So You Think You Can Dance Auditions in Phoenix! Mia Michaels is the guest judge.

Update: Now with videos! Check it out after the JUMP…

Here are the highlights from the So You Think You Can Dance auditions in Phoenix.

Sasha Mallory – 21 – Bakersfield, CA – Sasha appears to have some sort of backstory. Her family is there at her audition with her, and just the sight of them makes her burst into tears. There’s got to be a story there. Her quirky style earns her a ticket straight to Vegas.

Allison Becker – 21 – Keller, TX – Allison became hearing impaired after contracting spinal meningitis at 16 months. She probably has some hearing, because she’s obviously keeping the beat as she dances and her speech is pretty good. Allison moves Mary to tears–she reminds Mary of her cousin who was also deaf and “didn’t make it.” Mary doesn’t go into the details, but I assume suicide. Allison advances to Vegas after choreography. She’s not a strong dancer, but she is good TV.

Jacob Jason and William DeVries – 29 – West Hollywood, CA – Here’s where Nigel makes amends for the cracks he made about a same sex dancing duo last season.

His snarky “brokeback dancing” comment on twitter about the pair–who were mediocre to begin with–angered a lot of dance fans. So this new season features a talented same sex couple. And you can tell that Nigel and Mary still don’t like the concept much, but they go to great lengths to compliment their dance skills and their “courage”.

Mia is flat-out crying. I dunno, isn’t turning the pair into a symbol for gay rights a little condescending? Why not just acknowledge the form as a new configuration of a traditional dance style and leave it at that? Both make it to Vegas after choreography, and with that, Nigel has probably mended that broken fence.

Jonathan “Legacy” Perez – 27 – Studio City, CA – And tonight’s star is the irresistible B-boy, “Legacy” He’s not only a hard-hitting street dancer, but he’s really good looking too. And everybody seems to know him, which gives him an air of plantiness. If he can dance other styles, he could go far. No clue whether he can do anything other than b-boy stuff–the judges allowed him to bypass choreography and go straight to Vegas. Maybe they know something that we don’t.

Next week’s audition city– Boston, MA.

a bit disappointed with the summer season, so hopefully they saved their better dancers for the fall season.

  • Sunshinegirl

I am loving this! The only thing is with the exception of 1 Latin girl and 2 tap guys, and 1 tap girl, the rest of the good ones have been ALL contemporary girls. Not much diversity so far.

  • koshka

Why is everyone so teary eyed on the show tonight? And why was Mia crying after the gay couple completed their dance? I feel like I missed that memo.

  • silverwings

I had to step away – did either of the same-sex ballroom guys make it to Vegas? They both seemed pretty good…

  • Sunshinegirl

Not to sound cliche, but I really loved Allison, not for her impairment, but I would have regardless. She just lights up the stage and her dancing is so expressive!

  • koshka

I think they are going to see how they dance with girls first. :) The judges were very gracious with them. Classy.

I love Nigel being like “yeah i really screwed this up last time…” Granted, the pair this year was MUCH stronger than the two last year, imo.

I saw them dancing with the girls to Pasha and Anya’s routine and got up after the deaf girl got through. I figured they stated if either of the guys made it after that and I missed it.

OMG, Jonathan is just awesome, absolutely awesome! He is also gorgeous.

I like Allison and see room for improvement. Seems so doggone sweet and sincere.

I thought the gay guys would make it through. The taller one does have sex appeal, so we shall see.

The pace of the show was even and flowed nicely (minus the UFO stuff). I liked how they presented the bad auditions without going overboard. Simon should be watching. Very enjoyable tonight!

The gay guys are through and they were absolutely terrific. Kudos to Nigel for admitting his error regarding same sex ballroom dancing.

Koshka, Why was Mia crying after the gay couples routine? Well, as you probably know, same sex relationships are still not honored by many in this country, and to come out on public TV and show the kind of intimacy and vulnerability they did, was ridiculously brave of them, given today’s culture. They shattered some barriers right there. It’s one thing to be an out and proud gay person. It’s quite another to be a gay couple showing that kind of intimacy on the public air waves. I say, “Bravo!”

