So You Think You Can Dance aired the Boston auditions last night. It was pretty cool seeing some of my hometown peeps performing for the judges. Speaking of which, Tyce Diorio was the guest judge in Beantown.

There were quite a few dancers highlighted that went on to Vegas, which may be an indication that the talent here, overall, was good.

Videos after the JUMP…

Teddy Tedholm – 18 – Rockaway, NJ – Dude in wacky golf pants thrilled the judges. He’s quirky and talented, but I’m not convinced he’s more than a one trick pony. It’s straight to Vegas for Teddy. – VIDEO

Jean Lloret – 22 – Brockton, MA – John’s outrageous B-Boy moves had the judges freaking out. Literally. They were so impressed they sent him straight to Vegas. – VIDEO

Kimara Wood – 18 Lorton, VA – We caught just a glimspe of this Vegas-bound dancer. – VIDEO

Channing Cooke – 18 – Haverhill, MA – The judges wanted to see Channing in the choreography round first, but she eventually made it to Vegas. Lots of backstory about her part-time job working in a Northshore Ice cream shop. We call milkshakes frappes here. Isn’t that weird? – VIDEO

Russell Ferguson – 19 – Roxbury, MA – A talented krumper who makes it to Vegas after choreography. I’m with Nigel on this one–it’s pretty boring to watch as solo dancing. After, Tyce is so happy he farts. Lulz. – VIDEO

Karen and Matthew Hauer – 27 – Fort Lee, NJ – This hot, married couple impressed the judges with their ballroom dancing and got tickets straight to Vegas. – VIDEO

Gene Bersten – 21 – Minnetonka, MN – Nigel called Gene out on the super-annoying faces he pulls. He makes it to Vegas after choreography. – VIDEO

Kevin “K ‘Bez” Hunte – 23 – Brooklyn, NY – Tyce has an annoying hissy fit on Kevin after his b-boy routine failed to incorporate the contemporary dance training he’d been taking. Whatevah. – VIDEO

I did not get the love for the golf pants guy!?

My favorite was the krumper. I thought he did really well in choreography. It makes me curious to know if any of the winners have been sent to choreo before going to Vegas? If he has really been (well)trained in all the styles he listed, he should go far.

ITA, mgk. I thought it was one of those jokey clips. I LURRRVED the krumper! I don’t know if any of the Top 10 of any season ever went to choreo. Maybe Dom? I am pretty sure the winners (Nick, Benjy, Travis, Sabra, Joshua, and Jeanine, and no, I did not look them up ;)) didn’t. They went straight through to Vegas.

I was not impressed w/ last night’s show, and neither was the reviewer at ew.com. And many tweeters agreed w/ me. I am ready for Vegas Week already!

  • SparklesATL

ITA with both of you Sue and mgk. When that guy first started dancing I thought they would chew him up and spit him out. I couldn’t watch him I was so embarrassed for him.

I’m still wondering where the genus in that is.

I like you guys and Imma gonna let you finish, but Teddy Golfpants had the greatest solo of all time. Of ALL TIME. Okay, not really. Seriously, though, I was sorta digging what he brought to the table and earmarked him as one to watch. His solo was creatively choreographed and he brought a very unique and honest energy wherein you can imagine what a distinctive Teddy-style solo would be like. He also seems to have some nice musicality. Reminded me of Mark’s Bo Rhap solo a bit in the WTF of it, but the actual quality of his movement was more Ray Bolger than Mark. Anyway, I hope he’s got some surprising versatility and technical skills stored away there because I’d like to see him do well. The show has done a disservice in the past pegging the quirky dancers as one trick ponies or gimmicky. Mark did a lot to change that misconception. Maybe Teddy will add to it. Dunno. Maybe, maybe not.

ANYwayy, I liked last night’s show better than most of you because there was a lot of…this is gonna suck, no, no wait a sec, he/she’s actually pretty damn good….trickery going on. That was amusing. Tall tapper…who knew he could actually tap? The krumper was also pretty buck, y’all. The one dude, Kevin, the one that got Tyce’s panties in a bunch, looked so much like Gene Anthony Ray in the first close up that I had flashbacks and I really wanted him to be better than he was in his solo. That was a disappointment. Well that, and Tyce in general.

I’m pretty sure there are a scattered few top 10ers who have gone to choreo…typically the ones who are cast as fodder and end up exceeding expectations…off the top of my head Mark Kanemura, Neil Haskell too, I think….and Kupono last season, I think they called him too femme initially…maybe Evan when he originally auditioned?

    @sunchick: ROFLMAO!!

  • Danielle

I liked last nights show, but I can’t wait until the Top 20 starts – the auditions are taking forever! Anyway, I just have to say that Tyce is extremely annoying. He’s my least favorite judge.

  • Dr. Tracey

I thought the show last night was one of the better audition shows i’ve seen but then maybe it’s cuz it was Boston, I dunno, it seemed to have a lot of talented and interesting people.
I was ready to write Mr. Fancypants off just based on his stupid outfit but I liked him, he reminded me of Travis a little.
I thought the married couple were great and I loved Jean and Russell but I couldn’t stand the ice cream scooper, she annoyed the crap out of me for just the few minutes I saw of her.

  • suebrody

Noooo…never, ever use Mr. Fancypats and TRAVIS in the same sentence. It’s a TRAV(I)ESTY! ;)

I only liked the ice cream scooper b/c she comes from my hometown. :)

    MARK RULES.

    Favorites (in order of favorititude):
    Travis
    Mark
    Pasha
    Danny

I also liked Nick, Blake, Neil, Gev, Ivan, Jason, Kupono…well, a lot of them, but those listed above are the ones that ROCKED MY LITTLE WORLD

    1. The reason’s Teddy’s was so good was his body control. It’s incredible. Just like Nigel said, it was the subtle things. His audition was extremely quirky, reminded me of Mark from Season 4, and he could go from fast, explosive motions to really small ones so quickly. Watch it again, it’s one of the better ones I’ve seen.

    2. Really that much love over the Krumper? He was good, yeah, but honestly the best thing he did was his popping, and we’ve definitely seen better poppers (Phillip, Twitch). Besides that, nothing special. Still a good audition, though.

    3. Plenty of top 10 people did choreography.. Twitch, Gev, Kupono, just to name the ones I can think of off the top of my head…

  • Grammie Kari

I guess I am the only one that popped back and forth between DWTS and SYTYCD. I caught the Krumper and was not that impressed. I think he said he could Krump and Tap?

So, that couple was the FIRST married couple to make it to Las Vegas. I thought there were others. They were really good.

Tyce was crazy last night. Mary was laughing and screaming too much. I missed everything else.

  • weelassie

    yeah,
thanks for posting these mj. I missed it and was hoping you would have the clips. Good show except for Tyce. He doesn’t amuse me!

  • DennyS

Meh. That’s what the auditions are becoming. I thought the first week was totally great (the tappers 3 of them, paula van oppen and alexie !) and the 2nd week was fine. This week was so … Meh! And btw Benji and Joshua both went to choreography and then went on to win the show ? Don’t know about Sabra or Jeanine. Nick went straight through

  • sunchick

I think you’re right about Benji. I think I remember a big drama deal being made about him through all the Vegas stuff, like will he or won’t he make it through, Benji tears, growth arc set up, etc etc.

  • stellamarris

Can i pls post the choreography clips? i am totally totaly digging the Krumper and remember him giving a great show in the choreography section and cant wait to see him again! he looks like the only guy there with a real chance of making it to the top 20. oh, and like many here, i thought that the guy is the golf pants was far from being impressive.
