in San Diego – Hope to see some of you there??

  • MrsTrep

    Thank you holeighannie! I imagine a lot of people (that meaning the casual AI veiwer who lacks the obsession level of some :embarrassed_ee: ) would be surprised at some of the stuff/style of Jason given his choice of any song he’d like. What I’ve found links to here and at other places has yet to be done on the AI stage.

    :drunk_tb: Here’s to high hopes for the upbeat kick ass side of Jason to arrive this week!

    Confirmed. Archie also sang this during Hollywood week. Danger Mouse would not clear it.

  • http://whatwouldvoltairedo.blogspot.com/ palais

    Well, DC singing ” London Calling” would be the ultimate for me. My favorite Idol singing a song from my favorite band?
    As for Jason singing ” Moondance”, I know Van Morrison won’t clear it, but I figure if I keep putting it out there with happy, positive thoughts, maybe I’ll catch a break and Jason will get to sing one of the greatest songs ever.
    As for “Layla”- one of the great guitar songs, and in reality only three minutes long ( the last four is all outro). But it’s such a guitar song, and not really a singer’s song. I’d love to hear it, but I don’t think that ” Layla” ( and other classics like ” Stairway”, “Smoke On The Water”, ” Free Bird”, ” Baba O’Reilly”) are suitable for what is primarily a ” singing” competition.
    I can get behind ” Rosalita”, because it’s my favorite Springsteen song.
    On another site, a friend of mine and I have been discussing why they couldn’t do a Ramones week. Less need to cut songs for time, they’re all two minutes long, and Syesha could even sing ” Baby I Love You”. Not to mention hilarity ensues as poor David A. tries to find an appropriate song.

  • sumidol

    I can just imagine Cook singing the House Of The Rising Sun and blowin me away. (Danger Mouse LOL) and Jason – young man – you had better do the same with your songs.

  • dante

    Jane – Thank you Thank you for the link to the Jason website!!!! I now have put Crazy etc on my iPod – I love Jason’s voice so much and his phrasing is amazing! I already had all his AI performances but love these other songs.

  • mtm

    I didn’t see “People Get Ready” on the list. Jason should definitely consider this song.

    My all-time favorite singer Eva Cassidy did a version he could swipe:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKqtdNxOs00

  • cheese

    If I were picking crazy – David Cook singing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“London Callingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by the Clash à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ what I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t give to hear him sing the line à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Phoney Beatlemania is biting the Dustà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ that would be awesome!

    LOL! This week would be a lot more fun if they weren’t stuck with picking the Idol-safe songs. There were probably given a list that included Stevie, Aretha, Michael Jackson, anything Motown, Bohemian Rhapsody, Bridge Over Troubled Water and The Letter. I wouldn’t mind DCook going home this week if he could go out singing London Calling and I Will Dare. I still think he might try an early 80s alternative song for his Depeche Mode-loving big brother, but it probably wouldn’t be a smart choice.

  • dante

    Just reading some of these song choices is greating me SO PUMPED for tomorrow night. I just hope we aren’t disappointed like last week when they cut the songs so short etc yet had time for the stupid judge’s jibberish.

    I love People Get Ready – hadn’t heard Eva’s version before – love it.

    You guys have come up with some interesting choices – there are a few songs I don’t recognize but maybe if I youtube them I will. This thread is so fun!

  • rher

    I would like Jason to sing American Girl (Tom Petty). I think that would be awesome.

    I think that DC will try something as new and hip as possible. Perhaps Smells Like Teen Spirit. DA will probably go the other way and do some old classic number with glory notes (and runs thrown in). I agree with a poster above that Syesha will try Aretha.

  • Sparkles

    What I wouldn’t give to hear Archie sing “Sympathy For The Devil” by The Rolling Stones or “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)” by The Beastie Boys.

  • dancin

    omg lmao i read on another board someone choosing like a virgin for DavidA i choked on my coffee lmao

  • http://www.myspace.com/coffeygirlb bethanysuzanne

    I like Fire and Rain, and Something by Dylan for Jason. I LOVE American Pie, but only for Don Mclean, plus it would be near impossible to condense that song down to 1:30 seconds!.

  • Sparkles

    If Archie sang “Like A Virgin,” Daddy Dearest would go all apecrap on Nigel.

    As for David Cook, it doesn’t really matter what he sings. If he could get me to like a Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson song, he probably could get me to like a song by the freakin’ Eagles.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/ linda4262

    DC- Night Moves-(Bob Seger)
    The Night they drove Ol Dixie down-(The Band)

    DA-Spanish Harlem-(Ben E King)
    Go Your Own Way-(Fleetwood Mac)

    Syesha- Put a Spell on You (Bette Midler Version)
    Heard it through the grapevine-(Marvin Gaye)

    JC- Roxanne-(The Police)
    Help Me-(Joni Mitchell)

  • primeminister

    I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“People Get Readyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  on the list. Jason should definitely consider this song.

    My all-time favorite singer Eva Cassidy did a version he could swipe:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKqtdNxOs00

    Thanks for the link. That’s actually perfect! The lyrics are gorgeous as well.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

    That list is daunting – thank you to those of you who went through the whole thing and made selections.

    I think I would like DC to do “Walk the Line” – not the Chris Daughtry cover of the cover inspired by Live, but more like Social D’s version, complete with rippin guitar. That. Would. Rock.

    I’m planning to go to the rehearsal tomorrow, so I’ll let y’all know what I see and hear. :biggrin_wp:

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

    Oops. I used a banned word without meaning to. MJ can you fix my post or should I redo it with a different adjective?

  • Karen

    Michael did Go Your Own Way during 70s week.

