Jeanine Mason is America’s Favorite Dancer! Congratulations Jeanine!VIDEO

Brandon Bryant is eliminated in 2nd place
Evan Kasprzak is eliminated in 3rd place - VIDEO
Kayla Radomski is eliminated in 4th placeVIDEO

OK, so my powers of prediction were way off as usual, but I’m cool with it.   Jeanine was one of my favorite dancers this season (loved Janette too) so I’m happy with tonight’s results.

It’s probably too much for the dancers to learn new routines for the finale on top of what they’re mastering for the competition.   I enjoyed watching   Randi and Evan (his best non solo dancing on the show)   “Butt Dance”, Janette and Brandon throw down a fast and furious disco, and Jeanine and Jason get hot and heavy during a Travis Wall contemporary, but a two-hour show full of 99% recycled material is a bit anti-climatic.   The Idol finale is way more entertaining.

See you next season–in just 4 weeks! Season 6 premiers on September 9.   Mark your calenders!

Who is America’s Favorite Dancer?   We’ll finally know in a couple of hours…

Live blog and VIDEOS after the JUMP…

Group Number: “A Brand New Day” from the Wiz – The Top 20 reprise the Top 14 group dance, by Tyce DiorioVIDEO

Sitting on the panel tonight: Lil C, Mia Michaels, Tyce Diorio, Debbie Allen, Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy (dripping in diamonds!), Nigel Lythgoe.   More choreographers are sitting in the audience.

First, a video retrospective of the entire season. Time filler.

Cat says we’ll see the judges favorite routines of the season, and “a couple of surprises”.

More video stuff: A recap of last night’s performances. More Time filler.

The judges pick their favorite routines:

Evan joins Jeanine and Brandon on stage.   The dancer in 3rd place is…Evan. His goodbye video plays. Evan says last night’s audience chanting his name was breathtaking.   He gets a little choked up talking about his journey.

  • Nigel Lythgoe: “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles (Addiction) Contemporary by Mia Michaels –   Kayla and Kupono. (Top 12). – VIDEO

(Mia is crying, standing o from the judges, the audience)

Time for the results! Nigel says both Jeanine and Brandon deserve to be there.   When he found out who the winner was this morning, he was delighted, he says.

Jeanine is America’s favorite dancer! She’s crying and a little incoherent…but happy!   Yay for Jeanine!   “Thank you academy!” she jokes.   She thanks her mom for making her take dance lessons.   The dancers carry Jeanine on their shoulders, the confetti flies and we’re out.

  • terps

The Tango was not as good as the first time

  • champ

    so excited!!! go jeanine!!

  • butte009

21.6 million votes came in last night.

Do I dare ask how many were from AR?

  • Victoria

    ^ :laugh_tb:

I couldn’t get very invested in SYTYCD this year, so I’m just enjoying the show. I don’t really have a favorite of the four.

  • s0x_prisoner

Ahh I love that Travis Wall piece. JEANINE FTW!

  • GeminiDolly

    Loved the tango.

  • rayni

Can I just say that sometimes I hate the camera work on this show? I want to see the dancers and the dance not wide shots of the damned stage. The camera work ruined that group dance for me. :furious_tb: :wallbash_tb:

  • BlankSlate

Do you know what worries me about Evan?
When he dances alone, I feel him, feel his smooth moves, feel his airy steps

But in group dances — just like the fiery Calle Ocho– he disappears. Where was he? Why do I not see him? Why do I not notice him? His body seems to fade. I look for him. I don’t see him in ways that I see the others == others that did not last as long as he did on the show.

    Is it just me?

  • dhunken

Kayla-even though I picked her to come in 4th. It was sad to see her told she was the first to be eliminated. She was classy in her departing words. She is right she is a winner as they all are.

  • cmheart

I can not handle Evan in those over-sized pajamas.

  • Sunshinegirl

LOVED seeing the Jason and Jeanine duet again! WOW! SMOKIN’ HOT! I think those two have a thing for each other. Jeanine mentioned last night that the kiss was not choreographed. Hmmm…

  • champ

“jeanine” is a trending topic on twitter!!!!

  • BlankSlate

    OH MY G-D

  • terps

America can’t get in wrong now

  • butte009

    Yes!!!!!! ~insert Mary Murphy scream here~!!!!!!! :clap_tb: :thumbup_tb: :clap_tb:

  • Nerinab

At the risk of sounding like a technophobe, can someone explain what “trending” is on Twitter? Thanks!

  • Mark

*gives self an indulgent pat on the back for calling the results thus far*

Now this is exciting. I really am not entirely sure who’ll take the win… though my intuition in Jeanine. We’ll see, though…

  • solnutela

Evan Kasprzak is eliminated in 3rd place

    YES!!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BRANDON!

