Janette and Brandon and Melissa and Ade are the stars of this season so far, although splitting up the couples next week could shake things up.   Ade, for instance, may not shine quite as brightly dancing with a partner other than the sublime Melissa.

Once again, I’m putting my points on Caitlin and Jason to leave.   They would have left last week had they hit the bottom 3.   This week, without any cool alien gimmicks, I think they’ll make the bottom, easily.

A little off-topic, but am I the only one who finds it depressing that Simon Cowell’s wretched “America’s Got Talent” is kicking SYTYCD’s ass in the ratings?   Oh, the humanity…

Each couple has two dances this week… OMG check out Cat’s bob!   Tyce DiOrio sits on the judging panel for the very first time.

Next week, the couples split, to dance with different partners. The couples talks in the second video packages about breaking up.

The tour begins September in New Hampshire! I think I’m going to go this year…

Live blog and videos after the JUMP…

Melissa and Ade – Disco by Doriana Sanchez – “Move On Up” by Destination (iTunes) – Melissa is a little nervous to do disco for the first time. Another winner from Melissa and Ade.   The lifts are sensational. The routine really shows off their strength. Oops, Melissa fell at the end, but still great. Nigel says, “Incredible, so much energy…exciting…tremedous.”   Mary loves it, she calls it fun and the lifts tremendous. “Amen” screams Mary.   Tyce says, “That was friggin great.” He calls Melissa’s body “brilliant”. 1-888-836-7601. – VIDEO

Kayla and Kupono – Contemporary by Mia Michaels – “Gravity” by Sarah Bareilles (iTunes) – “This piece is about addiction,” says Mia. Kupono is the “addiction”, and t   That was a beutiful piece of choreography. Nigel asks Kayla to get her hair out of her face, but calls her dancing powerful, and compliments Kupono for his malevalonce.   Mary gives Kapona props for staying inc character and calls Kayla flawless still in the train, she says. Tyce says the best dancers are the best actors. He says he feels like he had an experience.   He calls Kayla a “beast”, but thinks Kupono could be stronger in his body. 1-888-836-7602. – VIDEO

Caitlin and Jason -Foxtrot by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin – “Minnie the Moocher” by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (iTunes)- Jason gets to play “the macho man”. This is pretty good, but I don’t think it’s good enough to get them off the cusp they’ve been living on the past few weeks. Unlike last week, this rountine isn’t showy enough to get people to pick up their phones. Nigel compares Caitlin to Grace Kelly and compliments Jason on his footwork. He sees a huge improvement. Mary thought it was “tremendous”, elegant and smooth. Tyce thought they both looked like stars, but suggests they could have “glided” more. 1-888-836-7603 - VIDEO

Jeanine and Phillip – Russian Folk Dance by Youri Nelzine & Lilia Babenko – “Kalinka” by Barynya – The story is a playful competition between a man and a woman. – “Kalinka” – OMG, Phillip is totally cracking me up.   The faces! The costumes! Ha ha. Jeanine is REALLY good. She’s a little dark horse in this thing.   Nigel compares them to “little kids.” He thought the routine felt a little “folky”, but says it’s not about the dancers.   Mary liked Jeanine at the beginning of the routine, and Phillip’s leg kicks. Tyce insists on honoring the dancers…he thought they did great considering the routine they were asked to learn. 1-888-836-7604VIDEO

Randi and Evan – Hip Hop by Tabitha and Napoleon – “Halo” by Beyonce (iTunes)- The dancers play a couple who have found out they’re pregnant. Lots of great chemistry between these two.   Both are doing a good job, despite stepping out of their comfort zone. Nigel says Randi and Evan are one of his favorite couples and calls them an asset to the program. Mary was surprised–she didn’t think they could do hip hop. Tyce compliments Nappy/Tabs for good storytelling.   He thinks Evan is good, needs to find more. He loves Randi. The judges seem to be damning these two with faint praise… 1-888-836-7605 - VIDEO

Janette and Brandon – Argentine Tango by Leonardo Barrionuevo and Miriam Larici – “Libertango” from Forever Tango (original Broadway cast) –   These two are incredible. Is there a dance style that Brandon can’t do? Janette is in her wheelhouse here, and she’s beyond fabulous. After, there’s a long beat of silence, before the entire judges’ panel stands to give them an ovation. Janette and Brandon thank the choreographers.   Nigel calls it as close to perfection as he’s seen on the stage ever. Mary is screaming–literally catching her breath. Mary puts them on the train, of course. She’s shimmying with Tyce, who calls Janette and Brandon a “power couple.” “Unreal,” he says. 1-888-836-7606. – VIDEO

Melissa and Ade – “Waltz” by Ron Montez – “Natural Woman” by Mary J. Blige – The choreography thinks the dancers make a good combination. The strength and grace these two have exhibited in all their routines is again on display here. Very beautiful. Nigel says, beautiful lines, stength. He wanted to see more rise and fall from Ade.   Mary thought Ade could have been smoother, but calls Melissa “mesmerizing” best line of the night “Pipe down English Muffin!” to Nigel. Tyce complimented them, but thinks the dance needs to be as powerful as the music. – VIDEO

Kayla and Kupono – Broadway by Joey Dowling – “The Dance at the Gym” from West Side Story (The New Broadway Cast) – The routine is about love at first sight.   Well, this routine totally left me flat. The urban grit the dance needed to seem believable was missing. Nigel agrees with me! He thought the dance lacked the true emotion of the characters, lacking toughness. Joey is nodding her head as he speaks. Mary thought they did a good job despite maybe not latching on to the style. Tyce, the Broadway choreographer, agrees with Nigel–he thinks they needed to dig into the characters more, although they danced it well. – VIDEO

Caitlin and Jason – Lyrical Jazz by Mandy Moore – “Show Me Heaven” by Maria McKee (iTunes) – Caitlin and Jason are excited to finally have their own style.   Yep, this might be one of their best routines of the entire season. Nigel thought the work was very good, although he thinks they lack chemistry. Mary sees chemistry, but didn’t think it was “magic” or “memorable.”   Woah, these remarks are sounding like a big kiss off! Tyce compliments them on their lines and timing, but he thinks they’re playing it safe.   If these two end up in the bottom 3 this week, they are gone. – VIDEO

Jeanine and Phillip – Jive by Tony Meredith and Melanie LaPatin – “Stuff Like That There” by Bette Midler (iTunes) – The routine is about a sailor who comes back home to a teasing partner.   The performance is loads of fun. Phillip is his typically charming and fun self, while still lacking in dance technique.   Jeanine has charm AND technique.   She’s fab. Nigel says it was the best Phillip has been outside his own style. He calls Jeanine one of the best Top 10 dancers. Mary guarantees Jeanine will be here next week and puts her on the Hot Tamale Train. She calls Phillip “a big surprise.” “Don’t count this kid out,” says Mary about Phillip. Tyce says what Phillip lacks in technique, he makes up for in performance.   I’m not convinced Phillip has improved that much, but I think the judges really want this couple to advance–they were in the bottom 3 last week. – VIDEO

Randi and Evan – “Samba” by Pasha and Anya – “Ritmo De Bom Bom” by Jubaba – I enjoyed that, more than the judges did for sure.   These two have lots of chemistry. Nigel has trouble looking at Evan as the “Hot Samba King”.   Mary says maybe it wasn’t hot, but it was a slow simmer…not dynamic. She thought Evan needed to go the extra mile.   Tyce agrees, and thinks Evan needed to do a little more detective work to find what would make the dance work.   He thought Randi carried the routine. So did Mary–she puts Randi on the hot tamale train. – VIDEO

Janette and Brandon   – Pop Jazz by Wade Robson – “Ruby Blue” by Roisin Murphy (iTunes) – The routine is about two thieves.   Brandon loves working with Wade. Another awesome routine from these two–style, personality and technical perfection right here.   These two are totally going to the finals. Nigel says they’ve proven that there isn’t anything they can throw at them they can’t do. He thinks they deserve the biggest vote of the night. “Spontaneous combustion” says Mary. She calls Brandon “My champion.”   Tyce says they write their own ticket.   He’s “proud and privileged” to be watching “technical excellence.” – VIDEO

  • unique28v

Ade was better than Melissa, but I didn’t think this Disco was that great.

And they just let it go that Melissa fell out of her pose.

  • Jx223

I love Melissa and Ade, I think that they are the best couple this show has had since Benji and Donyelle back in season 2.

  • butte009

unique28v, I agree. Nothing compared to Jeanette and Brandon’s.

I liked Kupono and Kayla. Kupono was freaky in character for me.

  • rayni

My gosh, Kupono and Kayla just reduced me to tears! Over a dance for heavens sake! That was so incredible. Count me on the Kayla train. I can not believe it.

  • Jocelin

Disco: The transition steps between moves were quite awkward and stilted. I liked it but didn’t think it was as stellar as the judges thought.

Kupono and Kayla were stunning. That piece was powerful.

  • rayni

Caitlin and Jason – meh. I’m not getting the judges love at all – they were stilted somehow. And her dress was horrendous so points off for that – lol.