  • rita205

    Has anyone pointed out yet, MJ, that “Time is on my Side” was originally done by the Queen of New Orleans Soul, Irma Thomas? Great choice for Syesha!

    Rita

  • joydrop

    What I would like to hear them sing, despite the fact that it’s probably completely unrealistic to expect any of them to sing these songs:

    Archie:

    -“Just The Way You Are” by Billy Joel. Only if he insists on singing a slow sappy song.
    -“Uptight (Everything’s Alright)” by Stevie Wonder. The judges say not to tackle Stevie unless you can nail it. Archulet can nail it. My main problem with Archie is that he hasn’t embrased his potential, and as a result he’s really boring. If he can bring personality and fun to his performaces this week I might actually be ok with him making it to the finals.

    Cookie:
    I actually had a hard time finding stuff for him, because he could do pretty much whatever he wanted to and end up being awesome, but here are some that I, persoanlly, think would be interesting to hear him sing.

    -“I Got A Woman” by Ray Charles. He could make this more of a rock song instead of a soul song, and I think it would be amazing (Here’s John Mayer covering it. I like the Original better, but it’s interesting nonetheless).
    -“Don’t You Want Me Baby” by Human League. Cheesy 80′s rock and he would do so, so well with it. It’s a perfect time for 80′s throwback, it’s trendy right now so the younger kids would love it and the people in their 30′s who grew up in the 80′s would love it too.
    -“Gimme Some Lovin’” by Spencer Davis group. It’s fun. He needs to do a fun song!

    Jason:
    -“I want You Back” by The Jackson 5 as covered by KT Tunstall. Oh. My. Gosh. He would blow this out of the water. I hope he does this song!
    -“Fire and Rain” by James Taylor. I know he won’t, and i know it would be boring to most people, but a girl can dream, can’t she?
    -“Time” by Culture Club. Think he could pull it off? I think he could. Seems to be kind of his style of lyrics from what I’ve heard of his original work too.
    -“Brown Eyed girl” by Van Morrison. (I couldn’t find the original on YouTube.. weird.) Might be too cliche, but I would love it!

    Syesha:
    -“Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean” by Ruth Brown. If she could pull this off I think it would bre really REALLY good, and she could have a lot of fun doing it. I honestly hope she picks this song because I want to hear her sing it!
    -“Tell It Like It Is” by Aaron Neville. It’s a pretty song musically, but the lyrics are sassy enough that she could bring some attitude to it.

  • rita205

    I keep seeing the suggestion of “Knights in White Satin” for Cook. Puh-leeze!! That is such a pompous piece of you-know-what – it would only invite him being called arrogant and cocky. Take it from someone who had to live through the 70′s with people who thought that song was deep and heavy, it sucks as a choice for him.

    Rita

  • justshootme

    There’s just so much good stuff on that list it’s hard to pick. On a side note after watching a kajillion youtubes, it’s interesting how many of the singers are just sitting on a stool or behind a guitar for these songs. I just hope Castro picks well and has a good authentic performance. Screw the judges.

    Didn’t Syesha kill with Chain of Fools in Hollywood? I’m thinking she may repeat that.

  • sumidol

    Do they sing two or three songs this week?

  • rereader

    sumidol–It’s still just a one-hour show, it had BETTER be only two songs!

  • Skylark

    For David A:
    Up On the Roof
    Your Song
    Dancin in the Streets
    You Send Me
    People Get Ready

  • sumidol

    Ok, rereader – thanks

  • calimari

    I get worried whenever there is a list w/ so many great songs. It seems that’s when they pick something awful that no one has heard of or something extra cheezy because they like the title, it’s grandma’s favorite, or some other lame excuse.

  • colette

    This is fun — let’s start our own radio station!

    Coupla thoughts on others’ picks:

    I also had the Neil Young idea for DC. I’m wondering, MJ or anyone, if Mr. Young would clear the rights to his music? Then somebody could do “Impeach the President Now”! (just joking, no offense intended to anyone)

    The idea of DC doing The Band or Bob Seger doesn’t wash with me, because this guy for all his talent is NOT a Southern rock kind of fella in my book. That was really the parvenu of Bo Bice and Taylor Hicks. Cookie has said he’s a Midwesterner through and through.

    I thought too about Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but beside the rights problems (and Courtney Love is a demon about rights), they just aren’t melodic enough for this show and this artist. Plus the lyrics of “Jeremy” would be bleeped.

    I think we’ve got a consensus for “Fortunate Son”, but I imagine we’ll all be pretty surprised by what everyone picks……It seems to me that only the two David’s have any depth of knowledge about rock history, too bad considering that really helped Taylor, Fantasia, Clay, etc…..

  • dancin

    sundance head did jeremy last year
    blake did roxanne (paula picked it or the producers)
    i dont think its a good idea to rehash last years song choices lol

  • rita205

    Someone earlier suggested Talking Heads for Jason. Michael Slezak did, too – he suggested “Once in a Lifetime” – LOL, I loved that:

    And you may ask yourself-well…how did I get here?

    and,

    And you may ask yourself
    What is that beautiful house?
    And you may ask yourself
    Where does that highway go?
    And you may ask yourself
    Am I right? …am I wrong?
    And you may tell yourself
    My god!…what have I done?

    He could sing in with an ironic little smile, letting everyone know that he is not only in on the joke, but that he is writing the joke.

    Rita

  • holeighannie

    colette: I know you may be referring to Seger’s music style, but he was born in the midwest: Detroit. So I always think of that when I hear his music, which Cook may as well.

  • jersey

    I don’t think David Byrne will clear any Talking Heads tunes. He won’t even talk to other Talking Heads members, LOL!
    ETA: Not that ANY of the songs I suggested have a chance of being cleared!

