Not being proficent with a musical instrument will not weed out the Adams, Celines, or Barbaras who just sing with their own unique
instrument!
It does, however add an interesting dimension for more average singers who have a universal sweet spot voice.(eg JC sweet singing eye candy).

I agree that playing an instrument alone is not going to be the lynch pin that wins the competition. Matt played wonderful piano last year, and he was nearly eliminated 3 (?) times. But if a contestant shows that they can do both well, simultaneously, I think playing can help illustrate a musical point of view better than those who can’t play any instrument at all.

I am so excited for the Top 24 to be revealed. I am tired of having to avoid spoilers, lol!

There will be a rebroadcast of the Olympics after the news and Late Night Show. They also show a few interviews and such at that late hour.

I am probably the only one here who wants to hear some Singer/Songwriter songs from the 1970s. Using an instrument or not, the contestant has to have a GOOD voice!

I don’t know maybe Jermaine just needs to blend his vocals in with the group sing, alot of people who are good singers don’t sound well collectively as a group if the voices don’t blend well. Season 8′s group songs were sometimes painful. I was disappointed in alot of people I initially liked in the auditions, group performances. It will be hard to pick a fave alot of the people that are good are really similiar at least with the girls.

The people that sing and play instruments are enjoyable. But I really admire the people that are all about the voice. Like Kelly, Reuben, Clay, Carrie, Bo, Kat, Kellie,Deanna, … I like vocalists I guess.

Of all the artists that play an instrument and sing…only about 1 in 10 can do it even reasonably well.

Exactly. And those who are NOT that gifted at playing the guitar better wise up early enough to realize when they need to focus on the vocals and leave the guitar “crutch” behind. My S7 fave (Jason Castro) was more def compelling when leaving the guitar playing to the experts.

Well if they load the top 24 up with Blondes With Guitars like they did the first Hollywood episode, then look for one to make it to the finals as the others cancel eachother out and the votes keep shifting to the remaining girls. Look to the black female R&B girl glut of Seasons 3 & 6, and the pop/rock male glut (and teen glut) of season 7, and the awkward looking people with big voices glut of season 2 (just jokes, people!).

Well, the oversinging moment I was referring to was Carry On Wayward Son, and I don’t see many church singers singing like THAT. But, if he does go on, I see potential for refinement like Adam did.

I’m glad instruments are back for the Top 24 round. I connected more easily with the people who used instruments well than pure singers.

If he did performances like that on the show he would do really well. Hopefully the judges actually give him advice in that area on oversinging and things like that!

In his defense Jermaine is a church singer that is how they sing. Some ppl won’t understand this but you would get that if your familiar with that style of singing.

Well, just like Adam learned early on (apparently from Kara? the horror!) the difference between theater performing and performing as a solo artist in front of a TV camera, Jermaine will have to adjust his church singing style in order to cross over to be a solo artist in front of a TV camera. He’s also going to have to get a personality (from the little I’ve seen so far).

Despite starting as a church singer, I think Danny did this very well up until Rock week, but he was at a disadvantage in the competition because he admittedly was not familiar with many genres of music and had to learn most songs from scratch before he could even think about an artistic interpretation for them. Hopefully Jermaine knows something about other genres of music.

I just really hope Todrick doesn’t get any farther. I don’t care how talented you are, if you’re an antisocial diva ass then you hardly deserve the air you are breathing, and if he does make Top 24 I will make it my mission to take him down.

LOL – ITA! Especially if he starts doing back flips across the stage before/during a performance! Just NO!