  • silverwings

Shame about Evan. I fear for his brother next season. For all the stuff they picked on Evan for, I’m afraid his brother will get it worse. :(

Now rooting for Jeanine. I never liked Brandon.

  • Sherena

    Jeaniiiiiine

  • dhunken

Evan-Well my favorite did not come in 1st but very happy he was in the top 4. ( and he did have over 3 thousand people in that theater chanting his name last night. Not a bad consolation prize. ) I loved when he said “Heck yeah!” when Cat asked him if he was going to continue dancing. The Butt dance tonight I thought was better then the first time. Finale so far I think is very entertaining.

  • http://steve-o-meter.com steve-o-meter

Who the heck won? my dvr cut off before the results

  • Duke

What the heck! Isn’t that TJ from TJ and the LiL Mommas from AGT?!?!

  • http://steve-o-meter.com steve-o-meter

oh duh..it’s still on…my DVR is messed up…ignore me

Nope it’s not just you.. but that tells you what? The other dancers are way better than him. He’s good in his style or when he’s dancing solo but when they’re dancing together then you can see the real deal… Kayla’s much better dancer than Evan.. but what can I say.. it’s America’s favorite dancer… but I cannot complain now… I could care less who’s going to win this either Brandon or Jeanine… coz they’re both great… great dancers… finally I’m very happy.. :clap_tb: :clap_tb:

That addiction routine was definitely one of the best of the season.

  • GeminiDolly

Awww that was Great news, Tyce’s friend is cancer free today.

  • terps

Judges should stay behind the table

  • rayni

My 11 year old granddaughter just saw the cancer dance for the first time. After it was over she just said, “Wow. That just makes me speechless.” It was a beautiful, moving dance.

  • Nerinab

Judges should stay behind the table

    Amen to that.

  • butte009

    Congratulations Jeanine!!!!!!

  • floridaboy8703

Brandon never danced to Mia Michael choreography. Hmm.

  • GeminiDolly

    Congrats Jeanine

  • Mark

    Many congratulations to Jeanine!!!!

  • lamslova

    Congrats to you Jeanine!

  • Adamme

WOW.. So You Think You Can Dance definitely the best… love to see them all dancing again… it proves that they know what they’re talking about since they’re all dancers before they become choreographers.

SO for the judges …. and choreographers..

  • champ

    fuck yes!!!!!!!

  • soccerboi

Brandon was the best dancer but evidently Janine is America’s favorite dancer…I can live with that.

  • dhunken

Congrats to Jeanine and her fans. I feel bad for Brandon because I think he got short changed getting the spotlight to view his journey on the show.

I am happy for Jeanine and truly believe she deserved it just as much as anyone else, but pissed that Nigel got his way.

  • unique28v

Oh well. I wanted Brandon to win and thought he deserved it, but at least the show got their 2nd girl winner. congrats jeanine.

  • lilbrusc102

Yay!!! Congrats to Jeanine! Finally, the person I voted for wins a reality show for the first time since Fantasia on AI season3! Although I threw a few votes Brandon’s way as well, so I would have been able to say that either way, ha.

  • soccerboi

Im beginning to wonder whether I will ever pick a winner…I always pick the runner up, always. From the last 3 American Idols, the last 4 Bachlelor/Bachelorettes, and SYTYCD. IS it me or does the runner up always deserve it more…how can I keep getting it wrong. Seriously?!

  • Pam

I am very thrilled for Jeanine. I never imagined when the 20 top show first aired that she would be in the top 4 or even the last girl standing to eventually take it all. Of the top 4, she was probably the dancer that improved the most over the season. I don’t think she dreamed Cat would be calling her name and I didn’t either. I thought it was going to be Brandon but all 4 of them are great dancers in their individual styles.

  • idolbeat

Did anyone else notice Brandon was not on the stage at the end? Or was it just me not seeing him?

  • js

Aww. I love Jeanine, I love Cat, I love Adam, I love Brandon, I love all the dancers… I love SYTYCD. This show is awesome.

  • jammasta

Hah, I didn’t follow this show much, but I liked Jeanine because early on I liked Phillip. So I kinda pulled for her to win.

I picked both winners this year :D.

  • champ

from zero screen time to WINNER. WOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • St.Lucia

Hooray for Jeanine!!! I was pretty okay with it going to either Brandon or her, so I was going to be delighted either way, but her reaction made me smile.

So this is what its like to have someone I want win something?

After 7 seasons of American Idol that has YET to happen.

  • butte009

Well I’m happy even though Brandon didn’t win. Jeanine was excellent too. Now we get to start it all over again in 1 month.