  • Sunshinegirl

I hope Jeannine wins this season. She’s been an awesome come-from-nowhere surprise. Can’t wait to see her tonight!

  • butte009

    And her dress was horrendous.

Not much of an improvement over last week’s aluminum foiled outfit. :thumbdown_tb:

  • lilbrusc102

I thought Melissa and Ade were fun….not mindblowing, but enjoyable. Ade in particular seemed to really embody the groove and fun I associate w/ disco.

Kupono and Kayla were haunting. It was almost eerie how in character Kupono stayed, and I thought Kayla seemed more emotionally in the dance than she usually is.

Jason and Caitlin were just ok for me, but it’s more because the foxtrot is not a particularly exciting than the way they danced.

  • BlankSlate

Did Cat really cut her hair or is that just a hairdo for the night?

  • Jocelin

Caitlin and Jason were fine but they seriously lack mojo as a couple. No chemistry.

Russian folk dance. Sorry. This is like watching international night at a high school performed by a local folk dance troupe. Not great.

  • rayni

Oh dear God – what have they done to Phillip and Jeanine. Horrid, horrid, horrid dance. I love Jeanine and that stoopid dance will land them in the bottom.

  • rayni

Randi and Evan – cutest couple evah! She was sharper than him tonight – but still so so cute. I do love to watch them and don’t think they would be any better with another partner. They may make each other better really.

  • unique28v

I liked Kupono and Kayla. Kupono was freaky in character for me.

Yes. This is the first time I really liked them. That was beautiful. They definitely shouldn’t be in the bottom after that performance.

  • Jocelin

Hip Hop. I can’t believe they watered it down so much that it makes Danny’s and Anya’s hip hop routine from season 3 seem “street”. I liked Randi in this routine a lot, but Evan wasn’t as sharp and rhythmic.

  • butte009

WTH? Was the Russian routine watered down for Philip? Wow. That did seem really elementary at moments.

I liked the Hip Hop, but all of NapTab’s routines are starting to look alike to me… The smooth Hip Hop seemed to work ok for Evan but there were a few spots where I thought he could have hit things a little harder. Still a good job and better than the Foxtrot.

ETA: That Tango was freaking awesome!! WhoooooHooooo!!

They let Tyce say Damn?!! WhoooooHooooo!!

  • Jocelin

Tango was fab. Janette was perfect.

  • terps

    I loveed that.

  • lilbrusc102

I dunno about best ballroom routine ever on the show, but it was definitely the best tango. Janette was incredible!!! Brandon was amazing as well, but Janette really shone in that routine. Awesome.

  • BlankSlate

I am obsessing about Cat’s hair
    Help
Was it cut or styled tonight?

  • floridaboy8703

Count me in the minority but I do not think Tabitha and Napoleon have been all that good for HipHop dance. What they serve us day in and day out it seems is contemporary dance with a HipHop “fee”. HipHop has and always been a street dance and while it is okay to influence it with other styles to take the street out of it ALL Together then what are you serving us? People always say OMG NapTab are my favorite HipHop choreographers only what they choreography is really hard to distinguish between Contemporary and HipHop… Like a Pop Jazz routine from Brian has more HipHop in it than most NapTab dances.

This Halo dance tonight is yet another example.

  • Jocelin

Janette was incredible!!! Brandon was amazing as well, but Janette really shone in that routine. Awesome.

I agree. Janette was the star. Wonderful. Brandon was very good, but I wished he had a little more stretch through his calves and feet for me to call it the best ballroom routine ever.

  • butte009

Was it cut or styled tonight?

I don’t recall anything being said… but I think it’s a cut – or they took all the extensions out.

  • rayni

BlankSlate, I can’t tell about Cat’s hair either.

The Melissa/Ade waltz comments are lower key than I expected for them. hmmm…..

  • Sunshinegirl

Jeanine is REALLY good. She’s a little dark horse in this thing.

I completely agree MJ! I’ve compared her to Kris Allen before in that regard. And I hope she keeps it up! She’s really one of the best they have no matter how much they drool over Melissa, Kayla, and Jeanette. Those girls are excellent too, but there’s something about Jeannine that keeps my interest more. I tend to remember her more than the others.

  • gangreen29

Kupono is such a scumbag. What a nasty thing to say about Kayla. He just seems so classless. It really is striking following Melissa and Ade who are so classy.

  • floridaboy8703

    @ Sunshinegirl

I’m pretty sure the only one they “drool” over is Kayla.
Who has been inconsistent at best.

Melissa and Janette have deserved every bit of praise they have been giving. That’s what happens when you turn in great performances consistently.
Jeanine is good but she lacks consistency or just got a crap partner.
    She will shine though .

  • Jocelin

I am ready for Ade to dance with someone else and in a more dynamic dance style to bring out his fullest potential.

  • Sunshinegirl

I liked the Hip Hop, but all of NapTab’s routines are starting to look alike to me.

I see what you mean…they do have a certain type of choreography they always use. But I don’t mind it. I always find their routines so cool and interesting to watch! The chain one last week with Jeannine and Phillip rocked out loud! Though I thought it was odd that they’ve been given Hip Hop twice now.

  • butte009

I think the waltz was ok. I’ve already forgotten, which isn’t a good sign.

Broadway – I’m not really caring for this Joey choreographer. Should there have been more energy? I’ve already forgotten this routine too. Except I noticed that Kupono seemed to be wearing little checked/squared pants. I vaguely remember wondering how Evan would have done during it….

  • idolbeat

Dang Fox! My station is not working. It just went to green lines after Randi and Evan. Since I had just got in, that is the only dance I have seen.

Waiting for the videos! Evan and Randi are so cute together but I have to agree that he was just so-so. Randi lights up the stage with her smile!

  • idolbeat

Kat wore her hair in a bob last year on one show too – it was just pinned up!

  • galaxygrrl

I hate being on the west coast and having to wait to watch this when I can read all about it here. Though San Francisco is a nice place to live.

  • sidewalk

So far, my favorite is Kayla and Kupono’s first dance.
And I love Randi and Evan…they just might be my favorite couple.
Caitlin and Jason have had a mediocre night…I think their time might be up.
I didn’t see all of Brandon and Janette, but what I saw was incredible.

  • gangreen29

I think Caitlin was great in both of her dances tonight, but I think Jason really drags down the pair. He is a good technical dancer, but he just comes across as so young that it takes me out of the dance. He looked like an 8th grader at a homecoming dance in the foxtrot, and I didn’t fee any sensuality from him in the jazz.

  • rayni

I love Jeanine. I really love her. The girls are great this year. I’m gonna have some hot tamale candy in their honor! Keep all the girls – send Jason and Phillip home.

  • nuttin2lose

wow the praise phillip got. they most really want him in the top 10. i feel like he is the weakest though. shldn’t get to top 10 over jason.

  • butte009

Caitlin/Jason were pretty good. But I couldn’t help wondering how well one of the other couples could have done.

Jive was entertaining – not technically good from Phil. But much livelier than Evan/Randi, IMO. Nigel had a positive comment about Phil doing his best out of his genre so I think he’ll be saved if they are in the B3. Jeanine being safe is a given.

ETA: I thought the Samba was “cute”. Ahhh Pasha… I so miss having a strong ballroom guy for the past 2 years. :(

  • Jocelin

Whoa. Off tempo samba. Or sluggish.

  • gangreen29

Blah, that wasn’t a very good samba. Also, they’re short

  • Jx223

I love Pasha and Anya,(especially Pasha) and I am glad that they got to choreograph a routine on this show.

  • lilbrusc102

The samba was ok but was definitely missing the hotness. It’s always good to see Pasha though!!! Where are the hot ballroom guys this year (and last)? I think that’s what I’m missing…

  • butte009

Brandon and Janette were by far the best couple tonight! Wade is so freaking good!

  • Jx223

I thought that Brandon and Janette’s jazz routine that Wade choreographed was really cool. I enjoyed that performance, it was awesome.

  • rayni

Loved Brandon for the first time – it’s better for me when I can see the guy not just being a mule for the girl. He was awesome.

  • floridaboy8703

Season 5 Couples Winner = Brandon and Janette

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

I freaking loved that Wade piece. Loveloveloveloveloved. I’ve been running all over the place tonight getting ready for tomorrow, so the only routines I’ve even seen are the Argentine Tango, Samba, and Wade’s Jazz. But I liked all of those. So seems like it was a pretty good night.

ETA: I’m starting to be thankful that I picked Janette as my overall pick in the pool. Heh.

  • Nerinab

Evan definitely had an “off night” tonight. Though I don’t think his part in the samba comes close to the awfulness of Philip’s tango from a few weeks ago. And the Russian Folk Dance was absurd.

Giving credit where its due, Kayla and Kupono’s contemporary piece was incredible. I still won’t vote for them, but they hit it hard.

Jeanette and Brandon are the couple that has had consistently strong performances and tonight was no exception. They were really, really good. Probably Top 4.

Melissa and Ade were good, too. I’m just not affected by them as much as B&J.

