So You Think You Can Dance, Season 6 debuts in a little over 2 weeks, on September 9.

Despite the potential for re-cappers burn out as the result of back-to-back seasons (Season 5 ended on 8/6), I seriously cannot wait to watch the new crop of dancers take the stage at CBS studios in LA.

In anticipation of the new Season, check out these spoilers from SYTYCDism.com, right HERE. The Top 40 were chosen during Vegas week, which wrapped up a few weeks ago. However the Green Mile episode–where the Top 20 are revealed–has not been taped yet.

You will notice there is one notable cut from the list of Vegas week dancers. It’s not a shock.

In other news, in a recent interview, Nigel Lythgoe had some interesting tidbits for Access Hollywood’s Laura Saltman:

  • The new season will incorporate more stars, like Ellen DeGeneres and Katie Holmes, who guest judged and performed (respectively) for Season 5.
  • Nigel would like to hold another dance competition during the results show, highlighting different group dances like stepping, tap, formation, folk dancing, etc.
  • Also, Nigel is thinking about taping a Top 20 special, that would give the audience a chance to get to know each of the contestants. The competition would begin a week later. (Argh. If only Idol would mimic!)

Watch the video, after the JUMP…

Love the dancing, love Kat Deeley, hate the “jidges”, hate the show.

Can’t decide which is worst on the lopsided pimping — SYTYCD or AI. Maybe SYTYCD is worst because the American public would look more to the very biased “experts” to evaluate dancing.

Thank goodness for the fast forward button and MJ’s site so I can read about who went home.

Season 5 was the first time I ever watched SYTYCD, and I was a bit puzzled by the randomness of the selected dance styles for the contestants. It seemed that some got too many ballroom styles, especially since there weren’t that many ballroom specialists, and I noticed that some styles, depending on the choreographer, were more crowd-pleasing than others.

I think it would be better to have one basic style per week, like a theme, rather than a hodgepodge of styles every week. That should level the playing field in any given week. The themes should be rather broad; say, hiphop, latin ballroom, contemporary, broadway, etc.

After looking at the spoilers, I have discovered that MJ’s definition of “shock” is not the same as mine. I’ve also discovered that my excitement about the new season just took a nose dive.

    double post

  • unique28v

There are waaay too many contemporary dancers again this year.

  • lriverotter

That shock wasn’t so shocking to me either – I kinda figured they were gonna make that cut. The judges don’t really seem to like it when the voting audience goes against their expert opinion. Love this show for the dancing and choreography. And sometimes the judging/criticism is actually constructive. But I’ll continue to watch and enjoy without getting involved in the voting. Thanks for covering this, MJ. I don’t do TV so all my “coverage” is through watching the videos you provide.

  • luvadamlambert

What was the shock? Sorry I’m 2 lazy to check

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/voronas-ontario-american-idol-tour-recap.htm/feed/ vorona

    I think it’s that somebody’s (Broadway-dancing) sibling didn’t make the cut, luvadamlambert.

It’s funny, I’m looking at that list of names, reading about the show, and I’m utterly bored. Blah. Strangers. Means nothing. Who cares.

AND YET, in just a month or two, I know I’ll care so effing deeply. Ridiculous levels of rah rah rah gung ho. I’ll stalk MJs to find spoilers. I’ll talk about dancing in minute detail with my mother. I’ll check my email twelve times a day to see if I made it to the top of the waiting list for taping tickets. It’s coming for me. I can feel it.

Same with American Idol 9. I almost resent all these new upstarts that are going to sing at me and try to make me, the icy one, care. But I know that by February, I’ll totally be their bench, panting for new stuff.

I’m such a sucker. And I don’t care. It’s one of my very few vices. :)

  • butter

I hope I feel the same. Right now I don’t care. A top 20 special that lets me get to know the newbies might help!

  • rayni

vorona :clap_tb: :thumbup_tb: :lol_tb: Me too… and too many contemporaries I think. I loved somebody’s suggestion that they all dance the same style dance each week. Then you could make a clearer comparison. But they don’t care what I think, do they?!

  • bmms

I never watched SYTYCD until this season (5). I loved it! Of course, AI is a whole different animal, and therefore I was feeling kind of blah once SYTYCD premiered right after AI’s finale. I really love the entire dance routines, but I feel that there is way too much contemporary. Need more spark, Nigel. Ah, plenty of variety would be nice! And just as on AI, I do have a favorite judge… Mary Murphy. I love her Wooooohoooo! and I loved the way she stood up for Brandon when one of the choreagraphers (what’s her name?) put him down and didn’t think too highly of him. :nono_tb:

Does anybody know if they will continue using this new format? By premiering each new season back to back, that is. I don’t dislike it or like it, but I do feel a need for some ‘spacing’ between seasons, just as any show. :wink_ee:

  • butter

No, the show will only be on in the Fall from now on, assuming the ratings are ok, I guess.

