Smash Musical Bombshell Set For Charity Performance

Was the NBC ill-fated musical drama, Smash, your guilty pleasure? If so, be happy! Next year, Smash executive producers are planning to bring Bombshell, the show-within-a-show about  the life of Marilyn Monroe, to Broadway for one night only. Here are the details from Playbill

The Actors Fund has confirmed that Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will produce a one-night-only benefit of Bombshell, the fictional Broadway musical from the short-lived NBC musical series “Smash,” June 15, 2015, in New York City.

Bombshell, which musicalizes the life story of Marilyn Monroe, features a score by Tony Award-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Standouts from the score include “Let Me Be Your Star” and “Hang the Moon.”

It is expected that the one-night-only concert, which will include all 22 songs from Bombshell, will be staged at a Broadway theatre, with cast members from “Smash,” including Megan Hilty, reprising their performances. The staging will also feature choreography from the series by Emmy Award-winning “Smash” choreographer Joshua Bergasse.

American Idol alum, Katharine McPhee, played small-town girl, Karen Cartwright in the series, which ran from 2012-2013 for 32 episodes. Although her character was the initial star of Bombshell, until she left to take a part in another show, I can’t imagine she’d have time to take part in this production. Katharine is currently starring in the hit CBS drama, Scorpion.

Speaking of that other show, Hit List, got the one night treatment last December with Jeremy Jordan and Andy Mientus set to reprise their roles.

Along with Jordan and Mientus, Smash featured a slew of Broadway stars, including Christian Borle, Will Chase, Ann Harada, , Brian d’Arcy JamesKrysta Rodriguez and more.

Smash had all the ingredients to be a great show, including an intriguing concept and great talent. Unfortunately series creator, playwright Theresa Rebeck, presided over a trainwreck. Maybe a different team will someday be able to bring the world of Broadway to television.

Until then, we have a one night only performance of Bombshell, which should be great fun.