My votes will go to Evan and Randi, not because of their dances tonight, but because of the incredibly shabby way Evan is being treated.

I think the only thing livelier about Jeanine and Philip’s jive was the booty shaking and accent on Jeanine’s bosom. Technically, Philip was horrible.

  • lilbrusc102

I LOVE Wade! That routine was just amazing!!! Kupono and Kayla’s contemporary was my favorite piece of the night, but I think Brandon and Janette were definitely the strongest couple. They are a power couple indeed.

I love Kupono and Ade and think Brandon is brilliant, but I think this is a girl’s year….the girls are really strong this year.

  • unique28v

Janette and Brandon are my favorite couple by far. Brandon is my favorite guy and Janette is my favorite girl. I hope they both make it to the finals. That Tango was spectacular!!

  • KrazeeK120

Favorite dance of the night: Janette/Brandon jazz. I can’t wait until they get split up though, I love Janette but I really don’t like Brandon. I might throw some votes to her individually but I just can’t bring myself to vote for them as a couple.

Favorite couple: Evan and Randi. I think they have the best chemistry of all the couples and are a joy to watch, even when they aren’t at their best. Even their “worst” dances are pretty good though.

    Circle arms FTW!!

  • Grammie Kari

I see no weakness in the six girls, and see this as the strongest line up of ladies to ever appear on the show. However, I find weaknesses in at least four of the guys (Phillip, Jason, Kupono, and Evan.)

Phillip is the least talented dancer. Jason isn’t consistent, but he is cute. I don’t like Kupono, no matter how I try. Evan needs to learn how to be sexy and shake his bootie; I do like his personality, especially with Randi.

Quite a lopsided bit of talent this season. I think Phillip will go home; however, he will be invited as an alternate to be on the tour. For the girls, I have no idea!

  • Jocelin

I missed a couple of the second half routines, but I do think Brandon and Janette had the overall strongest night. My favorite routine was the addiction Kupono/Kayla dance which was “dance art”. The Russian routine- dead last.

Okay, now I’m rewinding dvr to see what I missed.

    Rankings:

    1. Kupono/Kayla contemporary
    2. Brandon/Janette Jazz
    3. Brandon/Janette Tango

    Gap

    4. Melissa/Ade waltz
    5. Melissa Ade disco

    Gap

    6. Caitlin/Jason contemporary
    7. Phillip/Jeanine Jive
    8. Kupono/Kayla Broadway
    9. Caitlin/Jason foxtrot

    Gap

    10. Randi/Evan hip hop
    11. Randi/Evan samba

    Gap

    12. Phillip/Jeanine folk dance

  • floridaboy8703

    @ KrazeeK120

Good thing Brandon is supremely talented and the general public can see that. So far he has done very well without “Your Votes”

  • butte009

Couple order for me (tonight only)

    Brandon/Janette – in a class by themselves tonight – 2 exceptional routines
    Kupona/Kayla – 1 exceptional Mia routine, 1 meh.
    Ade/Melissa – 2 good-ish routines for me… I think. I don’t recall the waltz.
    Jason/Caitlin – 1 good-ish routine, 1 meh
    Evan/Randi – 1 good-ish, 1 meh
    Philip/Jeanine -1 entertaining, 1 WTF?

It’s obvious Philip should go home. He would be one of the alternates for the tour at this point (like Hok was) so maybe Nigel will let him go. I love Philip doing his own thing but really it’s not fair to the female dancer who partners with him.

When comparing these 6 girls I’d say Caitlin should head home. I’ve never been wowed by her.

  • KrazeeK120

Good thing Brandon is supremely talented and the general public can see that. So far he has done very well without ‘Your Votes’

I agree that he is very talented. But he seems kind of personality-less to me. And I saw no chemistry in the argentine tango AT ALL.

I feel the same way about him that I did about Danny a couple of seasons ago. Brilliant dancer with no personality. Not going to win. I think Janette will win, and deservedly so.

And that is just my opinion!

ETA: I am nearly 100% confident that Phillip won’t go home tomorrow. He’s the ONLY hip-hopper in the bunch, and they’re not going to want 4 contemporary guys on the tour. One of Kupono or Jason will go home, I think. And of the girls…I can’t see how Caitlin will stay.

  • baxter

    @ KrazeeK120

Good thing Brandon is supremely talented and the general public can see that. So far he has done very well without ‘Your Votes’

Well then I guess he doesn’t need mine either. Don’t care for Brandon either.

    Hey KK….Circle Arms…FTMFW!!!!

  • KrazeeK120

    Hey KK’ ¦.Circle Arms’ ¦FTMFW!!!!

    Love you Bax….muah :)

Also….love Circle Arms. MJ…I need a video of Circle Arms, stat.

  • http://www.last.fm/user/chachithegreat chachi

Well then I guess he doesn’t need mine either. Don’t care for Brandon either.

    Hey KK’ ¦.Circle Arms’ ¦FTMFW!!!!

I might be able to look beyond the fact that he has the personality of a rock if his head grew to normal size.

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

WTF is “circle arms”? I’m guessing a part of one of Evan’s video packages. But I won’t get to watch the show in its entirety until tomorrow night, so just curious.

ETA: Also, sorry, I can’t help it, but I like Brandon. Not as much as I like Jason, or liked Joshua or Danny, but I think Brandon’s a fab dancer and I look forward to watching him every week. Can’t say that about all of them.

But, after Jason leaves tomorrow, Janette will be getting all of my votes from here on out. Chica is fierce, fabulous, and I heart her!

  • Grammie Kari

Blankslate, Cat wore her hair like this last season. It is tucked up and under. She still has her beautiful hair.

  • Sunshinegirl

I would love to see Jeanine paired up with Brandon or Ade, who seem to be the best guys this season. Mary was right to put her on the Hot Tamale Train…that girl is fierce! I think she makes Phillip look good because our attention is always drawn right to her that it makes Phillip’s lack of technique less noticeable. I do think Janette is excellent, but Jeanine has something more personable about her that makes me like her. She’s fun, cute, and sexy all at the same time.

  • baxter

Sarah- It was part of the hip hop routine Evandi did tonight. That’s what Chachi, KK and I named it.

Good luck tomorrow my dear. Fingers, toes and eyes are all crossed for ya!!!

  • KrazeeK120

    I second Bax.

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

Cool, thanks! The spoiler description of that hip hop sounded cool, so I’ll probably like it. Just only saw a few of the dances so far. Also, thanks for the crossed everything. Hee.

  • canadiandcfan

    i really enjoyed tonights episode!!
Ade was fantastic in that Disco routine. He can reaaaallly move & i’m loving it

Janette & Brandon are completely untouchable for me right now. un-freakin-believable routines, the chemistry, the technique… everything. yowzaa!

I cannoy help but love Evan. I just wish I could keep him in my pocket and dance along with him. Randi’s a really strong dancer.

And Jeanine was so friggin hot I could hardly stand it. She is simply stunning and really stood out for me tonight. She was incredible in that first number and smoldering in the Jive.

Still cannot bring myself to like Caitlin & Jason, but thats been the same pretty much since week 1. a whole lotts meh for me

    great show!

  • http://www.last.fm/user/chachithegreat chachi

And that is just my opinion!

KK, I’m pretty sure that’s not allowed. You must follow the groupthink, girl. Big Brother is watching you. ;P

Sarah,GOOD LUCK TOMORROW! I WILL BE ROOTING FOR YOU FROM MY OFFICE

Edit: I fail at quoting the right people. W/E ALL OF YOUR OPINIONS ARE TOTALLY VALID, EXCEPT MINE BECAUSE I AM A FAILURE.

  • KrazeeK120

KK, I’m pretty sure that’s not allowed. You must follow the groupthink, girl. Big Brother is watching you. ;P

I can’t believe you’re referencing 1984 on the Idol blog, cc. LOL :)

  • NOLA

I love Melissa and Ade, I think that they are the best couple this show has had since Benji and Donyelle back in season 2.

I agree! Most of the contestants just left me blah tonight. I don’t care for Brandon; but thought he had a great night. I think Evan is as cute as a button; but his shortness kills it for me. He looks like he’s 3 feet tall on the stage. Bummer. Love Phillip and thought he and Jeanine did very well tonight; but that Russian Folk Dance sucked gutter water. I hope his fans don’t hold that against him, as it wasn’t his fault he got stuck with that crap.

Did I mention that I just don’t like Jason & Caitlin? LOL

  • BootStar

I’d bet money that Cat’s hair was just pinned up. On my HD you could see a few pieces fall out and they were fixed during the commercial break. God, I love her. Is she the cutest thing ever?

I voted for the first time this season to save Kupono and Kayla. I think she was over-pimped in the beginning, but that’s not her fault, and I admire her for coming out essentially barefaced (at least compared to how she’s been made up all season) on that first dance, which was extremely moving. And I love Kupono. I think he’s gorgeous, and I love his OTT emotion. (Not sure where exactly he insulted Kayla, but I sure didn’t catch it.)