  • http://whatwouldvoltairedo.blogspot.com/ palais

    Jersey, a true statement if I have ever heard one. Which is a shame, because Jason singing ” Once In a Lifetime” would be awesome. ” Take Me To the River” could be used, if was on the list, because it’s actually an Al Green song. But CBS was able to clear both ” Burning Down The House” and ” Psycho Killer” for Rock Star, so you never know.
    I said once before that the list started out at 500, but after clearance and lyrical considerations, it would probably be closer to 300. ” Legalize It” would not even be shown to the Idols, trust me.

  • jersey

    Yeah, after I wrote that, I remembered “Psycho Killer” being on Rockstar, I think that show had a little more “street cred” than idol did, though.

  • Frogpond

    I watched Canadian Idol (well online ) and Moondance was sung by one of them ,so I wonder how they could get it and not the American Idol .

  • Frogpond

    I have been looking over the list ,it seems most of the songs are older songs .To bad about that ,seems like they want new but are giving them old .

  • rereader

    it seems most of the songs are older songs

    But goodies!

  • Frogpond

    For Jason (cause he is my favorite )
    I like Take it Easy I recall the guys season 5 did this as a group number on top 24 night .

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

    MJ – I remember a past idol (only remember his Cowell nickname à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“pencil salesmanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ) sang Van Morrisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Crazy Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Jon Peter Lewis – was his name!

    Yes he did. And when they repeated the show in Canada a few days later, his audition was pulled because Van changed his mind. Same deal when they repeated the Hawaii episode later in the Season.

    When Idol Rewind Season 3 reruns in September, I’m betting JPL’s audition will have to be edited then as well. Subsequent Idols have tried, including JPL and Taylor Hicks–to get Van Morrison songs cleared and they have been unable.

    I would not hold my breath with this crew either.

  • holeighannie

    mj: Taylor tried to get one of Van’s songs cleared? I never knew that. Which one was it, or do you not know the specifics? I always wanted to hear him sing “Crazy Love”, as I read it was on his pre-Idol set list.

  • Soulkaren

    I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“People Get Readyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  on the list. Jason should definitely consider this song.

    I LOVE this song. If anyone’s interested, here’s a beautiful video with Taylor Hicks singing “People Get Ready”. This was posted on Martin Luther King Day, and it’s amazing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqcA3pcxvwM

  • colette

    holeighannie — thanks for the correction on Bob Seger! You’re right, of course, he’s as Midwest as Velveeta. (as a native/former Michigander, I can say that.)

    I guess it’s that meat-and-potatoes, working-man rock that I don’t see Cookie doing. He’s more playful, and not as macho (I mean this in the best way).

    LOL about Van Morrison changing his mind about rights. He’s such a great musician, and such a head case. He used to play gigs where he’d get annoyed, turn his back to the audience, stomp off after a couple songs. Oh well, genius is allowed….

    “Once in a Lifetime” is way sophisticated for Jason, I think. It’s also a story-song that needs more than 2 minutes to get across. But I love the idea of him doing Jimmy Cliff, “Many Rivers to Cross” maybe. He could use that reggae lilt well, and he’s already got the dreads!

  • justshootme

    I think Annie Lennox blew Many Rivers to Cross out of the water on IGB. I’m not sure it would be a good choice for that reason. Although I’d love to hear it.

  • jane

    Thank you Soulkaren for this link to Taylor Hicks singing People Get Ready. He was my favorite idol and I love his soulful voice.

  • Toot Suite

    JASONà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Billy Joel – Just the Way You Are (nod to the moms & swoon factor)AND The Young Rascals – Good Lovinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ (super-fun while not actually covering The Dead) Thoughts?

  • holeighannie

    colette: You’re welcome! I’m from MI too, from the Lansing area. I completely agree with what you’re saying about DC working man rock. I can’t really see him pulling it off like Taylor did (I didn’t watch Bo’s season), I think it would be weird, haha.

  • grrrr

    omg lmao i read on another board someone choosing like a virgin for DavidA i choked on my coffee lmao

    Heh. There’s an Incubus cover of that song so it would be more likely (but not a lot) to see DC or even Jason do it (there’s also a neat Jack Johnson cover of ‘Holiday’, btw). But after crazy Keith’s rendition from S2, no one should ever attempt that one.

  • http://danielsisco.com Phlophonic

    I’d love to hear Jason doing “I Shot the Sheriff”.
    A blend between the Marley and Clapton versions would probably be perfect for him!

  • http://whatwouldvoltairedo.blogspot.com/ palais

    I watched Canadian Idol (well online ) and Moondance was sung by one of them ,so I wonder how they could get it and not the American Idol .

    I thought I remembered wrong. Thanks for telling me otherwise. I was going nuts, because I swore to my friends it had been on CI, but they thought I was crazy.

  • http://http://ladymela99.livejournal.com/ princessmela

    People get Ready would be amazing for Jason! Wow that would probably be a momment.

  • weelassie

    Every time I hear “Time is on my side” – it reminds me of a creepy movie Denzel Washington did. It was one of my all-time, least favorite movies i’ve seen.

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

    Fuck, and I thought I’d recognized a fair number of songs on that list. So I AM going to have to wind up on Youtube anyway.

    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d love to hear Jason doing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Shot the Sheriffà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

    Doesn’t that song repeat the same line over, and over, and over, and over again?

  • baxter

    hehehehehhe…poor poor Hisaki. Good Luck!!!!!!