But…. SYTYCD Canada starts in just 5 days! Whoahoo! I’m going to get all the contestants mixed up between the two shows. :laugh_tb:

  • idolislife

I’m so HAPPY right now. Congrats a million trillion times over to Jeanine for her amazing run that led up to this amazing win :)!!!! Also, it goes without saying that all of the dancers in the top four this year brought something different to the stage and were all great dancers in their own right.

But you know, if Adam couldn’t win Idol, I’m glad Jeanine won SYTYCD. Congrats again to her and ALL the dancers, and thanks for making it a wonderful season. Can’t wait for next month :)!!!!!!!!!

  • Dr. Tracey

Finally I get all my points in the pool!
That was a great finale, Kayla was my favorite but Jeanine is such a worthy winner.
    Can’t wait for next season.

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

I am very thrilled for Jeanine. I never imagined when the 20 top show first aired that she would be in the top 4 or even the last girl standing to eventually take it all. Of the top 4, she was probably the dancer that improved the most over the season.

THIS. When I first saw that she was paired with Phillip, I was like “who?” but then I thought – well maybe they like her and there’s something there, or they wouldn’t have paired her with such a popular guy. But even then, I still didn’t see her in the top 4, let alone winning. She just had a great arc, and yes, peaked at exactly the right time.

Janette was my favorite this season, and Jason was my favorite guy, but Jeanine stole a piece of my heart and loyalty somewhere along the way. I think it was her first solo when she and Phillip hit bottom 3 the first time. I think she was consistent, and really started to hit her stride starting with the contemporary with Jason.

And she has such a great personality. “I never thought I’d be giving an acceptance speech at the Kodak, so thank you Academy”??? FTW. Love it. She’s awesome.

  • Sunshinegirl

YES! Man, this has been an AWESOME year for my favorites!!! Shawn Johnson wins Dancing With The Stars! Kris Allen wins American Idol! And NOW Jeanine wins So You Think You Can Dance!!! WooHoo! Well deserved! I’ve never had this much luck in picking favorites, EVER! I’m so happy for her! She essentially pulled a Kris Allen by coming onto the live shows with no prior air time and working her way up out of oblivion into the spotlight…AMAZING! You go girl!

  • http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=iamthepurplewalrus&view=videos purplesmile

    Woohoo! Jeanine!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

Where is my Wade Robson routine???? :furious_tb:

Evan I luv you… you are a cute funny looking little man… and I love your dance…

Oh well congrats to the winner..

  • floridaboy8703

I don’t understand why people are so shocked by Jeanines win. Sabra did basically the same thing in the 3rd season. Matter of fact their ascent to the top is basically the same. Slow start but built up serious inertia as the show progressed.

  • haininh

I love Jeanine. In fact, I only watched her this season. Blame *Mad* and Phillip. The fact that she kissed other contestants so many times bothers me just a little bit but she’s a fabulous dancer. Plus, she’s so fun. Did I read it on here that she has a hubby?

  • MN Sue

    Fantastic show tonight!
I didn’t read the thread when the cancer dance was first performed so forgive me if this is old news. Tyce’s long time friend who is cancer free is Michelle Larkin of Larkin Dance Studio in Minnesota. She is hosting a dance workshop this weekend. Guess who is appearing and offering their teaching talents? ADE, JEANETTE, ALLISON HOLKER (Season 1), and TYCE, but we know him by his real name, Kevin. I have a good friend who will be attending.

  • BlankSlate

MN SUE: I’v never wanted to live in Minnesota before but this would be a good weekend to be a local there. Sounds like a wow of a workshop. How emotional will that event be? I can’t even imagine.

Kevin D’Orio? Oh. Wonder where “Tyce” came from.

I think tonight’s winner is not only Jeanine but Michelle Larkin. Long may she dance.

  • Grammie Kari

Oh, I am so happy Jeanine won!! YAY! :clap_tb:

I feel bad that I had her as the winner but changed my mind at the last minute. This is just wonderful news!

I just returned from a Temptations & Four Tops concert (excellent) and tonight I actually met Aretha Franklin (briefly). My only sadness is that I don’t have a copy of the concert to watch and cannot view YouTube.

IF ANYONE CAN MAKE ME A COPY OF TONIGHT’S SHOW, I WOULD BE MOST GRATEFUL!

  • http://www.fatladysings.us TFLS

Congrats to Jeanine on the win! I was initially rooting for Janette (boy was it nice seeing her dance again!), then Evan’ ¦..but I’m pleased as punch that Jeanine won the brass ring. I have to say I’m not a fan of that theatre, though. It often overwhelmed the performers. Still – ya gotta learn to adapt. It’s part of the business. I’ve been on tour before. You have to fit into all kinds of spaces. I remember one production of ‘A Little Night Music’ trying to squeeze into a too small Austin theatre. The set actually had to be cut to make it work. Actors just had to manage as best they could. You learn to modify on the fly, as it were. Not easy, either – but the more you do, the more you find you can do.