I think the propping up of Philip is a bit ridiculous. If any of the other guys had danced as poorly as he did tonight, they’d have been booed by the judges. And I do think the Russian choreographers dumbed down that dance bigtime for him. Have the judges ever insulted choreographers the way they did those Russians tonight? They weren’t even in the audience, were they?

Brandon and Jeanette are still my favorites, along with Ade and Melissa, but I know the judges won’t send them home regardless of how they finish in the judging.

  • Grammie Kari

Some of you have mentioned that Jeanine has something special that makes her stand out. It is a movie star quality sort of like some of the 1940s movie stars. Rita Hayworth had that quality of women want to be friends with her, while men want to make love to her.

I believe Mary said she could see Jeanine on a Broadway stage. I do too.

I feel sorry for the judges having to send one of the girls home. I suppose it will be Caitlyn.

  • rayni

I’ve looked back over the evening and couldn’t keep my eyes off Kayla in the addiction dance, Jeanine in the jive, Janette in the tango, Randi in anything and Brandon in the Wade piece. Everything and everybody else has fallen away. Janette is short, too isn’t she? Evan will wind up with her. How funny would Phillip and Melissa be?

  • eyin

I think Caitlin is going home for sure. I think Jason has a good chance of getting the boot too, but I won’t be surprised if they kick Evan to the curb. I hope not.

  • d. b. cooper

Can a brotha get a Janette and Jeanine pairing? Say amen. I’m only half kidding. If Brandon has to go elsewhere I hope it’s to Jeanine. None of the other men are worthy of Janette, so I have no real preference there. Perhaps Ade, but he couldn’t keep up. Maybe Jason, since he’s kind of a cipher and wouldn’t pull focus, but I think he’s going home this week.

Other than the two Janette/Brandon dances, which were magical, and Jeanine, my favorite part of the show was Cat Deeley’s reaction to Screaming Lady calling Nigel an “English muffin.” Straightening her arm and repeating it as if joyfully surprised at the effrontery. The cheek of some people. It was as precious and cute as your first born.

  • callitags

Kayla & Kupono’s contemporary dance tonight is the first one this season that has really hit me in the gut. Absolutely brilliant.

  • stelladallas

I think Cat’s hair was a faux bob. I bet it will be long and flowing again tomorrow.

I loved Randi and Evan’s first dance…so sweet and perfect. And circle arms indeed! I don’t think the judges gave the choreography or the dancers enough credit. Phillip always seems to get a pass, however, on his lack of any sort of dance technique. Plus, the choreographers never give him very much to do. But Jeanine is excellent!

Good thing Kayla and Kupono’s contemporary dance was so stunning because they didn’t “get” the West Side Story choreography at all.

I think Nigel wants Melissa to win so that he can flaunt the diversity of winners they’ve had each season: swing dance guy, contemporary gal, hip hop dude and oh my!… now even a classical ballerina! Janette would also fit the bill of diversity as a salsa chick. Plus, he probably thinks it’s time for a girl to win again.

  • eyin

BTW, it’s not fair to compare Randi and Evan to Pasha and Anya (and even Lacey). Yes, they were contestants on the show but they’re also ballroom dancers. Randi and Evan are not.

  • TopCatDC

BTW, it’s not fair to compare Randi and Evan to Pasha and Anya (and even Lacey). Yes, they were contestants on the show but they’re also ballroom dancers. Randi and Evan are not.

My viewpoint is that the standard of judging should be “What was the choreographer’s intent?” And since Pasha and Anya are the choreographers, the way they would do the dance is a relevant point.

Tyce was also pointing to Danny and Lacey as an example of how it should be done; instructing Evan to use Danny’s salsa movement as a model. I don’t think he was putting Evan down; he was just encouraging him to go back and study those tapes to see how the arms and hands should snap. Danny, of course, was a contemporary dancer, not a latin ballroom dancer – so he made the transition that Evan needs to make.

  • AZIdolFan

the kupono & kayla mia dance was amazing. it was truly the first dance this season that left my mouth hanging open. it really was perfect. unfortunetly i hated their second dance. i still threw a few votes their way but not as many as i did to evan/randi & ade/melissa. i LOVE both those couples. i’m kinda hoping ade gets kayla next week. i think they would do really well together.

funny i keep mixing jeanie & janette up. for some reason i forget who is who if they show them without their partners. that’s not good. appartentely they are both loved here. and i think they are good but i don’t know.

brandon, i’m still not fond of. i think it’s his head. or the way he smiles. it looks like it hurts him. he’s a good dancer but i’m not voting for him.

caitlyn & jason, i voted for. i like them and they have been getting shafted for a while.

i think it will be kupono and caitlyn that get the boot. maybe jason instead. either way the bootees will still be alternates on the tour.

  • primetimemom

I’m not voting tonight. Just got a bill for 300 dollars for texting for Adam and my husband is livid. I thought we had unlimited texting. Please check before you vote!

  • Dlynne

I think Evan is a doll but he’s too one-dimensional. After this amount of time, he should be better. Same goes for Phillip. I like his personality but when he’s dancing outside his genre, it’s just not good.

I agree that the girls are really outstanding this season. I feel sorry for Caitlin because I think she would have done better if she had another partner.

I LOVED Kayla’s and Kupono’s dance. It was really powerful. I also really enjoyed Melissa and Ade tonight, too. Brandon and Janette really stole the show, though.

But I am pulling for Janette. The girl hasn’t had any formal training to speak of (I believe she learned to Salsa at home) and she is amazing at everything they give her. I love that.

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

As I stated before, I haven’t watched last night’s dances, but I’ve felt all season long that Caitlin was the one holding Jason down, not the other way around. They remind me a lot of Lauren and Neil from a couple seasons ago. Should be a great pair on paper, but it just doesn’t translate. They both probably would have been better with other partners. Unfortunately, they don’t have Nigel’s support like L&N did, so they’re goners tonight.

MJ, I have to disagree on Ade and Melissa. I think he’s capable of a lot more than what his choreographera so far have given him. Up to this point, he’s served as Melissa’s personal “lifter” with a few random pirouettes and leaps thrown in. IMO, their routines have been choreographed to highlight HER, not him. He’ll probably be the same for Kayla next week, but I hope there’s a choreographer out there will to do more with his talent and abilities than just make him the designated “strong guy” of the season.

  • geekygirl

Kayla & Kupono’s contemporary dance tonight is the first one this season that has really hit me in the gut. Absolutely brilliant.

This! I don’t particularly like either of them but that even made me tear up! Tonight’s show was brilliant, I really enjoyed it, sitting down drinking my morning coffee watching the vids. Thank you MJ, and I agree that it is a travesty that AGT is a higher rating than this! Yes America has talent and they are on THIS show!

Just wow, great show. Even the not so great numbers I enjoyed, I think the bar was so high this show! Now who to put my points on? I was number 1 two weeks ago and last week got 0 points! lol.

  • https://twitter.com/draddee Sunn

Mia’s Addiction choreography was so powerful. Kayla and Kupono performed it exquisitely. That dance hit me hard, it really floored me.

My favourite dance of the season. When I first saw Kupono I thought he was meh. But ever since he and Kayla partnered (last week I think) I’ve been astonished by the boy. Today he converted me completely.

    Oh my, that was amazing.

  • dhunken

I think the Judges want Evan gone. They are always too too hard on him. I think he is one of the better dancers on the show. He did a fantastic job with the Samba. This is the third week in a row they have been so critical of him. I think it is because of his height. At of all the male dancers he dances the most masculine. Brandon is great but sometimes a get feminine movement from him. Ade is great too but last night seemed the most uncomfortable. Philip is just amazing at what he does and did the best dance outside of his comfort zone with the Jive. But he is the least versatile. Kupona is a niche dancer to me. He does out of the box well but don’t like his personality. He is off putting. Jason is good but don’t always remember his dances. He has no “it” factor. so back to Evan who I think is the best all around male dancer. SO I can only assume the judges want him gone because of his height which is sad. The women for me at this point are all great. Really don’t have a favorite or someone I think who should go. This year is proving to be the most difficult to choose who should go because really they are all great in each of their own way.

  • kimberann

I prefer the dancers with personality and ability. I like Janette, Randi, Jeanine, Brandon, Kupono, and Phillip. I think Caitlin, Kayla, Melissa, Ade are total bores. Don’t care how they dance, they are like watching robots.

  • butte009

MJ, I have to disagree on Ade and Melissa. I think he’s capable of a lot more than what his choreographera so far have given him. ITA. Quite a few of the group routines have Ade front and center for the guys (Mia’s, Shayne’s) and I don’t even notice Melissa – although most of the girls did get pushed to the back for Mia’s routine. Ade is very good, but he has become the mule. Let the boy dance!

Actually I won’t be sorry to see that partnership end.

  • unique28v

Dial Idol has Jeanette and Brandon ahead of the other couples by a large margin. The bottom 3 couples according to Dial Idol are:

    Caitlin & Jason
    Melissa & Ade
    Jeanine & Phillip

If this prediction turns out to be true, I think its safe to say that Caitlin and Jason are going home.