  • http://danielsisco.com Phlophonic

    Hisaki, I Shot the Sheriff has four different verses and yes, 1 very familar chorus. The charm of the song is largely in the music which sets the stage for Jason to bring his own performance of the vocals to the table. And if you can listen to that song while sitting completely still, you have no groove in your blood. ;-)

    I just think it would be a good idea for him to do something funky and groove-able…

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

    I remember a deputy singing the chorus of that song for an audition on Idol a few seasons back (proud of that chorus, wasn’t he?). I think that’s probably why I have such a grudge against that song, lol.

    I will go listen for the sake of listening, anyway.

  • longsong

    Ooh, Phlophonic – I still would NOT like Jason to do that song. It makes me think of some drunken guy and the chorus is the only part he can remember so he sings it over and over and over and over….. :drunk_tb: :eek_wp:

  • later

    I would like to hear Jason do …
    I Want You Back by Michael Jackson..but do it KT Tunstall style…

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=ln5NhItXJ_U

    And I have to say David A. singing You Cant Touch This …could be funny and great!

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

    I have to agree… no “I Shot the Sheriff” for Jason.

    I like the “For What it’s Worth” suggestion. I haven’t had a chance to go through the whole list, but maybe he could do a folksy version of “Biko” with some drumming for those who seem to want that. I think he should stay away from drums, personally. Let the band do it.

    I would love Cookie to tackle a Sam Cooke number. Maybe “A Change is Gonna Come” and then rock out with something. I like the “Rosalita” suggestion.

    Syesha needs something uptempo and fun for at least one number. She’s better at that.

    David A? Well, I suggest “All the Young Dudes.” ;-)

  • http://www.myspace.com/gundomom CarieB

    I would love Cookie to tackle a Sam Cooke number. Maybe à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Change is Gonna Comeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and then rock out with something. I like the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Rosalitaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ suggestion.

    I like these ideas too.

    But I want Cookie to rock out with “Ring of Fire” – the Social D version. I know he doesn’t have the same lower register as Mike Ness, but he could totally Rock. That. Song. I would be in squeee heaven.

    I am planning to go the rehearsal taping tomorrow, so stay tuned.

  • joydrop

    DC doing Social D? I might have a stroke! haha.

    Someone suggested the same for Jason in chat the other night, and I think it’d be a great choice for him too. Hell, he could do anything KT for the show and I’d probably love it. But I doubt she’d clear for Jason even after she had to clear for Kat in S5. Darn.

    Archie…You Can’t Touch This…LOL.

  • jersey

    Ooooh, Carie, have a great time, and don’t forget the spoilers!

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    Hmmm.. So I’ve been thinking about this a little, even though I haven’t really combed the list a lot.

    Anyway. After our discussion in chat last night of whether or not Cookie plays the piano (he apparently has piano playing credit on “Analog Heart”), I got to thinking about this – if DCook did a version even similar to this of “Losing My Religion”, I would melt into a puddle of fangirl goo.

    ETA: Carie, have so much fun at the dress rehearsal! Can’t wait to read what your impressions are!! I’m such a jellus h8r. :)

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

    Have fun, Carie! Also a jellus h8er.

    So, do we know for sure that they are limited to this list? I see some suggestions not on the list, but by artists on the list.

  • cheese

    Wow, I never heard that KT Tunstall cover of “I Want You Back” before – it’s awesome. Jason could probably get away with doing another cover of a cover this week. I’m not sure he would sell it as well as KT does, but I’d like to see him try.

    However, even now, six weeks after Billie Jean and three or four original arrangements later, DC cannot. He is the song stealer forevah and evah. This would probably extend to singing any song ever covered on Rockstar, unfortunately. I hope he chose very carefully this week.

  • grrrr

    Ahh, the one time I enjoyed that douchenozzle Ryan. And DC has a much better voice. Maybe if us Cooktards wish hard enough, it’ll happen?

    The boy has piano credit on Analog Heart? Still, like from what I caught last night while I was busy finishing homework, I doubt he did much of the piano work.

    I’ve heard of that song and its apparently strange lyrics. That version was great, though. I’d melt on the spot, too, if he did that. :) *hopeful…hopeful*

    Oh, have fun Carie!

  • jersey

    I also loved Ryan Starr’s cover of “Losin’ My Religion”. But I kind of agree with Cheese, if it’s covered on Youtube, someone, somewhere will call Cookie on covering a cover. I think all of the other’s could get away with it, however.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    I know à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Change is Gonna Comeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ would sound good for Archie, but boy, am I getting goosebumps thinking of Cookie rockinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ that out.

    The grità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦the Les Paulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦that stareà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦. Yeah, thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll pretty much kill me.

    You and me both, my dear. You and me both.

    He is the song stealer forevah and evah. This would probably extend to singing any song ever covered on Rockstar, unfortunately.

    Oh I know, cheese. And for some reason, I doubt AI would pony up the dough that REM would probably want to clear it anyway. But I can still dream. :)

    I wouldn’t think that Bob Dylan songs would be so hard to clear, since there was a Dylan theme week on NGAB last fall.

    I hope the contestants make some interesting song choices this week, and not the same ol’, same ol’.

    Going to comb the list a little more… :)

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

    Screw the media. If DC comes out with Ryan Star’s cover of Losin’ My Religion on piano, Cooktardistan will be in heaven for those 5 minutes. And that’s good enough, no? :)

    Although in reality, I can only imagine the backlash if he does another cover of a cover. Ugh.

    I love Sweet Dreams for DC!

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

    No, I mean 5 minutes. Well, 5 minutes including what is to be some hopeful praise. And if that’s not enough, I just like seeing the intro videos purely because it’s more DC to look at. LOL.