  • suebrody

I had Brandon or Jeanine as my pick, so I’m very happy for Jeanine (somehow, she was actually my Kris to Brandon’s Adam, as Brandon was in the spotlight from the beginning and Jeanine just sort of crept up; I think Philip held her down, tho I liked him).

I honestly thought Evan would win, based on audience reaction, but I think America got it right. Evan was adorable but not well-rounded enough, Kayla was a beautiful dancer who didn’t connect with enough viewers (like me), and Brandon and Jeanine were both worthy. The only thing that bothered me at the end was that they barely acknowledged Brandon when they crowned Jeanine the winner. I’m like, uh, guys, he came in 2nd! Remember when Twitch was 2nd and you gave him all sorts of love? Remember KRADAM?

Oh, well. All four should have successful careers (particularly Jeanine, Brandon, and Kayla, whom I could see working with Mia). I dunno about Evan, but I bet he’ll find his niche and do really well, too.

    Ready for S6 and Glee!

  • Renee in CA

I guess my half-hour voting for Jeanine paid off last night. I am so surprised that she won! Yay for her!

  • Grammie Kari

Didn’t they give a goodbye video to Brandon? I did think Evan would win.

Renee, I think my two hours of voting helped Jeanine! :wink_wp:

    This is such great news!

  • AZIdolFan

i knew Jeanine would win!!! I totally called the order, that’s a first for me.

Loved the whole show tonight but that addiction routine had me in tears just like the judges. still can’t believe cat wasn’t nominated for outstanding reality show host. you can tell she loves her job and the contestants.

i’m sooooo happy season 6 starts in September!!!!!

  • Dlynne

I’m happy with the results. Besides being a great dancer, Jeanine has an infectious personality. I love the dark horse coming from behind to win it all, too.

Watching the highlighted dances tonight, I realized just how many Brandon was in. By the time he did the disco at the end of the show, he looked like he was just going to pass out. Poor thing. It says a lot about his partnering, though – I think he was, by far, the best partner.

Also, I’m surprised they didn’t give him something, too. Last year they gave a prize to Katee. Wasn’t it $50,000 or something like that?

It was a good finale – it makes me want to see those dances again on tour, especially “Addiction.” What an incredibly raw performance. Just spectacular. My second favorite is “If It Kills Me” danced by Jeanine and Jason.

Overall, it was a very good night! Congrats Jeanine!

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/voronas-ontario-american-idol-tour-recap.htm/feed/ vorona

Also, I’m surprised they didn’t give him something, too. Last year they gave a prize to Katee. Wasn’t it $50,000 or something like that?

Yeah, I was waiting for that. Wonder why not this year? And wasn’t it new last year? Maybe it was a Just Because We Love Katee special prize.

Anyway, I’m fine with the results. Of those four, I wanted Evan and Kayla in the bottom two slots, and that happened.

PLUS! Tons of my favorite, Janette! She got as much air time as anyone, which made me very happy. And I got to see Kupono do the Addiction routine again. Love the routine, and I’d missed the guy. Didn’t like his makeup or the lighting this time. The lighting was odd all night. New venue for them, I guess.

  • http://mjsbigblog.com/voronas-ontario-american-idol-tour-recap.htm/feed/ vorona

Looks like someone is a Kayla fan…

AnoopDoggDesai: Also, Kayla is smookkiinnnn. Some one set a brotha up! @cgdancer612?? Haha

(cgdancer612 is Courtney Galiano from last season.)

  • marsvolta

Does anyone else have a problem with the sound for sytyc videos or is it just me (only the yahoo video ones)?

  • kateydid57

I’m so happy for Jeanine, my fav since the beginning. She won me over the first time I saw her dance: “Mad” with Philip. Kayla is technically perfect and has beautiful line, but she didn’t touch people’s hearts. Evan is a doll and perfect at the Broadway dancing, but not as versatile in other areas (though he did a great job and tried SO hard at everything). Brandon is also technically amazing and what an athlete in addition to being a gorgeous dancer. But something about Jeanine got to people. She has a real unique style, could dance any type of dance they threw at her, is both strong and graceful, and has so much personality; she’s the kind of girl you can’t help but like. She’s a “real” girl, who also happens to be a wonderful dancer! And I am amazed she’s only 18!! (Am amazed at how young so many of the dancers are; wow, the talent, work ethic, dedication of these teens/young adults is mind-blowing). A great season!! My first time watching this show; didn’t really know what it was about before (I don’t have TV). I want to thank MJ (and Rickey) for making it possible for me to be able to watch both American Idol and SYTYCD. You two are GREAT!!

  • haininh

@kateydid57: Haha, so I thought she’s older than that.