  • Dr. Tracey

Melissa and Ade – 1. Weak. Neil and Sara’s disco routine to Knock on Wood was a thousand times better as was Brandon and Janette’s earlier this season.
    2. Meh, wasn’t much waltzing it was all about the lifts. I hope they are bottom 3 even though they won’t go home.

Kayla and Kupono – 1. I think that was probably my favorite Mia routine. I thought they danced it really well, they always make it believable for me. I know they aren’t favorites here but I like them.
    2. I just don’t like broadway much but they danced it well.

Jason and Caitlin – 1. Way better than last week. I really enjoy watching Jason.
    2. Beautiful routine.

Philip and Jeanine – 1. Good God, what the hell did they do to deserve that routine? It was crap but they made the best of it. I think Philip does an awesome job with what he’s given, he deserves more credit. Nix the ‘folk’ in future puleeze and thank you Tyce for addressing the ‘dancers’.
    2. Thank God they had 2 routines! The second was awesome, they both did great.

Randi and Evan – 1. Just o.k. I find myself watching Randi all the time, even though I don’t think she’s that great, she reminds me of Kelli Pickler a little lol.
    2. Not sexy enough, i’d rather have seen Pascha dance that.

Brandon and Jeanette – 1. Janette is crazy good, I love this couple but I didn’t feel the heat from that routine. They danced it really well though.
    2. Wade wonderful. Loved it more than the first.

Cat looked luverly last night, love when she puts her hair up like that, it suits her.

Bottom 3 for me – Melissa and Ade, Randi and Evan and Jason and Caitlin.
Who I think will be bottom 3 – Jason and Caitlin, K and K and Philip and Jeanine.

  • justshootme

I thought the Addiction piece was amazing, and I generally find Mia’s pieces pretty annoying. I really hope K and K manage to avoid bottom three, because I feel like Kupono could end up booted. I know he might not be the best technically but he can really capture a character.

I am so over NappyTabs (sounds like a diaper brand) it’s not even funny.

Loved seeing Pasha and Anya, wish they could’ve danced the routine instead of R and E.

  • Sunshinegirl

Caitlin has been really good this whole time I think. Even when she was in the bottom she got high praise for her solo. I think her and Jason’s highlight was the Bollywood dance the first week. That kind of set their own bar so high that no matter how good they have been since, it’s hard to live up to. And I guess with the girls being so stacked this season, Caitlin seems to lack the excitement and flair of the others, so that may do her in. Jeanine was supposed to be the sacrificial lamb this year, the girl no one knew anything about, but I love that she’s really stepped up to the plate and made a name for herself even with a partner who lacks great technique. It saddens me that Jeanine will likely have to make a B3 appearance tonight, but the good thing is we’ll get to see her do another solo and unless she really effs it up, it sounds like the judges will keep her.

  • lucy

But I am pulling for Janette. The girl hasn’t had any formal training to speak of (I believe she learned to Salsa at home) and she is amazing at everything they give her. I love that.

I love Janette too, but I’ve read in several places that she’s pretty extensively cross-trained in several dance disciplines, with lots of contemporary and ballet technique, and when she’s danced competitively — which is a lot — she’s competed solo frequently, with only a hint of salsa in her routines.

So once again this is the producers conveniently manipulating the backstories so that we think somebody’s not what they actually are.

I love Janette, and I looked this stuff up because it just didn’t seem right to me that somebody could be a “home-trained salsa” dancer and do the stuff she does. And, as it turns out, she’s not.

I don’t like the way they won’t trust the audience with the truth.

  • sallyas1

I’ve been disappointed overall this season. Every week there has always been good dances, but nothing that wowed me or I found memorable in comparison to past season’s dances like “The Table Dance”, or Bleeding Love, or “The Bench”.

Melissa and Ade – Disco. I never like disco on this show. The disco performances always seem to consist of lift after lift after lift, with a few spins thrown in there. Music means nothing. This performance was standard SYTYCD disco. Nothing memorable. I give it a B.

Kayla and Kupono – Contemporary. My second favorite performance of the night. I do agree with Tyce when he says Kupono could be a little stronger in the body. He had the menacing face going on. Just wish the body would have been there too. But they portrayed the storyline very well and I would give it an A.

Caitlin and Jason -Foxtrot. It was nice. But I didn’t get the whole “gangster” storyline that was mentioned in their video. I give it a B.

Jeanine and Phillip – Russian Folk Dance. I could not finish this. Folksy doesn’t begin to cover it. Jeanine and Phillip did good with what they had, but the choreography, costumes, etc were awful. I give it a B for dancers, a D for everything else.

Randi and Evan – Hip Hop. Tied for my 3rd favorite performance of the night. I liked that it showed the softer side of hip hop instead of all that hard hitting, nasty face stuff we usually see. It fit Randi and Evan’s personalities and it was just very sweet. I give it an A.

Janette and Brandon – Argentine Tango. Tied for third.
I’m not really sure it deserved the standing O from the judges, but it was very very good. I wish they had been closer together during the fancy footwork. I was in Argentina a couple of years ago and I remember seeing how fast the feet were and how close the dancers were to each other, making them in danger of tripping their partner. This didn’t have that element of danger to it, but it was still very good. I’ll give it an A.

Melissa and Ade – Waltz. Again very nice. Nothing memorable. I disagree with Tyce regarding the music and the dance not “matching”. This particular version of Natural Woman was very mellow and sweet. I think the dance fit with this version. I’ll give it a B.

Kayla and Kupono – Broadway. Dance wise it was good. Performance wise it was pretty bad. They seemed to drop the storyline midway through, or it fell flat, or something. Not the slightest bit believable. I’ll give it a C.

Caitlin and Jason – Lyrical Jazz. I remember liking it, but I don’t remember any details about it. Because of that I’ll give it a B-.

Jeanine and Phillip – Jive. A WHOLE lot better than that Russian monstrosity. Very fun. I’ll give it a B.

Randi and Evan – Samba. I thought it was good. Didn’t see the chemistry though. Did they shake their hips once? I’ll give it a B-, and the judges a D for missing the non-existent hip action.

Janette and Brandon – Pop Jazz. Loved loved LOVED it. Easily my most memorable performance of the season so far (and I have seen very little of those this year). Loved the storyline they were portraying, the dance fit the music to perfection. Chemistry was right on. This was my standing O of the night. A

  • unique28v

So once again this is the producers conveniently manipulating the backstories so that we think somebody’s not what they actually are.

Yup. I usually flip back and forth to another show during the judges critique.

  • brie200

I swear I’m in a different world than everyone else this season with this show, but I’m not feeling this season much.

First, Melissa? Not that impressed. I’d be more impressed with her if she had to do more than the slow balletic dances. Yes, disco last night. But that’s the first thing that she’s had to do on this show that remotely pushed her outside of her comfort zone. She did okay, but there have been better discos on this show. Too many lifts and it looked sloppy.

The thing is I LIKE Ade, but I want him away from Melissa because I agree they are basically using him as a prop to lift Melissa when he has so much more to offer. I’m hoping a new partnership might put some of the spotlight on him. If the couple has been coddled so far, it has far more to do with Melissa than Ade.

I’ve also never really felt Evan and Randi. Their hip hop actually had close to zero hip hop in it, so it was a bit ridiculous. The samba was a hot mess and I was a bit shocked at the praise for Randi in it as she looked just as uncomfortable and off as Evan.

At this point the only Final Four I want to see are Brandon, Janette, Jeannine and Ade, but the chances of that happening seem slim.

  • lucy

I swear I’m in a different world than everyone else this season with this show, but I’m not feeling this season much.

Well, I sort of feel this way. I just love watching dancing and seeing different dance styles, and I do think that this bunch of kids is quite competent and good.

What I miss from the previous seasons though is that I’m not absolutely crazy about any of them. For me, nobody totally has the it factor, particularly as couples. Last year, for example, by this stage in the game I was already really enamored with Courtney/Gev, Katee/Josh, and Chelsie/Mark. For most routines, I couldn’t take my eyes off those couples and wanted to watch their routines over and over, and I’ve felt that way about at least one couple and/or an individual or two every season (Danny Tidwell, for example). Whereas, this season, I’m really enjoying the show, and I do like some of them better than others, but I’m not crazy enamored with anybody, which is a change.

  • unique28v

The thing is I LIKE Ade, but I want him away from Melissa because I agree they are basically using him as a prop to lift Melissa when he has so much more to offer. I’m hoping a new partnership might put some of the spotlight on him.

I completely agree!! Ade is definitely used as a prop for his strength. I hope he’s featured more starting next week with whoever he is paired with. I think Melissa might be lost without Ade. I don’t really see her with anyone else…..

  • unique28v

I’ve also never really felt Evan and Randi. Their hip hop actually had close to zero hip hop in it, so it was a bit ridiculous. The samba was a hot mess and I was a bit shocked at the praise for Randi in it as she looked just as uncomfortable and off as Evan.

That routine was laughable. There wasn’t an ounce of hip hop in it. They gave them a sort of jazz type routine since neither are hip hop dancers and put a label on it. I don’t thinkt he Samba was as bad as they said, and Randi was not better than Evan in it. I notice the judges critique the guys a lot harsher than the girls.

