In this video report from LA FOX 11 news, Nigel Lythgoe goes into more detail about the Michael Jackson special–now canceled after Sony wouldn’t clear the list of songs Nigel submitted. The answer came Wednesday with the explanation, “Sorry we aren’t going to clear anything of these type of shows.”

“I’m now sure what ‘these types of shows’ are,” said Nigel, clearly perturbed, “As far as I’m concerned, Michael, in putting his music out to a public forum, gives his music to the people and his fans and now they’re saying ‘no you can’t use it for a dance show.’ It’s very upsetting.”

Also, Tyce DiOrio waxes poetic about the talent and charm of Katie Holmes, who will be performing a tribute to Judy Garland on the 100th SYTYCD on July 23. He said he’s been working with her for about a year.

They cleared them for AI – why not for SYTYCD… I’m befuddled.

  • lavender1960

I guess bombarding Sony at this point wouldn’t help?

They clear MJ songs for Idol? I have to wonder if someone wants more control of any further tribute shows or a bigger cut than just standard royalties.

  • unique28v

Wow… Thats rude of Sony. I would have cleared it for SYTYCD waaaaaay before the BET Awards, which I think for the most part made a mockery of MJ’s style of dance/music. I also would have cleared it for SYTYCD before they did for Randy Jackson’s MTV dance show and American Idol. Maybe they changed their standards now that MJ has died. It still would have been a fitting tribute in my opinion.

  • Squirrely

I agree the BET Awards tribute was not worthy.

  • lavender1960

Well I sent an email to Sony ATV though I am sure it won’t matter. Because it’s just their general email – you can never track down executives these days.

  • lavender1960

Maybe the BET show is why Sony changed their policy?

  • Dr. Tracey

I didn’t see the BET show so can’t comment on that but i’m sure they have some legit reason for saying no.
In any event it sucks, SYTYCD is a classy show and I have no doubt they would have put together a really classy and well put together tribute.

  • wand3rful

sadly, SYTYCD is one of the few classy reality tv shows/games…..if anyone deserve to have MJ’s music in their hands to work with, its this show. i do hope there is some Sony backlash

    Agreed.

Maybe it’s the family saying no…

  • lizland

I wonder if they are planning to milk this themselves, with specials, DVDs, concerts, etc. And they want to control the “tributes” to focus on ones that pay better.

Or maybe the songs are hung up in litigation or disputes already in his will/family/etc.

  • SpenserJ

Or maybe the songs are hung up in litigation or disputes already in his will/family/etc.

I doubt it. Any dispute would be on the back end so to speak. They can license the songs and pay Michael’s share into the trust. Any fight with regard to heirs would be about the trust, not the money being paid to it.

I doubt anyone involved will want to stop the trust from earning income in general. So, I would guess that someone involved just wants a really tight reign over where these songs are played.

I think they’re dumb for saying no either way. A few good dance pieces could really move some digital singles. Michael loved dancers. If they had planned to do this while he was alive like AI did – he probably would have said yes.

I’ll just go ahead and blame Joe. That always works for me LOL.

The family doesn’t have control to MJ’s estate or anything related to him except his children. They wouldn’t have the power to say no.

  • kansasfemale

??? “these types of shows” — if that means “tribute” shows, I can kinda understand a family involvement. The attorneys would have probably asked the family and the family could have said no, (they would feel out of control of things), and the attorneys would have come back and told Nigel “no”.

What worries me more is if “these types of shows” means prime time talent shows…then it will completely upset the list of songs future Idol contestants get to pick from. Although I think that MJ has embraced the discovery of new talent, now that he is gone……and it is strictly a business decision made by people without MJ’s passion….I could easily see them pulling the plug on allowing “these types of shows” (reality) from using his music.

If so……………..maybe AI/19 could sweet talk Prince.

  • SpenserJ

They wouldn’t have the power to say no.

The 2 guys running the trust do have the ultimate ability to say yes or no on behalf of Michael’s estate. But it’s entirely possible that they’re deferring some decisions to Michael’s family to keep the peace.

The reasoning here is selfish. Nothing new of course, but disheartening and shortsighted nonetheless. This show creates beautiful things on a regular basis and would do nothing but enhance Jackson’s legacy. The publisher’s, out of a misguided effort to be selective with their copyright, denied the world something great. This is when copyright law becomes a hindrance to creativity instead of an incentive.

Indeed, Michael did love dancers! So, maybe Chelsie can get a Michael Jackson number for one of her dance numbers on “Dancing With the Stars”?

Yes, Sony is dumb about this. Maybe they could ask Jermaine Jackson to come on the show to sing one of Michael’s numbers AFTER using Michael’s songs the day before (for the competittion)?

  • lavender1960

Even more complexing because Wade Robson has apparently been a friend of MJ’s since he was a small boy. Of course with Michael, many of his friendships were fleeting.

Great thinking Grammie Kari, people are saying Jermaine should release Smile as a single, hint hint.

  • Grammie Kari

lavender1960, I agree Smile was the best song of the tribute. Yes, I do believe Jermaine could have a hit record with it. I recorded it from the show; it is just beautiful!

Since Chelsie was chosen to be one of Michael’s dancers for his tour, she is the only one that could possibly get permission to dance to a Michael Jackson song. Right?
