So You Think You Can Dance Headed Back to Summer Season

Season 7 of So You Think You Can Dance is set to premiere the night after the American Idol finale, Thursday May 27 at 8 pm.

HOORAY. So You Think You Can Dance is back in the summer season, where it belongs.

As an experiment last year, FOX ran a season of SYTYCD in the fall, beginning shortly after Season 5 ended this past August.

The ratings took a dip, not helped by the need to chop up the season haphazardly in order to fit it in around major league baseball playoffs. The transgressions included: No Top 20 or 18 results shows due to playoffs meant no viewer voting until the Top 16, one of the results shows had to be pre-recorded because of the screwy schedule, a shorter season resulting in a crowded Top 6 finale, the season 6 kids getting screwed out of a tour.

Oh, it sucked big time. In interviews, producer Nigel Lythgoe stressed that the show would either come back in the summer or fall this year, but not both, so consider the fall season of SYTYCD a failed experiment. Besides, FOX is going to need to clear the decks for Simon Cowell’s X Factor beginning in Fall 2011.

So You Think You Can Dance is my favorite warm weather diversion. I’m looking forward to diving in after the American Idol hoopla ends in May.

SYTYCD auditions are underway, and have already landed in a couple of cities, including New York, where choreographer, Mia Michaels returned as a guest judge. After the jump, check out the schedule of the rest of the Season 7 audition cities.