  • brie200

Unfortunately I kind of fear them sticking Ade with Kayla so he can continue to just be used as a prop for his strength. Especially since they’ve danced together pre-SYTYCD.

I didn’t mean to say this group isn’t talented, but I think the manipulation has been even greater than usual this season in terms of catering to certain dancers so they can remain in their own comfort zones. I think in part that is why Brandon/Janette have become so popular. They’re the only couple really being pushed every week and still delivering. You can argue Caitlin/Jason are being pushed but I wouldn’t say they are delivering.

The waltzes and the foxtrots have become more contemporary-lite type pieces to accomodate the contemporary dancers (see Melissa/Ade barely having to dance in closed hold last night). See Kayla (and Kherington from last season) being allowed to dance barefoot. The hip hops don’t contain hip hop (Randi/Evan).

Meh. Maybe I’m still just pissed about the blatant manipulation last week of giving everyone dances in their wheelhouse and saddling Karla/Vitolio with the quickstep and then making them dance after an infomercial to boot. They rocked it, but they knew the bus was coming for them the second the dance assignments were handed out.

  • lavender1960

How can America’s Got Talent be beating this show? Everyone expecting a Susan Boyle moment, don’t hold your breath America.

Great show overall, I think Evan’s going home for sure. He just lacked that extra pop/zing that the other guys have.

And speaking of Wade Robson, master choreographer, guess who was one of Michael Jackson’s “special friends”when he was 7 years old, back in the day – just reading about Wade being called to testify in the 2005 trial. It’s a small world ain’t it, Wade is an Aussie?

  • SpenserJ

I think Janette will win, and deservedly so.

I hope so. I think she’s awesome, and if she did win, it would be the first time I ever picked the winner from the beginning. I’m usually horrible at this crap. (As evidenced by how shitty I do in the pools).

So, hmm, overall I still like Brandon/Janette and Melissa/Ade the best.

Evan to me, is just a huge disappointment at this point. He’s not nearly as good or as entertaining as I thought he was going to be. I know a lot of people really like him, so it’s probably just me. But I cannot stay on the Evan train, time to jump off.

I suppose it could be the choreography. That hip hop was so clearly not a hip hop at all. But, I think Pasha created a fairly decent Samba routine, they just couldn’t do it.

  • Sunshinegirl

I started watching in the middle of last season and I really enjoy the show a lot. Unlike Idol though, I just watch SYTYCD and let myself be entertained by it rather than getting all emotionally tied up in it. It’s strange too because I have been a dancer myself, so you’d think I would be much more emotional about the contestants on this show. This season, I believe I waited til Vegas week to start watching too becuase I had no desire to see all the crappy people…I barely have patience for the Idol auditions as it is. So perhaps not following backstories helps me stay above the fray a bit. I will admit that Jeanine has become a favorite of mine, but I’m not obsessing. It’s actually a relief to just watch the show and not have all these conspiracy theories or even notice judges’ pimping of certain contestants. I just don’t see it. I think when Idol rolls around again, I’ll skip the auditions; maybe that’ll help me have a more balanced view of things, I hope :)

  • Sunshinegirl

How do they pair up the dancers? Is it the judges choice or random draw like the styles are drawn?

  • brie200

Sunshine, do you mean at Top 10? From what I understand of it, they pretend the draw is random (the picking out of a hat), but the producers are the ones basically deciding who they want to see with who.

Take Will last season. He was a judges favorite, but was never really doing all that well with the viewers at home. First week after Top 10 they paired him with Katee, who was already popular, and gave them a Pas De Deux. There was no chance in that assignment.

  • Sunshinegirl

Anytime they are paired up is what I meant, both at Top 20 and Top 10. I guess yeah I can see that it likely is a producer thing.

  • Ladybug

A little off-topic, but am I the only one who finds it depressing that Simon Cowell’s wretched ‘America’s Got Talent’ is kicking SYTYCD’s ass in the ratings? Oh, the humanity’ ¦

That just totally sucks. SYTYCD is proving to be one of the very best of talent programming out there. AGT is only … a sideshow. I guess more people like sideshows. :thumbdown_tb:

Evan has been and is my favorite, but he is not proving to be someone who is growing as a dancer, it makes me sad to say! I enjoyed the hip-hop dance and hope he makes the leap to the top ten. I want to see him get to do at least ONE B’way routine!! (Oh, and Evan, sweetie — maybe spray tan?? Just a thought.)

Again Janette and Brandon were the clear winners for the night. Both dances were off the chain good, especially Wade’s Pop Jazz. And Janette was stunning doing the tango.

Someone above mentioned how strong the ladies were this year and I agree. Any one of several, or all, of them could win and I would feel ok with it. I was not ok with Sabra the year she won. Danny, to me, still remains the best SYT has ever had and for Sabra to “win” his year was, well, perhaps a bit manipulated?

This season is so much better than last it is just amazing. Thank goodness as I was largely turned off last year and particularly by the winner.

These guys rock and thank you, again, MJ for the coverage and a place to yak about it.

  • SpenserJ

Ade is definitely used as a prop for his strength.

I think, with this pair, the choreographer’s just can’t help themselves. Ade’s strength is super-human, and the ease with which he does a straight-arm lift is just not something you see very often. And, Melissa is just beauty in motion. Her position in and out of the lifts is second only to her lines during the lift. Her body is spectacular. They make extremely difficult lifts look effortless, and they look absolutely stunning doing it. It’s just too hard for the choreographers to resist putting all of the lifts in, because they probably just don’t see that kind of pairing every day.

That said, with the disco routine, I thought Ade was much more than a prop. I really thought he brought the funk. That was very fun to watch.

Again Janette and Brandon were the clear winners for the night.

I agree. I think they’re both just plain fantastic. So much freaking talent in that pairing. I absolutely LOVE watching them.

Some of the other stuff last night was just odd. That Russian folk dance routine was horrible. I felt so bad for Phillip & Jeanine. I don’t think Phillip is a strong dancer in anything but his own style, but I’d hate to see him go on the night he got saddled with that crap.

NappyTab’s alleged hip hop routine was maybe the weakest and lamest choreography I’ve ever seen on this show. And Evan & Randi just didn’t seem to be able to breathe any life into it.

  • reeboks1

i am not into janette. i think it’s really just because i don’t like her hair cut. oh well?! jeanine and randi impress me every time they hit the floor. ade is always impressive as well.

  • Dr. Tracey

I think the manipulation has been even greater than usual this season in terms of catering to certain dancers

    So it’s not just me.
I hadn’t really noticed much manipulation at all until last season, this season it seems blatantly obvious. I’ve been trying to convince myself that i’ve just been watching too much Idol, I hate to think this show is just as bad but yeah, it’s reality tv i’m only kidding myself if I believe it’s not fixed lol

I am not as impressed with Melissa as others are, sure she’s an o.k ballet dancer but I think she’s a one trick pony and Ade is definitely being used to showcase her. I’m also glad he’s losing her and I hope they pair him with someone like Jeanine and we actually get to see him dance rather than just haul someone around.

  • KrazeeK120

Is it just me…..or is a lot of the choreography completely lame-o this season? I’m starting to think it’s not the dancers, but the choreography that is just meh. It seems like Wade is the only person who can still make interesting and fun routines.

My annoyance with NappyTabs’ “lyrical hip-hop” is growing, in part, because there apparently is no other hip-hop choreographer to be found this season. Lyrical hip hop once in awhile is OK, but for every single hip-hop routine? Come on. Although….I love Circle Arms still.

Everything else kind of runs together in my head. There are very few individual routines I can actually remember, and that’s not good.

Although…most of my favorite routines have come from Top 10 onward, so I’m not losing hope yet.

    SpenserJ,

I agree about Evan. I think many people might be leaving his train. Really all I want to see from him is a “Singing in the Rain” type of solo before he leaves the show. I had hoped he would be a more versatile dancer, but he, like Philip, is a standout in his genre, but not so great in other areas. That pains me to say, because he seems like a sweet kid. Maybe he and his brother could do a routine together. It was actually painful to watch him and Randi last night. They both seemed incredibly uncomfortable in the Samba.

And we need to remember that this is about selecting “America’s FAVORITE dancer.” Someone, up thread, mentioned how disappointed they were in Sabra’s win (and not Danny). I agree that Danny was a supreme technician, but he did not connect with the audience. I was shocked that he made it to the top 4. I think the only reason he did is because the judges told America, week after week, how stupid it was for not recognizing the greatness of Danny Tidwell.

This year we may very well get another winner who is not the most technically proficient dancer. But that’s how it goes in these types of shows.

I’m such a huge Jeanine fan – I hope she has the chance to shine with a partner that is more capable then Phillip.

Also, I want to see Melissa do something like salsa or quickstep – which would take her so ridiculously out of her comfort zone just to see if she can do it.

I love Jeanine, Melissa and Randi. I just cannot understand the judges love of Kayla though – I think they nailed it last night when they told her that she needs to have more of an emotional connection – watching her leaves me cold. I also just can’t get into Janette but that might have to do with her partner (not a Brandon fan at all.)