I MISSEDD IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had to cath up on the epic concert D:

  • Dr. Tracey

Nobody stood out for me tonight.

I really could have done without the screaming kid. We’ve had to endure Mary’s screaming for so long that adding another person’s is beyond my level of tolerance.

The same-sex ballroom dancers were much better than the ones last season. They also didn’t dance as effeminately – if that’s a word. They were still strong in their movements. Big difference IMHO. I thought it was a little strange that Nigel and crew would bother to put them through choreo since it was going to be Pasha and Anya ballroom. Did they really think that these guys wouldn’t have the same dance ability when the partner was a woman? But I guess their audition didn’t exactly qualify as a straight to Vegas routine either….

I wasn’t blown away by the BBoy. They kept cutting away when he’d start to fall out of his tricks, IMO. Mia said she’d heard of him? Really?

And ITA with Dr. Tracey – nobody stood out.

  • rockvixen

Well the Bboy is a definite shoe-in. I’m sure that Nigel has that planned out.

rockvixen, they might well be saving some b-boys for later. Vegas is usually a succession of early favorites getting cut. Also, with the new top 20 special show where everyone gets introduced, they might be more willing than ever to put people through you’ve never even seen.

That said, I adored Allison Becker. A very beautiful dancer and an inspiration beside that. I know that chances are they’ll cut her during Vegas, but I’d love to see her make the top 20. I was crying my eyes out, Mia not crying there and actually commenting that she was holding it back struck me as weird. That woman will cry at the drop of a hat. Lil C told Evan last year, “There is a divinity to your movements,” I think that is even more appropriate for Allison. Every movement she made made so much sense, it couldn’t just be her feeling of the percussive elements. She is hearing something beautiful in her head when she’s dancing.

  • Grammie Kari

Allison advances to Vegas after choreography. She’s not a strong dancer, but she is good TV.

This is true. Plus, she will be an inspiration for thousands of youngsters who may have thought they couldn’t dance.

Jonathan Perez – wasn’t he Doriana Sanchez’s assistant during one of her Disco routines? Not sure – but he looks familier.

Oh.. I totally get this. I’m a screamer for same sex marriage in a conservative state. I just didn’t know if this somehow touched her life personally. I know nothing about Mia, other than what is seen on the show – for all I know she could be gay.

MJ, I don’t think Jacob and William’s dance was made out to be a symbol of gay rights as it was simply breaking through longheld barriers. The amount of dancers stuffed into the closet has to break through at some point. Just consider how many dancers are gay and not able to fully express that side of themselves through their dance? Put in context, this dance was not just “a new configuration of a traditional dance style”. There is simply much more meaning to it than that, for the dance community as well as for the gay community, both of which I’m sure Mia Michaels is intimately involved with.

It sounded like they said that Legacy assisted “Lauren” with choreography last year? He was good, but I just can’t deal with anyone who calls himself “Legacy” Ick.

I enjoyed the male ballroom dancers but could have done without Mia’s tears. If they had been a boy-girl couple, they would have been sent straight to Vegas – they seemed to be really strong in their style. Does Nigel really think that gay guys can’t dance with girls? Has he never seen this show?

I look forward to the day when what Jacob and William did up on that stage isn’t a big damn deal. It shouldn’t be.

My next door neighbor and best friend growing up was Allison–right down to the childhood spinal meningitis–only plug in actress for dancer. Later, she got involved with Deaf activism. Anybody involved in that community, particularly in Europe and Australia probably knows who she is.

Willem and Jacob run Balliamos dance studio. They’re also featured in a series of videos, introduced by Dancing With The Stars judge Bruno Tonioli, teaching various celebs how to dance.

I am down with Legacy. Hoping he makes top 20. I think he probably could handle other styles as he seemed pretty graceful. We shall see.

This is our Jonathan, he is so funny but seriously he can dance so much better than what he did last night?!!! He teaches dance, he is great with the kids and just a really nice guy, at least he got in front of the judges and on TV, that is no small feat!