  • Reflections On Life

i took a tally of all the judges favorite dances performed tonight, including the group dances.

    here are the winners:

    style: contemporary – 4 dances

choreographer: louis van amstel, mia michaels – 3 dances each

    week: top 20 – 3 dances

dancers: jeanine, brandon – 3 dances each

    partners: janette & brandon – 2 dances

variety of partners: jeanine – 3 dances w/ 3 diff partners (philip, jason, brandon)

non-final-4 dancers: janette, jason – 2 dances each

    lowest-ranked dancer: max – 1 dance

    lowest-ranked partners: asuko & vitolio – 1 dance

my conclusions, based on judges favs:

the right dancers won the top 2 spots (jeanine & brandon)

the judges have a lot of love for louis van amstel

the judges & the public really love the contemporary style

had janette gotten the chance to do a (moving, crowd pleasing) contemporary piece, like jeanette, kayla, and melissa each had, then she might have reached the final 4.

i thought the season started out strong and then got weaker week by week. that’s born out by there being more favs in top 20 week (3) than in any other week. top 18 had 2 fav dances, so did top 16 but 1 was a group dance, and top 14′s only fav was a group dance. top 6 had no favs at all, and finale had only 1.

my surprises, based on judges favs:

kayla was the judges fav dancer but only in 2 of their fav dances

evan was only in 1 fav dance. given his top 4 standing, that’s odd. i thought he & randi had several good dances, esp their top 20 contemporary dance.

melissa & ade were my fav couple but only in 1 fav dance. i thought many of their performances were quite memorable, esp their top 20 contemporary and their sizzling-hot rhumba!

looks like janette & jason, 2 fav dances each, should have placed 5 & 6 instead of melissa & ade, in 1 fav dance each (the same one – cancer).

why wasn’t wade robson amongst the judges? why wasn’t any of his routines amongst the judges favs? something fishy going on there…

  • wewantmuse

Looking back at Season 5.. here’s my open letter to Nigel and Simon Fuller:

NO PERVY COMMENTS. It’s completely off-putting, it takes attention away from the dancers, and it’s really just painfully awkward to watch.

LESS BROADWAY/WALTZ It seemed like every other routine was broadway or some variation of a waltz. Broadway almost always seems to be just okay or a complete let-down. Perhaps pulling in different broadway choreographers might change this, but with Tyce constantly giving us these average numbers, it’s become tiring. The only two broadways I remember were Kayla/Brandon’s Top 4 and Evan/Randi’s. Onto waltz.. I understand they are sometimes very beautiful and reminiscent of a fairy-tale, but a majority of the time, they are often boring. It seems like we saw way too much of the waltz/quickstep side of ballroom and not nearly enough of latin ballroom.

On that note.. DIFFERENT DANCES This season seemed to be pigeon-holed to contemporary, jazz, broadway, ballroom, and some very weak hip-hop. I do realize SYTYCD occasionally steps out and grabs some other stuff (Russian, Bollywood, etc.), but I want to see more of that. I can’t think of what exactly, but African dance and bellydancing would be a fun start.

On that note.. LESS TYCE This guy really irks me as a judge. He’s just terrible in my opinion. I don’t feel he offers anything exciting or really useful whenever he’s a judge (besides his ridiculous snaps).

And on that note.. MORE SONYA It is SO apparent that Sonya is easily one of the dancers’ favorite choreographers and America’s favorite choreographers. While I’ll admit she did get a fair amount of weeks to choreograph (even though I’d love to see her on every week), I was extremely dissapointed I didn’t see her judging outside of the auditions. When she judged the auditions, I found her passion and love for dance to be completely enthralling. It made me want to love dance as much as she did and to care about the dancers as much as she did. I wish in season 6 we will actually see Sonya judge a week or two (or three, or four, etc.).

REST OF MY JUDGES RANT No more Lil’ C/”STREET” Toni Basil judging. They kill the panel for me. Please try and get Wade to judge one week.

MARY I love Mary. I understand she annoys a lot of people, and she started annoying me. When she first started screaming/hot tamale train, it was only for the absolute best. This season, especially, it seems that anything halfway decent is getting her screaming. It took away from the novelty and specialness of the scream and just made it annoying. Go back to making the scream/train more of a treasure.

THIS IS ABOUT THE DANCERS Idol has recently turned a lot of viewers off with its increasingly stupid focus on the judges. These talent shows should be 90% about the talent themselves. Like, Idol, I find SYTYCD’s focus slowly shifting away from the dancers and more towards the choreographers. While the choreographer should always be recognized for his/her work, it should never be the main focal point.

GIVE US MORE BACKGROUND ON TOP 20 DANCERS I went into the Top 20 performance show knowing only about a select number of dancers. I don’t understand why so much time was spent on dancers who didn’t make it even to the top 32, and yet I didn’t know hardly anything about atleast 1/2 of the top 20.