    If not a cover of a cover, how about the acoustic version of Radiohead’s Black Star? He could change it up a little, if he wanted to. I don’t know. Just a suggestion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy5FtCsf3d4

  • spanishfan

    I have fantasized about Cook singing Layla Clapton style with guitar.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    That was an interesting version of John Mayer doing “I Got a Woman”. I liked it, because I lurrrrrrrve John Mayer (even though that curly fro he was sporting back in the days of that taping – not so much), but I agree… I like the original better. Not sure if I see Cookie singing it though.

    And okay – I lurrrrrve KT Tunstall, too, and I love that version of her doing “I Want You Back”!! I agree, Jason could likely pull that cover of a cover off. :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    Ooh, I just thought of something – I could totally see Jason doing an acoustic version of “(Sittin on) the Dock of the Bay.”

  • abbysee

    It might be interesting to hear David A do a sparer more intimate Bridge Over Troubled water, because unlike many I absolutely hated the cheesy, over the top Clay Aiken version. I think of that song sung reverently like the original, no choir, just Archie with piano or guitar. It could be a moment. That being said, I really hope he does it that way, or not at all. My choices are: (I couldn’t limit myself to two in most cases, so many great songs……

    For Syesha:

    Dancing in the Street
    Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean (weeks ago I would never have suggested that, but after ALW week, I think she can)
    Or I agree with Mj Let’s Stay Together, Trenyce did it in Season 2, would be interesting to see her take on it or
    River Deep Mountain High

    David C:

    Stairway To Heaven
    Lawdy Miss Claudy (Toss your panties)
    The Thrill is Gone (Toss ‘em again)
    Bohemian Rhapsody (just as a point of reference)

    Jason:

    Tracks of My Tears
    Maybe I’m Amazed (This could be a moment)
    Tell it Like it Is (This could be fun)
    Fire & Rain

    David A

    A Change is Gonna Come! Please sing this song, it fits your message theme and your voice like a glove
    I Want You back done in any style you want KT Tunstall or Michael Jacksons
    Why Do Fools Fall in Love
    What’s Going On

    I think this is going to be a great night, I don’t think anyone will choke or bore. There are some incredible songs of this list. I could have chosen another 4 for each of them. Who’da thunk it?

  • http://americanidollowdown.blogspot.com/ Sherry L

    A lot of interesting choices. I am looking forward to it, although I hate getting my hopes up about certain songs and then having them go a completely different direction. Oh well, as long as it’s good.

    MJ – I saw your reply to my post way back at the beginning, and what you said makes sense about the Hall of Fame featuring artists that are not necessarily inducted yet. I still hope they stick to inductees though. I like that better.

    David C -
    (Pride) In the Name of Love

    I love the idea, but the thing about U2 is either you do it so amazing that people are speechless, or change it enough so it doesn’t sound like karaoke. You can’t mess with U2 (they’re like the Whitney of rock or something?). So, if he could do it well I think it would be phenomenal, but I don’t know if I have that much faith in Cookie yet….

    As far as A Change Is Gonna come for him, I didn’t even think of that and it would be beautiful!

    So many good choices this week, people!

    Oh, also, going off of Slezak’s Zeppelin idea for Syesha, Stairway to Heaven would be awesome if they could find a way to condense it to such a short song! I just really want to hear a girl sing that song with an acoustic guitar… so pretty.

    I thought too about Nirvana and Pearl Jam

    I doubt DC would do Nirvana. I saw an interview where he said that Nirvana is “not for me.” He does say that that he likes Pearl Jam

    I don’t think DC would touch Nirvana or Pearl Jam (especially since the only Pearl Jam song is “Jeremy.”)

    I don’t know what he’s going to do, but I hope I don’t open up the spoilers on TMZ tomorrow and see “Yakkity Yak.” I think DC could do something molten hot with a girly 60s song like “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.”

  • Margaux

    I want to see Cook tackle an early rock wailer, like Johnny B Goode, Summertime Blues, or (for his homies) Kansas City, then he can do his emo-grunge stuff that I won’t know. If he actually wants me to melt, he would do Late for the Sky.

    There were lots of funky folkies on the list for Jason — Sittin on the Dock of the Bay would be very nice. I’m partial to Taylor’s People Get Ready, but Jason could do it nicely.

    I want Archie to do something in his comfort level but upbeat, Stand By Me was my first pick. Bye Bye Love, Big Girls Don’t Cry could be fun (would love to see him try Frankie Valli’s high notes), and I agree that if he feels vocally confident, he could make us forget Clay’s Bridge Over Troubled Water..

    Syesha — River Deep Mountain High, Sly’s Dance to the Music (all the squares go home!) or Bonnie Raitt’s version of Runaway. Slow song — All I Have to do is Dream

    A tiny DC spoiler from the Knoll thread at TwoP.
    From notmylover:

    I’m in contact with a friend of his, but I promised not to tell, sorry! Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut completely. I’m super excited, though (which is why i couldn’t quite keep my mouth shut)! I will give you a hint: one’s definitely more pop (though I have no idea about his arrangements, so that could change) and one is more classic rock. Neither particularly ballady. I’m guessing the Les Paul on one and no guitar on the other. Guessing. Since we got locked out of our Cook thread (which I think is totally unjustifiable the day before the top 4 show, btw, but I guess we were bad posters–who’s TCO now, bitches?), I’m semi-spoiling here.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

    Mr Cook should sing:

    1. Be-Bop-A-Lula
    (You can imagine the twist I am thinking)

    2. The Letter

  • cheese

    I just found this on TWOP from someone claiming to be in contact with a friend of David’s:

    I do happen to know the songs David C. is singing tomorrow (neither of them too outlandish, btw, one more than the other perhaps), and I don’t think we will be getting any lackluster performances from him (and the fangirls are gonna go nuts for one in particular). Word on the street is his spirits are up and he is looking forward to kicking ass (my words, not his).