Caitlin is probably the one to leave this week form the girls – and I think this show has been manipulated against her – we never got to see her do a true contemporary piece which is her strength.

The guys aren’t nearly as strong as the girls. Ade and Brandon probably have the most ability, but I just don’t like Brandon. And I love Evan even though he isn’t that technically brilliant there’s just something about him that draws you in. Phillip is great at his own stuff but he really can’t do much out of his own comfort zone, last night’s jive being an exception.

Jason and Kupono are alright. I like Jason better but I have a feeling he will be the one that is cut tonight unfortunately. I think if he had a better partner as well as better choreography he would have gone so much farther. he showed such potential n the first week. Again, like Caitlin his partner, he was never given a dance truly in his own style.

Someone, up thread, mentioned how disappointed they were in Sabra’s win (and not Danny). I agree that Danny was a supreme technician, but he did not connect with the audience. I was shocked that he made it to the top 4.

I thought Danny was a fabulous dancer, and I was with the judges in thinking “WTF America?!”. I couldn’t understand how other people weren’t connecting with him, when I totally was. That just goes to show you of course that I am completely out of touch with the rest of America – and Janette is doomed LOL.

That actually was the only year I was super-annoyed by the judges manipulation. I don’t think Sabra could have won without it. In fact, I don’t think without all of the tongue-baths, she would have even come in second. Although I did like her, and she’s obviously talented. So, that was probably just me too :)

That pains me to say, because he seems like a sweet kid.

Evan does seem like an adorable person. He’s just not exciting for me to watch (in anything other than his own style), and he has zero chemistry with his partner on the dance floor.

I think it’s clear that the judges like having him around, but don’t want him to win. If he lands in the bottom 3, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them boot him before the audience has their say. Nigel’s probably scared of Evan’s large fanbase.

  • dhunken

Gee I guess I watched a different show then some of the people on here. First I think Evan is a fantastic Dancer and I will be on the Evan train for quite some time and I think I am not alone. Best all around as far as the men go. I have never seen any of his performance as weak. The judges over pimping of certain people is convincing people that those dancer are better. Brandon is good but I think he over performs sometime makes it awkward. Evan is always smooth crisp and exudes personality and is always in character. If the judges were being as picking with the other dancers as they are with Evan believe me there is tons they could tear apart on all of them. But they seem to pick on Evan for the most minute details or criticize him on objectionable things like you should give more or studied the dance. What kind of crap is that to critique. They always say he dances it correctly. Which makes me feel they are trying to convince America not to vote him through. Which seems like it is working based on the comments I am reading here. By the way I say this as someone who was a pupil of Michael Barishnokoff so I do have some idea of what I am talking about. My feeling it is not his dancing they have a problem with its his height. Which I think sucks big time.

I think the bottom 3 will be

    Caitlin and Jason
Kupono and Kayla-Even though they had the best dance of the night. But I think Kupono put people off last week with his comment and dissing of Vitalio
    Philip and Jeanine.

I think Danny got as far as he did — and no farther — because he was a person that some audience members did connect to and others didn’t. I say that because I really got something out of his performances, felt them emotionally, etc. And I know others didn’t. …

Is Kayla like that, or is she one of the people who barely anybody connects to? I can’t figure that out from the response.

But I do think there are more categories than just “reaches the audience” and “hardly reaches any of the audience.” There’s also — “strongly connects with some of the audience.” That was Danny, I think….

Will … was he “reaches hardly any”? His technical skills and relatively early exit suggest to me that maybe he was.

  • SpenserJ

The judges over pimping of certain people is convincing people that those dancer are better.

I just enjoy other dancers more than I do Evan, and it has nothing to do with what the judges think.

I thought his hip hop was really weak and his Samba completely lacked hip action and the movements that make a Samba Samba-y.

  • mitchellvii

The WEIRD part for me is that at the beginning of the season, Kaitlin was my favorite. That being said, I really really really WANTED to like her.

BUT, you know, her dancing just bores me to tears. For some reason she seems stiff and robotic to me no matter what she does – kind of like a gymnast and not a dancer (which would make some sense I suppose).

With her looks a perky demeanor, she will do much better (and also make LOTS more money) as a broadcast journalist or actress of some sort.

  • mitchellvii

Evan is a wonderful dancer – it’s just too bad he is so damned ugly. Not to be mean, but he isn’t a pretty man and I think that hurts him a bit.

  • dhunken

Well I can at least find solitude in knowing MJ feels the same way i do about Evan and Randi’s Routines. She finds them better then what the judges are saying as the quotes below indicate.

Randi and Evan – Hip Hop by Tabitha and Napoleon – ‘Halo’ by Beyonce (iTunes)- The dancers play a couple who have found out they’re pregnant. Lots of great chemistry between these two. Both are doing a good job, despite stepping out of their comfort zone.

Randi and Evan – ‘Samba’ by Pasha and Anya – ‘Ritmo De Bom Bom’ by Jubaba – I enjoyed that, more than the judges did for sure. These two have lots of chemistry.

    Totally agree with you MJ

  • Dr. Tracey

I think Danny got as far as he did ‘” and no farther ‘” because he was a person that some audience members did connect to and others didn’t.

Danny was my favorite from season 3, I didn’t think he lacked a connection with the audience until the judges kept bringing it up. He ‘connected’ with me and I voted for him. I really enjoyed his performances, he was a joy to watch.
I also like Kayla for the same reasons, I love her performances, she pulls me right into them. I don’t really care about her personality, I enjoy watching Kayla dance and that’s why I vote for her.

  • Sunshinegirl

I think the majority of America is really completely clueless when it comes to dance and listen to the judges in order to form their opinions more than they want to admit.

  • Ladybug

Ahhh. Glad to see some share my Danny love. That was just a tremendous year, no question, with some of the best choreography evah.

I am still firmly on the Evan train, but am disappointed to find he is not as strong a dancer as I thought he might be in other styles. The samba, waltz, etc. are probably not going to be his strong suit because of his height. Sad to say.

Still, he has some amazing moves and I felt he had some terrific ones last night. And I feel the “butt” dance he and Randi did was one of the best this whole season.

Someone mentioned weaker choreography this year and I so agree. The final dance from Wade was a jolt, I think, for that very reason. I wish there were stronger across-the-board numbers for these very talented kids to perform.

    And, Russian folk dance? WTF????????????

  • impqueen

Wow, I am gonna come off like such a bitch right now. I am so sorry but I just can’t NOT say something…

Psst…I know spelling isn’t everyone’s thing, but please, for the love of all that his ballet, it’s Mikhail Baryshnikov. ABT, White Oak, the Baryshnikov Arts Center… his name is right there on the walls. Or just call him Misha, like everyone else who’s studied or worked with him.

    Okay, sorry, /OTbitchrant.

On topic, I think it’s Caitlin and Jason’s week to go. Caitlin has beautiful lines, but somehow her personality isn’t connecting, and Jason had grip problems in the foxtrot lifts that caused a few hitches. I feel bad for them – they keep getting the bottom of the choreography barrel. I feel like I really haven’t gotten to see what they can do. Jason’s technique isn’t there, and Caitlin sometimes just looks like she’s made of wood. Or a duck.

I just can’t get down with Evan and Randi anymore. Randi is cute, and not a bad dancer, but she’s not going to continue to do well against Janette, Jeanine and Melissa week after week. (Kayla has a lovely penchee arabesque, but she isn’t the whole package for me either.) I like Randi, but I think her time is comin’.

Brandon is my It Boy – Ade can move a piano with one arm and I think he can dance, too (not that we’ve gotten to see much of it yet). I’m meh on Kupono and Philip, although Kupono did better than I expected in the Mia number last night. But Evan… I want to love him, I do, but technically? Come on, now. He’s good at what he does, but too many routines have had to be choreographed around what he does, and I had hoped for better, and his technique just isn’t coming along.

I did love the butt dance, though.

  • lavender1960

dhunken, do you think the height issue vis a vis Evan is just because he won’t match up with the taller girls or the lack of height, Evan has the long torso with the shorter legs, shorter arms, makes it harder for your lines to look as elegant as someone who is taller – I mean the guy Nico who won Canada’s first SYTCD was one of the tallest if not the tallest men in the final 20. Along with being hot and fab.

You know it is not easy to do that Russian/Ukrainian folk dancing, I have seen quite a bit of it, and actually enjoy it, however I have seen far more complicated moves executed by 8 year olds, even for the female, than was displayed, I kept waiting for the big split jumps and none to be had – they never cut over to the choreographer, did they? Is that the last time for folk dancing you think? At least it wasn’t a Dutch clog dance – it’s no Riverdance.

  • dhunken

impqueen Please follow the rules and don’t comment on my stuff. So I misspelled sorry. But rules are Rules Right MJ :nono_tb:

  • lavender1960

Do you think the audience relies on the judges even more than on American Idol?

You don’t have to understand the intricacies of dance to know what you like when you see it.