BRING BACK HIP-HOP I really like NappyTabs, but I’m quickly becoming tired of their lyrical and very literal hip-hop. I feel like we’ve been missing the good ‘ol, dirty, in-your-face hip-hop for a while now.

MORE DIVERSITY IN DANCERS Way too many contemporary dancers. We had one locker this season? Come on…

That’s about all I can think of for now.. I’m happy for Jeanine (although I’ll admit, I was a HUGE Kayla fan). I was one of those apparently few who enjoyed not only her almost impeccable dancing, but also her personality (nothing wrong with a shy, sheltered girl). My ideal order would’ve gone: 1) Kayla, 2) Brandon, 3) Jeanine, and 4) Evan, but regardless, I really enjoyed Jeanine this season.

Oh my that was so emotional. I wept at the addiction routine, again.

I honestly never thought Jeanine would win, I had scored for Brandon, even though I was routing for Evan.

I think it was a fair result, so heartiest congrats to Jeanine.

To Evan, Brandon, Kayla and the rest of the top 20, very well done to all.

It was a nice finale, a good mix of tears and smiles. I really enjoyed it.

If I had one note to make, it would be that the Kodak set was terribly distracting. The neon arches and the digital screen took away from the emotional impact of the routines. I also think the Director was a bit sloppy in his choice of dance shots. Movements that should have been shot wide were in close up and vice versa. A small nitpick, but I had to say it.

This was my first season of SYTYCD, and I’m glad I watched.

I don’t understand why people are so shocked by Jeanines win. Sabra did basically the same thing in the 3rd season. Matter of fact their ascent to the top is basically the same. Slow start but built up serious inertia as the show progressed.

I don’t think that word means what you think it means :)

    Momentum?

  • mitchellvii

IMHO, Jeanine won the competition with her solo. Those pirouhettes that slowly desolved at the end without even the slightest loss of balance were magical. She took a BIG risk and nailed it. America loves stuff like that.

On the other hand, Brandon’s solo was frantic and more athletic than artistic. I think he lost some viewers with that.

Anyway, the only person who really looked dejected that he hadn’t won was Evan. He looked like he ate a bug. I hate to say it, but if Evan was better looking (yeah, shallow, i know), I think he would have won.

  • Allison

I’m very happy that Jeannine won! Janette should have been in the final 4, though.

  • poporange

I started to really watch SYTYCD last year this year was my second. The funny thing is allot of the top 20 kept mixing up who was Janette and Jeanene. My favorite for the girls was Janette then Jeanene for the guys Evan. IDK I thought the two girls were even except Janettet had some extra spark . Congrads to Jeanene .

mnsue-that studio is it in St.Paul or minneapolis? It sounds famililar .You going to the syycd concert I just with it was at the excell not Target center.(heard was not as good)

  • bmms

Agree 100% with you, MJ! That is about American Idol’s finale… AI has no competition whatsoever.

So, yesterday I posted that I voted 2 hours straight for Brandon but last night I did not feel cheated nor as if my vote did not count (unlike another famous reality show that I will not name).

I was happy for Jeanine. My son and I clearly wanted Brandon to take the top prize but we were so excited for her. I even became a bit emotional. Jeanine rightly deserved the crown. I loved her reaction and her funny comment… “I want to thank the Academy”… Thanking her Mom, loving everything about the competition, especially the other contestants. Congratulations Jeanine!

Brandon looked happy despite his second place finish. Brandon, you are a beautiful, strong, funky and gracious dancer.

    I was sad for Evan…

I was not surprised about Kayla’s 4th place. Although she is a very good dancer, but she was never a favorite of mine and I always received a negative vibe about her.

It was a grand evening. I truly enjoyed watching the choreagraphers and judges in choosing their favorite dance. What a treat to see the performances once again and all of the judges faves were mine as well. But, my all time favorite dance, Jeanette and Brandon performing their Tango routine. Bravo!

Mary Murphy: Wow! Although I thought her earrings were a bit much, but the necklace was gorgeous. Mary always dresses with style. She’s my favorite judge and I will miss her… OOOOOOOHHHHOOOOOOOOOO!

Kudos and much love to all the dancers and my very best wishes for continued success in their dancing careers. Thanks for a great season! :clap_tb:

  • http://huckleberryfriend.wordpress.com/ huckleberryfriend

The huge stage swallowed them all up. About 1 hour was all I could take.

  • Applesauce

for the past two years on idol (the only time i have watched idol) my favorite of the top two won (David Cook and Kris). and two years in a row my favorite on SYTYCD lost (twitch and brandon or kayla) sorry but Jeanine should not have won.