    …one’s definitely more pop (though I have no idea about his arrangements, so that could change) and one is more classic rock. Neither particularly ballady.

    ETA: Oops, manny beat me to it, but I think I added a little more from one of the OP’s other posts

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

    That K T Tunstall cover of I Want You Back would be absolutely wonderful for Jason. I hope he and David Cook rock the house tomorrow night. I would love to see a Castro/Cook final two. They could go on the talk circuit together like Clay and Ruben did – Cookie doing the comedy and Jason just grinning like Ruben did. ROFL

    Ya know I swore I’d never, ever, ever get invested in this show again after Season 2. Never cast a single vote in seasons 3, 4, 5, and 6, although there were singers I really liked. This year……….something about Jason just hooked me. And David Cook, like so many others, got me at “Hello”……… they are both amazing, and two such different “vibes”. When the season started I thought Archie had it locked – he has a great voice, especially given his age. Now – not so sure…….anything could happen!

    I’m waiting for spoilers, so many choices, good luck to all four. They are all very talented in their own way. This summer I will for sure go to see this group tour. Lots of talent in this top 10. :)

    When I saw Cookie spoilers that read “Hello”, Billie Jean”, “Always Be My Baby” and “Music of the Night” I thought he had to be out of his mind. I’m at the point where I’m actually anxious whatever we hear he’s singing will make me go WTF? because most likely he’ll kick that songs ass all over the place.

    Love all of your great suggestions for David Cook to sing on AI, Rock and Roll night tomorrow.
    Here’s my Biggie request.
    “Don’t Worry Baby” by the Beach Boys.

    Don’t Worry Baby by The Beach Boys.

    Well its been building up inside of me
    For oh I dont know how long
    I dont know why
    But I keep thinking
    Somethings bound to go wrong

    But she looks in my eyes
    And makes me realize
    And she says dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby
    Everything will turn out alright

    Dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby

    I guess I shouldve kept my mouth shut

    But I cant back down now
    I pushed the other guys too far

    She makes me come alive
    And makes me wanna drive
    When she says dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby
    Everything will turn out alright

    Dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby

    She told me baby, when you race today
    Just take along my love with you
    And if you know how much I loved you
    Baby nothing could go wrong with you

    Oh what she does to me
    When she makes love to me
    And she says dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby
    Everything will turn out alright

    Dont worry baby
    Dont worry baby

    David Archuleta:
    California Dreamin’ by The Mamas & The Papas (About as close as he will get to pulling out another America song after last week)
    A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke

    David Cook:
    Don’t Worry Baby by The Beach Boys (as previously requested)
    Maybe I’m Amazed by Paul McCartney (Possibly motivated by weekend trip to see the Beatles Love show at Mirage in Las Vegas?
    Somebody to Love by Jefferson Airplane (Damn fine classic rock!)

    Thanks Cheese for the Las Vegas update. It was awesome!
    Only 24 hours to go until the show starts.

    Good Luck Final Four.
    I’m double dialing for David Cook tomorrow. WIN, WIN, Win Cookie!!!

  • hollygo9

    DC can sing pretty much anything and I’ll still vote my fingers bloody for him. Actually, he can probably just show up and smile and I’ll call it ‘original’ and vote like a crazy person. That said, I have been kinda of hoping for House of the Rising Sun done in a stripped down accoustic style.

  • http://www.xanga.com/hisaki_chan707 Hisaki

    I read on wiki that the group song is going to be bohemian rhapsodyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

    No, I checked. It says it’ll be We Will Rock You.

    …like WHAT?! I don’t even think I could see Cookie pulling that off. MJ and Queen go together nicely. Cookie and Queen…no.

  • dahirsh

    he could pull it off, but it seems kind of silly with Michael having done it well a few weeks ago. Wiki isn’t always right so I guess we will have to wait and see.

    Bummer, seems no one shares in my excitement at the idea of Jason doing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Shot the Sheriffà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

    How about if it was paired up with something like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Mr. Tambourine Manà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?
    ;-)