  • Dr. Tracey

    a Top 20 special

I like Nigel’s ideas on this.

No surprise about the cut, glad for that, one was enough.
I am really looking forward to the new season……….bring it on!

  • luvadamlambert

Thanks vorona. Noooo I loved evan and his brother. sad. Hahahahaha I love the word tidbits. yes I’m weird.

  • stelladallas

Blah is right. I will be watching Donny Osmond on DWTS instead. (At least that’s what I’m saying as of now, heh.)

Part of my blahness is that I don’t think I can take Nigel two seasons so close together. I put up with his obnoxious crap all summer, I don’t think I can take it again in the fall, too.

  • Gracie77

I guessed what the not-so-shocking cut was even before I read the link. Wasn’t terribly surprised, but it does seem kind of mean given that it seemed like Nigel all but promised him a spot in seaon 6 on the season 5 finale.

Hard to get excited about a bunch of random names, but I’m sure that will change once the season starts. Always so much talent on the show.

  • lucy

Maybe they’ll let him choreograph. That would be nice. Tyce’s Broadway routines tend to be crummy.

  • http://www.irish-wolfhounds.com Buderschnookie

The shock was probably for the best. They would have just picked him to bloody pieces every week just like before, humiliating him for this, now that, then the other. Those two are too good for this show.

  • MrsB

I love the art of dance, my only true love until my 20′s. I have been delighted beyond words to see it on television in the comfort of my own home since the show aired!

I will endure whatever the producers do with SYTYCD even if I object. I often leave the room & return when dancing begins again! I really don’t care about any changes they make just as long as the show continues. During the show Mary Murphy makes me laugh, Cat Deely is awesome & Nygel is Nygel, but the dancing is what excites me & makes me tune in!

I enjoyed seeing Mary in the interview vid, a first for me, as I’ve seen several from Cat & Nygel.

I always vote for the dancer I feel adapts to the different styles the best and don’t always pick a winner and I am never dissapointed as I am with DWTS or AI because I feel a different connection to this show, especially since it gives young dancers the opportunity to shine & advance in the very difficult career of a professional dancer! I just love this show, my favorite by a long shot!

Thanks for posting MJ – can’t wait for the new season!!!!

I’m excited for Nathan Trasoras (the now 18yr old that got the pass straight to Vegas this spring because he wasn’t old enough yet).

Not shocked by siblings not making it (Caitlyn’s sister Megan didn’t either, besides Ryan K).

If Jacki Ford gets in then we’re guaranteed not to get stuck with another Joey Dowling routine until she gets cut.

I was hoping to see Natalie try out again. I still think she was better than some of the girls that got through this past season.

As far as the mix of dance styles….. apparently the US has run out of BBoys and Ballroom dancers. Or they’ve all moved to Canada. SYTYCD Canada auditions had TONS of both. They just announced their Top 20 last night. I haven’t had a chance to watch the episode yet but based on the audition shows it looks to be a good season “up north”.

  • KrazeeK120

I do wish they’d let Ryan choreograph. Most of the time, Tyce’s Broadway “choreography” leaves a lot to be desired. They are in desperate need of a replacement for Tyce in the Broadway department. (Conversely, I LOVE Tyce’s contemporary pieces. I have no idea why there’s such a huge discrepancy between his choreography for the two styles).

I also know that Ryan choreographs many of Evan’s solos, so if you enjoyed Evan’s solos, chances are you’d enjoy Ryan’s choreography.

  • t2

So someone’s broadway brother didn’t make it? Guess the judges weren’t prepared for the amount of people who really enjoyed broadway dancing last year and don’t want to have to go through that again….jeesh.

So which contemporary dancer will win … again … this year…

  • butte009

If anyone is interested….. Here’s the Top 20 for SYTYCD Canada.
    http://www.ctv.ca/mini/dance2009/competitors.html

It’s a nice rounded field. An excellent tapper, several hip-hop (male and female), a female krumper, a french-speaking Bboy, 2 strong Ballroom guys, 1 latin ballroom female, oh… and a former Olympian skater (quite the Diva). Performance shows start tonight!