  • t2

Thank you MJ for posting the results. I can no longer listen to the judge’s ridiculously biased comments and have learned to fast forward through them on performance night. However, since last night was all about the judges and their opinions I couldn’t manage to reach the “extreme fast forwarding” needed to pass over them.

Only one favorite dance by Evan — hey jidges!! your bias is showing.

Jeanine wins — yeah sure, why not. Another contemporary dancer…Zzzzz…

  • mjrocks

    Okay….2 things….

The camera work this season sucked. There were lots of times that the camera was tilted to make the guy look even shorter – especially Evan, and I don’t even think he belonged in the top 4. Other times, it was moving so fast that I couldn’t see the dance. Keep the dang camera still so I can see what they’re doing!!!

The other thing…….why does everyone think it’s ok for Mary to fan herself over a dancer, but Nigel can’t? Age? What? People are supposed to stop thinking sexual thoughts after they leave their 20′s or 30′s? Get real people. I don’t find anything pervy at all about Nigel and he has just as much right to enjoy the dancers on that level as anyone else on there. I’m sick of the ageism. Nigel is a wonderful judge and a cool human being and he’s helped make it possible for a lot of great dance to get a wider audience. Face it, these dancers are wearing almost nothing, doing very suggestive moves at time. If that doesn’t get to you sometimes, you’re dead. Can you say all you see is the dance and not the hot body doing it?

  • mjrocks

Oh, yea, and the lighting. There was so much spastic lighting, it really distracted from the dancers this year. Maybe here’s where my age is showing, but I get really distracted by all the strobe they did this year.

  • wand3rful

was I the only one a tad bit uncomfortable when the camera lingered on Christina Applegate after the Cancer Dance? i thought it was a special moment for her and it felt a bit intrusive (imo). ….and yeah, i started to tear :(

on a lighter note….WHOOOPIE! congrats Jeanine! beautiful dancer w. a great personality, worthy winner.

im excited for season 6…..my only issue, PLEASE stop dressing girls the same way in the NabTap routines. baby doll tops, jeans, high top sneakers. Jeanine during “Mad” looked the same as Chelsea in “Bleeding Love”…hip-hop is a feeling/movement, you don’t have to dress so literal….hat on the side, high top sneaks. unless you dress like that everyday, and its your own style, it looks silly on some of these dancers. like they are trying too hard.

  • sallyas1

I like how SYTYCD does their finale. Yep, 2 hours is long, but I like seeing some of the best dances return. (though I would have preferred to see the thief dance to the tango).

But SYTYCD finale pales in comparison to this year’s American Idol finale, which was pretty freaking fantastic even though my fav Adam didn’t win.

I’m rather blah about the next season. I thought while there were a few memorable dances this year (addiction, breast cancer), for the most part they were slim pickings. Not nearly as good as past years. I think the dancers were great, but I think the work they were given was, for the most part, flat and unspired. I blame the choreographers for that. I think the dancers could have handled more.

  • sallyas1

My open letter to the powers. (I like doing these things).

WATCH THE COMMENTS: While I think some of Nigel’s comments aren’t meant to be pervy, they come across that way to the public. He’s been at this long enough now to know how to get his point across without going there. Also be aware of playing favorites. Idol is notorious for it, but this is the first season where it was painfully obvious from SYTYCD.

LESS CONTEMPORARY / JAZZ: Which look the same to the untrained eye. I love this style, don’t get me wrong, but there were weeks of episodes where I think the entire 2 hours was all contemporary or jazz with maybe a waltz thrown in.

DANCE STYLES: Make sure EVERYONE gets a turn at a dance style.

NEW CHOREOGRAPHERS. This year, with a few exceptions, was flat. Maybe new blood would fix that? Yes more Sonja. She was the most exciting choreographer this season. More Louis too. And include them in the rotating judge pool. (though not judging the week they choreographed) Also more Travis and the girl from SYTYCD Australia (I forget her name). Maybe last season’s Mark? He has such a quirky style of dance, I would love to see how someone else would do it.

DANCE STYLE SELECTION: Where’s the hat? Bring back the hat so we can see the dancers pick their styles as well as partners. Without the hat it looked like some dances were deliberately given to dancers as opposed to just luck of the draw.

MORE LATIN BALLROOM: Latin ballroom dancing = SEXY.

MIX UP THE HIP HOP: At one time I thought SYTYCD was too hard with their hip hop – it was all the hard hitting stuff. But everything this year looked soft. Include both. \\

MORE GLOBAL DANCES: The Russian dance was a major mistake this year (or maybe it was the costumes), but the year before with the final 2 guys was quite good and Bollywood was good this year as well.

    JUDGES:
Lil C – Yeah we get it, he knows a lot of words. I’m just not sure we really need to hear all of them. Though I do like how the other judges make fun of him.