    ~~~Over at IDF there is a whole thread wondering if these two suggestions, above, are a spoiler??????????? Anyone have any idea???????? Just cause of the ;-) posted afterward. And another poster said she has a friend who has a friend who knows Jason that says he’s singing this……..LOL………
    Curiousity is getting to me.
    Edited to add – it WAS brought over to IDF from here…………and I replied over there, that it didn’t sound like any kind of a spoiler at all.
    They brought the same spoiler over to the Survivor Sucks Castro thread too! LOL – rumors sure do spread fast!
    colleen — now you’re talking my language! The Beach Boys are rock gods!
    The great falsetto on “Don’t Worry Baby” often belonged to Carl Wilson, Brian Wilson’s little brother and a wonderful, unsung singer who died way too young of cancer. Here’s a 1980s performance of “Don’t Worry Baby” with a brief interview of Carl:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiVAKKeibIo&feature=related
    And here’s Carl doing “God Only Knows,” which I love as much. It is really awesome. Either song, DC could nail with great beauty:
    colette,
    Thanks for those vids. I still miss Carl after 10 years. It was like a light went out when he died. I’ll never forget it as long as I live. I got a chance to see band perform live almost 2 years before his death and it was worth every penny! :)
  • Colleen
    Colette,
    Thank You Rock Sister!! David Cook can sing the whole Beach Boys songlist and I’d be the first one in line to hear it!
    I loved watching the Beach Boys clip you shared.
    Hearing it again thrills me just as much as it did back in the 1960′s when I lived in California.
    If you are listening David, Please sing, “Don’t Worry Baby” by The Beach Boys!
    I don’t want Jason to go mellow again. I’d love to hear do some U2, something anthemic and stirring, like “Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” He has a great voice when he actually SINGS OUT and breaks free from his usual pleasant crooning. We heard it on “Hallelujah”.
    He also needs to rock out, seeing as how it is rock night. Tom Petty’s “American Girl” is a GREAT rock and roll song, and a really good fit for his voice.
  • JudyOhio
    I hope my link worked….never put one in here before :redface_wp:
  • Diana
    My husband thinks someone should go all the way back to the blues era — pick a Robert Johnson song.
    Jason should 100% definitely do a Bob Dylan song…preferable one with an edge.
    Some suggestions (these are earlier Dylan to fit the theme)
    Man of Constant Sorrow, Desolation Row, Visions of Johanna
  • weelassie
    it worked fine. I love Los Lonely Boys. Saw them at one of the Austin City Limits festivals and they were terrific.
    I would love Cookie to tackle a Sam Cooke number. Maybe à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“A Change is Gonna Comeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  and then rock out with something. I like the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Rosalitaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  suggestion.
    I like these ideas too.
    But I want Cookie to rock out with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ring of Fireà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  – the Social D version. I know he doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have the same lower register as Mike Ness, but he could totally Rock. That. Song. I would be in squeee heaven.
    I am planning to go the rehearsal taping tomorrow, so stay tuned.
    Dude, are the rehearsals open to the public? How do you get in there. I mean, I live in AR, so…ya know, couldn’t really go, but i’m just curious. And I find it funny that almost no one is giving song suggestions for Syesha….what does that tell us;) No one gives a sh*#t!!!
    Poster on IDF called Sarah claims she was in chat with sooner, and it was discussed that Jason would be doing something with a tambourine. The Dylan song or the instrument, we do not know.
    In fact, Sarah has since removed her post.
  • sumidol
    Blowin In The Wind by Dylan would be a good choice for Jason -( it has tamborines) – it would touch peoples hearts – about the struggles of war. est – How many times must a cannon ball fly before their forever banned
  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ
    Hey I looked and listened to the KTT cover of “I Want You Back”
    Quite franky, Jason doesn’t have the chops to do this.
    I would suggest the unplugged Clapton version of “Layla”
    I have a long list of “favorite” musical artists and Brian Wilson is easily at the very top. Genius is an overused and devalued word but, if there were a musical Mount Rushmore, Brian would be up there with Bach, Mozart and Wagner. When it comes to production and how he revolutionized studio craft, songwriting, and arranging, he is without a modern equal. He was also a darn fine bassist and one of the purist vocalists in pop music history.
    During production of the Wild Honey album, Carl began to take control from an increasingly reclusive Brian. Wild Honey features Carl’s cover of Stevie Wonder’s “I Was Made to Love Her.” Carl appreciated Stevie at a time when Motown was losing its relevance and right before he began his decade long dominance of R&B. “Darlin’” stands as tall as any of Brian’s earlier hit songs, but I think Carl’s soulfulness really shines on the chorus of “Aren’t You Glad.”
    My personal favorite of Carl’s lead vocals is “God Only Knows,” followed by “Long Promised Road” from the Surf’s Up album.
    MJ, don’t hate me, but Blondie Chaplin actually sang lead on the recording of “Sail on Sailor.” Carl sang lead on most of the live versions.
    I officially know way too much useless information and will just quietly slink back to my Jason Castro shrine. But I would love to talk about Brian some more. This is too cool!
  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina
    ‘k – I want Jason to sing Maggie Mae but, if not, I thought Dylan’s Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door would be a great second.
    Then I found this version, sung by the Red Russian Army Choir & Leningrad Cowboys — what? Peace.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CV6ETVQgob0
    I think DC could really carry this — he could scurry around the floor in hair and makeup, gather up all Little D’s snippings, and superglue them into his current fluff and end up with a forward wedge ! (I particularly like the “hey, hey, hey” in this version along with the behind time band).
    I’ll keep looking for Jason but I’m thinking he could win with Maggie Mae!
  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina
    I’ve changed my mind, I want Jason to not sing A Stairway to Heaven –
    Heard somewhere else Jason picked “I Shot The Sheriff” and “Mr Tambourine Man”…
    Love him but if that’s true frankly, I’m worried.
    Would have loved the two that are supposedly “fake”…Blowing in the Wind and People Get Ready….
    Now, I’m depressed.
  • dulce
    OMG. There is a mini-Cook spoiler running around? Awesome. I’m not waiting for more though. It never happens…ever. The most secretive AI contestant camp in all of Idol history if you ask me. Especially for a frontrunner.
    I cannot stand Castro, but I would love to see him do something with a percussion instrument. Honestly, he needs to show something that he can do that nobody else can (Syesha gets a pass cause she’s the only one without a Y chromosome). Cook is the better guitar player, Archie and Cook are better singers. Castro is the ONLY percussionist. Hey…that reminds me…during the tour, they could REALLY put together an AWESOME band. Cause from I understand, all the guitars are covered as is piano and Castro is truly a drummer.