Now when you don’t know the intricacies you may miss the fact that someone has danced better than you perceived and let’s face it certain genres just don’t allow for the same connection factor with the audience and as noted it also comes down to the choreographer.

What is the ultimate end goal of most of these dancers on SYTYCD? Broadway, a dance troupe? videos? choreography? all of the above?

  • dhunken

I think it is the vis on Evan size and that when they put him with the taller girls he may not be able to do the lifts. I think they are wrong but can understand the concern. The judges may feel that he is more apt to drop a different partner then Randi. But this is not really a couples contest. I like him the best.

  • dhunken

What is the ultimate end goal of most of these dancers on SYTYCD? Broadway, a dance troupe? videos? choreography? all of the above?

My guess would be any or all of the above.

  • Jx223

I think that either Evan or Jason are going home tomorrow night. But I wouldn’t mind if it was Kupono that was going home instead. Kupono is my least favorite male dancer.

I think if Caitlin is in the bottom three she will go home. I think that the if Randi was in the bottom three couples, that the judges would save her. I think that she has put forth a lot of effort in her dances, and I think that her dancing has looked better in her and Evan’s routines than Evan’s has looked.

I think that more than likely Caitlin will probably go home and that either Evan or Jason will go home.

  • brie200

I think it’s almost a given that Caitlin will be the girl leaving, unless Randi falls over during her solo (if she has to do one). Though as Nigel has admitted via his twitter, the judges already pretty much know who they want to send home before the solos and that is Caitlin.

The guys it is a bit more shady because while I expect it to be Jason, they also came down hard on Evan and it would be interesting to see if they took the chance to get rid of Phillip pre Top 10. At this point tour doesn’t matter because Nigel and co. can bring along anyone they want, so even if Philip were to get cut they would still bring him. Same for Evan.

As for the girls, honestly Karla is better suited to be an alternate on tour than Caitlin, but knowing the show they would bring Caitlin. Just in the sense that Karla is far more versatile and the whole point of the alternates is that they are there to sub for people when they get injured. That and she could do either her Falling Slowly or quickstep on tour, even if she has to dance with other partners. Caitlin IMO doesn’t even really have any tour worthy performances. Maybe Bollywood, but I didn’t even like that one.

  • impqueen

Apologies, dhunken. I should have left your spelling alone.

  • dhunken

    Accepted!

  • Sunshinegirl

Though as Nigel has admitted via his twitter, the judges already pretty much know who they want to send home before the solos and that is Caitlin.

What?! Nigel actually said they wanted to send Caitlin home?!

BTW, does anyone remember the name of Caitlin’s sister whom they featured with her in Vegas? I hope she tries out for Season 6 and makes it in. I thought she was very strong and was surprised she got cut over Caitlin who did seem to struggle more there.

  • brie200

Sorry Sunshine…I phrased that badly. He didn’t say anything about Caitlin, but last week Nigel did admit that usually the judges have an idea of who they want to send home, but they can change their minds based on a solo. That’s not really much of a surprise, but the gist of it was the judges already know what they want to do prior to the results show.

As per Caitlin, I just meant that the judges made it pretty obvious last night that she is the girl they want gone. Even with Randi, Mary put her on the hot tamale train and told her she deserved Top 10. They pretty much guaranteed Janine she wasn’t going anywhere and Kayla/Melissa are their pets. Janette won’t hit B3 and the judges love her.

  • Jayd

“I think Kupono put people off last week with his comment and dissing of Vitalio”

I missed that, what did he say? Was that on the results show, cuz I missed it last week. Kupono has been one of my favorites, so. not happy to hear that.

I like Brandon (dancing), Evan (personality), and Jason (maybe not so much his dancing as the other “parts” heh). Jury’s still out on Ade.

I did like Caitlin and Jason’s second performance better than the judges did.
I’m not a Philip fan, but I like Jeanine. Janette is amazing. Not sure how I feel about Kayla right now.

These are all just gut responses, as I’m not a trained dancer, just going by what I like personally.

  • Sunshinegirl

I do like Kayla, not as much as Jeanine, but Kayla has a really gorgeous presence about her that is mesmerizing. But Jeanine has the awesome flair that makes her exciting to watch. And Caitlin has this elegance and grace about her that is just amazing to behold. I’d say they each have different strengths. I don’t think any of the girls left are bad. The only one I never liked in the Top 20 was Asuka and that seemed to be the way a lot of people felt about her. I didn’t see or hear a lot of love for her ever.

  • GlamGirlLee

I think it will be Evan to go home next. When they start mixing up couples Evan is just too short and not overwhelmingly strong enough a dancer to compensate for the lack of extra visual punch (JMO) or stature. If it were only solos he has a chance to out-survive Jason, who is pretty bland. My guess is unless he gets enough votes to avoid bottom 3 the judges will send him home. I remember the judges trashed one tall girl from some southern state in one of the previous seasons, who looked gorgeous and graceful to me btw, because she was taller than the guy, and the judges thought their dance looked weird. That was the most absurd “critique” I ever heard.

Ade & Melissa and Brandon & Jeanette are my favorite of this season. I miss Joshua and Katee. Ade hasn’t been shown off much since Melissa is usually showcased in the choreographs so far. It will be interesting how he does with other girls. Jeanette is such a little firecracker. I mean, she looks kind of ordinary off stage and her haircut is worse than terrible. But, on stage, wow, she pulls off just about anything! Brandon is pretty impressive in his versatility and strength, too. I hope these guys make it all the way to the end.

Someone should make a recap video similar to the one made for Randy Jackson in AI:
“(Scream) blah blah blah, YES, YOU DID! Blah blah blah, YES, IT WAS! Blah
blah blah, YES I DID! Blah blah blah, (more scream)…”
Lady, inject some more botox so that you can’t scream the “YES, I/IT/YOU something” verse *all-the-time*, geez. But I have to say she was pretty funny when she joked about botox in one of the previous episodes. She does have a sense of humor. Heh.

  • SpenserJ

Kupono is my least favorite male dancer.

I put my points on him. I think his time is up.

I think the majority of America is really completely clueless when it comes to dance and listen to the judges in order to form their opinions more than they want to admit.

I suppose it has some influence on some people. But, dance is a visual art form. The whole point of it is to move your audience, regardless of whether or not they know diddly about technique. Most people will respond to a dynamic routine. And, there are really a lot of talented dancers in this group. So, the worst thing I think that they can be right now, is dull.

The bulk of these dancers, at this point, dance at such a high level that it would be difficult for even trained dancers to rank them accurately based on their technical skills. And because dance is art, all of the other stuff matters too.

There really is no “right” answer to who is the best dancer here. And, since we’re picking our favorite – that doesn’t really matter anyway.

I adore Brandon. Baxter doesn’t like him (I’ll speak with you about that later Bax!). Both of those opinions are legitimate regardless of his skill level. His dancing speaks to me and draws my attention. Not so for some others on here. I don’t really think it matters what we know about the ins and outs of dance technique.

In a competition like this, we’re going to be drawn to different people for different reason. I’ve danced in the past, and I know a thing or two about technique. But even with that, I go with my gut and what really makes me say “wow!”. Sometimes that’s technique and sometimes it’s a whole host of other things.

Right. What other host(ess) is as gorgeous as she is, doesn’t mind squatting down in her mini dress and highheels to hug a distraught contestant (Twitch, I think, from last season) and is not afraid to put on his “grill” on a live TV show?

    Ryan Seacrest = sadistic twit

This is sad but true I think. Who would TPTB pair him with. Jeanie? My guess is they want more flexibility in the pairing down the road and as people get voted off.

This is sad but true I think. Who would TPTB pair him with. Jeanie? My guess is they want more flexibility in the pairing down the road and as people get voted off.

The problem is that the girls this year are far better than the guys. Kupono and Jason are boring as all get-out, Phillip is downright AWFUL at anything that isn’t hip-hop related, and we’re not too sure of Ade’s ability because all he’s done is thrown Melissa over his head. Only Brandon seems to have wide technical skills, but he has no personality, so that’s no good either. Oh yeah, and Evan is short so that doesn’t work.

On the flip side, Janette, Jeanine, Randi, and Kayla have all proven to be magnificent, beautiful dancers. Melissa hasn’t gone too far out of her style, so I can’t really make a judgment on her yet. Caitlin is for sure the weak link there.

Maybe they should just pair the girls with each other and stop letting the guys drag them all down.

  • GlamGirlLee

Funny. Didn’t Nigel diss some same-sex dancers during the auditions? I didn’t watch them, so I am not sure…

Funny. Didn’t Nigel diss some same-sex dancers during the auditions? I didn’t watch them, so I am not sure’ ¦

The dude/dude ballroom couple he dissed was bad and they confused things by trying to switch up who was leading and following during the audition (or male/female roles if you will). Since the start of this show the final 4 have always had to dance in every combination so female/female and male/male. The Tranji duo has to be one of my favorite dances.

how sad, Nigel and all the choreographers were prepared to do an MJ tribute and submitted their list of music and Sony came back and said no, or the family, Nigel is not sure, can’t understand why – it can only help the MJ brand unless there is a legal complication…..