Mary Murphy – the woman knows her stuff, but the voice. Yipes! Please tune it down just a tad. Something isn’t right when she wakes up my dog with that hot tamale shriek. And she was way to liberal with the hot tamale train this year. It loses its “specialness” when it is awarded weekly.

When picking judges favorite dances for the finale, be a little more “generous”. I called Jeanine for the win a half hour before the show ended because she was featured in so many of the judges favorites. Loses the surprise.

KEEP IT ABOUT THE DANCERS – So far SYTYCD does an excellent job with keeping it with the dancers. Yes there is some play time with the judges, but not nearly to the extent of Idol (and I think some of that may be to eat up tv time). But dear God if they bring on Paula as a guest judge, make sure she’s aware of that.

GIVE US MORE BACKGROUND ON TOP 20 DANCERS – I agree with this one. I think there are many people who skip over the painful audition process and don’t start watching until the top 20. Would be nice for us to get a bit of background.

INCIDENTALS: Maybe some insight into how some of the other incidentals are chosen. Makeup, hair, costumes. Do the dancers pick those, do they have a say, or is it all SYTYCD powers. If the dancers are involved in the decision process, include some video of that.

MORE DIVERSITY IN DANCERS – Here here! Wayyy to many contemporary dancers this season, though I think SYTYCD made a small step in the right direction with Samba Janette, Ballet Melissa and Broadway Evan making it as far as they did. But SYTYCD still has more to go.

  • flaminghead

    Thank goodness it was Jeanine!!
I loved her from the beginning, one of my top four anyway.. I am so thrilled for her, the same way i was thrilled for Josh last year… Really good people. Really good. She is outstanding as a dancer, as a woman, and as a human. I like her alot.
Hooray for this season too, some of the BEST ever… Best. I feel almost priviledged in a way to share in the emotion that all of these dancers put on display and to be able to see such absolute beauty as this show gives me. and bTW i really enjoyed all the favs tonight, as well as the performance of that Austrailian winner of SYTYCD. Yessi.
I can’t even wait for next season already.

  • lilbrusc102

haha, I just noticed I won the pool…yay me! :) I usually don’t do well in those!

Anyway, i hope they have better hip-hop dancers, and at least one bboy/bgirl next season. And can someone please get a krump routine? I love Lil C as a judge, but I also like seeing him try to explain to these kids (esp the trained/contemporary dancers) what krump and “getting bucc” are all about…it’s entertaining :)

  • hcpoirot

    Congrats for Jeanine!!!

A few suggestion for season 6:

    1. For the finale result, maybe adding some new routines will be good instead just repeating all old routines. And maybe one or two songs. Really bizarre that in usual results, there will be at least one song from top singer. but none in the finale result?

Dancing with the Stars and American Best Dance Crew result finale had few new routines to make the results not boring.

    2. Please please bring new choreographers for Ballroom and Latin . This season practically Louis Van Amstel rocks. Maybe Julianne, Mark Ballas and Derek can choreographs few routines. They are very good at cha cha, paso doble, jive, tango and quick step routines. Bring new blood in.

Please try and get Wade to judge one week

Yes please… he is hot… and so prety… I wont even care who is dancing… can he dance every week too please… yes I have a major crush on him :)

  • hcpoirot

So far (as far as I know) the non winner of this show had more success than the winner. Please add in if you knew how others do after appear in SYTYCD show:

    Season 1:
Blake now become judge in SYTYCD Canada.

    season 2:
Travis, Benji choreo for SYTYCD routines. Benji appear in video clip and dancer in DWTS result.

Dmitri also choreo for SYTYCD and had Emmy nomination. He also appeared in DWTS as pro dancer.

    Season 3:
Lacey also appeared in DWTS as pro dancer for 2 season now.

Pasha and Anya choreo for SYTYCD routine and appear for DWTS result.

Dominic, Hawk and Ryan (season 1) form a hip hop group with friends and win American Best Dance Crew season 3.

Jesus appear as pro dancer in Dance Your Ass Off season 1.

    Season 4:
Chelsea appear as DWTS pro dancer.

    Kherington star in Fame movie.

  • 1994yahoo

does anyone know the name of the song thats played in the background in the clip of jeanine and brandon’s journey in the ”
Jeanine Mason is America’s Favorite Dancer! Congratulations Jeanine!” clip?

  • Grammie Kari

Thank you hcpoirot , for a great summary!

I foresee both Jeanine and Kayla finding success after SYTYCD. Kayla also can sing and act, so I think she’ll head for Broadway.

I am curious about the new show Glee, as I see an opportunity to feature some of the best SYTYCD dancers. Whether it would be as part of the script character or as themselves.

Thank you, MJ for encouraging and overseeing this terrific forum! Great job – and I’ll be back for season 6!!