    Please God tell me that means these are wrong!!! I saw a joke site that’s been wrong every week was saying Tambourine Man so…..
    But that’s not the one I’m most worried about…”I Shot The Sheriff” ?????????????????????????????????????????????????
  • LaFonda
    One of Syesha’s songs will be “Chain of Fools” take that to the bank.
    I like MJ’s suggestion of “Time Is On My Side”. It sounds very similar to The Jackson 5′s “Who’s Loving You”.
    I hope Syesha’s other song is “Mama, he treats your daughter mean” but I dobut it will be. All I know for sure is “Chain of Fools”.
  • jersey
    idolstyleblessed, those are just song suggestions that someone posted here first and then someone brought them to other boards as spoilers. As far as anyone knows here, they were just suggestions by one poster.
  • Grammie Kari
    colette, I actually saw the Beach Boys perform with Chicago in 1989. Three of the originals were on tour and it remains today the best concert I have seen. Carl was the heart of the group. I hope these predictions are right.
    Jason can sing any Bob Dylan song, but today I heard Like a Rolling Stone and feel this would be the best one. I would love to see Syesha sing Needles and Pins. I can actually see David Cook doing White Rabbit, but I will be happy with the Beach Boys for him.
    How about Dion’s - A Teenager in Love for David A.? OK, it’s a joke.
  • Mackie
    archie should sing these 2:
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bridge Over Troubled Waterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  -Eva Cassidy cover (acoustic-guitar like imagine) http://youtube.com/watch?v=sYyQcQSqpbI
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Stand By Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬  -Ben E. king (acoustic version with a more soul vibe) http://youtube.com/watch?v=QxRyPKYlIsc
    or a bit uptempo
    “Superstition” -Stevie Wonder- ‘maybe’ these songs can step up his game..and quit singing ballady songs.
  • hicksaholic
    I am getting really worried about Jason’s picks. I hope he spent some time on youtube or had some help doing it. If he sings I shot the sheriff he deserves to go home.
  • rita205
    Hey, guys,
    Today’s my birthday! Unfortunately, I’m meeting friends for dinner tonight, so I’ll have to catch AI on my DVR when I get home. I started to make some excuse, but it’s kind of hard to explain why I might rather stay home and watch American Idol rather than be taken out to eat on my birthday, y’know? (the real question is how did I find these people who do not watch American Idol?)
    I think I could die happy today just because of the gifts of Youtube (not to mention finding David Cook this past year). One of the USAToday coaches’ suggestion for Syesha is this:
    Syesha should also try the searing and wacky ’50s hit I Put a Spell on You, written by the inimitable Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, who used to come out of a coffin shrieking when he performed it. An unforgettable piece, really (check a couple out on YouTube to just blow your mind). Everyone from Nina Simone to Bryan Ferry and Marilyn Manson has covered the song, straight and otherwise. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a killer tune that sizzles. And, because the song is not one of those all-too-identifiable, dull-as-dishwater, predictable Mariah or Whitney tunes, Syesha could make it new and burn the house down with it.
    And when I went and looked up the tune on youtube, I found this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orNpH6iyokI
    My cats are still wondering what in hell I’m laughing so hard at! Wouldn’t you love to see something like this on the AI stage? What in the world could Simon find to say about IT?
    Rita
  • http://www.youtube.com/user/iamthepurplewalrus purplesmile
    Happy birthday, Rita. :)
    I have had this weird thought all day about David C singing Pretty Woman and I can even (almost) hear it, too. I had had to ask my Cooky-fan friend if that song is even on the list, and she told me it sure was. Heh. ;)
  • rita205
    Hi purplesmile, thanks. Someone else at the USA Today blog suggested that for David. It really could be good, I agree. Lots of room for him this week! You can bet that before I leave the house tonight I’m going to check and double check the settings on the DVR. I actually thought about asking someone else to make a VHS tape of it in case something screws up at my house. Like last Sunday, I was getting ready to go out, and right before I could start doing my hair, the power went out.
    I’m really looking forward to this week. I hope I’m not disappointed. I remember the week in Season 5 when the theme was Love Songs, the song choices for Taylor were so wonderful, and he got saddled with one that was not very good, and at the last minute. And it showed. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen to my favorite this season.
    Rita
  • spanishfan
    There is only one musician for me and that is David Cook. He is in another league. I love the way he arranges obscure nothing little songs and turns them into current modern day hits. I see a lot of Soul Patrol are also voting for David Cook. I would not buy any of the others. David A does not record well and has not found himself yet. I don ´t particularly like frilly singers like Syesha and Jason less said soonest mended.
    They are all talented but for me only one stands out.
  • Grammie Kari
    I would love for any of them to sing Stand By Me. It is my favorite song and can really see David Cook singing it the best. I love my Jason, but after listening to Dylan this is the route to go.
    Syesha would be wise to go with the Shrilles’ Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? It was written by Carole King and is timeless.
    I know it won’t happen, but it would be great if David A. sang a love song from a teen’s perspective.
  • http://americanidollowdown.blogspot.com/ Sherry L
    So, I’ve been away from the computer for a bit, you know sleeping and getting ready for work. I Shot The Sherrif is a real possibility for Jason? I keep seeing that mentioned. I picked that for him on Sunday, because I thought it would be good for him (although not too popular here from what I’ve been reading).
    I thought I had no chance of getting a prediction right this week. I never look at spoilers, so I guess I’ll find out tonight.
    Actually, even though I picked it for him, it’s not one of my favorite songs either. But it’s not that bad! I’ve just heard it way too many times.
  • http://danielsisco.com Phlophonic
    First off, I’m a big Jason supporter…
    I really hope you fellow “Dreadheads” start warming up to at least the possibility that he can do something cool with Sheriff. Not encouraging to see all the negativity towards it. I’m sure auditioners in the past have botched it terribly but I personally am a big fan of both the Marley and Clapton versions. It is not outside the realm of possibility that he can make it work in some way!
    As for Tambourine Man, I haven’t seen as much hating towards that one so that’s good.
    I’m not sure when the “spoilers” become “official” but hopefully sometime today folks will start turning the tide on Jason’s song choices back toward the positive!
  • GwendolynD
